crazy thing about history and the most influential scientists, artists,… we know today is that many of them weren’t approved of or liked at their time. Many were seen as freaks or stupid, living their whole life in that idea. Only afterwards their theory/ artwork or whatever was approved or appreciated.
I think this just shows how the society sometimes isn’t gonna appreciate things but it doesn’t mean it’s not good or right… They were truly ahead of their time and people weren’t ready to listen.

Sub-Saharan Africa 114 years ago today: Maji Maji Rebellion (19 Sep 1905) https://buff.ly/31yTQvx In 1905 revolt broke out in German East Africa as numerous tribes rejected forced labor on German cotton plantations, united by the belief that holy water (maji) would protect them from German bullets. Despite their faith, and their success in capturing a number of towns, the so-called Maji Maji were completely outmatched by European technology and brutally suppressed by the Germans. #subsaharanafrica #history #map #1900s #20thcentury #modernhistory #1905 #africa #africanhistory #germanempire #germaneastafrica #colonialism #imperialism #september #september19 #tanzania #tanganyika #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #majimaji #swahili #thisdayinhistory #eastafrica (at Mahenge, Iringa, Tanzania) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2lm6ivAPVh/?igshid=eo9hkblkbtjo

Illustrations of two types of “sirrushim”, strange vertebrate-analogue animals descended from sharks. One is an insect-eater, while the other feeds on fruit and small animals. They resemble ancient dragon designs of the Babylonians - also known as mushussu. These are not real animals, but exercises in speculative evolution.

Reconnaissance by Andres Villar, at the St Thomas Elgin Public Art Centre. A beautifully visual and elegant installation - sentimental, critical and insightful. 6th January 1661, following the restoration of the monarchy with Charles II, after the turbulent years of the English Civil War, which culminated in the execution of Charles I; the country despite the restoration is still in uncertain times. The end of 1660, had seen the hanging, drawing and quartering of the signers of the death warrant of Charles I in 1649, including the Lord Protector under the English Commonwealth Oliver Cromwell, who was dug up for the execution having died two years previously. All bodies were then thrown into a pit, with Cromwell’s head placed on a spike in Westminster, London. The actions however did not quell one Puritan group, who on this day, attempted to siege control of London. Named ‘The Fifth Monarchists’, after the reference to the kingdom of Christ described in the Bible, that would become dominant following the kingdoms of Babylon, Persia, Macedonia, and Rome; the group were led by a wine cooper named Thomas Venner. Venner and the group cited the upcoming year of 1666, as the millennial end of the world, due to its revelatory number in the Revelations of St. John. Failing in their aims, the group was imprisoned and eleven members including Venner were hanged, drawn, and quartered between the 19th and 21st January. That would appear to be the end of the apocalyptic fears, were it not for a bright comet which was seen in December 1664, and again in early 1665, and noted by both Samuel Pepys in his diary, and also later by Daniel Defoe in his "Journal of the Plague Year" written in 1722. Those witnessing the strange astronomical event would not have to wait very long to see what potential portent it carried with it. Europe 106 years ago today: Second Balkan War (31 Jul 1913) https://buff.ly/2LQLLhw Bulgaria had gained much territory in the war against the Ottomans, but less than what it had been promised. In June 1913, exactly one month after peace had been signed, it attacked Serbia for more land. However, in the war that followed, the Greeks, Montenegrins, Romanians, and Ottoman Turks sided with the Serbs, and Bulgaria ended up defeated on all sides. #europe #history #welovehistory #map #1910s #20thcentury #modernhistory #1913 #bulgaria #europeanhistory #greece #july #july31 #montenegro #romania #serbia #ottomanempire #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics #balkanwars #balkans #balkanwar (at Adrianoupolis, Edirne, Turkey) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0kuhwngQTb/?igshid=1uodvmtyid8mi
