Congressman General Robert Brown Elliott (August 11, 1842 – August 9, 1884) was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina.

He was born in Liverpool. He attended High Holborn Academy in London and then studied law, graduating from Eton College. From there he joined the British Royal Navy. He decided to settle in South Carolina. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar and began practicing law in Columbia.

He helped organize the local Republican Party and served in the state constitutional convention as a delegate. He was an associate editor of the South Carolina Leader. He formed the nation’s first known African American law firm, Whipper, Elliott, and Allen, with William Whipper and Macon B. Allen.

He was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He was appointed assistant adjutant-general; he was the first African American commanding general of the South Carolina National Guard. He helped form a state militia to fight the Ku Klux Klan.

He was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress. He was re-elected. He gave a notable speech on the “Bill to Enforce the Provisions of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution”, known as the “Ku Klux Bill”. He “delivered a celebrated speech” in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1875. He resigned to serve as sheriff and fight political corruption. He served again in the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he was elected as Speaker of the House.

Summary: Sherlock and Y/N find information on Lord Blackwood. Sherlock confronts Y/N and sees Irene.

Y/N was on edge the moment the black sack was over her head. What if these men worked for the Professor? What if they were going to take them to him? What if she was too late in saving herself Before Y/N even realized it, her hand had found Sherlocks, gripping it tightly. It took him a second, but eventually he intertwined his fingers with hers and began rubbing his thumb along the top of her hand.

Beneath the black sack over his head, Sherlock’s brows furrowed as Y/N gripped his hand. He could feel her pulse going haywire so he pushed his fingers through hers and rubbed his thumb along her hand. Her heart rate began to steadily slow with Sherlock’s comforting touch. He continued to do so as he focused on figuring out where they were being taken.

When the carriage came to a stop, both side doors were opened. Hands grabbed the two, pulling their hands apart and in opposite directions.

“Sherlock!” Y/N called out, trying to hide the fear that longed to pour out of her.

“I’m right here!” He replied. The two were roughly being led into a building. “I’m right here.”

That simple phrase brought comfort to Y/N, even as she still feared that she was being brought to the Professor. She tried to calm herself enough to notice the little things—the details that she had been trained to notice, yet had been failing to do in the midst of everything. Like the sound of footsteps. There were three men in front, one of them Sherlock, and two men beside Y/N, guiding her.

Y/N was shoved through a doorway and quickly pushed into a seat. The black sacks over Y/N and Sherlock’s heads were ripped off. It didn’t take either of them long to adjust to the light. They both turned to look at one another, making sure that the another was okay. The two chairs they were sitting in were close enough so that Sherlock could slyly rest his hand on her thigh.

“Mr. Holmes, apologies for summoning you and your friend like this,” an old man, sitting across from the table in front of them, said. “I’m sure it’s quite a mystery as to where you are and who I am.”

“As to where I am. I was admittedly lost for a moment between Charing Cross and Holborn. But I was saved by the bread shop on Saffron Hill, the only baker to use a certain French glaze on their loaves, a Brittany sage. After that the carriage forked left and right, then a telltale bump over the Fleet Conduit,” Sherlock responded, proving his intellect. “And as to who you are, that took over ounce of my not inconsiderable experience. The letters on your desk are addressed to Sir Thomas Rotheram.”

“Lord Chief Justice, is the official title,” Y/N added.

“Right. But who you really are is, of course, another matter entirely.” Sherlock leaned forward. “Judging by the sacred ox on your—“

“You’re the secret head of the Temple of the Four Orders,” Y/N interrupted. Sherlock tried to hide the impressed smirk as he turned towards her. “We are currently at the headquarters  on the Northwest corner of St. James’s Square, I think.”

“Quite right, my dear. The only real mystery is why you bothered to blindfold either of us at all.”

“Yes, well, standard procedure, I suppose,” Sir Thomas Rotheram responded, slightly taken back at their knowledge. The side door suddenly opened and two men walked in.

“I dare say we have the right man, gentlemen,” one of the two men said with an American accent. Sherlock, Y/N, and Sir Thomas all stood.

“Sherlock Holmes and…”

“Her name is none of your concern,” Sherlock quickly told Sir Thomas. This took Y/N by surprise, but she greatly appreciated it.

“Right. Well, Sherlock Holmes and ma’am, this is Ambassador Standish from America and Lord Coward, the home secretary.”

“I suppose you already have some notion as to the practices of our order,” Lord Coward said.

“Yes, um,” Sherlock responded, “They’re… uh… practically interesting.” He turned around to observe the room more.

“Be as skeptical as you like,” Sir Thomas replied, but our secret systems have steered the world towards good for centuries.” Sherlock walked over the to fireplace along the wall, staring into it. Y/N sat down, not knowing what to do with herself. “The danger is they can also be used for more nefarious purposes.”

“What some call the dark arts, or practical magic,” Lord Coward clarified.

“We know you don’t believe in magic, Mr. Holmes,” Ambassador Standish said. “We don’t expect you to share our faith merely our fears.”

“Fear is the more infectious condition,” Sherlock said. “In this instance… fear of your own child.” This caused Sir Thomas to perk up. Sherlock knocked on the fireplace before turning around to face the rest of them. “Blackwood is your son. You have the same irises, a rare dark green with diamond-shaped hazel flecks together with identical outer ears or Pinner,” Sherlock came up behind Y/N’s chair, resting his arms on the top of it, “which are—

  “Only past down through direct blood line,” Y/N said, catching on.

“Which, makes by necessity either brothers, or… in this case, more likely, father and son.” All three of the men across from Sherlock and Y/N shared a look of both worry and shame.

“Very few people are privy to that information, and we want to keep it that way,” Sir Thomas pled. “He was conceived during one of our rituals. His mother wasn’t my wife, but she shared our beliefs. She was a powerful practitioner, though not enough to survive giving birth to him. Death followed him wherever he went. Those five girls were not the first to be butchered. He killed many more, using them to enhance his powers.” Sir Thomas moved around the room to a small cabinet, opening it and pulling out something from it. “No one could prove anything, of course, but we all knew. The boy was a curse.” He walked up to Sherlock. “We’d done our best to stop  him ourselves, but it’s not enough.” 

Sir Thomas handed the detective a book. Sherlock began looking through it. Y/N stood up and went over to Sherlock so that she could see the book as well. It was full of strange pictures and writing in a different language.

“His power grows daily,” Lord Coward added. “His resurrection is evidence of that. But what he does next will be far more dangerous.”

“His secret lies in the book of spells,” Sir Thomas said, motioning to the book in Sherlock’s hands. “This is the source of his power. He’s gonna raise a force that will alter the course of the world.  We want you to find him and stop him before he does.”

“We’ll give you any assistance that we can.” Lord Coward moved closer to Sherlock and Y/N. “As home secretary, I have considerable influence over the police.”

“Hm, yes,” Sherlock hummed with a nod. He barely glanced the mans way before looking back at the book. He sniffed as he was clearly trying to study it.

“So… name your price.”

“Well, the great benefit of being a consulting detective is that I can pick and choose my clients. So consider it done, I’ll stop him…. But not for you.” Sherlock shut the book. “And certainly not for a price.” He then handed back to Sir Thomas. Sherlock took Y/N’s arm and began leading her away from the men. 

“I do have a partying query, Sir Thomas,” Y/N said, pausing both herself and Sherlock to glance back at the men. 

“What is that?” Sir Thomas questioned.

“If the rest of his family’s dead, how long do you expect to survive?” Sherlock smirked. Y/N did too after she turned around and headed towards the door. “Food for thought.”

Sherlock led Y/N out into the streets, silently. Y/N let him take the led because she was enjoying being close to him too much. Finally, when she decided that she should probably be concerned about where he was taking her, she spoke up.

“Where are we headed?” She asked.

“You’re heading home,” he responded. “I have an errand I have to run.”

“And why can’t I come with you?”

“Because it’s something I have to do alone.”

“Why did you protect my name?”

Sherlock stopped and looked right into Y/N’s eyes. “Why are you protecting it?” Y/N inhaled sharply. His eyes squinted as he studied hers. She swallowed, feeling so incredibly exposed at the moment. “No one seems to know your last name. And I can’t… you’re good at hiding your secrets. So good that even I can’t figure you out.”

“Sherlock…”

“Your mind is like mine, I’ve seen glimpses of it. And your strength is greater than an average woman. But you play off as innocent, naive.” He stepped closer, his brown eyes so intense. “What has got you so scared?”

Y/N shook her head, trying to stop herself from showing any emotions. She stepped back, away from Sherlock. “If I told you, you’d try to fix it. But I guess you’re already doing so because Sherlock Holmes hasn’t met a mystery that he hasn’t solved. Until me. I knew that I shouldn’t have let myself get close to anyone. That this was all a bad idea.”

“I can help you.”

“But you can’t save me.”

Sherlock lunged forward to stop her and Y/N walked backwards. She turned and rushed into the crowded streets and sidewalks. Using her knowledge, she blended in with the crowds. Sherlock quickly lost sight of her. She hid herself and watched as Sherlock tried searching, eventually leading himself away from the area. She closed her eyes and leaned back against the wall she was standing against. She knew that she was completely screwed. And it was time to run.

Sherlock knew that there was no point in searching for Y/N very long. If she wanted to disappear, she would. So he headed for the errand that he was suppose to be running. He needed to visit Irene Adler to talk about her case and, perhaps, she’d know something about Y/N. 

He arrived at Irene’s hotel room and knelt in front of the door. He got out his tools and began to try and pick the lock. From the other side of the door, Irene could hear what was happening. Knowing who it was, she picked up a bottle of wine and went over to the door. She opened the door, just dressed in a towel. Sherlock looked back down the hallway, trying to act innocent.

“Well, perhaps you’ll have better luck opening that,” Irene said, holding out the bottle to him.

“Margaux ’58. A comet vintage,” Sherlock read. He took the bottle from her and stood up. Irene walked away from the door and the man let himself in. “How fascinating that an astronomical even can affect the quality…” He paused as he shut the door, realizing that one, Irene was in a towel, and two, she was taking it off as she headed to change.

“How is it going with our case you refuse to take?”

“…of the wine.” Sherlock finally closed the door and went further into the room. “Oh, I’ve hit a dead end. Literally.” Irene turned away from Sherlock and slipped a robe on. Sherlock tossed his coat over a chair. “I found your man. He’s buried in Blackwood’s tomb. If you still need him.”

“Oh, dear.” She tried not to let the disappoint show, but she was failing. “Hope my client doesn’t come looking for a refund.”

“He’s a professor, isn’t he? couldn’t see his face, but I spotted chalk on his lapel. I’ve never known a professor to carry a gun, and on such a clever contraption.”

“Eye patch, nice touch. So… case closed. Which makes this a social visit.”

“No, it’s a you’re in over your head, Irene visit.” Starting to open the wine, Sherlock struggled a bit. “Whoever killed Reordan was covering their tracks which makes you the next loose end to be snipped.” He put the bottle between his legs and finally got the cork out.

“Let it breathe.” Sherlock sniffed the cork. “I’ve never been in over my head.”

“Leave now. Disappear.” He poured the wine into two classes. “You’re good at that. Or stay, and volunteer for protective custody.”

“If I’m in danger, so are you.” Irene walked over to him. “Come with me. What if we trusted each other? Hm?”

“You’re not listening. I’m taking you to either the railway station, or the police station.”

Irene studied Sherlock silently for a moment. “You’re not just here for me. You’re here about Y/N.”

“So you do know her.”

“Of course I do. Women like us have to in order to survive.”

Sherlock lifted up his glass and drank the whole thing. “Then you can tell me about her, on our way.” He could tell something was wrong almost immediately. There was something in that wine. “So…” He fell to the ground, barely holding his upper half up. “Which is it to be?”

“Careful.”

“You.. decide… which will it be?”

Irene quickly rushed to hold Sherlock up. “I told you to let it breathe. Can you taste the comet?” She pressed his face into her neck. “Why couldn’t you just come away with me?”

“N-never.”

“Oh, Sherlock…” She forced his lips onto hers. “Y/N’s the same as me. You can’t save either of us.” She kissed him again, only stopping when he was completely passed out.

Ladies Who Lunched: Watson and Stamford at the Holborn Restaurant

(This is an ongoing series about the historical case for how canon Sherlock Holmes and John Watson could have been women. It is leading up to the launch of my new web novel series on Patreon, Ladies of Baker Street—a sapphic/wlw, Victorian women adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.

“I was standing at the Criterion Bar, when some one tapped me on the shoulder, and turning round I recognized young Stamford, who had been a dresser under me at Barts. The sight of a friendly face in the great wilderness of London is a pleasant thing indeed to a lonely man. In old days Stamford had never been a particular crony of mine, but now I hailed him with enthusiasm, and he, in his turn, appeared to be delighted to see me. In the exuberance of my joy, I asked him to lunch with me at the Holborn, and we started off together in a hansom.” (A Study In Scarlet, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) Throughout this series, I’ve been looking at how ACD canon Holmes and Watson could be women in the late Victorian era. Last time, we explored the New Woman movement, which opened up the chance for women to have education, careers, and an independent life in spite of the “angel of the home” Victorian ideal.

What I love most about writing historical fiction, and what drew me to creating a female Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson set in the Victorian era, is how you can find whole stories in the smallest historical details. For example, the struggle women went through to gain the right to earn a medical degree, and the way the male medical students fought against that. That right there is deserving of a whole novel, movie, or TV show! (Please, somebody, do this!)

On a more mundane level, something as simple as going to a restaurant can have an entire subversive history we don’t even know about—because for many of us, we are privileged enough that we just haven’t needed to consider it. But throughout the world and throughout history, women have had to fight for even these small freedoms, and this fight is ongoing today.

Dining In the Victorian Era

For British women, the ability to dine in a public place evolved over the course of the 1800’s. In the Regency Era, it wouldn’t have been considered very respectable for women to dine in public, even if they were being escorted by men. But by the time of Sherlock Holmes (1880’s), it was pretty common for women to dine out with men or even on their own.

Because of the increase in female workers and shoppers, there was more of a need for places for these women to eat. Tea shops catered to working women, and department stores opened their own dining rooms so that women shoppers would stay longer and spend more money (food courts, anyone?).

Hotels and other kinds of venues also welcomed women diners. Some had women-only dining rooms for women eating out without male company, but there are also reports of groups of women dining in the main dining rooms as well. In the late 1880's there was even a restaurant that only served women!

Tipping was a common and expected practice, since waiters might not make any wages at all and might even be paying the restaurant to work there! There was not a standard tipping rate—you tipped what you felt like tipping, or…not at all—and the tips were often rounded up and divided among the waitstaff on a weekly basis. Sometimes, unscrupulous waiters or restaurant managers would steal the week’s tips or divide them unfairly.

Women became waitresses, and it was considered a step up from domestic service. Many waiters were from countries outside of Britain. Some waiters would stick it out and end up becoming managers or even opening their own restaurants. In a city like London, you could find lots of international cuisines, including curry, French, Italian, Kosher, and German.

The Holborn Restaurant

The Holborn started out in the 1840’s as a public swimming pool. By some accounts, it was dirty and smelly—not a very pleasant place for recreation. But the water was drained off and the pool covered, and the place was turned into a “casino”—which apparently meant at that time a dance hall, not a gambling hall.

The restaurant was opened there in 1874, and by the late 1870’s it had a reputation for being a very elegant, tasteful place to dance, dine, and listen to music. Various writers describe the white and gold-gilded entry, marble floors and tables, and the “rich and tasteful” decorations.

The dancing saloon had balconies and alcoves with marble tables, and there was an orchestra at one end, far enough removed so that the music didn’t interfere with the conversations at the tables. To dance, one would go downstairs to the dance floor.

Entry cost 1 shilling per person.

Common menu items included turtle soup, mulligatawny, “Ribs of Beef and Horseradish. Brussels Sprouts,” “Bouchées a l’Impératrice,” and Caroline Pudding, St. Honoré Cake, or Kirsch Jelly for dessert, along with various ices. (Please note, I have absolutely no idea what several of these are, but they sound very interesting!)

Dinner at the Holborn in 1879 cost on average 3 shilling, 6 pence per person. I don’t know if that included the 1 shilling entry fee or not, but it did include listening to the band.

Women At the Holborn

There was apparently a separate women’s dining room, but women commonly ate in the main dining spaces as well. Many actresses and the mistresses of wealthy men frequented the Holborn, but so did women of the middle and upper classes of society. They were considered to be respectable, fashionable, and well-behaved.

However, according to some reports, if some of the women got a little tipsy and started raising their skirts too high or otherwise being “unruly,” they would get kicked out. No word on if the same standard was applied to male customers.

Speaking of double standards, though, one intriguing tidbit I found was this description of same-sex couples dancing. Note the different reaction to the female couples versus the male couples:

“Occasionally you will see two girls waltzing, and men who have sat too long at the dinner-table will, once in an evening, get up together and dance a "stag dance." But this is not encouraged by the master of ceremonies, as the dancing of a pair of male bipeds is not calculated to help the business of the place, and it is instantly suppressed, amid cheers and laughter.” (Daniel Joseph Kirwan, Palace and Hovel : Phases of London Life, 1878)

Given all this, it seems totally plausible that a female Dr. Watson and Miss Stamford could easily have lunch at the Holborn. They could have chosen to dine in the main balcony dining space overlooking the dance floor (which may have been somewhat empty during the day), or they could have chosen to eat in the Ladies Grill-Room if they felt more comfortable there.

The biggest problem for Dr. Watson would have been affording such a meal for herself, and possibly for Stamford, given her dwindling funds at the time. They would have been better off, perhaps, finding a cozy tea shop for less. But maybe Dr. Watson wanted to impress her fellow medical student, or maybe she was simply tired of scrimping and being alone and recovering from illness and injury and just wanted to pretend for a little while that she could be like the other carefree, independent women enjoying a meal out that day.

Whatever the reason, the Holborn it was. And from there, she and Stamford would go on to meet her destiny.

Hello and welcome to the 4th edition of the newsletter. I'm writing this from an old haunted-looking flat in Edinburgh, but we'll get to that later.

Last Sunday, I meandered around the neighborhood Brick Lane with three of my Columbia/LSE friends. Brick Lane is primarily known as the vintage shopping area, and it's filled with thrift stores. There's even an entire underground thrift store mall. We got bagels at Beigel Bake, and then went to some stores. I found a 1970s pressing of In the Court of the Crimson King, which is one of my favorite albums.

Later that night, I went to Lord Palmerston, the fireplace pub.

Thus began my first week (of three) with no class. This week (Feb 14-18), the LSE teacher's union is striking against various destructive labor/management practices at the university, so even though two of my three professors were opting out of the strike, I chose to not attend any class.

On Monday, I went down to campus to join a picket briefly, before going to a cute French cafe with my friend to get hot chocolate. I went from there to a cafe in a bookstore, where I did work and applied for jobs.

That night, I went back to Lord Palmerston.

The next day, I went for a long walk around my neighborhood, and saw this cool church (which I've taken pictures of before, but not from this angle)

On Wednesday, I went downtown again around midday to participate in a longer picket/teach in at LSE, and saw some adorable dogs.

Thursday night, I went to Happy Lamb Hot Pot in Holborn (yes, the name is bad), which also has branches in Eden Center in Northern Virginia, and Cambridge MA. Vegetarian hot pot is great. I also saw this sign (edited slightly by me).

On Friday, there were hurricane-force winds (or warnings) across London all day, and we were advised not to go outside, so I stayed in all day.

On Saturday, I went to King's Cross station and got on a train to Edinburgh with my two closest friends in my program! Here's me and one of my friends playing Smash on the train.

When we left London, it was grey and about 48. By mid-country, the fields were covered with snow.

Then, a few hours later, we saw the North Sea (never seen this other than maybe from a plane).

And Tyne (upon which Newcastle is).

Also, the countryside was quite nice.

My phone is getting extremely laggy and I'm approaching tumblr's image cap on a single post, so I'm going to cut this here and do another post about Edinburgh itself once we're done here on Thursday. Thanks for reading.
