Horizontal Stacking Versus Intelligent Vertical Integration
When it comes to ProcureTech development what is the difference between "Horizontal Stacking" and "Intelligent Vertical" integration solutions?
“I am dividing the frontend functional solutions from the AI operating system providers – the two categories of solution providers emerging after the 2025 shake-up.” – Procurement Insights An Example of A Frontend Functional Solution Provider Last month, I posted the article Globality Demo > The Road to the ProcureTech Cup: Episode 25-06, where I provided a fair assessment. Here is the link to…

I might actually have to fucking kill the 3 moons thing in my setting. I might have to do it. Like I'm willing to just completely ignore how having 3 large satellites would absolutely change conditions from 1:1 earthlike in major ways, but I can't(??? maybe) have the moons be visible in different phases in any given day.
Like:
Per this highly professional diagram, if the 3 moons are each in these circled (relative) positions to the sun on their respective orbits, an earth viewer would see each 'rise' and 'set' over the course of a given day in 3 separate phases right?? This is definitely elementary school basic but my brain is fucking fried right now so bear with me.
On one hand (still wholly ignoring planetary physics) this could be an opportunity for more complex worldbuilding in ways that would be fun for me (special significance when all 3 are visible in the same phase, loads of implications for astrology systems, etc) but on the other hand the lunisolar calendar system I painstakingly figured out and is important to the story would be in fucking shambles because I didn't think of this issue until now somehow.
#Actually never mind I'm starting to change my mind back because this could be cool to integrate but I will have to cheap the#fuck out and go 'they based their lunisolar calendar on just one of the moons that is the biggest in the sky and just so happens to#have the identical orbital period as the irl moon' with it in order to salvage it without a crazy/not fun amount of rewrites#I can definitely Justify why some cultures would defer to this moon exclusively for timekeeping (biggest in sky + apparent correlation with#human menstrual cycle). Some absolutely would. And lunar calendars that only take one moon's orbit into account would#probably be common given the complexity of the math involved to work out a system for all 3 which would not be a priority for many#peoples who just need to keep time and mark the seasons in ways relevant to their lives. But in this case it IS cheaping out#Actually thinking back I might have had this fully in mind at one point wayyyyyyy early on and then Forgor#I remember early writings ascribing significance to a 'triple horned moon' (all three would be in the same relative positions in their#orbits and appear as a horizontal crescent) (this wouldn't have significance if they were always seen in the same phases)

This really was the Empire Strikes Back of season endings. Like, we are all fucked.
Rand has secured the army that he absolutely needs -- and the Aiel found their chosen one -- but the Aiel have had their worldview shattered and Rand as a person is deteriorating with no sign of rescue in sight.
Egwene followed her own moral compass out of the Tower and into the Aiel Waste, and I hardly need to recap how that's going for her. Aviendha is duty-bound to a leader whose worst failings she's seen in far too personal a way (and she might've fallen for romantically at the same time). Back in Two Rivers, Perrin protected his loved ones -- but now his life is in the hands of a legal system he knows to be unjust.
Moiraine and Lan, again, I hardly need to summarize. Technically, they accomplished everything they set out to in this finale, that being "protect Rand from Lanfear or die trying." Now Moiraine wishes she was dead. And Lan's duty is perhaps heavier on him than it has ever been.
Wondergirls (Y Mat!) failed so badly in Tanchico that they actually wound up collecting two of the three artifacts and delivering them right into the villains' hands. Despite having some personal breakthroughs along the way, the best they managed to do in their mission was escape with their lives (and this DILF they found). Oh and Mat is cursed again by some new shit we've never even heard of before, because of course he is.
So now they're sailing away... towards the discovery that things are even worse. Up till now there was one person on the Light side with geopolitical power. Reinforcements, a physical safe haven, a hub of hard and soft power in the world at large. But all that power turned out to be a house of cards, and she fucking DIED.
The good guys who came out of this finale with the lightest burden were Siuan and Melindhra, because they fucking DIED. Siuan fought all season and lost everything but her integrity, her love -- her soul, both figuratively and literally. Melindhra quite literally lost her soul itself for one dying act of heroism.
From out here, we can see how hollow the triumphs of the antagonists are. Liandrin, completely lost as a human being, foreswearing even her love for her child. Elaida, dictator of an empty palace, feeling so righteous as she unwittingly elevates the Black Ajah and murders the real hero of the Tower. But however empty it is, they still do control the horizontal and the vertical. Everything is in question. The next safe harbor is unknown. We stand on the deck of the Rebel medical frigate Seafolk ship and look to the sky -- which doesn't have any answers either.
#wheel of time#wot on prime#wot s3 spoilers#to be clear just in case anyone doesn't understand star wars: the empire strikes back is the best star wars movie.

i think they're meant to be a keiretsu ! they're a type of Japanese business conglomerate where several independent companies and a main bank (that is typically their primary lender) work closely together, and hold stock in each other
similar to Mitsubishi, Yotsuba would be a horizontal keiretsu (companies of different sectors), as opposed to a vertical keiretsu like Toyota (companies all along the supply chain). this explains why they have such varied activities, and why the Yotsuba members (heads of those different companies, i assume) were already in a circular collaboration dynamic before the death note was introduced
keiretsu were more central in the 20th century (from post ww2 when they replaced the zaibatsu model, until the early 2000s economic crashes) but still remain an important part of Japanese economics, and aspects of their functioning exported all around the world
i remembered most of this from my geography classes but when fact-checking, i read this extremely snarky paper from Dan W. Puchniak, professor of commercial law, called A Skeptic's Guide to Miwa and Ramseyer's ‘The Fable of the Keiretsu’. really recommend for a quick and interesting discussion of their place in Japanese economics (along with some stats)
im finally gonna say it. What the hell do Yotsuba actually do.
#dn#olorea talks#i love you vertical and horizontal integration theory <- scientific interest only. that started at age 14 for some fucking reason#thanks for giving me a chance to look more into it !! i lacked a push but the death note fandom always has my back <33 lrkgnejtnhr#txt

A one-night stand years ago gave you a daughter and you are now able to put a name to her father – Matthew Murdock. chapter masterlist
Words: 3.8k
ao3 link
As the clock ticks over from morning to midday, the city is ravaged by the first storm of the season. Howling winds force the sheets of rain to fall near horizontally while lightning streaks across the sky over the bay. Run off threatens to flood the subways and sewers and power has begun to flicker in certain neighborhoods. The news is advising everyone to stay indoors, and it seems that for once the people of New York are listening.
But the weather is none of your concern as you drag your nails over Matt’s scalp. From your spot on the couch, you watch with satisfaction as his Adam’s apple bobs in his throat and you have a distinct feeling he is holding back an absolutely filthy moan. You’ve begun to learn just exactly what he likes, so to get out the noise you desire, you guide your fingers towards his temples, then rake your claws through the dark hair there.
The reaction is instantaneous. He presses back into the couch, pushing his head against you more as a low pleased noise escapes his lips.
“Daddy, don’t move!” Mouse chastises from where she sits on the floor in front of him. One of his large hands is laid across her lap and your little one has been oh so carefully turning his nails a lovely shade of ballerina pink.
“I’m sorry, angel,” the man melting into your touch mumbles, “Mommy’s hands just feel really good.”
To emphasize his point, you begin to flex your fingers, gently scratching Matt’s head and treating him like an overgrown cat. As he leans more into your hands, you flash a mischievous grin to your daughter, sending her into a fit of giggles.
Deciding you have had your fill of physical teasing for the moment, you dance your fingers to the back of Matt’s skull before flattening them so you can smooth down his neck and across his shoulders. You hunch forward for better access, then push your hands down his bare chest, stopping when you’ve reached his pecs. You’ve angled it so you are loosely draped around him, with your lips beside his ear.
“How about I make us a snack while you finish up with Daddy?” You ask Minnie, who eagerly nods in response.
“Apples, please! Thank you!”
“Okay, I’ll cut up some apples.”
As one last little flirt, you dig your nails into Matt’s chest before you begin to pull away. As if not to be outdone by your playfulness, he turns his head and quickly plants two kisses on your cheek.
Minnie lets out an absolute squeal of delight while you feel your entire being heat up with slight embarrassment and anxiety. While you’ve been nervous about possibly confusing her with public displays of affection, Matt has had no qualms about it, and you are starting to think he is on the right track. Mouse has been positively thrilled about your developing relationship and seems to be the biggest cheerleader for it.
You are terrified for her for when it inevitably comes to an end, but you tell yourself it won’t affect her relationship with Matt. You are determined to see to it that no matter what happens between you and Matt physically, it will not be detrimental to your daughter.
As you move away from the couch and head to the kitchen, you tell yourself it is okay that she sees her Mommy and Daddy kissing. It is a normal thing for a child to experience and it isn’t like you are being lewd or inappropriate around her. Light teasing is perfectly acceptable, and you have been teasing Matt, after all.
Still, your heart pounds in your chest as Minnie returns to playing manicurist.
“You gots to keep your hands super extra still, or I’ms gonna get pink all over them.”
“I’ll keep them super extra still,” Matt promises and you have a feeling he is going to be true to his word. You know that with all of his training and abilities, he can probably keep his hand from moving even a micrometer and he is not one to disappoint his little girl.
You pluck two apples from your fruit bowl and bring them to the sink to wash. You have become much more thorough in your rinsing, now overly hyper aware of things like pesticides and wax. You might not taste such things, but the two other members of your small family can and it is your responsibility to make sure everything is as clean as can be. You have a new special produce brush, and you scrub at the apples until they practically sparkle, enjoying the sounds of Mouse and Matt bonding as you do.
“This finger has more ouchies,” you hear Minnie advise. “It’s gonna need…gonna need three more kissies to make it better. Ands a shot!”
“And a shot?” Matt asks and you peek over your shoulder to see your daughter nodding in response.
You don’t fight the smile that comes to your lips and turn back to your task.
You are pretty sure Matt’s knuckles are permanently scraped up from his nights out as a vigilante. His hands are covered in dozens of small, barely noticeable scars.
Unfortunately, many of his other injuries aren’t as easily overlooked. There is currently a large bruise poking out from the top of his pajama pants along his hip and the moment it was seen, Doctor Minnie jumped into action. While she didn’t question where it came from, she did prescribe kisses and bandages to remedy it, and once a pink band-aid was placed on it, Matt let her know he was all healed. You could tell he had felt extremely guilty that she had witnessed the byproduct of his late nights out and you have the feeling he is going to be even more cautious about letting people leave marks on him.
But if that is what keeps him safe, you are more than happy to let your daughter unknowingly guilt trip him.
You take your time in slicing up the apples. The nail polish you purchased is quick drying, but it does need a minute or so to work and Minnie isn’t the fastest at applying it. You watch as she practically doubles over Matt’s left hand as she works, and you can see her little tongue stuck out in concentration. To her credit, she’s only gotten a few smudges on his skin, and they will be easy enough to peel off when dry.
You guess he must sense you watching him, because Matt flashes you a nice big smile. “No pictures to share with Foggy this time?” he asks, the joke clear in his voice.
“I don’t want him getting jealous and coming over to crash our spa day,” you reply with your own smile. “Unless that is what you want?”
Minnie’s head shoots up and her lips turn down into a little scowl. “No Froggy! I don’ts have green! I gots to get green for Froggy’s!”
You do in fact own green nail polish, but you are not going to correct her over this. Instead, you get curious about her color associations.
“What about Auntie Karen? What color would you do her nails?”
Minnie screws up her face in thought before declaring, “Orange! Auntie Karen and Mister Frank are orange and Max is blue! Like his collar! He’s gotta match and be pretty!”
“And Mommy and Daddy are pink?” Matt confirms, holding up the hand that is already done being painted and wiggling his fingers.
“Yeah!” Mouse practically shouts. “‘Cause it’s my favoritest and yous are my favoritest peoples. But I gets sparkles ‘cause they are pretty.”
“Can I get sparkles next time?” the wonderful man that is her father asks and by the way Minnie’s face lights up, you already know the answer.
“We can match!” Then, with the quickness only a toddler can achieve, snatches up the hand she was working on and hunches back over it. “But you are pinks today! So, you can match Mommy!”
You feel warm and pleased at her words. It is hard to feel anxious when she is so excited about you and Matt being a pair.
You admire your own nails as you fetch a plate to put the apple slices on. You had done yours and Minnie’s last night in preparation for your spa day, and while they are simple, the pale pink your daughter picked out is truly a flattering color.
You return to the living room with a plate of snacks and set them on the coffee table before sitting on the ground beside Matt. You watch as Minnie finishes up lacquering his pinky, giving a small applause when she finishes.
“You did such a good job, Mouse.”
“Thank you very much!” She replies, beaming up at you. She thrusts the polish brush and bottle at you, and you close it up tight while Matt holds up his hands and spreads out his fingers.
“I feel so fancy. Thank you, princess.”
“You’re welcomes, Daddy!” Mouse replies before whirling around and grabbing an apple slice to shove into her mouth.
You shake your head fondly at her antics before reaching for your own snack. As you do, Matt playfully bumps his shoulder into yours and holds his hand out in front of you, palm down. Thinking he is asking for a piece of apple, you take one and offer it out.
To your surprise, he shakes his head.
“I think the good doctor prescribed me three kissies for my fingers. Do you mind fulfilling that order?”
Once again, you feel your body heat up, but instead of the expected embarrassment, it is a pleasant, warm feeling. You bite your lip, then, delicately and very much shyly take his hand in your free one. You guide it up to your mouth, then, counting out loud as you do, place one, two, and three soft kisses to his knuckles.
The smile Matt gives you is brighter than you’ve ever seen it.
Your heart clenches in your chest and your throat gets tight - not from anxiety but from him literally taking your breath away. For the briefest of moments, all you can see is him and his beautiful happiness. His emotions reach out and wrap around your soul and without even realizing it, you are returning his smile.
Not wanting to break the moment with something stupid, you slowly turn his hand, so it is palm up and place the apple slice into it.
“This should help, too,” you breathe out, unable to take your gaze off of his face. “An apple a day and all that.”
His expression softens and he gives the smallest of nods as he replies just as quietly, “Thank you, darling.”
A giddiness you are not used to runs down your spine and you finally force yourself to avert your gaze. To keep yourself from blurting something out, you mimic your daughter and bite into your apple slice.
Ever not aware of the emotions swirling in the air, your daughter stands up, another apple slice in her hand, and declares, “We’s should do face masks now!”
Grateful for her suggestion of a distraction, you quickly agree, “Face masks sound perfect. Do you want to do the sheet masks or the clay one?”
Minnie toddles around to the other side of the coffee table, where all your spa day supplies are laid out. You have a caddy of nail polish, a caddy of hair supplies, and a caddy of different facial treatments. This is not Mouse’s first rodeo with self-pamper days and she expertly starts going through the different types of masks available. She pulls them out one by one, examining the packaging carefully before discarding the non-acceptable ones.
You chew your snack silently while you watch her sort through them, curious which she will choose for each of you. The first one to be set aside is a sheet mask that has a tiger face printed on it, then there is a Hello Kitty one, and finally a panda. She pats her pile triumphantly before putting the ones not deemed worthy back into the caddy one at a time.
“I don’t think I’ve ever done a face mask,” Matt comments as he finishes a second apple slice. “What do they do?”
“They moisturize your skin,” you say just as Minnie chimes, “They make you softs!”
He laughs, and ever the good sport, agrees to let you put one on him.
Minnie, of course, wants to be Hello Kitty, and you get assigned to be a panda, leaving Matt as the tiger. As you explain to Matt the procedure and what exactly you are going to be doing to his face, Mouse grabs the television remote and brings up one of her cartoons. She knows the mask should stay on the length of one episode, but first she must choose what is acceptable for a relaxing time.
As she makes her hard choice, you help Matt apply his mask. You guide him to tilt his head back, then gentle as you can, lay it out.
“It doesn’t smell nearly as bad as I thought it would,” he hums as you begin to smooth it out.
You don’t respond, instead focusing on making sure there are no wrinkles and that the mask is touching as much skin as possible. Under your fingers, his eyes flutter close and you hope he is finding the day as relaxing as it is meant to be.
In front of you, Mouse has selected the short she wants to watch and has turned her attention to her mask. She clearly needs no help as she rips it open and begins to unfold it. She is far less gentle with it than you are and practically smacks it onto her face. It is too big for her, but she doesn’t care, and as soon as it is partially where it needs to be, she flops down on her back, arms and legs spread out.
“Ahhhh,” she sighs out, content as can be. You have no doubts she is enjoying her day of pampering.
You are as quick as your little one to get your mask on, but much more precise. Once it is patted down, you sit back down beside Matt, a hair’s breadth away from his shoulder, and close your eyes.
The coolness of the mask is something you do find relaxing. In a strange way, it helps to center you and block out all the external stressors in your life. Sitting against the couch, you feel like you are in your own little world.
At least, until Matt’s hand finds yours and he laces your fingers together.
Once again, he has your breath catching in your chest.
Karen’s voice sings out in your head before your anxiety has a chance to process things and your free hand shoots up to wrap around the gem hanging from your neck - the one you have yet to take off since it was put on.
She called it a confession. She said he glowed when he spoke about you.
Was it similar to the glow he had when you kissed his fingers? Or the one you felt when you fell into his arms in your kitchen?
Does he get breathless over you? Does his heartbeat wildly enough to make him dizzy?
You can’t see how you could possibly cause those types of reactions in him - you aren’t anything special. You know you are No One and the only person in the whole universe who would choose you still has trouble putting on her own shoes.
But, if you make Matt happy, in any way, isn’t that a good thing?
Isn’t that what you want? To make someone happy?
If him holding your hand and kissing your cheek makes him light up like it does, why should you deny him of it? Afterall, you like it, too, even if it confuses you.
You know that eventually it will all come to an end, but you don’t want it to be because you keep being so skittish about his affections. You fear you will inevitably hurt him if you keep acting the way you do because you know the one thing Matt wants more than anything is to be a Family.
If anyone is going to be hurt by this relationship, it is going to be you and you will not have it any other way.
You give the ruby one last squeeze as you make up your mind. As you let your hand drop down into your lap, you scoot that millimeter closer to Matt and slide down a bit so you can rest your head on his shoulder. It is a little awkward, but it isn’t the worst thing in the world - especially when he squeezes your hand tight and drops a kiss to the top of your head. Moisturizer gets in your hair, but that is perfectly fine.
You stay tucked against him as the cartoon plays out on the television. You half listen to it and half focus on Matt’s thumb rubbing over your knuckles.
As soon as the credits begin to roll, Minnie is bouncing up and ripping off her mask.
“So refreshing!” she cooes, rubbing her hands along her cheeks.
“It is,” Matt replies, letting go of your hand to remove the sheet from his face and you do the same with your own. “I wouldn’t say no to doing that again.”
You take up the trash from the face masks and go to toss them as your daughter decides the next course of action. She is back at the caddies, going through the hair supplies, looking for who knows what. Out of the corner of your eyes, you see Matt push himself up, so he is sitting on the couch.
“What if we give Mommy a massage?” he asks and before you can even process what is being said, Mouse is cheering and agreeing.
“Mommy! Come sits so we can massages you! I can do your feets!”
You stare dumbly at them for a few seconds, letting the suggestion wash over you, before you cautiously make your way back to Matt and sit on the floor between his legs. Mouse instantly plops right in front of you and demands that you put a foot in her lap, so you do as you are told.
As she pulls off your socks and begins to tug at your toes, Matt’s hands smooth over your shoulders. It is different from the massage you gave him all those nights ago - he clearly knows what he is doing. He finds a knot right away and with a few circles of his thumb it is melting away. You quickly become putty under his hands.
Your little one is just as determined as Matt is to make you relax, though she doesn’t know the techniques. She rubs her little fist over the arch of your foot as hard as she can, and it actually feels really good.
You could very much get used to this treatment.
You lose track of time as they work you over, though you are sure it must only be a few minutes. Minnie makes you trade out your feet while Matt moves to your neck, and he teases the base of your skull with his nails, making you smile.
You can understand why he enjoys it so much.
Then suddenly, Matt’s hands freeze, and you feel him still behind you.
Before you can ask what is wrong, he is telling you the answer, “Someone just taped something to your door. They are putting it on all the doors in the building.”
You figure it is your landlord doing some sort of maintenance announcement, but curiosity gets the better of you and you get up to go see what it could possibly be. Minnie is at your heel as you go.
“I can help you read it! I’m learning big words now!”
“You are learning your big words,” you praise. “Soon you’ll be reading to me and Daddy. Have you been practicing your Braille?”
Her curls bounce as she nods vigorously. “I knows the whole alphabet!”
You don’t think that is quite true, but you like her confidence. She has certainly been very keen to learn math and reading since meeting Spider-man. You are pretty sure she’s going to fly past the expected milestones for a four-year-old soon enough.
You are cautious as you open the front door and sure enough, a notice is posted there. You snatch it up, then quickly close and lock the door, leaning against it as you read. At your side, Mouse reaches up for the paper, wanting her turn with it, but you ignore her for the moment.
You feel the color drain from your face, and you read the words out loud so both Matt and Minnie know what is happening, “‘Starting Sunday at eight am, the water in the building will be shut off as we repair the pipes connecting to the city’s water supply. We expect the repairs to be finished by Friday and for the water to be turned back on by Saturday morning. We are sorry for the inconvenience.’” You crumple the paper in your hand and groan, “No water for a week?”
“We can’ts drink water for a whole week?” Minnie exclaims from your knee, sounding put out as you feel. She yanks the notice from your hand and runs right to her Daddy to show it to him. “We’ll die! We needs water! Mommy loves water!”
Matt is prepared for his daughter’s onslaught and scoops her up, so she is on his hip. He takes the paper from her as he makes his way back to you and holds it out to return it. You take it with a sigh. “You won’t die, sweetpea. And Mommy isn’t going to not have water. You can come stay with me for the week. It will be like a long sleep over.”
“I love sleep overs!” Mouse says, despite never having spent the night away from the apartment.
You know better than to try to argue with Matt on the subject and the fact is you can’t. You don’t have the funds to rent a hotel room for the week and if Matt was not here to offer his place, you would pretty much be screwed. You would have probably ended up staying and dragging Minnie down to the bodega everytime she needed to pee and using bottled water to give her a bath.
But that doesn’t mean the monster in your chest is happy about it. It is already crawling up your spine and undoing all of Matt’s work in making you relax and there is nothing you can do to fight it. All you can tell yourself is everything will be okay and as always you are panicking over nothing.
You push yourself off the door and go to Matt and Mouse. You squeeze her little arm while you lean in and place a sweet kiss to Matt’s cheek, determined to let him have his Family.
“I’ll go start packing our bags.”

The differences between the F-35A and C variants, one of the most notable are the trailing edge control surfaces for the main horizontal wing. The A variant has a single “flaperon” which spans 90% of the trailing edge of each wing. In addition to controlling the roll or bank of the aircraft, as do conventional ailerons, both flaperons can be lowered together to reduce stall speed, similarly to a set of flaps. This is often done as a part of the weight minimization strategy. The C variant, in addition to having flaperons, has a set of ailerons that extend to the tip of the trailing edge. The larger surfaces allow for more precise control at slower speeds, such as the approach to a carrier. The F-35 has a system called Integrated Direct Lift Control (IDLC) that translates pilot stick commands into choreographed changes to engine power and control surface movement. It’s the wave of the future as it makes flying the aircraft much easier during traditionally high pilot workload flight regimes.

Writing Notes: Emotions
“Emotion” is a term that came into use in the English language in the 17th and 18th centuries as a translation of the French term “émotion” but did not designate “a category of mental states that might be systematically studied” until the mid-19th century (Dixon 2012: 338; see also Dixon 2003; Solomon 2008).
Many of the things we call emotions today have been the object of theoretical analysis since Ancient Greece, under a variety of language-specific labels such as passion, sentiment, affection, affect, disturbance, movement, perturbation, upheaval, or appetite.
This makes for a long and complicated history, which has progressively led to the development of a variety of shared insights about the nature and function of emotions, but no consensual definition of what emotions are, either in philosophy or in affective science.
3 Traditions in the Study of Emotions
Emotions as: Feelings, Evaluations, and Motivations
Although emotion theories differ on multiple dimensions, they can be usefully sorted into three broad traditions:
The Feeling Tradition - takes the way emotions feel to be their most essential characteristic, and defines emotions as distinctive conscious experiences.
The Evaluative Tradition - regards the way emotions construe the world as primary, and defines emotions as being (or involving) distinctive evaluations of the eliciting circumstances.
The Motivational Tradition - defines emotions as distinctive motivational states.
(Scarantino, 2016)
Each tradition faces the task of articulating a prescriptive definition of emotions that is theoretically fruitful and compatible at least to some degree with ordinary linguistic usage.
And although there are discipline-specific theoretical objectives, there also is a core set of explanatory challenges that tends to be shared across disciplines:
Differentiation: How are emotions different from one another, and from things that are not emotions?
Motivation: Do emotions motivate behavior, and if so, how?
Intentionality: Do emotions have object-directedness, and if so, can they be appropriate or inappropriate to their objects?
Phenomenology: Do emotions always involve subjective experiences, and if so of what kind?
Emotions as Constructions
Constructionists are convinced that emotions are put together on the fly and in flexible ways using building blocks that are not specific to emotions, roughly in the way cooked foods are constructed from ingredients that are not specific to them and could be used according to alternative recipes.
One of the ingredients out of which emotions are built is said to be core affect, which is a:
neurophysiological state that is consciously accessible as a simple, nonreflective feeling that is an integral blend of hedonic (pleasure–displeasure) and arousal (sleepy–activated) values. (Russell 2003: 147)
Psychological constructionists emphasize that we are always in some state of core affect, which is a sort of barometer that informs us of our “relationship” to the flow of events.
The readings of the barometer are feelings, understood as blends of pleasure-displeasure and activation-deactivation.
These readings can be represented as points along a “circumplex structure”, with the vertical axis representing the degree of activation-deactivation and the horizontal axis representing the degree of pleasure-displeasure (Russell 1980).
Despite the great diversity of views on the nature and function of emotions, a broad consensus has emerged on a number of topics. Here is a tentative list of what a plurality of emotion theorists agree about, with brief mention of where the disagreements begin:
ONE. Emotion episodes involve, at least in prototypical cases, a set of evaluative, physiological, phenomenological, expressive, behavioral, and mental components that are diagnostic of emotions and are to some degree correlated with one another.
The degree to which these correlations are instantiated continues to be a central topic of theoretical debate: latent variable models assume that emotions cause the changes in components and expect to find strong correlations, whereas emergent variable models assume that emotions emerge from changes in components caused by something other than emotions and expect to find weak correlations.
TWO. Token episodes of the same folk emotion type (e.g., anger, fear, shame) manifest a great deal of variability with respect to expressive, behavioral, physiological and phenomenological features, as well as intensity, duration, valence, arousal, type and range of intentional objects.
Researchers disagree on whether underlying all this variability there exist measurable bodily patterns of some kind that are still distinctive of different emotions.
THREE. Emotions have intentionality or the ability to represent.
Researchers disagree on whether emotions represent descriptively or imperatively or both, on what exact contents they represent, and on what grounds the emotion-world representation relation. A small minority of researchers, hailing mostly from the enactivist movement, have argued that emotions lack representational qualities.
FOUR. The physical seat of emotions is the brain, but there are no neural circuits that correspond one-to-one with any folk emotion type, and brains are embodied and embedded in environments that are essential to their proper functioning.
Researchers disagree on how exactly the brain implements tokens of different emotion types, and whether emotional phenomena are best understood in terms of emotion-specific or emotion-unspecific neural mechanisms.
FIVE. Emotions typically involve conscious experiences, but such experiences are not strictly necessary for an emotion to be instantiated, in part because some emotion terms refer to dispositions and in part because most theorists consider feelings conceptually distinct from non-dispositional emotions.
A handful of influential researchers such as LeDoux (2017) and Barrett (2017) continue to identify emotions with conscious experiences.
SIX. Evolutionary and socio-cultural considerations must both contribute to our understanding of a great many emotions’ functions. These are both intra-personal functions —e.g., helping organisms coordinate organismic resources to deal with urgent demands—and interpersonal functions —e.g., communicating information useful for the negotiation of social transactions.
Researchers continue to debate whether there is sufficient empirical evidence for basic emotions and other special-purpose emotion mechanisms. Some see the role of evolution as limited to the shaping of general-purpose adaptations, such as core affect and the ability to categorize, which jointly lead to the emergence of emotions.
SEVEN. Emotions are no longer considered structurally opposed to reason.
Researchers continue to debate the circumstances in which emotions manifest various kinds of cognitive and strategic irrationality.
EIGHT. Emotions can be appropriate or inappropriate with respect to their intentional objects.
Researchers debate the grounds of, and distinctions between, different forms of appropriateness (e.g., fittingness, moral appropriateness).
NINE. Emotions typically involve appraisals of the significance of the stimulus situation, ranging between primitive and sophisticated forms of information processing.
Researchers debate what the structure of appraisals is, and whether appraisals cause or constitute emotions or both.
TEN. Emotions typically correlate with changes in motivation to do things.
Some researchers think emotions cause or consist in such changes in motivation, whereas others think that changes in motivation have other causes, or are too unspecific to ground a theory of what emotions are.
The exploration of these insights and the resolution of the disagreements around them is a thriving interdisciplinary project in contemporary emotion theory.
Philosophers and affective scientists will continue to engage in it for years to come, putting their distinctive theoretical skills at the service of projects of common interest.

My friend and I were being taught advanced algebra concepts except in a very dumbed down, simplistic way so it would be easier to understand.
Except, my friend already understood all of it. He would say, "Oh, that's an integral of 0 to pi," and the teacher would say, "Well yes, but the answer I'm looking for is 'red'."
This Math class was interspersed with sessions on the Grimace Shower and Workout Machine, a Grimace-themed workout machine where you would hold yourself horizontal with your arms, play a shitty arcade game with your feet, and a tiny little spout would occasionally pour water onto your chest.

#4 - Sandwing chapter
Astute viewers may be tempted to point out that this rendering of Qibli is wearing his earring in the wrong ear. This is an intentional nod to the graphic novel depiction, which does something interesting with that entire thing. He starts wearing the earring in his right ear, but then it gets torn out during the fight with Icicle. In the next issue, that ear is scarred and he starts wearing it in his left ear instead. It's possible this also happens in the books, it's admittedly been a while since I read them front-to-back, so my memory on that is fuzzy. But I always thought that was a cool detail. And since Icicle is still present here, these pictures must have been... uh... "taken" before she absconded. Hence the earring in the right ear.
Also, with 20 out of 36 students done, this now puts us across the halfway mark.

WARP CORE DEEP DIVE!

Where it all began. So much so, that they never quite nailed down what anything in engineering was. We know the thing in the middle was a "matter/antimatter integrator" and it had a dilithium crystal in it. But it didn't appear until later on, the floor was originally empty. There were also large transformer-ish things that moved about as the plot demanded. The big thing behind the mesh? That's the pipe cathedral. Maybe it was an impulse engine (as per the old Star Trek Blueprints by Franz Joseph) or perhaps it was part of the warp drive. Originally the idea was that the warp nacelles generated their own power. But that would change soon...

The Animated Series gave us something very similar to the TOS engine room, with the pipe cathedral and one BIG transformer, but instead of the matter/antimatter integrator we got a glass tube with what looked like measurements on it. Maybe it's a proto-warp core a la TMP, especially since it's in a similar spot to Strange New Worlds'. Or maybe it's a coolant pipe like the 2009 movie. Who knows? We also saw inside the "antimatter nacelle" in one episode, which is generally assumed to mean inside one of the warp engines themselves but it's all a bit vague.

The Motion Picture gave us the original Big Blue Lava Lamp, the physical set was 3 stories high but augmented with forced-perspective, in the form of a painting at the bottom of the shaft and a truncated horizontal intermix chamber crewed by children at the end of the main level. The engineering crew on the main deck now wear radiation suits, adding to the idea this big blue thing isn't your friend.
This was also the Big Retcon, making the intermix chamber the power source for the warp nacelles. Every Trek regardless of era would follow this route.

In Wrath of Khan, they'd add a very important side room with dilithium crystals in for Spock to self-sacrifice in. I always found it very amusing this room, where the most important part of the engineering machinery was, was in no way physically connected to the intermix chamber. Nor did it exist in the previous movie.

The Next Generation gave us a pot-bellied stove, with neon segments glowing one-by-one up and down to give the impression of pulses of energy colliding in the middle then being fed to the nacelles. No more radiation suits needed, and the room has a nice carpet. This was also the first time "warp core" was used, a phrase that would retroactively be applied to all the prior ones.
The Enterprise-E and DS9's Defiant would have bigger and smaller warp cores that were variations on the same theme as TNG.

Voyager brought back the classic Motion Picture big blue lava lamp, just without the horizontal tube this time. It does the nifty swirly thing too. Q Junior makes it do club lighting one time.

NX-01 Enterprise is just kind of this big industrial tank with some glowy bits. It's weird that in the classic movies they needed radiation suits to work in engineering, but in the series set 100 years earlier they didn't.

The 2009 reboot filmed engineering in a thinly disguised Budweiser brewery, which made the area look enourmous and extremely complex, but lost all the high tech clean room vibes prior shows had. What in real life were giant brewing tanks housed the intermix chambers which made up the warp core, which were ejected through a hatch in the roof at the end. This look was extremely controversial with some, but personally I loved it.

In Into Darkness the warp core looks like an almighty piece of kit, and that's because they shot on location at the Lawrence Livermore National Ignition Facility. It's a real-life fusion reactor. And then you can climb inside it and it turns out that inside is one very important laser thing, some dilithium crystals you barely see and lots of deadly radiation. At least the self sacrificing happens inside the core itself and not a weird separate side chamber this time. The brewery from the last movie was still there, implying this was all along even if we didn't visit it. But that complicates things because the bits they called the warp core are very different. Perhaps the intermix chambers ejected last movie and core seen here are all part of the same huge warp core system.

Strange New Worlds reboots the original... sort of. They put a vertical intermix chamber in there and instead of a mesh and forced perspective they've got an AR wall with an enourmous array of high tech pipes. But weirdly, the writers guide says the big AR wall with the updated pipe cathedral is the deflector dish machinery not the warp core. I guess the confusion makes it more authentic TOS.

Mini-Review: Jet Lag: The Game
An American travel competition series, each season features a contest that sends players to achieve a geographical objective in different parts of the world, some of which are inspired by board games. Whether it's teams traveling to to US states to claim a Connect Four-style row or column, circumnavigating the globe via air travel, playing tag across western Europe, or driving the vertical length of New Zealand, players will race against each other and the reliability of transit to get the win.
Imagine: you are an adult, collapsing into a hotel bed after a long day of getting lost on the public transit of your vacation city. You're about to stream something funny and not difficult to follow—maybe Nailed It!, maybe Taskmaster—when your companion interjects, says they've been watching this really fun travel race show, and starts a playlist where a quartet of people in predawn darkness run away six seconds into the video, and suddenly you're watching people race to circumnavigate the world?
That was my introduction to Jet Lag: The Game.
Each season is a self-contained game, and they mix it up: the first season (which, for some reason, is the second playlist on YouTube) is a game of "Connect Four" across America, where teams must "claim" four states in a horizontal or vertical row by traveling to each one and completing challenges, while the second game is a race to circumnavigate the globe, and the third season is a game of tag across western Europe, primarily using train systems.
Sidequest-like challenges are an integral part of these games. In most of them, players must unlock coins or money (as in a video game) to have the in-game balance to buy tickets, or unlock information about opponents, etc., so the series is never a straight race. The challenges vary by season and location, but include things like:
Logic or trivia challenges
Go to a museum for half an hour and tell the camera 5 fun facts you learned
Eat a menu item at McDonald's you can't get in the US
Get 1000 feet from any building
Get a hole in one in mini golf
Find [animal] at [local attraction famous for animal]
Make cheese
Cursed! Listen to Tom Lehrer's "Element Song" on repeat until you reach the next city [over an hour away]
Cursed! Only take trains that leave at odd-numbered times
Acquire any food produced in your current state and mail it to your family
Explain the birds and the bees to a bird or a bee
Ride a horse
Get goosebumps while at least one goose is in the camera frame
Because the challenges are random (usually drawn from a shuffled deck of cards), it adds tension to the games: the player or team needs money/coins/points in order to travel, or thwart their competitors, and there's a real risk that they'll fail because it's physically impossible or there's not enough time to complete.
If you, like me, are wary of YouTubers™, worry not. The focus here is the game, and the players do a decent job trying not to bother other people: most faces of passers-by are blurred, players try to set up in out-of-the-way corners when filming, and when they need to interact with people, like at a customer service desk, the camera is usually pointed at the player. There's also a lot of being very polite to customer service, drivers, and others they interact with. You can see them get strange looks sometimes, but overall they do a good job of trying not to be Social Media Personalities™ disruptively.
And the players themselves also seem to be nice people to watch; they'll send "curses" or other interruptions when the game allows for it, but there's no out-of-game interpersonal unpleasantness that makes it into the show. Also, one player, Ben, consistently wears the brightest, most funky clothes. He has no camouflage in a crowd, but who cares.
Final comments: Highly recommend. It's fun, safe for most ages—swears stronger than "damn" get bleeped—and you can tell that a lot of planning and thought has gone into game development to balance things. If you like the idea of race-type reality shows combined with good attitudes and sportsmanship, you'll probably enjoy this.
Subtitle availability: English closed captions are available and very well-done, sometimes including different font colors to indicate different people in conversations, and some excellent phonetic spellings of mispronunciations! However, for the first two seasons (Connect 4 and Circumnavigation), only auto-generated captions on YT are available.
Where to watch (USA, as of December 2024): YouTube (playlists link [X]) and Nebula (which was partially founded by the game's creator)—which also has recap/discussion podcasts, and series outtake video tarting with season 8, and the service gets new episodes a week early.
Start watching with: The friend who introduced me started me with the first playlist that shows up on YouTube, Circumnavigation, so I feel like if it worked on me, it'll work on others. But if that doesn't appeal to you, starting with either the next playlist—Connect Four Across America (which is actually the first season) or the third season, Tag Eur It, would be good. I started my parents on Tag Eur It, a game of tag across multiple European countries, because I think it's got one of the strongest hooks of any early series, explains the rules very quickly, and the immediate urgency (runner must run; chasers start to follow soon after) draws you in very quickly.
But really, starting anywhere will work. However, because the creators sometimes reference outcomes from earlier games, especially when they are playing near the location of previous games, I recommend watching any similar-geography games in order (Tag 1 before Tag 2 or Hide and Seek, and New Zealand [Race to the End of the World] before Australia).
Status/Frequency: There are currently 11 complete seasons on Youtube (12 on Nebula), and so far new seasons premier roughly 3-ish times a year, with most seasons lasting 5-6 episodes, and episodes tend to be 30-45 minutes each. As of this review, there is no indication that this is likely to change anytime soon, and the 12th season premiers this month.

The Red Ibis and the Praying Mantis
Happy secret samol to @fr0ghole who requested Cas'alear x Zig'ell and some classic bl tropes :-) details under the cut!
If you are interested my commissions are open!
The most wonderful time of year is upon us once again. I had wayyy less time than I did the last two years, but I'm still very proud of what I could accomplish! Here's some rambling.
Some initial sketches! I still really like how their poses look together here! I ended up reworking it to bring a bit more of zigs knight-like characteristics into that scene, switching the double pistols for a sword and shield. I still think these poses could have worked, but changing it solved a lot of problems quickly (like better integrating the top left of the picture) so I don't regret it. I still like it, frames them like dispersing forces rather than a unit. Decisions decisions.
If I had more time I might have gone with their mechs all wrapped up in one another like there on the right as well, something about two dispersing forces only colliding again in the battlefield. I had a lot to work with!
I started with a vertical comp like my other secsam pieces and eventually settled on a horizontal one. I still really like the vertical ones with the big empty space on the lower right near the two tiny figures together, but I knew I'd have to solve a lot later on if I went that route and I did have a tight time limit.

Some details and mech drawings before poses were slightly changed!
Thank you for checking out my work :-)
If you are interested my commissions are open!
