Camp Cartoon Sign-ups Open April 15th!

Well, color me embarrassed.

We’re well into April and I’m only now getting this little note out to everybody! I’d planned to post this at the tippity-top of the month but somebody^ started a rewatch of Animaniacs and I lost a week there.) But enough about that—Very Serious Sr. Picani mode activate!

Camp Cartoon is just three weeks away!

The Camp Counselors (mods) and I just couldn’t be more excited! Camper (writer) sign-up forms will be posted right here in this Bat Channel on April 15th.

Forms close on April 29th. We’ll also open up the Discord server on the 15th—campers can use the link at the end of the sign-up form.

We'll announce who’s in which cabin (teams) on the 30th right there on Discord and we can all get to writing those bunk notes on the 1st of May. Each camper (and counselor) will have exactamente 1 month to finish as many stories as their hearts desire (and their typing fingers allow!)

Every story a camper writes earns their cabins points. Cabins will also get super-dee-duper bonus points for finishing all the prompts of another cabin, so teamwork makes the dream work here!

So what kind of stories will Campers write? Will there be a prompt list like what @tsspromptmonth does sometimes?

That's such a good question Anon!

Our campers will be submitting two prompts when they sign up, the first one will be simple, like their favorite ship or an AU they really like to read about, the second prompt will be a bit more detailed, on the sign up form it's phrased as "a more complex or specific prompt you may have in mind" and our camp counselors have provided examples, something like

"Logan, who is a god, loses his powers, either willingly or unwillingly, and thinks he's alone until someone finds him and helps him."

or

"Intrulogical on a pirate ship under attack"

Campers will get to see all of these prompts and choose which ones they want to write. You'll have lots of options but ultimately the prompt list is up to your fellow campers!

Hey the Canadian Federal Election is coming up, and I get the sense a lot of people in Canada don't... Actually know how our elections work? Our system is not the same as America's system - we're actually different forms of democracy, for one thing.

In Canada, the leader of the party with the most seats in the House of Commons (that is to say, the seats Canadians are actually voting for in the election) becomes the Prime Minister. Sometimes this means the government is held by a minority in the House, less than 50%. That means they need to make allies and deals with other parties to get much of anything done.

The party with the next most seats is the Opposition, with their leader being Leader of the Opposition.

There are 338 seats in the House of Commons, for each of the 338 federal ridings in Canada. In each of these ridings, the person with the highest number of votes wins the seat associated with it. That means that in one riding the Liberal candidate can get 75% of votes, and in another they can get 40% of votes, but if that's more than all the others, they still get both seats.

Unlike in the case of America's president, we don't vote individually for our Prime Minister; the party chooses who they want to be their leader, and if that party wins the most seats, their leader becomes Prime Minister. Though, they do need to win their riding, or they'll need to call a snap reelection in some other person's riding (causing that person to drop out of parliament) and win there. This has happened a few times.

Almost all people who run for Parliament belong to a party. I suppose if Parliament somehow became majority Independent - and they stayed Independent - the biggest party would still end up in charge but they'd have to court the heck out of all the Independents to get anything done.

Anyway, voting strategically doesn't work the same way for us! Check your riding to see what the projections are, because maybe it fully does not matter if you vote, say, Liberal, when you want to go NDP, if in your riding the Liberal party is projected to tank anyway. 338canada is a good resource for checking that.
