Matilda: It’s been a while…
Tristen: Yeah, it feels like forever-.. uh, what brings you here?
Matilda: We’re taking a forced vacation. I’m sure you can figure out who did the forcing.
Tristen: Ah…
Matilda: Yeah.
Tristen: I kinda figured you were mad at me.
Matilda: Little bit.
Tristen: I should’ve said goodbye or written sooner, I guess.
Matilda: Little bit-.. but you were sorting your shit out, right? I get it.
[Tristen smiled contritely, avoiding Matilda’s gaze-.. out of sheer embarrassment or a severe lack of brain functionality, he wasn’t sure]
Tristen: Is that Pixie?
Matilda: Yeah-.. bit bigger now, huh?
Tristen: Aha, little bit.
Matilda: Anyway, you’re clearly working, so…
Tristen: Shit, yeah-.. I’ve got another job to get to after this but uh, you gonna be around tomorrow?
Matilda: Yeah, we pretty much just got here.
Tristen: Okay, uh.. meet me outside the pharmacy at ten? There’s only one in town n’ it’s on like every map-.. I don’t have my phone with me, so…
Matilda: Yeah, sure.
Tristen: Okay-.. uh, yeah.. okay!
Matilda: Bye, Triss.
Tristen: Bye-.. see you tomorrow?
Matilda: Yep.
Tristen: Ten o’clock?
Matilda: Uh-huh.
Tristen: Okay.

ok but the fact that "aziraphale is softening. they haven't spoken in a hundred years: he's realizing they're still friends" and "there's no need to thank me that's what...friends...are for" was in the same night is making me go INSANE
shogun (book) does the 'characters speaking in multiple languages' thing the best ive ever seen its so fuckign. the 'defaults' are typically either portugese or japanese and so those are written normally, with the exception that the japanese we hear from blackthornes perspective is either unintelligible (not direct quotes) or short words and phrases that he picks up (things like wakarimasuka and kinjuru are written just like that, and we the english reader learn what they mean as blackthorne does, so dont need translations evey time). japanese when heard from a japanese character's perspective is written in normal english, because its still the default, its their first, usually only, language. but it gets funky when youre speaking, say, latin, which they do sometimes. because blackthorne knows it fluently, but its not his first language (though neither is portugese) and its not the one he uses the most. so its written recognizably to us, an english-speaking reader, but in a way that makes it clear it is NOT portugese (default). so its written in this kind of old-englishy very elaborate style, with thees and thous and -ith at the ends of verbs and even just a different grammatical structure than normal english. "who giveth the sign? with importance it should be given quickly." <- not a sentence that comes naturally to english but it is A: recognizable as of the meaning and B: clearly Different. it signals theyre speaking latin even when the whole book is written in English and i think its NEAT

keep thinking abt hoshina and mina GOD.. (spoilers for manga and kn8 bside)
given what hoshina said about his previous division treating him like a burden/parasite just because he can’t handle firearms and specializes in his swords… how tiring must it have been to have to work with those people each mission despite having a common goal?
and how tiring must it have been to be constantly told off by his own father for wanting to continue his family’s tradition, or to be told to give up on being part of the jakdf by his own teacher -
before mina, a high ranking commander personally reached out to him, to recruit him into her team?
the fact that she didn’t see him during joint trainings and think: why bother with that? why bother with blades when bigger kaiju will appear? when she personally deals with bigger kaiju herself.
but she instead saw him and thought: he can help me, he can cover my weaknesses (mina not being able to handle a vegetable peeler is hilarious) and he’s someone i can trust
she sees potential in him, she sees how he can excel within her division, she saw hoshina and as captain - has probably heard everyone talk shit about him but she was still certain that he’d be one of her division’s greatest asset
(and even when platoon leader ebina refused to let hoshina help out, mina stood firm on her decision and her claim that hoshina would be useful. when she asked him if he could take down the big kaiju, and he could only promise saving the child within it - she believed him, took his word for it and waited until he carried out his promise.)
and now hoshina is the vice captain, putting faith in a new recruit whom most people wouldn’t have believed in… full fucking cycle..
tldr: it makes me rly fucking emotional to think about how hoshina was given a reason to continue improving with his swords after being told to give up all this time… and how mina had never once thought his abilities were useless 👍
also makes me crazy how protective he is of his position as vice captain, as the person who stands by captain ashiro’s side…
Thinking about how my understanding of Treech and Lamina's dynamic can be summed up by Paul, Big Thief.
“See, you're gentle, baby.” (Treech about Lamina during the Games, that even when violence was needed, she refused to stoop to his level. Lamina's rose tinted view of Treech before the Games. When even though his words could so often be cutting, be cruel, his touch was nothing but soft.)
“I couldn't stay, I'd only bring you pain” (Treech knowing if he stayed with Lamina they'd have to watch each other die, or he'd only betray her at a later time in the Games. That his love would never be enough to overpower his want to go home.)
“I was your starry-eyed lover and the one that you saw.” (Lamina about her and Treech before the Games. Her having her head in the clouds, often being referred to as 'starry-eyed' in a negative way. Lamina being overlooked constantly, easy to miss, yet Treech managed to see her.)
“I was your hurricane rider and the woman you'd call.” (Treech about his own dynamic with Lamina. He was wild, different to what she was used to. He chased thrills, pickpocketing, breaking curfews. But, he was still the person Lamina trusted, the person Lamina called on when she needed a shoulder to cry on.)
“We were just two moonshiners on the cusp of a breath.” (They weren't special. There were hundreds of friends who bordered on romantic due to their dependency on one another. A doomed match of people drawn together due to the solace they found in their differences. Yet, they barely left an impact on the world. They were truly gone in a cusp of breath.)
“And I've been burning for you baby since the minute I left.” (Self explanatory, Treech yearned for the comfort she brought him after leaving. However it was killing him. It was a burn, not a warmth, but deadly flame inside of his gut. Leaving her left him a dead man on his feet, his heart still beating, but staying with her would made him feel alive as his blood poured from a wound.)
No matter the actions they both took, they could never have been anything but doomed.
