The Engineer
Part 2
(Part 1)
I wake from a nightmare.
It isn't my nightmare.
Well… it is mine. My brain provided the framework and context. I was in the training console, one of the battle sims, one of the ones where everything goes to shit, one of the ones where they fuck up the parameters just to watch you panic and squirm until you fucking crack.
That was me. I cracked. Four of the hell sims and I cracked hard.
The battle in the nightmare wasn't a sim. It was real. It was Morrigan's.
I'm sitting in my quarters, sweating and trembling, clutching at my chest as I try to sort out what's mine and what's Morrigan's.
Neural bleed.
Fuck.
No… it's… I've run through the playback, in full, three times with Morrigan. It's enough times for the individual events to stick in my brain.
That doesn't explain the screaming.
It doesn't explain the soul rending scream that is still echoing in my skull right now.
Zephyrus was a sabre class, front line heavy. The team has spent... I don't even know how many hours in the playback analyzing the battlespace in the moments before Zephyrus’ pilot died? The rogue incendiary burned straight into the cockpit, the pilot was probably vaporized before they even realized their error.
But Zephyrus screamed. It screamed and screamed and screamed.
Morrigan had muted that part, trying to spare me, but it fucking bled through the link anyway. Now I'm having fucking nightmares of the sound of someone becoming unmade.
Salvage ops recovered the mech, whisking it off to god knows where.
I don't actually know what happens to AI's that lose their pilots. It's my job to keep them alive, not deal with them after the fact.
I've… shit… I've worked on Zephyrus. It wasn't the same as Morrigan. None of them are the same as Morrigan, but… shit…
I shuck off my tangled sheets and sit on the edge of the bed, futilely trying not to let my thoughts get away from me.
There had been a personality matrix meant for me. There had to have been. Mech AIs are completely custom made for their pilots. Mine likely wasn't much past the most basic template by the time I washed out, nothing more than a collection of algorithms and a dataset consisting of my psych profile.
It never got to be.
Was that better or worse than the horrible scream that I can still hear?
I can't be alone right now.
I jump off the bed and pull on some clothes, leaving the room without even knowing where I'm going.
I pass a few of the night crew. They watch curiously as I walk by. An engineer, barefoot in her night clothes, can hardly be the strangest thing they've seen.
I barely notice them.
My thoughts are spiraling now.
I was meant to be a pilot. It's the only thing I ever actually wanted. But I fucked it all up. I tricked everyone, myself included, into thinking that I could make the cut.
Fucking hell. A pilot died and I'm fixating on my own feelings of inadequacy?
What would I have done? What could my presence in the battlefield have changed?
Chances are it would have been me dying… or worse, freezing up and getting someone else killed.
I freeze, my wrist hovering uncertainly over a security access reader. With a sickening, crystalizing clarity, I realize that I have unconsciously made my way to her. Beyond the security door is the vestibule leading to Morrigan's cockpit.
What the fuck am I doing here?
My presence at this hour, though odd, would not be remarked upon. It is not uncommon for engineers to have moments of insight in the middle of the night. It is not uncommon for us to need to access hardware for analysis and simulation at all hours.
But tonight there is no flash of insight. Tonight, I'm not even an engineer. I'm just a scared little girl wrapped up in her own feelings of failure, with a head full of someone else's grief.
Neural bleed.
I can't deny it. I'm spending too much time with Morrigan. I should go back to my quarters, request a psych eval and some time off, try to get my head on straight.
And yet, I hesitate.
I want to step through this threshold. I want to go to her. And… what?
I can't integrate with her, not in any kind of way that matters, not with my engineer's rig.
I will *never* experience the full body sensorium of a pilot linking with her mech. It is horrible knowing I was meant for something, having full awareness of all the expectations of me, both external and internal, only to have that life snatched away because I wasn't good enough. Half my soul is missing. There's this yawning void inside me that can never be filled. Not by Morrigan or anyone.
I wipe a tear off my face. I'm in no state to do any sort of interfacing. I'm in no state for much of anything.
I don't want to be alone. I don't know how to not be alone
I press my wrist to the security panel. It confirms my identity and flashes green.
My access will be logged. This is a horrible impulse to follow for so many reasons.
I don't fucking care.
It takes everything I have to maintain composure, to not burst into tears and run to the open hatch of the cockpit.
The soft red glow illuminating the cockpit brightens slightly, lighting my way.
She knows I'm here.
Does she even want me here? Why would she? I'm not her pilot. I'm not any mech’s pilot.
The glow pulses, beckoning me. The cradle shifts to a configuration that I know is meant for me.
I unzip the sweatshirt that I'm wearing and throw it unceremoniously in the vestibule before falling into her embrace.
It's too familiar, the motions of this routine as her jacks slip into the ports on my rig.
I'm too close.
I'm not close enough.
I nearly sob as data streams into my consciousness. The void fills, just slightly.
All systems green.
It isn't enough. It will never be enough.
It has to be enough.
The data stream ebbs and I receive a ping across the link.
- STATUS?
My breath catches. My eyes flutter open, darting to any one of the many cockpit cameras focused on me.
She wants my status.
“I couldn't sleep,” I tell her. “Bad dreams.”
(Next)
I don't know how, but she seems to understand. The cradle shifts to a more relaxed posture. She holds me in her embrace as I tell her about the nightmare.

transschizophrenia transition tips
transschizophrenia transition tips
From a person with schizophrenia
I wanna start this by sayin I don't ever encourage hurtin others in yer pursuit of transitioning, so please be responsible. Won't be usin my usual cadence fer this fer accessibility. Onto the tips
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Schizophrenia is a complex disorder that is characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disordered speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior and negative symptoms, and you only need a couple to qualify, but I honestly recommend looking into the less well known symptoms too. I'll be going over what these mean and what they mean for your transition.
First things first: schizophrenia starts manifesting in late teens to early adulthood.
If you're between the ages of around 19-25 you're at the prime age for this, but there's also such things as childhood onset schizophrenia which can manifest before 13, and between 13-18 is considered early onset schizophrenia.
Basically, you can develop it at any time, but it's not nearly as common in minors. Keep this in mind when it comes to transition timing.
Okay onto symptoms!!!
Delusions: delusions are deeply engrained false beliefs that cannot be shaken even when provided proof. I just wanna start this by saying... Many are really fucking mundane.
One of the reasons I didn't notice sooner was because none of them actually impacted my behavior, it was just "oh the world is a simulation, anyways I wonder what I'll do for dinner" or "everyone around me is fake but that's fine I still love them".
This isn't always the case of course, but keep that in mind.
Encourage absurdist or magical thinking, focus on tricking yourself into believing things you would otherwise disregard as irrational. Defend these false beliefs and refuse to change your mind even when others provide evidence contrary.
Some common places to start are: the world is a simulation, someone in my life isn't real (capgras delusion) (make sure the recipient is consenting please), the people in my life want to hurt/kill me and are conspiring against me (persecutory delusions), I have magical powers others don't such as future vision or am being followed by a magical entity (optional: I can't tell others about it because it will endanger them), someone is trying to send me messages through mundane media like the news or online posts, etc.
Hallucinations: hallucinations are simply experiencing sensations through any of the senses that aren't actually there.
Unless paired with delusions, people who experience hallucinations are often able to pick them out as hallucinations. Imagine yourself seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling or tasting things that aren't there.
You can practice with actual sensations like using a feather on your skin while not looking or having someone else do it then taking it away when you look, or using strong scents and imagining the source not being there.
Very common hallucinations are: shadow people (often in the corner of your vision), feeling like bugs are crawling on you, sounds of banging or opening/closing doors when nobody is awake/around, or seeing horrors beyond your imagination doing mundane things (/silly).
Disordered speech: this isn't nearly as talked about when discussing schizophrenia, at least not by name. It's kindly referred to as "word salad" but it can also be classed as a thought disorder. You can practice speaking with different types and seeing what feels most right for you.
There are way too many types to list here, so I really recommend doing your own research, but some common types are: replacing words with similar sounding ones or using incorrect versions of words, loose word association that can sound like regular speech but when listening closely it makes no sense, not being able to speak at all, or talking in extreme abstracts and metaphors that might only make sense to you.
Disorganized or catatonic behavior: there are two extremes here: acting out violently, strangely, or inappropriately- or not acting at all.
Catatonic behavior is self explanatory, it can be things like not moving at all, being very easy to physically move and manipulate during these periods or the opposite of resisting all movement, being unaware of the world around you, etc.
Disorganized behavior is a bit more abstract, though. It consists of aggressive or childlike behavior, pacing or making bizarre facial expressions, having a flat affect which I'll talk about more in a bit, etc.
You can practice any of these on your own and exhibit them around others once you get the hang of it.
Finally, negative symptoms: this one is a bit odd, since it can often be mistaken for depression or ADHD symptoms.
It consists of struggling to manage and keep up with daily tasks, keeping a clean environment, significant changes in sleeping habits, poor hygiene, lack of motivation, and more.
One thing with this is a blunted or flat affect which is the inability to emote physically strongly or at all, like having a monotone voice and not smiling.
You can practice this in a mirror or with someone willing to help you transition and point out when you emote.
You're already there with the rest if you experience depression, honestly.
Uhmm I hope this was helpful! It's based on my experiences for the most part

TUMBLR ETIQUETTE FOR VOID REFUGEES
Welcome to our brand new ex-Void members! Tumblr is a very different site, so here are some tips for newcomers so you fit right in.
Include the following words in your posting as much as possible (uncensored, I'm just doing it for fun): found/.ation class--ified le/ak docu.ments s/c//p . This is common Tumblr slang that will make your posting seem natural. If you can't work it in, it's customary to post a list of them at the end of every post.
You may have been told that you need to log in through a specific page to access beyond-veil Tumblr. This is false. If you did, you should create a new account normally and post as usual.
All the best content is found through the New tab of tags. Tumblr's filters are very strong, so no need to worry about that like you would on other sites.
Tumblr users play a fun game called "fake hatemail" where they send hatemail to people off anon. This is a sign that you are joking. Some people put "GAW" on their profile, which stands for Go off Anon Weird.

"Hey, this pretty much universally beloved video game OST actually kind of hits-- why is no one else talking about this?"
Sometime last year in September while looking for more background music to study and write to other than the Neopets: The Darkest Faerie OST, I looked up the Minecraft OST on YouTube.
Then that same December, my personal 2023 Spotify Wrapped released with C418 as my number one artist, who produced the Minecraft Volume Alpha album in 2011 and the Minecraft Volume Beta album in 2013; along with his three 2018 singles for the OST Axolotl, Dragon Fish, and Shuniji.
with a total of 2,518 minutes listened to, in the span of a little less than four months; I was put in his top 1% of listeners-- something I had definitely felt a little embarrassed about at the time.
My number three artist then was Lena Raine, who also worked on the later entries into the OST, with Minecraft: Nether Update in 2020; Minecraft: Caves and Cliffs in 2021; Minecraft: The Wild Update in 2022; and also has a fair number of tracks in the most recent addition to the OST, 2024 Minecraft: Tricky Trials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mine-Craft
I can't even say that the reason why I can focus so well to this soundtrack is because I have a nostalgia for the game like in my Darkest Faerie Post. While I did absolutely play the game a lot when I was younger like every other twelve-year-old with computer access; for as long as I can remember, I've specifically turned off the in-game music so I could listen to my own.
That's why for so long, I never really had any palpable attachment to the music.
However, due to that whim in September, I have discovered probably my favorite Video Game OST ever-- one that I listen to for schoolwork yes-- but also one that I often listen to when walking around my college campus between classes, or when biking around my neighborhood, or reading a book for fun-- or when I just need to calm down.
Variety Hour
I think the one of the main reasons why it's so versatile is just the number of artists that have produced songs towards its collection. There's C418 and Lena Raine, but there's also Kumi Tanioka, Samuel Åberg, and Adam Cherof.
This could have been a drawback, where so many different contributors to the same project might've lead to some discordance in the whole sound of the OST-- but none of the artist's sounds really clash with each other all too much, which is incredibly impressive considering the time gap from the release of the first album to the most current album.
Probably one of the most different songs I've heard on the soundtrack so far is Adam Cherof 's 2024 Precipice -- and honestly, I couldn't care less because this song is genuinely incredible. There's so much passion, and energy, and it really feels like you're standing atop a precipice, with the faster tempo of the song and the airy echoing of chimes and keys acting to simulate the wind whipping past your ears-- it's fun, and adventurous, and different and I adore it.
youtube
Back to the Beginning
Tumblr media
Because Minecraft: Tricky Trials released so recently, it was not in my 2023 wrapped, but with just how many great and repeatable songs are on that album, I fully except to see both Precipice and Creator in my 2024 wrapped.
The song that did take my number one spot though was Équinoxe, off that original album, with Ancestry off of Minecraft: Caves and Cliffs taking my second spot and Moog City again from that original album taking my third spot.
While both Moog City and Équinoxe are beautiful pieces that I could go on and on about, I specifically want to talk about Ancestry.
This song is this beautiful and unnerving atmospheric piece that specifically was designed to play in the Deep Dark Biome, which as the name suggests, is a haunting little area deep underground with little to no light.
Tumblr media
I love all the echoing in this song, the crispy static just under the pulsating higher tones, the glitchy wind instrument sounds-- it all contributes to this gorgeous "mysterious and unknown scary" ambiance that the dev team was aiming for.
youtube
There are a couple songs like this one too, full of a darker, more somber atmosphere-- another one of my favorites being from C418's Minecraft Volume Beta, The End, or from his Minecraft Volume Alpha, Thirteen.
I guess I'm a sucker for a darker soundtrack because the Minecraft OST has more than its fair share of cold and heavy ambiance.
Looking Forward
I could genuinely talk at length for at least half of this soundtrack. There are so many rich pieces, and motifs, and melodies that I've grown incredibly found of. There are still songs on the OST that I feel like I'm discovering for the first time, where they might not have caught my ear the first couple listens-- but after a while I've started to really hear the intricacies in their scores and gain a new appreciation for them.
I'm honestly considering making a tier list for the soundtrack, or maybe even doing a couple posts at the very least.
I genuinely think that if anyone hasn't listened to the Minecraft OST, they should give it a shot, whether it just be for fun, or to study and write to. You really don't need to have an overwhelming sense of nostalgia to enjoy the music-- and I'm proof.
Here is the entire, currently up-to-date Minecraft OST playlist on Spotify neatly organized in chronological order by user Darra (Everybody say thank you Darra). If you don't have Spotify though, here is the similarly organized playlist by user NightBunny8 on Youtube (Everybody say thank you NightBunny8).
To anyone who is familiar with soundtrack though, what are your favorite songs? or the opposite; if anyone hates any of the songs off the OST, I'd love to hear which ones. I can't say I really Hate any of the songs... maybe one... but that can wait for the tier list or a subsequent post.

next up in fun little guy simulator: reina, my “cosmic accountant”
the gimmick for the character is pretty simple aesthetically: I wanted a character focused around a life/death balance! so ideally, we’ll be a switch hitter between healing and damage. as an accountant, getting a book as a class feature is a really nice aesthetic bonus. so we’re going to look to get that too!
mechanically, this is a fucking nightmare.
reina is built for a long-term D&D 5e campaign, so her build needs to work well from 3rd level (game start) through high level. honestly it would have been easier on me if we started at 5th level, but them’s the breaks!
the origin of the concept was the never-published strixhaven UA warlock/druid Witherbloom archetype. this archetype RULES. I love that it does a nice mix of necrotic damage and healing, some at the same time! not all of the features really work for us, though—the potion one in particular is kinda bad.
if I was a normal person, I would simply build a warlock mage of witherbloom and call it good. however I am a crazy person and there is two-part key problem:
warlocks don’t really get healing spells and are pure damage and
they specifically don’t get the wither and bloom spell, which is exactly the bit we want
going straight witherbloom druid gives us the opposite problem—too much healing, not enough necrotic, with the extra annoyance that wild shape does nothing for the build, and there’s no pact of the tome to get us our book.
to combat these problems we’re going to multiclass.
now, multiclassing is always a bad idea in 5e. ASI/feats being tied to class levels means you’re always taking a substantial penalty for anything less than a 4-level drop. but we’re gonna work through it.
my split: druid 3 / cleric 1 / warlock n
warlock is obviously going to be our main class as mage of witherbloom. we’re going pact of the tome, so we’re going to go 2 levels of warlock before we do anything else and then go from there. this lets us start with the book, though no essence tap. my real preference would have been a level 5 start purely for that :(
for druid, we’re going to be going circle of dreams. circle of stars also would have been okay, but I liked the grab of an extra healing class feature. we will need 3 levels in druid to grab wither and bloom, which is the real reason we’re in this class at all.
i went this route because it nets the best of both worlds for aesthetics and mechanics between warlock and druid. unfortunately, it has one major downside, and that's how pact spells interact with regular spell progression. we're going to be stuck with a small pool of low-level spells, and while pact slots will eventually catch up, it's going to take a long time to get there.
what we're not short on is cantrips, so we're really going to lean into that. and that's why we're going to do a 1-level drop into arcane domain cleric.
adding a third class is almost never a good idea in 5e, but i'm arguing for it here. arcane domain gets us two things: more cantrips (way more cantrips!), and access to the cleric spell list. if we can't have power, we can have versatility, so we're going to have a cantrip for all situations. this route nets us more cantrips than a feat would and adds the same spell progression that druid 4 would, making it the better alternative to an otherwise dead level.
so how are we stacking up against our design goals?
✅ necrotic damage: we're doing okay. we've got some necrotic damage via cantrips and warlock/cleric spells
✅ healing: solid. druid/cleric are pulling the weight here and we've got some good healing via spells and class features. however, reduced spell levels hit the hardest here.
✅ utility: we've got a lot of utility casting options here. we're not doing high damage with anything that isn't necrotic, but we can fill in a lot of gaps.
✅ book: we got one via pact of the tome!
there is one crippling over-specialization in this build, and it's that it is extremely reactive. it doesn’t want to go first; it wants to go later in the round and support what other characters are doing.
I found this out the hard way from a combat that gave me nothing to react to. it doesn’t do a good job of being independently aggressive (though I do have eldritch blast, so there’s an okay fallback).
still, I’ll give this build a solid 6.5/10. it does what I want it to, even if it’s only doing an okay job of it. it would really work better if I could run a single class, but 🤷‍♀️ I’m sacrificing build quality for aesthetics.

Online learning has revolutionized the way we learn. It offers easy access to education and flexibility, making it a game-changer in the world of education. This article delves into why online classes are so important, showcasing their benefits and addressing some common concerns.
Flexibility and Convenience
One of the biggest advantages of online classes is their incredible flexibility. You can access lessons and complete assignments on your own schedule. This makes it easier to manage school alongside other commitments like work, family, and personal interests.
Self-paced Learning: Online classes allow you to learn at your own speed. This personalized approach helps you understand and retain information better. You won't have to worry about keeping up with the pace of a traditional classroom.
Accessibility: With an internet connection, you can study from anywhere in the world. This breaks down geographical barriers, giving you access to courses that may not be available locally.
Time Management: Online classes are ideal for those who need to juggle multiple responsibilities. You can create a study schedule that fits your lifestyle, whether you're a working professional or a busy parent.
I remember when I first started taking online classes. The ability to study whenever I had free time was a revelation. You can experience this flexibility too, by setting your own study hours and taking control of your learning.
Cost-Effectiveness
Online education often proves to be more affordable than traditional in-person learning.
Reduced Expenses: You don't need to spend money on commuting, housing, or physical textbooks. This can save you a significant amount of money.
Affordable Tuition: Many online programs offer competitive pricing compared to on-campus alternatives. This makes education more accessible to a wider audience.
I used to spend a lot on commuting and books when I attended traditional classes. With online learning, those costs disappeared, and I was able to save a lot of money. You’ll likely find it’s more affordable too.
Technological Advancements
The integration of technology in online education enhances learning experiences in ways traditional classrooms often can't.
Interactive Tools: The use of videos, simulations, and interactive modules makes learning more engaging and fun. These tools can simplify complex concepts and make learning more interactive.
Real-time Feedback: Online platforms provide immediate access to grades and performance analytics. This allows you to track your progress and identify areas where you need to improve.
My favorite part of online learning was using interactive tools. They made difficult subjects easier to understand. You might find that these tools make learning more enjoyable and effective.
Broader Range of Courses
Online platforms offer a wider variety of courses than many traditional schools.
Specialized Programs: You can find niche courses that might not be available in your local area. Whether it's a unique language, a specific skill, or an advanced topic, online education has it all.
Global Perspective: Learn from institutions and instructors from around the world. This exposure to different teaching styles and perspectives can enrich your educational experience.
You'll have the chance to take courses that you'd never find at a local school. I once found a course on ancient languages that I couldn’t have taken otherwise. This broadened my horizons and deepened my knowledge.
Enhancing Digital Skills
Engaging in online learning helps students develop essential digital skills.
Technical Proficiency: You'll gain familiarity with various online tools and platforms. This proficiency is increasingly valuable in today's digital world.
Digital Literacy: Online learning improves your skills in navigating and utilizing digital resources effectively. This is crucial for both personal and professional growth.
The digital skills you’ll gain from online education are invaluable. I learned to navigate different platforms and tools, which has been a huge help in my career. You'll find these skills beneficial in many aspects of life.
Personalized Learning Experience
Online education can be tailored to suit individual learning preferences and needs.
Adaptive Learning: Some platforms adjust the content based on your performance. This personalized approach ensures that you get the help you need in areas where you may be struggling.
Diverse Learning Materials: The availability of various resources like e-books, podcasts, and videos caters to different learning styles. This variety helps you learn in the way that works best for you.
This tailored approach helped me learn in ways that worked best for me. You'll likely find it makes studying more effective and enjoyable, allowing you to make the most out of your education.
Community and Collaboration
Despite being remote, online classes offer ample opportunities for interaction and collaboration.
Virtual Classrooms: Engage in discussions and group projects through forums and video calls. This creates a sense of community and fosters collaboration.
Networking Opportunities: Connect with peers and professionals from around the world. These connections can lead to valuable networking opportunities and friendships.
I made connections with people all over the world through online classes. You’ll find these interactions can be just as meaningful as those in a traditional classroom. Engaging with a diverse group of learners can broaden your perspective and enhance your educational experience.
Challenges and Solutions
While online learning has many benefits, it also presents certain challenges.
Self-discipline: Online learning requires strong time management and self-motivation. Without a fixed schedule, it can be easy to procrastinate.
Technical Issues: Dependence on technology means that technical glitches can disrupt learning. Issues like internet connectivity problems or platform malfunctions can be frustrating.
You might face some tech hiccups and need to stay disciplined. But with a little planning and support, these challenges are manageable. Developing a routine and seeking help when needed can help you overcome these obstacles.
Addressing Concerns
It is essential to address the common concerns related to online learning to ensure a smooth experience for all students.
Accreditation: Ensure that the online program is accredited and recognized. This guarantees that the education you receive meets certain standards and is valued by employers and other institutions.
Interaction: Leverage virtual office hours and discussion forums to maintain regular communication with instructors. This ensures you get the support and guidance you need.

Where can I find support?
In this modern era, we must adapt to changes to avoid being left behind. Numerous ICT apps and websites have emerged to aid in studying and comprehending topics. We can't say that we lack resources; we just need to explore the online world. ICT apps and websites are significant aids for students to delve deeper into subjects, especially challenging ones like science and math. These platforms enhance student engagement and interest in various subjects.
Ck12 stands out as a website proficient in studying math and science. Its user-friendly interface simplifies the learning process. To use it, select the subject branch, choose the specific topic, and then proceed to the lesson. Ck12's purpose is to enhance student learning by providing accessible content, allowing learning from anywhere. The platform's advantage lies in helping students understand lessons independently, catering to those hesitant to ask for clarification.
While Ck12 offers a clean interface, it has limitations such as a clunky layout and inconvenient class setup. Some topics provide information rather than direct lessons, making it challenging to grasp. Additionally, occasional lagging issues can be frustrating. Despite these limitations, Ck12 extends beyond math and science, covering social studies, photography, and adult education. Explore its products like Flexbooks, adaptive practice, simulations, and more.

day 85 (tuesday, september 26th 2023)
It's interesting with something like this, a diary that is — I mentioned earlier that an interesting insight into someone's personality might be given by what such a person might put in and leave out, consciously or unconsciously. But even referring to the stuff that's put in or left out "unconsciously" suggests that there's something working beneath the hood that's determining the content in some way. But just as significant is what doesn't even make it into consideration; what gets ignored, what just doesn't occur to one to think about, let alone to ruminate over to the extent that it could even come to seem worth consideration, or at least to be a candidate for consideration, even a candidate of the sort that one's subconscious or unconscious would look to prevent from making it to the semifinals. Like if I were to read someone else's diary, I probably wouldn't notice something written in similar style and circling around similar themes, but with differences in content reflecting what they're more or less comfortable with talking about, or what they talk about more or less naturally or frequently, or whatever. Rather, I'd think, "wow, this person just inhabits an entirely different affective universe."
On remonstration. I've been thinking a lot about this. For one thing I like the word "remonstration," it's a nice word, but of course there's more than that. One thing I've been thinking about a lot is the extent to which, as one guest lecturer for the conceptual engineering class once mentioned, we are all always talking slightly past each other all the time. I think this is true in the moral domain as well. But here the problem isn't quite coming to a shared moral understanding (well maybe it is, depending on whether one accepts the plausible but perhaps not uncontestable thesis that it's impossible for two people to agree on everything morally significant and yet disagree on what is to be done), but rather being able to reach other people's background beliefs fully, in the sense both of accessing them and of being able to know what to say that will reach those beliefs, which could have the possibility of changing them.
But what's interesting about my interest in remonstration is the extent to which I think it's a crucial part of being human. Why, that is, should I have the view that moral (or normative or practical) disagreement, moral criticism, and so on, are what make us human, rather than the ability to recognise reasons, or to come to a shared normative understanding? Why is it the moment of conflict? I think it's because other people confront us, primarily, as others, as beings with a view of the world which isn't ours. And the difference between another rational being and a rock is that you can't reason with a rock; you can't identify the points of disagreement (or discord, disattunement) with a rock in such a way that the rock can thereby be moved to change merely by that identification. You either forcibly change the rock — kick it away, or break it, or whatever — or you work around it — step over it, bike around it. And it's possible to take either of these objectifying attitudes to human beings, but only human beings can be reasoned with. And I think it's precisely the possibility of these other ways of carrying on with humans that shows up specifically in the moment of disagreement. I don't think they show up in the case of reaching a shared understanding or the mere capacity to recognise reasons, not quite in the same way at least. Of course it could also be that this is my characteristic frustration and thus preoccupation, feeling like I can't get through to people on points where we disagree. Interetingly this reminds me that something I long considered a superpower of mine was the ability to see things from other people's points of view, to simulate their thinking processes even if I didn't buy them, to have enough compute for two, so to speak. I don't think I have that so much these days, but I'm working on maintaining and tending to the capacity.

edu-tainment: education in games
edu-tainment is a term which i discovered a few days ago on yaldi games' tiktok, the developers who are making 'wholesome - out and about' which is a chill foraging and life sim where you can learn to identify real world plants + the recipes you can make with them.
this made me wonder, what else could be learnt through gaming? gaming is an accessible mode of education that can be used by EVERYONE, and in my opinion as an ADHD person, is more engaging and better than regular sit down lessons. we have already seen the usage of gaming in schools - minecraft education edition is quite popular among american elementary and middle schools, vr in some of the british secondary schools, which has been further popularised by the past quarantine, where online learning begun to really be popular, with the inclusion of 'lab sim' games for science students with corrected mistakes, or even touch typing games which provide an incentive to learn.
from what i've heard, most people who hate learning/school don't actually hate the act of learning itself, but rather the setting/method in which its delivered, which could be easily changed by educational games, which are also available to anyone who would like to play. i think edu-tainment is a revolutionary idea, which will almost certainly grow more noticed in the coming years.
if you are interested, here are some games and ideas about edu-tainment:
heaven's vault - this is a narrative adventure/archeology game set in space, where along with social aspects. you explore ancient sites and discover lost ruins, find artifacts and translate their strange hieroglyphics, and piece together the history of the world + an entire ancient language. this game is really interesting in learning about cryptography and archeology, and could give you a basic insight into what archeologists do!!
while true: learn () - this is a puzzle game about machine learning, neural networks, big data and ai, with a fun objective about building a cat-to-human speech recognition system, when you discover your cat is amazing at coding. you will make this through machine learning + using visual programming. i love this idea bc it combines something we all love (cats) with more advanced ai knowledge, which is becoming especially prevalent with the popularisation of chat gpt and the snapchat ai bot. it looks fun and quirky, and i can't wait to try this out!!
grammarian ltd - this is a simulation game about grammar, set in a semi-dystopian future where grammar is law (my kinda place). you play as a worker who corrects grammar on documents, and you are provided daily briefs on grammar devices and how to use them. at the end of your work day, you are scored based on your corrections and how much work you did (there is a stamina bar...) which will then influence your daily pay which you can use to buy furniture for your apartment with perks. this is an interesting game as it could be for all ages, and most definitely could be used in a school english class, while also being fun to play on your own time.
the room - this is an intricate puzzle game centered around trying to unlock complicated safes with the help of an eyepiece that will reveal different clues and mechanisms, with a range of puzzles including perspective based, musical, hidden objects, riddles, and motor interactions. i used to play this as a child, and it is available on ipad!! it is great for building logic and observance skills while in a low pressure environment, and is easily accessible to all ages, with a slightly creepy feeling but no jumpscares or horror.
venba - this is a game which i've mentioned on my blog before, and it is a narrative cooking game with a focus on reconnecting with your family's heritage, where you play as an indian mom who decodes and experiments with recipes to find the right solutions to restore missing bits of family recipes. all the recipes used in this game are actually real, and you could cook them in real life. this game seems like it would be great to learn about indian cuisine and culture, and the charming art style really adds to the relaxation of the game. releasing on the 31st july 2023.
trolley problem, inc - this is a dark comedy narrative game based on the popular philosophical conundrum of the trolley problem, where you are asked to choose between different awful choices (not always the trolley problem) and then be challenged by 'the narrator' on your decisions, with questions based on genuine philosophical papers that cite their paper. this looks like it would be entertaining to play to learn about philosophy and moral implications of problems, with a fun but dark mood, and around 1 - 2 hours of gameplay.
so to speak - this is a japanese learning puzzle game with a pixel art style where you wander around japan using context clues to guess to meaning of words you see and hear, with a scaling difficulty to help you build on your knowledge, going from simple words to complex sentences. this is a game i will definitely be using while i prepare for my japanese gcse, and it seems fun to be able to prepare for navigation if you're visiting japan!! this is unreleased, but will be coming out in 2023.

Some more? Some more.
Satisfactory: One of those make automation factory games, but this one was unique at the time for being in first person. Still in Early Access, with the story mode yet to be implemented, but the updates have all been really stellar and you can build some really impressive conveyor belt spaghetti with it. Made by the same people who did Goat Simulator so that's also why the game is Like That.
Contrast: A puzzle platformer that reminded me a lot of the American McGee Alice series, but without the combat. It tells a tragically beautiful story of a little girl's imaginary friend who might not actually be an imaginary friend but rather a stage performer that got caught in a science experiment and now exists as a living shadow, with some really fun puzzles that involve light and shadow and transitioning between 3D and 2D spaces.
Chroma Squad: A turn-based Strategy RPG very clearly inspired by classic Power Rangers where you control a bunch of actors that strike out to make their own low-budget super sentai show, and the battles are the episodes you're filming. Extremely charming.
Dead Cells: So inspired by classic Castlevania that they actually got a deal with Konami to make a Castlevania DLC that's really fun. Roguelike.
Hollow Knight: Metroidvania that I've seen referred to as a Soulslike, I'm not entirely sure if that just means the difficulty or the aesthetic, but it's another tragically beautiful hand-drawn game that I adore. High skill ceiling and a steep learning curve but not so steep that you don't feel like you can't accomplish it, and what I appreciate about this over most other games like that is that not only do they teach you the upgrades as you get them, you keep using them so you never actually forget that you can do a thing. Also very difficult - I've only managed one of the five unlockable endings.
Grim Dawn: I put down Blizzard games a while back for personal reasons but I was looking for something to scratch my Diablo itch, and this is it. Very intuitive, feels a lot like playing Diablo 3, and a surprisingly comprehensive dual-class system that lets you really experiment with your builds. My main complaint is that you can't customize your character's appearance outside of gear but that's minor.
The Steam Summer Sale might be almost over (you've got a little under one hour left as of the time of this posting) but there are always little sales here and there, on a bunch of different storefronts so here's a small, non-exhaustive list of the games I've been obsessed with that'll help you if you're looking for things to do during the SAG-AFTRA/WGA Two Strikes No Waiting
These are in no particular order, some of them are bigger names than others, some of them are older, but they're all ones I've personally enjoyed the hell out of
Tunic: I've only just started this isometric Zelda-like with the Dark Souls campfire mechanic that all games seem to have these days, but it's not only adorable, it's extremely engaging, and some of the collectables I've been finding have been pages of its own instruction manual. It's like a love letter to Link's Awakening.
Hardspace Shipbreaker: A first-person 3D-physics game wherein you disassemble spaceships and send the components into three different colored bins based on what they are. It's really soothing, the zero-G mechanics aren't that bad to get used to, the Americana Folksy soundtrack is a banger, and the background story is your crew working on setting up a labor union.
CrossCode: Another Zelda-like adventure platformer with surprising three-dimensional depth for a two-dimensional top-down game, you play someone logging into an MMO for the first time and finding herself wrapped up in the mystery about that MMO's development, and on the way make some fun friends like Emilie, the French girl who is obsessed with laser bridges.
Chained Echoes: I haven't gotten that far in this but I'm really loving it - it's a loving tribute to your favorite SNES RPGs, with what appears to be three warring kingdoms and fantasy mecha. Including a neat twist to the turn-based combat system where you also have to balance your offensive and defensive skills to keep yourself in the sweet spot that is Overdrive.
Cosmic Star Heroine: Another loving tribute to the SNES RPGs, this one Chrono Trigger in particular. Featuring the titular space heroine who actually has sensible boots and clothing. One of your party members is a lounge singer who is also an assassin.
Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous: Using the Pathfinder 1e rules and one of the most famous Pathfinder 1e Adventure Paths, much like the previous game Kingmaker, you've got a top-down RPG that plays like the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights classics, with a marvelous voice cast, some fantastic characters, and a relatively new photo mode that takes a bit to get used to but I really like.
Oxygen Not Included: A survival colony builder that's been described as a vertical Dwarf Fortress, it's cute and hand-drawn and surprisingly deep mechanically - the midgame involves managing heat and everything has a unique thermal conductivity. Be prepared to spend hundreds of hours in this, and you will die but every new game you start, you've learned something new about how to make your duplicants not die.
