Spent the week so far grinding away at Swarm Disaster, trying to complete Trailblaze Secrets and wrap up the Trail of Pathstrider. I should've tried to think smarter about it instead of running headfirst into stages I'm not stat ready for yet, so this one is all me. Best case scenario, I'll be done within a few more hours of AFK farming and ready to shelf this part of SU for Gold and Gears. Worst case, I'll be grinding between both after the new version update and losing my mind.

I should get around to finishing the backlog of companion missions too, but I'm taking my time with those. It's the whole "as long as I enjoy the journey, who cares how long it takes to get to the destination" thing. Bless Star Rail for not being annoying about quests like Genshin is, this is saving my life out here.

"mr. jeon!" his student lily called. "so you're telling me that after all that, she still hasn't kissed him?" he looked up from his desk and looked over to his obviously distraught student. "lily! i didn't even finish it yet!" her friend mina yelled at her.

"i'm sorry! it's just so crazy how they didn't even kiss! even after they made up and he said all of that to her!" lily huffed.

"what did he say to her? i haven't gotten there yet either," daniel piped in.

"just read it! i'm sorry i brought it up in the first place," lily sighed and pulled out the worksheets she was supposed to complete after reading the book. he shook his head and went back to inputting grades into his computer. it was silly to think lily was just going to do her work. "mr. jeon, do you have a girlfriend?" she asked putting her pencil down. he paused momentarily, fingers hovering over the keyboard. "dude, that's so not cool for you to ask mr. jeon," daniel complained.

"what? we're reading this romantic novel, is it not fair to ask our english teacher if he's in a relationship?" lily replied, crossing her arms. "i mean we have to be reading this book for some reason."

"maybe it's just a part of the curriculum," mina rolled her eyes.

"do you seriously think mr. jeon is sending us subminimal signals about his love life through the books we're reading?" daniel asked.

"i don't know! maybe!" lily said. the three of them continued to argue back and forth at their table. wonwoo should probably stop this before the other students get irritated with the trio. "guys, i can assure you, i am not sending any messages about my love life. please get back to your work," wonwoo cleared his throat. he heard a disappointed noise, but pencils went back to scratching and pages started flipping again. soon it was the end of the class period and everyone was packing up. it was just lily. "next time, please refrain from asking personal questions in class," he asked.

"yes, of course. i'm sorry mr. jeon," lily bowed her head.

"it's alright. it can just be a bit distracting for your classmates. let's try to be more considerate."

"will do," she said, turning on her heel.

"oh and lily, just between me and you," wonwoo paused. "i don't have a girlfriend."

"he said he wasn't in a relationship!" lily cheered. daniel stared at her baffled, "didn't he say not to tell anyone?"

"yeah, but i mean, he must know that i'm going to tell you guys. you guys don't seem as nearly as excited about this as i do."

"why would we be? he's single, it's not like you have a chance with him or something," mina commented.

"no! ew! i would never try to go after a teacher, are you crazy? i'm saying that this is a perfect opportunity for us to get mr. jeon a date!" lily practically squealed.

"a date? with who?"

"with miss ___, of course! who else? haven't you guys ever noticed that they spend almost every lunch period with each other? they're so cute together!"

"maybe they're just planning classes or something," daniel shrugged.

"um, hello? mr. jeon teachers english literature and miss ___ teaches physics b. what would they planning together?"

"touché."

"i think it's time to enact a master plan."

"so everyone understands this equation, right?" you said, turning back to face the class. "tell me now, so i can help. this equation is the very foundation to magnetism, if you don't get it now i can't promise you'll do well in this unit."

no one put their hand up. you smiled, "oh well, i guess we just have a bunch of physic masters in this class. but seriously, let me know if you need help. you can start working on your homework packet now, this way if you have questions you can ask them now. i don't need your frantic emails at midnight."

you returned to your desk and flipped through some lesson plans. you didn't get to finish eating lunch today, so you took out your lunch bag. a small slip of paper fell out of it and onto the ground. you smiled to yourself and reached down to pick it up. "miss ___!" your student lily said, she was standing at the foot of your desk.

"yes, lily?" you answered.

"i have a question about something."

"have at it."

"it isn't physics related though." you looked up, slipping the slip into your pocket. "then, what's it about? do you need to go to the nurse?" you frowned.

"no it's nothing like that, but i was told by another teacher not to ask questions like this in front of the whole class. he said it was inconsiderate," she shrugged.

"oh, um, well i guess you can go ahead."

"are you friends with mr. jeon?"

you froze. mr. jeon? as in english literature teacher mr. jeon? mr. jeon you eat lunch with him every day mr. jeon? maybe they started picking up on something. "well, yeah, i guess you could say that," you coughed. "why are you asking this all a sudden?"

"well, i came by mr. jeon's class before lunch to ask him about an assignment and i saw you there. i didn't want to interrupt, but i didn't know you guys were friends," she shrugged, averting her eyes.

"oh well, yes. mr. jeon started at his position around the same time i did a few years ago. so we got close because of that."

"that's so- i mean, i'm sorry to pry. i was just curious. i mean usually i don't see english teachers and physics teachers talk that much. thanks!"

the whole exchange left you a little baffled.

lily seemed determined to get you and wonwoo together. she began to pry more often and she was getting bolder one question at a time. she even asked if you were in a relationship and if you got you cute gifts for birthdays and holidays from your boyfriend. sometimes she got very bold and mentioned mr. jeon by name. "miss ___, don't you think mr. jeon is cute? you two would be so cute together." you had replied, "i don't think this is time or the place to talk about this, lily. please do your practice problems." you rolled your eyes, "i don't feel like i'm at liberty to answer that."

you couldn't bring yourself to actually discipline her or her friends (who had seemingly joined in on the deep dive about your love life). they were curious teenagers looking for gossip. hell, you were like that too. you felt it would be unfair to punish them for that, as long as it didn't get too inappropriate, you didn't mind. it was a bit endearing too.

you just had to push the thought out of your mind. it was time to go to lunch anyway. it was the perfect time to clear your head.

"has lily been asking you some personal questions lately?" wonwoo asked, leaning back in his chair. god, he looked so handsome today. his glasses, pressed shirt, and ironed pants. "yes, has she been causing a raucous here too?" you asked, taking a seat at one of the desks.

"well, she asked me if i think you're beautiful," he chuckled.

you paused. you would be lying if you said you didn't feel anything for the man sitting in front of you. he was smart and kind.

"of course, i told her you are a lovely human being inside and out, and to get back to doing her project."

"funny, she was telling me that she and her friends thought we'd make a cute couple." he laughed at that, and it made your chest flutter. you loved his laugh. "cute couple, that's so cute," he gasped.

"yeah i know right. who knew our students would start trying to set us up," you joked. he nodded in agreement getting up after his microwave went off from the other side of the room. "it would be so funny if they actually succeeded, but it does seem a bit pointless at this point, right?" he noted.

"yeah, totally pointless," you agreed.

you and wonwoo, being set up, by your students of all people. it sure would be for the books if it happened like that.

what an absurd idea.

the rest of the week went as usual, uneventful, but you did get to see wonwoo on the way out of the building and into the parking lot. he held his leather bag in his right hand. "on the way out today?" he asked. "don't you usually do tutoring sessions after school on fridays?"

"we just started a unit, and no one showed up after the fifteen-minute window. i'm out of here," you laughed. he smiled. you loved it when he smiled. "want to walk out together then?" he offered and pushed the door open for you. something about him was so calming and comforting. you smiled and averted your gaze to the floor. even after all these years, he made you a little nervous. you did miss the way he grinned when he caught your shy smile. he loved the way you smiled too. he couldn't wait to see it again, he needed to see it again as soon as possible. he was too lost in thought about the way you smile and the way your voice sounds, that he fell far behind you. "___, wait up," he called as you made your way through the faculty parking lot. he jogged to catch up to you and reached out to grab your hand.

"i swear i saw him kiss her out in the parking lot," daniel insisted. "they were holding hands too!" at this point, lily was totally unmotivated to get her two favorite teachers together. not after miss ___ shut her down on numerous occasions and mr. jeon was just as friendly but unbothered as ever giving his most PG answers. "whatever, daniel," lily huffed. "they would be so perfect together."

"he's literally telling you that they're together, he saw them kissing!" mina exclaimed. lily rolled her eyes. they were all hallucinating just to make themselves feel better that it was wishful thinking. "true love isn't real!" she cried.

"it's time to wake up, sweetheart," he mumbled. "you said you had lots of work to do today."

"yeah, well it's my day off too. i'll get to work later," his fiancé groaned.

"oh come on, i know you're desperate to do all that paperwork," he teased. he tugged on the warm body text to him to pull it closer to him. he loved waking up with his wonderful, beautiful, smart fiancé next to him.

he loved waking up next to you.

he knew the kids were asking about him and his love life. kids would be kids of course. "lily won't stop asking about my love life. it's funny since we both teach her," he said.

"i guess, she's never noticed the necklace with the ring hanging around my neck," you chuckled, nuzzling your face into wonwoo's neck. his arms easily wrapped around your body. he pressed a soft kiss to your forehead. "you know, lily asked me if i had a girlfriend the other week," wonwoo murmured.

"she asked me if i had a boyfriend too," you hummed. "i just told her that it wasn't appropriate to ask that in class."

"i said something similar, but i did tell her i didn't have a girlfriend."

you paused. why would he say that? he was very obviously in a relationship, well obvious to the two of you. he even gave you a ring and a nice dinner to cement your relationship. "i obviously couldn't tell that i didn't have a girlfriend because i have a wonderful, smart fiancé," he laughed. you breathed an internal sigh of relief, but you still hit him in the chest. "that's so stupid," you groaned. "you're catching everyone on a technicality." he thought he was so clever and funny, ever the wordsmith.

"it's so hard not telling the students," wonwoo whispered, and you nodded your head in agreement. he didn't know why the two of you didn't tell the students yet, but the relationship started a bit secretively, almost right after the both of you were onboarded. he guessed the two of you never got out of the whole secret relationship. it was a bit exhilarating keeping the secret between you and him, and the admin. he felt like a teenager again. "maybe we should ease them into it, but let's not let them think it was all them," you said.

"maybe it's time for you to start wearing the ring on your finger then," he commented pulling away to get a better look at you. "i can't wait for you to become mrs. jeon," he smiled.

"yuck, so corny," you rolled your eyes with a smile. "you need to stop with these cheesy sayings early in the morning." nevertheless, you leaned forward and kissed him. he kissed back easily, "come on, i know you like the little notes i leave in your lunch."

"i do, now be quiet and just kiss me."

"gladly."

he did have the whole weekend until he had to go back to school. at least you made the day a little better.

I don't get why people get all "but doesn't that suppress the real you" about psychiatric medications. And medications as a whole. The field of medicine in general. Like what exactly is the appeal of being all natural and organic, just like god intended. Bruh if your god's plan for me was to lay in bed and rot, and I can thwart your god's will just by taking four pills and five pumps of hormone gel per day, I'm gonna.

I'm gonna take every single pill, injection and vaccine that I'm offered if it's gonna let me do more of what I want to do, and less of whatever the hell unmedicated me would be doing. If I don't get into heaven because god no longer recognises me as his own creation, I didn't want to go anyway. I'm chemically min-maxing my corporeal form into doing and being whatever I want it to be. The warranty's void anyway.

If this meat suit can be operated incorrectly, I will find a way to do so.

The narrative of D&D

Fantasy High Junior Year has made its exploration of the tropes, mechanics, and structures of D&D readily apparent, perhaps even more so than the earlier two seasons. This is unsurprising for a show in which the characters are, in-universe, extremely aware of their mechanics and indeed in a high school intended to develop them. And yet, while Brennan Lee Mulligan pokes at these structures, the story still rests squarely within them.

This is not accidental; in longer form narratives (and Fantasy High as an overall story certainly is one, though each individual season exists in a strange no-man's land of campaign length) there is a distinctive pattern to the D&D narrative, one that is outright stated in the player's handbook. D&D is a progressive advancement game; characters grow in power and in sociopolitical import as they level up. They begin, even at level 1, as exceptional people (no commoner stats for them) and are destined by the fact that they are in a D&D game for greatness. There are things D&D supports well; travel, social interaction, one-time skill use, and combat. There are things it does poorly, notably downtime and stories that are not built along the lines of heroic fantasy.

I think this is a value neutral statement, in that I think that trying to avoid playing D&D while playing D&D is a futile exercise; your character will become more powerful while playing it and the only way to avoid gaining this power is to play a different game. I also think that while D&D has the potential to comment on our world from a new perspective, as most speculative fiction does, and is certainly not without flaws, that conversation is one for a later date. The structure exists; like it or not, it exists. There are other games to play that support other stories.

Fantasy High is direct in its engagement: characters are aware of their classes. They learn about the conventions thereof in their high school coursework, and must justify their multiclassing, both with their current level of power in their base class as well as with what they have done (both narrative and mechanical justifications). The antagonists of Junior Year are the Rat Grinders, explicitly commenting on Experience vs. Milestone leveling; several characters provide an eye into such D&D player tropes as min-maxxing and focusing on RP vs only on the game and mechanical elements. The Seven, set in the same world, operates on a similar premise; the party risks being broken up because half are still in high school and they would not survive a split of that level. Adventurers at the Aguefort Academy must adventure, and both the humor and deconstruction come from the juxtaposition of the conventions of D&D with the typical life of a high school student. The characters do level up; they do become more recognizable; they do have to save the world, repeatedly.

A somewhat subtler deconstruction comes in the form of NADDPod's first campaign, or as it was introduced, The Campaign after the Campaign. As envisioned by Brian Murphy (a player in Fantasy High; it is perhaps relevant that the two shows both began production around the same time), the world in which it is set is grappling with the aftermath of the "campaign" of the three legendary heroes Alanis, Thiala, and Ulfgar, who had slain Asmodeus, among other feats. While this ended a war, it set off several crucial events. Most centrally to the story of NADDPod, Thiala, disillusioned with her role as the healer, broke her worship of Pelor and used the heart of Asmodeus to ascend to godhood; she would eventually become the final antagonist of the campaign. However, the death of Asmodeus also set off a power vacuum in Hell. NADDPod's third campaign is set two centuries after the first, and the new legendary heroes (the Band of Boobs of the first campaign) have been dealing with the aftermath of an extraplanar war of the gods; Mothership, the main antagonist, arose in Thiala's wake. This is all typical actions leading to consequences, but the idea that the butterfly that flapped its wings was the resentment of someone having to play the cleric is notable (and is directly contrasted by Emily Axford's Bahumia characters, who openly embrace healing and support casting, breaking Thiala's cycle while cleaning up her mess.) But NADDPod too is heroic fantasy, even with the science fantasy elements present in the second season, and even slots nicely into the PHB tiers.

Critical Role does not, per se, strive to deconstruct in the same way (though Matt Mercer does provide some direct retorts to Forgotten Realms lore, particularly that of drow). But like NADDPod, the consequences of past campaigns influence subsequent ones. Campaign 1 is very easily recognizable as a classic "gain influence and power" story, and while Campaign 2's heroes the Mighty Nein retain a refreshingly low profile throughout the story, it does still progress in a typical way, though in a rather more self-directed manner.

Campaign 3 is interesting, in that it initially deviates from some of the more classic tropes of early D&D, but ultimately succumbs (to its benefit, in my opinion) to the inertia of the heroic fantasy arc. Bells Hells do not work their way up from level 1 or 2 taking on odd jobs; they begin the campaign by joining up with a benevolent patron, and several party members have pre-existing powerful connections. They receive the use of a skyship by episode 22 and level 6 (something even Vox Machina considered having to steal at level 13) and inherit it not long after. And yet: despite this, and a pivotal set piece of the apogee solstice in which a comparatively low level party plays a part among many factions, following a brief split the campaign begins to run on more familiar tracks. For all the early privileges the team enjoyed and the theological debates they engaged in, they ultimately find themselves in a position identical to that of the archetypal Vox Machina: facing an evil wizard who, after a rushed solstice ritual mid-campaign, only partially unsealed a long-imprisoned ancient deity of manipulation and destruction and now wishes to finish the job. One must assume Delilah Briarwood is appreciating the parallels from within Laudna's psyche.

Worlds Beyond Number is a player on the scene to watch out for, especially because Mulligan has shown himself to enjoy playing with these tropes and his players are all immensely knowledgeable and experienced players (and in Aabria Iyengar's case, DMs) themselves. Rather like Bells Hells, two of its three characters are coming in already in storied positions, despite being level 2, and it will be interesting to see if it bucks the trend. I don't think it needs to. I think there's plenty of variety to be had within this subgenre, and I think a quiet pushing at the boundaries is frequently more effective than full-scale subverstion. But should that be the plan, it will take a lot of work; even with immense awareness of the path D&D sets forth it seems DMs - and players - tend to stay on it.

OK, for better or for worse, time for Hector to deal with these githyanki on The Skull(tm).

Hector's new build with improved WIS for AC and Hill Giant Strength for Tavern Brawler damage is doing a LOT more work than he was previously. :D

58 points of damage on the turn is tasty. :D (I could min-max him to much more with gear but I'm not stressing that much over it.)

The githyanki are also terrifying however so this fight is still mega scary.

MVP of this fight turned out to be Slow from Gale, which I'd forgotten he even had access to until I reset the fight and looked through everyone's spell slots. It made a HUGE difference against these characters who can attack 2335265234 times in a turn and zip all over the place.

VERY INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT HOWEVER - during the middle of this combat, the Guardian/Emperor called out as a combat line:

"I must regain control over the githyanki prince!"

And oh.

Oh shit.

That's Orpheus in the light cage, isn't it?

Holy shit... Lae'zel is going to have a stroke over everything that happened here without her. O.O;

As the fight ends, the Emperor puts the githyanki back into whatever trance he was in when we arrived.

"Thank you," it intones gravely, turning back towards Hector and his companions. "That was too close."

"Don't look at me like that. I am a mind flayer, yes. Without me you would be a slave to the Absolute."

To be honest, I'm not sure Hector even knows what way he was looking at it. He's frightened, yes, but he's been frightened so long that it hardly feels like a change of pace. He's more confused than anything else; what is the "guardian's" true agenda? What is it doing to the githyanki in the trap? And why does it speak with emotion and ferocity, like a creature with a soul?

"Of all the creatures to be indebted to," Shadowheart mutters bitterly. "A bloody mind flayer."

"I ask again," Hector demands. "Who are you? And I'm going to need a name this time." He is so tired of the secrets, of the confusion.

"You may call me the Emperor," the creature says, and raises a fist glowing with pale energy.

A flash of white through his brain, the tadpole connection he is so familiar with from contact with his own companions. The mind flayer's memories surge over him in a rolling wave.

"An adventurer. I came from Baldur's Gate, though I was never one to be constrained by circumstance. I longed for more."

"That longing brought me to Moonrise Towers on a search for treasure. To a colony of mind flayers who caught me, changed me into what I am now. For years I served the elder brain - the one you know as the Absolute. I was a thrall like any other. But I was fortunate - I broke free, and started a new life in my old city."

"I sustained myself on criminals. Unglamorous, but there were plenty of them, rarely missed, and they fueled me while I did my work.

"I had the good fortune to meet Duke Stelmane. We formed a partnership, and through her I became the governing force behind the Knights of the Shield, the largest mercantile operation in Baldur's Gate. People referred to me as the Emperor - such was my influence. Though of course they had no idea what I really was."

"My needs were sated. I was... happy, for a while. Until my true nature was discovered by the tyrant himself - Lord Gortash."

"He tore me from my home and brought me back to the brain where I became a slave once again. A slave he continued to call the Emperor. The name was intended as a slight - to remind me of the heights from which I fell. But I have grown fond of it. It encapsulates well who I've become."

Hector listens to this tale in bewilderment. It seems almost too fantastic to be true - a mind flayer able to live in secrecy within the largest city on the coast? To command the Knights of the Shield, an organization so big even Hector has heard of it? He would think it impossible - if it weren't for Omeluum. He has seen a mind flayer broken free before.

The whole situation makes him feel tremendously uncomfortable. Trapped. But if the story is true, he and the Emperor have a common enemy. The Emperor and Karlach even have a shared experience - that of being pulled from their homes and enslaved by Gortash.

But there are still so many questions...

"That githyanki in the sphere," he says hoarsely, almost afraid to hear the answer. "Who is it?"

"Prince Orpheus," the Emperor says bluntly, confirming Hector's suspicions instantly. "Son of the first leader of the githyanki. His power has been the source of your continued protection against the Absolute - the power to disrupt hivemind communication. It is the same power that enabled Orpheus's mother to bring about the fall of the Illithid Empire eons ago, a power she passed on to him, and that I leveraged for you."

It turns to look steadily at the githyanki prisoner suspended with the shield at the center of the skull.

"When Orpheus's mother left, a usurper took her place. Vlaaktih declared herself 'queen' of the githyanki," it goes on, its voice a low growl. "Vlaakith wanted his power, but Orpheus rose against her. And so she sealed him and his honor guard within this Prism. Bound by infernal chains, Orpheus could never leave. Bound by duty, his guard never would. They were close to breaking my hold on their prince - and if they had succeeded, we would be lost."

It looks back towards Hector and inclines its head approvingly. "I am releived you have embraced your potential enough that you could help me eliminate them. Alone, Orpheus will be much easier to control."

Hector swallows. Not since the creche - and possibly not ever - has he been so confused about the right thing to do. He trusted the guardian (to a degree), and he needs the Emperor. But the imprisoned githyanki makes him uncomfortable. The Emperor's interest in his potential makes him very uncomfortable. The swirl of unspoken and unexplained intentions makes him tremendously uncomfortable.

"Were you imprisoned here too?" he asks.

"No," the mind flayer answers. "Gortash sent me on a mission to retrieve the Astral Prism. I was one of many, but the first to find it. How Gortash and the other Chosen learned of its existence, I do not know. The moment I found it, I felt a change. My free will returning. I followed the feeling inside - and found Orpheus. I realized what the Prism was for: containment. While my body was within the Prism's bounds, my mind was free. I could resist the elder brain, the Chosen. Better yet, I could plan to overthrow them. All I needed to do was subdue Orpheus and find allies in the outer world. You."

Hector remembers the visions of battle the guardian showed him before. He had assumed it was some extension of the battle against the Absolute, but in truth it was this creature battling against the incursions of githyanki trying to rescue their prince. The rebels against Vlaakith - the people like Voss.

"Was it you or Orpheus that Vlaakith wanted us to kill when she ordered us inside the Prism?" he asks, quirking one eyebrow up thoughtfully.

"Most certainly Orpheus," the Emperor says placidly. "He is a threat to her reign. Some githyanki still revere him, in defiance of their teachings. Vlaakith was safe as long as they believed him to be dead. But as you can see, he is very much alive. She kept him this way because she was reluctant to eradicate such power, power that she might one day wish to take from him. If the githyanki ever find out what she has done, there will be civil war. Vlaakith will be finished."

"What happens if we free Orpheus?" Hector asks.

"That would be a terrible idea," the Emperor snaps at once. "The moment he is free, he will attack you. Your only defense would be to kill him. And in so doing, you would doom us both."

Narrator: Even though he is subdued, you feel Orpheus's revulsion - a pulsing hatred that cannot be contained. The Emperor is telling the truth. To him, you are just another wretched illithid.

"You carry a tadpole," the Emperor growls. "As far as Orpheus is concerned, you are already illithid - a sworn enemy, just like me."

Thoughts are swirling in Hector's head, a variety of panicked possibilities. Could they bring Lae'zel here? Have her talk to Orpheus, calm him, explain the situation, work with him, free him from this prison? And yet the Emperor is right, the risk in doing so is terribly high and the cost of failure so astronomical...

He needs to get away from this place, needs time and space to think, to talk with those he trusts - among whom the Emperor no longer falls.

The creature's words strike him painfully as he struggles to settle his mind - the implication that in working alongside the Emperor, he has become a monster himself. "I'm no illithid," he says defensively. "And never will be."

"You are already more illithid than you realize - it has improved you," the Emperor says, and there's a strange sort of smirk in its tone that Hector does not like at all. "You seek to reverse an inevitable process, a process of evolution. When I first escaped from the elder brain, I too railed against the change. But the longer I have inhabited this form, the more it has grown on me."

It leans forward, staring intently into Hector's eyes. "Even if my original body remained intact after I transformed, I would not return to it. Doing so would only impose limitations. As an illithid, I have far surpassed who I ever was before. You, too, should embrace this change."

Hector's stomach churns with sudden revulsion. Any sense of safety he felt here suddenly evaporates. The Emperor may be his ally against the elder brain, but it is not his friend - it wishes him to become a mind flayer as well, simply of a different sort, free-minded but transformed.

"I'm trying to avoid becoming a mind flayer," he says sharply. "I thought you agreed to protect me."

"I believe we'll have a better chance of defeating the elder brain if you embrace your latent illithid potential," the Emperor says calmly. "I've been studying you for a while now. I believe I can trigger the next stage of your tadpole's lifecycle while continuing to preserve your independence." It takes another step towards him. "You have seen what I can do. Imagine yourself with the same strength. The same intelligence. The same devastating beauty. If you let me, I can evolve you."

Hector's skin prickles all over. He doesn't dare look away from the mind flayer but he is sure his companions are showing the same dismay and revulsion that he himself feels. "No," he says, shaking his head fiercely. "No way."

Narrator: Even as you say the words, you feel a lurch of disappointment. Your mind bristles with illithid potential. How could you be so cruel to deny yourself what you want most in the world?

The sensation of the tadpole itself seizing his emotions makes him feel even more ill. There is no safety even inside his own mind anymore.

The Emperor cocks its head to one side, as if amused. "I felt that. It's your nature. You cannot fight it, so embrace it."

It extends a hand, sending a pale green, glowing tadpole drifting towards Hector in the plane's lighter gravity.

"It wants to evolve," the Emperor growls. "But it cannot do so alone. It must commune with another."

"What is it?" Hector whispers hollowly.

"A tadpole, nurtured by the psionic energy of the Astral Plane," the mind flayer answers. "Cocooned here for millenia, it has become extraordinary."

Hector swallows, closes his eyes, fights against the force within his mind trying to urge him forward. [WISDOM] "No," he forces out. "I won't do it."

(A/N: NATURAL FUCKING 20! THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!!!!)

Narrator: A wave of disappointment, stronger than any you've ever felt. And then - stillness. You have resisted your illithid instincts - for now.

He realizes his free hand is clenched at his side, his jaw tight, his eyes squeezed shut. Every iota of his focus has been channeled into finding the stillness at the center of him. The calm. All things with her strength. I walk in the Moonmaiden's light... no grief nor pain nor fury shall wrest me from her path...

And the strain begins to ease, the tadpole receding into dormancy again. He can breathe. He can open his eyes.

The Emperor watches him thoughtfully, unblinking. "You are not ready yet," it murmurs. "Keep hold of it, then. Until you are. Perhaps you will be more inclined to try it when you see more of what our enemy can do."

It shakes its head sharply. "But we mustn't lose focus. We need to resume our journey. You heard the Chosen. The brain has gone to the city, and the army marches to follow. We must not let them reach it. We must find the brain and bring it under our control."

Hector isn't sure he much likes the way it says that, either.

"Let's go," he mutters to the others. His voice has started to shake as the adrenaline required to look the creature in the eye begins to fade. "Let's go. Now. Let's get out of here. We need to go."

"Are you all right?" Gale asks with some concern as they begin striding out of the skull as fast as their legs can carry them. "I very nearly thought your tadpole was going to make you--"

"It nearly did," Hector says curtly. "We need to go."

"Are we trusting this thing, then?" Karlach asks; her longer stride keeps up with him easily.

"No."

"But we're working with it."

"What choice do we have?"

They've never heard him so blunt, so clipped-off. "Soldier--"

"I don't know!" he snaps, not looking at any of them. "I-- we need to get out of here and I need to think. And I need to talk to Lae'zel. And I don't think any of us are going to enjoy it, including her."

So a couple of months ago I found out my favorite artist over on X is still behind on og OM. I was surprised because they've been part of this fandom longer than me. That's when I realized that maybe I'm not an average gamer?

I honestly thought I was average or even below average because I don't really min/max or strategize. I just really like Mammon so I aimed to put in what I thought was just a little extra elbow grease (and a little money here and there) to get his cards. I'm not a whale and I can't afford to be.

And yet I've already finished the entire main story of og OM, I'm about halfway through S3 hard and I'm fully caught up in Nightbringer. I seriously didn't realize this wasn't the norm. And many players find Nightbringer hard? I'm not trying to insult anyone or brag. I really just had no idea?

I get not getting as far when you have a busy job or school or disability or just life. I have a lot of time on my hands because I'm doing none of those things (I won't get onto my personal life) right now. Maybe that's part of it? That I've got an advantage by having mostly unrestricted access?

As far as the games being hard I definitely agree that the difficulty of stages are pretty harsh. That said I have high level cards to combat that and I use glowsticks/wands liberally. Nightbringer is pretty good about giving wands and it helps that they are clearly shown on devil trees unlike og that only marks everything as a surprise gift. I, personally, didn't think the game was particularly hard.

My best guess here is that I've fixated on OM so much that I'm willing to overlook various issues. Dp is expensive but I'm staying afloat with 400 or so most of time. I don't have VIP. I have every Mammon card in Nightbringer. I spent a ridiculous amount to get Mammon's birthday card. My highest level card is 107. I have 42 intimacy w/ Mammon and 20 intimacy w/ everyone else. I've basically run out of dv but I haven't spent any money in either game since Mammon's birthday.

I have played and deleted a lot of mobile games. Particularly gatcha based ones. I've seen greatness and disaster. Even with the questionable choices the devs have made OM is not the worst I've seen by far. Perhaps that fact has skewed my perspective a bit? I'm pretty sure that I am not a pro gamer by any measure.

I just... really like Mammon. So I do what I think I have to do to get my fix, I suppose.

Had a four hour car drive yesterday and thought about what monster hunter weapons each of the The Quarry characters would use so please enjoy this analysis of monster hunter weapon type mains and playstyles that literally no one asked for. I'm basing this off of World: Iceborne since it's the game I'm most familiar with.

Jacob:

This himbo would be a greatsword main. It's big, it's clumsy, but it packs one hell of a punch when it lands. Big sword means big damage numbers. He wouldn't use any of the side or rising slashes. It would be true charged slash or nothing, like god intended. He'd forget to block more often than not and get knocked back quite a bit, but he'd land enough hits to do a formidable amount of damage. Also, Kaitlyn would yell at him enough that he'd go after the tail like he's supposed to lol.

Kaitlyn:

My girl would be a light bowgun main. Heavy bowgun would be too slow for her tastes, and while it does do more damage, I could see her giving that up for more maneuverability. I could also see her doing a hardcore sticky build. It'd be five minutes into the fight and she's already got the monster stunned and on the ground. She never misses her shots and would be the one to take the time to tenderize monster parts before absolutely blasting them to shreds.

Depending on the monster, I could also see her doing a DPS spread build. She'd pile on the short-range damage mods and get up close and personal, hitting all the weak spots like the shotgun-wielding queen we know she is.

Any team she'd be on would be formidable, especially if she had someone like Dylan drawing aggro for her.

Dylan:

Our boy has two mains. The first is a defensive lance build. He's up front in center, hiding behind that shield while drawing aggro and taking hits like a champ. He's not a DPS, he's a full on tank, with max defense, fortitude, shield, and knockback jewels. And he'd be making jokes about stabbing the monster with his pointy stick the entire time, if you know what I mean.

His second main would be hunting horn. As much as the boy loves music, how could he not? Smacking monsters around while composing sick beats and buffing your teammates all at once is the perfect combo. He'd be a support-class king. I could see him running wide-range with speed-eating as well to serve as a healer.

Ryan:

Ryan's a bit harder to pin down since he can be equal parts aggressive/defensive depending on the choices you make in the game, so he'd probably choose a weapon that had a shield. More than likely it'd either be sword and shield or gunlance. He wouldn't bother with layering on the defense though, only elemental resistances. He'd boost his attack to get right in the thick of it, but would have a shield to fall back on if things got hairy.

His playstyle would be dependent on who his teammates were. If he's with Dylan, he's probably running sword and shield, because otherwise Dylan would be making jokes about him "blowing his load" in the monster with a gunlance.

If he's running sword and shield, I could see him running wide-range, especially if he's with both Kaitlyn and Dylan and Dylan was running lance.

Laura:

Girlboss is in it to win it. She's DPS through and through. Shields are for people who don't know how to dodge. If the monster is hitting you hard you hit it back harder.

When she's with other people she's maining switchaxe and is min-maxing the hell out of her build. She's got max attack, max expert, max challenger, and is eating for attack. She's zero sum discharging her load right into the monster's weak point and is loaded up on destroyer jewels to break every part on that motherfucker. If you can kill a monster fast, Laura can kill it faster. If it takes longer to set up a trap than it does to kill the monster, she's killing it.

When Laura is solo she's running a min/max heroics hammer build, because she fears no god and she fears no monster.

Max:

Max is a dual blades user. Easy to learn, easy to use, with the added bonus of Naruto running. He'd be more of a healer support build, running wide-range and buffing Laura so she could focus on damage. He'd make sure all the parts were tenderized for her. But he'd also always try to mount the monster (and of course make jokes about it), much to Laura's chagrine.

Abi:

Insect glaive all the way. She's up and away from the fight playing The Floor Is Lava. She'd load up on defense and elemental resistances and max her stamina regen to let her keep going as long as possible. She's not here to DPS she's here to survive and she'd be good at it. Also, she thinks the kinsect is cute.

Her and Nick/Emma would make a good team since most of the time she'd be out of the way of their attacks and wouldn't get hit. Abi would always want to capture monsters because she would feel bad killing them.

Nick:

Nick's another hard one to pin down, but I could see him maining either longsword or heavy bowgun. Both because they would make him look cool lol.

For longsword he would focus on using helmbreaker as much as possible but wouldn't be great at countering. He'd also forget that his spirit attacks hit his teammates and would get in fights with Jacob since they would constantly be interrupting each others combos.

For heavy bowgun, he wouldn't have different builds, he'd probably just have one generic build for everything. He wouldn't use just one type of ammo, he'd switch between everything he could fit in his inventory. He'd prefer wyvernheart over wyvernsnipe.

Emma:

Emma would be a chargeblade main with an equal parts defense/damage build. It's a flashy weapon that still has good defensive capabilities and she would take the time to properly learn how to counterblock and the intricacies of sword and shield mode versus axe mod. I could see her also focusing on utilizing monsters' elemental and status weaknesses against them. She'd be an ideal teammate for the Alatreon fight.

I could also see Emma using bow. She'd be inflicting statuses on monsters left and right. And as a bow user, she'd be a clutch claw queen. She's tenderizing all the parts and is the first to throw the monster into walls as soon as they unenrage.

I might redact the concept of skills from Prisoner's Punishment.

The game is intended to be loot and environmentally based rather than min maxed from the start.

So ability score increases will have to do more, but not activated skills or any such thing. Just little passive bonuses.

Skills will still exist, just attached to equipment you find. You don't go in knowing spells or having fancy wands or armour...

Stranger Things and Lighting (Season 2: The Snowball) - Full Analysis (Pt. 25.1)

Okay, so. This really isn’t a part of the Lighting of this analysis. But, the Rink O’ Mania disco ball has been haunting me ever since I noticed that it was positioned behind Will an ungodly amount for someone who wasn’t a main character in that scene (not Mike or El). Anyways, I’ve talked already talked about that.

So, what is this?

This is a theory post that I need to make to A. Get My Own Thoughts in Order, and B. Make What I’m Trying to Say Next Make Sense. First, before I get into The Snowball (I am analyzing this in the second half of the post, in case anyone would rather skip to that), I need to explain myself.

Mike’s Character Arc:

Mike Wheeler’s character arc is more of a dip than a circle or an arc. Season one starts with Mike at his highest, season two is going downhill, season three is rock bottom, season four is getting back up, and season five will be finding himself again.

This is related to how much he’s trying to fit into society and how much of an ‘asshole’ (Nancy’s words) he becomes. In season four, we do see Mike becoming less of an asshole, he falls short sometimes, but he’s trying. With the Hellfire Club, talking to El, and talking to Will, he’s trying to find himself again.

This dip, causes a parallel structure in the arc, season three being an outlier because it’s the bottom of the dip. However, this dip is not exclusive to Mike’s arc. It’s true for the entire series. There are a lot of parallels in Stranger Things, a lot. But there is also a pattern to those parallels.

We are only able to see the pattern emerge with what we’ve seen in season four. Because season four parallels season two.

Math and Patterns rant, you have been warned: (As a visual of what I’m saying, here’s this graph. To rant a little about patterns here, they aren’t always intended and thought out, but they are always present. Humans have many unconscious processes that use and require patterns that we don’t notice in our daily lives. Cell division, the digestive system, the nervous system: all complex processes and patterns in our bodies. So, yes, this is a sinusoidal function. It looks pretty close to y=cos(x). It’s got a max and a min, and can in fact be graphed. (which is pretty fun and funky if you ask me).

I’m not really saying that this was a conscious decision, but rather it’s a result of patters being apart of how we think and patterns being present in every aspect of life (or nearly every aspect, I don’t know, shit could be wild out there).

BUT, it does show what I’m talking about pretty well. Season one and five are parallel, as well as season two and four. Season three is rock bottom. The parallel structure is intended, the sinusoidal function perhaps not so much. But it’s still pretty neat!)

In both season two and season four:

-Max gets an extremely relevant plotline; Introduced in season two, is Vecna’s target in season four. She and Will almost trade spots in terms of a romance arc and being a target of the Upside Down.

-El has an independent plotline and is separated from the rest of the group; In season two it’s breaking away from Hopper and running away and finding Kali. In season four she kind of breaks up with Mike and goes and joins the Nina project. She finds out more about who she is and her past with the Hawkins lab.

-’I love you’; in season two Steve and Nancy break up because she doesn’t love him anymore, whether she ever really did is unclear. In season four Mike can’t tell El that he loves her up until the monologue due to outside factors. Jonathan and Will both try to help Nancy and Mike with their relationships but obviously love the person that they’re trying to help.

-Hawkins lab relevance with Kali in season 2 and Brenner in season four; the opening scene of the season in seasons two and four are about Hawkins lab and the people involved in it. Brenner’s memories of the incident in season four, and Kali’s introduction in season two.

- Mike and Will relationship development/ paired off and separated from the group. Emphasis is placed on their relationship but as a team. In season two Mike and Will were paired off and work as a team to try and stop the mind flayer and in season four they’re paired off while trying to find El.

-both have nine episodes; the episode numbers alternate by season. Seasons one, three, and five have eight episodes, while seasons two and four have nine. These further add to the parallel structure of the series/story.

The point:

Season two and season four are connected- just like how season 5 and season one are going to parallel each other (and maybe season three, although I’m not too sure on that one yet, because it’s the bottom of the arc and I’m not too confidant it will match up in this. But I’m also not 100%. So. Idk yet). This is the upswing of the series, season three was rock bottom, and now things are going to go up.

But that is not my point. My point is that the Snowball is a problem. It is in episode nine for a reason, that disco ball is there for a reason, the disco ball at Rink O’ Mania is there for a reason (other than drawing attention to Will): it’s all there because it means something.

I cannot analyze what is happening in the snowball scene (lighting aside, we’ve gone rogue- for now. It’s temporary. I’ll return to the light- lol- eventually.) without looking in depth at what happens in season two. More specifically the snowball.

So, I’m going to lay that out here. The snowball specifically happens at the end of episode nine of season two and about half or more of episode nine of season four. This is intended because of the parallel structure of the seasons.

Without knowing the themes of the Snowball in season two, the snowball in season four isn’t going to make very much sense. That being said, “forced conformity, that’s what’s killing the kids!” is from season four. But it is the entire point of the Snowball in both season four and season two.

S2:E9 - The Snowball (Pink and Blue)

Starting off here, we’ve got Mr. Clark putting up the banner. We can clearly see that ‘Snow’ is hidden and there is an emphasis placed on ‘ball’. This imagery is present in season four as well. The disco ball at Rink O’ Mania, Max’s memories of the Snowball, some other things that are relevant later (and I can’t explain fully here without analyzing up to that exact point).

Mr. Clark is wearing green and red, while the person standing and watching him is wearing blue and red/pink. The colour scheme for the Snowball appears to be blue, silver and red.

Will is wearing a blue tie.

Mike is wearing a red tie.

Lucas is wearing a pink and blue striped shirt.

Erica is wearing a blue and pink shirt.

Max is wearing green. Billy was also seen when we saw Max and was wearing blue.

Dustin is wearing blue but looks into a red mirror and has more red objects that compliment his blue.

Steve talks to Dustin, now that they’re friends and he’s trying to teach him how to talk to girls. Steve is wearing red.

The girls behind Dustin are wearing pink and blue. The balloons are white and blue (which may have changed in season four).

Steve looks past Dustin at Nancy, she’s wearing pink.

The balloons did change, they look tarnished and nearly gold instead of silver or white. (this is due somewhat to the upside down, but this memory is still set in a darker tone even when Max first arrives in it).

This shot mirrors the ones in season four, except we can’t see the emphasis on the disco ball as much here as we do there. This is also a juxtaposition of the darkness of Max’s memory. From this perspective we can also see green, red and blue as our main colours.

Looking at Nancy, we can see that she is indeed wearing a pink plaid dress and gold earrings. Her eyeshadow/eye liner is purple and her hair is nearly as curly as we see it in season four. Behind her we can see two girls in blue and pink dresses.

Dustin finds the rest of the party and is then told his hair looks weird. In the background we can see more blue, pink and red outfits.

Mike is in center frame, even though we’re mainly following Dustin. Will also takes up a lot of the frame considering it’s mainly Mike and Lucas who are joking about Dustin’s hair. Everyone in the party is important to watch in this scene.

We see more of Max’s outfit when the camera changes angle and she is wearing some red, but she stands out against the red and blue dresses that the other girls are wearing.

And again we see Mike in the center of the frame even though the scene doesn’t seem to concern him all that much.

The people in the background aren’t all wearing blue, red and pink, but the ones that are in our direct line of sight usually are.

Max is starring off where Dustin was when Lucas tries to ask her to dance.

We see Dustin watching it go well, and we see his hope start to crumble.

Despite Dustin being the one who liked Max, Will and Mike are still in center frame. We see all three of their reactions. Will looks relatively normally at them leaving, Dustin seems a but shocked but resigned, and Mike looks a little bit sad.

We see all three of them and then we focus in on Max and Lucas. Max is wearing a yellow watch, one that she is still wearing in season four. In season two Max also has green vans which change to red when we see her in season four. Green has connotations of hiding/ not being able to find the colour red just yet. That was established in season one at Will’s funeral.

After we focus on Max and Lucas we flip back over to look at Dustin in the center of the frame. We see him looking at them from a distance. We know that he’s sad because he liked Max, and she’s dancing with someone else.

Counting down the hours until Baldur's Gate 3 drops. Already fully planned out my first character, Azurum the blue dragonborn (Gloomstalker 6 lvls/Battlemaster 6 lvls) who dual wields rapiers coated with poison (I've limited my exposure to early access for spoiler reasons so I'm only aware of the basic 1d4 poison).

If my math is right the damage output is going to be kinda stupid by level 12. I didn't start out intending to min/max, I just had a fun idea and didn't want to fall behind my party members in damage and things, as they do, just got out of hand. There's definitely a little wiggle room depending on what gets revealed pass level 5 in the game, such as does the ranger get to pick extra favoured enemies/terrain and what additional feats they reveal, but I'm pretty happy over all with the roadmap I've created. With a 19 base AC (not assuming magic armor or spells) as well as strength, dexterity, and constitution saves (not to mention innate lightning resistance as well as possible ranger granted resistances), he should be comfortable on the front lines with someone more tanky to draw primary aggro. If need be he'll have a backup shield to swap out the offhand rapier for as well if the going gets tough for that sexy 21 AC (whopping 25 AC if a full +3 armor and +3 shield is available!). Strongly considering the menace battle maneuver as well for additional survivability. Really looking forward to discovering all the unique items in the game and figuring out what suits my scaly lil' blue boi the best!

A very unwarranted introductory gameplay breakdown of Mario+Rabbids, a game I take way too seriously:

So the first big new original Mario game of the Switch back in late summer of 2017 was... not just a Rabbids crossover, but a turn-based tactical shooter? This was leaked ahead of time too, not only in early word-of-mouth rumours but also a promotional image that infamously gave Peach the title of "Badass Princess" (NOT kidding in case you missed that)... what do you even make out of a reveal like that?

Well, turns out, a very creative and beginner-friendly take on the genre that's also not afraid to turn on the heat when it wants. The style is also largely standard pleasant Mario fare with the less defined but still recognizable Rabbid twist, all tied together by a delightful soundtrack by the legendary Grant Kirkhope of Donkey Kong and Banjo Kazooie fame.

And while it's not a game I hear many people raving (no pun intended) about much, apparently enough other people liked it for the game to be considered a success, to the point where not only did it get a side story DLC featuring Donkey Kong in 2018, but also a full sequel in 2022, Sparks of Hope, which I'm still in the process of clearing myself but I feel confident in calling a grand improvement almost completely.

But you could read the first line, my focus here is to give a rundown of how the gameplay works, which will be followed up by posts about each of the characters across the two main games (still haven't played the DK DLC for Kingdom Battle or the Rayman DLC for Sparks of Hope, oops). This post is to break down the general mechanics for those unfamiliar, before I can then go into detail for talking about the main attraction: the characters themselves. Because again, I'm the person who cares too much about the metagame of a Rabbids tactical shooter.

So let's go over those basics. We're gonna primarily focus on the first game, mostly because it's the one I'm more fully experienced with (since I. y'know. already beat it) and also because it's the simpler of the two.

Breaking things down, the gameplay is set in grid-based maps, with each map having a dedicated mission. The most common variety is simply "Defeat All", but you may have to beat a certain number of enemies that come from constantly spawning waves, have any of your characters reach a set location, or (most dreaded) escort a non-combative character like Toad to a set location.

But what about the characters that can actually do stuff? You select a team of three characters, starting with only three but unlocking more after big milestone levels across the main story. The cast is Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and rabbid counterparts of the four. The new rabbids are treated like equal characters in their own right, though they tend to at least have a vague gameplay theme in common with their non-rabbid counterpart. Both Peaches can heal, both Marios have hammers, and both Luigis... well they're both weirdos, at least.

There's an important thing to note about the first game though: your team comp is a bit restrictive. For one, Mario is a forced party member at all times. You're perpetually stuck with Mario and only get two picks, but those other slots have an annoying restriction too. The party is forced, by law to contain at least one Rabbid. Because Mario is always in the party, that means you can only pick one between Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi. You can pick two of the Rabbids if you want, which is a fine enough strategy, but you can't have just a party of the classic Mario, Luigi, and Peach, which sucks because as I'll explain later, that'd arguably be the best team in the game. The original humans/dinosaur tend to be more min-maxed than their parodies, with some bigger weaknesses but more defined strengths, bar the ironic exception that Rabbid Mario is more aggro and bombastic than the original.

So we know the who, but what about the what, as in what do characters do?

Well, each character has access to basic movement, two basic attacks (a primary and secondary weapon, with the latter having a one turn cooldown), and two unique cooldown-based abilities (hey like that one game!). You can only move once, attack once, and use one ability with each character in one turn. Movement warrants a special mention, as this game has two unique and stylish mechanics every playable character has access to: the Dash and the Team Jump. Dashes can be performed by selecting an enemy during your movement, letting your character bump into them along their path for an extra little bit of damage that can bridge the gap to confirm an early kill, or finish off a low-health enemy. Team Jumping instead requires you to select an ally during your movement, letting them use a teammate as a trampoline to greatly extend their movement range. Each character also has a special trait to one of these two movement actions: the original Mario gang each has a special Team Jump, while the Rabbids have uniquely improved Dashes.

But to unlock and improve most of these abilities, you need to visit the skill tree:

Don't let the term scare you, it's actually a pretty tame skill tree system.

You first unlock your character's special movement ability, secondary weapon, and second ability for relatively cheap upgrades you should have for almost the entirety of the game besides very early on. For instance, Mario starts with the standard blaster and a reactionary shot ability, while he has to unlock his stomp jump, hammer melee, and team damage boost ability. You can also upgrade both the default and unlockable abilities extensively, along with a few other random stats like health and movement range, which over the course of the game really makes each character come into their own.

You progress the skill tree by collecting Skill Orbs earned by finishing normal linear main story missions, as well as by exploring the sections of the world between missions and completing bonus challenges unlocked after completing each main area. And don't worry, you can also reset any character's skill tree as much as you want from the menu, no penalty or cost whatsoever.

Though on the note of cost, you can also use the coins you grab along your adventure to purchase weapon upgrades, which increase linearly throughout the game in power and unlock as you progress, though you typically get two options with different critical status effects for each character available at any time. Critical hits in this game not only do more damage, but also inflict debuffs that can move or hinder the enemy in a variety of ways. Most characters typically have a clearly ideal debuff choice, but for others it's hard to choose and really down to preference.

(also yes, you read that name right. this isn't even the only time they say "Hell" in this official Mario game.)

So that's I think more or less what you need to know to get how characters in general work in this game, so the next posts will be about the individual characters, grouping up the original characters with their Rabbid counterparts just for the sake of making less posts overall. So that's one for the Marios, the Luigis, the Peaches, the Yoshis, the two DK DLC characters, and I may do an additional post for the three new characters from Sparks of Hope if I've beaten it by then.

I'm trying to get into caves of qud after seeing you post about it but i'm finding it so hard! Do you have any tips for a new player pls? ty

oh man, yeah, the starting curve can be really really difficult! here's my tips for how i get a run off the ground! 1. Avoid min-maxing on a build while you're still getting a feel for what different stats can do for you. Even if you have a very specific idea in mind, it's way more important to have a strong core than idealized stats at game start. Dipping very low on any stat will be punishing in different ways so plan carefully 2. Start in Joppa if you're new to the game. Even a procgen village that's still in the marshes is a way less controlled starting environment.

3. The chests in Joppa that are in rooms with closeable doors can be opened as long as you are in the room, alone, with the door closed. You can often find enough artifacts in there to complete Argyve's first two initial fetchquests right away, which brings you up to level 2 immediately. Even if you don't, you will find stuff to help round out your starting gear! I don’t always do this, and it’s not like, a necessary step, but its good to know about. 4. The chests in Argyve's hut can also be safely opened in his presence as soon as you complete these first two quests and get made his apprentice, if you're looking for more gear with less theft involved. 5. OBTAIN A MISSILE WEAPON AND AMMO FOR IT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. Cannot stress how many runs I've lost very early because I think to myself 'maybe this time I'll be fine leaving town without a ranged weapon'. There are a lot of enemies that are easy later who you really do not want to touch you at low levels. Even if it's just a shortbow, you want something you can kite and run with. If I start with a bow, I generally pick up all the ammo the merchant has, so that if I pick up a better missile weapon with different ammo requirements later, I'm prepared. 6. Don't do the starting quests straight away! I generally try to spend my first levels exploring the salt marshes and hunting crocs and then only try hitting up Red Rock around level 5 unless I'm really confident I've got a tough build for close-range melee going. There are some valuable things in the marshes that you can stumble across to make your starting game easier, such as a very high-tier merchant and a set of mechanical wings that you can repair post-Red Rock to get in and out of the Rustwells fast. Plus, exploring is fun! 7. If you do just want a big glob of xp that you can obtain relatively safely you can also get the zealot's quest and high-tail it to the Six-Day-Stilt immediately. The desert is pretty safe to traverse if you only do so during daylight, bc you can see the whole tile at once and avoid tiles with enemies. (And if you are traveling to the Stilt at a low level you will want to avoid every hostile creature you see). Completing this quest awards you a big packet of xp, and the Stilt has further opportunities to get xp. (You should honestly always go get this quest first thing even if you don’t intend to complete it for a while, because the zealot doesn’t stick around forever).

8. If you're playing a truekin, you can find at least one guaranteed Becoming Nook and credits to use it at the Rusted Archway, but be warned that this is definitely something you want to do after your starting stuff, it's a little tougher than Red Rock. If you haven't found any cybernetics stuff before this point tho its a really good resource.

9. There is nothing wrong with cutting and running from situations. In fact, even at higher levels, the biggest tool in your arsenal is knowing when you need to bail on a situation and having the means to do so.

10. Do still be prepared to die. A lot. Starting out in Caves of Qud means learning through your own death quite often. I'm still occasionally finding novel new ways the world around me can kill me! It's part of the experience!

(a lot of) Oberon stuff

I decided instead of using my stockpile of forma for farming more kuva and tenet weapons for mastery rank fodder, I'd dump them into oberon because...I mean, why not

tbh, I just kinda like them. They were one of my first faves years and years ago and I haven't really touched them in years because, surprise surprise, they are/have been/continue to be kinda "mid" as power creep and buffs have spread to other frames.

AT LEAST for a layman player. Some tuber with maxed arcanes and 30k plat can probably post some build claiming Oberon is the best because he can't die, as if the arcanes aren't doing the heavy lifting lmao.

Despite that, they have always been my favorite support frame on an aesthetic and conceptual level, and I've always been annoyed that the druid healer frame is pretty much the worst healer in the game with Trinity spamming free full heals with free DR, Wisp being BUSTED (love her), and now Citrine just casually giving everyone free DR- HoTs as a passive- and orbs (also LOVE her).

ANYWAY, I sat down and theorycrafted some stuff, I was THIS close to putting my stockpile of umbra forma into him and just making him a pseudo tank that kept up phoenix renewal (maybe another day, and a second oberon prime lmao because I'm not overwriting all my hard work).

The plan was to basically push his armor and health to the extremes and just kinda, exist. Okay, saying it out loud sounds boring, so I'm glad I didn't do it, but I did really want to push his power strength high as hell while tagging on Primed Flow and some basic eff/duration to keep renewal going alongside all the beefed defenses.

I deleted that build idea so here's a mock up that's clearly inaccurate since it's lacking the flow etc but that tasty Effective Health was the goal (I'd have definitely used some staples like rolling guard etc instead of like gladiator resolve):

At the last minute I decided to do some browsing for other ideas and I came across some niche steel path gimmicks abusing quadratic scaling from ragdolling enemies interacting with his Reckoning augment.

tl;dr, stack enemies, use reckoning augment, silly funny extremely good things happen.

Now at first I figured the build just wasn't for me, but the more I thought on it, and the more I tweaked it for my own enjoyment and not just copying the max/min setup, the more it sounded interesting to try.

So I did it.

He's not done just yet, obviously. No subsume because the intended subsume is Gyre's to grant better energy economy and abuse the whole "ragdoll + reckoning = broken" thing, so I'm not even utilizing the interaction yet.

Also few shards, needs more shards.

Also it's still a work in progress- I'd like to toss on at least 1 go-to survival mod on him, but I haven't decided what I want to axe to do that. I'm thinking rolling guard for more leeway since he's shield gating (my first real build to abuse the mechanic) but figuring the values out on this build was tight enough without thinking "Oh, one more mod!" so we'll see. He can currently survive just fine in steel path content owed mostly to the CC of the mass radiation, tbh, and that might not even be an issue if the gyre interaction works out to just making everything too dead to hurt him in the first place. We'll see.

But the gist of him, as he currently exists, is pretty simple.

He nukes with his 4 and uses his 2 to ignore status / the need for primed sure footed on steel path builds.

The augment for his 4 is fucking fantastic thanks entirely to it scaling off range.

Too bad this patch note isn't right and it's still bugged and can revert to the 3m starting range whenever it wants in online content :/

Regardless, I mostly wanted to ramble on the short design journey on making this new build because the mid-point-result has been EXTREMELY fun to play lately.

Sure, he's not getting much use out of his renewal, and he's not enjoying the silly fun of smite infusion, and he's lacking some core parts to his build (that subsume is like 2 days out), BUT! As is, as a max range shield gating nuker, he's having a lot of fun. You know, when warframe doesn't decide to remove the range mod effect for no reason.

I honestly hadn't ever thought of making him into a nuker before, so mostly the novelty is making it fun.

I have only ever tried making oberon a mass CC gardener who keeps renewal up for that armor bonus, or a mass healer with eff/duration to allow it, or a smite infuser to assist groups with being weapon platforms.

Nuker never appealed to me because his 4 never appealed to me, his 2 and 3 were my faves and his 1 (with augment) was a simple radiation buffer.

Using his 4 so much and to such great effect is honestly just fun lol
