Prompt 176
Danny would like to blame Vlad for this, but it’s actually his own fault. He was the one who insisted on telling his parents about the whole half-ghost thing since everything else was going so well. He was the one who insisted on not waiting, on not using a duplicate and doing it in person.
Which resulted in the situation they both were in now. Injured, destabilizing, and barely able to retreat through the portal. His parents hadn’t taken things well and he would have probably ended up in one of the cages or worse if Vlad hadn’t been skulking around.
If they could make it to the Far Frozen they’d be alright, maybe. At least safe enough to not be in as much shock as he was right now and to properly take in what had happened without having to worry so much about blood loss. Ecto loss? Ugh, he was starting to get dizzy.
Maybe a nap would be fine? Vlad was still able to fly… he thinks. Just a little nap and a moment to figure out what to do. To… something. Why is it so much harder to heal now…?

Nah, your mention of the teacup scene was honestly perfect, because, just like P-Z it just feels so weird, and just kinda pointless/disjointed.
Heckers, even the people I know who LIKE the story of totk, did not seem to like the teacup scene.
Also, if I can throw in: It felt like a scene that, in its idea, should have been in the DLC. Maybe actually focus on just Sonia and Rauru as people, instead of the weird "talking around the bush, your powers don't work, Link, and the other piddly talk."
Like in the botw DLC, the focus was more on a "slice of life" peek into the Champion's life. It's such a waste of main-story content, and literally established nothing new. Heck, I actually hate that scene because it's just such a lazy way for Rauru to find out who Link is, and then later tell Ganondorf about Link.
Additionally, while we're talking about disappoint scenes/bad writing. Zelda's "I didn't remember anything from being a Dragon." It was such a bad cop-out, and it annoyed me to no end. They didn't need to mention it, leave it up to the player to interpret if Zelda remembers, and what she might have remembered or forgotten. The way it gets dropped is also like a hard rock. Riju: "So how was it?" Zelda: "Lol idk, don't remember."
It's weird how you can put Botw-Zelda's sacrifice against Totk-Zelda's sacrifice, and Botw she just sacrificed a lot more, even though Totk really plays up the severity of the "Sacrificing yourself to become a dragon"-thing, only for it to just be the most overhyped McGuffin to get Zelda back into her time.
Hey, thanks for the follow-up!
Yeah, agreed. I have talked extensively about the dragon problem somewhere??? I'll try to find it. Here! Which is basically that even if I agree the dragon thing is super cool and powerful and visually jawdropping and emotionally something, it's... kind of not a lot of what it claims to be.
But in addition to that, you made me think of something else by having this comment; there are multiple times during voiced cutscenes specifically where lines are used (I say used because every voiced line costs *so much money* so producers will always beg you to keep them to a minimum) to reassure the player that nothing truly bad is happening.
The thing with Zelda telling you she doesn't remember her time as a dragon is a great example, but there are many more. The first time I actively noticed it was during the Sealing cutscene where Rauru dives in to put his hand in Ganondorf's uhh tender heart (and he steals his magic? I wish something was actually done with that it could have been great if Rauru was corrupting himself voluntarily or something), and there is a whole dialogue where Ganondorf goes "hahaha thousands of years will pass in the blink of an eye", which could be a way to just brush off Rauru's actions as negligeable, but could also be a way to minimize the toll of time taken on both of them the same way it did for Zelda, especially since they semi-turn to stone immediately after. There are a lot of dialogue bits that feel like they are here for damage control and reassure us that the nice things are nice and the bad things are bad (a lot of the gerudo Sage dialogue also reads like that to me as well).
But yes, in general, it is a game that is incredibly averse to consequences, which does a lot of harm to its narrative tension in my opinion.

Hey, you've gone quiet for a while. I hope you're doing okay. Just checking in. :)
There was actually a week+ of replies in the queue (which eventually ran out a week ago) when I went offline, so I've actually been quiet quite a bit longer than that.
The short of it is the cake was a lie the first test was wrong, it was indeed Covid and not the flu. (Apparently this is what I get for skipping the latest booster shot). Since I'm in the high risk group, I actually got sent the ever-popular Paxlovid anti-viral, but since we were in the middle of a snowstorm at the time, it took a couple days to arrive and went past the optimal period to start treatment.
I've been doing the "getting better, whoops spike a temperature, start all over again!" thing for a few weeks now and its aggravated some of my chronic conditions.
In other words, expect replies and updates to be quite a bit slower until I'm better (especially as there's no more queue to run in advance, so if I'm posting it means I feel good enough to be online that day).

Thinking about the role swap aspect of the Gwen 10 timeline… do Kevin and Charmcaster swap too?
They’re both meant to Prime Ben and Gwen’s rivals, but it’s not like Gwen 10 can just get Kevin or Gw10 Ben can get Charmcaster.
Ben meeting Kevin isn’t based on Ben having the Omnitrix; it’s based on Ben’s internal conflict. A conflict that I don’t think Gwen would repeat in a similar enough fashion to properly meet Kevin, partner, reveal the Omnitrix, and then him absorb the DNA energy.
On the opposite end, Ben couldn’t have Charmcaster as a rival because he can’t rival her. He wouldn’t be able to do magic in the first place.
(While I very much enjoy magic / anodite Ben in fan content, I think it’s very cool and interesting, I personally don’t see 10-year-old Ben sitting down to properly learn magic like Gwen did- which is what I think is implied to have activated Gwen’s ‘spark’. I think Ben would learn how to use Plumber tech and weapons to be helpful. He’s already shown to be excited to ‘be a plumber in training’ in classic and that would be even more so in this case. Maybe his equivalent to Prime Gwen’s training in martial arts and magic between the AF time skip is properly training to be a Plumber?)
So does that mean Gw10 Charmcaster tries the ‘steal the Omnitrix’ thing her Prime counterpart did, but instead of a body swap she tries some sort of power draining spell? But Omnitrix feedback + the failsafes + tech not mixing with magic = Charmcaster getting Kevin’s whole ‘stuck swapping between aliens until they turn into an amalgam’ shtick. While Kevin becomes a recurring personal rival for Ben without any mutation shenanigans?

Thinking about your ocs after putting them on the shelf for a bit feels like digging through a closet full of old memorabilia no matter how long its been since you've last thought about them. It's like, damn. I remember this guy. And then you sit on the floor of your room and beam him with your brain for the foreseeable future

I woke up thinking about selkies, and am now rotating Selkie batfam. And things like even when communication between them is at its worst they still trust each other to leave their skins with each other. And them learning to trust their friends and people outside the family to start doing the same with them too y'know.
Also just rotating big seal Bruce with his lil loaf children curled up with him both at home and in a room on the Watchtower. And also rotating what types of seals each of them appear like.

There's something about that first meeting with Bruce, Terry and Powers that really gets me. Its so, so early in our titular heroes' partnership. They're still testing each other, weary about how the hell they're going to do this without someone ending up dead. But in this moment, Terry goes at Powers and the only thing holding him back is a single moment of looking at Bruce, and he backs off. This kid, who grew angry at a single comment from a high school friend or his dad being disappointed in him just a short time before, keeps his cool in front of the guy who murdered his dad. Just because just Bruce walking away says not now, not yet.
Terry obviously wants revenge on Powers, but I feel like it's not discussed much that Bruce does too. Batman is not the only legacy the Wayne's left in Gotham. Their company funded a lot of the welfare and social programs in a corrupt system, and it's an incredible amount of power in the hands of someone who doesn't care or is actively malicious. But that was the Bruce Wayne side of the mission. And the problem with that is that Bruce never really just let himself be Bruce Wayne. He had to have both or nothing, put every single part of himself into the mission.
Terry reclaims Batman, and with someone else under the cowl, Bruce finally reclaims Bruce Wayne. Powers and his hold over Gotham couldn't have been broken without Terry and Bruce working together, both in ways that would've been practically impossible without the other. When Blight dies, there's not even a question if they'll stop. Their redemption is already too far along.
I think part of the reason why Bruce kind of has this begrudging respect, this love/hate relationship with Terry's penchant for forgiveness is how it extends to him. I'd like to think that at first, Terry may have had resentment for what Bruce did with his company. If Bruce hadn't given up, Powers wouldn't have had the power to do what he did, and get away without legal consequence. But I'm not sure he would've held on to that resentment for long, or have it more then a thought in anger. Terry understands what causes someone to fall. As Terry said in the first episode, Something happened to you, and it wasn't just that you got old.
Bruce trains Terry, sees the potential in him to become Batman. But Terry also sees that Bruce could be better and pushes him to do so. He offers Bruce forgiveness and a second chance from his past failings. To make it up to the city he poured so much into and then abandoned. The really interesting thing is that Bruce doesnt offer that back, Terry's drive to be a better person is solely from himself. Bruce hates himself enough to stay in his misery, but Terry is the city's answer. So what? Life is not over. It's never too late. The push to take a risk and care again, about Batman, about himself, and about Gotham.
It starts here. When Bruce finally stands up to Powers, the figure of guilt and anger both if them share, and says no, I'm not going to let you do this anymore.

When Jyn defects and goes to be Gerrera's campaign manager, the second thing Cassian does — after asking Kay how the fuck that's even happening, with the ironclad NDAs and non-compete clauses that they all have, right, no special treatment? — is realizing how this means that Jyn unilaterally put an end to their thrice honored tradition of hooking up at the yearly Alliance Intergalactic Conference. The third thing he does is asking Kay to review the fine print again — it doesn't fly well: Kay asks him if he's doubting his legal skills and flings his law school diploma at him, frame and all, when Cassian dares to say that he took two law classes back in college so like, maybe he could have a look as well to make sure?
[more under the cut!]
He doesn't even mention that he only took Intro to Business Law and Intro to Media Law like, almost ten years ago at this point. Figures that probably wouldn't help his case after the diploma flinging and Kay shutting the door to his office right in his face. Cassian doesn't do anything else after that. Sits on his hands and waits for the shitstorm to inevitably hit.
It's 7:30am in Coruscant. He's had five hours of sleep (generous, his running average for the month is around four point five), two coffees (one iced, one hot — decadent and self-indulgent, for no reason at all) and a diploma thrown at his face (painful and honestly irresponsible as the unofficial poster boy of Mothma's campaign — Kay should know better). He's had worse mornings. Better ones, too, when Jyn was still by his side, sitting at the desk across from his instead of parsecs away after throwing away a job she'd held for nearly five years and whatever fraught relationship she'd had with Cassian.
It's fine. Cassian needs to make it to 8am to pull the first opinion polls number on this shitshow and prep Mothma for the press. Then he needs to make it to 8:35am when she'll go on live television and announce whoever the fuck as new campaign manager. Then—
Kay opens the door to his office again.
"Did Jyn mention any of this to you?"
Cassian gives him a look. Searches for something he could throw at him. The heaviest thing on his desk is his laptop and he really needs that.
"What the fuck do you think? What kind of relationship do you think we have, Kay?"
He flings a balled-up sheet of paper at Kay and misses. Kay closes the door to his office again.
7:32am. Yeah. Cassian's had better mornings for sure.

(a drabble where i cry about the tragedy of mephiles)
~400 words
-
Solaris loved them.
At first, there were few. They would dance and sing and smile in the company of a small fire they had built, and Solaris would watch from behind the embers. These humans looked so big from down here. They were fascinating, endearing, inspiring, and Solaris found comfort in them.
Few became many. They cheered and told stories and passed down those stories to even tinier humans, and Solaris would watch from the fireplaces warming their dens. These humans looked so happy from back here. They knew each and every one of their names, and Solaris would greet each new name with a sunny day.
Many became incomprehensible. They built their towers and their altars and had their festivals, and Solaris would watch from behind a burning sun. These humans looked so small from up here. They were precious, fleeting things, and Solaris loved them.
These tiny, precious, fleeting things did not need to be told they were there. They knew. They knew. And they loved them for it.
When Solaris sang, the people knew. They felt it in the tender cradle of a sunset whose warmth would linger just a few minutes longer than it would anywhere else. When Solaris sang, the cold seas would warm and calm. When Solaris sang, the shadows and terrors of night would shrink back away from scared children in their beds, and gentle mornings would greet sleepless widowers with honeyed rays and dove song.
When the humans grew greedy for power and paper, Solaris still loved them. When the humans reached for more and still more and were never satiated, Solaris took pity on them. They provided, and provided, and the humans decided this was not enough. When the humans entitled themselves to their generosity and their mercy and their love, Solaris loved them still and wept.
It rained for three days and three nights when the humans took one thing too much.
When Solaris could love them no longer, the humans knew not what they had lost. The seas could not be quelled, the shadows were not without their nightmares, the mornings were not tranquil.
Still they had their festivals for a god they had slain, still they sang and danced and drank and ate and shivered at relentlessly cold nights.
Solaris had loved them. They had loved them. They had loved them.
Mephiles did not know the meaning of love.
