Danny would like to blame Vlad for this, but it’s actually his own fault. He was the one who insisted on telling his parents about the whole half-ghost thing since everything else was going so well. He was the one who insisted on not waiting, on not using a duplicate and doing it in person. 

Which resulted in the situation they both were in now. Injured, destabilizing, and barely able to retreat through the portal. His parents hadn’t taken things well and he would have probably ended up in one of the cages or worse if Vlad hadn’t been skulking around. 

If they could make it to the Far Frozen they’d be alright, maybe. At least safe enough to not be in as much shock as he was right now and to properly take in what had happened without having to worry so much about blood loss. Ecto loss? Ugh, he was starting to get dizzy. 

Maybe a nap would be fine? Vlad was still able to fly… he thinks. Just a little nap and a moment to figure out what to do. To… something. Why is it so much harder to heal now…?

Okay this misconception keeps coming across my dash and it drives me nuts because it means people are lumping two very different versions of the DC universe under one disparaging banner. So let me just say this to get it off my chest because I'm this close to shaking somebody:

The New 52 ended seven years ago in 2016.

That started a section of DC's history called "Rebirth" in which they started bringing elements of the pre-Flashpoint continuity back into the timeline. The first changes came in a big burst called Convergence -- which is how Jon Kent effectively manifested fully formed at 10 years old -- while other reintroductions like Kon-El, Bart Allen, Cass Cain, etc. were more gradual.

The original plan, being forced through by King of Bad Decisions Dan Didio, was that after ~4-5 Rebirth would give way to another full reboot known as 5G. I could go into detail about the plans but they're honestly not important to this post because Didio was (thankfully, finally) ousted from his role as publisher early in 2020, along with something like 80% of the higher-level editorial staff. DC had a complete creative turn-over at the start of the pandemic and completely changed directions as a result. The material being developed for 5G was retooled into the hypothetical future event "Future State" to buy the new staff time to pull together their new direction.

That new direction is called INFINITE FRONTIER. It started in 2021 and THAT is the era of DC comics we're in now. Infinite Frontier is an active push to bring back the pre-Flashpoint characters, as well as some pre-Crisis ideas and characters, while also keeping the few elements of the New 52 that people actually liked (like Jason Todd's more heroic characterization) and actively pursuing diversity initiatives both in creative staff and in creations. And outside of the big events, they're making a real effort to keep these comics short and self contained in the hopes that that'll make them more accessible. So it's actually really easy, if you read comics pre-Flashpoint and dropped off, to just pick up a series and go with the flow. Anything confusing is just a Google away.

Please, please don't make the mistake of thinking modern comics are as bad as the New 52 just because some people are butthurt their ship isn't getting canonized. There have been some really good comics made in the last few years that you should totally try! Spirit World, Monkey Prince and the entire We Are Legends line has been genuinely fantastic. The new Birds of Prey is shaping up to be a ton of fun. Dark Knights of Steel is an entertaining Elseworld. Urban Legends and Brave & the Bold have done some really fun things with shorter anthology books. One Minute War was a really fun Flash family event and everything Stargirl's done recently is liable to make you cry.

I'm begging people to give these comics a chance. It's just really sad to see them being dismissed out of hand.

We all love making Clockwork the supportive grandfather or at least the pleasant acquaintance but you know what? We need more asshole Clockwork in the work. Hear me out:

Clockwork is constantly holding the events of TUE over Danny's head. He's basically all like "you need to repent for all the bad things your future self in another timeline did". To this end, Clockwork is constantly having Danny do paperwork for him or run interference with the Observants. But worst of all, he keeps sending Danny on time quests. Sometimes the quest is to help a certain historical figure. Other times, it's restoring parts of a time stream after events have knocked it out of wack. But at all times, Clockwork seems to pick the most inconvenient of times to send Danny on these missions.

It doesn't matter if Danny is in the middle of an important test or is beating back a rogue, Clockwork will just pluck him out of time. To make matters worse, the Ancient doesn't always put Danny back at the right time. Sometimes he's put back a few minutes later than he left, other times it's a couple hours later. Once Danny was put back a whole two days later. That had not been fun.

Overall, between all of that, plus school, plus fighting his rouges, Danny is absolutely tired and absolutely fed up. So the next time Clockwork sends Danny to fix a time stream, he gets a little revenge. He doesn't put the timeline back exactly how it's supposed to be. He alters tiny things here and there. Minor things that wouldn't effect the world too much. Or at least they were supposed to be minor.

Or Danny may or may not be partially responsible for flashpoint.

wait wdym dc didn't stick with Red Robin for Tim [and the de-aging thing?] what are they calling him if not RR?

He's been Robin again since 2019 😬 it's a bit more complicated but that's the gist of it.

Okay so Tim became Red Robin in the 2009-2011 series of the same name, back in the post-Crisis timeline. He was supposedly 17 at the time, by official records, and I believe he was still supposed to be 17 when the universe was rebooted with Flashpoint in 2011? (Although this doesn't really make any sense with respect to jamming the huge number of events that happened while he was Robin into like four years, if he was supposed to have become Robin at 13; he should probably at least be 18 if not 19-20).

The Flashpoint reboot took us into the New 52 (much beloathed), where nearly everyone was de-aged to some extent to keep Bruce Wayne and his generation from getting ~too old~, and also Tim Drake was mangled into a completely different character who had never been "Robin"; he'd been "Red Robin" right from the start of his vigilante career. He was de-aged to 16 for the New 52 Teen Titans series.

Teen Titans (2011) #0; as you can see, this version of Red Robin kept a version of the bandoliers and gave Tim a fancy new functional wing cape that he could fly around with.

Next, Rebirth in 2016 was a partial reboot that brought back some aspects of the post-Crisis timeline; tbh I'm not an expert on this period. What I do know is that Tim mainly appears in James Tynion IV's run of Detective Comics that ran from 2016 to 2018. During this period Tim was still called Red Robin, but he'd basically reverted to a Robin costume, with only the silly doubled "RR" symbol identifying him as not ~actually~ Robin winkwink nudgenudge, and as I understand it he was mostly back to functioning as Bruce's partner.

Tynion's run ends in Detective Comics #981 with Tim telling Bruce that he's going off to Ivy University. (He's totally lying, as Tim Drake does; Alfred notices that his tracker is going off in the opposite direction of the university, but Bruce is like "I trust him" and turns the tracker off. Yay, I guess?)

Anyway the important bit is this revealing that Tim is 'going-off-to-college' age. Which could still reasonably be anywhere from 17-19, and DC being DC, they ~refuse to confirm~

In 2019 we got the actual return of Tim as Robin (no "Red") in Brian Michael Bendis's Young Justice run, re-uniting the Core Four from YJ 1998.

As you can see, he no longer has the doubled 'RR', and he confirms that he's Robin - "Well, one of them!" I think he's supposed to be filling in as the Gotham Robin while Damian is running around the world having adventures and presumably getting into trouble, as Robins do? idk.

Tim also chases down his erased post-Crisis past at the beginning of this arc, having Zatanna magically restore (most of) his memories of the previous timeline, and, crucially, his forgotten best friend Kon, kickstarting some plot.

Tim, and all of the Young Justice crew, are notably young-looking for almost the entirety of this run. It varies based on the artist, but uh, yeah for the most part they are really damn baby-faced. This is a trend that continues with Tim and his generation of friends from this point onward, so fans have basically thrown up their hands like "is he 17 forever???? is he Edward Cullen from Twilight???? is he aging backward????"

We Just Don't Know

In any case, Bendis makes DC's next attempt to give Tim his own identity in short order, giving us the hilarious, ill-fated, and rightfully short-lived "Drake" identity.

He's back to being Robin by issue #18, hilariously switching costumes from one page to the next, although some time has apparently passed during the scene transition.

And as of the current date (July 13, 2023), Tim is still in the Robin identity, sharing it with Damian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ God knows how old he's supposed to be right now. I certainly don't.

Batman (2016) #136; the most recent issue out to date, with Tim suiting up as Robin while filling Bruce in after diving into a bunch of parallel dimensions to bring Bruce home.

As you can see, it's a Mess. The Tim Drake's Vigilante Identity question is of course a hotbed of wank and infighting, as people are torn between (a) wanting him to continue as Robin and (b) wanting him to move on and "grow up" into his own identity again (and, importantly, leave Damian as the sole Robin again, lol).

It feels like most people are for option (b), but then nobody can agree on what his next identity and costume should be. Red Robin again?? Some other bird-based identity that doesn't share a name with a major restaurant chain?? Something else entirely??

God only knows what DC is going to come up with, especially after the Drake fiasco.

Do you think that Bruce, having lost his parents very early, has a very romanticized view of his own parents? You know, when you're a kid you remember something like that but... Things sometimes are not like they looked like. I ask this because more and more adaptations are appearing in which Bruce's parents were not nice to him or were even criminals. And to a certain extent, I kind of like it because most of the rich people in Gotham are criminals to some extent and I kept wondering why the Wayne's were so good... But I don't know if that's the case in the comics' Canon timeline.

Oh yeah I definitely think Bruce idealizes his parents, and especially his father. Multiple canonical comics have shown that his parents weren't perfect, not by a long shot; they loved Bruce, but they were also busy people with issues of their own. Meanwhile, Bruce was clearly an anxious child, deeply affected by his parents' occasional neglect... and his father, Thomas, didn't much like Bruce being so "emotional". There's more than one comic in which Thomas scolds Bruce for it, and Bruce has reactions that speak so much towards a desperate need for validation from him. Let's just say, it makes a lot of sense to me that Bruce ended up exhibiting certain toxic behaviors towards his own children. And that he internalized an idea of masculinity and fatherhood that's not the healthiest, either. Someone recently asked me about Bruce's traumas in childhood, and you'd be surprised how many are connected to his parents, and specifically Thomas; here's a link if you're curious (I cite many sources for the examples above).

Overall I'd say that in canon, Thomas and Martha Wayne aren't downright shitty horrible parents, or anything of the sort. Yeah, other adaptations basically made them criminals or abusive, and suggested that Bruce just repressed the bad memories or overwrote them (like in Batman: Damned, for example) but... I think the current picture suggested by canon is more compelling. Bruce's parents loved him and they tried their best to be good to him, but they were also flawed. The darkness that Bruce exhibits on more than one occasion was there in them too, as multiple alternate Universes show. Flashpoint has Martha turn into the Joker and Thomas into a brutal and unforgiving Batman. Batman/Superman #18 shows us a world in which Thomas was killed, but Bruce and Martha survived, with Martha establishing herself as a powerful person in Gotham's underworld, targeting criminals and villains because of her obsession for keeping Bruce safe. And I think all this is how it should be, Bruce's parents should be portrayed as complex individuals with a darker side too, simply because reacting to his parents' murder the way Bruce did isn't something anyone would do. For him to react so strongly, to dedicate his life to never healing and refusing to let go... tragically, it makes so much sense that before all that, Bruce deeply craved his parents' love and affection, but wasn't getting it enough. It makes sense that, if you take a child with insecure attachment who's already deeply hurt by any sign of neglect from his parents, and you have his parents die in front of him-- the ultimate form of being left behind, being abandoned-- he wouldn't respond in the healthiest of ways. It follows that he'd end up defining himself by that trauma, and forever fear loss.

The DC Universe is a product of the New Book, A Glitch In Time

SPOILERS FOR A THE ENDING OF A GLITCH IN TIME

So, at the end of AGIT, we see a new timeline is created.

One where the Disasteroid was dealt with without the help of any of the Ghosts. Because of this, Ghosts are still hated, Danny is seen as a Villain, and there are apparently a bunch of changes to History that CW couldn't fix.

So, how did the world manage to deal with the Disastroid? Well, what if in this timeline, the Justice League finally exists?

In the original Timeline, none of the Heroes ever gained their powers, or at the very least the JLA was never formed (maybe similar to the Flashpoint timeline?).

But because of the new changes in time, there are finally actual Heroes that managed to deal with the Disasteroid without the need for Danny.

What if the JLA is wondering why Danny isn't mad at them for never helping with the Amity Park Situation, and Danny doesn't know who they are?

JLA: We are so sorry we never helped with Amity Park. We were so busy dealing with setting up the team that we never managed to get to you to help!

Danny: Who tf are you?

some designs for the evil Young Injustice team i've got in my head, here's some ideas i've got too if you want to see:

Tim is a sniper bc "evil au so Bats use guns lol." he doesn't really enjoy getting his hands messy so prefers long distance stuff rather than actual fighting even tho he's perfectly capable of hand to hand.

He's got a really lazy and childish personality, and his costume is just a Robin vest layered on top of sweats to visualize it. He also has an eccentric/batshit crazy and obsessive side but i didn't really want to draw that atm. he's also the very human protege of an Eldritch Horror Batman.

Cassie was prty much the origin of making all these designs. I had this idea that her Amazonian brace thingies are replaced with gold handcuffs bc Evil Cassie has a cop fit because yeah. She fights with a sword because i think that would be cool.

She's still the leader, and pretty much has the same personality as YJ'98 Cassie, just meaner. She curses in every instance she can, and insults her friends as a love language.

Also i think the world of this au is somewhat inspired by flashpoint, so Cassie's like, the general of WW's world domination scheme

Conner is Lex Luthor's bodyguard/ top henchman, hence the business suit/mobster vibe. He's a very moody, angsty dude, and prty violent. The collar Lex gave him has a little kryptonite in it to keep him in line. It's why he looks kinda sickly.

He's not necessarily as morally twisted as Tim and Cassie, but he's still loyal to Lex, so he commits crime because he's very ride or die, and also Luthor could very well exterminate him and make a replacement.

Bart is literally just normal Good Boy Bart who took an unfortunate wrong turn while time traveling and ended up in the evil fucked up timeline instead. Bart doesn't really wan't to be violent and hurt people, so he doesn't and usually tries to convince the others to lay off the murder when they do team stuff at the least.

He's super nervous around the others because they are absolutely insane, but also he still loves them a lot and because he's naturally chaotic like that, commits so much crime with them because friendship comes first, morals second.

I keep seeing posts on here in the DC tags that depict Billy Batson/Captain Marvel (yes, that's his name and Marvel can go cry about it) as a member of the Justice League - usually in conjunction with him acting/behaving like a child and/or Batman adopting him.

And I'm here to tell you that you've never read an appearance of Billy in your life and that you've got him all wrong.

The first big thing is that I can count on both of my hands the number of issues in which Billy's had JLA membership - pre-Flashpoint, it's a very brief period post-Crisis where he was a member of the early Justice League International. He leaves after six issues or so, and won't be a Leaguer again until the Forever Evil storyline decades later - and then again, not for very long.

I blame Young Justice for this misconception, depicting Billy as a mainstay Leaguer - when the truth is that the Elongated Man is far more of a core Justice League character than Captain Marvel ever was.

The other mistake I see made commonly is the idea that Billy is a perpetual vagabond who's ripe to be taken in by Bruce Wayne. I'm not all too familiar with the classic Fawcett continuity, but post-Crisis this isn't true.

Through his job at WHIZ Radio, Billy manages to save up for an apartment fairly quickly, and lives on his own for a while, and then under the supervision of "Uncle" Dudley, then the Wizard Shazam in human guise - until he ends up adopted by Nick and Nora Bromfield, who in this timeline are Mary Batson's adoptive parents as well.

This status quo lasts until the end of the pre-Flashpoint continuity, and then afterwards, the Bromfields are replaced by the Vasquez family, as seen in the Shazam movies.

For this one I'm blaming... I really don't know. General unfamiliarity with the character, I guess.

Which brings me to the point: if you're going to write a character, at least do some due diligence, get familiar with the character's history, and don't assume you know them based on Tumblr headcanon osmosis - because that's usually wrong.

Bette Kane: The original Batgirl and how her history never technically got retconned at all

So this is basically a repost from an old reblog I did but I doubt it's gonna get any traction so I've decided to post it here so more people can actually know about it. (I suggest actually reading what I wrote in the original thing cause there's some parts where I did at OP's comments and it'll look a bit weird here OOC)

let's actually talk about that "continuity dependence" So Bette is regarded by most of the fandom as having only been Batgirl only in Pre-Crisis (some people also think that she just never re-appeared after 1967 but that's not true since she appeared as a key character in the ending three-parter conclusion to the 70s Teen Titans run which set up Titans West). As in, Bette has only ever been Flamebird Post-Crisis and Hawkfire Post-Flashpoint.

Something to explain the whole thing about how Bette became Flamebird, Marv Wolfman decided that the Titans West three-parter was canon and this wrote about it in the Secret Origins 1989 Annual. Except Babs was the first person to become Batgirl Post-Crisis which meant it couldn't be Bette (for some reason), thus the story was rewritten so that instead of being Bat-Girl, a competitive tennis named player Bette Kane joined the Titans West under the mantle of Flamebird (where she got the name, we'll never know). So basically, Post-Crisis Bette was never Batgirl, right? At least, not until that very small duration of time when Morrison brought back Kathy Kane, right?

Below is the following panel from Young Justice Issue #21 where Bette herself confirms she has been Batgirl in the past. (after the New Titans Secret Origins issue tried to make it seem like she'd always been Flamebird the entire time). Take not that she says this whilst fighting alongside the latest Batgirl, Cass Cain

ok, so that only means the between 1985-2000, Bette was never Batgirl. Except that's not true. I especially know it's not true because of a key story that I think a lot of Batgirl stans are familiar with. Say hello to Page 10 of The Killing Joke. Also known as Bette Kane's first Post-Crisis first appearance.

Wait, wait, wait. What are you saying? Are you saying that Bette's history as Batgirl was never erased with Crisis? Are you saying that the argument that Babs, Steph and Cass stans that "oh, but she doesn't count/oh, but she was written out of continuity" isn't true? That's not possible. Oh, you toxic autumn child. It was always possible. It was merely that the spoutings of Babs stans who were angry that she wasn't the first Batgirl were taken as gospel /j (that or just how low her appearances have been throughout her creation)

Now, that just leaves us with one final era to go: Post-Flashpoint. Now unfortunately, I don't have anything from New 52 that implies she was Batgirl and I can't take the whole contracted timeline thing as concrete either so I'll just say this: Bette is in the same boat as Steph and Cass in terms of their backgrounds as Batgirl being erased in the New 52 before reclaiming their histories back.

Now I do have evidence of Bette being Batgirl Post-Flashpoint - Dark Nights Death Metal: The Last Stories Of The DC Multiverse. More specifically, the story "Together" where it shows nearly every single Titans and Teen Titans member (along with some Fearsome Five, Project Defiance and Young Justice and weirdly missing Team Titans). On the bottom left hand corner, you can see cast of the 70s Teen Titans run which includes Bette Kane as Batgirl.

And so there you go. Bette's history as Batgirl was never erased and is a legitimate member of the mantle as its originator.

If you sincerely think she doesn't count as Batgirl, I think you should go and take a deep look in the mirror and see for yourself what that speaks about you.

Bats and Time Travel

First, a disclaimer, I have only some minimal level of Booster Gold knowledge.

That being said, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that detective work isn't his strong suit, or the strong suit of most time travelers. Why would it be when they can just peak into the past and see what happened? So when something comes up and it's less straightforward than obvious bad guy needs a beating, Booster is at least smart enough to get expert help. On occasion that expert help has to go through time with him. He has to be very careful with this because no one wants another Flashpoint and he doesn't want to clean up any time shenanigans. The same goes for any other time related incident.

Bats are, of course, the go to for anyone who needs expert detective assistance. You can generally just grab any Bat and they can fill in as a detective though some are happier about it than others. Some are also more suited to time travel than others.

Batman works out well enough. He can be more or less trusted not to go off and mess with the timestream and cause some sort of catastrophe that takes forever to fix. Things get a little dicey if any case brings the Bat around Gotham or near one of his kids in the past. It becomes an exercise of restraint for both involved because B very much wants to go to his child and protect them/lecture them/hug them depending on the timeframe or at bare minimum loom over them. Booster has to sometimes physically get in the way to stop this. It doesn't always work. B is at least polite enough to fix the mess. Batman has trouble with alternate universe or alternate timeline adventures since he has to so often beat other versions of himself up and comes back extra broody. His family appreciate when he gets to the self reflection and determination to improve part after he's done brooding.

Nightwing is good to work with during time related incidents. Very professional, very cheerful, but still kept out of Gotham and very reluctantly kept from his past self because Nightwing really wants to give his past self a pep talk more often than not. Nightwing has, however, written letters for his past self that has resulted in a few branching new timelines or a mess that he was polite enough to help fix. Nightwing is allowed on alternate universe adventures which lets him give those pep talks to himself that he knew he desperately needed/wanted at those various ages.

Red Hood is not allowed on time travel cases because Jason has poor impulse control and has on more than one occasion killed someone who would commit a terrible crime in the future and ended up causing decades worth of a mess that needed to be cleaned up. He is responsible enough to fix his own messes and is only allowed now in alternate universe adventures. He's good at alternate universe adventures and they've helped him remember to rely less on hearsay and more on solid evidence.

Red Robin is Booster's favorite to work with because the kid can be snarky if caught in the right mood and the worst he has to worry about Red Robin when it comes to damaging the timeline is Red Robin taking pictures of various incidents. Red Robin is also polite enough to direct all attention Booster's way which appeases Booster's attention seeking nature. This is how Tim has the best collection of Batman tripping on his cape pictures and other similarly embarrassing incidents of his friends and family. Tim is allowed on alternate universe adventures and again returns with more pictures that his friends and family can't prove aren't them. He is developing an alternate tim support group to try to prevent additional gun batmen timelines. And, as he tells his brothers on occasion, so he can have intelligent conversation with family when Cassandra is away.

Black Bat would be Booster's favorite to work with except he's extremely intimidated by her, even more so than he can be by Batman. She has deliberately allowed herself to be seen in the past on occasion and those sightings in certain conspiracy forums as a cryptid. She's very proud of it. She is also a cryptid in other alternate timelines but is no longer allowed to go to alternate timelines after she has had to be restrained from adopting/kidnapping alternate versions of her younger self or her siblings.

Spoiler is also not allowed on time travel cases for the same reason as Jason, poor impulse control. She may have set off glitter bombs that resulted in a timeline mess almost as impossible to clean up after as the glitter. Her ability to help with alternate universe adventures is under review because, again, glitter bombs.

Robin aka Damian has worked in a timestream case once and came back with a dodo bird. Booster is glad that the kid allowed himself to be persuaded that there wasn't enough room to bring back the mastodon. He is not allowed to work on timestream cases until he can be trusted not to come back with extinct species. He is also not allowed to go on alternate universe adventures after he came back with another dragon bat he has named Desdemona.

Signal takes advantage of timestream adventures to fact check the crazy nonsense his siblings have told him. Booster likes the kid well enough and the invisibility does make things easier at times. The only reason he's not Booster's preferred Bat is because Signal is more naturally charismatic and people pay more attention to him than to Booster and also Signal needs to work on his confidence in his detective skills. He gets migraines dealing with alternate universe adventures and so tries to avoid them when possible.

Alfred has gone on ONE timestream adventure. Booster does not speak of the adventure. Alfred will just smile slightly if asked. Alfred is not allowed on alternate universe adventures because the Bats in his home universe get sullen and withdrawn without him and at least one kitchen fire will occur. His alternate selves are also possessive of their respective kitchens and do not appreciate intruders, even if the intruders are themselves.

hey i saw your answer to the ask about alfred making damian robin in battle for the cowl. while i 100% agree that is not what happened in bftc, outside of that comic i think alfred has a lot more involvement. im not sure if this is a post-crisis exclusive blog, but in secret origins (2014) #4 we see alfred's feelings on damian and his conclusion that damian would listen to no one else except his father. so alfred forges a letter from bruce that asks damian to be robin. the end of the comic shows that dick knows alfred forged that letter but imo leaves it pretty open-ended as far as dick's decision. if you ask me, i think dick talked to alfred about damian being his robin or alfred picked up that things were going to way and decided to pull this to make that transition easier for everyone. sorry is this is weirdly nitpicky or contrarian im just really a sucker for alfred and damian's relationship.

Preface: I am not a post-Crisis universe exclusive blog (far from it), but since 1) the New 52 era's attempts at dealing with the Batfamily are a mess and a pain to deal with for a variety of reasons, and 2) the post-Crisis universe was and remains the definitive interpretation for most of the Batfamily's history and the basis for their interactions with each other, it's what I tend to default to when writing meta...especially in cases where the events under discussion originally happened in post-Crisis continuity. The exceptions to that tend to be characters introduced post-Flashpoint (ex: Duke), who have no previous continuity bogging them down, and characters who have had the majority of their stories and development take place post-Flashpoint (ex: Damian).

That being said, while I am aware that Secret Origins (2014) and particularly that story exists and have read it, I tend to default to ignoring it for a few reasons:

One, it's a story whose events make little sense within either post-Crisis continuity or post-Flashpoint continuity as they otherwise exist; minimally, the timeline doesn't match up in either case.

More specifically for the purposes of writing a meta about the transfer of the Robin mantle from Tim to Damian, it rewrites Damian into the pre-Reborn era Batfamily very awkwardly by pretending he was always there. It shows a League clothes-clad Damian taking on Victor Zsasz and Professor Pyg (which he did not do until he was already Dick's Robin) while pretending that Bruce had time to try and connect with him before he "died" (which, he didn't; Damian appears in two stories prior to Battle for the Cowl—Batman & Son and Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul—and his interactions with Bruce are fairly minimal in Resurrection).

It is a clumsy attempt to integrate Damian into the pre-Batman R.I.P timeline that ignores all of the ways in which Damian's early relationships with his father and the rest of the Batfam (particularly Dick and Tim) are directly informed by the fact that he wasn't there during that time period:

I thus find it very unhelpful to use in any capacity when discussing and analyzing interactions between those characters in the aftermath of Bruce's death.

Two, while I have no love for Battle for the Cowl, Tomasi effectively ignoring it completely beyond "Gotham was in chaos following Bruce's death" doesn't sit right with me either, especially since it was referenced (even obliquely) in several other New 52-era books.

Three, I love Alfred and Damian's relationship. I think it's one of Damian's most important relationships and we should talk more about it. But I also love Alfred and Dick's relationship, so I'm not particularly enamored with a reimagining where Alfred is the one who orchestrates Damian's takeover of the Robin mantle largely unilaterally. That's not his call to make beyond a suggestion to Dick that it might be good for him. I also think it takes a lot of agency away from Dick in the one transfer of his mantle that he canonically actually has control over and undermines a big aspect of Dick and Damian's relationship development to take those decisions out of Dick's hands and give them to "Bruce."

Four, and probably most importantly: that story is never referenced before or after that issue. That origin for Damian is long gone. Its portrayal of his childhood was revamped in Robin: Son of Batman. Its reconceptualization of Damian's entrance into the Batfamily has not been acknowledged since. DC's larger refusal to acknowledge Dick and Damian's time as Batman and Robin beyond subtle references ended during the Rebirth era. New 52!Tim quite literally wasn't Tim Drake and was only restored to being himself again post-Rebirth, so 99% of the interactions between Tim and Damian from 2011-2016 have been effectively discarded as non-canon. And whenever Damian becoming Robin is referenced after Secret Origins #4, it is nearly always referenced as Dick choosing him as Robin rather than him becoming Robin "at his father's request." So there's little incentive for me to acknowledge it given that it generally appears to not be canon beyond the scope of the New 52 era of post-Flashpoint continuity.

I'm sorry that this probably isn't the answer you wanted to read, but I hope this gives you a better idea of why I specifically choose to stick to post-Crisis and post-Rebirth continuities when discussing the transfer of the Robin mantle from Tim to Damian.

hi! i read your dc timeline (fantastic job btw) and had trouble following all the titans/teen titans/young justice/outsiders stuff. so i was wondering what's the difference between those four groups/how many iterations of each group there were/who were their members?

Thanks! The differences between these groups is fairly easy to answer. The membership and iterations...not so much. I will first link to my (Teen) Titans reading order, which gives the gist of each era, and my Young Justice reading order (both preboot only).

Like any teams that last more than a few years, all four of those teams have had various iterations with various lineups. At the most basic level:

"Teen Titans" was initially a team of the original sidekicks (think Dick, Donna, Wally, etc), but has since become the default name for DC's current team of young heroes, whoever they may be.

"Titans" is specifically used for teams with that original generation of sidekicks, but now grown up as adults.

"Young Justice" is for the 90s generation of kid heroes (okay, some introduced in the 80s; think Tim, Bart, Cassie, etc), and has really only been used as a name for that group/generation.

And "Outsiders" is actually typically a Batman-led team of fully adult heroes that has the least overlap here--except for one particular iteration of the team in 2003 with young adult heroes, including Dick, Roy, and Kory.

tl;dr: The Titans and Young Justice are based on specific groups, the Teen Titans are any kid heroes, and the Outsiders are mostly irrelevant just with one major exception.

This means that:

Young Justice and the Titans have existed at the same time, one as the teen generation of Tim/Bart/etc, one as the young adult generation of Dick/Donna etc.

The Teen Titans and the Titans have existed at the same time. Though the naming is more confusing here, the idea is the same: the Teen Titans are the teen heroes (typically Tim-generation for this, maybe even younger), and the Titans are the Dick-generation young adults.

In recent years, the Teen Titans and Young Justice have existed at the same time. Young Justice remains the Tim-generation, and the Teen Titans are either an even newer, younger team (think Damian, Crush), or just DC's latest attempt at capitalizing on the famous name (typically with the characters known from the animated show: Raven, Cyborg, etc).

The Outsiders may or may not have existed in conjunction with any number of these, because they usually draw from a whole different set of potential characters.

As for the number of iterations and list of members...Yeah. Putting that under a cut.

A Pre-Flashpoint History

I’m going to thoroughly cover Titans/Teen Titans/Young Justice here, but I will be a lot less detailed on the Outsiders because I don’t know them as well.

The Teen Titans I (60s, 70s) sprang out of a team up between Dick Grayson/Robin, Wally West/Kid Flash, and Garth/Aqualad. The team was officially founded and formed by the fab five: those three, plus Donna Troy/Wonder Girl and Roy Harper/Speedy.

This team would have like a dozen other members at various points over the years, including Lilith Clay, Mal Duncan/Guardian/Herald, and Hank and Don Hall/Hawk and Dove.

They also briefly had a mostly-offscreen spinoff, the Titans West, which included such members as Gar Logan/Beast Boy, Bette Kane/Flamebird, and Hawk and Dove.

The Teen Titan got together in mid adolescence, and had a lot of cheesy adventures against such foes as Mad Mod and Ding Dong Daddy. They broke up when many members starting going off to college or otherwise moving on in life.

The New (Teen) Titans (80s), reassembled by Raven to fight her father, were half a reformation of old members (Dick, Donna, Wally, plus Gar now going by Changeling) and half new members (Raven, Koriand'r/Starfire, Vic Stone/Cyborg). As they were already all 18-19 when the team started--minus youngster Gar--the "Teen" was soon dropped from the name. Wally would end up leaving this team, and others like Joey Wilson/Jericho, Kole, and Danny Chase would join. Former Titans and allies, like Roy and Garth, would periodically show up to help out as well.

This run took a more serious tone and had a lot of character progression. It's when many of the first generation of sidekicks changed identities: Robin to Nightwing, Wonder Girl to Troia and later no codename, Speedy to Arsenal, etc. It also introduced such villains as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke (including the famous Judas Contract story with Terra), HIVE, Brother Blood, and Komand'r/Blackfire.

The original Outsiders I were also formed in the 80s, led by Batman and including iconic members like Black Lightning and Katana.

In the early 90s, the New Titans fell apart for a variety of terrible reasons and had massive shifts in membership. Half of them left or died or were completely changed; others like Leonid Kovar/Red Star, Pantha, and Miriam Delgado/Mirage joined, and the whole thing was a mess.

After a lot of spiraling, the team was almost entirely swapped to a largely new group funded by the government and led by Roy/Arsenal, including Gar, Miriam, Grant Emerson/Damage, Kyle Rayner/Green Lantern, Bart Allen/Impulse, Rose Wilson, Martix Supergirl, a maybe-new-maybe-not version of Terra, and more. This group was still under the New Titans name and in the same run, despite little member overlap. They split up when the government pulled funding.

Apparently there was another iteration of the Outsiders II briefly in the mid-90s, but I truly cannot tell you much about it. Still unrelated to the younger generations.

The Teen Titans II (mid 90s) were the first group to use the name with zero tie to the founders. Led by a de-aged Ray Palmer/Atom, this group consisted of teens kidnapped by aliens and genetically modified--Toni Monetti/Argent, Isiah Crockett/Joto, Audrey Spears/Prysm, and Cody Discoll/Risk. This run only lasted a couple years.

Young Justice I (late 90s/early 00s) sprang out of a team up between Tim Drake/Robin, Superboy (later named Kon-el), Bart Allen/Impulse, and Secret. The team shortly added Cassie Sandsmark/Wonder Girl and Cissie King-Jones/Arrowette, and later Anita Fite/Empress, Slobo, and Ray Terril/Ray. Under the vague mentorship of Red Tornado, this group had wacky coming of age adventures.

This is also when teams start to overlap:

The Titans I (late 90s/early 00s) formed out of the original (teen) Titans just really missing each other, okay? This team melded together the original fab five (Wally now the Flash; Garth now Tempest), Cyborg and Starfire of the original New Titans, Grant/Damage of Arsenal's New Titans, Toni/Argent of the second Teen Titans, and new-to-the-titans Jesse Quick. Other old Titans appeared here and there (Rose Wilson as Lian's babysitter <3), and a number of the starting group left along the way.

Events in 2003 broke up both Young Justice and the Titans simultaneously, and members shuffled around.

A few of the now-former Titans joined the Outsiders III (mid 00s), the one version of that team relevant here. The team was formed by Roy and initially led by Dick, and included members like Grace Choi, Anissa Pierce/Thunder, Metamorpho/Shift, and later Jennifer-Lynn Hayden/Jade and Kory/Starfire. This team was kind of a disaster (compliment) and the series took an adult tone with mature themes.

(Note: I dig the 2003 Outsiders, but there was no reason for them to be called the Outsiders. It’s just hollow name reuse for no reason.)

Meanwhile, the Teen Titans III (mid 00s-early 10s) formed with a combination of older members from the New Titans--like Kory, Vic, and Gar (Beast Boy again)--and younger members from Young Justice--Tim, Cassie, Kon-El Conner Kent, and Bart. Others like Raven and Mia Dearden/Speedy joined later.

Honestly I’m having a hard time cleanly describing the tone/identity of this series. It was a superheroes series about a team of young heroes/sidekicks. Idk. It exists and ran for a long time.

After the Infinite Crisis in 2006, everything in DC jumped One Year Later. Over the course of that missing year, the Teen Titans had a variety of rotating, mostly second-string members. But that’s really just briefly seen in 52 and never had any real appearances, so whatever.

After One Year Later, the team did have a major shake up. All the young adult members left, leaving just the teens, and many new members joined. And left. And joined. And left. I think Cassie is the only consistent member. There is a lot of turnover in the back half of this series, but some Teen Titans here include: Rose Wilson/Ravager, M’gann Morzz/Miss Martian, Eddie Bloomberg/Kid Devil/Red Devil, Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, and Amy Allen/Bombshell.

This constantly-rotating team would last all the way until the New 52.

Meanwhile the older generation kept switching:

The Outsiders also had a shake up after One Year Later, when it turned out they were all now fugitives for accidentally maybe doing some bad stuff. (Most important to me, Roy left so what is even the point now. “Dick is still there,” yeah but he’s not being a bitch (entertaining) anymore; he’s just grumpy.) Much of the team was gone by now, but they added Owen Mercer/Captain Boomerang Jr and Katana.

Only like a year (irl) later, Batman decided he wanted this to be his team again, and almost the entirety of the team swapped out for the Outsiders IV, which was more like the original/standard line-up, with only a few from the unusual 2003 iteration.

With the Outsiders a team of real adults again, many of the young adults were freed up. And you know what that means! Titans II (late 00s): these friends truly cannot stay away from each other. It’s a combination of the original team and the NTT: Dick, Roy (now Red Arrow), Donna, Wally, Kory, and Vic.

And also Gar and Raven kept moving between the Titans and the Teen Titans, because DC couldn’t decide how old they were supposed to be after Raven’s de-aging.

Despite the great line-up, these Titans were not to last, as DC was making a lot of changes and half the characters had other things to do. Dick had to replace a missing Bruce as Batman. Wally was always over-taxed as the Flash on the JLA and the Titans. Roy’s daughter was killed, leading him to relapse, in what everyone naively thought was the worst writing Roy would ever have before the New 52 proved just how much worse it could get. The team fell apart.

Slade Wilson/Deathstroke swooped in to form the Titans: Villains for Hire (early 10s) a team of villains and morally grey characters like Cheshire, Osiris, and [deep sigh] downward spiral Roy (now Arsenal once again), all with their own agendas.

(Note: it’s dumb as hell that this team was called the Titans. It was even more hollow name re-use. Come on, DC, just make up a new name for once.)

In the very end, the villain part split and there was a glimmer that a healing Roy and a resurrected/not evil (long story) Joey Wilson might make a new Titans team, an abandoned idea that lingers in my mind to this day...

But t’was not to be because--

A Prime Earth History

Flashpoint blew up and rebooted the entire universe.

This recap will be shakier, as I have not read anything from the latter part of it. (Still trapped in the New 52 over here.) Also I’m going to stop recapping the Outsiders entirely, sorry.

In the New 52, all history and most of what made DC good was erased. The Titans had never existed.

The (New 52) Teen Titans IV (early/mid 10s) were, in their continuity, the first team of that name. This team included rebooted, in-name only versions of Tim Drake [redacted]/Red Robin, Cassie Sandsmark/Wonder Girl, Kon-El/Superboy, Bart Allen Bar Torr/Kid Flash, Kiran Singh/Solstice, Miguel Barragan/Bunker, etc.

The theme of this run was “bad writing” and the tone was “awful”. Somehow it lasted the entire New 52 and into Rebirth.

My knowledge is really, really shaky after this:

The (Rebirth) Titans III (late 10s) formed with the original generation finally reunited, after fans revolted in the face of DC trying to erase Wally West from existence. This team had the fab five and fellow original (Teen) Titan, Lilith/Omen.

Then the (Rebirth) Teen Titans V (late 10s) formed, with a bunch of iconic young adult characters like Kory, Vic, and Gar, plus teenager Wallace West/Kid Flash (not that one; there are two Wally Wests now) and Damian Wayne/Robin. Apparently Damian is the leader of this team despite being the only child on it and. why. I don’t understand.

At some point that team revamped and became entirely a team of youngsters like Damian, Wallace, the new Red Arrow/Emiko Queen, and Xiomara Rojas/Crush.

Young Justice II (late 10s/early 20s) reformed after a while, with the universe slowly restoring bits from New Earth. This team was Kon, Bart, Tim, Cassie, and a few new peers like Jinny Hex and Teen Lantern.

The (Teen?) Titans Academy (early 20s) I believed formed with the idea of older, established Titans like Vic, Donna, Kory, etc mentoring a whole bunch of very new young heroes who I’m looking at the wiki list for and boy that’s a lot of names. Huh. I think this one is still ongoing?

Which means we have reached the present, and my list now ends.

I wonder if this makes the top 5 for my longest posts.

The New Golden Age Continues...

Beginning in October, DC will be releasing three six-issue mini-series featuring founding JSA members Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, and Wesley Dodds.

Alan Scott: The Green Lantern by Tim Sheridan (Flashpoint Beyond) and Cian Tormey (Superman: Son of Kal-El) will be Alan Scott’s first solo title since 1949. Through a twist in the timeline, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern revisits and recontextualizes the origins of the first Green Lantern through the lens of our modern understanding of the man. The story, which begins in the 1930s, is about an old flame – the kind that burns eternal – and the sometimes head-on, single-track collision of our personal and professional lives. This is Alan’s coming-of-age, in which he must embrace the man he is, to become the hero he’s meant to be. In the end, he’ll have gained a greater understanding of himself and his gifts – as he unlocks a new, previously unknown ability that could make him the most powerful Green Lantern in existence!

Jeremy Adams (The Flash) and Diego Olortegui (Aquaman: The Becoming) are teaming up for Jay Garrick: The Flash. It’s hard being a parent, especially when your kid is a speedster! Jay Garrick has been reunited with his long lost daughter, Judy, but figuring out how to connect with her is proving to be difficult. They’ll need to work to find common ground when a mission that started in Jay’s early days as the Flash comes roaring to today. But will The Flash and The Boom be able to thwart a plan that’s been in the works for decades?!

Wesley Dodds: The Sandman by Rob Venditti (Superman ‘78) with art from Riley Rossmo (Harley Quinn) shows the titular character as a pacifist. He has given up on the hope of a peaceful world, but he hasn’t stopped believing that people can be better to each other, if they’re only given the right tools. Possessing a scientist’s optimism and romanticism, he is convinced that humanity can invent cures for its own ills. Having learned about the battlefield horrors of World War I from his father, he sought to create a sleep gas that would allow for “humane” warfare. During his research, he recorded all of his attempts in his science journal - even those with horribly deadly consequences - swearing to never show them to the world. Now his journal has been stolen, and he must find the culprit and stop them before his deadly mis-inventions fall into the arsenals of the belligerent nations threatening to pull the United States into the next world war.

Kara Zor-El has come a long way, she's been through so much within the last few years, fought through so many struggles in her life as both Supergirl and her secret identity Linda Lang.

(A/N: Before you say anything about the image directly above... I get that she's... Y'know? But do I blame you??? I don't think I should) 

But she didn't spend it alone, by her side, was a young man from the planet Xola which had a bad history with Kryptonians as they once tried to conquer Xola but the Xolanians fought back with dignity and strength, once a powerful empire before many years later, the Xolanians would erupt in a civil war, two factions, fighting for control over the planet as the planet, slowly became uninhabitable for them all due to the war effort.

The man named Y/N, a young but grizzled and traumatised veteran of the Xolanian civil war, came to Earth near the end of the war, to live peacefully and in isolation before he found himself in more conflict regarding the humans and the many aliens that thrived on Earth.

He assumed the war was lost... The last thing he ever knew was that... Xola was becoming uninhabitable to support life... He grieved over the loss of his planet, of losing the war...

Until... He would meet someone who would change his life forever, along with changing hers.

Batman/Superman: The Supergirl From Krypton

If it wasn't for the man called Superman, Y/N probably wouldn't be where he is now, at first he didn't trust the Big Blue since he was a Kryptonian but after seeing what he stood up for, he slowly began trusting him a bit more, as he began to trust a few Humans, one of them being Lois Lane, though he would still keep himself isolated and hidden, keeping to himself since he doesn't trust anyone else but the Man of Steel and a few of his close ones, he was introduced to his cousin Kara Zor-El, to help her adapt to Earth a bit better and the rest is history. after he vowed to help her understand a bit better.

She did go through some struggles, being practically kidnapped by Wonder Woman to be trained by the Amazons instead of Kal and Y/N teaching her, she already didn't like Batman since she thinks he didn't have a heart at all, thinking he was being an ass to her but overall... The only stranger who didn't try do anything to her was Y/N, who she actually enjoyed talking with and was a great conversationalist.

He didn't like the fact that Kara was forced to train on Themaskira, he always thought that 'freedom was everyone's right', he always thought that through his past leader, this? This wasn't freedom, she was forced but still... He couldn't do anything about it

But... This wouldn't really last as long, she gained the attention of Apokolips, specially Darkseid and with the attack on Themaskira from a cloned army of doomsday which was a diversion to distract everyone, Darkseid would order Kara's capture for she was to be manipulated into becoming a servant for him which unfortunately, they would succeed in doing so.

Y/N wanted to rescue her, no matter the cost, no matter how far he would have to go to get her back, thanks to Big Barda, they would find a way to travel to Apokolips.

After the two cousins would fight, in the nick of time of Y/N's arrival with Batman distracting Darkseid with his smarts, somehow... Y/N managed to break the somewhat brainwash on Kara's mind, carefully using his words, before she would collapse on the ground, Kal would bring her back with the others upon Darkseid agreeing to let Kara free... That day... Y/N grew to respect Batman with his smarts, outsmarting even a New God? That was something he never thought a Human could ever do.

Upon the end, with Kara back and it looked like she was going to head back with her cousin, she had one talk with Y/N as she recognised a symbol on his armour.

"How're you feeling?" he asked

"Still fuzzy but... I'm okay, I'm here because I just wanted to say before I go... Thank you for... What you've done for me Y/N ~" she smiled as she ran her hand on his shoulder plate where a somewhat recognisable symbol was seen - "I know this symbol, it belonged to the Xolanians, you're Xolanian? I know what the Kryptonians did to your people through my mother, Alura. I was so surprised you put so much of your trust in me despite... What happened between our people, I'm so sorry for what happened back then" she kept her eyes on the symbol, the two swords that stood for Unity, Hope, Prosperity.

She looked up at him, noticing his sorrowed face, thinking he was hurt by this, she immediately apologised... Thinking she shouldn't have mentioned it.

"No Kara, it's not that... I... I don't think I should talk about it here" he said with sorrow, with a pain aching in his heart.

She unexpectedly hugs him, taking him by surprise... He's never had a hug in a long time, not since... The Fall of Xola.

"I understand you don't want to talk about it, you're not ready to talk about it and that's fine! Really, it is" she seemed to console him, which shocked him but... He smiled, accepting the hug by placing his hands on her back.

The time came for her to go back with her cousin, he thanked Wonder Woman and Batman for helping him... Including Y/N, for helping her extensively... He already saw that Y/N trusts her and he couldn't be more proud.

Though returning from the Fortress of Solitude where Kara would try on a costume she could wear to use her powers and abilities for good, her 'Supergirl' outfit, she admitted she wasn't sure about being worthy to wear it, to bear the House of El glyph, feeling ashamed of her action when she was brainwashed, her cousin would dismiss it, telling her that whatever evil she displayed, was put into her by Darkseid.

 They would soon return to the Kent Family Farm where Darkseid was waiting for them, waiting to strike the two super cousins off guard.

However... He was bested in the end, especially with Wonder Woman's arrival and Kara reversed the Motherbox tech, activating the boom tube before Darkseid was sent through it, far out within the cosmos...

 Upon that day... Kara made a decision... Remembering what Y/N once told her

"We only become Heroes to not only protect others, to protect freedom, it is a huge responsibility that requires strength, dignity and discipline so we can fight for a better tomorrow... I was told that once, and I haven't forgotten it since that day, but overall... I see that in you Kara, just a little bit, but it's your decision to become a Hero or not, to take that responsibility, to turn it... Into opportunity, turning it... Into something... Beautiful"

On Paradise Island, Superman would introduce 'Supergirl' to the superhero community.

"To be honest. I'm not sure I've earned the right to use that name... Or to even wear this uniform. But I'm hoping, with all your help. I'll grow into it" she gave a little speech to the community as she was cheered on, making her smile but as she looked closer... She couldn't see Y/N, or see him anywhere for that matter.

It was at this time... He was at his spot where it was all peaceful... Quiet... No one around him or anything... Just... The calm ocean, the sun set... All of it... Reflecting on the past... His past... Unescapable memories.

It wasn't long till he heard someone land close to him, shaking him out of those memories, he turned to his right and saw... Kara, in her Supergirl outfit, stunned by her look as she smiled at him.

"Hi Y/N, what'd you think?" she flaunted her cape, doing a little spin afterwards as he stood up from where he sat, smiling at her as she allowed him to show off her costume, from front to back, seeing the House of El glyph on her cape all coloured a yellowish gold much like her cousin's.

"It looks... Good, amazing... Super" he cracks an accidental pun in there, making her giggle.

"Earth humour huh?" she giggled before sitting down with him.

"Didn't mean to crack one a pun there but..." he chuckled as he sat down beside her, the two continuing their conversation as her cousin watched from a distance, happy she's getting along with someone who was her first friend here on Earth.

(Supergirl: Girl Power)

Kara's friendship with Y/N bloomed into something special, it grew closer as the weeks went by, he patrolled with her and as she was already dealing with a situation, involving getting spied on, he vowed to help her deal with this situation.

 At their usual hang out spot where the two were alone together, watching the calm oceans which also appeared to calm Kara's thoughts when she would be feeling down.

She wanted to ask him about Xola, but knowing others have asked him about it, he would avoid talking about it if it was mentioned, almost like he was hiding a hidden pain behind the armour, behind the battle mask, he would briefly mention certain things but... If it was anything about why he was on Earth and not Xola... He played it off like it was nothing.

Though he briefly told her that the Kryptonian invasion was the last time he saw his father, a solider for the Xolanian Empire, he was killed during the Kryptonian, Xolanian War. Where he would have to grow up... An orphan no long after his mother's sudden passing before he was took in by his warrior Uncle, promising he'd teach him like his brother would've, at the required age, it wasn't enough to clear the unanswered question.

She wanted to ask him so badly especially since he'd briefly mentioned it back on Themaskira, but she talked about Krypton to him, why would he not do the same with his own planet?

Kara knew he was hiding pain, she knew he was still grieving, much like she was about Krypton's destruction.

"So... I hate to ask but... How did you end up here on Earth? I know you've been asked so many times but..." she looked at him as they both stared down at the ocean in front of them, the view being perfect.

He looked at her, with eyes that turned sorrow, he had a feeling Kara would ask him next, he felt she wanted to ask him for weeks, she sensed his pain by looking at him as he sighed, looking back at the ocean.

"It was a war... A civil war between our people that ravaged for centuries, two factions, fighting for control ~" he broke his silence, as Kara looked a little shocked at this - "I fought in this war, I was a warrior scout for the Xolar Resistance but... This war... It tore Xola apart, it tore many of us apart... I still... Have the scars to prove it, as with war ~" he took a moment to catch his words as he then looked at her with sorrow - "it can make a planet burn, make it... Unsuitable for life to progress... Xola became Uninhabitable for life to thrive ~" the look on Kara's face after hearing the truth behind his arrival here to Earth said it all, she wasn't expecting to hear this from him, to know she wasn't the only one who lost a planet from destruction, Y/N also went through the same pain... But worse... It was due to a war, a war HE fought, a war... He lost - "We were forced to fan out to the cosmos, abandon Xola, where my shuttle would get knocked off course, I was in cryogenic sleep during this time, and would find myself here... On Earth, knowing that I was alone... To bear with the loss of both the war and Xola and with that? I think... I'm the last of my species, the last... Of the Xolanians" he finished, his voice beginning to get shaky a little from his last words, he looked away, closing his eyes before he felt something touch him...

A hand... On his, Kara's hand grasped his, knowing they both share similar pain, similar scars, similar... Grief.

She may have Kal-El... But Y/N doesn't have that, he doesn't have family left, nor anyone for the matter, it was where the two embraced in a deep hug, helping him grieve through the pain just like he did with her.

 Deep down, he knew he needed this, someone to recognise he was keeping the pain hidden, someone who knows that type of pain... And Kara was the perfect individual to share his past with.

Both went through the same thing almost, he trusts her so much after all.

They've been by each others side since then, Y/N helped her fight her demons, her Dark self aka Dark Supergirl at one point due to Lex Luthor using a form of Black Kryptonite, let's just say, things were a little divided between Y/N and the two Kara's.

One played with his feelings while the other, the one Y/N knew, was still there by his side, even he knew who the real Kara was after her dark twin tried switching up costumes to confuse him and the others.

Though she would later infuse herself back up with her evil 'twin', she was struggling to find herself but she got help, from both her cousin and Y/N... He didn't want to leave her side if it meant anything at least.

When she joined the Teen Titans for a brief time, he supported her, though her membership with them didn't really last as long as it should have, he would still support her either way, after all? What are friends for right?

However... Kara had feelings for him after the whole Power Boy situation (despite Y/N warning her that Power Boy shouldn't be trusted, he knew something was wrong about him and he was right in the end, Power Boy tried manipulating Kara, which almost worked but ultimately failed, resulting... Him getting a boot up his man-parts by Kara in deep space), where Y/N would also develop deep feelings for her too, their first kiss eventually happening within the clouds above, where they both loved the quietness up there.

Through the Infinite Crisis charisma, thinking she was killed by the Zeta Beam, only for her to come back a year later to bad news of Superboy's death (who comes back later on) and her cousin powerless (he regains his powers later on), but she came back to a relieved Y/N, hugging her pretty tight as he missed her so much, though she briefly lost her memories about being sent to the future where she was with the Legion of Superheroes within the 31st century (which she would found out it was actually Earth-Prime's 30th century, not her Earth's future) he revealed to her that she was gone for over a year, prompting in her showering him in kisses.

Through looking for a secret identity to roam as a normal Human with Y/N's help (as he's done it for a while) to trying out to join the Outsiders with Captain Boomerang II's request, Y/N supported her but ultimately found out that she was being tested rather than trusting her which almost got Y/N and another member into a fight with Nightwing getting in between them, Kara would instead not join the team upon knowing she was being tested.

But after Breaking the Chain, Cry for Justice (where she joined a Justice League group for a brief time) and the Dark Crisis? Their relationship was taken to the next level after the many tiring months they spent together fighting side by side...

Where she would rock his world for the first time, and her own world too, knowing she was all his and only his for as long as it could last.

Within Kara's apartment, her outfit was seen on the floor, first her high-knee boots as it went from that to her yellow loose belt and blue skirt, to the trousers Y/N wore with his integrated suit of armour, to his shirt as the device that activates his armour on command, is seen on the living room table.

Eventually... It leads up to panties and boxers on the floor to Kara's crop top and attached cape were on the floor beside the bed where Kara's pleasured moans were heard as she rode on top of her boyfriend, his cock penetrating her clitoris.

This discovery was named New Krypton by Kara and was released and re-sized to normal size where it would reside on Earth for a while, she was so happy to see her people alive, to re-connect with so many she missed, to once again, to roam the now joined cities Kandor and Argo, as she didn't want to spend it alone she wanted Y/N to experience it with her, to step foot in a Kryptonian which made history as he was the first ever Xolanian to step foot within it.

She got to meet her birth parents once more, Alura and Zor-El, where she revealed her relationship with Y/N, the Xolanian Warrior, at first they were a little sceptical but upon meeting him, their scepticism went down the drain.

"Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend, Y/N L/N, the Xolanian Warrior" she kindly introduces them to him, she wrapped her arm around his after he approached.

"Though our kind and Xolanians don't have a very fond history with each other, we're so sorry for what you've been through, Kara has told us all about you, and we're so happy for her, which we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for protecting her, for being there for her when we could not" Alura greeted him as he smiled at her greeting.

"You don't need to thank me, you should thank Kal-El and your beautiful Daughter here, if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have never seen Kryptonians differently as I did before" he switched it round as Kara kissed him on the cheek.

But as all things do go well, it doesn't stay forever...

Under General Lane's orders (Lois Lane's father), with the amount of Kryptonians living on Earth and the fear of a possible alien invasion from the Kryptonians, he ordered both Reactron and Metallo to invade Kandor with Gold Kryptonite, and slaughter as many Kryptonians they could find, that included Zor-El, this was Kara's biggest tragedy, which the following events afterwards, changed everything in her life.

(Zor-El's death)

Due to this tragedy... Alura used Sunstone technology and uprooted Kandor out of Earth into outer space and placed into geosynchronous orbit, directly opposite of the Earth itself.

The US Government took action by barring all Kryptonians (except Superman) from staying on Earth, that included Supergirl, which enraged Y/N but he chose to stay on Kandor, to protect the remaining Kryptonians living on Kandor where Kara would have to stay... But not for long.

Zor-El's death also struck Y/N hard, before his death, Y/N wanted to ask her a very important question which involved a Kryptonian made ring, he went to Zor-El and Alura about it first, he was given the green light after telling them how much Kara meant to him, wanting to ask her the biggest question of his life, to marry on New Krypton under Kryptonian Standards, but unfortunately, those plans were cut due to the following events afterwards.

(Superman: War of the Supermen)

Things got worse after Zor-El's death, there was the Hunt for Reactron, Superwoman's appearance who was in fact General Lane's daughter Lucy, to everything leading up from New Krypton's Last Stand to the complete War of the Supermen where New Krypton was destroyed, the Military Guild of Krypton led by Zod was ready to invade Earth, an enraged Supergirl who was furious after Alura's death at the hands of Reactron, of Luthor, blamed Earth for New Krypton's destruction and with carrying the flag of Krypton, she raced toward Earth to join the war effort...

Only to be stopped by Y/N and Superman, who she attacked in a blind rage, angry at the both of them from preventing her to join the war effort.

"Do you have any, ANY idea what war can do to people? The amount of death and destruction it can cause!?" he arms his weapon, charging it up as it trilled extensively as he gets ready to defend himself once more.

They had been fighting for a while throughout New Krypton's moon Callisto, his armour was torn a little but with no effort, Kara on the other hand, enraged and full with anger, had just finished fighting her cousin, only to be confronted by Y/N again, she was enraged by such action against her, against avenging her own people.

"OUT OF MY WAY Y/N! I WON'T LET YOU GET IN MY WAY LIKE MY COUSIN DID!! THEY NEED TO PAY!!! ~" she shouted at him, her eyes lighting up red, floating in the air as she was about to attack her boyfriend - "YOU SHOULD BE BY MY SIDE! NOT THEIR'S!!!" she was upset and angry with him, how could he betray her? Side with Earth by defending them from the crimes they committed to New Krypton's destruction?? From the many Kryptonians that were on New Krypton that got wiped in an instant due to the Gold Kryptonite Nuke placed inside Reactron.

"Is this what Alura and Zor-El would want? Earth destroyed? Purged? Earth is my home Kara! Our home!! Don't you remember that War destroyed my world... I won't let another world fall the same, I don't want to fight you, but if you must... Then so be it, if you're going to join the war effort to attack Earth? Then you'll have to get through me first" he hesitantly aimed his cannon at her - "One way... Or the other, one of us... Will fall, but do not let your anger blind you from who you are Kara Zor-El, this isn't what you are, Zor-El and Alura would never want you to become like Zod, or Ursa" he slightly growled as his mask forms back up, showing his war side to her as she began to realise what she was doing was wrong.

She looks at him, realising he's physically trying to defend himself from her, his words get through to her head, she looks at the damage she inflicted upon him and her cousin, she looked at him and knew he was serious, she never saw this side of him before, battle mask formed up, him scolding her and he's NEVER scolded her before which gave her a reality check.

In that moment... She breaks down, tears fall down her face immediately as she dropped the flag of Krypton, blaming herself for New Krypton's destruction.

"It's all my fault, I brought Reactron to New Krypton, I caused it all!!" she shouted through tears, weeping at herself as Y/N's cannon powered down, his battle mask deactivating as he kneels down to her level and pulls her in, she digs her face into his chest as she lets it all out, blaming herself over and over.

"Don't blame yourself my Little Sunshine, none of this is your fault. They played us for fools, General Lane is attempting to wage war to hail himself a War Hero in the Human's eyes, he doesn't care what happens to them ~" he pulled back, looking at the teary eyed Kara as more tears fell down, but he wiped them away with one motion of his thumb - "Someone tried doing the same on Xola, look what happened afterwards... Earth is in danger, Zod and the Military Guild will wreak havoc if we don't stop them... But revenge will not bring back what is lost, you know I've been through that, you're not alone" he assured her as she sniffled and gloomed, looking at him with regret and pain.

She knew he was right, he'd been through war, he's seen death and the destruction it would bring, she knew if they didn't stop Zod and the Military Guild, Earth will be in total chaos and uninhabitable for Human kind, and that revenge won't bring New Krypton back, nor her mother, nor her father.

"I love you Kara, you know I'll never leave your side, no matter happens, we'll get through this loss together, let it fuel our strength" he smiled, wiping away a few more of Kara's tears.

"I love you too Y/N" she responded through a sob, hugging him tightly, not wanting to let go of him... She needed this consolation from him, especially after the death of her birth mother and the destruction of New Krypton

She sniffles a little more before rubbing her arm across her eyes to wipe away the remaining tears after breaking the long, comforting hug, as his words replayed in her head from earlier, of what war did to his world, refusing to let Earth fall the same.

Deep down... She viewed Earth as her home too, though not many wanted her around, she still viewed it as home, thanks to Y/N and her cousin, along with her friends and Earth family.

"Okay. Okay, You're right Y/N ~" she began to get up - "What do we do now?" she asked him, fists clenched.

"We go to Earth and do everything we can to defuse this insanity until we find an answer to all of this, and save lives in the meantime ~" he stood up with her - "As I said before, I won't let another planet go to ruin over a war, a war that can bring chaos and devastation to the Human race, that I swear deep within my soul, will not happen this day, or any other day... They all must be stopped... No matter the cost ~" he clenched his fist as his battle mask activates - "I have a shuttle I can use for transport to Earth, Zod and his forces would have arrived by now, we must make haste!"

They would join the war effort, which during on the way to Earth, the sun would be turned into a red sun with Superman, Supergirl and the remaining Kryptonians, struggle to breathe in space, Y/N managed to save Kal and Kara by bringing them into his shuttle, but the rest? He was too late, he only managed to save a few and that was it.

This managed to enrage Y/N, countless dead for nothing, Kryptonian or not, he knew their deaths were pointless, all to stop Zod and the others though the sun would revert back to normal not long after thanks to Thara-Ak-Var's (aka Flamebird) sacrifice to turn the sun yellow once more.

Once arriving to Earth to stop the war from tearing Earth apart, Kal went to wait for Zod and his followers at Metropolis while Kara and Y/N went to the white house to stop Ursa from killing the US President...

Though Y/N was questioned about almost killing Ursa upon seeing Kara being strangled to death and finding out that it was Ursa who killed Y/N's father during the Kryptonian Invasion of Xola, in a controlled rage, he fought violently against her, like he did during the Xolanian Civil War, she taunted him about his father, which would only prove to be her last, deadly mistake as he was not like the Xolanians she fought before, underestimating him even, before he could pull the trigger as she wanted him to, he stopped himself with the help of the rest of the Super Family that arrived in the nick of time, as this fight quite literally pushed him over the breaking limit, as he was reminded of his time in the civil war. This day changed him forever.

Near the end, Kara would've killed General Lane if both Y/N and Lois hadn't intervened, though he killed himself in the end rather than face justice for his crimes.

A funeral would be held for those who died on New Krypton, a Kryptonian flower was placed on its remains as a teary eyed Supergirl would fly off and arrive back on Y/N's shuttle, embracing him once more...

"Let it all out, let it all out" he cooed, hugging her tightly as she wouldn't let go of him again... If she was going to grieve, he wouldn't let her grieve alone.

After all of that? Kara and Y/N's lives had changed forever, she would stop being Supergirl at one point, going Linda Lang full time, ditching her birth name: Kara Zor-El, though both Lana and Y/N convinced her to pick up the mantle of Supergirl and Kara Zor-El again upon the threat of Bizarrogirl.

She admitted to miss flying and carrying Y/N when she flew around Earth, it was something rather special for the both of them.

Posing like her cousin once did - "Okay, I gotta admit...

...I missed this"

(A/N: Does anyone else find this part of the comic pretty cute when she poses like that? She's such a bean in the New Earth comics at times, literally my favourite incarnation of the Maiden of Might, the Girl of Steel and I... L O V E it, plus... I honestly just wanna hug her so bad, she's been through so much pain as it is and I feel so bad, if only I could give her a hug to tell her it's alright. Believe it or not fellow readers... I refer to her at times, especially with pain and loss, feeling like an outsider to the world because you're different than everyone, and they pick on you because you're different, especially since I'm Autistic. Without her? Without Kara Zor-El/Supergirl? I don't even know where I'd be right now)

She missed being Supergirl, she missed saving lives, kicking ass and taking names and she was happy to pick up the outfit again.

After so... She agreed to take Y/N flying once more.

"I missed taking us up here" Kara said while looking up toward the sky, taking herself and Y/N up into the clouds.

"I did too, this is where we had our first kiss believe it or not" he chuckled, Kara looked at him and could only smile at the sudden call back of a memory.

"I've never stopped thinking about that, which reminds me" she giggled as she drew her face closer to his, connecting her lips on his no long after, sharing a deep kiss as Kara remained stationary above the clouds, holding her one true love.

"I love you so freaking much y'know that?" Y/N murmured, making the Girl of Steel giggle as she stole another kiss from him.

"I know... I love you more than anything in this world Y/N ~" Kara spoke through the kiss, breaking it to speak more clearly so she could speak with to her heart's intent about him - "thank you so much for being there for me when I needed it most, I don't know where I'd be without feeling your touch, to hear your voice, your heartbeat, to see your presence and when you're not around, I try to listen for your heartbeat, and I worry so much when I can't hear it because I'm not whole without you, I'm not myself... I'm so lucky to have someone like you who loves me the same, who I can always wake up beside and see your eyes the first thing in the morning... You're like... The Sun to my Flowers, the Yin to my Yang, my Badass Warrior, because I adore you" Kara smiled as brightly as she could with her boyfriend grinning at her statement, which resulted in them kissing deeply once more, as the stars and moon shined bright like a diamond, setting up the perfect scenery for the two love birds.

She still blamed herself for New Krypton's destruction and even dreamt of being back on it, Y/N would deny that it was her fault, though she didn't want to admit it... She knew he was right, it wasn't her fault still, but to use that memory to keep moving forward, knowing that's what Alura and Zor-El would want her to do.

she felt so lucky to have someone like Y/N by her side, she felt special to him and that's all that mattered...

(Legion of Superheroes... Again?)

At this point in time after the whole Bizarrogirl situation was dealt and heading out of Bizarro-World with a rocket ship and ultimately for Kara, she... AGAIN, went to the future. 

But this time, it wasn't the 30th century she was familiar with and she wasn't alone, Y/N was with her still after the Bizarro-World situation, The Legion welcomed the two in, Kara decides with Y/N agreeing to stay in the future and work for the Legion for a while, both given a Legion Flight ring but he didn't use it, he had other alternatives.

Kara would visit the Superman Museum with her boyfriend, where she finds out how she dies, facing off against the most powerful threat in the entire universe, the Multiverse to be exact, the threat isn't revealed but she has a sense of what it could be, she doesn't tell him this but finds out either way, promising she won't die alone, he'll be there with her.

They both would be interrupted by Satan Girl, an Alien Death Goddess that was drawn to Earth when Brainiac-5 experimented on a statue offered up to her. Together with Brainy, they put a stop to Satan Girl, even going as far as going back within the timestream to stop her.

Not long after, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad (who made a friend in Y/N and give Lightning Lad the nickname: 'Sparky'), Cosmic Boy and Brainiac-5 would bring Supergirl and Y/N back to the present, where Kara revealed to her boyfriend that - "This is the happiest I've been in years, I love going on these types of adventures with you, it's something... Different for us, and I love it" she would kiss him, before flying up into the portal with carrying her one true love. Saturn Girl would wipe Kara's knowledge of knowing how she died, along with Y/N's knowledge of knowing it too.

Both Supergirl and Y/N would go back to the future sometimes, to help the Legion with any issues but one of them... Wasn't a pleasant day to visit... For both the love birds.

Unfortunately... Lightning Lad would die due to his heroic sacrifice, both Kara and Y/N showed up for the funeral.

"Sparky, you are amongst the bravest of us all, I wished I would've been there to fight side by side with you as you reminded me of another back on Xola, If I could give my life to bring you back, I would... But... You deserve to rest, you need it... As a wise spokesman said... Till All Are One" he gave a speech to his friend, which moved the hearts of many that were there for the funeral, Kara would give a similar speech too.

(Their War, Our World)

(A/N: This is a huge Transformers reference I just dropped, holy moly this phrase 'Their War, Our World' hasn't been used in years and I mean all the way back in 2007, I wish we could go back to witness it all over again)

(PS: I might make a full out story out of 'Their War, Our World', but what do you think? Should I do it at some point in the near future?)

Months would pass by along the way, Kara would join the new Justice League of America with Wonder Woman's vote to allow her to join, also allowing Y/N to join not long after though he wasn't very sure at the time but... He couldn't resist when Kara urged him to join up, even going as far as putting on her puppy dog eyes to convince him which worked...

All the way to the formation of the Supermen of America where Kara was the founding member of.

It was also occurrent that a Multiversal event happened where heroes and villains alike from different timelines, continuities, universes all grouped up since the entire Multiverse was threatened by one entity and its own army, this entity had a thousand names, it spoke with many voices but it only spoke one name...

And its goal was to Shape the entire universe... Which would've ended everything at once.

It was not recorded of what exactly happened, but the only thing that came out of it... Was that Supergirl survived... Xolanian Y/N's Supergirl lived, though it was said that she would die within her timeline but... sometimes... Fates can be broken.

At least two months after the huge event that transpired, Y/N would receive an unexpected recorded message, from an old friend and leader of the Xolar Resistance - Hyrix Maximus.

"Y/N, I pray this message reaches you, though the war rages on, not all hope is lost, we now have the means to revive Xola and turn the tides of the war, if you hear this message, I have a new task for you, establish a base on Earth in secret, so we can rebuild and return home to retake what was lost, stay safe solider... I am coming"

This message raised hope of seeing Xola thrive once more and hearing that Hyrix Maximus was alive and still leading, had reversed his thoughts that the war was lost but not over yet or that he was the last of his kind.

Kara intrigued to help him complete his new task of establishing a hidden base, though she feared that another New Krypton situation would happen, he assured her it won't, though he also had fears the warwould be brought here to Earth as they didn't need another alien war happening on Earth again.

She was happy to know that his planet would have life thrive again, but she felt... Saddened about it, knowing he would be leaving Earth to go back to Xola when the civil war ends.

As stated, he wanted Kara to go there with him, to see it's full restoration though she wasn't entirely sure as she wanted to stay on Earth, she felt gloomy about him possibly leaving Earth for good, which resulted in her having a nervous breakdown over, she got over it quick with her two of her best friend's help being Cassie Sandsmark and Stephanie Brown, but they never told Y/N about it.

Soon after with the arrival with Hyrix Maximus and the Resistance, it brought unwanted attention to Earth as Y/N feared.

The US government along with the President were warned of this immediately, more aliens arriving to Earth, bringing even more chaos but if it wasn't for Y/N's words, the Xolar Resistance would have Humans targeting them too, Hyrix Maximus and the Resistance had to reveal themselves to the public and speak with the President in person, showing they aren't the ones to fear but the Releimors are, their sworn enemy.

The Kryptonian could only smile as she got out of her outfit, hanging it up in her closet, changing into her pj's as her Fiancé got up, slapping on a new pair of boxers to jump into bed with his smiling true love, thinking back to her powerful orgasm.

"What powerful orgasm that was huh?" he thought back at it, smiling at her.

"I had a fear that would happen but... It felt so good!" she said with satisfaction, cuddling into him after taking off her engagement ring, placing it at her bedside table for safe keeping.

"I could tell" he kissed her on the head as the latter giggle with each other, kissing straight after.

"Y'know? Where'd you think we'll have our honeymoon?" she asked him curiously, changing the subject.

"Hmm... We'll have it on Earth, recently looked into a place" he responded to her.

"Ohhh, what place?" she got excited, looking right up at him.

"It's a surprise ~" he told her, as she pouted and gave him puppy dog eyes next to try persuade him into telling her - "Okay, okay, you can stop that, It's Peru" he chuckled.

"Peru? Sounds lovely, been there a few times during my flights around the world" she smiled, feeling happy with her victory of persuasion.

"I bet you have" he chuckled in fruition with her giggle. 

You both looked into each other's eyes and only saw love in them, her love for you is like a flame that can't be snuffed out, your love for her is like an undying flower, always getting taken cared of with water and sunlight, showing your undying love for Kara Zor-El, Linda Lang, Supergirl, the girl you've known to love and spend the rest of your days with, devoted to each other and loyal to one another.

"I love you" Y/N said with glee, smiling into her blue rays.

"I love you too" she giggled, deeply kissing him on the lips before resting her head on him as the both shut their eyes, knowing what's to come next.

And they couldn't be more happier to spend their future... Together.

Wow.... That was a very long one don't ya think?

Yeah this took me ages to write out, put a lot of work into it and such, along with reading through the all the New Earth comics again, kinda wish DC would go back to the New Earth universe, though Flashpoint happened, maybe there is an alternative timeline where Flashpoint never happened... Maybe...

This might sound silly and i know bruce is bisexual and all but from a queer standpoint, the scene where he proposes to selina feels a lot like compulsory heterosexuality. "I love you. I HAVE to love you."

And considering the timeline, joker was HIDDEN INSIDE BRUCE'S BASEMENT my god the implications, the metaphor....

Yeah, the whole thing is... [clears throat] very interesting. These two panels, which happen relatively close in time, put it into perspective:

However, to be entirely honest, I don't think Bruce proposing to Selina, and that whole arc... can be boiled down to just compulsory heterosexuality. It's more complicated than that. Bruce is doing this after interacting with the Batman of Flashpoint, his own father, who begs him to try and be happy. And Bruce's idea of happiness, very much inspired by Thomas', is settling down with a woman and having a family. Gaining peace.

Tom King is the one who wrote the wedding arc, and the whole thing is permeated by this... typically masculine, American idealization of women as this isle of peace that a tortured man yearns for, but can never fully choose. I'm sure there's names for this trope or stereotype, but I'm too lazy to look this up. Think Michael Mann movies, think James Bond movies, think stories about criminals and agents and soldiers leading a dark violent life aspiring to put down arms, and the whole dream being entangled with a woman. A female character who usually isn't fleshed out beyond the representation of leaving a life of violence behind, having a nice wife and nice children in a nice house with a nice white picket fence. Tbh it's not surprising to me that King ended up writing Bruce and Selina with these undertones, because of King's infamous background with the CIA before he became a comic book writer.

And thing is, I don't think it's inaccurate to portray Bruce this way. Bruce has lead a long life of violence, and he wants to want to stop. He wishes it didn't define him as much as it does, he wishes there was another path for him-- and this wish drives his attempt to settle down with Selina. "I have to love you" is less about "you're a woman and I should marry a woman", it's more about "if I love you I am more of a human being, and I need that." Yes, it's compulsory heterosexuality too, in the sense that Bruce is drawing from the heteronormative idea that happiness can only be achieved through normality, and normality = wife and retirement. But it's also a sad, desperate attempt at salvaging himself through Selina, whom he does love... but the things he loves about her are less about her, and more about himself. In the end, his own subconscious acknowledges all of it, during the Knightmares arc:

[sigh] It's all quite sad. And I've said it in a different post, but this is partly why -- in a seemingly paradoxical way -- a relationship with Joker has the potential to work. "You can't love anyone but the Vow, but the Bat," Selina (a figment of his own mind) tells Bruce. And Joker is part of the Vow. In many ways, over the decades, Joker has become the endgame of the Vow, the incarnation of all the things the Bat is supposed to defeat. It's fucked up and makes me want to chew on glass, but the Bat could allow loving Joker, because loving Joker would be a part of the Mission.

Anyway, I went on a bit of an unncessary tangent, but yeah! I do agree, Anon. So many implications.
