I am SO SO GLAD that you're asking about my lore/ship because I want to share more about my goobers and their universe!

Note: I do NOT know the entirety of Half-Life. I was making lore for my TSP (The Stanley Parable) universe which is a part of a multiverse. I watched HLVRAI by mistake when I mistook Benry for Barney and I just love HLVRAI and Benry that it’s hard not to put it in the lore.

About the Ship - GeeBees:

A proper love triangle where all three love, respect, and care for each other.

Gordon (he/him; FTM) is curious and everything about Benry fascinates him. Barney and Gordon are childhood friends and had become lovers after HL2 with Barney helping Gordon recover. Gordon would much prefer both his lovers safe and unhurt but understood that that'll happen once the Resistance finds a bigger base for shelter. Now, he stays at home taking care of himself and helping when needed, otherwise, he'd cuddle Benry and Barney when one or both are back home. He enjoys giving and receiving physical affection to his lovers and despises silence, so it's a blessing to have two lovers who make all the sounds they want around him. He was the reason why Benry sleeps between him and Barney after Benry warded off G-Man one night.

Benry is healing with Gordon and Barney for the better, he helps around with them and the Resistance base, and his affection is reciprocated and returned tenfold, it’s worse in a good way when Gordon and Barney proudly one-up Benry’s weirdness. He adores Gordon and is happy that he doesn't find him weird in a bad way and it does surprise him at first back at the simulation, but he grew to love his curious yet freaky nature of Gordon as he'd too learn new things about himself (like his true form(s), shapeshifting and purring). Barney and Benry just GET each other as they've experienced being left in the background and Barney could easily pick up Benry who is fine with being carried by hot people.

Barney had always been taking care of the two and making sure to not lose Gordon again, because of Benrey, Barney feels validated on his feelings and anxieties while also letting Benry help him around, though he does like to lightheartedly tease Benry. Barney and Gordon being childhood friends helped a lot on their relationship and meeting Benry somehow strengthened their bond as the duo became a trio. Benry and Gordon would pay Barney back for taking care of them by taking care of him too. Benry even helps by shapeshifting into Barney to take his place at Combine when Barney's unable to work. And when Barney's anxieties get to him, Benry can purr and sing some blue balls into his mouth to calm him.

What happened in this AU?

The interesting things that happened BEFORE that: 

Benrey and the Science Team (Tommy, Bubby, Dr. Coomer, Darnold, and Forzen) were put into a simulation that would later be HLVRAI.

Gordon and Barney are childhood friends who managed to stay in contact and meet again in Black Mesa.

After Black Mesa put Benrey and his Science Team in the simulation, they all were put into this sort of hibernation until a player arrived and dons the in-game HEV suit as “Gordon Freeman”. This happened 3 times, according to Benry, and the gameplay is different each time. Before being put in the simulation though, Benrey took and hid a master code of the simulation which lets him do whatever he wants with the map and story of the game. The first “player” (2010) was a guide who helped take the Science Team around the Black Mesa map, and Benry named them “Puter”. Sadly, Puter’s data and memory were erased to make way for the second player (2020) “Feetman” and started what we all know as “HLVRAI” and Benry changed the story and gameplay of the simulation because he thought it was boring.

The third player (2030), after the simulation erased the data and memory of the game model, is both Gordon and Barney who exchange because Gordon takes mandatory naps to recover from his PTSD and morphine rehab, and Benrey feels hope on leaving the simulation just to see them face-to-face.

After the events of ResCas and Gordon waking up from Stasis to Half-Life 2, Gordon gets together with Barney and maintains a platonic/sibling bond with Alyx, who then gets taken to Stasis by G-Man. Gordon HAS witnessed Eli dying, only to see him fine yet grieving Alyx’s disappearance (2020). That made Gordon DESPISE G-Man.

How GeeBees met?

Gordon and Barney reside together in the White Forest Resistance base. The apocalypse is nearing its end (2030), but Gordon and Barney are more happy about being a couple after so long. One day though, Gordon opened the door to G-Man who gave him an errand of the day: Play a game and retrieve something important, and as he appeared, he left suddenly. He also left a Playstation 2 console in a box by Gordon’s doorstep, and Barney helped Gordon set it up while unsure of what G-Man was planning. Along with the console was a VR set and a game CD with a blank cover and “Half-Life VR” written on the disc with black marker.

Gordon put on the game and the headset, he expected anything but a shitty yet semi-accurate environment that was the entrance of Black Mesa. Barney, who was behind Gordon and watching the TV screen, couldn’t believe it either. Gordon was starting to panic as he remembered all that happened during the day ResCas happened and Barney and Gordon were trying to figure out who was sick enough to make a game on the thing that started the apocalypse and what would they say to Eli and Issac. All their worries were halted after they heard a deadpan voice “hey. can i see your passport?”. And that’s when their lives changed for the better.

Long story short: Gordon and Barney take turns playing the game with Benry and the Science Team guiding them, Gordon’s worries about the game lessened when important events that had happened were changed into something more lighthearted. After playing the game (which Gordon and Barney didn’t want to do), Benrey managed to get him and the Science Team into Gordon and Barney’s shared phone before Gordon and Barney could figure out how to get them out of the digital space. 

After that, Benrey stays with Gordon and Barney while everyone else wants to live elsewhere around the base. It was tough for the Science Team to come to terms with the fact that they were no longer in a simulation and that the ResCas was an actual event (and also the fact that Benrey is meeting the ACTUAL infamous Gordon Freeman who he first heard from the researchers before he was put into the simulation) but in the end, they want to help the Resistance.

More does happen after, Issac adopts Bubby as his brother (Bubby being cloned from Issac), Tommy helps with retrieving Alyx and another OC of mine out of G-Man’s Stasis, and Benrey helps Barney by shapeshifting as him at Combine as well as getting to sleep between Gordon and Barney to keep G-Man away.

And this is practically fanon in my lore, but Giftverse! Gordon, Barney, and Benry get to meet their alternate AU versions of themselves.

I thought of this last night for the funsies cause I felt like throwing some incomprehensible paragraph to my friend

so I think that benrey and Forzen both are not human ngl, let me explain, first of all benry is.. benry is that he acts odd and yes we all love him but he mentions how he used to be best friends with Forzen *and* and Gordon, even though the Gordon thing is bs I think that’s evidence that benry could be .. somewhat toxic, he’s funny but idk, like his behavior towards Gordon because he has a crush or wants to be friends or more than that is off, like he goes out of his way to harass Gordon and mock him as well as make threat to him and kill people (and birds, rip those pigeons) just to mess with Gordon. Now yes this is behavior caused by the fact he cannot have Gordon (weird wording Ik) but that is behavior non the less, so I have no idea where I’m going with this other than the fact that for a disciplined soldier of team nice (why would nice guy like mean people smh Forzen lied) if not for the fact that he may have some similarity to benry species wise and they were kinda just together as friends because of the one thing in common.

theory-ish/headcannon 2: benry is non human but relatively young in his species or gos?? How do they age idk so I can’t prove it and the reason he kinda goes ape wild and hormonal is from the radiation (warned by Gordon to stay out because he’s not wearing a suit to protect from radiation) speeding up his growth or mutating him harshly as explaining his sudden change of very snarky or mocking to Gordon to “leave me alone! I hate you” edgy teen towards Gordon and then kinda accepting like “man we used to be such good friends..” (yea it’s bs but his tone when saying it)

theory 3: Forzen is a shapeshifter :3

ok so first of all, behavior, Forzen is a marine soldier and should attack on sight, yes he is in a singular op or team but who on earth would do that knowing what’s out there unless Forzen was incredibly skilled, fearless or just straight didn’t need a team so his behavior makes no sense unless his higher up or commander is a literal monkey or wanted him dead (another reason, he may be wanted dead for being a shapeshifter but I’m NOT doin that rn) so he may have just taken the form of a dead soldier to not be shot on sight. And not to mention his stuttering when asked his teams name, my theory is he had to make that up on the spot and had no idea about military stuff. Why is a shapeshifter fluent in French? Idk this is just weird stuff I thought of lmao but I’ll update if I get an idea.

'So I took it,' Benrey continued. 'It was the story that made sense to Gordon Freeman, so it was probably the right one. If I could play the part of Final Boss, maybe I could have some story that made sense. And like, if I was secretly planning all this, that’s so much cooler than having to believe that everything about the way I work is–'

Benrey stopped himself, but seemed to realize it was already too late. He closed his mouth with a half-grumble, half-sigh.

'A mistake,' he finished. 'Being the awesome final boss was easier than accepting I don’t work.'

The metaphorical cards were all on the table. Gordon could never forget that boss fight, with the gigantic warping form of a security guard spouting line after line of a nonsense narrative in what Gordon had assumed was some attempt at scaring the team off. 

But that had never been true, had it? Benrey hadn’t been trying to get anyone to do anything. It had all been for him. He was throwing out narrative hook after narrative hook, trying to get anything to stick to the wall and establish that he was a part of the world. He’d tried every angle– appeal to emotion, nostalgia, crude humor, a grand adventure, even video game developer corporate conflict. It was all a Hail Mary toss, and it was never caught.

'Holy shit, dude.' Gordon could only whisper."

For the fanfic commentary, this was one of my favorite parts of "Don't Spell Memory Without Me" and I was genuinely blown away by how good and smart this interpretation of Benry is for the Gordon streamman series and I would love to hear your thoughts on it. <3

So neat fact about this. I posted the first chapter of Memory in late May of 2022, and it took several more months to get to the Benrey reveal. I actually put this explanation of Benrey’s actions in a joke text post in mid April, and it got exactly twenty notes. Foreshadowing level 100. 

I have a close friend who I bounce all my ideas around with, which is a very necessary part of the creative process for me. It also makes it handy to keep track of when my ideas came around– my first discord message to them that discussed the concept of Benrey having no past and improvising everything is dated to February, and it was in the middle of a chat about the story that would evolve into Run For Your Life. So it’s been floating in Headcanon Space since before the Streamman series got a solid start. Dang, it’s been around since before I started my current job! 

Benrey’s just so interesting, you know? He’s weirdly powerful. He follows his own set of rules, and doesn’t like it when other people don’t. He’s not human. He says all sorts of stuff that doesn’t make sense, even when the stakes are at their highest. What’s his motivation? Why is any of this happening? There’s never a concrete answer, but from another perspective, it’s pretty simple. He’s in an improv scene.

I’m an ex-theater kid, and I’ve done my fair share of improv. I took a class a couple years ago held by this big-name local theater, getting back in touch with the basics. Most people are familiar with the classic “Yes, And” rule– you can’t turn down the fact that your scene partner just gave you. You have to accept that as reality, and then build on it. 

Gordon, of course, breaks the golden rule right off the bat. It wouldn’t be turning Benrey down if he just went “Oh I don’t have it, I meant to bring it today.” It’s the fact that he’s confused about being asked. As a character, Gordon (not Wayne) is a terrible improv partner, and the scene is supposed to be all about him. Benrey’s existence is defined by and contained within an improv scene, and this guy keeps turning down all his leads. So when Gordon gives him something to work with– a role as an antagonist– he has to take it. 

This interpretation of Benrey is also rooted in my own experience with neurodivergence, and with something I call the Spicy Banana effect. There’s a name for it, probably, but I like Spicy Banana. I’ve heard anecdotes about people who have gone decades without realizing they have a banana allergy since nobody had ever told them what bananas were supposed to taste like. And why would you? Everyone knows what bananas taste like, and since the affected person never got seriously ill, they just assumed that everyone tasted bananas as spicy. Among other things, I was well into my teenage years before I found out that it doesn’t take most people well over an hour to fall asleep every night. When you don’t have context, it’s easy to feel like everyone is just managing obvious problems better than you are. Finding out the truth is double sided: you have the relief of knowing you’re not bad, you’re just different, but you can also feel cheated. I’ve had to deal with carrying rocks in my backpack this whole time, and their backpacks were empty?

As a final note, I want to talk about a bit in this excerpt that I'm unsatisfied with, but refuse to change.

Benrey stopped himself, but seemed to realize it was already too late. He closed his mouth with a half-grumble, half-sigh.

The final line in this part doesn't really feel like something Benrey would say. It's hard to articulate exactly, but it feels melodramatic in a very DeviantArt Sad Wolf Drawing kind of way. It's a little too honest for Benrey, like he's breaking character. But I can see how that could make it hit even harder for some, y'know? Like he's letting his guard down. It's not my favorite line, but I won't touch it. It's fine the way it is.

John Watson- Most adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. THE OG CHARACTER I OBSESSED OVER.

Watson, to me, defines if an adaptation is going to work. He's not a henchman meant to be there for Holmes' ego. Watson is his own fucked up guy, hell, do you think Holmes would keep someone around that was dull? My favorite fan work, Warlock Holmes, gives Watson a fascinating character arch that explores loyalty, addiction, grief, PTSD, masculinity, societal expectations, and ethics. I had a Holmes(all media types) faze from 2015- essentially now. It's what I read when I just feel like shit. Watson is just as batshit as Holmes in the original short stories. Willing to murder, hide evidence, and fight to protect Holmes. Baby.

AGENT 99- Get Smart (1965–1969)

Deep cut. My family kept a box set of this show that they grew up with. This show was a James Bond parody series in the US in the 60s that really hasn't aged well.

Agent 99, the lady on the right, is a fucking delight and was one of my first tv crushes. The whole joke is 'The Simpsons' set up of a Dumb Husband and Smart Wife. But 99 is fucking amazing. Due to when this show was aired and general sexism, she's not able to just solve every case for 86(on the left). But the audience is meant to know that She's the one doing all the work. She is sarcastic and witty, and not afraid to stick up against 86's ego and hot an ahhhhhhh. It's supposed to play against the trope of the 'useless' woman in Bond media, but she gets just as much development as her partner. We also see them build up their relationship over the course of five seasons into a loving couple, and 86 knows he's the one who got lucky. When she opens up she's highly passionate and a huge fucking nerd. They're both dorks and I love them.

She's also always willing to get in danger for her fail husband. Don't get me started on the awful movie adaptation.

You already know my thoughts if you've been following me for a while. The showrunner, writers, and actors all love this fuck up. He's a pleasure to write, and fuck, he's compelling. I know the magic of Izzy is how much we don't know, but I'll enjoy the ride while I'm here. It's not often that my favorite character is liked by the writers (Castiel, Supernatural), so I'm living for the welcoming community we've built online.

I want his gender, and that's okay! Please and thank you, with leather on top.

Jaskier(Dandelion)- The Witcher(All Media Types)

*Look* I've only seen the two seasons of the show. Jaskier is barely in it and sidelined as much as humanly possible. With that, I've spent two years of my life reading as much fanfic with him as the main character as I could consume. He is my first case of gender envy and the reason I've been listening to The Amazing Devils for 3 years. Jaskier is who I think I am in a friend group, sarcastic, bitchy, and judgy.

I am fully aware that he shines in the books. The show fucked over every aspect of Geralt and Jaskier's friendship, and honestly, I would have read the books if OFMD didn't come out when it did. I prefer the idea of Jaskier I've built in my head. He's been there for years, he might as well stay. He is an immortal half-elf and is Ciri's beloved uncle/third parent. This mess of a show won't take that from me.

Did he murder his brother over a family feud? Yeah, kinda. Is he the personification of an 'older sibling'? 100% Did Blizzard ignore a growing fanbase in 2016 and give us almost no lore about him beyond that? Yeah.

Just like with Jaskier, fan interpretation is what drives this fandom. He thrives as the fandoms emo bitch, and I like him so much.

Not a fandom I spend too much time in (besides now, where I spend most of my free time playing O2). But I always loved the general 'there are 50 ships in this fandom' vibe. (Also, throw Cassidy here, he deserves it)

Morrigan- Dragon Age (Spoilers Ahead for the video games Dragon Age: Origins, II, Inquisition)

If I was raised to be the 'spare', younger, body for an elven god mother, raised in a marsh, I would be just as socially fucked up as she is. She is a Bioware Tsundere, like most on this list, seems easy to read but complex once you crack that shell. Her story through the games is amazing and seeing her slowly learn the truth and accept who she is, is inspiring. Growing up I used to play as a male character just to romance her.

She doesn't need love to be happy in life. Just someone to support her in the bullshit that she's about to go through. Playing the game from a friend or lover's POV is rewarding (cough cough *Alistar*). When you do romance her, she's still sarcastic, insensitive, and herself. She doesn't see a reason to change for you (Alistar). She views love as stupid bullshit that will get you killed, and in this story, she's right!

If you fuck up in some story decisions, she still has agency and will leave you if her moral lines are crossed. Nowadays this is kinda common, but when I first played this game as a kid, I was afraid of doing the wrong thing and making my favorite character leave. My only issue is you can't romance her as a female Gray Warden. But Leliana is Bi in origins and is usually my first choice. She does a lot of shit I don't agree with though...

its not really a fact but I headcannon that in pre act 3 commentary in the toiler room when Benry shifts through the mirror and says something along the lines of get taway from my mirror I imagine it being like the liquid terminator forming out of the mirror into Benry. also I love how casually Benry says what is wrong with you to Gordon several times in that scene. 1. Green Eyes, Guns, and Dangerous Things | M | 88k

Pairing: Tom/Harry (Harry Potter) Summary: Harry hid his omega sub-gender for most of his life until one unfortunately sudden heat cycle. His life after that becomes a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with a twisted CEO and his finest hitman: Tom. 

This story was truly born from all my deepest desires in a fic: Modern AU’s, Sentinel/Guide AU’s, A/B/O dynamics, and hitmen. Which is probably why it holds such a special place in my heart. And for that reason, I’m also still so so glad other people seem(ed) to like it too. (Now if only I can just finish that sequel… 😩)

2. One Hundred Stars | E | WIP, Ongoing

Pairing: Ben/Harry (Disney’s Descendants) Summary: Unable to provide an heir, Ben is forced to mate with an alpha from the Isle of the Lost in order to keep the peace in Auradon.

Another A/B/O fic because I’m shameless. I’m really enjoying this one atm even though it’s been... um, 5 months... since the last update. 👀💦 But it’s def my fave, go-to daydream world currently. 

3. City of the Lost | E | WIP, Unpublished

Pairing: Ben/Harry (Disney’s Descendants) Summary: Ben is a Submissive but to all the world acts and claims to be a Dominant. To escape from the increasing pressure of hiding his secret, as well as his wealthy parents’ great expectations, Ben becomes embroiled with the gangs of the inner city. One such member in particular just so happens to be a Dom with his own secrets.

My other fave thing to daydream about and unfortunately only the roughest of WIPs for now. There’s the biggest writing ‘dump doc’ for this on my Google drive and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it one day. The idea for it came after binge-watching the first season of True Detective waaay back when it first aired. It was also initially going to be another tomarry fic but recently got switched up to my current pairing, benry. It once again ticks all my boxes: Modern/non-magic AU’s, gangs, Dom/Sub dynamics, enemies-to-lovers and, of course, an unhealthy amount of smut. ✨👌 

4. My Name Is Tom | M | 15k

Pairing: Harry/Tom (Harry Potter) Summary: Harry and his friends rescue a discarded android only to learn that ‘Tom’ appears to be much more intelligent - and dangerous - than they could have anticipated.

One of the more darker takes on this pairing I’ve ever written, I think. And a direct product of me binge-watching the series Humans. Combined with my love for cyberpunk, electronic music, and a fascination with AI, I couldn’t wait to try my hand at something in the sci-fi genre. This fic was intended to be more romantic, if you can believe it. 😆 But I supposed as stories are wont to do, it morphed. There’s also been a sequel in the works for a while now and I’ve been itching to finally get on it. But a fair warning to anyone who thought THIS fic was a mindfuck: Buckle up for the sequel. 😅

5. The Gardens of Riddle Manor | M | 51k

Pairing: Harry/Tom (Harry Potter) Summary: Harry is a mistreated orphan under the care of his relatives. After being forced to trespass on their neighbours property for a tulip bulb, the next day he is taken under the wing of the the mysterious and ominous young Lord Riddle as compensation.

Your typical Regency era romance with a fairy tale twist. My first ever fic and one that also still holds a special place in my heart. This story was another passion project borne from my obsession with period dramas. I’m still hoping to one day go back and update/edit it so it’s a little less… rough, lol.

Oh yeah so I noticed this, but both Benrey and Sunkist can use the Black Mesa Sweet Voice™, What do you make of this? I'd love to hear any headcanons if you have them *holds out a comically tiny microphone*

aw gee well since u asked so politelllyyy (pulls out a podium and chalkboard filled with indecipherable symbols and numbers. i have somehow donned a suit with a labcoat over it in the short seconds you took ur eyes off me to look at the chalkboard. i clear my throat) if you ask me, tommy was set to study benry as the little creature they were, this was before benry had taken a human form, so they were just a little blob thing maybe. once tommy figures out that what hes studying is in fact sentient and not just some little goo from an alien planet and begins to learn more about benrys various powers, he decides to help them by feeding them different dna samples of species that they can learn from and develop attributes of, eventually allowing them to ingest human dna. this allows benry to be alien, yet still appear as a human complete with different ethinicities (i hc them as peruvian/brazilian >;P) once theyre fully equipped with these skills tommy convinces his dad to let benry get a job in black mesa by saying technically hed still b able to monitor them, just with more freedom. the other scientists working on the same project are none the wiser and are told not to ask questions when their specimen "dissapears." life goes on. tommy, still working in the biological research department, gets the go ahead to create his perfect puppy!! soon to be known as our beloved sunkist :) tommy has always been fascinated by benrys vast abilities, and believing the perfect dog should have a way to communicate, decides to see if he can somehow implement the ability of sweet voice into the puppy! he asks benry for permission to perform a couple tests, and obviously benry is hesitant, having great discomfort to being poked and prodded at from their earlier blob phases in black mesa, but ultimately agrees bc they know they can trust tommy :DDD so tommy like the genius he is, is somehow able to separate and extricate benry's alien dna that allows them to communicate through colors and noise, and splices that with the dna of his little doggy!! bing bang boom!! after incubation you get the perfect little puppy, SUNKIST!!!! it takes tommy many, many tries to finally get it right, but he believes it was well worth the effort :)

rating my plushies based on how good they are to cuddle in bed

1. Snips

classic. long enough to slor in between my legs which is a good bonus. unfortunately not too thick as to be able to wrap my arms around him comfortably. 7/10

2. Tiburon

one I used to sleep with constantly. good chunk to him, but is too squishy for my tastes. also has a bit of blood on him from when I went to the dentist and napped right after :(. 8/10

3. Benry (HLVRAI)

I attempted to hug them when I first got them, but they are too small to hold good in a hug, let alone a sleepy cuddle-hug. Plus passport being stiff makes it uncomfortable to hold next to me face (where stuffed animals usually end up with how I position them). 2/10

4. The Knight/Ghost (Hollow Knight)

slept with them a good bit when I first got them as a birthday gift from my friend. negatives are that they're too small, and the sword and horns are a bit awkward to deal with. 5/10

5. Cheese (Sonic the Hedgehog)

havent actually tried to sleep with cheese yet!!!! but judging by size, I dont think itd be a good fit to sleep with. may attempt at a later date. 1/10 until I actually sleep with cheese

6. Pikachu but Chunky (Pokemon)

won at a festival when I visited my aunt and cousins. small, but the give is nice. Downside is the string which i dont which to cut off. 3/10

7. Oso

got him I dont know how many years ago at this point. gift from my aunt I think. brought him everywhere with me even to the doctors. the doctors would give him matching bandages and gauze so I would be less afraid :) i dont cuddle with him now bc my dog tore off one of his ears, but maybe one day I'll fix it and sleep with him. 6/10

8. Blu Dispenser (TF2)

similar issue to benry, there are too many floppy or hard bits for me to comfortable sleep with. is nice to hold however, and is soft. 5/10

9. Charlie Moose

I swear there was a store with the name Charlie where I got him which is why I named him that. anyways v soft and nice, could be a little plumper, but is nice to sleep with. 7/10

10. Rufus

I got him recently at a build a bear with a friend who helped me pick out his outfit. he would be perfect to sleep with had I not made the mistake of purchasing a scented heart for him, which has forever cursed him to smell like a weird cheap fruit scent. I would love to take it out so I can properly sleep with him but I doubt my sewing abilities, so he will remain as he is for now. 7/10

On Hopefulness in Hlvrai

Something I was thinking about, when considering why I love HLVRAI so much even though I never could get into the actual Half Life series, and why HLVRAI has struck such a chord with people, especially right now in the year it was made, with all the other crazy shit going on in the world is Hlvrai’s, especially juxtaposed to Half Life, unending hopefulness. And togetherness.

Half Life as a series very much centers around you, as the player, being alone. Around Gordon as a character being alone. And around his actions as being, in many ways, almost pointless. You as the player are surrounded by NPCs you can’t actually save in any meaningful way, only fail to protect or simply leave behind, in a facility you can’t prevent from being destroyed, with no allies, no friends, all for no reward. Half Life Gordon works so hard and faces so much, only to be rewarded with being put in stasis for 20 years while an apocalypse he couldn’t prevent destroys the world as he knows it. Then when he gets back, all the people he knew have grown old or died without him. His story revolves around him not being able to save those he cares about and always being, at the end of the day, alone. Then the series ends on a cliff hanger when all hope seems lost, with no indication there will ever be a resolution. And, even if there is, it could only be bitter sweet. 

Then, on the other hand, is Hlvrai. At it’s very definition, the story is about a world in which Gordon Freeman’s journey is NOT undertaken alone. It hinges on the idea of there being these companions that will always be by his side (even if some he’d like to get rid of at times). Having these friends and relying on them is essential to the story. Hlvrai Gordon gets help solving puzzles when he’s stumped. Is defended when he’s unable to defend himself. He laughs. He jokes. Even when he’s angry at the others, he still cares about them, he still has them to accompany him, except for his lowest moment in act 3 after the betrayal. It’s by far the lowest moment of his character arc because he is, for the first time, truly alone. 

And Hlvrai Gordon’s actions feel like they make a difference. His victories feel triumphant. He doesn’t get stuck in stasis for 20 years, alone in a void, as his reward for saving the world. He goes instead to a pizza party with his new found friends, this rag-tag family group he’s gathered. As exasperated as he sometimes is by them, he loves his found family. Gordon of Hlvrai gains in a way that Half Life Gordon only loses. Nothing is truly lost in Hlvrai. Not even Benry really dies permanently. 

The ending, while also ambiguous and even somewhat heartbreaking, is hopeful.  Coomer is hopeful that the Player will get them out of the Game and we as the audience are, too. In the face of everything within the Game, the story maintains this unwavering sense of hope. This unerring belief in a future that will be bright and is worth the hardships of getting to. 

And I think that stems so much from the nature of its creation and creators. It is a collaborative work at its core, with each contributing member, including the stage hand, allowed nearly total freedom. It’s not just a story told through multiple characters, but one created in tandem by a group. The fact is was made as a collaborative work and in a live performance in which the audience has a great deal of interaction as well creates that sense of togetherness that shines through in the final product. 

As does the sense of hope for the audience. This is something created as an act of play and of joy. It doesn’t feel like so much mainstream media where you constantly have to worry about the writers throwing in things like killing off beloved characters or breaking up the team dynamic or destroying everything they worked for for “drama” which is almost just an accepted thing if you watch anything on TV. There’s a sense of safety in getting attached to these characters.

And I think all this is why Hlvrai stuck such a chord with so many people in such a profound way. When the first episode was filmed, it was just before the national quarantine started in the US, and most of the episodes and commentaries were then made during the early days of quarantine, in the height of fear and political unrest in the US. ‘Normal’ media was all but put on complete hold. The airways were filled with nothing but rising case numbers and a government that was clearly not going to help. No one knew what would help. No one knew what to do. People felt so isolated and so at odds with everyone. It felt like the apocalypse.

Then comes this strange, weird, and wonderful piece of improv comedy in which they take a game based around an apocalypse, and instead turn it into this tale of the most unlikely group coming together and defeating these impossible odds. Stopping the apocalypse the original game’s protagonist could only delay. Flipping the script of the original game into a story based so firmly in this idea of friendship and family and just hope. 

And that really is something amazing.

Holy crap your art is amazing!! :3 it’s so cute and adorable, yet it can be spooky and scary with some of the Benry stuff! (Which good gravy... I absolutely love the either it’s super cute Benry or it’s oh, that’s actually legitimately terrifying Benry!) and grumpy Gordon... XD man how I can relate to him with HAIR PROBLEMS! 😂 in all seriousness! Your art is amazing, absolutely love you style! Your art does inspire me and gives me plenty of ideas!
