Book #105 - An Abundance Of Katherines by John Green
(first time read; a post sort of in defense of yelling)
HUMANS AREN'T MATH, FOR FUCKS SAKE, YOU CHILD, YOU BAFFOON, YOU STUPID KNOW-IT-ALL
I hated reading this book. I was yelling at it pretty much every page, mostly at Colin, second-most at the narrator. It was absolutely atrocious and there are a million things wrong with it that I would love to list and take apart if y'all have a few spare hours to - okay, yeah, no, that's cool, I get that.
Anyway, I didn't have a bad time? The fact that I have a thousand points to complain about doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy myself. For one, this is the first John Green romance that I actually believed to be a genuine romance. Sometimes. For a select few paragraphs. And I enjoyed yelling at it. The stuff that bothered me was fun to yell at. I hated reading it, but that didn't make the experience a miserable one.
I had a blast complaining, is my point.
The rest of this post, therefore, is composed of my tiniest niggle, my smallest nit-pick, because I did find it hilarious and have an overwhelming need to share.
So early on Lindsey and Colin are having this conversation and they both speak German for like a sentence or two. And it could just be a typo, but since a later German phrase also didn't get capitalized, I want to count this as a translation mistake. So. In German, there is a formal you: Sie. See how it's capitalized? Well, if you don't do that (so: sie), then you get either the German she (3rd person singular, female), or the German plural they (incidentally, German doesn't have singular they and I will die mad about it). The formal you is grammatically considered a plural form and thus gets used exactly like 3rd person plural - so literally the only difference between those two is capitalization. Now, three guesses as to what this book fails to do.
Anyway, that's why the translation footnotes are good, because I was hella confused as to what Lindsey was on about when she said "My mom thinks that they are good for me.", until I read the footnote and started cackling.
Also, this gets very nitpicky, since both of these characters have presumably only learned German in school, but like....  The thought of two awkward teenagers siezing each other has me rolling on the floor laughing. There has never been anything more hilarious. Comedy is over, we can stop now, pack it up. Adieu.

I love being a hater but I also love being an Enjoyer, so what I like to do is enjoy something so aggressively and deeply that I come to know everything about it, and bc I know everything, I can find (minor and major) things to complain about. as a fun activity. enrichment. but then I do that, and people think I actually hate this thing. they’ll be like, oh, good to know about (flaw), I was gonna check that thing out but now I’ll steer clear. you don’t get it. I’m complaining because I love it so much. hey wait come back. I’ve got some more stuff to nitpick

My DTYIS took so long, that by the time I posted it, I felt like it didn’t really fit my style or skill level anymore so I thought “why not do it again?” SO HERE WE ARE
Third times the charm✨😎
Me rambling about all the little details:
For this one took a lot of inspiration from the wrathful aspect of the Bodhisattva of wisdom Mahakala (I did a research project on him a while ago and the iconography stuck with me). He was mostly prayed to to protect troops during wars and battles so I thought it fit well with Wukong and his warform. The five jewel ornaments in Wukongs hair are reference to Mahakala’s five skulls, which also represent the five wisdom‘s. The skullcap and knife of course reference the spread of wisdom and destruction of ignorance.
For what Wukong’s outfit I thought since he doesn’t necessarily need armor, it would be fun to reference opera! I did have to change the colors tho from his opera outfit to better mesh with the color scheme.
And for the last bit- the ruyi bang. For my redesign, I included lotus buds that bloom when wukong reaches enlightenment. But I wanted to continue having the staff change with along with him- so in place of the lotus buds, I decided to put Dragon Pearl for the time spent at Ao Guangs palace. Dragon pearls are usually flaming, and that also reminds me of the Buddhist mani, wish granting jewels (which can also be flaming).

@my-nitpicking-self asked me to talk about this post so here we are!
Tumblr media
yes, they are similar indeed. when i first started watching arcane, i immediately got catra flashbacks from jinx because of how similar they are.
scapegoat child? ✅
abandonment issues? ✅
toxic codependent relationship with their sister? ✅
implied mental health issues? ✅
bodycount by the hundreds? ✅
the only difference between that 1. jinx doesn’t get into an incestuous relationship with her sister and 2. the show doesn’t justify her behavior.
jinx is written to be a sympathetic character who only became a villain because of circumstances and to her credit, she was a lot nicer as a child, unlike catra. but her actions still aren’t glorified by the narrative.
arcane is a show where pretty much all of the characters are morally grey to some extent, and everything is shown as is. so jinx can’t exactly be labelled as a villain but she is definitely an antagonist, and a dangerous one at that. vi believes that she can save her sister but at no point does she or anyone else act like jinx never did anything wrong.
arcane succeeded in making jinx a tragic villain because they knew better than to make her out to be a poor little girl whose actions were all justified. she very clearly had mental health issues (and it was better portrayed than catra’s mental health, in my opinion) but that doesn’t excuse her murdering people left and right.
s2 hasn’t come out yet but i’m already pretty sure that jinx won’t be redeemed. and it’s better that way. don’t get me wrong, i don’t think any character is irredeemable and jinx definitely deserves a happy ending and therapy, but it would narratively make more sense for her to stay an antagonist. not to mention, i don’t think there would be enough episodes for a satisfying redemption arc and i hope to god that the writers don’t make the same mistake as spop.

Ok this may be nitpicking but my problem with the whole "Father's love" Is that your father Is the reason your sister is death, the whole reason y'all went to war... They casted you away because you didn't want Lilith to die...
The thing Is that Father's love Is not unconditional, If you didn't started the war, your sister would have died anyways, for the crime of loving a human too much, he practially made you choose between your loyalty to him or your love for your sister. Thats why Lucifer whole speech of "All Father did was love me, but I couldn't see It" feels shallow, because It undermines the tragedy of falling from the CR in the first place. Like If Seraph Lucifer had fallen in love with a human, he would probably had the same fate as Lilith. Simeon Is stripped of His own angelhood in S3/S4 for stealing the ring of light to save MC, so it's not like the CR Is better in the future or anything
I think Its unrealistic to expect OBM to put Father/God as this 100% Bad guy (with the whole uniting the three realms and all that) but also I feel like Lucifer should have more complicated feeling about this. I don't doubt Father loved him, but I don't think the conclusion of Lucifer arc should be that "All my Father did was love me but I was too prideful to see it"

i would like to say my ideal PJO adaptation (if i was being physically forced against my will to have to pick a live action adaptation over an animated one for some reason) would be a combo like writing of the musical + casting of the show + visuals of the movies
BUT the show actually does have the playwright for the musical as one of the major writers for like three episodes and that did nothing for it. so...
#pjo#riordanverse#pjo tv crit#i do love the casting for the musical lots and lots though#it was really good#i do also have some nitpicks for show casting but they're largely inconsequential#like majority i very much enjoy and think are cast well#i only have one i'd say im actually disappointed with and that's Poseidon. idk he just feels. bland??? does that make sense?#like idk maybe it's the costuming but im not getting Sea God *or* Fishing Dad from him#like i think i kinda see what they were going for and i saw some gifs of him in another show where he plays a pirate and its like#okay. *little* bit better. but idk im just not getting Poseidon from it#in general most of the immortals in the show dont feel very Immortal(tm) but thats definitely mostly just the writing/show itself#not any reflection of the casting#my only other two are i would have liked plus sized Clarisse. i am VERY sad we didnt get that#Dior is a VERY good Clarisse though so i'm not too upset about it. i like her Clarisse energy. the yelling is fantastic.#my most controversial pjo tv take is im still meh on Walker. like he's fine. but like he's kind of Just Fine to me so far#its probably mostly the writing being bad but he hasnt grown on me as Percy yet. i can tell he has the energy though in interviews n stuff#and the main trio dynamic in interviews and stuff is *very* good. i just wish the show writing was better#because the casting IS very good but they have so little to work with. you can really tell theyre trying their best#i like to joke the show would be better if they just set the cast loose in the woods doing in-character improv#like its clear basically all of them know their characters SUPER well. id watch 8 episodes of in the woods pjo cosplay improv.

Thinking about hg duo----qCellbit and qBad---and relationship imbalance, specifically during their time together in the Wars. (And I know relationship imbalance typically refers to romantic relationships, but it can definitely apply to platonic ones as well. Anyway this isn't the most ACCURATE term but I wasn't sure what else to call it. You'll see what I mean.)
Like, I keep imagining Cellbit, this 14ish- or 15ish-year-old kid dropped in the middle of a warzone with no idea if he's going to survive to see tomorrow. He's scrappy, and he's cutthroat because he needs to be to survive out here, but he's still just a kid. He knows he's not very strong, and he knows he's not very big or intimidating, and he doesn't know what he's doing. He's teaching himself (on the fly) how to hunt, how to hide, how to run, how to scavenge, and how to bandage wounds. In desperate moments, he does unspeakable things that shake him to his core. (Standing over a body, a knife in his hands, he's trembling, he hasn't eaten in eight days---)
And then he runs into Bad, who is everything that Cellbit is not: experienced, strong, intimidating, coordinated, methodical. Knowledgeable. Capable. He's been in the Wars much longer than Cellbit. He knows he's lucky that he happens to get on Bad's good side, and he is stupidly fortunate that Bad is letting him tag along.
Bad teaches him everything; Bad helps him refine his skills and shows him things he never would have been able to figure out on his own. Bad shows him how to walk as silent as the night. Bad shows him how to properly grip a knife. Bad shows him how to dress and re-dress wounds. Bad shows him where to hit someone to deal the most damage. Bad shows him the difference between poisonous and edible mushrooms. Bad shows him how to prepare cuts of a body. Bad shows him where to look for clean drinking water, then how to purify it. Bad shows him how to scrub the blood out of his clothes.
And not only that, but Bad is kind. Sure, it's difficult to wrangle an straight answer out of him sometimes, but he's always willing to tell a story. Also, he compliments Cellbit when he manages to do a takedown on his own, he praises Cellbit on his form in a fight. Bad smiles and laughs with him and messes around with him and ruffles his hair and calls him a "rapscallion" and a "muffinhead" and a whole assortment of dumb little nicknames.* Bad isn't a very cuddly guy, per se, but he's a steady presence whenever Cellbit has a nightmare, or in those rare moments after a hunt where he can't seem to stop shaking, or when the taste of blood in his mouth is suddenly just. too. thick.
*(Cellbit doesn't actually have a name at this point. He doesn't remember it. These nicknames are all he has.)
Cellbit looks up to Bad. He admires Bad, and he wants to do right by him. He wants Bad to be proud of him. He cares so, so much about Bad, and he knows he's incredibly goddamn lucky that Bad found him. Bad is, essentially, the only thing keeping him afloat in the Wars.
And Cellbit's memories only stretch back so far before his mind hits that thick black wall of Nothingness. As far as he is aware, there has been nothing but the Wars, and thus the time he's spent in this life is partitioned as Before Bad and After Bad.
To Cellbit, Bad is everything.
Bad, on the other hand? Well, it's not that he doesn't care about Cellbit. It's just...different. Because, no, this isn't Bad's first rodeo. He's walked through his fair share of conflicts, and he's had his fair share of travel companions. Cellbit is one of many---he's not the first, and he's definitely not going to be the last. Bad only helps the kid because he found him trying to carve up a body and come on, he clearly didn't know what he was doing, he was holding the knife all wrong!
And then he invites Cellbit to come with him because why not? Teaching Cellbit those skills he's lacking is a rewarding exercise. Bad recalls showing Cellbit how to throw knives, and the first time Cellbit managed to land the blade deep in the tree trunk, Cellbit looked back at him with this beaming grin---it was actually kind of cute! Plus, Bad didn't realize how much he missed having someone to talk to besides himself; he should really seek out travel companions more often.
Cellbit might be inexperienced and not exactly the strongest, but he's pretty smart, and he's very willing to do what's necessary to make it out here. Bad reckons that Cellbit might actually make it through winter before he dies. Probably of fever. Bad has lost a lot of companions to fever. Mortals get sick so, so easily and so, so quickly. It sucks, but oh well. That's just how it goes.
