So, my dear friend @thatqueerweirdo made an interesting observation about a particular writing passage of mine, and so I figured Hey, why not do a science and test this hypotheses?

The passage, by the way, is under the cut:

Sometime in 2070

The Sahara Desert

The hyena looked up from its dinner at the sound.

An explosion, bright as the sun itself, rudely interrupted its hunt and sent its prey scattering. The hyena just barely managed to capture a young pup to feast upon before the second explosion rocked the arid desert.

The creature that emerged from the wreckage was vaguely humanoid. The hyena looks onward, perking its ears in a tinge of curiosity. There is a shrill cry, much unlike any of the prey  the hyena has hunted.

“You will suffice,” something rumbles, “I must remain alert.”

The hyena does not understand these strange sounds from this creature, but it understands one thing, and one thing only: a primal fear, as old as the desert itself.

The first time the creature sank its teeth into the hyena is a shock to its system, at least two rows of pointed teeth, top and bottom, firmly latched onto the hyena’s spine.

The hyena is lifted into the air, its snout facing the Saharan sun, the creature’s teeth sinking deeper into its back.

Was this…what it means to be prey?

The creature’s teeth connect, and the hyena drops into the sand, its snout buried in a small pile of sand.

Pain.

Excruciating pain, unlike any the hyena had ever felt. 

It is cold.

A stinging pain burrows its way into the hyena’s mind.

It tries to stand, but finds itself too weak.

The creature advances, its teeth dripping with the hyena’s blood.

The hyena limps forward, the primal fear within mounting.

The sky darkens, and a sudden chill overcomes the hyena.

This creature…this…beast has swallowed the sun.

The hyena risks a glance behind it, catching a glimpse of the predator, now a considerable height above it.

The hyena’s snout crashes into the sand as the beast’s tactile paws grip the back of its head.

“Simply delectable,” the creature growls, and it erupts into a familiar sound, the high pitched vocalizations the hyenas use to signal an attack.

The creature’s teeth burrow into the hyena’s neck, serrated weapons tearing out chunks of flesh with reckless abandon.

The creature continues to make unfamiliar vocalisations, interspersed with those high pitched vocalizations.

Is this creature threatened?

A curious warning, but what, exactly…

The creature rolls the hyena onto its back and drives its teeth into the hyena’s stomach, tearing out entrails of which the hyena had never seen prior, all the while signaling to its pack that it is under threat.

The hyena’s vision fades, its body aches, and with its remaining strength, the hyena musters a pathetic whimper.
