Recently I had an opportunity to be fitted with Signia’s Pure 13 Nx hearing aids thanks to the help of Ron McVeigh at Nutech Health and Hearing and Signia’s Bridget Covey. Those that follow this blog know that I previously used Signia Pure Primax 5’s as my first foray into hearing aids. That experience was both eye-opening and very positive. It brought clarity to conversations and a broader range of detail to music at reasonable volumes. (For more on my initial experience as well as more details on the importance of getting your hearing checked, see here ) So, what’s new with the Pure 13 Nx? Quite a bit actually. The main new feature presented in the Nx series is what Signia is calling Own Voice Processing (OVP). It will be helpful to step back before I try to describe the problem they’re solving. Have you ever heard your voice recorded? Typically, it sounds like a slightly higher pitched you. When you hear your voice without any hearing aid, you hear it through the resonating cavities of your bone structure which typically presents it at a lower pitch, especially for men. So imagine that higher-pitch you being magnified in your ears through hearing aid mics. Now you’ll recognize the problem they’re solving: your voice sounds artificially high and loud to you in conversation (and usually with a bit of echo). It’s as if you were listening to yourself recorded in a cave. To reduce this artificial sound of your voice, people would turn down the volume of the mics, but that also reduced your ability to hear others. So, Signia built in the ability to essentially detect and filter your own voice without having to suppress the sound of other voices. In other words, your own voice is filtered down to a natural level while continuing to elevate other voices in the conversation so that you can hear them better and with less strain. Signia, ironically, packs a ton of high tech into the device so you hear your conversations (especially your part in them) as completely natural as if you had no need of hearing aids and weren’t wearing any. But then that’s the ultimate goal, isn’t it? Hearing at its best where the technology vanishes into the background.This would be called a nontrivial upgrade. So if you tried hearing aids (or were afraid to try hearing aids) because of things sounding “weird”, you ought to give these a try.

My own experience of OVP is that it essentially eliminates any artificial flavor to the sound of your own voice. That echoey nature of your own voice vanishes. Moreover, with the directional nature of the mics, your overall perception of sound direction seems enhanced. Note: the artificialness of your voice is mitigated immediately but, over time, essentially vanishes. The hearing aids learn your sound more over time and your voice sounds completely natural after a week or so (except in under some profiles like “Recorded Music” where that processing is turned off; I’ll dive into that later).

There are other additional features as well. The app, now called myControl, has many more features including the ability to control the tinnitus therapy signal in the Universal program, better management of automatic spatial configuration, the ability to capture sound exposure data, the ability to change programs and mic direction based on motion and a much smaller StreamLine Mic (compared to EasyTec) for Android users (Apple phone users don’t require it). Along with new features, they also fixed some nagging inconveniences, foremost among which is the ability to change profiles (programs) without having to detach from a Bluetooth or headphone connection. So much easier!

The myControl app works well, overall, with my LG V30 Android phone. Switching and staying between programs works really well. I don’t have any issues with it dynamically switching programs on me or switching out of a spatial configuration after some period of time (e.g., I have the mics pointing forward, then after some time they used just revert to the default setting). Roughly once a day during very heavy use (especially during this review period), it crashes and restarts, but everything works well. Finally, sometimes it’s slow to initially bring up the app, but now I’m nit-picking. I will say that this app shows Signia’s dedication to improvement. I’ve also had an opportunity to use the StreamLine TV. I can’t imagine how amazing this would be for somebody who has a severe hearing loss. Even for myself, who has a relatively moderate hearing loss, it simply sounds great. Certainly, movies or TV is fabulously crisp and clear with no need to crank up the volume. With my preferred ear domes, you don’t get a ton of bass (explosions or cannons won’t have the oomph you might expect) but Signia even has an answer for that: double closed domes. For me, they’re a bit too warm of a sound signature, so I’ll settle for a less strong bass. Listening to music via CDs or Blueray is great.

So let me dive into the music aspect. I love music. In fact, my initial desire for hearing aids was the fact that my upper register (and some lower register) sound had significantly diminished and to mitigate my tinnitus through the tinnitus therapy signal. I would have to crank the sound to harmful levels to hear some detail. It turns out, as my wife and children have been telling me, my ability to hear conversation was degraded as well. So, I was pretty excited to test out music heard directly through the hearing aids. What an experience! The spatial awareness, as well as the clarity and detail of music, is simply amazing. I listened to Diana Krall’s Turn Up the Quiet, Itzhak Pearlman’s Concert in Moscow which includes a Tchaikovsky piece and Dave Brubeck Quartet’s Take Five. In each case, the detail, clarity, and richness of the mids and treble are fabulous. Moreover, the range of StreamLine TV is just sick. I was listening downstairs in my den, had to a go do something, walked upstairs into the master bedroom and there was no a hesitation, let alone a break, in the sound. It was not until I walked outside the house, opened up my car, and started to get inside to grab something, that the signal was finally breaking up. So, it easily goes through walls, floors, and some pretty serious distance without missing a beat. The only problem you have is people start talking to you because they don’t realize you’re listening to anything and you have to pause what you’re doing and have them repeat again. But the sound is spellbinding. I was talking to a colleague of mine about this and I saw his eyes light up. He has a close relative who cranks the TV up to the point where it’s painful for him to go visit when the TVs on. He really wants to get him into StreamLine TV.

I’ve also had an opportunity to use the StreamLine Mic. This allows streaming to the hearing aids for Android phones (it’s native to iPhones). That means music, phone calls, Audible audiobooks and podcasts all can go directly into your ears. The sound is the same quality as the StreamLine TV. That is, astonishingly good for the mids and treble with subtle bass (again, unless you switch to double closed domes). To me, this is a game changer and one that I can see being adopted in the future in a more mainstream manner, even for those who don’t have hearing loss. This is not quite the future of implants, but close. I can be anywhere, without any bulky, separate headphones and listen to tunes or my favorite book.

Finally, a separate note on channel separation. I listened to a few binaural recordings, that is, where the recording mics are placed in, essentially, a mannequin’s ears so that it is recorded exactly how a human would hear it live. This provides the ultimate in stereo separation. For example, I listened to David Chesky’s Primal Scream: Jazz in the New Harmonic (a binaural recording). Words fail me. The channel separation is stunning. The placement of the drums in, for example, left rear while the sax is jamming in the right front is amazing. It really is as if I’m in the middle of the studio with the band around me going at it. While I listen mostly to jazz and classical, I love all genres. When I need a bit more thump, I pull out my Grado SR125e’s which are an open-backed headphone with a flat on-ear cushion that works well with my hearing aids and their mics.

One of the brilliant things the Signia Nx does is adjust the mic volume automatically based on environmental noise. For example, I was out on a walk with my dog, listening to Amor Towles’ audiobook A Gentleman in Moscow (I highly recommend it) when a car drove by my bit of the sidewalk. The volume pumped up automatically to adjust for the car noise. Very nice; the story continued and there was no need to go back to before the car came by. Equally nice is that you can still hear some environmental noise so that you can avoid dangerous situations like a cyclist calling out “Left” as they breeze by you and you do not hear it because you have headphones that keep noise out. Phone calls are really clear on the receiving end and, I’m told, clear on the recipient’s end albeit you sound like you’re in a tunnel. Your words are clear but you sound a bit different. So, as I said, anywhere I go, I have instant access to my tunes, music, and phone without ever picking up a separate headphone, Bluetooth headset or anything else.

There’s so much more built into these things. Let’s talk programs (or profiles). So, working with your audiologist, you can set up different programs. Mine are Universal (this tech is smart so I leave it on Universal most the time and let it figure out what’s going on and adjust accordingly), Noisy Environment, TV, Recorded Music, Outdoor Sport, and Tinnitus. I’ll use Noisy Environment in a restaurant where the hearing aids will pull in the spatial signature to be closer in (reduces the sound of conversations, plates, and movement so you can focus on the conversation at hand). TV is used when I want the hearing aids to pick up the StreamLine TV device. Recorded Music kills the tinnitus therapy sound and opens wide the sound signature. Outdoor Sport more aggressively manages wind noise and Tinnitus focuses on the tinnitus therapy stream. Here’s the kicker though; the Signia Nx’s are still smarter than you, at least when it comes to hearing. Let’s suppose that I go the Universal setting and manually configure the mics to point to my left so I can listen to my dear bride speaking to me from that side. OK, time to go. As I’m walking, the Nx detects my movement and will reorient my mics forward. Pretty slick.

Honestly, these are a stunning piece of tech. Prior to wearing hearing aids, the world sounded like I had a thick blanket over my head; I could hear conversations, music, and so forth. I could mostly distinguish all of the words, albeit, with effort. It was like hearing everything through the filter of mediocre headphones which muddied down the sound. Now, there is a crispness, sparkle, and clarity which was previously lost. All of this while retaining a more natural sound to my voice. I don’t have to focus as much to understand what’s being said. If that was all, these are worth it. However, I also have the ability to control my sonic environment more than ever. I can adjust the volume down for a loud movie or turn the right side up to hear my wife in the car. I have tinnitus therapy to mitigate the buzz in my head and, now, can connect to my media and phone calls everywhere. Serious sonic seventh heaven.

Since my first born, i think I had felt apprehensive throughout the pregnancy with Livy that I wouldn't feel an emotional attachment straight away, I was petrified the black cloud that shaded my first time as a mother was lingering, ready to pour over what should be new found happiness and content. Soon as Alivia was placed on my chest after what seemed a life time waiting, due to being stitched up from the c-section. I gasped and sunk in all her little features, her tiny perfect nose, small body which seemed weightless compared to Luka-James, my first child. Her long fingers with perfect shaped nail beds. She smelt beautiful like all newborns do. Feeling her on my skin made my body relax, we'd done it. Produced a beautiful, healthy small human. Every ounce of me filled overjoyed, with love. For the first day and night we spent together, I'm sure many other mums will agree it goes so quickly. Your shattered, in pain, zero sleep and constantly feeding. But some how your body is just programmed to run on love. It was day 2 when I had a pang of anxiety. My mother dropped a can of coke onto the table which was next to the hospital cot. And Alivia didn't startle, turn or cry. Completely oblivious. I put it down to being 3 weeks early perhaps their reflexes aren't as strong. When my first born was a few hours old, everytime someone opened the steel bins and left it to shut itself, he jumped. It was the next day the audiologist came round to do the newborn screening, she hooked my tiny little girl up to the device and reassured me everything should be fine, she failed one ear - but I was told it could be due to the back ground noise from other new parents gushing about their new babies. She asked them to be quiet and we resumed the test. She failed again, while doing the tests she was fast asleep completely unaware. The audiologist said she would come back in a few hours and retest Alivia once the cubicle across had settled down and a bit quieter... Two hours pasted, I was beginning to feel riddled with guilt. I texted my mother asking her to get to the ward sharpish. I needed her there beside me to reassure me what ever the result would be fine, I could manage like she had, it didn't change my thinking of this newborn baby only just over 24 hours old had a life of silence waiting for her. My heart broke. My eyes stung like they was being tickled with stinging nettles. My throat formed a lump threatening to strangle me. It was my fault.. She failed two more screenings. Then she went onto another test, which went through any fluid or congestion in her ears, as she was a csection baby and early this was a possibility... Her tiny head was paired with two huge blue earmuffs, again she didn't wince or startle. Blissfully unaware. Failed - refer to audiology. The audiologist apologised and said she will grab her diary to fit us in with an appointment the following Tuesday. (It was a Thursday). And that was that. I waited until she left my cubicle, I was left with my mother standing beside me who's face had turned red and eyes beginning to flood. I knew she was holding it in. Trying to be strong for me. Bless her, she's not one for dealing with emotions. I was given no leaflets, nobody to talk to after, nothing reassuring to read or success stories from the main investigation. Absolutely nothing - I was left bare with the unknown, just emotions and dreaded guilt... Finding out that your precious baby, that you've spent 9 months lovingly growing and vowing to protect in your body, is some what not 'perfect' by the standard you are accustomed to is hard, you experience a range of emotions within seconds which isn't ideal on top of your adjusting body, hormones, pain from surgery and tiredness from spending the first 3 days together with your newborn. You're hit with a pang of guilt, sadness and overwhelming feeling of protection. You blame yourself instantly and worry If your partner secretly does too. After all it was me she inherited her deafness from, I have made her life a challenge. I still live with that tiny guilt now, which prickles my eyes with tears when I think about it. I thought to myself, was it something I done or could have done different while she was growing inside me, did I do something wrong? Should I have lifted that box? Eaten that thing I possibly shouldn't have? Should I have joined yoga or take all these fancy supplements? When in reality the life you spent your first few weeks on leave, dazing about what life she will have, Job she will do, what will her personality be like... Isn't the life you originally planned, her path has taken a little different turn to what you originally dazed about. After we was told Livy was needing to be transferred to audiology, with failing her screenings and needed a in depth investigation into her hearing loss. There was a 4 day wait until her first appointment, instead of enjoying the first week of her life I must have spent my days on google searching for things I could do, reading forums if the baby's hearing came back and everything would be ok at the first appointment. I drove myself crazy. I didn't want my beautiful little girl to face such adversity at such a young age. I truly believe there is a grieving process when we are presented with what we perceive as 'negative' news about your precious little baby. With any challenge presented, it takes time to digest what you're presented with and come to terms with the reality. However time is something that cannot be spent mourning on your own feelings, within 6 weeks Alivia would be fitted with her hearing aids. It went so quickly, we had no chance to digest what was happening, what would happen and how we would bring up a baby, a child, to guide her into a strong independent woman. There is no space for slip ups. With any aid your child is fitted with, unfortunately the parenting is not handed with a training manual. You're on your own... Or so we felt. Having sensory hearing loss myself, although not as severe as Alivia's is, I want to express that deafness is not harmful, it doesn't impose life threatening challenges and I cannot express it is nothing to be ashamed off! I spent years trying to hide my ears spending a fortune on hair extensions to hide from potential new friends or boyfriends. I didn't want to be seen as weird, disabled or different. I wanted to be accepted, liked and loved. Just like every other young teenage girl, I wanted to experience what they was. I so wish I didn't waste my teenage years pretending to be something I wasn't. I wish I had the strong attitude of, this is me. Take me as I am, or miss out on great loyalty. Your baby is perfect, created perfectly and has a life perfectly planned. Now, as a parent it is upto me to ensure she feels perfect. Perfectly normal, perfectly accepted and perfect the way she is. Don't hold back, be proud of them. In my next entry I will go into detail about her appointments at audiology. There are some lows and highs at each one, But we take each one as it comes. Also the challenges we face as she's growing up.

Mapping Appointment #2.

I’m back! I won’t make an entry for Monday as I spent the entire day on Program 4 and things were pretty much the same as they were on Sunday. So this will be just about the appointment I had yesterday and all the goodies I finally got from Advanced Bionics!

I drove my dad and I to my appointment. When we got there and were called in, we sat down in the same room that I went to for the initial activation. That room is the one I’ll always be going to for my appointments. Any other rooms I go to will be the sound booths. I’m secretly dreading for those days where I have hearing tests in those booths. Anyways, my audiologist had this nice box and two smaller ones (they couldn’t fit in the bigger box) and started unpacking most of the things and assembling my Naida.

After he did that, they hooked up the Naida to the computer and started programming it. As they began, my audiologist asked me how the past week went, and I talked about what I heard and how I noticed things were slowly (and ever so slightly) changing. They started with the volume and started increasing that but when they did, it was way too loud (as program four was already borderline uncomfortable) and my automatic response to something being really loud and right in my ear like that is to get scared and then cry. I couldn’t control it, I think because the same thing happened with my first cochlear implant and I got so scared I threw the processor off of my head and hid under the table and cried. Another situation happened later in elementary school where I had fallen and ended up hitting my head where the processor was and it shifted the internal part a little bit so it had completely wiped the programs and when I put the external processor on all I heard was a super, super loud static and it scared me so much I cried. I didn’t wear the processor for a week as that was the soonest they could get me in to the audiologist to fix it. Thankfully, they were able to. So I think my subconscious automatically triggered that response I had yesterday because of my previous experiences. After the volume adjustments, they tried a few different processing strategies and one of them was different than what I was using and I could actually notice that, but I had a hard time telling whether or not it was better. I thought it was, so they kept that. It also made things a bit louder so program three was like as loud as program four and four was even louder than it originally was. I’m currently on program 3 (now called program 1, program 4 is now program 2. They shifted the programs down by two and added two new ones which are the new program 3 and 4. If that makes sense) with the volume down. We’ll see what that processing strategy is like for me, if I do like it. I need more time and to be in a variety of situations to judge on that. Then I can make my decision and they can keep or change it in two weeks at my next appointment.

(I’m coming a week later and editing this draft and no, I do not like it. I’ve been perpetually stuck in program 1 with the volume down because it just is so sensitive. I will have my audiologist change it back to the original processing strategy at the next appointment).

Then, my audiologist was curious about programming my other side with the Naida because he thought someone had said it would be compatible so he gave it a shot. He connected the second Naida that Advanced Bionics had given me (a backup processor). The magnets were able to connect on my head fine, but the computer wouldn’t even allow the software to interact and view files (programs) with the internal processor because it was so old. I knew that the Naida wasn’t compatible with my Clarion internal processor. It is compatible with the Clarion 2, HiRes 90K, and HiRes 90K Advantage internal processors. My left ear has the HiRes 90K Advantage.

After the attempted map, my audiologist showed me the other things that were included in my box, like the ComPilot and MyPilot and the dry-kit. Then he had me sign a form that would be sent back to AB (Advanced Bionics) saying that I had received my order and other things. He said that he had charged one battery partially so I could use it during the mapping and afterwards, but it would only last like four hours. I’d have to set up the charger and charge all of my batteries when I got to my dorm. After all that, the appointment was done.

Now for the fun part! You finally get to see all the cool stuff I got!

I got this really nice and sturdy backpack to hold the box with everything in it. My dad’s jealous of me because of this. The logo on it is Advanced Bionics’. Subtle advertisement, I’d say.

This is what the top of the box is like. The other sides have more pictures. It’s pretty cool. The box kind of has a smooth rubberized feel to it, kind of like how some of the newer book covers feel. The box just about fit in the backpack.

Some of the goodies! It’s like a weird version of Christmas morning.

MORE smaller boxes! those hold different parts like cables, batteries, headpiece covers, etc. Most come with an instruction manual which I think is just...a bit over the top since I already have one giant user manual but I guess it’s useful for those who are ordering the parts individually and not one giant kit.

This is one of the boxes. This is a headpiece color cover. It snaps on the headpiece. I chose Chestnut because it matches my hair the best but is also what I have for my Harmony on the right, and I wanted symmetry.

Another box! This is an RF cable. It connects the headpiece to the processor that’s on my ear. I ordered two: one in beige to match the Harmony’s wire and one in brown (pictured above) because I was curious to see what it would look like.

There’s three UHPs (Universal Head Pieces). I already have two attached to my Naidas. This is different than the color piece that I showed earlier. This is what attaches to my head.

This is the MyPilot. It’s a remote that I can use to wirelessly control the volume and programs and do listening checks. I have to charge this and then connect it to my Naida, which I will do later. (edit-I charged it and used it and it’s pretty nifty. I’ll have to get used to carrying it around with me in classes)

This is the ComPilot. I can use this to wirelessly or manually connect to phones and use FM systems. I wear it around my neck as to keep it in the vicinity of the Naida. However, I won’t be using this for a while I think, since I haven’t gotten to the point of speech recognition on my Naida.

This is one of the boxes that wouldn’t fit in the main box (the other one that wouldn’t fit was the cord for the charger) and it holds the dri-kit. Most hearing devices accumulate moisture over time due to the environment and the wearer, and the sound quality can lessen. So. to keep this from happening, a dri-kit that circulates warm air and absorbs moisture is used.

This is the opened dri-kit. the black part on the side is the on/off button since this is portable. My other dri-kits for my Harmony and PSP (Platinum Series Processor, that one came before the Harmony...it’s old af now) would have desiccant crystals that would be activated when you put the whole thing in the oven for a while. This one is a nice improvement from that.

These are the bricks that go in the back section of the opened dri-kit. They absorb the moisture that may be coming from the processor.

These are my chargers! the one in the back close to the wall is the one used for the Harmony’s batteries as well as the PSP’s batteries since they are compatible. The white one is the charger for the Naida’s batteries. The PSP and Harmony batteries are not compatible with it because they are too wide for the slots. The new charger is so thin and small, it’s amazing. You should see my charger that came before the Harmony’s charger! It’s so big and clunky. Technology is so cool when you can literally see it advancing. Penny for size.

AH IT’S SO THIN AND PRETTY AND PORTABLE AND IT CAN PLUG INTO A COMPUTER BECAUSE IT USES AN USB CORD AH SO COOL

I was going to post videos of how the battery charger works and how the batteries slide onto the processors but I have to embed them but they’re directly from my computer...not YouTube. So it might have to be a separate post. :(

This is a nifty processor carrying case. I don’t plan on carrying this around with me everywhere. It will only really hold my other Naida.

And now for the fun part...the Naida itself and some comparison with the Harmony!

Comparison. On the left is the Harmony, which goes on my right ear. On the right is my Naida, which goes on my left. That is the newer one. They look pretty similar to each other in terms of general size and color. I am using the largest battery available for the Naida, which is the PowerCel 230.

It was kind of hard to show all the microphone locations in one picture so I drew some pink arrows that point to the locations. The one by the dark circle is the headpiece microphone. The two arrows on top of the processor are the front and back microphones. The front is in an area that’s behind the hook while the back microphone is actually on top of the processor. Then the last one is the T-Mic 2 microphone. The T-Mic 2 comes in three sizes: small, medium and large. I picked medium and it fits me fine.

In this picture, the Harmony is on the left and the Naida is on the right. You can see how the Naida is more streamlined and a little bit thinner. You can also see how the headpiece cable connects to the main processor part differently in each processor. The Naida also has very different control buttons compared to the Harmony’s. A better picture of the controls is seen below.

Again, the Harmony is on the left and the Naida on the right. Starting with the Harmony, the little clear square at the top is the LED indicator. It lets me know the battery life and helps with troubleshooting issues. The black circle with a white dot on it is the volume dial. I can’t remember exactly where it’s the loudest and quietest. But generally the 12 o’clock position is the loudest that I’ve used. The white and black rectangular structure below that is the program switch. Right now, it is on program 1, which is normal everyday hearing. When the switch is in the middle, it’s on program 2. Program 2 is for sports and stuff or whatever, I tried it once, didn’t like it, and now I don’t use it ever. When the switch is at the very top, that’s program 3. I use that when I use the Direct Connect cable (a cable that connects to a special earhook that attaches to the processor and the cable plugs into a standard audio jack) to listen to music on my phone or laptop or whatever. That program is set to have 70% of the input from the device and 30% input from the environment so I’m not completely focused on the music and can hear a little background noise which is good if someone needs to get my attention or whatever.

The Naida has VERY different controls. I’m told that these changes were made to make it look more streamlined but also more water-resistant. The black circle at the top is the rear microphone, well, technically the cover of the rear microphone. It protects the microphone from moisture and debris.There is a front microphone but it’s not visible in the picture. The Harmony also has a microphone in the same area where the Naida’s front microphone is, it just isn’t called the front microphone because it has no rear microphone....I think? Next is the oval-y (more like a pill shape) gray area. This consists of the volume up button, the LED indicator, and the volume down button in that order, from top to bottom. The grey circle is the program button. One press on it results in one program change.

The controls of the Naida are quite different and it’s taking time to get used to because I’m not a huge fan of them. For example, I like being able to see what the volume and program are, easily. I can do that with a quick glance at my Harmony, but not with my Naida. I have to memorize how many times I press the volume up/down button and program button. However, the LED indicator does flash the corresponding number of whatever program I change it to like program 2 is 2 flashes, program 3 is 3 flashes, etc. but that’s only when I manually change it. So I can’t just take it off and do a quick glance, I have to press through the programs to make sure I’m on the right one. However, the MyPilot (when I connect it to the Naida) should allow me to see the volume in terms of numbers and the program on the screen while adjusting the Naida remotely. So I can do a quick glance there instead of having to take off my processor and check it. So it has it’s pros and cons.

Another difference between the two Harmony and Naida is the T-Mic.

The Harmony’s T-Mic is able to be bent so that the microphone at the tip is at the front of the ear canal. Some people don’t bend it though. I do, because I feel the bent part provides anchorage because the processor is a little heavy and I don’t use ear molds anymore. So I like that security, although sometimes it will slide out a little but the processor won’t fall off if it does slide out. I also like to have it this way because I feel that this positioning takes the most advantage of the ear’s natural shape and sound funneling ability. Back when I used ear molds only and then made the switch to the T-Mic, I noticed so many subtle sounds. I learned that the room I had been in for the mapping appointments all these years actually had air conditioning running! I couldn’t pick up that quiet hum very well without the T-Mic, but with it I could. I could catch a lot more quiet, subtle sounds.

This is the T-Mic 2. Right now, I’m okay with it because I can’t tell if there is a difference between the T-Mic of the Harmony and this one because my hearing with the Naida is still at such a basic level. The obvious difference is that it’s clear. I don’t mind that. But what I do mind is that it DANGLES in front of my ear rather than going in and facing the ear canal. I feel like I would lose some of that ability to capture subtle sounds when my hearing improves in the left ear because of that. I can’t bend it so that it’s like the T-Mic. Yes, I can bend it, but it just springs back to its original dangly position because it’s so darn flexible. However, what I do like about the T-Mic 2 is that it connects to the main processor a lot more securely than the Harmony’s T-Mic. For the Harmony, when the T-Mic is first put on it’s pretty secure, but over time as the O-ring on the peg that is inserted into the T-mic wears down, the T-Mic wiggles around. (however, you can replace the O rings and that helps) you can actually see evidence of it in the comparison picture up there where the T-Mic is not flush with the processor. So I like having something that’s pretty sturdy I think. Oh, also if you can see that dark little triangle area on the T-Mic 2 where it connects to the processor, that’s the open space for the front microphone.

Up next is the headpiece comparison!

The headpiece on the left is the Harmony’s headpiece. It is thinner than the Naida’s Universal Headpiece (UHP) on the right. The UHP I believe is compatible with the Neptune and the Naida. AB’s Neptune is waterproof! I do like the thinner profile of the Harmony headpiece but I don’t mind the slightly thicker UHP. I think it’s thicker because you have to manually put magnets and spacers in it to adjust the magnet strength while with the Harmony headpiece you have to adjust it by connecting it to a computer with the mapping software.

Comparison of the internal side of the headpieces. This is the side that comes into contact with my skin. The left one is the Harmony’s and is more of a concave shape. The black donut thingy is like a cushion to help protect my skin. It’s nice but it is prone to falling off. With another headpiece (or was it this one? I can’t remember) it came off once but I glued it on and it stayed on fine. The UHP on the right is pretty cool as it’s already soft and has this cool texture that’s not irritating to me. It doesn’t have a cushion that is prone to falling off. It is more of a convex shape though, specifically in the middle where that little circle is. That little circle is slightly more raised than the rest of the surface. All in all, the UHP is fine.

Now for the total package, the Naida in it’s full glory:

Ugh, this isn’t the greatest picture. It looked better on my phone and my phone has a smaller screen than this laptop, so...yeah. But the UHP is connected slightly further back in relation to the processor than the Harmony’s headpiece is in relation to the Harmony processor. So I couldn’t get perfect symmetry with the headpieces as the internal processors are very differently shaped. But it is close, and I’m fine with that. I’ve seen some other cochlear implant headpieces really high up or really far back on the head, so I’m happy with the location.

All in all, the Naida has its pros like the lightness and thinness and new processing strategies, the hella cool battery charger, the longer battery life and the more sleek and modern look...but it also has its cons, like the control buttons and the dangly T-Mic 2.

Ultimate Ears UE 5 CSX Are the Ultimate in Custom Fit Sound

Ten years ago, I had the opportunity to review a pair of custom in-ear monitors. Creating them was a long process that required numerous steps. They still work and sound great. Thanks to Ultimate Ears, though, there’s now a better way to get custom in-ear monitors. Let’s start this review by walking through the process of creating the UE 5 CSX.

I have a new pair of custom in-ear monitors, and the process of creating them was far easier. The Ultimate Ears UE 5 CSX are $499. Let’s check them out.

Before diving into the review of these in-ear monitors, let me talk about the pair I got in 2010. In essence, those earphones are the same as those you see musicians wearing while performing. The molding process was the biggest challenge. In order to get the right molds for the earphones, I had to go to an audiologist. That meant I had to make an appointment, drive over to the audiologist, and be subjected to one of the weirder procedures I’ve ever encountered.

The audiologist put a small piece of cotton inside each of my ears and then squirted molding material into my ears. After that, I had to sit and wait until it dried. It felt incredibly odd and, sitting there while it dried, just felt incredibly stupid. When the molds ready, the audiologist pulled out both the molds and the cotton balls. She then packed the molds up and shipped them to the company. Weeks later, I finally received the box with the earphones. Had I been paying for the earphones, the audiology appointment would’ve cost me a few dollars on top of the cost of the earphones themselves. (At the time, the least expensive version with no design customization was $399 plus the audiologist.) They are phenomenal, but the process of making them was pretty terrible. In addition, I have fewer and fewer devices with a 3.5mm headphone jack, so their usefulness is increasingly limited.

I got the okay to order a review sample and went to the UE. There I was able to select the version I wanted- I selected the least expensive, choose the color I desired- I went with clear, choose a halo accent- I chose silver and add custom initials- I added my initials. I hit “order” and then waited for the next step. I was glad to know I wouldn’t need to head to an audiologist.

Until now, custom-fit earphones required scheduling an appointment with a specialist to get an impression of your ear. Fortunately, the process of creating my custom Ultimate Ears UE 5 CSX in-ear monitors was far easier than creating my previous pair of custom in-ears.

It began when I received their “Fitkit.” Inside the kit there are four soft, gel ear molds, one set was slightly larger than the others and there were one of each size for each ear.

In addition, the Fitkit included a USB cable that ended in special connectors that fit the ear molds. The process is made easy thanks to the free Ultimate Ears Fitkit app. Available for iOS or Android, it walks you through the process in a simple, step-by-step manner. The patented gel-filled molding tips are initially soft and flexible so they can fit into your ears and conform to the exact shape of your inner ear. The app them triggers the electronics built into the cable and begins the molding process that transforms the soft tips from “their initial gel-like state to their permanently hardened, customized shape.”

I tried both sizes of the soft your molds and selected the one that seemed to fit best. The company makes it clear that it is entirely possible that one ear will need the small size, and the other will need the large size. So while having two sets of earmolds is a bit wasteful- one of the sets doesn’t get used and simply gets thrown out- including both sizes means each individual should get the right fit the first time out.

Once I figured out which sizes I wanted, I placed the molds into my ears in a fairly careful process to make sure it was seated appropriately. I then connected the USB cables to each of the ear forms, connected the USB system to my phone via Bluetooth, and launched the customization app.

It walked me through the process, and then it sent a gentle current through the USB cable into the connectors. This seems to have heated the ear molds just a bit, and, after a few minutes, the app told me the process was done.

When I pulled the ear molds out of my ears, what had been a soft material was now quite firm and perfectly matched my ears. You can learn more about the process here.

The process wasn’t done, however. The app then instructed me to take a series of pictures with the ear molds in my ears, but the USB cable disconnected. Raina helped me do so in the app walked her through the various angles. Once all of the pictures were taken, and I had a chance to double-check them, I press the button in the app, and those pictures were uploaded to the company. Obviously, the point of this step is to make sure that they not only have the ear molds, but they have additional information, so the shaping process to create in your monitors from these molds can be as precise as possible.

I packed up the ear molds and the USB system and shipped it back to the company using the included return label. About two weeks later, I received notification from the company that I hadn’t done the process properly, and they couldn’t make the in-ear monitors based upon the molds I had shipped. A new outfit kit arrived, and I went through the process the second time. I shipped that box back and, a few weeks later, I received my custom UE 5 CSX.

Ultimate Ears notes that their custom ears are “molded to the precise measurements of your personal earprint leading to incredible comfort, fit, and isolation.” They also note that creating a pair takes over four hours and 100 “individuals touchpoints” during the handcrafting process. There’s a reason the UE 5 CSX is the least expensive in the line, but they still start at $499!

The in-ear monitors came in a lovely box reminiscent of fine jewelry.

When I opened it, I found a metal storage tin embossed with my name; that’s a pretty awesome touch!

Inside the metal tin were the in-ear monitors, a Bluetooth cable, a charging dock for the Bluetooth cable, a braided cable with a 3.5 mm connector (more on that in a moment), a short USB to micro-USB cable for charging the Bluetooth cable and a cable clip for those times when you’re using the braided wired cable.

The in-ear monitors fit quite well, and I was impressed with their comfort. I was also amazed at how much ambient noise they cut out, thanks to their fitting and sealing my ears as well as they do.

I opted for the clear custom enclosure so I could see the impressive electronics packed inside something so small as these in-ears.

The UE 5 CSX has two finely tuned speakers that are proprietary to Ultimate Ears, called balanced armatures. Here’s a picture of what they look like and what each part of the delicate electronics does.

Other than the simplified process of getting custom monitors compared to what I previously experienced, the monitors stand out thanks to the included Bluetooth cable. Being able to cut the cord is key in 2019, and these monitors do just that.

The cable has Bluetooth 4.1 with multi-point connectivity. They include an inline, omnidirectional microphone, take 2 1/2 hours to charge, offer 110 hours of standby time and is sweatproof.

On one side of the Bluetooth cable, there is a thicker area that houses the battery and electronics. One side has three buttons and a microphone on the other. There are volume up and down buttons on either side and, in the middle, there is a multipurpose button.

The other side has contacts for the charging dock. There’s a micro-USB port on one end.

Charging the Bluetooth cable is a bit of a pain because it requires the use of this small, easy-to-lose, charging dock. I was surprised to see the microUSB connector rather than USB-C and suspect that will change in the near future. I understand the need to use a charging dock, and while it’s the best way to keep that part of the electronics small and light, I’m afraid that I’ll eventually lose the dock and have to buy a new one.

NOISE CANCELLATION: Ultimate Ears are custom fit to create the closest-fitting seal possible between the earphone and your unique ear shape. The advantage of this fit is the physical exclusion of external noise, or what’s called passive isolation. Passive isolation blocks out the sound that is trying to get in, versus introducing new sounds to block out ambient noise. The result is 26 decibels of noise cancellation, as much, or more, than most other earphones on the market.

It is worth mentioning again that, with the earphones in my ears, I get a fairly good degree of noise isolation. That’s part of the beauty of custom in-ear monitors – they are so perfectly molded that they don’t leave any openings. With these to have even a little bit of active noise cancellation, I think they would completely block out sound. They don’t, but the passive noise isolation is quite effective.

SWAPPABLE CABLES: Each pair of Ultimate Ears CSX earphones come with both Bluetooth and auxiliary cables. Both cables are sweatproof, include a mic for making phone calls and feature our award-winning cable connection system, allowing for a quick and easy transition from your Bluetooth wire to your hard-wired, so when your battery dies, or you want to plug into in-flight entertainment, you can do so with ease.

If you don’t want to use the Bluetooth cable, your battery is empty, or you are flying and want to plug into the onboard entertainment system you can simply disconnect the cable from the in-ear monitors and connect them to the included cable.

The cable is a thick braided material that won’t easily get tangled. It has a small control area along one of the thinner cables that go to the in-ear monitors. Like the Bluetooth cable, it has three buttons volume up, by and down and multipurpose button. It works well, but I’m not thrilled by the 3.5 mm connector. Like the micro-USB connector used in the charging dock, this feels a bit like 2016 or 17. Hopefully, an upcoming version of this product will use USB-C for both charging and the cable. For now, however, using the cable with most of my devices requires an adapter.

To turn on the Bluetooth cable, you simply push and hold the middle button. You’ll quickly hear a voice say, “Power on. “The voice then gives a readout of how much charge remains. I just turn them on so I could listen to them while finishing this review and got the feared “charge me” notification meaning I will be able to use them for a while. One good thing about the charging dock is the fact that it has a small battery built into it. That means you can get some additional listening time- up to four additional hours- from the in-ear monitors even when you are away from an outlet simply by connecting the dock to the earphones.

So how do they sound? At a starting price of $499, these are the “entry-level” (which only have two speakers), but they sound fantastic. If you want wood caps, the price jumps $100 to $599. Mother of Pearl caps are $699, and there are additional customizations that add further to the price. Other models include the three-speaker UE 7 for $899, the UE 11 with four speakers for $1199, and the six-speaker UE 18+ for $1499. These prices also increase depending on the material you select for the caps. In other words, I could have selected a pair of in-ear monitors that are significantly more expensive and, for a moment, worried that my “inexpensive” two-speaker UE 5s wouldn’t sound that good. Of course, I was wrong. Even “just” two speakers sound phenomenal when tuned by people with the expertise ultimate ears has.

Of course, you can also use it to create your own custom EQ settings. Once you make changes in the app, those changes are sent to the Bluetooth module in the cable and stored. (As you might expect, the app only works with the Bluetooth cable.)

I’ve been using the UE 5 CSX for a few weeks, and I absolutely love them. The noise isolation means I don’t need to crank up the volume. The balanced armatures pump out plenty of sound with deep bass, clear miss, and highs that are crisp but not overly “biting.” And while, based on their guide, my listening habits would best be served by the UE 11 CSX, I have no complaints about the sound mine deliver. All of this combines with earphones that are so comfortable that I can wear them for hours on end without any discomfort.

This is such bullsh*t. I am 24 have had 0 accidents and 0 tickets. I am moving to another state and my Fing insurance is like $150 month. Then I talked to a female coworker my age with the same type of car and she has 2 speeding tickets her insurance is $137 a month. WTF? It is a known fact that almost all women are horrible drivers. Sure I guess males my age may do more reckless things but at least we have some Fing common sense. Women in todays society seem to lack this. Because they are never held accountable for any of their actions. O sweety you drank a fifth last night and banged some fat nasty guy well its not your fault its the guys fault. Sorry for the rant I just feel that my car insurance should be lower than hers because I have no tickets not higher anyone else agree?

Alright Y!A? :) Right, so I'm 17 and I'll probably be doing my driving test pretty soon because I'm far into lessons and I've passed my theory test already. (UK - Northern Ireland, Belfast) I'm just wondering what tips you guys out there have maybe from first hand experience or what your friends, siblings or general family have done etc. I'm getting around 3200 in the June when I turned 18 because of a car crash I was in when I was like 9 so I'm hoping to get a car + a year's insurance for around 2500 at the maximum. (Hopefully) I'll probably get a car of a maximum price of about 1000 because in reality I don't need anything fancier than that, the max engine size I'd consider would probably be 1.2 and I'd want my insurance to be such that I can use the car for work such as delivering pizzas or chineses etc. so I have more options trying to find a job atm. I'm just wondering what tips you people have? Could I realistically get insurance for 1500 (Max) or under on a 1000 (Max) car with a 1.2 (Max) Litre engine? I might have to borrow money off my parents and pay them back when I'm 18 if I pass a good few months before my birthday. I'm not coming here telling you to tell me where to get cheap car insurance, I hate questions like that lol cheap car insurance doesn't exist for 17 year olds because we're all boy racers Bla-bla-bla, it's head melting! I just want to use my car to drive to college (5 minute drive), possibly work in depending on if I get a job at this bar or not and drive to peoples' houses if I need to and other general driving.
