As you unfold the umbrella and lift it overhead and step out into the rain, you make a note of visiting the cloning department to ask about Brett and whether he’s real or not.

You lose yourself in thought but make it to your car, stepping into the drivers seat in a mirrored motion similar to Brett and do your routine, turning the car on and checking the mirrors and backseat, turning the radio on then pulling up navigation. And as you tuck the closed umbrella against the shotgun seat, you glance back and see Brett scrolling through his phone and glance up to catch your eye and he smiles, waves again cheerily.

Good lord he’s not real. Did Hallmark start back up their cloning company again? It’s not Christmas yet.

You put the car in drive, passing his in the parking lot as you pull out to the main road leading to the highway for your route home. You try not to think of him when you sing along to the radio when the lyrics of love songs catch your throat.

I was intending to romance Rook and Beck because they seem so obvious choices to love (although both have their own issues to confront), and then I began to read the asks and... I fell for Lars. This always happens to me, I always go for either a goofy himbo or a cold distant asshole with trust issues when it comes to IFs romances. The thing is, the few moments of affection you can get with Lars are so precious... And the fact he is so direct and honest is good. It makes him far less of a red flag than Rook, in my opinion. Rook may have his issues and reasons to not have pursued MC romantically (even if he had crushed on MC or knew MC had a crush on him), but the fact he is dishonest about his feelings doesn't appeal to me.

But Lars... I just know my MC would he a bittersweet beam of sunshine next to him (bittersweet because I don't think anyone on MC's circumstances would feel well enough to be just sweet), and would love Lars a lot. And do anything Lars says (because, since I'm in control, MC is a sub, sorry).

I know this fandom is capable of nuance because I see plenty of in-depth discussions about severely morally gray (more black than gray tbh) discussions of characters like IDW Prowl and IDW Megatron. So I know that the reason people don't talk about IDW Optimus isn't because they're not capable of taking an interest in complex/controversial characters.

At this point I'm literally convinced that it's just bc what the fandom wants Optimus to be is a dumb himbo team dad (and the malewife to whichever character they ship him with). So because IDW Optimus can't be simplified into a silly himbo or shy sad uke twink, and his character writing deliberately asks the question of "is Optimus a good person and how much do good intentions matter compared to the harm caused along the way" instead of making Optimus the Unquestioned Moral Paragon of the series, people react by utterly shunning and refusing to acknowledge or write about IDW Optimus the same way they're willing to write about other IDW characters who are far worse than he is.

That, and most ppl haven't even read the comics and so the version of IDW Optimus they think is utterly an asshole, is a caricature that only exists in their own brain constructed from out of context comic panels of him and nothing else lol. Like when people see the panel of OP beating up Prowl and going "omg he's evil" ignoring/not being aware of the fact the reason he did is bc Prowl tried to kill an entire planet of people. As just one of many examples. Bc god forbid people actually read the comics and see why he made those decisions in context, let's just cherrypick the worst incidents with zero explanation and act as if that's the sum of his character

I also read the Maiden Lane series (I finished the last book last week) and I actually think book 2 was my favorite, I devoured it, I think all the negative reviews there are on Goodreads made me lower my expectations and I was so pleasantly surprised. It was such a different “ballroom romance” and never afraid of going to more difficult and “immoral” places. I think generally speaking there is too much purity discourse around historical romance and I was just surprised by how unapologetically messy all the characters are in her books. Do you have other books with that vibe? Also thank you a lot for the rec cause I think my perception of what makes a good historical series totally changed after reading her books

I'm so glad you liked it! That book gets a bad rep because it is "cheating", which I think is so unfair tbh. I don't feel like historical romance cheating is often the same thing as contemporary cheating, lol. Was Hero engaged? Sure. Did she have any feelings for that man or vice versa? No. Her brother was forcing her into the relationship. She had no true power. Her giving her virginity to a man who was not her intended was truly one of the only acts of agency available to her, and it was risky as hell.

But yeah, a lot of historical readers, unfortunately, are there to basically act out their purity fantasies. Like, it's fine if the characters fuck outside of wedlock, but only if it's monumental and viewed with shame. Non-virgins must be widows. Sex should result in pregnancy, etc. There's not a lot of consideration given to the fact that a) these books are inherently inaccurate and b) even if they were true to life, people had casual (by the standards of the time) back then, many marriages occurred because sex was had out of wedlock, people anticipated the wedding often, women took lovers. Not everyone felt this huge amount of guilt over it. Hoyt is so good at that.

For a similar vibe, I would absolutely recommend Joanna Shupe, who wrote a few Regencies, a few Victorians, and mostly Gilded Age books. Her characters love sex and are immensely messy (so much drama, so many revenge plots, so many heroines defying their fathers, so much excess) aaand often make bad decisions at first. I would recommend basically anything by her, but standouts include:

The Uptown Girls Trilogy: About three daughters of a rich New York man--the oldest one, who fucks daddy's lawyer/fixer; the rebellious middle child, who asks a casino owner to mentor her but dun dun DUN he really wants to ruin her dad; the baby angel, who gets tangled up with a gangster.

Fifth Avenue Rebels: Four friends get into some bullshit after a messy Newport party--the first is childhood friends to lovers with a heroine engaged to another man; sex lessons by a himbo rake to a shy wallflower type; former fiancees who hate each other hooking up at a masked sex party; and two assholes who've been circling each other the whole series finally becoming fuckbuddies, except he wants LOVE.

My Dirty Duke: a novella about a heroine who wants her father's BFF

Wicked Deceptions: her Regency books about: a duchess who disguises herself as a courtesan to get pregnant by the husband that abandoned her; a former scandal of a woman tangling with an uptight earl; a woman who cross dresses in order to do some good in the world getting found out by her dude friend who thinks he's going insane.

Nicola Davidson writes some fun books about people who walk on the wild side--she especially focuses on sex and queer issues. Start with her novellas, like Seven Sinful Nights (heroine agrees to be bad man's mistress for a week to avoid. her horrid in-laws) or Duke for Hire (the heroine pays a down on his luck duke to deflower her). Davidson does a lot of research and is super knowledgeable about things like sex toys, sex work, etc, in the past.

Eva Leigh writes really frank, honest books with morally complex characters. Lady Viper and The Bastard is her Georgian novella about a pair of rivals (both in their 40s) who fall in love as they scheme to tear two lovers apart; her Last Chance Scoundrels trilogy is a really good series about three friends (two of whom are brothers) who have to find wives within a year after ruining a much-vaunted wedding. Does a good job of exploring a more diverse (in several ways) England with artistic circles and parties and hedonism. Offers characters from both aristocratic and working class backgrounds.

Adriana Herrera's Las Leonas series focuses on a group of friends who leave the modern Dominican Republic and go to Paris to find love. The first book is m/f, the second f/f. They explore a world you rarely see in historicals, with sex (not all straight) and politics and art and subversive thinking.

You might also like Sierra Simone's historicals--she writes great erotic romance. Try The Chasing of Eleanor Vane (m/f, heroine is engaged to a loser but is seduced by his older uncle) and The Last Crimes of Peregrine Hind (m/m, one hero abducts the other for revenge, BDSM ensues), and The Conquering of Tate the Pious (f/f medieval, abbess falls in love with a lady conqueror who also conquers ladies).

Stacy Reid writes some deliciously messy books that sometimes feel like send-ups to old school historicals. Try her Wedded by Scandal series, which I love, featuring absolutely nobody who isn't messy, and tons of public sex.

Grace Callaway writes some really hot, fun, messy, mystery-solving historicals. Give her Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series a try. It's Charlie's Angels, but historical, and these girls are constantly getting into trouble and falling for men who go "I must spank yhou for this, 10% as punishment and 90% because I'm hard". They're delightful.

Of course, you should definitely try Sarah MacLean as well. Her Rules of Scoundrels series (my favorite) focuses on four casino owners; Bareknuckle Bastards centers three outcasts who run Covent Garden; and her current Hell's Belles series focuses on a girl gang of friends who fuck shit up, basically.

Alexis Hall's Something Fabulous is a m/m historical romcom about a pair of heroes who go on a wild goose chase for the uptight one's fiancee after she runs away. The next book, Something Spectacular, focuses on the queer world even further with a genderfluid lead falling for a castrato soprano (fun fact: entirely accurate that castrati GOT THE FUCK LAID EVERYWHERE). If you want less whimsy and more drama, his A Lady for a Duke focuses on a trans heroine falling for a duke and having to deal with telling him about her past. Also something historicals often avoid--queer people have always existed!

1. The thing that got you hooked on hockey

in a really convoluted way that is a story for a different time i started listening to a sort of fandom leaning hockey podcast. i googled jeff skinner's name and went "oh", then saw gifs of burky and my himbo of the moment was selected.

i had to move back home (a place that's as not-hockey market in the us as you can think of..) for family reasons and my younger sister and i were spending a lot of time at home. i basically bullied her into watching nhl weird videos with me on tv and then we started watching games together. we followed the avs for the 19-20 season heavily!

covid season + other reasons made me stop paying attention for a while, but now i'm back. i'm very bad at being loyal (sorry) to any specific team and have my players i collect instead & am currently paying attention to my failsons (pens, habs and sabres)

2. Your first ever fandom friend

i was mostly on twitter for my hockey fandom activities, so shout out to my crop of friends from very far away on my phone from there! but i guess it was my sister, actually~

3. The jersey you would most like to own

a stars blackout jersey (aka the reason my layout is robo at all lol) i saw that hideous neon green and said "that's for me". OH and if i had exorberant amounts of money, a lunar new years speciality jersey. otherwise, i am not a jersey/merch purchaser no.

So Zefron

I haven't shared him public's so have a couple pictures I have of him (I'm yet to draw him tho)

Anyways, he is built like a bean stalk, hella tall and shaped like a shrimp because of it

He is a goofy goober but severally depressed, he acts like Goggles superficially but deep down, he got issues.

He is also Orca's BFF, he forced himself as his friend XD

Everyone told him not to approach Orca cuz he was "dangerous" but he beat all odds and became friends with him, it's hard not to like Zefron lol.

And going off of that, he is very danger prone and always finds himself in trouble, even when he's actively trying to avoid it. For being so tall you'd think he'd be able to see what's going on around him better but the clouds probably block his vision lol

But do not be fooled, as he can be very scary when he wants to. Orca's never seen that side of him before, but that's mostly because he uses his serious tone to scare off Orca's work place bullies.

Both Orca and Zefron are dangerous but for different reasons

Orca looks scary but is actually just really shy and ontroverted

And Zefron looks nice, approachable (and is, honestly) and is extroverted, but can be really dangerous if pushed just far enough.

Orca looks depressed but isn't, actually, traumatised, yes, but not really depressed lol

Zefron on the other hand....yeah (I am still planning his past tho, so idk what else to tell you on that :,])

In a himbo there is depression and in depression there is himbo

Zefron can be strong, sure, he works at grizzco after all lol but he isn't nearly as physically strong as Orca is, but his tongue is way sharper, and feelings can sometimes hurt more than a broken bone

I have a HC that, although octolings are smarter than Inklings, to me, inklings are more emotionally smart. They can't solve a puzzle for the life of them, but they seem to cary their hearts on their sleeves and follow it rather than their brains, which is what makes them "dumb" while octolings follow their brains more than their heart (sure there is a balanced but I'm just saying what each is more prone to follow)

And that is what I'm going with Orca and Zefron

Hi Lena, thank you for sharing your absolutely fantastic game with us! I had a question! Do you ever play through the game yourself just to play it? What kind of character do you play as and who do you romance (if anyone)?

Hi anon, thank you so much for the fun question! It's been a long time since I've played the game all the way through just for the experience of playing it (most of my time is consumed with either writing the damn thing or testing it, which doesn't really need me to play as a cohesive character and is more randomized), but when I do play, I tend to try two different builds. The main one is based off of the protagonist of the original ShoH novels--Arainia Niriviel--so I model my character as closely as I can to her, choosing the choices that I think she would make, emulating her physical appearance (dark hair, violet eyes, beige-gold skin), etc. She's an Elf-raised Battle-Mage who was taught at the Circle, has high Nerves of Steel and Heart of Gold, medium-high Silver Tongue and Bright Mind, and extremely low Razor Wits! :') Her main romance is intended to be Blade, as in the novels, but really I let her flirt with/romance everybody in sight because it gives me power to make as many people fall in love with me as possible, even if it leads to a complete mess down the line. 😂 Arainia is pretty reckless and tends to spend the Words of Power left and right, even when she doesn't technically have to lol.

The other character I tend to try out is Hyperia Wildegarde, a Ket-raised Mage with rose-gold hair and turquoise eyes! She's more studious and serious than Arainia is, so her highest traits are Bright Mind and Silver Tongue, with medium-high Razor Wits and lower Nerves of Steel. Her specialization varies based on my mood, but she's most frequently an Enchanter, but is sometimes an Elementalist! She's very deliberate, so she never uses the Words of Power if she can help it and is pretty utilitarian in her thinking, trying to aim for the outcome that involves the least amount of risk or loss while netting the greatest benefit (rather than basing her decisions strictly on morals, feelings, and instincts, which is what Arainia tends to do). Her main romance also tends to vary on my mood (since she's less 'concretized' and more experimental than Arainia is), but she tends to focus on Red (whom she is exes with) or Tallys, though I have a feeling that relationship will end in heartbreak for both of them! I headcanon that she has a fat crush on Lavinet that will wane over time, and that she's a good deal more angsty/noble and dignified than Arainia, who sort of has Trouble's dumb himbo jock energy lol.

There are a few other characters I've dabbled with from time to time: Kellen Talward, who's usually a Norm-raised Wild-Mage but sometimes a Healer, who's shy and sweet and gentle in nature and is head-over-heels for Riel; and Nichothades Vespertine (Nick for short lol), who's well-meaning but sort of funnily pathetic and tends to fail upwards into situations, whom I haven't really solidified a romance for yet (I'm suspecting Ayla or Briony, though Lavinet is a contender) but will probably be my stupid mode MC when the time comes!

Oh is this about my use of the word himbo? Well - I really wanted to be approachable in this blog. I'm shy, so I don't often make the first move. I'm also a dude, and dude's don't really have the best reputation on tumblr, so I kind of leave you alone if you're a woman unless you either like a ton of my posts, or maybe if I'm feeling surprisingly confident suddenly lol - so I hoped the word would make people not feel intimidated or whatever to send me a message or follow me. Also - I think tumblr doms generally have the same lame aesthetic and I wanted to bring something different. Not all tumblr doms, etc etc. I also just think it's a funny word. And there's something about the image of myself that I see in my head when I think that word that makes me happy. Sometimes all I wanna be is the puppy boyfriend that is just always so happy to see you and can't wait to follow you around and do whatever you want to do!

I appreciate that you think I'm intelligent. I'm really so not. I've just lived a long time and I generally pay attention. I do have so many varied interests though. I love learning about pretty much anything - as long as the person or book telling me about it is doing so with passion.
