The Beats Inside My Head
Tumblr media
Hi! I'm going to run through my discography and add some details for you. This is my debut project, a 7 song mixtape I produced while I was coping with my grandfather's death. Before this I was making mashups on Soundtrap and learning how to to dubstep on Music Maker Jam. Originally, I was going to title these tracks after lines and give the project a different artwork but due to the events I changed up all of that. I'm sure why is understandable. There's not much to say here really sadly besides that this is a unique mix of electronic music and instrumental hiphop with an ambient feel to some of the sounds. It was fun learning to produce like this and I'd recommend Don't Go and Come Back.
However I will say it was a big change for me to release this project. At the time, I was working on being a YouTuber with one of my best friends, Daryan. We don't talk too much anymore but he designed the Gp on my first official piece of merchandise technically. It's not released or anything but I have it on in promo shots. I was making content about my interests at the time. Playing Minecraft, making custom Bionicles and giving them storylines, editing Pokemon AMVs, writing sketches, all the classic stuff. Unfortunately almost all of it is gone. One big collaboration AMV is still released, which I helped direct and edit for. It was a fun time but I decided to switch to music cause it became my biggest calling. I then proceded to delete all of my old videos, which honestly thinking back is heartbreaking. Were they cringe? 100%. Do I still want them up? Yes. Why? Well, it shows growth. Think, one day I'll be a bigger artist than I maybe ever imagined. If those videos were up, people from all over the world could see my true start, look at it then look at me then and say "hey, I'll try it!" Which is exactly why to this day I keep up my entire discography, unlike most annoying underground rappers who delete almost everything previously once a song blows up. There are a few AMV leftovers that I decided to keep up because I hadn't fully deleted them, check them out here!
But that's enough of that for now. In a way this album was me starting a legacy. I picked a sound, a style I liked and went for it. It really is easy to tell through this record alone what makes me different to the pears I surround myself with now. You can hear the DNA that is this album in my modern music, albeit way more defined and quality controlled. All I've done is improve in the last 8 years. Honestly typing that out just horrified me, I've been a content creator for a decade, around half my life, and a musician specifically for most of that too. It's crazy to think about but I like going back and listening to older records sometimes. Reminds me of where I came from.
With the above link you can listen to this tape. It's a swift listen, right around 18 and a half minutes. It's worth trying out, I still let some of the songs play when I listen to them. I want to shout out my grandfather too to end this. In a way I feel his death made me who I am, including the artist part of me. So I want to thank him for that, and may he rest in peace. I see him in my visions but honestly? I think about seeing him in the next place every single day.

Two Ontarians came together and created the awesomest new musical instrument??
One guy is a musician from Ottawa and has been toying with the design of a new instrument for 30 years, then he met a clockmaker and woodworker from Guelph who was eager to make this instrument a reality.
And it's absolutely beautiful. It's cylindrical and played with a bow, 10 equally spaced strings that you bow in different spots to change tensions and make a sound.
And the genius of it musically, is that it's cyclical so as you keep rotating the cylinder, you come back round to the first notes you struck (if you keep your bow still), and so you get these rhythmic, periodic repeating patterns that sound really ethereal, calming and hypnotic.
Apparently it made some listeners cry, and I was surprised before hearing it. Skilled playing can make people cry, sure. Melodies, harmonies, all that stuff, definitely. The open instrument itself? If you just eyeballed bowing a cello you'd drive people far away, I'd reckon. I certainly would.
But I saw a clip of it in action, I can definitely see it now.

‘Connie’s theme’ might actually be one of the most beautiful and personal instrumentals a fictional character has ever gotten. I’m NOT kidding when I tell you her theme violently rips the actual heartstrings out of my chest.
I just love how gentle it is! The major-minor progression throughout the song makes it feel like you’re listening to her journey as a developing teenager/her personality on its own. You really walk through her many feelings and sides to her: she can be unsure of herself as she’s carefully experiencing many firsts with Steven, but she can also be so very confident, funny, silly, empathic, caring and smart. I feel like I can really hear all of this back in the song!
I also like how the violin slowly takes the lead throughout her song, because it’s the instrument her parents initially made her play. I like to think the violin taking over the melody in the second half is Connie taking control over her life: finding a purpose and individuality after learning how to set healthy boundaries towards her parents, and after she learns how to set emotional boundaries for herself. Learning to be with Steven, but not live for just him.
I also like to think the tiny keyboard “sparkles” symbolise Steven helping her along and guiding her on this journey.. Do not get me started on the use of this theme in the show (like with stevonnie) because I will NOT shut up. Actually I could yap your ear off about all of the music in SU like the diamonds themes etc. This one just sticks out to me a little more 💗
Excuse the rambling but music just makes me feel so darn much. I AM walking down the aisle to this song period. If you read all of this 5 big booms to you 💥💥💥💥💥

i've listened to preacher's daughter plenty of times but somehow just recently realized how stunning the transition between august underground and televangelism is.
hearing isiah's footsteps is one thing and extremely haunting but that chord that grows and grows and then explodes into televangelism.... good lord.
i've always loved how both ethel's physical death on earth and her ascension to heaven are represented here and the way you can hear the exact moment the transition happens makes it hit so much harder.
also if i recall correctly hayden has said televangelism is her favorite song of hers and that makes me so happy cause it was one of the main standouts of the album for me the moment i first heard it and songs like this are often dismissed as "just interludes" even though they can be some of the most emotionally powerful moments on an album.

Ari Aster popped off so hard with collaborating with Colin stetson on hereditary. Out of all of his films, hereditary has the best soundtrack, and it shows. You literally can't get better when it comes to "surreal horror music" than Colin Stetson. Beau is afraid and midsommar's soundtracks are both made by Bobby Krlic, who is good, but noticeably NOT as good as Colin Stetson.
DUDE. For the love of fuck please listen to Colin Stetson. Anyone who sees this, listen to his albums "New History Warfare Vol. 2" and "Never Were The Way She Was". PLEASE. for the most part, every song is created in one take, and every sound is made by one saxophone.
"but how can it be one saxophone? I can clearly hear some percussion instruments and vocalizing" that's the saxophone. He recorded NHWV2 live, in a studio, with 20 microphones in different places to capture different sounds. That means every song was played in one attempt, with no looping sounds. The only time you're hearing something that isn't Colin Stetson is when someone else is singing or playing another instrument, but the songs are overwhelmingly just Colin Stetson going fucking bonkers on the sax in a way I am 100% CONFIDENT YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD BEFORE.
Let's take Judges, one of the most listenable songs in NHWV2: The percussion? That's the sound of the keys being slammed down, picked up by mics on the back of the sax. The high and low notes are created by him opening or closing his throat. That's normal right? Except that there's also a wailing vocal line. That's HIS vocal chords. He is actively singing while playing sax.
But there's one more thing. Those 3 things already being grouped together weren't enough, he also never. stops. playing. The full 5 minute runtime of the song, the saxophone never stops. This is because he's using a technique called circular breathing which I can't even do WITHOUT an instrument. But basically, blowing out air stored in your mouth while breathing in through your nose. And he does this for five straight fucking minutes. It is a beyond Herculean feat of strength to be able to do that for 5 minutes alone, and add on top of that playing an instrument in such a unique way AND actively vocalizing???? Yeah. Fuck it. Whatever. Colin Stetson is the best saxophonist in human history. Ari Aster HAS to bring him back for his next film. Bobby Krlic is cool but Colin Stetson fucking blows every other instrumentalist out of the water.
