The Long Beach Grand Prix: Indycar Unification.
After the Champ Car finale in 2008, Indycar was unified. 2009 would be the first time that the Dallaras came to Long Beach. That being said, it would be a familiar podium.
After coming up short in 1998 and 1999 in CART, Dario Franchitti would get his Long Beach Grand Prix win in 2009 with Chip Ganassi Racing. 2008 winner Will Power was second in a part-time ride with Verizon and Penske which would turn into a full-time ride from 2010 onwards, while Tony Kanaan was third for Andretti Green Racing, Dario's former team.
This was Franchitti's first win with Ganassi and the first after his disastrous stint in NASCAR.
Speaking of drivers that were good in Indycar but disastrous in NASCAR, Danica Patrick was fourth in another Andretti car. Yup, I know that Danica was rough in NASCAR and that damaged her reputation, only for her to damage that reputation even more ever since retiring, but it should be noted she was a legitimately good driver in Indycar.
TK and Marco Andretti were her 2009 teammates (as well as Hideki Mutoh and, occasionally, Franck Montagny) and Danica finished the best of them all in the standings that year, finishing fifth behind the two Ganassi and Penske cars.
2010 saw Ryan-Hunter Reay join the newly renamed Andretti Autosport, and he took his first win with the team at Long Beach. This actually came somewhat unexpected, as Will Power was dominant in the early stages of the race, however, a pit limiter issue followed by lapped traffic led to Power losing out to both Reay and Justin Wilson.
Thus, The IZOD Andretti of RHR won, then the Charter/Z-Line Dreyer & Reinbold of Wilson finished second, and the Verizon Penske of Will Power had to settle for third.
You've noticed I haven't been mentioning chassis or engines here, and that's because at this point, all the Indycars were running Dallara-Hondas. Honda was the only engine left after 2005 and around the same time, the Panoz/G-Force chassis was fading out of the limelight.
I guess Panoz saw Dallara winning on the IRL side so decided to refocus their efforts on building a new spec car for Champ Car.
Problem is the Panoz DP01 chassis debuted in 2007, which would be the last Champ Car season.
Thus, Dallara was the last chassis left standing.
Their IR05 would see one more race in 2011. Here, the Long Beach Grand Prix was once again won by an Andretti Autosport driver in their first year with the team, only this time, it was Mike Conway in the #27. He'd win from the Penske of Ryan Briscoe and the Ganassi of Dario Franchitti.
2012 would be a new era for Indycar, as the Dallara DW12 engine entered the sport, along with Chevrolet and Lotus joining Honda as engine manufacturers.
Lotus making engines? But...Lotus don't even make their own engines! What were they doing making an Indycar engine?
Good question hypothetical viewer.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. The Lotus engine was really bad, the work was subcontracted to Judd, and they'd leave at the end of 2012. Very bizarre episode in Indycar history.
As for the Chevy, well, it was once again developed by Ilmor and unlike Lotus, it was pretty good actually.
So good, in fact, that it would get two thirds of the 2012 podium. Will Power finally won the Long Beach Grand Prix in his #12 Verizon Penske Chevrolet, ahead of the only Honda-powered podium finisher, that being Simon Pagenaud in the #77 HP Schmidt-Hamilton entry. Third would go to James Hinchcliffe, driving the #27 GoDaddy Andretti Autosport car, which was also a Chevy.
Going into 2013, Long Beach would really start to cement its place as the second most important race in Indycar. A lot of the ISC/NASCAR owned tracks that formed the backbone of the IRL disappeared after 2010 due to Indycar and ISC not being able to form a deal, while most of the CART stalwart races like Road America, Laguna Seca, and Portland wouldn't find their way back onto the calendar until the mid to late 2010s.
Thus, the longest running races in Indycar were Indy itself, obviously, Long Beach, and Toronto.
Longevity wasn't the only thing going for Long Beach, because this was also the era where Indycar was leaning on double-headers heavily to pad out the calendar. Detroit, Toronto, and Houston all hosted two races, meaning that while there were 19 races on paper, it was really more like 16.
This made Long Beach's star burn brighter as it approached its 40th anniversary.
Honda would bounce back in 2013, sweeping the top four, but it was a rather unexpected podium. Takuma Sato won for AJ Foyt Enterprises over Graham Rahal for RLL, and Justin Wilson for Dale Coyne Racing. Dario Franchitti was fourth for Target Chip Ganassi Racing.
2014 was the most chaotic Long Beach Grand Prix since probably 1998. Josef Newgarden, Ryan-Hunter Reay, James Hinchcliffe, Will Power were fighting for the lead, RHR tries to pass Newgarden, they crash, Hinchcliffe is collected, Power gets through, but Takuma Sato, Jack Hawksworth, Tony Kanaan, and Helio Castroneves are collected as the track is nearly blocked.
Sato, Hinchcliffe, RHR, Newgarden, and TK are out on the spot.
Thus, we get another bizarre podium, as Mike Conway, who has now switched to a no-ovals role at Ed Carpenter Racing, wins the race over Penske's Will Power in a Chevrolet 1-2. Carlos Munoz finished third in the now Honda-powered Andretti Autosport car, the #34 run in alliance with HVM.
2015 brought the aerokit era of Indycar, with Wirth producing the bodywork for the Honda teams whilst long-time Corvette Racing team Pratt & Miller produced the Chevrolet bodykits.
Chevrolet had Penske, Ganassi, and the merged Carpenter-Fisher-Hartman team (CFH) as its main teams.
Honda had Andretti, Rahal, and Schmidt-Peterson as their main teams.
Chevrolet...blew Honda out of the water in 2015.
Long Beach was no exception, as Scott Dixon won in the Target Chip Ganassi Racing #9, followed by Helio Castroneves in the Auto Club Penske #3, and Juan Pablo Montoya in the Verizon Penske #2 completed the podium.
We're not finished yet though, because Simon Pagenaud in the Penske Truck Rentals Penske #22 was fourth, Tony Kanaan in the NTT Data Ganassi #10 was fifth, Sebastien Bourdais in the #11 Hydroxycut KVSH was sixth in yet another Chevrolet, and Josef Newgarden was seventh in the #67 Hartman Oil CFH car.
The first Honda was Marco Andretti in eighth.
Absolute domination.
2016 would bring the closest finish in Long Beach Grand Prix history as Simon Pagenaud in the #22 PPG Penske Chevrolet held off Scott Dixon in the #9 Target Chip Ganassi Chevrolet by 0.3032 seconds. Two other Penskes followed with Helio Castroneves in the Auto Club #3 completing the podium whilst Juan Pablo Montoya in the Verizon #2 was fourth. Takuma Sato was the top Honda in fifth.
2017 finally brought Honda back into contention with a 1-2 finish. James Hinchcliffe in the Arrow/Lucas Oil #5 for Schmidt-Peterson would hold off Sebastien Bourdais in the Trench/Geico #18 for Dale Coyne Racing. Josef Newgarden, now at Penske, would complete the podium in third.
After three short years, the aerokits were phased out. Poor, suffering team owners like billionaire Roger Penske and Indycar, Indy Lights, Formula E, Global Rallycross, Pro Mazda, and V8 Supercars team owner Michael Andretti complained about the high cost of aerokits with all their sensitive aerodynamic parts.
Thus, for 2018, the universal aerokit was introduced.
2018 saw Alexander Rossi win in the #27 NAPA Honda for Andretti Autosport over Will Power in the #12 Verizon Penske Chevy, and Ed Jones in the #10 NTT Data Ganassi Honda.
2019 was similar, with Alexander Rossi in the same car winning over Josef Newgarden in the #2 Hitachi Penske Chevy, and Scott Dixon in the #9 PNC Bank Ganassi Honda.
There was one key change for 2019 though, and that was that Toyota's longrunning sponsorship over the LBGP finally expired. Honda took over their rival's race and would use it to promote their Acura luxury brand.
Unfortunately for Long Beach, certain world events led to the 2020 race being cancelled outright while in 2021, the race was delayed into being the season finale. An odd choice since the Long Beach Grand Prix had been an early season round since 1976, occasionally even serving as the first round of the season.
2021 would continue the Andretti winning streak, though now with Colton Herta in the #26 Gainbridge Andretti Honda. Josef Newgarden was second once again in the #2 Hitachi Penske Chevy, and Scott Dixon was once again third in the #9 PNC Bank Ganassi Honda.
The biggest story that weekend, however, was Alex Palou finishing fourth to win his first championship in the #10 NTT Data Ganassi Honda.
After playing the bridesmaid the last couple of races, in 2022, Josef Newgarden would finally get to win the LBGP. Romain Grosjean was third in the #28 DHL Andretti Honda, whilst Alex Palou was third in the same car he won the championship in a few months prior.
2023 would see Andretti and Honda regain their crown, with Kyle Kirkwood in the #27 AutoNation car winning over teammate Romain Grosjean in the #28 DHL car. Marcus Ericsson would be third in the #8 Huski Chocolate Ganassi Honda.
Colton Herta and Alex Palou would make it a Honda top five.
Take that 2016 Chevrolet!
2024 would see another Honda podium sweep. Scott Dixon's magic fuel tank won over Colton Herta and Alex Palou, who was now in DHL colors as Ganassi took over Andretti's long-term sponsorship.
This brings us to this year's race.
2025 saw Kyle Kirkwood win again in the #27 PreFab Andretti Honda over the #10 DHL Ganassi Honda of Alex Palou, and the #7 Velo Chevrolet for Arrow McLaren.
Not much else happened in the race. The most noteworthy thing I can think of is Sting Ray Robb led a chunk of laps by going off-strategy.
Indeed, the biggest drama of Long Beach lately has been the off-track stuff. Kevin Kalkhoven, who you might remember from last week's Champ Car blogpost, died in 2022. A few years later, this would kick off a firestorm as his estate was selling off his 50% stake in Long Beach, and NASCAR was heavily interested in buying that stake to take over the LBGP as their southern California date.
See, Fontana, the big oval that had hosted CART, Indycar, and NASCAR races from the late 90s until 2023, was being downsized by NASCAR and they were selling off parcels of land for warehouses, cashing in on that almighty inflated California real estate market. The plan, initially, had been to keep a piece of the land and redevelop it into a short track, but already in 2024, it seemed pretty clear that this wasn't going to happen.
Thus, NASCAR started exploring other opportunities. A new street circuit in San Diego has been floated a couple of times, but when a stake in Long Beach became available, NASCAR was ready to pounce.
Thankfully for Indycar, Long Beach was secured.
Gerry Forsythe, who owned the other 50% of Long Beach dating back to the Champ Car days, stepped in and bought Kalkhoven's stake. Come late 2024, Forsythe would sell the whole thing to Indycar's parent company, Penske Entertainment.
Long Beach has been secured. It'll remain an Indycar event.
NASCAR will have to find something else in SoCal.

Aurora Supercomputer Sets a New Record for AI Tragic Speed!
Tumblr media
Intel Aurora Supercomputer
Together with Argonne National Laboratory and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Intel announced at ISC High Performance 2024 that the Aurora supercomputer has broken the exascale barrier at 1.012 exaflops and is now the fastest AI system in the world for AI for open science, achieving 10.6 AI exaflops. Additionally, Intel will discuss how open ecosystems are essential to the advancement of AI-accelerated high performance computing (HPC).
Why This Is Important:
From the beginning, Aurora was intended to be an AI-centric system that would enable scientists to use generative AI models to hasten scientific discoveries. Early AI-driven research at Argonne has advanced significantly. Among the many achievements are the mapping of the 80 billion neurons in the human brain, the improvement of high-energy particle physics by deep learning, and the acceleration of drug discovery and design using machine learning.
Analysis
The Aurora supercomputer has 166 racks, 10,624 compute blades, 21,248 Intel Xeon CPU Max Series processors, and 63,744 Intel Data Centre GPU Max Series units, making it one of the world’s largest GPU clusters. 84,992 HPE slingshot fabric endpoints make up Aurora’s largest open, Ethernet-based supercomputing connection on a single system.
The Aurora supercomputer crossed the exascale barrier at 1.012 exaflops using 9,234 nodes, or just 87% of the system, yet it came in second on the high-performance LINPACK (HPL) benchmark. Aurora supercomputer placed third on the HPCG benchmark at 5,612 TF/s with 39% of the machine. The goal of this benchmark is to evaluate more realistic situations that offer insights into memory access and communication patterns two crucial components of real-world HPC systems. It provides a full perspective of a system’s capabilities, complementing benchmarks such as LINPACK.
How AI is Optimized
The Intel Data Centre GPU Max Series is the brains behind the Aurora supercomputer. The core of the Max Series is the Intel X GPU architecture, which includes specialised hardware including matrix and vector computing blocks that are ideal for AI and HPC applications. Because of the unmatched computational performance provided by the Intel X architecture, the Aurora supercomputer won the high-performance LINPACK-mixed precision (HPL-MxP) benchmark, which best illustrates the significance of AI workloads in HPC.
The parallel processing power of the X architecture excels at handling the complex matrix-vector operations that are a necessary part of neural network AI computing. Deep learning models rely heavily on matrix operations, which these compute cores are essential for speeding up. In addition to the rich collection of performance libraries, optimised AI frameworks, and Intel’s suite of software tools, which includes theIntel oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler, the X architecture supports an open ecosystem for developers that is distinguished by adaptability and scalability across a range of devices and form factors.
Enhancing Accelerated Computing with Open Software and Capacity
He will stress the value of oneAPI, which provides a consistent programming model for a variety of architectures. OneAPI, which is based on open standards, gives developers the freedom to write code that works flawlessly across a variety of hardware platforms without requiring significant changes or vendor lock-in. In order to overcome proprietary lock-in, Arm, Google, Intel, Qualcomm, and others are working towards this objective through the Linux Foundation’s Unified Acceleration Foundation (UXL), which is creating an open environment for all accelerators and unified heterogeneous compute on open standards. The UXL Foundation is expanding its coalition by adding new members.
As this is going on, Intel Tiber Developer Cloud is growing its compute capacity by adding new, cutting-edge hardware platforms and new service features that enable developers and businesses to assess the newest Intel architecture, innovate and optimise workloads and models of artificial intelligence rapidly, and then implement AI models at scale. Large-scale Intel Gaudi 2-based and Intel Data Centre GPU Max Series-based clusters, as well as previews of Intel Xeon 6 E-core and P-core systems for certain customers, are among the new hardware offerings. Intel Kubernetes Service for multiuser accounts and cloud-native AI training and inference workloads is one of the new features.
Next Up
Intel’s objective to enhance HPC and AI is demonstrated by the new supercomputers that are being implemented with Intel Xeon CPU Max Series and Intel Data Centre GPU Max Series technologies. The Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) CRESCO 8 system will help advance fusion energy; the Texas Advanced Computing Centre (TACC) is fully operational and will enable data analysis in biology to supersonic turbulence flows and atomistic simulations on a wide range of materials; and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) will solve memory-bound problems that underpin the design of future fusion powerplants. These systems include the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) Cassandra climate change modelling system.
The outcome of the mixed-precision AI benchmark will serve as the basis for Intel’s Falcon Shores next-generation GPU for AI and HPC. Falcon Shores will make use of Intel Gaudi’s greatest features along with the next-generation Intel X architecture. A single programming interface is made possible by this integration.
In comparison to the previous generation, early performance results on the Intel Xeon 6 with P-cores and Multiplexer Combined Ranks (MCR) memory at 8800 megatransfers per second (MT/s) deliver up to 2.3x performance improvement for real-world HPC applications, such as Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO). This solidifies the chip’s position as the host CPU of choice for HPC solutions.

A lazy summer afternoon in Allahabad, Aman is heading back home from his ISC coaching classes. Although it's just a 10 min walk , It often takes him over an hour to reach home. On his way back he pensively stares at the old buildings, and the new ones, and compares the two. He likes the old ones. They have so much history and character. He takes in the hustle and bustle of the busy market that he comes across next. He knows what grocery he has to buy— His mother gives him a list every morning before he leaves for school. He knows which shops he has to make stops at, where he may find the churmura wallah from whom he buys churmura everyday. Everything is as it is supposed to be be and he loves it. He is in no hurry to reach home. The repitition of these monotonous task is like the repitition of a beat in a melodious song: much welcomed. So much he drags his mundane chores at the market that one may think he doesn't even want to reach home.
He does not.
His reluctance to reach home as early as possible after a long day at school and coaching class does not stem from a lack of love and affection from his family. It is because of the opposite. His father, Shankar Tripathi, an agricultural scientist, who despite being busy working on a new strain of cauliflower which other than being an unappetising black in colour, he claims, is also maggot resistant, finds enough time to mollycoddle his only son. Aman's mother, Sunaina, whose full time job is to pamper her son,is predictably much, much worse.
A loud honk from behind startles Aman. He turns to a sight that immediately makes his heart jump out of his mouth. His brow is suddenly lined with beads of sweat and his pulse starts racing.
"Tripathi Jee, glad I found you. Look, new bike!," Chuckles a boy of his own age, sitting on a brand new motorcycle, revving it up to show off its brand new engine. "
It is Sarthak Khurrana, the coolest boy in his school according to both Aman and the school magazine's year end poll.
Sarthak Khurrana twists his body while being seated on his new bike and taps on the backseat, gesturing Aman to come sit. "Chaliye, Sangam ghuma laaye aapko, Tripathee Jee," he says.
Aman, ready to kill more time, jumps onto the backseat and off they go to Sangam. The holy Sangam, which is the confluence of the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, literally translates to union.
On the backseat Aman observes how weirdly Sarthak's ears jutt out of his head, almost at right angles, but they do not look bad on his face. "Nothing can look bad on THAT face," concludes Aman as he gets flustered at the thought. He isn't sure how he feels about Sarthak. They seldom interact at school. Whenever they do, it is usually Sarthak who initiates and he always calls him "Tripathee Jee". As a result whole school has started calling Aman that. Popular kids like Sarthak have that kind of power. Being referred to as "Tripathee Jee" makes him feel old and uncool. " Nobody, not even I, will ever call Sarthak "Khurran jee," thinks a smiling Aman.
They leave the city traffic behind. Aman stares at the way wind sweeps Sarthak's hair. The sky is a shade darker and the air is a touch cleaner and cooler. They take a turn to start on a worn out road that runs alongside Akbar's fort, and then turn onto a sandy kaccha Road that finally leads them to the sandy bank of Sangam.
They find a secluded spot where sonorous sound of bells being tolled at the nearby Hanuman temple, calls from mallahs beckoning tourists to go on boat rides, Screeches of hawkers selling Chaat, Pakoda, Samose, Churmura, Aloo dum etc. drown in the gusts of cool breeze that's rushing to them from the water body. There is barely any distinction between these sounds. They blend with the swishing of wind and form an ominous symphony that just hangs eerily in the background.
"It is peaceful here," says Aman awkwardly.
"So how did you like my new bike. Makkhan na?"
"Acchi hain. This red colour matches your skin tone. You look good on it."
"Hain?'
" I m..mean...this bike suits your personality," stutters Aman.
" Oh..Thanks, "smiles Sarthak and looks up in the air, "I can just hope Bhumi thinks it, too. I have been meaning to ask her out on a date for so long now. But ..tum jaantein ho ..her family is so conservative."
The Sky is blood red in the presence of the sun that is now slowly sinking below the horizon line. The river looks like someone has put its entire extent on fire. It is kind of dark now. These two men are laughing together over an anecdote when one suddenly leans over and rubs his finger behind the other man's ear and gently kisses him on lips.
The kiss lingers for a few second.
The other man suddenly breaks contact, pushes back, and then hits him in the face. He falls down. The other man kicks him to his heart's content and then leaves on his bike.
The one left behind is in pain. He is bleeding through his broken nose. He is scared. He feels so lonely. He takes his phone out and calls someone.
Devika's phone rings thrice before she answers.
"Hello, Kartik ..where are you ? Are you ok? ..hmm..You pinch your nose hard and don't move alright.. I'll be there in no time! "
She hangs up.
The sun is an orange ball hanging on the edge of the earth. Aman sees Rajni coming towards him on her bike, orange sun's reflectinons blazing on the goggles she is wearing. She looks like an angel to him. He has been crying.
" Tuh coaching Se Yaha kaise Pahuch Gaya..aur phir main hi milti hoon tujhe lift maangne ke liye? Jab man Kiya phone ganghana Diya. Number delete Kar mera," rambled Rajni.
"Sarthak got a new bike,"says Aman.
" Ayee ..Hot stuff Hain kya Yaha," She calls Sarthak Hot stuff while he calls her Goggle.
"Hot stuff date pe hain abhi with Bhumi. He wanted me to tag along so it doesn't feel like a date and madam Bhumi doesn't feel uncomfortable. He wanted me to be a third wheel. I said no."
"Ha ha ha," laughs Rajni, " don't worry he has broken many hearts before yours.Mine included. You will get over it"
" What do you mean "broken heart"..why would .."
"Whatever, Aman, " she speaks over him," chal peeche baith. let's go home," and kick-starts her bike to life again.
Meanwhile Kartik is staring at the burning waters of Yamuna river in Delhi. His broken nose has stopped bleeding but his shirt is soaked with blood through and through. An Activa Scooty stops behind him. He turns to find a concerned Devika with frozen packs and a first aid box.
" Baith isspe," she points toward Activa and Kartik follows her order. She starts attending to his wounds, " Kya zaroorat hain tujhe itna adventurous hone ki? pata toh Kar liya Kar acche se. Aur thoda apna horniness control main rakha Kar. India hain yeh.America Nahi," she rants mindlessly.
Kartik looks despondent. Devika holds his face in her hands, turns it to herself, and says," Cheer up, Kartik. I hate to see you like this."
"I am so alone Devika. Don't I deserve at least one happy ending?" He says and bursts into tears.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They both get on her Activa. Kartik's riding. They ride along the bank of the Yamuna River.
"The river Yamuna doesn't even look like a river anymore ," says Kartik.
" You should see it in Allahabad, Kartik. It is glorious there. It unites with the river Ganges there and forms the most revered place in the whole world," Says Devika as she grabs him from behind and rests her face on his back, " I'll take you there."

First Look: The Volkswagen Touareg R - Plug-in Hybrid
Volkswagen is set to add a range-topping new premium model to its flagship Touareg line – the Touareg R. The versatile model’s 340 kW (462 PS) plug-in hybrid drive offers an innovative blend of superlative performance and electric efficiency. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the new SUV always starts in the all-electric E-MODE for zero emissions. The battery capacity is designed so that the Touareg R can cover the average daily commute under electric power. Like all Touareg models, the new R version comes with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. 4MOTION and the powerful drive system (700 Nm of torque) means the Touareg R has also been homologated for a maximum trailer weight of 3.5 tonnes. The premium model can cope with this maxi- mum trailer weight even in E-MODE. As the first plug-in hybrid SUV in the world, the Touareg can also be fitted with the trailer maneuvering system Trailer Assist. And yet another first: the Touareg will be available with Travel Assist for the first time. The premium model will be the first Volkswagen to boast assisted driving (automatic longitudinal and lateral guidance) up to a speed of 250 km/h.
First R model with plug-in hybrid. The new flagship model was designed by the Volkswagen R performance brand, which traditionally develops the sportiest models in the Volkswagen range. The Touareg R represents a paradigm shift – it is the first Volkswagen R model to feature a plug-in hybrid drive. It is also the first time a hybrid model has been the most highly-powered Volkswagen. The extremely well appointed Touareg R, which features the Black Style exterior design package along with 20-inch alloy wheels & R-Line interior trim (including Vienna leather), is set to enter the market in the second half of 2020.
Intelligent electric performance. The Touareg R is the third plug-in hybrid model in Volkswagen’s European product line, following in the wheel-tracks of the Golf and Passat. The Touareg R is the first all-wheel drive model in Volkswagen’s PHEV range, and is also another milestone in the realignment of Volkswagen R that started in 2019. Jost Capito, managing director of the Group’s in-house performance brand, explains: “We are currently vigorously expanding the Volkswagen R range. Following the compact CUV models – T-Roc R1and T-Roc Cabriolet R-Line2 – Volkswagen R is introducing another sport utility vehicle within a very short space of time – the Touareg R, which has a quite unique position and unrivaled charisma.” The Touareg R is synonymous with a new and intelligent level of electric performance in segment of large touring SUVs.
Authentic, avant-garde, practical. Volkswagen R is responsible for the visual and technical configuration, and with it the conceptual direction of the new model. The Touareg R is based on the third generation of the product line launched in 2018, which in turn was an evolution of the model first introduced in 2002. All current Touareg models feature a dynamic and elegant design, maximum safety and long-distance comfort, state-of-the-art connectivity and a largely digitized cockpit. The overall concept is also designed with a high level of everyday usability in mind. Some 60% of all  Touareg owners in Germany and 40% in Europe also use their SUV as a towing vehicle – remarkably high figures. The Touareg is often driven by sporty, active people who value the utmost safety, outstanding driving comfort, intuitive control and cutting-edge connectivity. The new Touareg R has been designed specifically for this extremely tech-savvy customer group. For the first time, they now have a performance model that can be driven temporarily in all-electric mode with zero local emissions. The new Touareg com- plies with the Euro 6d-TEMP-EVAP-ISC emission standard.
Extended powertrain range. The SUV product line is currently available with one turbocharged petrol engine (TSI) and three turbocharged diesel engines (TDI). The V6 TSI engine delivers a power output of 250 kW (340 PS)3. As a V6 TDI, the Touareg is available with two output levels: 170 kW (231 PS)4 and 210 kW (286 PS)5. The current most powerful Touareg is a V8 TDI with 310 kW (421 PS)6. Volkswagen is adding a range-topping model in the form of the new Touareg R.
Top R dynamic performance. As a typical Volkswagen R model, the Touareg R provides ultra-dynamic performance. Like at the touch of a button, the driver just has to press the accelerator to access the full output of the electric motor (100 kW/136 PS) and the turbocharged V6 petrol engine (250 kW/340 PS) as required. The two drive systems can then be combined in a boost function to use the vehicle’s dynamic reserves – for instance to over- take another vehicle quickly and safely – and to exploit the full system  power of 340 kW (462 PS). The maximum system torque is 700 Nm.
All-wheel drive hybrid. The hybrid drive of the Touareg R essentially consists of a 2,995 cm3 V6 turbocharged petrol engine, the electric drive motor and a lithium-ion battery (energy capacity of 14.1 kWh) built into the luggage compartment underbody. The power electronics convert the direct current of the battery into alternating current for the electric drive motor. An 8- speed automatic gearbox (with Tiptronic) and a transfer box transmit power to the front and rear axles (4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive). A center differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution (Torsen traction) acts as a transfer box for the flow of forces between the front and rear axle. A maximum of 70% of the drive force reaches the front axle and up to 80% reaches the rear axle.
All-electric drive up to 140 km/h. When first started, the Touareg R uses only the electric motor if the battery is sufficiently charged. This ensures that the SUV comes as close to zero emissions as possible, especially on short journeys. This hybrid strategy also provides the greatest savings potential. The Touareg R can be driven in all-electric mode at a speed of up to 140 km/h; above this, the V6 TSI is activated automatically – or at any time using kickdown. The maximum speed of the SUV is electronically regulated at 250 km/h.

The NIOS Board, an Indian board that is acknowledged by the government, is another excellent alternative for students looking for admission as CBSE private applicants.
Process for Submitting the CBSE Private Application for the Exam
The application for CBSE is private and should be purchased by the candidate.
Both the CBSE offices and Patrachar Vidhyalaya provide it. The directions must be read before filling out the form.
Before the deadline, the completed form must be delivered to the board's regional officer together with the required exam money, three passport-size photos that have been properly signed by the applicant and backed up in the case of a teacher, and the completed form.
A late fee will be charged if the application is submitted after the deadline.
Fee Refundable Scheme If the Application Gets Denied
Tumblr media
The prospective candidate will be given a refund for the full amount paid if their application is declined. However, the applicant is unlikely to get a refund if it is discovered that they provided a fraudulent statement or false certification.
Private candidates won't be permitted to provide practical subjects for the exam, except those who previously failed and enrolled in a regular course of education at a school connected to the Board during the previous academic year.
Regular Students Are Not Permitted to Sit for the CBSE Private Exam
Regular applicants are not allowed to sit for the Senior School Certificate Examination of the Board as private candidates if they failed to advance to class XII in the school associated with the Board or any other recognised Board.
Take Admission for the CBSE Private Exam with Patrachar
Patrachar Vidhyalaya advises students to get enrolled in the NIOS board as it carries the same importance and value as CBSE, ICSE, ISC, or any other government board in India.
Noise is the best option for such CBSE students to take admission to the NIOS Board, get a better percentage, and save a year through this board.
Apart from the educational advantage, this open schooling system provides students with the opportunity to focus on other activities, such as running family businesses or preparing for competitive exams.
Despite not doing as well as you wanted in Class XII exams or engineering exams, it does not mean that all hope is lost. There is always an opportunity for another try in the future.
The possibilities for you in this world are practically infinite, a wealth of opportunities waits. Be ready to work hard and extend your reach beyond your limits in order to make your dreams come true.
Conclusion
Patrachar Vidhyalaya, a CBSE private education centre, would like to wish all students success in their education and exams for greater opportunities in the future. Just be prepared to put in a lot of effort and extend your arms to reach for them. All students are wished luck in their studies and tests by Patrachar Vidhyalaya, a private CBSE school, to have more opportunities in the future.

Gravitricity secures £912k BEIS grant to develop UK multi-weight energy store - The Manufacturer
Tumblr media
Gravitricity has secured a £912,000 grant from the Department of Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to develop plans for a multi-weight energy storage system – to be built on a brownfield site in the UK.
The Edinburgh-based energy storage specialists will work alongside control and simulation experts Industrial Systems and Control (ISC), winch specialists Huisman and Careys Civil Engineering to deliver the front-end engineering design (FEED) for a 4MWh, multi-weight system using a custom-built shaft.
They will also work closely with a site partner to secure the planning consents required to develop and build their multi-weight gravity energy store at a grid-connected site in northern England.
The Gravitricity system stores electricity by raising and lowering heavy weights in a shaft. Analysts at Imperial College predict the firm’s patented multi-weight concept will offer long duration energy storage at a lower levelised cost than alternative technologies, including lithium ion batteries.

The feasibility project will complete in late 2022 and will provide the information required to commence build of the full-scale commercial prototype multi-weight gravity energy store immediately thereafter, subject to securing planning permission and the necessary funds.
The £1.5m feasibility project follows the success of the company’s 250kW demonstrator, which was commissioned and operated in Leith, Edinburgh, during summer last year.
The company is also advancing plans to build a full-scale single-weight project in a disused mine shaft in mainland Europe, to commence this year.
The FEED study is being supported by the BEIS Longer Duration Energy Storage Competition, a competitive funding scheme to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative energy storage projects which can contribute to net zero. Gravitricity secured a grant of £912,410 towards the £1,520,684 project cost (representing 60 percent funding intensity for SMEs).
Gravitricity Managing Director Charlie Blair says: “Finding low-cost, long-life ways to store renewable power will be crucial in the world’s journey to net zero. Our multi weight concept has been proven by our Leith demonstrator where two 25 tonne weights were configured to run independently, delivering smooth continuous output when lowered one after the other. We were able to demonstrate a roundtrip efficiency of more than 80 percent and the ability to ramp up to full import or export power in less than a second.
“A Gravitricity system with multiple weights offers a lower cost per MWh of energy stored – more weights give more mass (or MWhs) whilst the number of hoisting systems (which forms a substantial part of asset cost) does not increase.
“This project will demonstrate multi-weight use and control using a single set of hoisting equipment and will pave the way to custom projects which can be built wherever they are required,” Blair says.
The project has been welcomed by UK Government Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Hands who said:
“Driving forward energy storage technologies will be vital in our transition towards cheap, clean and secure renewable energy.
“It will allow us to extract the full benefit from our home-grown renewable energy sources, drive down costs and end our reliance on volatile and expensive fossil fuels. Through this competition we are making sure the country’s most innovative scientists and thinkers have our backing to make this ambition a reality.”
The second phase of the project will see Gravitricity commence construction of a first of kind commercial prototype system at a grid-connected site in the north of England. The company anticipate that a substantial amount of the mechanical design and optimisation of hoisting equipment for fast response applications will be directly transferable from this project to all future applications, as will the control systems being developed.
As future production ramps up, Gravitricity and its partners intend to produce modular systems which will bring fabrication costs down considerably. At the point where multiple schemes are being implemented, the consortium will be able to purchase and operate their own shaft sinking equipment using, offering substantial savings and further improvements to the levelized cost of energy storage.

VARTECH TECHNOLOGY:  AN UNBELIEVABLY EASY METHOD THAT WORKS FOR YOUR GAS TURBINE
To understand how VARTECH Technology can work incredibly well for your Gas Turbine, it is important to understand varnish and the problem it creates.
Varnish is a broad term covering various kinds of deposits in oil systems. Some types are rigid and firm, others sticky, and others are commonly referred to as sludge. However, the common factor is that they typically begin from the degradation of the oil in the system.
Varnish usually forms and sticks in areas that are extremely hot or very cool and sluggish.
Now, measuring or finding varnish is an enormous challenge since varnish does not turn up in the oil, but on the metal surfaces. The only way to identify varnish is to see it on a surface or to experience its effect. For example, a sticky valve is an apt indicator of the presence of varnish.
It is triggered in many ways. The cycle of varnish begins with something that upsets the lubricant’s stability, such as excessive heat. This can lead to the degradation of the oil, resulting in the formation of impurities. For a while, these impurities often remain dissolved in the oil, causing no harm. But, as more and more accrue, however, they stick together, forming insoluble, suspended submicron particles and once they stick to metal surfaces, they become varnish.
Varnish accumulation reduces a lubricant’s heat transfer properties and causes your system to run hotter and hotter. The consequences won’t just jeopardise your equipment — it will cause de-rated equipment, unpredicted shutdowns, inefficient operation, enhanced maintenance labor management, and spending, higher costs, and lost profits for the owner.
In some turbines, varnish focuses on servo valves, causing them to stick and either delay movement or refuse to move, which can send the turbine out of operation, causing a complete shutdown. In a peaking turbine, one that is held in reserve for peak demand, stuck servo valves can lead to failure to start. Downtime and repair costs can run anywhere from $100,000 into the millions.
Varnish buildup in gas turbines is a big concern for our industrial lubricant customers. While some cleaners in the market are effective in certain circumstances, they may also present several issues. But, VARTECH Technology has addressed the issues of greatest concern, namely water separability; oxidation stability; and seal compatibility.
Residual dispersal/detergent cleaner remaining in the oil system when the oil is changed can ruin the fresh oil that is installed. To ensure that the cleaner is expunged from the system, a full flush is required.
This is where VARTECH™ Industrial System Cleaner (ISC), can come into play. A non-solvent-based solution that can be added straight to oil during operation, VARTECH technology cleans varnish and sludge from the system before a regular oil change. In exhaustive lab testing against existing products, Chevron VARTECH™ ISC showed very good seal compatibility, water/oil separability, and oxidation performance.
To understand how VARTECH Technology can be an incredibly easy method that works for your gas turbine, we can take a case in point of offshore production platforms with three turbines on board. The turbine in question had a severe varnish issue and the oil cooler had been contaminated, rendering the temperature rise to where the operators would have to shut the turbine down to replace the cooler.
VARTECH ISC was added and over one hour, the main oil header temperature dropped around 10 degrees, from too high to normal. The product had an immediate effect on the operating conditions of the oil cooler. In comparison, when the previous dispersant/ detergent product was used, it took two days to see a temperature drop.
That product was also blocking the filters in the system frequently with varnish debris. VARTECH ISC had no such filter plugging effect over the two-day test period. Subsequent testing continued, it revealed that VARTECH ISC outperformed many other commonly used cleaners in cleaning efficiency, effectiveness, and system compatibility without drastically affecting water separability and oxidation stability. This compatibility also reduces the performance impact for the fresh oil when flushing is unfeasible, and it does not need to be used in combination with a varnish filtration system. It is not recommended not to leave any varnish cleaner in a system indefinitely. Simply add VARTECH ISC before a scheduled oil change, and the removed varnish debris will come out with the old oil.
