Temporary foreign worker permits were issued to bail out companies who “couldn’t find” local labour - because they refused to offer reasonable wages or benefits, or just plain didn’t want to risk Canadians calling out unsafe labour practices - and let them “temporarily” bring in people from other countries who do not know our labour laws and would accept worse conditions

They’re also not allowed to properly apply for permanent visas and shit to become immigrants because The Bullshit™️ levels are off the fucking charts. Come over to be exploited but oh you’re not allowed to stay?

This is why no one could find a job despite all the places “hiring” in 2022 and SO MANY companies are finally being fined for abusing the system but not enough to make them fucking stop)

i don't want to discourage anyone from pursuing this path, but i do want to say that even when you are immigrating on easy mode (family sponsorship, rather than work or study-related immigration), this shit is still time-consuming and expensive.

if your primary goal is to experience a less hostile political climate, i would highly recommend working on improving your own community. if your primary goal is to live someplace safer for you as a woman, queer person, or non-white person, i would highly recommend moving to a blue state before i ever recommended trying to immigrate outside the u.s.a.

As a history major, it is TERRIFYING to me that we are not more concerned with what is happening right now in the world. (I should say, being Canadian, this is acerbated by Trump’s very concerning talk of annexing my country). But when we say history repeats itself, it’s not just a saying, there ARE patterns in history that repeat themselves and are warning signs. Right now, there’s so many that all I can think about is that it’s only a question of time before it all blows up.

So, Canada has decided to stop sending arms to Israel after an NDP motion. The Liberals made major amendments to it so as to firmly condemn Hamas as well. It's kind of a mixed bag. Honestly, it's naive of me but I didn't expect there would still be so much outrage, even if the motion did call for an acknowledgement of Palestine as a state. All the Conservatives voted against it - to be fair, some of them wanted to wait for the motion to be passed because the amendments were super last minute and the Bloc Quebecois were annoyed that because of this there wasn't a French translation.
