More complete list of ways that websites and books about gardening shamelessly misinform and confuse people
Using any combination of cultivar names, species names, genus names, and common names to refer to plants, leaving well-intentioned gardening noobs fighting for their lives in a lawless wasteland. Just look at this Better Homes and Gardens article on salvia.
Salvia is a genus of plants containing hundreds of species, including culinary sage, rosemary, and many species used as ornamentals. The Better Homes and Gardens list ruthlessly mixes common names for sage species with cultivar names, without giving the binomial Latin species name at all for a single one...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and refers to two totally different plants only as "purple sage" in the same listicle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On that note, acting like "variety" is just as important as, or interchangeable with, "species." Just read an article that said "some varieties of this plant can be invasive, so make sure to check which ones are prohibited in your area!" No. NO. No specific cultivar of an invasive plant species is going to be non-invasive. In fact, introducing new cultivars of an invasive plant will make the invasive species problem WORSE because that's new genetic material. 'Bradford' pears are invasive in the US, 'Cleveland' pears are also invasive, because they're BOTH PYRUS CALLERYANA, but the website you're buying them off of doesn't SAY that, AUGHH
Referring to plants that are enthusiastic or aggressive growers as 'invasive.' I falsely believed so many native species were invasive simply because some dumbass article decided to call them "invasive" for the crime of being able to grow in a lawn. The same websites will turn around and say that a 100% virulent invasive species "can become aggressive in some gardens" WHSFDHHKKK???
Gardening books describing a gorgeous native flower that doesn't die instantly when you think a negative thought about it: "Invasive. Evil. Kill on sight." Gardening books describing one of the worst known invasive plant species in human history that's decimating ecosystems as we speak: "This plant can be a teensy weensy bit vigorous."
totally failing to explore what it means for a cultivar of a plant to be "sterile." Here's the thing. The 'Bradford' pear was supposed to be sterile, but it was not, the cultivar was just made up of clones of the same plant, and most plants can't fertilize themselves. When another cultivar of Pyrus calleryana is planted close to it, such as the 'Cleveland' pear, surprise surprise, THEY AREN'T STERILE.
IIRC it is possible to produce truly sterile cultivars by breeding a plant that can't make seeds/fruits and cloning those plants by vegetative propagation. A cultivar of cloned, genetically identical plants with completely unchanged reproductive ability is NOT STERILE, it is just banking on no other cultivars of the plant ever existing nearby. Which is deeply stupid.
Yes, "cultivars" (the names in single quotation marks next to the name of the plant in a nursery label) are generally just groups of clones of the same founding individual. I'm not a fan of cultivars because they're basically Petri dishes for breeding disease. E.g. The Emerald ash borer was able to so thoroughly decimate ash trees in the USA partly because the gene pool of planted ash trees in American cities was 2-3 individual trees big. Now ornamental boxwoods seem to be dying off en masse in my area, and the reasons are probably similar.

Do I have more important projects with actual deadlines I should be working on? Yes. Did I write a silly failed shower sex ficlet instead? Also yes. Enjoy!
Also, they don’t actually do anything but there is some suggestive language/jokes so minors be gone!
When it came to showering, Eddie and Steve had very different ideas about the ideal water temperature.
Eddie’s used to fast, lukewarm showers that border more on the cold side. Years and years of conserving the hot water for Wayne and his aching bones have taught him how to be quick and adjust to the cold water hitting his body. If he’s honest with himself, he prefers the cold water now. It energizes him in a way a cup of bitter coffee never has.
Steve, on the other hand, is used to warm showers with water so hot it’s a degree away from scalding temperatures. The type of showers that leave the mirror fogged up and his body flushed red when he steps out fifteen or twenty minutes later.
Naturally, the first time Steve and Eddie decided to shower together was an utter disaster.
It was meant to be intimate and sexy. Steve had mentioned that he’d never fucked anyone in his shower before and Eddie, always eager to take a first away from Steve, had sprung up from the plush mattress and dragged him into the en suite.
They stripped the clothes off each other in a quiet sort of fervor. Eager, but also wanting to savor the moment. It wasn’t often they got to see each other like this. Standing bare in the warm lighting of Steve’s bedroom. Usually, they spent their time, naked on their backs in beds. This was different.
Marveling at Steve’s adonis-level body for too long always made Eddie a bit twitch, so after a moment or two he tugged him into the shower to officially get things started. At least, that was the plan but the minute the warm water landed on Eddie’s skin he let out an ear-piercing yelp and leaped so high, he nearly hit his head on the ceiling above.
“Jesus H. Christ,” he swore.
“What the hell, Eds?” Steve shouts back, slicking his wet hair back as the warm water hits his back.
“What do you mean ‘what the hell’ you’re the one who's trying to burn my dick off!”
Steve snorted, stepping further into the stream of hot water. “Don’t be dramatic. S’just a little warm.”
“Just a little warm,” Eddie mocked as he stepped further away from the shower head, backing himself into a corner. “Stevie, you’re turning redder and redder by the second. It’s too hot!”
“No such thing as too hot.”
“My dick begs to differ!”
Without waiting for Steve to retort, Eddie reached a hand into the scalding water and turned the faucet 45 degrees in the opposite direction. In a matter of seconds, the water started cooling off. Eddie had never been more grateful for Steve’s fancy ass house and working water heater system than that moment.
This time it was Steve who yelped as the cold water assaulted his body. Thankfully, he didn’t leap like Eddie had and instead sidestepped out from under the faucet leaving enough room for Eddie to dive right under the cool stream.
“Now this is an appropriate water temperature.”
“Are you kidding me?” Steve scoffed. “My dick is shriveling up in this! Look!”
Eddie’s gaze immediately dropped and yeah, okay, that was going to be a problem.
“Damn, you really are a grower.”
“Oh my god,” Steve groaned before yanking Eddie away from the shower head.
Just as Steve was about to turn the faucet in the other direction, Eddie’s hand was on his, holding it steady.
“Eddie! I’m going to freeze if I don’t make it warmer.”
“And I’m going to melt! It’s not that bad, you’ll get used to it.”
“I don’t want to get used to it. You get used to my temperature.”
They stayed like that, hands clutched around the faucet, bickering back and forth for several more moments before coming to an impasse. In the end, neither one won The Great Water Temperature Debate and instead, they sprinted back into Steve’s room to satisfy themselves the old-fashioned way: sprawled out on Steve’s mattress, taking turns tearing each other apart.
It wasn’t until years later when they stayed at a hotel with dual shower heads, that they finally got to cross “shower sex” off their not-safe for Dustin’s eyes bucket list.

Millions of U.S. apples were almost left to rot. Now, they'll go to hungry families
NOVEMBER 27, 2023 By Alan Jinich
Tumblr media
It's getting late in the harvest season in Berkeley County, West Virginia and Carla Kitchen's team is in the process of hand-picking nearly half a million pounds of apples. In a normal year, Kitchen would sell to processors like Andros that make applesauce, concentrate, and other products. But this year they turned her away. ... Across the country, growers were left without a market. Due to an oversupply carried over from last year's harvest, growers were faced with a game-time economic decision: Should they pay the labor to harvest, crossing their fingers for a buyer to come along, or simply leave the apples to rot?
Tumblr media
Bumper crops, export declines and the weather have contributed to the apple crisis
... While many growers in neighboring states like Maryland and Virginia left their apples to drop. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia was able to convince the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to pay for the apples produced by growers in his state, which only makes up 1% of the national market.
A relief program in West Virginia donated its surplus apples to hunger-fighting charities
This apple relief program, covered under Section 32 of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1935, purchased $10 million worth of apples from a dozen West Virginia growers. Those apples were then donated to hunger-fighting charities across the country from South Carolina and Michigan all the way out to The Navajo Nation.
Tumblr media
Mike Meyer, head of advocacy at The Farmlink Project, says it's the largest food rescue they've ever done and they hope it can serve as a model for their future missions. "There's over 100 billion pounds of produce waste in this country every year; we only need seven billion to drive food insecurity to zero," Meyer says. "We're very happy to have this opportunity. We get to support farmers, we get to fight hunger with an apple. It's one of the most nutritional items we can get into the hands of the food insecure."
At Timber Ridge Fruit Farm in Virginia, owners Cordell and Kim Watt watch a truck from The Farmlink Project load up on their apples before driving out to a food pantry in Bethesda, Md. Despite being headquartered in Virginia, Timber Ridge was able to participate in the apple rescue since they own orchards in West Virginia as well. Cordell is a third-generation grower here and he says they've never had to deal with a surplus this large.
Tumblr media
At the So What Else food pantry in Bethesda, Md., apple pallets from Timber Ridge fill the warehouse up to the ceiling. Emanuel Ibanez and other volunteers are picking through the crates, bagging fresh apples into family-sized loads. "I'm just bewildered," Ibanez says. "We have a warehouse full of apples and I can barely walk through it." "People in need got nutritious food out of this program. And that's the most important thing" Executive director Megan Joe says this is the largest shipment of produce they've ever distributed – 10 truckloads over the span of three weeks. The food pantry typically serves 6,000 families, but this shipment has reached a much wider circle. "My coworkers are like, 'Megan, do we really need this many?' And I'm like, yes!" Joe says. "The growing prices in the grocery stores are really tough for a lot of families. And it's honestly gotten worse since COVID."
Tumblr media
"It's the first time we've done this type of program, but we believe it can set the stage for the region," Kent Leonhardt, West Virginia's commissioner of agriculture says. "People in need got nutritious food out of this program. And that's the most important thing." Following West Virginia's rescue program, the USDA announced an additional $100 million purchase to relieve the apple surplus in other states around the country. This is the largest government buy of apples and apple products to date. But with the harvest window coming to an end, many growers have already left their apples to drop and rot.

The cultural erasure that accompanied conquest took the form of forcefully alienating Indigenous people from their traditional diets. Therefore, decolonisation necessarily involves preserving, reclaiming and reviving these diets, which are organically connected to the land. Palestinian feminist scholar Lila Sharif’s work, arguing that Palestinians everywhere sustain their attachment to the homeland through practices linked to the olive tree, is a valuable contribution to the study of decolonial practices. As an estimated 80 per cent of small‑scale farming and family cooking globally is done by women, food sovereignty directly empowers women, just as its loss negatively impacts them. To quote Indigenous activist and economist Winona LaDuke: ‘Native women are here, and we birthed this place. We created the agrobiodiversity of 8,000 varieties of corn, and a multitude of beans, squash and melon varieties that are now touted by big agriculture and the foundation.’ In Palestine, women have historically foraged for the bounty of herbs and leafy greens that are an important part of Palestinian cuisine, and which provided them with the means to secure social and economic independence. They are heavily involved at all stages of agriculture, as growers, harvesters, processors and traders. Today, about a third of women in the West Bank are the only income‑earners in their households. Going out in small groups to the fields at dawn, they expertly gather seasonal herbs, making sure they leave roots and seeds behind, to ensure the next season’s harvest. They are finely attuned to the short‑lived seasons that make for the hyper seasonal culinary calendar – blink and you miss it.

I really liked mercs and how do they fuck and kinks and dick can you do one with defense classes too?
A/N: you got it, Znyiara!
Defense class dick hc, kinks + How they fuck
Cw:none
Demoman
•Dick: To be honest, I think probably a solid 6 inches hard much like some of the other mercs I’ve written about. Give it take a few inches. Uncut. Argue with someone else. Uncircumcised Demoman for the win. No visible veins. If it’s really good while you two are going at it maybe one or two will pop up but nothing major. Man doesn’t shave sorry. He’s too drunk for all of that. He does keep everything else in check though. Nice deep pink tip, super cute.
•How he fucks: Oh GYAT. Sorry for my Brainrot but you will be sore. He has a lot of pent up energy (probably from making bombs and having to be so precise with the ingredients in them) so, when he gets to fucking he is not being all slow and stuff. Maybe in the beginning for the foreplay but that’s just him teasing you until you beg for him to pound you into the bed while you go braindead. After that he will go hours just going at it. Fast, hard, rough, slow, sensual, sweet. Whatever you want, you will get it. But beware he gets needy and sometimes he can’t contain it for much longer and will just mindlessly chase his orgasm.
•Kinks
Outfits: Not lingerie, outfits. Wear a skirt and see how far you get with that. It will be flipped up about as fast as you can say the word “skirt”. Bent over anywhere and fucked until your legs shake. Or even if you wear a nice pair of shorts he would like to grind up against you until he cums all over himself. Filthy man, but one of culture.
Dirty talking: HE YAPS. Like you cannot shut him the fuck up. Either in your ear, biting your neck or kissing you he will pull away so he can go on and on about how good you feel and how much he loves seeing you like this. Talks you through it for sure. “Yeah? Ya’ like that lass? I knew ya’ would. Tell me how much you like feeling me pound into ya’ “
Marking: Leaving hickeys or bites where people can see them so they know you and him went at it for hours is just a huge turn on for him. Will make jokes about them to you. “Where did ya’ get that, Y/n?” While people are around so you get embarrassed and cover it somehow.
Heavy
•Dick: Man.. he’s a huge man. 7 inches hard. He’s a grower not a shower I think so. He is trimmed well, he takes hygiene very seriously and doesn’t play about his own. Vein right on the upperside of his shaft. Sensitive tip. Pink and he is also uncut. In my personal experience, I have never seen anyone like heavy so uh.. this is an estimated guess Fr. His girth will make you feel like you’re splitting in half. Yummy tummy bulge for sure.
•How he fucks: Soft and gentle. He is the absolute KING of foreplay. He can go down on you for hours. His big hands gripping your legs to keep them on his shoulders and keep them from shutting on his poor head. You will be quivering and speaking wet by the time he is finished. Makes you finish from his mouth at least 4 or 5 times before he even starts to use his fingers and stretch you out enough for his cock to fit. When you’re ready he will have you on top so you can go at your own pace and when/if you get him in fully (and even before that) he will go absolutely crazy for that bulge in your lower tummy.
•Kinks
He doesn’t have much kinks bc he is a very vanilla person but
Mutual masturbation: Is one of his bogged and favorites. Mainly because he likes do watch you touch yourself so he knows how you like to be touched. It’s also so cute to watch you if you are the type to get embarrassed. He will hold you close and watched as you bury your face in his chest and do your thing yk.
Does face sitting count? Because he’s in love with it. He will hold you there for HOURS and just lick and suck like his life depends on it.
Engineer
•Dick: He is a smaller guy so.. 4-5 inches. Sorry engie. But, he knows how to use it. That’s the important part. He is circumcised, trimmed nicely every few days and he has a wonderfully pink tip with a vein on the side that comes out when he is hard.
•How he fucks: However you want it, that is how will get it. He can do anything. Any position. Any kink. He knows how to use that 4-5 inches and he knows how to do it well. He also loves to use toys and his fingers on you for foreplay. Making sure you’ve came throughly before he even thinks about penetration. Your pleasure comes first. He is a man who worships the person he’s with for sure.
•Kinks
Dear god where do I even start. Buckle up.
We will start off tame
Edging/teasing: He likes to take his time with things. Especially things he finds pretty. So edging you and watch as you squirm and beg for an orgasm. Of course he will give you one.. eventually. But now for the fun part. Teasing, once you get that one orgasm. You will not stop having them until you physically cannot handle the overstimulation anymore.
Body worship: My god. He loves to kiss you up and down. Making sure you know just how gorgeous and sexy you are and how he can’t get enough of you. He will whisper sweet things about every part of you so you never forget it.
Bondage: He loves to see you tied up and at his mercy. Of course, he won’t hurt you in any way whatsoever but seeing you like this just turns him on like no other. Especially if you are tied in a way where your breasts are on display and your legs are forced over.
Lingerie: He will definitely buy you lingerie so you can wear it under your clothes or something and surprise him. He loves lace, it’s nice to see someone he lives in such a sweet lacy set after such a hard day working and making things in that shop of his
These are just a few because if I did all of them we would be here for hours.

Hey, first at all, english is not my first language so i will try to do my best to write however this might be.
i have think about this while re-reading the series, i don't think it can be important to the plot, but more to the character development of Elain. In ACOMAF we know that red roses triggered Feyre for all what she went through under the Mountain, in ACOSF we know Nesta is triggered by the sound of fire, more especifically logs burning, because it reminds her about her father's death. Both of the Sister healed and looks for ways to overcome this images or sounds triggers , however, we haven't seen this with Elain, of course we don't know too much about her or her p.o.v, but if Sarah J Mass is following a pattern with the healing path for the Archeron sisters, what it could be in Elain's case?
It can be a lot of things, Nesta described a lot of sensations that reminds her of the cauldron or Hybern, however, as Elain keeps all of what troubles her deep inside, i wonder if Maas has put little hints for us to uncover. I think one is easy for us to read and know, Lucien, or more specifically, what Lucien represents for her: The "betrayal", The end of her human life, Grayson (the person who see her) leaving her, the mating bond after the most traumatic event. Because even if fate, The mother or the Cauldron believes (and knows, Elucien girly here) that Lucien is the best male for her, in Elain's eyes, Lucien is the male who didn't help Feyre when she needed it the most or the male who "sold" them to the king of Hybern, even if a part of her heart wants to gives him a chance (The staircase scene in ACOWAR) Something holds her back: resentment.
That's why she is so stoic and cold around him, she hasn't confronts her demons yet, or how Feyre said it in ACOWAR, that void in her heart that she tried to fill with sunlight. Maybe, just maybe, because the mating bond is always present the moment it snaps, Elain just ignores it, keeping it deep inside where it can't see the daylight, the war was a way of ignoring for a while, helping Velaris to recover was other way to leave it there without touching it. Is easier to hate, or in this case, be indifferent with someone rather than confront it.
But, knowing what it can happen on ACOTAR 6 and the little hints in ACOSF, i hope we can explore the depths of Elain: Her fears, her wrath, where are her affections. See as a reader the way she can overcome it like her sisters did while (hopefully) accepting slowly her mate in this new world and her life.
But then, we know Lucien presences triggers her in some way, is alredy established, so, what other images or sound can be that trigger? And i think about hands, and no, not Azriel hands, hear me out.
The grower of things, the female who can make gardens so beautiful that even the spring court cannot beat her, the gentle and tender woman who always found a way to grew a little garden when they were living in the shack on the human lands, is the same who gives Hybern the final blow. A person who loathes violence was forced to use it to protect their love ones. She might be haunted by that feeling, how the dagger feel on her hand, the sensantion of how the blade pierced Hybern's neck. Just maybe in her moments of peace and solitude while gardening, those memories comes back and Elain prefers for her bared hands to feel something else...like thorns digging up her palm like we know in ACOSF Feysand bonus chapter. All to fade away into that void what she thinks is wrong about her.
I don't know, i tried to connect some points after reading ACOTAR for the first time and re-reading the series once again, so, i might be in the wrong here, but i happen to think it and now i can't stop unseen it.
Hope this works for something.
Just a quick clarification on one point, Elain doesn't actually use bare hands to garden. Feyre first tells Lucien that Elain puts on her gloves and kneels in the dirt which drove the servants mad. In the novella we do have Feyre wondering if she wants cuts as proof of her labor however the bonus in SF disproves this once again because a rosebush tore through the gloves Elain was wearing. The whole debate surrounding the gloves is, I think, confusion of Feyre's thoughts with the actual reality of the situation. Elain does wear gloves and she does wear pearls however she avoids wearing the specific items that Lucien gets her because she's avoiding their bond. But I agree with you, she avoids it because she's not ready to face her demons. Facing the truth of everything she's lost, her fiance, her father, her humanity with having stabbed a man, etc., she's in avoidance mode. For valid reasons but Lucien and their bond is a very persistent reminder of all the things she's trying hard not to deal with. She wants everything to be fine, she wants to be happy so she's telling herself she is, pretending she is though we see the cracks in that in the subtle clues (and the bigger ones like her argument with Nesta). She craves sunshine, is always by the sunniest of windows yet lives in the Night Court. She is bothered by cruelty but is surrounded by a group of brutal warriors and a torturer. That's no shade to the IC and I know Elain has love for her sisters but that doesn't mean deep down she's not bothered by it but is trying to convince herself it's ok, that she's fine. People can lie to themselves for quite some time but the truth eventually breaks free and I do think we're going to see that Elain can no longer run from the things she's tried to avoid dealing with in her book.
Thank you for your ask!!!

The Essence of Jalapeno Sauce
Jalapeno sauce is more than just a condiment; it is a culinary experience that combines heat, flavor, and versatility.  At Modern Food Products, we understand the importance of capturing the essence of fresh Jalapeno peppers to create a sauce that excites the palate.  Our Jalapeno sauce is crafted using premium-quality Jalapeno peppers sourced from trusted growers, ensuring optimal flavor and heat levels that elevate any dish.
The Art of Crafting Jalapeno Sauce
Crafting the perfect Jalapeno sauce requires a delicate balance of ingredients and meticulous attention to detail.  Here is a glimpse into the artistry behind our Jalapeno sauce production process:
1.   Ingredient Selection:  We start by hand-selecting the finest Jalapeno peppers, ensuring they are ripe, firm, and bursting with flavor.  Alongside Jalapenos, we carefully choose complementary ingredients such as vinegar, garlic, onions, and spices to enhance the sauce's depth and complexity.
2.   Roasting and Blending:  To unlock the full flavor potential of Jalapeno peppers, we roast them to perfection, imparting a smoky undertone to the sauce.  The roasted Jalapenos are then blended with other ingredients to achieve a smooth and consistent texture, ensuring every bite delivers a burst of fiery flavor.
3.   Cooking and Seasoning:  The blended ingredients are cooked down to intensify the flavors and achieve the desired consistency.  Throughout the cooking process, we meticulously season the sauce with the perfect balance of salt, sugar, and spices, ensuring a harmonious flavor profile that leaves a lasting impression.
4.   Packaging:  Once the Jalapeno sauce reaches its optimal flavor and texture, it is carefully packaged in jars or bottles designed to preserve freshness and extend shelf life.  Our packaging solutions are not only functional but also visually appealing, reflecting the premium quality of our Jalapeno sauce.

How to Use Fresh Flowers in Cake Decorating?
Here is some incredible information: using real flowers as cake style doesn't need proficient level expertise. Truth be told, new sprouts can be way simpler than tinkering with the sugar-based assortment. The fresh flower bulk suppliers provide amazing and beautiful flowers that can be used in cakes and other food products.
Tumblr media
Before you begin managing stems or eating on petal scraps, however, there are a couple of contemplations to remember.
1. Do a Safety Check
This part's quite serious: a few flowers are normally poisonous whenever consumed, and others are hurtful because they've been splashed with pesticides. One way or the other, they truly ought not to be cosied up in your icing. While dealing with exotic cut flower bulk suppliers learn about the safety of the flower that you choose.
Consumable flowers incorporate roses, gardenia, pansies, violets and dandelions, among others. Assuming you love the vibe of a bloom that isn't consumable, you might in any case have the option to utilize it on your cake if you whisk it away before serving.
Undoubtedly, converse with a decent flower vendor — ideally one who routinely manages cake stylistic layout — about your choices, and observe some fundamental well-being rules to get everything rolling.
Tumblr media
2. Keep Them Fresh
You believe should give your best to broaden the existence of your sprouts, particularly if you're buying them a couple of days before they're going on your cake. To handle your flowers after getting them from a real flower wholesaler, strip the stem of all flowers or plants.
Then dunk the whole bloom (stem and all) into a vinegar and water arrangement — this kills all microscopic organisms on the plant so it'll live longer. Trim the stem and dunk the end into Fast Plunge to hydrate the flowers. Then store them in a container with water until they're prepared to utilize.
3. Account for the Conditions
Contemplate when and where this cake will be served, and pick your flowers to coordinate. Regardless of how lovely those lilacs are, for instance, they won't hold up long on a sweltering summer day. Good mums, nonetheless, are not difficult to continue to look new.
Tumblr media
4. Deal with the Stems
You could simply stick the flower stems directly into the cake, yet that won't keep your sprouts or cake the freshest they can be. Wholesale imported flowers offer a variety of flowers that are amazing in looks.
All things being equal, embed them into individual bloom holders, or utilize an item like Clever Edibles Security Seal to cover stems in a food-safe wax.
5. Play with Designs
Online you will get a wide range of designs that you can create. Bring your artist out and design the cake the way you want. Use flowers provided by bulk imported flowers and make fun cake designs.
Tumblr media
Sourcing Flowers
With regards to obtaining your flowers, you have a couple of choices: Going to a flower specialist, visiting a nearby bloom market or requesting on the web. Buy imported flowers from reliable suppliers with better services and quality.
Going out to a neighbourhood flower market is an incredible choice since it makes for a great journey, yet the producers will want to address the circumstances under which the flowers were developed, and numerous little tasks limit or don't utilize pesticides.

Identification:
Aloe vera barbadensis Miller has thick, wide, fleshy upright leaves which are gray-green in colour, and are arranged in a very distinct circular rosette form.
The younger leaves are spotted with white flecks or streaks, just like the non-edible variety, but these markings disappear as the leaves get older. The mature leaves are plain in colour, without any white spots or streaks.
This variety produces yellow flowers, which are different from the non-edible variety that has orange flowers.
Aloe vera variety Chinensis has narrow spotted leaves that are a blue-green in colour, and and are arranged in a flatter and stacked form, rather than a round rosette form kike the edible variety.
Both the young and older leaves are spotted with white streaks or markings, which are retained right through to maturity, and never disappear
This variety produces orange flowers, which are different from the edible variety that has yellow flowers.
Uses:
Aloe vera barbadensis Miller -
May reduce blood sugar levels: In human and animal studies, aloe vera gel helped reduce blood sugar levels by increasing insulin sensitivity
May suppress inflammatory signals: In animal and test-tube studies, aloe vera extract suppressed inflammatory signals such as TNFα, IL-1 and IL-6
Reduce dental plaque: If used as a mouthwash, aloe vera juice may be as effective as a regular mouthwash in reducing dental plaque build-up
May boost memory: In one animal study, consuming aloe vera gel helped enhance learning and memory while also reducing symptoms of depression
Rich in antioxidants: Regularly eating aloe vera gel may raise blood antioxidant levels. Antioxidants help combat the damage caused by free radicals, which are compounds linked to many chronic diseases
Aloe vera variety Chinensis - The thick leaves contain a gel which is commonly used externally to treat skin irritation, minor burns, sunburns, itching due to allergies and insect bites, sores and skin ulcers.
Note:
It’s important to understand that there are different varieties of Aloe vera, and the common variety for burns is not meant to be eaten, it’s just meant to be applied to the skin.
To quote the San Marcos Growers website article on Aloe vera:
“The scientific name assigned to this aloe has been changed several times in the last few years from Aloe vera to Aloe barbadensis and then back to Aloe vera. It seems that this controversy dates back to the two names being published a couple weeks apart back in April of 1768. In “The Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants: Monocotyledons” (Edited by Urs Eggli, Springer-Verlag 2001) L.E. Lewis, the author on the section Aloaceae, lists the plant as Aloe vera (Linné) Burman and notes that Linné (Carl von Linné or Carolus Linnaeus) did not pubish the combinations of Aloe vera as a numbered species and that Gilbert Westacott Reynolds in “The Aloes of tropical Africa and Madagascar” (1966) argued that the name should be A. barbadensis but had overlooked the combination published by N.L. Burman (not later than April 6, 1768), which has priority over Miller’s name [A. Barbadensis]. Lewis cites as reference for this information L.E. Newton’s article “In defence of the name Aloe vera” in the the “Cactus and Succulent Journal of Great Britain” (1979:41-2).”
Currently, according to botanists, all these names refer to the same plant:
Aloe vera
Aloe barbadensis
Aloe vera barbadensis Miller
Aloe vera var. barbadensis
Aloe vera var. chinensis
Magical Properties
Healing, Beauty, Love, Protection, Luck, Water, Ease Pain
⚠️ Warning ⚠️
Eating aloe vera latex, a yellow substance that is found inside the leaf, has potential risks.
In small doses, eating the latex may help treat constipation by promoting contractions. However, in 2002 the US FDA banned the sale of over-the-counter products containing aloe vera latex due to safety concerns.
Long-term consumption of aloe vera latex has been linked to side effects, including stomach cramps, kidney problems, irregular heartbeat and muscle weakness.
In high doses above 1 gram per day, prolonged use may even be fatal.
Pregnant women should avoid eating the latex, as it may stimulate uterine contractions, which could cause a miscarriage.
In addition, people with digestive disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or Crohn’s disease, should avoid consuming aloe vera latex as it may worsen their conditions.
Aside from the latex, consuming aloe vera gel is not advised for people taking diabetes, heart or kidney medications, as it may worsen potential side effects from the drugs.
In Essence:
Aloe vera gel and skin can be eaten. The gel, in particular, may offer several health benefits.
Be sure to wash the gel or skin thoroughly to remove all traces of latex, which has an unpleasant bitter taste and may cause harmful side effects.
Never eat aloe vera skin care products. They do not offer the same benefits as the leaf and are not meant to be ingested.
Care Guide
Growth Height: 2 Ft High
Exposure: Full sun to part shade
Water intake: very drought tolerant
Soil preference: Aloe vera will grow in most soil types, it doesn’t like ‘wet feet’, where the soil stays wet and soggy for long periods, especially during colder weather. Dig in compost before planting to help with drainage in clay and other water-retentive soils.
In locations which are too shady, Aloe vera plants becomes weak and vulnerable to disease, so it’s best to ensure they get sufficient light when grown outdoors.
When growing Aloe vera in a pot or container, it’s important to use a very well draining potting mix such as ‘cactus and succulent mix’, and most gardeners use terracotta pots to grow them in because they drain much better. Water frequently in hot, dry extreme weather as Aloe vera plants growing in pots can get quite burnt and wilted if they are in a harsh, exposed open position and their water supply runs short.
Season: Summer, will tolerate cold, it’s hardy to -2°C (28°F)
Spread: 3 Ft Wide
Spacing: The ideal pot size for an aloe plant is between 5 and 10 percent larger than the size of the plant right now. This will leave no more than 1 or 2 inches of extra room around each side of the plant.
Maintenance: With both Aloe vera varieties, harvest the older outer leaves when required. If you need to create more plants, give the plants time to grow and they’ll multiply prolifically, whether in a pot or in the ground. Gently pull up the offshoots or pups growing around the parent plant and repot them.

1st May >> Fr. Martin's Reflections / Homilies for Today's Mass Readings (Inc. John 15:1-8) for ‘I am the vine, you are the branches’, Reflection on the readings for Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
And for
Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker (Inc. Matthew 13:54-58.
Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
Gospel (Except USA) John 15:1-8 I am the vine, you are the branches.
Jesus said to his disciples:
‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that bears no fruit he cuts away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more. You are pruned already, by means of the word that I have spoken to you. Make your home in me, as I make mine in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, but must remain part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is like a branch that has been thrown away – he withers; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire, and they are burnt. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask what you will and you shall get it. It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit, and then you will be my disciples.’
Gospel (USA) John 15:1-8 Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.
Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”
Reflections (8)
(i) Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
In today’s gospel reading, Jesus speaks frequently about the importance of the disciples bearing fruit. From what Jesus goes on to say, it is clear that the fruit Jesus is referring to is the fruit of love, a life of love that reflects Jesus’ love for his disciples, for all of us, and for humanity. Jesus makes clear in our gospel reading that such a life of love flows from our communion with him, just as fruit on the branches of a vine are due to the branches being in communion with the vine. If the branches are separated from the vine, the fruit will wither. In the same way, Jesus says, ‘cut off from me you can do nothing’. Jesus stresses the importance of a certain way of life, a life of love, but he suggests that even more important is our communion with him and his with us. His primary call is not to bear the fruit of love but to make our home in him, as he makes his home in us. In becoming flesh, Jesus made himself at home with us; he looks to us to make ourselves at home with him. As he has cultivated his communion with us, we are to cultivate our communion with him. It is this intimate relationship with the Lord that empowers our lives to bear the fruit of love. It is only in and through our communion with the Lord that we can come to love one another as he has loved us, and it is such a way of life that gives glory to God the Father.

(ii) Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
This morning’s gospel reading is again taken from John’s account of what Jesus said to his disciples on the night before he died. Jesus is taking his leave of his disciples but, before doing so, he wants to assure them that beyond his death and resurrection he will remain in communion with them. The image of the vine and the branches expresses the depth of his communion with his disciples, with all of us. The Lord wants to be in communion with all of us, but for that to happen we must remain in him by allowing his words to remain in us, by allowing his words to shape our lives. We can slip out of our communion with him; we can cut ourselves off from the Lord. However, his invitation is always there to return to him and to remain with him or in him. It is in returning to him, in remaining in him, in allowing his words to remain in us, that our lives bear rich fruit, what Paul calls the fruit of the Spirit. According to the last verse of our gospel reading, it is lives rich in the fruit of the Spirit that give glory to God. According to Saint Irenaeus, it is the human person fully alive - alive with the fruit of the Spirit - that gives glory to God.

Those who have roses will know that they need to be pruned if you are to get the best out of them. What is true of roses is true of most plants; pruning brings on new life. Jesus refers to that procedure of pruning in today’s gospel reading. He suggests that in various ways God prunes our lives to make them even more fruitful than they presently are. There are some things we may need to shed if we are to become all that God is calling us to be. Some experiences of letting go, which can be very painful at the time, can help us to grow in our relationship with God and with others. Yet, during those painful experiences of pruning in our lives, the Lord is in communion with us. In the words of the gospel reading, he makes his home in us, he remains in us. We don’t have to face into that experience of being pruned on our own, or in the strength of our own resources alone. The Lord who makes his home in us will sustain us in those times, and will lead us through the painful experience of pruning into a new and more fruitful life. However, for that to happen we need to remain in him as he remains in us; we need to keep in communion with him, as he is in communion with us.

(iv) Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
The words of Jesus we have just heard from the gospel of John are spoken in the course of the Last Supper. Jesus has been speaking about his immanent departure, his leaving this world and going to the Father. It is in that context of speaking about his going away from his disciples that Jesus also speaks about his presence to his disciples, the new communion between Jesus and his disciples that his departure will make possible. One image of the new quality of communion between Jesus and his disciples, between Jesus and us, is the image of the vine. Jesus says ‘I am the vine, you are the branches’. Jesus has taken the initiative to create that communion, by his journey to the Father and his sending of the Spirit. We are not asked to create that communion; that has been done for us. Our calling is to preserve the communion the Lord has created or, in the words of the gospel reading, to remain in him. We are to remain in the communion the Lord has created and is always creating. We do that by our prayerful communion with him and by our efforts to love one another as he has loved us, to be in communion with each other as he is in communion with us.

(v) Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
Several times in John’s gospel Jesus makes a solemn statement about himself beginning with the two little words, ‘I am...’ In this morning’s gospel reading ‘I am the vine’. This, however, is the only occasion when having declared ‘I am...’ Jesus immediately goes on to declare to his disciples, ‘you are...’ Having said, ‘I am the vine’, Jesus says to his disciples, ‘you are the branches’. Jesus is the whole vine and we, his disciples, are the branches on that vine. By means of this image Jesus was expressing very graphically the bond that he seeks to create between himself and ourselves. He wants to make his home in us and the wants us to make our home in him. He speaks of a deep communion between himself and ourselves, one that bears rich fruit, the fruit of his loving presence to others. The fruit is secondary to the communion, as Jesus says you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me. The Lord has taken the initiative to bring about this deep communion between him and us; he has laid down his life for us and poured the Spirit into our hearts. We have to reciprocate, by befriending him as he has befriended us, by allowing his words to remain in us, making a home for his words in our hearts.
And/Or
(vi) Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
As part of children’s instruction for the Sacrament of Confirmation, they are told about the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It is Saint Paul in his letter to the Galatians who lists the fruits, or what he terms the ‘fruit’, of the Holy Spirit, ‘love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control’. Paul was articulating there the fundamental attitudes of heart that the Holy Spirit works to form within us. He is saying that if we open ourselves to the gift of the Spirit we have received, our life will show forth this rich fruit. In the gospel reading today, Jesus also speaks about fruit in connection with the image of the vine. At the end of the gospel reading he declares that it is to the glory of God his Father that we should bear much fruit. A little beyond this reading Jesus identifies this fruit with love, the kind of love that Jesus gave expression to in his own life, what Paul also identifies as the fruit of the Spirit. Jesus declares in our reading that if we are to bear this fruit we must remain in him as branches in the vine. Paul identifies the Spirit as the source of this fruit; Jesus identifies himself as its source. It is our union with the Lord through the Spirit that empowers us to live in a way that reflects how the Lord lived, how he loved. We cannot live this way on the basis of our own resources alone. We need to be in union with the Lord and his Spirit.
And/Or
(vii) Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
There is always a temptation to put limits on God, to say, in effect, that God cannot do this or that unless this or that happens. We find such a scenario in today’s first reading. Some Jewish Christians from Jerusalem came down to the church in Antioch and told converts to the faith from paganism, Gentile Christians, ‘Unless you have yourselves circumcised in the tradition of Moses, you cannot be saved’. They were saying in effect, ‘Much as God would like to include you among those who will inherit eternal life, he is powerless unless you have yourselves circumcised’. We don’t have to go back as far as the Acts of the Apostles to find such a mind-set. In living memory, we have allowed ourselves to think that we cannot find favour with God unless we follow certain rules or rituals or long standing customs. However, God cannot be boxed in like that. Today’s gospel reading is taken from the gospel of John and earlier in that gospel Jesus says to Nicodemus, ‘the Spirit blows where it chooses’. Because God is all loving towards us, God is completely free in our regard in a way we can never understand. God’s love towards us has been fully revealed in Jesus. In one of his letters, Paul speaks about ‘the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge’. Because our relationship with the Lord is one of love, there is nothing mechanical about that relationship, whereby if we do one thing, he becomes free to do something else. There is nothing less mechanical than the image of the vine and the branches that Jesus offers us in today’s gospel reading. It is a vibrant, living, dynamic, image. If Jesus is the vine and we are the branches, it is difficult to know where the vine ends and the branches begin. Jesus invites us to make our home in him, as he makes his home in us. He desires an intimate relationship with us, a relationship of love. It is an empowering relationship, just as the vine empowers the branches to bear fruit. As we grow in our relationship, our friendship, with the Lord, something of his love that surpasses knowledge will become visible in our own lives.

(viii) Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter
When I was ordained, it was customary coming up to ordination day to produce a little card to distribute to others, with the date and church of ordination and with a verse of Scripture that was significant for the person being ordained. The verse I chose for my ordination card was from today’s gospel reading, ‘cut off from me you can do nothing’. It sprung from a conviction that if I was to do any good as a priest, I would need to remain in communion with the Lord. My relationship with the Lord would have to be fundamental to all the other relationships I would have as a priest. This passage continues to proclaim this message for all of us today. Jesus is saying that if our lives are to bear fruit, especially the fruit of love, we need to remain in the Lord, as he desires to remain in us. If our relationships with others are to be truly loving relationships, shaped by the Holy Spirit, we need to keep our relationship with the Lord alive and vibrant. Jesus uses the language of making our home in him and remaining in him. It is the language of communion. We are to remain in communion with the Lord through faith, through prayer, just as the branches of a vine are in communion with the vine itself. The Lord has entered into communion with us; he has taken the initiative to be in a loving relationship with us. That is why he says to us, ‘I am the vine, you are the branches’. However, he needs us to respond to that loving initiative he has taken towards us. We are to make our home in him, to remain in him. We are to keep coming to him and turning towards him. Then his life, which is a life of love, will flow through us and find expression in our lives, shaping our relationships. Our lives will be full of the fruit of the Spirit, which is the only fruit that will last beyond this life into eternity.

Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker
Gospel (Except USA) Matthew 13:54-58 A prophet is only despised in his own country.
Coming to his home town, Jesus taught the people in their synagogue in such a way that they were astonished and said, ‘Where did the man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? This is the carpenter’s son, surely? Is not his mother the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Jude? His sisters, too, are they not all here with us? So where did the man get it all?’ And they would not accept him. But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is only despised in his own country and in his own house’, and he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Gospel (USA) Matthew 13:54-58 Is he not the carpenter’s son?
Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.
Reflection (1)
(i) Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker
In this morning’s first reading people ask, ‘Is this not the carpenter’s son?’ The term translated carpenter might better be translated craftsman or artisan. It suggests someone who worked with wood but also with other materials, such as stone. The gospels indicatethat Joseph was a skilled labourer. In that village culture, a skill could be a small source of income. Jesus’ family were not wealthy but probably not destitute either. Joseph had a marketable skill. Just below Nazareth, about five kilometres away, while Jesus was a child, a new city was being built by Herod Antipas called Sephoris. The ruins of the city are still to be seen today. It is interesting to speculate that Joseph might have found work as that city was being built. Today we remember Joseph the worker. His small income allowed him to support his family, from day to day. The importance of Joseph’s role in providing the relatively secure environment in which Jesus could grow to maturity as a human being is probably underestimated. He certainly helped to create, with Mary, the religious environment in the home which allowed Jesus to grow in his relationship with God. Joseph’s faithfulness to his task created the space for Jesus to be faithful to his calling. Joseph reminds us that our own personal response to our own calling from God will always have huge consequences for others.

International Tea Day
While everyone loves a cup of tea, many of the workers and producers of that tea face poor conditions and pay. Help raise awareness and keep tea fair.
The tea industry provides millions of people around the world with cups of tea in the morning. One of the biggest producers of tea, India, recognizes the importance of tea in its communities and as a commodity for commerce.
However, much of the working conditions for those within the tea industry still need much improvement. If you think this holiday was about drinking tea, well think again! International Tea Day is all about the tea workers and bringing civil rights into action. Let’s see how this holiday came to pass.
Do you love a good cup of tea? While International Tea Day can certainly involve paying homage to tea, we should pay homage to those working in the tea industry. The best way to do this is by helping to raise awareness regarding their working conditions so they can be improved.
History of International Tea Day
The International Tea Day campaign was launched in 2005 by the trade unions, small tea growers and civil society organizations in Asia and Africa to address the issues of living wages for workers and fair prices for small tea producers.
The International Tea Conference in New Delhi came out with an International Declaration on the rights of workers and small growers to help regulate uneven competition, land ownership, safety regulations, rights of women, social security and living wages. Another organization, The Tea Board of India, proposed International Tea Day in hopes of it becoming an official holiday to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
This was proposed by chairman Santosh Kumar Sarangi in 2015. According to the chairman, the proposal of India was supported by countries such as Canada, the United States, European Union, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Kenya, and Malawi. While the holiday doesn’t have official status, the goal of this holiday is to recognize the vulnerable situations that tea producers in India have with current living conditions and worker-related policies.
The day also focuses on deliberating on urgent issues such as residues, climate change, technology and trends on production and consumption in the tea industry. To observe this day, over 150 representatives from tea organizations gather and conduct a seminar to discuss the pervading problems the tea industry has as well as problems faced within their own country.
International Tea Day Timeline
2737 BC Tea is discovered as a beverage
Legend has it that Chinese Emperor Shen Nung is sitting beneath a tea tree while a servant boiled water for drinking. Some leaves fall into the cup and begin  the practice of drinking what is now called “tea”.
1610 Tea comes to Europe
It is believed that the Dutch were the first to bring tea to Europe, just a few years prior to the introduction of coffee by Venetians.
1773 The Boston Tea Party occurs
With the intention of revolting against the high taxes levied by the British government without providing any voice, residents of Massachusetts throw tea into the Boston Harbor. “No taxation without representation” is the major complaint.
2004 International Tea Day is created
At the World Social Forum, International Tea Day is conceived and then celebrated the following years in New Delhi and Sri Lanka, then later in other tea-producing places like Nepal, Viet Nam, Bangladesh and others.
2019 United Nations adopts International Tea Day
After some years of advocating for its observance, International Tea Day is adopted by the United Nations General Assembly at the suggestion of the FAO Intergovernmental Group on Tea.
How to Celebrate International Tea Day
If you’re a lover of tea, then do some research about some of your favorite companies. Try looking up tea brands that support fair trade, and possibly switch to those brands to make a difference in the way you buy products such as tea. Use the hashtag #internationalteaday to help recognize it as an official holiday and educate others about the tea industry if you’re interested.
You could also use International Tea Day to try a variety of tea you have never had before. Matcha, for example, is highly popular as of late. You need to shop with care, though! The first thing you need to take a look at is how the Matcha has been produced and sourced.
You need to ensure that all veins and stalks have been removed so that there is not any bitterness and only the finest leaves should be used. Secondly, the color of the matcha powder is a significant factor. The greener the color is, the better. This is because the leaves are forced to overproduce chlorophyll because Matcha is shade-grown, which causes the vibrant green shade.
If the Matcha is yellow or brown in color, this is a sign that the leaves have not been properly shaded or that branches and stalks have been included. The price is the third factor to consider. Like most things, if you want quality, you can expect to pay a little bit more.
If something seems too good to be true, the chances are that it is. The feel of Matcha is also important. It should be a fine powder that is very silky. Last but not least, the taste is obviously a crucial attribute when it comes to quality. It should have a clean and naturally sweet taste.
Why not make some delicious baked green tea treats on International Tea Day and have a bake sale to raise money and awareness regarding working conditions in the tea industry? Green tea recipes are available in their abundance. People are actively searching for different ways to enjoy green tea. While green tea is delicious when simply mixed with hot water, there is nothing wrong with switching it up from time to time, especially on International Tea Day!
An easy and delicious recipe is Matcha Meringue Kisses. To make this you will need Matcha, sugar, egg whites, and powdered sugar. Begin by sifting together the Matcha and the powder sugar, and then whip the egg whites until they have soft peaks. Gradually add the sugar and whip until stiff peaks. Gently fold the Matcha into this mixture and then transfer to a pastry bag. Pipe the mixture into small kisses onto a baking tray and then bake for around an hour.
Or, why not make Green Tea Donuts? For this, you need green tea, honey, melted butter, milk, egg, salt, baking powder, sugar, and cake flour. You whisk the green tea, salt, baking powder, sugar, and flour. Add the honey, melted butter, milk, and egg, and then whisk. Use a pastry bag to pipe the batter into the mould. Then, simply bake the donuts for eight minutes. You can make your own glaze to go on the top – chocolate goes well!
Other delicious baked treats to try include green tea muffins, brownies and shortbread!

If Ugandans have a social safety net, it is woven from banana fibers, and if there is a clear path to socialism, it will be lined with banana leaves. The lusuku model, premised on intercropping and smallholder farming, could be the basis for national agrarian reform that improves the lives of Uganda’s agricultural workers without accelerating the destruction of the natural environment. Uganda faces increasing difficulty feeding itself because of climate extremes and land degradation, and this affects farmers more significantly than anyone else. Moreover, since the 1990s, the ruling National Resistance Movement regime sold off and dismantled most of the coffee, tea, and cotton growers cooperatives, leaving smallholder farmers in the hands of the predatory middlemen which cooperatives had been established to protect them against. Unable to collectively bargain and exposed to dramatic fluctuations in the market prices for cash crops, many people left rural areas to search for employment in cities. This has been a driving force behind the massive inequality between rural and urban workers. Ugandans now produce more food than they consume, even exporting to other countries in the region, yet 41% of people are undernourished, and agricultural production has decreased over the last 20 years. For the most part, the strategy pursued by Uganda’s government has been to encourage the development of ecologically disastrous intensive agriculture for export, privileging foreign investors rather than developing the infrastructure that would benefit peasants. Indeed, while more than 70% of Ugandans are employed in agriculture, the sector only receives around 4% of public investment, and projects aimed at helping smallholder farmers have had very little success, even by their own standards. Many of the government’s investments in agriculture very clearly advantage larger landowners, to the detriment of the poorest farmers. For example, most of the government’s investment in labor-saving technologies has been spent on tractors, which are great for large plots but largely unaffordable or unsuitable for the average farmer, whose plot is usually between 1-3 acres large. However, a socialist transition premised on agroecological reforms could make use of the existing lusuku model to create the kind of growth that actually improves poor farmers’ lives without destroying their environment. This could begin with reestablishing cooperatives and engineering agricultural prices around social needs and goals, like guaranteeing access to food. Research from around the world has shown that while large, monocrop plantations are good at producing huge volumes of one crop, smallholder farms are more productive when evaluated on a per-unit area and are capable of securing national food sovereignty. Why, for example, should Ugandans buy rice imported from Pakistan or Vietnam when banana intercropping yields more calories per hectare than rice? Lusukus could feed the nation without relying on foreign experts, development aid, or the capital-intensive inputs now being imported to grow for export. Because lusukus are far better for the soil, they also improve the nation’s capacity to resist severe floods and drought, effects of climate change that hit poor farmers hardest. In these ways, the lusuku model could provide a sustainable path to socialist development.

The Animal Crossing New Leaf Welcome amiibo Horror Dream Masterpost
Hello! I’ve seen the masterpost of ACNL dream towns several times before, and I was inspired to make this post to spread around some lesser-known dream towns. Besides, that post by fuckyeahassortedstuff is outdated with the Welcome amiibo update, so yeah. Like his post, I will provide a small description, the language, and the Dream code.
I have visited these towns, but I didn’t record them here. They were on my Amino, but since the awful update, I left, so they’re no longer there anymore.
Also, all of the classic older horror towns have changed since their OG incarnations, so if you haven’t visited in a while, I highly encourage you to.
Anyways, let’s go!
Aika Village- It’s the classic. Investigate what happened to a girl on her birthday. Japanese. 2D00- 002A- 49A0
Hitokui- This is yet another classic. Dig deeper into the mystery of a church, a cafe, and a shrine if you’ve got the guts. Japanese. 1C00-0077-A492
Cuteland- Welcome to our boarding school! Mother would love to have you here. We hope you enjoy it here! This is one of my favorite horror dream towns, and I’ve been to a lot of them. English. 5C00-0029-541E
Faleisha- Investigate the strange circumstances surrounding a young man’s death. English. 5B00-0026-1300
Fogwood- What happens when a town accepts demons and riches? Nothing good, that’s what. This is probably the most well-known new Dream town. English. 6E00-0015-B4EC
Unknown- This isn’t specifically a horror town, but it is based on Over the Garden Wall, which is a CN show that has the perfect Halloween vibes. English. 5B00-00E6-E746
AHS- This town is an American Horror Story based town, so if you enjoy AHS, you’ll like this one. English. 5D00-003E-4CF3
Hell-  Explore a rainy town that has a cutesy facade. What’s underneath? Who knows...English. 7A00-0094-3FFC
Home- There’s demons and experiments. English. 4F00-007C-7A21
Fade- This is a story of fame, and the painful journey of getting there. English. 7B00-0047-9C5E
Mosswick-  A plant store owner, a plant and fungi grower, and a librarian live in the same town. Also, there’s mushrooms everywhere, so that’s probably important. English. 4A00-002B-04CA
The Void- Dare to gaze into the void... English. 5B00-0095-BD63
Verity- A school houses a dark secret. Why are there so many messages to leave? What happened here? English. 5F00-00A6-0957
Hula Key- Welcome to a town where Death owns the pet shop. English. 4D00-0013-948C
Marshall- Visit a town full of Marshall-y goodness. This is similar to Donut/Marshall in that it’s about someone with an obsession with Marshall, but it goes a different way. English. 4C00-0086-C8D8
Aokihara-This place was brainwashed with sports. English. 4E00-0032-EBA1

It is often grown for its edible pods, leaves, and flowers. Here are some key points about the hyacinth bean vegetable plant: 1. Edible Parts: The hyacinth bean plant produces various edible parts, including young pods, leaves, and flowers. The pods are the primary edible part, and they are harvested while they are still tender. 2. Plant Appearance: The hyacinth bean plant is a twining vine with lush green foliage. It produces attractive purple flowers and long, slender pods. 3. Culinary Uses: The young pods of the hyacinth bean are often used in cooking. They have a slightly sweet and nutty flavor and can be used in various dishes, such as stir-fries, curries, and salads. The leaves and flowers are also used in some culinary traditions. 4. Nutritional Value: Hyacinth beans are a good source of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins (such as vitamin C), and minerals (including iron and potassium). 5. This sort of falls under Day 2's Magic Prompt since it's a theory on possible powers for Elain. Contains TOG spoilers.
I was having a conversation with @acourtdelaluna a few weeks back and we were discussing how SJM was very confident in her response to a specific interview question, that there would definitely be more ACOTAR babies.
Something about that didn't make sense to us though. Was she referring to a possible Epilogue she's going to write for all the characters? Or did she mean we're going to see it in an actual book like we did with Feyre? The entire spin-off is building towards this huge battle so how can there be another pregnancy for any of the main characters? It doesn't seem logical to have a pregnant female running around in battle.
But I realized today, Elain is the PERFECT character to end up pregnant in the series.
Rhysand is a warrior
Nesta is a warrior
Feyre is a warrior
Mor is a warrior
Gwyn is a warrior
Az is a warrior
Cassian is a warrior
Emerie is a warrior
Lucien is a warrior
The only main character who has actively turned away from everything to do with fighting in battle is Elain. She did not want a weapon and only accepted one when Feyre reassured her she wouldn't need to use it. And while she did use it to save her sister, she returned it "and didn't look back". She is the only character who was written to completely shun the Illyrian fighting leathers. In Silver Flames, SJM made it a point to remind us that "cruelty bothers her". I could be wrong but I don't think there are any clues that Elain's future is going to be that of a warrior in battle so where does that leave her? When everyone else is fighting in the war, what role will Elain play?
In the TOG series, Yrene was a healer. A healer who understood what plants could be used to create salves to aid in healing:
"Elide finished the tin of salve from her pocket, Eucalyptus, Yrene had said, naming a plan Elide had never heard of, but whose smell - sharp and yet soothing - she very much enjoyed. Beneath the pungent herb lay lavender, rosemary, and something else mixed in with the opaque, pale liniment."
I know it's not a theory many agree with but.... there is the possibility that Elain had something to do with healing Cassian after the Kings attack. We don't yet have proof of this though there are lines that could support it.
Aside from small clues that are maybe hinting at Elain's future, one of the biggest things we know as fact is her love of gardening and gardens aren't just about flowers.
Elain has a gentle nature, war and cruelty bother her, she is a grower of things (plants are needed for salves), and she rushed to Cassian when he was injured while Nesta chose to leave Cassian's side in order to decapitate the King.
I can't think of any character who is more suited to end up a healer than Elain.
Not only was Yrene was a healer (who played an important role in the defeat of the Valg), but in the final book with the final battle, she was pregnant.
Elain also ending up pregnant makes such perfect sense to me because it creates a valid reason for her to not have to fight with weapons while the others do. And if she does turn out to be a healer, that would be her contribution to the war itself.
Side note: In my mind Lucien has a breeding kink, full stop. The male who has such control in every single aspect of his life, not seeking revenge against his father and brothers, restraining himself when there are times he had every right to go off on Nesta, Feyre, Rhys, Tamlin, is going to go absolutely feral when he and Elain finally accept their bond and he's not going to give a damn about contraceptive teas.
