really ultimately, as great as a film monkey man was, there is a certain....irreverance or detachment i have with ramayana as a story and mythology, i know it well enough to have appreciated the imagery and motifs in the film and how its woven in but from a political perspective, im like eh, not the most interesting take on the ramayaana i have seen in film

I think something else going on in film rn is ppl trying to reconcile w like where the world Is atm. Tim Burton getting Danny Devito to say “damn foreigners” (about some guy being new to the underworld, but I’m talking abt in the context of Tim Burton) and then the Soul Train Scene (BAD) while casting Jenna Ortega and having the background cast be diverse - he’s like, idk what he’s trying to say actually. “Look, I can both be Racist and Good at the same time!”
It’s like ppl simultaneously going “see, I can have diversity in my stories that better reflect how the world is while still being racist. It’s okay!” and it’s… not rlly working. It feels like remnants of a time gone by being brought into the present as like Nostalgia (for people…. Ok w racism?)
It’s almost like he’s trying to go “I can be like this and still make movies” it’s just like yeah dude. I guess u can.
Beetlejuice beetlejuice was mid but I didn’t like the original very much either.
