Lobelia inflata aka Indian tobacco or puke weed. Bitty little flowers, surprisingly large seed pods (almost as if they'd been....inflated)

As landback efforts here become more successful I can't help but wonder how long it will take for indigenous reclamation to be described as the predations of settler colonists

It's Nice to Have a Friend
Tumblr media
Summary: How you and Wade became best friends.
Pairing: Wade Wilson x slightly Depressed!Reader
Word count: 1.5k
Masterlist
Tumblr media
It smells like sweat, tobacco and cheap alcohol inside the bar. You immediately regret leaving your cozy apartment, wearing those faux leather pants, a black crop top that makes you feel like you're gonna explode out of it and putting makeup on just to end up in a smelly place that has a bathroom that'll probably give you an UTI if you use it.
But it's your best friend's pleading eyes that soften you up, and you know you have been unavailable lately. Always cancelling on her last minute and isolating in your place after your work hours, wallowing in your misery and wondering if that's all life's gonna be now that you're an adult: paying bills and working in a vicious cycle.
"You're not depressed, you're suffering from late capitalism," Maya begins, as she moves flawlessly on her high heels, her tiny little dress fitting perfectly on her. "You just need a drink or ten to forget for a little while."
"Becoming an alcoholic sounds like a nice solution." You roll your eyes, dodging a broken bottle in your sneakers, kicking another aside as you move between all that trash. Maya was such a princess, why she was in love with someone who worked in such a nasty place was very confusing to you.
"You're so funny." Maya said, kissing your cheek, her manicured thumb grazing on the spot her lipstick left a stain, smudging it a little. "He's very important to me, Y/N. And your approval means a lot."
Your heart made that little flip it always does whenever she says something like this. Maybe it's the guilt gnawing at your mind.
"If he makes you happy, you don't really need my approval, Maya." You mumble, following her inside.
The interior is even worse than outside. The bar is full: of big, chunky men. Some are playing pool, others playing poker, others are drinking alone, sulking.
You keep your face straight, wondering which one of those are Maya's new boyfriend. You sigh in relief when she runs to the one who's sweeping the floor, an Indian skinny guy who - thanks to the gods above - doesn't look old enough to be her father this time.
She lets out a girlish squeal as she hugs him, giving him a tight hug. You approach them, alleviated that he seems normal.
"Y/N, this is Dopinder. Dopinder, this is my bestest of the best friends in the whole world." Maya grins, and you force a smile to Dopinder.
"Hello, Miss Y/N, I'm a mercenary apprentice." The young man shakes your hand and your eyes widen in disbelief.
Of fucking course. Jesus Christ, Maya.
"Now, now, my little brown friend. What did I say about introducing yourself like this? Tsk." A voice coming right behind makes you stiff.
You turn to face whoever is invading your personal space, a mean scowl on your face, when your eyes widen just a little bit. The guy behind you stands at least 6'2". It's not his impressive height that has your attention, though.
It's his skin. Scarred all over, as if he had some rare skin disease. You wondered if it was an accident, and how he was before it happened. His grin spreads a little.
"Disgusted, doll face?" He tilts his head to the side, as if challenging you to admit it.
The bitter undertone in his voice doesn't escape you. You are mortified by your own reaction. Maya senses your unease and jumps in:
"Wade, excuse my friend, she never leaves home."
Your cheeks and neck turn pink. Wade thinks it's the cutest thing in the world.
Before you can bite Maya's head off, she hops away with Dopinder, leaving you alone with this guy you don't know. You bite the inside of your cheek, contemplating going back home, but it'll be just another thing for Maya to whine about later.
"Seems like you've been ditched." He smirks, sensing the way you're shying away.
"So it seems." You say bitterly.
"Can I entertain you with my company?" He raises his hairless eyebrow.
You're tempted to just dismiss this guy, but you're already out of the safety of your home. Might as well get drunk now.
Tumblr media
Wade talks at an impressive speed and you almost can't catch up to him. He cracks so many jokes that by the end of your second beer, your face is flushed with laughter.
"So... You don't look like someone who usually goes out to have fun, doll face." He pries.
"No, I don't." You say quietly, a sigh escaping your lips.
"Why, then? Why put the effort in dolling yourself up when we both know you'd rather be watching Gilmore Girls in the comfort of your home?"
"I haven't been a good friend lately." You admit, almost meekly, biting the inside of your cheek - another nasty habit that came with the anxiety.
"What's eating you up alive, doll face?"
His question almost makes you choke. How could you tell him that what has been eating you alive is yourself? Your own thoughts? Your low self esteem and your self depreciation? How do you tell him you don't know what the fuck happened between your high school years and college, why your mind is playing tricks on you?
"Please." Your eyes are blinking with unshed tears.
His gaze softens, and he leans in closer, the soft fabric of his hoodie brushing against your forearm.
"Maya is a sweetheart, but we both know she's not that good of a friend. Not if the only way she can gets you to leave your house is by guilt tripping you into it." He speaks in a hushed tone. "Specially if she drops you the moment she sees her boyfriend."
You look up, your gaze finding his.
"You have such gentle eyes." You blurt out.
He wheezes. Wheezes.
"Wow, let's cut your alcohol, okay? Goddamnit, doll face, I'm the ugliest thing to ever exist since Wes Craven created Freddy Krueger." He mumbles the last part, grabbing a water bottle and twisting the cap for you. "Here. Drink it up. Yes, girl!"
Tumblr media
"Are you sure this won't upset my stomach?" You raise your eyebrow, eating your second chimichanga.
Wade rolls his eyes, chewing on his.
You two are sitting on the curb, eating deep fried burritos and drinking soda. Not how you pictured how your night would turn out to be, but much better than what you expected.
"Listen, doll face, did I ever let you down?"
"I literally met you two hours ago."
"Exactly."
"So... Why entertain me?" You can't help but ask.
Wade pauses. He thought you were the cutest thing in the world when he saw you, all wide eyed and brooding, a little scowl on your gorgeous face.
"You seemed like you needed saving." He decides on telling a half-truth instead.
"Is this your thing? Saving damsels in distress?"
He contemplates it. There was nothing heroic about how he acted, or his job, or his personality, for all that mattered. Did he have an ulterior motive to invite you to drink with him? Maybe. But who didn't have ulterior motives?
"No, doll face. Being a hero is not how I operate."
"Are you a mercenary, too?"
His grin widens. Of course.
"It's a long story, doll face. Maybe I'll tell you someday."
"Hmm, is there gonna be a next time, then?"
"It depends. Do you wanna hang out with my ugly ass mug in the foreseeable future?"
This time, you roll your eyes.
Tumblr media
Wade Wilson got under your skin in a way that no one else did.
It started with the way he cracked jokes at everything.
Then, his unexpected late night visits, where he brought some take out and you'd both eat it together sitting by your balcony.
Then, he came to you wounded, with more tears and bullet holes you were comfortable with – now that you knew about his healing factor and what triggered it, you thought you'd get used to seeing his guts by now.
Spoiler alert: you didn't.
It wasn't until you cried and sobbed on his chest, wondering if you were a failure, externalizing all your insecurities and doubts and fears, that you realized you actually made a friend.
Wade trotting in your place with his ridiculous crocs, a popcorn bowl and a beer on his hand should've give it away.
"I love you." You blurted out, so unexpectedly that he snapped his head to you, a shocked look on his face.
"You... What?"
"You're like my best friend now. And I love you. Deal with it." You repeat, this time more confidently, crossing your arms over your chest, as if daring him to state otherwise.
"Wow, you're in love with me!" Wade squeals like a school girl.
"Wade, that's not-"
"I mean, why wouldn't you? When I'm all that." He points to himself with a chuckle. "So, when did it happen? Did you get lost in my gentle eyes?" He blinks in an affected way.
You sighed. "I take it back. I hate you."
"Suuuure."
"Just press play on the fucking movie." You mumble, plopping next to him on the couch.

As someone who is very much into (indie and niche) fragrance and Pirates of the Caribbean, here are my scent picks for some characters absolutely nobody asked for:
Elizabeth Swann: Juliette Has A Gun - Vanilla Vibes (Sea salt, natural vanilla absolute, orchid absolute, absolute brown musk, bezoin absolute, sandalwood, tonka bean)
This is basically just a salty vanilla perfume and I’m all here for it; it’s beachy, light and totally pre-Pirate King Elizabeth.
For more of an indie choice, I’d pick Death & Floral’s “I could never stay long enough on the shore” (sand, salty air, smoke, cold coastline). It’s been a while since I’ve smelled this one but it feels fitting. But tbh, any white floral scent would also fit CotBP Elizabeth - so maybe something like Cloon Keen’s Lá Bealtaine.
Pirate King Elizabeth would absolutely rock something challenging like Beaufort’s Terror & Magnificence (birch tar, black pepper, saffron, incense, tobacco, papyrus, haitian vetiver, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin and pebbles).
Will Turner: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab - Asleep in the Deep (black plum, sea salt, opium tar accord, labdanum, and indigo benzoin)
Basically the dark and heavy counterpart to Elizabeth’s Vanilla Vibes, truly smells like you’re on the Dutchman in between realms.
Jack Sparrow: For Jack, I feel like anything remotely boozy with rum notes works, but if I had to name one scent, I’d pick Stranger Perfumery’s Cigar Rum (raisin, dried fruits (prune and cherry), rum absolute, mandarin, amber, tobacco, oakwood, vetiver, resins, labdanum absolute, seaweed absolute). Maybe layer that with a dirt single note or Fantôme - Bune (damp subterranean air, nagarmotha, smooth cave walls, davana, a cold marble altar, & glittering green dragon scales) for authenticity lol.
Hector Barbossa: Solstice Scents - Headmaster (Apple, bourbon, oak, cedar, pipe tobacco, applewood, amber, spices)
I just felt like I needed to pick a spicy, woody scent with apple notes in it. But any dark aquatic works too.
James Norrington: I associate James with any light aquatic or clean scents (at least when he’s not in his Scruffington Era), so I’d choose something like Solstice Scent’s Gulf Breeze (Saltwater, sand, seashells, sea oats, rain, ambergris (vegan accord).
Cutler Beckett: Histoires de Parfums - 1740 (bergamot, mugwort, patchouli, coriander, cardamom, cedar, birch, labdanum, leather, vanilla, elemi, helichrysum)
Idk, this is just giving off Cutler Beckett energy. It’s boozy, it’s rich, it’s dramatic.
And somehow The House on Widow’s Hill (brandy, old oak paneling, dusty thick carpets, a thread of incense & a roaring fire in the hearth) by Pulp Fragrance also fits. That one’s basically brandy, smoke and dusty carpets in a bottle. On second thought, that might also work for Papa Swann.
I also feel like a tea scent would suit Beckett, but only if it’s a bit heavier, so maybe something like Gris Charnel by bdk (fig, black tea, cardamom essence, iris absolute, bourbon vetiver, indian sandalwood, tonka bean absolute). …But I haven’t smelled that one in a while too.
Davy Jones: Zoologist - Squid (Pink Pepper, Solar Salicylate, Incense, Black Ink Accord, Salty Accord, Opoponax, Ambergris, Benzoin, Musk)
Pretty self-explanatory. On my skin, it’s very musk-forward though.
Ian Mercer: Beaufort - Tonnerre (smoke, gunpowder, blood, brandy, sea spray and citrus)
…Yeah, I guess that one’s also pretty self-explanatory.
Yup, that’s it. Make of that what you will.

our favorite golden retriever boy's bday is soon AND powwow season is just around the corner so here's some indigenous headcanons I've got for alfred f. jones!
he is actively attempting to learn every single native language within his region, but fluently speaks osage, dine bizaad, hopi, mvskoke, and algonquian massachusett and ojibwa
he is the embodiment of sunshine. he can make everyone laugh, and that includes babies. that being said, he has been the reason for at least 100+ babies' first laughs and has proudly thrown parties for each of their families as per the navajo tradition
him (and matt) fully volunteer to drum and sing at powwows, especially at small town ones. they will roadtrip across canada and the us during the summer and absolutely bring the party to the 49. they also do it to overindulge in piccadilly and indian tacos
he is not a religious person but he does acquiesce in spiritual traditions he has picked up from native elders. the major one he uses is smudging. alike the kid from 'sixth sense', he sees dead people-- or ghosts to be exact lol. and he hates them! which is why he will often smudge and pray early in the morning, once a week, to cleanse any spirits from his house
smokes are always in his possession. while he does smoke on occasion, he mostly carries them with him for exchanges. for example, if he encounters a cool mineral on the roadside, instead of just taking it, he will leave tobacco behind as a show of appreciation
he feeds the rez dogs exponentially (even when everyone at every rez keeps telling him not to fuckin do that, you shitass)
put him on your rob list because he owns so many beaded jewelry and turquoise, it may just pay off your student loans and then some
his mutton sandwiches and navajo burgers will make you fall in love with him, no joke

Writing Reference: 5 Symbols
for your next poem/story (pt. 2)
BA
Tumblr media
For the Ancient Egyptians, the Ba was the symbolic representation of the soul.
It takes the form of a small bird with the head of a human being.
Could fly between its owner and the Gods for as long as the body was intact.
The Ba is twinned with the Ka.
If the Ba represented the soul, then the Ka was the “life-force,” the spark of life that animated the body and whose departure resulted in death.
The Ka was sustained with offerings of food and drink, although it was the “ka” or spirit of the food and drink that was consumed.
In the Afterlife, the Ba and the Ka would be reunited to form one single entity.
BECKONING CAT
Tumblr media
A friendly little statuette with a warm welcome found all over Japan and China.
What the cat is doing with his paws carries a secret message.
The cute little Maneki Neko or beckoning cat is ubiquitous in Japan and China where he appears in both homes and offices.
Can be seen in Oriental restaurants all over the world and is for many people the ultimate symbol of prosperity and good luck.
Comes in different colors, each of which signifies a different meaning:
For example, a red cat will protect from illness, and
a black one will ward off evil.
The position of the paws also carries a message:
With the right paw raised the cat will bring money and happiness to home and workplace.
A cat raising its left paw will attract new customers for a business.
And a cat with both paws raised hits the jackpot; both home and business will be happy and profitable, attracting good luck, friends, prosperity, and new clients.
This cat is also the symbol of the small Buddhist temple in Tokyo, where the original incident that shot the cat to fame is said to have happened:
Originally the temple was a lowly place, whose impoverished priest would regularly share what little food he had with his pet cat.
One day some Samurai were passing and noticed this cat, who had one paw raised as though to say hello. The warriors stopped, intrigued by the beckoning cat, and went into the temple just as a horrendous rain storm started.
They believed that paying attention to the cat’s invitation had prevented them being struck by lightning. Thereafter, the fortunes of the priest, the temple, and of course the cat, started to change for the better.
BULLA
Tumblr media
This is a special charm or amulet that was given to Roman children when they were born.
A sealed locket, the bulla (“bubble” or “knob”) contained magical spells specific to the child in question, such as symbols of protection, or wishes for wealth.
Was constructed of different materials depending on the wealth of the family:
leather for the poorest families and gold or
other precious metals for the wealthiest.
Roman boys put aside their bullae when they reached puberty, and the object was offered to the Gods. Girls wore theirs until the eve of their wedding.
In either case it was considered that the bulla belonged to the child, as part and parcel of their personality.
It is the origin of the name of the Papal Bull, the special edict that hails from the Vatican, which is fastened with an oval seal of the same shape as the bulla.
CALUMET
Tumblr media
For the Plains Indians, the pipe, also called the calumet, is one of the most important and recognizable symbols.
Although it is sometimes referred to as the Peace Pipe, shared ceremonially as part of a unifying ritual, the pipe was just as valid a symbol during times of war.
The tobacco used in the pipe is also a powerful magical substance originally intended for ritual use only.
The smoke rising from the pipe signifies a prayer traveling toward the Gods and symbolizes the sacred breath, source of all life.
The fire that lights the pipe symbolizes the Sun and the male element.
The pipe itself is equivalent to the prayer that is offered up from it.
Considered so important that in Native American tradition it is described as though it were a person, and each of its components has the name of a body part.
In addition, the bowl is described as an altar, and the stem, the passage of the breath extending from the human body.
CANDLE
Tumblr media
Symbolizes light in the darkness in a way that a light bulb simply cannot do.
It represents the element of fire as a benevolent force.
Made even more powerful if the candle is made of wax, a substance made by a magical creature, the bee.
The colors of candles are significant in magical practices:
For example, pink is said to attract love.
Black candles are used in dark magic.

November 7th marks the 182nd anniversary of The Creole Ship Slave Revolt ✊🏾
Tumblr media
The Creole was a slave ship owned by the Johnson-Eperson Co. that set sail in November 1841 carrying 135 enslaved Afrikans & shipments of tobacco from Richmond, VA to New Orleans, LA. Among them was a brotha given the name, Madison Washington - a runaway slave from Canada who was captured in VA while searching for his wife - and his wife, given the name, Susan.
On Nov 7th, Washington along with 18 other males made their move to overthrow the ship. They overpowered the crew, killing one of the slavers in the process. The ship’s wounded captain, family, & crew survived the battle. The battle was a success though not without its cost; one of the rebels was mortally wounded and succumbed to his injury. Desperate to save his own neck, the overseer on board swore he'd navigate the ship for them.
First, the rebels demanded they set sail for Liberia, Afrika; but the long distance and low food/water supplies ixneyed that possibility. One of the rebels, a brotha given the name, Ben Blacksmen, asserted that they should aim for the British controlled islands in the West Indies; word had spread of previous rebels gaining their freedom there after overtaking American slave ships. He hoped the same fortune would befall them.
Tumblr media
They arrived in Nassau, Bahamas 2 days later. There, they were met by the harbor pilot and his men - a crew of all local Black Bahamians. The harbor pilot declared them free once ashore. Upon discovering that the Creole's captain was also mortally wounded, the American consul was notified of the revolt and demanded the arrest of Washington & all 18 rebels implicated in his death under charges of Mutany. His wife, Susan, and the other Afrikan survivors were given leave to live freely within the British boundary of the West Indies.
Some stayed in the Bahamas to start a new life, others sailed for Jamaica to do the same. Only 5 survivors chose to remain aboard the Creole set sail for New Orleans, LA to return to American Slavery ; 3 women, 1 boy, and 1 girl. It wasn't until April 16th of the next year that Washington and the other 18 rebels were freed and joined their companions on West Indian soil as freefolk.
Moreover, for their courage, unity, & nerve, 128 enslaved Afrikan Peoples gained their freedom from this day, making the Creole Slave Revolt THE most successful revolt in U.S. history.
We pour libations of water, speak their names, & offer prayers toward their elevation - especially those lost & returned to bondage.

American Revolution
The American Revolution (1765-1789) was a period of political upheaval in the Thirteen Colonies of British North America. Initially a protest over parliamentary taxes, it blossomed into a rebellion and led, ultimately, to the birth of the United States. Rooted in the ideas of the Enlightenment, the Revolution played an important role in the emergence of modern Western democracies.
Origins: Parliament & the American Identity
In February 1763, the Seven Years' War – or the French and Indian War as the North American theater was called – came to an end. As part of the peace agreement, the vanquished Kingdom of France ceded its colony of New France (Canada) as well as all its colonial territory east of the Mississippi River to its victorious rival, Great Britain. While this left Britain as the dominant colonial power in North America, this newfound supremacy came at a cost, namely a massive war debt. To offset the debt, the British Parliament decided to levy new taxes on the Thirteen Colonies along the eastern seaboard of North America. Much of the war had been fought defending these colonies, after all, and Parliament decided that the colonists should help shoulder the empire's financial burden.
Prior to this decision, Parliament had adhered to an unofficial policy of 'salutary neglect' when dealing with the American colonies. This meant that, despite their royal governors, the colonies were largely left to manage their own affairs, with colonial legislatures overseeing governance and taxation. The influence of these legislatures often equaled if not eclipsed the power of the colony's royally appointed governor. Due to differing foundational and developmental circumstances, each colony maintained its own identity – the Puritan society of New England, the Dutch origins of New York, and the tobacco economy of Virginia, for example, all influenced the formation of their colonial identities. Despite viewing themselves as separate from one another, the colonies were loosely bound by their shared ties to Britain and had united in common defense multiple times during the last century of colonial wars.
At the same time, the American colonists considered themselves Britons, and proudly so. After the Glorious Revolution of 1689, and the constitutional reforms that went with it, the British were viewed as the freest people in the world; they were guaranteed a right to representative government (Parliament) as well as the right to self-taxation. The colonists believed that these 'rights of Englishmen' extended to them, as befitting of their English blood and allegiance to the English king; indeed, many of these rights were echoed in the colonies' own charters. The idea that Parliament could directly tax the colonies, therefore, went against this notion; since no Americans were represented in Parliament, Parliament had no constitutional authority to tax them (i.e. taxation without representation). Parliament, of course, disagreed, arguing that the Americans were virtually represented, as was the case with the thousands of Englishmen who owned no property and could not vote. It was this fundamental disagreement over the Americans' rights and liberties – expressed in the guise of taxation – that lay at the heart of the American Revolution and the birth of the United States.

Here I am, at home, all by myself because my parents are on their way back from dropping Julien off at university. Their flight has landed at least, but it'll take them about 45 minutes to get home. It's kind of silly that they went with him, since they only stayed for a few hours to help him move in, but I get it. Their first child is off to university again. Never mind the child they left at home. I'm teasing. Mom was going to stay home with me and only Dad go, but I told her I would be fine. H's mom picked me up for ballet and dropped me back off, so it was an easy going day.
I hated that I had to let my brother leave again. They had to leave pretty early to get to the airport this morning, so Julien came in and woke me up like he promised he would do, and I grabbed him and refused to let go. I did eventually of course, but I didn't want to. He texted me after Mom and Dad left for the airport again and he told me that he's all set up and already met with one of his friends.
Come to think of it, I don't know why I didn't stay at H's house tonight. Her mom has to pick me up for ballet again tomorrow because my parents have this church thing they're doing all day tomorrow. We would have had so much fun. I can't wait until cookie season starts back up again because we're having slumber parties at my place again when we have early booths. I can't wait until meetings start back up. I miss everyone dearly!
I'm going to start getting ready for bed and then I might game for a while until my parents are in. I don't want to go to bed until I know they're home safe.
