okay, you've convinced me to try sprinting lol! I always beat myself up for procrastinating on writing until it's too late in the day and then hating that I can't write for an extended period bc when I actually find the focus/motivation to write it's like 11PM. I think I (partly) procrastinate bc I *know* earlier in the evening I'll be too distracted by other stuff (texts, having to make dinner, wanting to watch a show or other stuff etc) to properly write. But if I only do it in bursts...it may work. Is there a specific app or anything you use or is really just set a timer on your phone and go?
That's exciting! I love watching writers try out new things!
I personally use the "Sprinto Bot" on Discord if you have your own server you can add it to, but literally any App or Clock can work for you. Just set the timer for 15, 20, or 25 minutes and just write. And then give yourself a break before doing another one, or call it done for the day if you just want to slide in something, yah know.
(25 minutes working, 5 minute break, is known as the Pomodoro Method, but as I mentioned in the other post I find 25 minutes too long, I start picking up my phone and getting side tracked. On bad days I also find 5 minutes too short a break. So it might take a few tries until you find a specific number combination that works for you)
Ultimately though, it may not work for you at all, but everyone I've talked into trying sprinting has at least found something from it to incorporate into their own specific writing toolset <3
I'm a night owl too, because of earlier in the day distractions, but if I start at 11pm I can usually run a sprint from 11:05-11:25, then have a 10 minute break, and then set another sprint to run between 11:35-11:55. Which nets me 40 minutes of writing a night. And sometimes that's 200 words, sometimes it's 500. On really, really, good nights I can get as many as 900 words in 2 sprints, but I've not been doing that well recently.
Ultimately the number doesn't matter all that much, it's just a way for me to talk myself into doing something. It used to be that I'd go "Urgh, I've only got an hour left? I can't settle into writing and get a good chunk done in that time, I'll leave it until tomorrow" and weeks would go by like that. Literal months Rofl
But if I've got twenty minutes, I can set a timer and do 200 words. It's progress, and I'll take any forward momentum when I'm neck deep in the second act of a manuscript lol!

Thank you so much for your lovely tags @inkovert! 💛🌼💛
As for that first excerpt...it's a memory Aaliyah has of first meeting Jax (her partner) and the relationship he and his younger brother Quin have. As an older sibling myself, I'm having a lot of fun exploring their different dynamics!
Find the word tag
Filling out an old one from @charlesjosephwrites (miss you, friend 🌸) for understood, color, tall, and open!
From Stars and Ships:
Tall:
To her, an orphan with nobody and nothing but herself, she couldn’t imagine the chain around his ankle, the constant weight, the way he always looked over his right shoulder just to double check. “He’s mine,” Jax had replied, not as tall or broad shouldered, but just as solemn and calm. “All I know is looking after him. It’ll always be this way.” She’d understood then, what he was saying. It’s this way. Aaliyah was invited to join them, to become part of the crew, but Quin would always be there, and nobody and nothing would separate him from his brother.
Color:
Jax poked around and then led the way to a small café patio, the wicker seats a lurid pink. Aaliyah couldn’t help but wrinkle her nose at the color as she sat. Jax’s eyes laughed at her. It’s festive, he meant. “It’s an eyesore,” she replied out loud, and then hoped the approaching waitress hadn’t heard.
From Cemetery Sisters:
Understood:
“I don’t want to like you just because you’re the first person who’s actually understood me,” Madeleine said, holding her hand out, keeping him back. Azrail frowned, bemused. “Isn’t that a perfectly good reason to like someone?”
Open:
“Pack extra,” Miguel advised. “Charlie is working today, and he always steals my stuff. I think he has a special thing for Poh Poh’s hollow vegetable.” “Just tell him it’s covered in stinky tofu sauce,” Madeleine said, opening the fridge and pulling out leftovers. “Tofu that’s fermented.” Miguel laughed. “I don’t think he’ll even understand what that word means.”
No pressure tags for @toribookworm22 @talesofsorrowandofruin @inkovert @sarandipitywrites @avrablake @author-a-holmes and anyone else who'd like to play! Your words are ring, time, notice, and force. Bonus: piano!

I've been thinking about starting some discourse within writeblr. I don't have any IRL author friends and so I rarely know how other authors view or feel about things unless I just happen upon it in a post on social media. I just think it'd be interesting getting a wider perspective on certain things from a variety of writers/authors from different backgrounds. I think there's so many debates within the writer/reader community that can easily be looked at as a black and white issue (very much so in this modern age when people tend to have knee jerk responses/reactions to things without appreciating the nuance to the issue) but it's actually far more complex than any one person could fathom. Most of the things I've wanted others to weigh in on I don't think are too controversial...some of them are just trivial things that have bugged me/I have opinions about and some are topics where I'm like I genuinely don't think there's a right answer or a solution to this issue.
So yeah. Would be cool to see if people would be interested in something like that. I haven't decided what it would look like - maybe a question/topic that I post weekly and people can reblog with their thoughts/opinions in the post or tags? Idk. I also know that once I put it out there I have no control over what gets said or what debates get started so I just worry about starting some unnecessary drama. That's honestly the complete opposite of the purpose of this, it's specifically to be open minded and hear different people's side of things and have a healthy discourse. So...we'll see
#inkoverted thoughts#I think that last part is what makes me hesitate to do this#like it could either go really well or really badly lol#but it would be cool to see how others respond to the idea or if people have any interest in it

"fuck it, just hit post" - a 2024 writeblr resolution
In December I wrote a little rant about how much better I might feel if I stopped feeling beholden to put out aesthetic "content" and just shared the raw truth of my art and writing drafts. @inkovert also had some lovely thoughts on that post that inspired me.
So here's my best crack at it! Similar to @winterandwords CalmWriMo but as (hopefully) a lasting commitment to the whole year, Fuck It, Just Hit Post aims for me to share more regularly regardless of whether I consider the work "polished" enough to post or even if it gets 2 notes.
As someone who notoriously edits as they write, constantly worrying if their words are resounding enough for someone to read, I'd like to challenge myself to the "fuck it" mentality. Even if I get nothing from it--no notes, no new followers--my hope is that it'll shift my mindset away from "content creation" to the joyful act of creating, period.
If you'd like to join me in this New Year's Resolution, you can post whatever you please (doodles, wip updates, rambles, oc content, etc) under the tag #writeblr.fijhp ! I will track the tag and do my best to reblog everyone's work <3
This is more of a philosophy than a writeblr challenge, which means you can start and stop at anytime. Post once under the tag, or flood it. Who cares! You can do whatever you want forever. And the "fuck it" mentality will always be waiting if you'd like to try it out.

Writecamp Day 5
Thanks for the tag, @theeccentricraven
For DragonShifters, I'll choose the dialogue prompt: "Your heart may be heavy, but what of your sword? You can raise that, can't you?"
Chesa did her best to keep her hands steady as she held the sword in her hands. She was never really the kind of person to hold sharp objects, much less swords.
"You can rely on your claws, but you need to rely on other weapons too," Omari explained as he circled around her, brandishing a sword of his own.
"I really don't want to do this," Chesa grimaced.
"Well, I'm sorry, but you don't have much of a choice," the nineteen-year-old boy replied with a deep sigh, "your heart may be heavy, but what of your sword? You can raise that, can't you?"
Chesa bit her lip. This time, her hands did tremble around the handle of the blade and she clenched her jaw as Omari's question rang in her mind.
Could she really raise this sword?

Wow. My first thought reading this was — I'm so glad someone finally said it.
I've been so hesitant/scared to share this opinion because I felt that it would be misconstrued or received the wrong way, or that fantasy writers (which make up what feels like 90%+ of writing communities) would feel attacked/demonized by it. I felt like pointing out the elephant in the room was a sure way to ostracize myself from the very community that I wanted to be a part of.
I understand that writeblr and other writing communities grew out of online fandoms/fanfic, many of which included fantasy-focused stories/media, so it's not surprising that these communities are largely made up of fantasy writers themselves. But as someone who's a minority in these spaces (in more ways than one), it's difficult to feel included or even seen when every post you see circulate about wanting to follow or build a community with other writeblrs specifically says "reblog if you write fantasy so I can follow you!" as the first bullet point in the description. As if you couldn't throw a stone in any direction and be guaranteed to hit a fantasy writer.
I am not by any means saying that fantasy writers or any writers have it easy when it comes to getting others to read their work. Of course that is a glaring problem that writers in general struggle with in online spaces, and with a lot more frequency these days. But you can't ignore the fact that if you do write fantasy you already have more of a leg up in getting someone's attention than if you don't, given that the majority of people in these communities write fantasy and therefore are interested in reading other fantasy writers' work. Does that seem like a stretch to you? Okay fine. Forget even getting someone to read your work. Let's focus solely on finding and connecting with other writers like you with whom you can talk about your shared interest in the specific genre you write. Fantasy writers are far more likely to be successful at this than writers of lesser represented genres, like thriller or literary fiction. Simply because these communities are saturated with fantasy.
This is by no means a callout post, nor am I even sure I'm looking for — or can even think of — a solution to this problem. But I just wish at the very least there was more of an acknowledgement that it is a problem people in this community face? Yes, everyone has preferences. People are entitled to like what they like, and avoid what they don't. But when fantasy writers/readers choose not to engage with works that are not explicitly fantasy, you have a wealth of content/writers to connect with and turn to. When non-fantasy writers do the same with fantasy? We have very little else to turn to. It doesn't feel like we have a choice. It's so hard to find other people who are like us. Which leads to feelings of being excluded and like you don't belong (sound familiar?).
I remember making a post searching for other litfic writers on writeblr and, despite a few boosts from followers and friends, hardly anyone responded. It was discouraging, seeing how hard it was to simply find other writers in my genre when it seemed to come so easy for those who wrote fantasy. I truly started to believe that I was the only litfic writer on here even though I knew rationally that couldn't be true. People have stopped posting their writing on writeblr for a multitude of reasons, but a lot of the reason I stopped posting was because —despite having complete confidence in my ability as a writer and a deep devotion to the story I was telling — I felt my work was inferior simply because I didn't write fantasy and thus was thoroughly convinced that no one in this community could possibly be interested in it.
All that is to say that, seeing this post and the few replies it received was validating, knowing that someone had the courage to say it and that I'm not alone in this feeling. I hope that all the non-fantasy writers out there who have ever felt a similar way or who relate to anything said in my post know that they are valid and that they do belong here. And I can only hope you are able to connect with and find others like you someday.
I’m about to break my silence
#inkoverted thoughts#sorry to hijack your post OP#but also I literally read your intro post pinned to your blog and was like....where have you been all my life ???#you write litfic and gothic fiction?? literally my two fav genres?#instant follow#but I truly hope someone resonated with literally anything I said in this post#and that fantasy writers everywhere don't come for me and take this the wrong way 😅#its just something to think about that you probably *haven't* had to think about since you're in the majority#and I'm not saying ALL fantasy writers are like this either bc I know someone will probably jump to that conclusion#I'm sure some of you don't read exclusively fantasy or dabble in other genres or prefer fantasy but will read anything that catches your ey#but I hope you can realize that...that's not the point

WIP Wednesday (on a Friday)
Tagged by my wonderful friends @thegreatobsesso and @winterandwords for a WIP Wednesday, and following the emerging trend I am not posting this on a Wednesday. :D
I'm gonna tag them both back, and also add @inkovert, @dyrewrites, @space-writes, @isherwoodj, and @oh-no-another-idea to share some recent lines from your WIPs!
This comes from the Definitely Not a Fanfiction current WIP I'm working on, which is both unbelievable fun and also spiralling madly out of control:
Bellamy waved a hand. “No, no, of course not. I’ll admit I’m aggrieved that something of this magnitude hadn’t come to my notice, but then there is so much to keep track of. Not surprising something might have slipped beneath my radar. I merely thought I would offer my assistance, if you needed it. A group that has influence to the extent I’m led to believe this one has, it could be valuable to have more bodies.” “Only one gang allowed in this town,” Dalton said, examining his nails. “Yours.” Bellamy cut his eyes in his direction, a distinctly calculating expression crossing his face. He locked it down a moment later, returning his gaze to Rush. “Have you ever considered gagging him?” “Frequently,” Rush said, with such speed and gravity that Eric couldn’t quite conceal his guffaw. Rush slid him a quick look with a twitch of his lips. “We appreciate your offer. We’ve got it in hand.” “Are you sure? You hardly seem to have control of that dog of yours, let alone anything else.” Bellamy's eyes slid towards Dalton. “Careful,” Rush said, mild. “He bites.”

Valeriano's Manor sits upon a floating island about 3300 meters above sea level in a páramo ecosystem. The manor itself incorporates various Gothic turrets and arches and is surrounded by 25 acres of private moorland. It is home to many owls, rabbits, white-tailed deer, coati, frailejones, mosses, shrubs, hummingbirds, and high-altitude foxes. For more on páramo ecosystems, click here.

Writeblr Positivity Tag
Hi @inkovert! Thank you, as always, for the tag. Just a quick shout-out; if you don't know Inkovert yet, please please please go check out their WIP, My Dearest Enemy. Also, do you like having in-depth discussions about writing with other up-and-coming authors? Participate in @inkovert's Spilled Ink Saturdays. The first session (on book-to-screen adaptations) was a lot of fun!
✦ What motivates you to write?
I agree with @inkovert. It's not that I'm motivated to write, exactly... It's more that I feel I... have to? There's a sort of internal inertia that keeps pulling me back to fiction. Maybe it's obsession? Maybe it's Maybelline? 💃😉 No, but seriously, I think it may be connected to this weird instinct I have to document things? To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, when I was in my mid-twenties, I went through a terrifying break-in. I kid you not; there was a literal man with a balaclava crouched in my shower in the middle of the night. How did I respond? By screaming, obviously. But after the screaming? I called up my boyfriend and narrated every single detail of what I saw and heard while trying to escape the house with my family. In my mind, I felt it was critical to tell him what was going on, not because I thought it would help catch the culprit(s) (we didn't know if there were more), save us from whatever bitter fate awaited, etc., but kind of in the same way people carve "I was here" into walls? If I was going to die (which was a possibility; a friend's father died in similar circumstances at around the same time), I needed someone to know what I'd seen, to know that I'd seen... So, do I write because I'd die if I didn't? No. I write because I'm going to die anyway. Because I know I'm going to die.
✦ A line/short snippet of your writing that you are most proud of/happy with. If not, maybe share a line of someone else's work you love (just please credit them):
I can do you one better! Because @inkovert kindly tagged me, I'd like to return the favour by referring you to their Wattpad page, where you can read their current WIP, My Dearest Enemy
✦ Which OC makes you smile every time you think/talk about them, and what are they like?
Haha, I don't know if any of the OCs in The Sorcerer's Apprentice make me smile. They all worry me a lot. By accepting an apprenticeship with the sorcerer Valeriano, Altaluna is heading straight into a nest of venomous vipers, and they are going to maim her; they are going to maim her for life. Every time she feels optimistic or wow-ed by the glitz and the glam of her new environment, I cringe internally. My poor, sweet summer child! Valeriano, on the other hand, is a monster, so it's hard to smile when thinking of him. Hmm... maybe the only character I genuinely smile around is Cucufate, the talking monkey. He's the only character whose behaviour and snide comments can be underplayed as just 'animal antics,' which means he's the only character who can get away with giving people a little of what they truly deserve. It's hard not to love him for it.
✦ What process of writing do you enjoy the most?
Again, I have to agree with @inkovert. The editing process means no blank page, and no blank page means (rejoice!) no existential suffering. My first drafts are always shit and a disappointment. But my second drafts? Dost thou want to live deliciously? With the second draft, I know where I'm going, what's happening, where to trim the fat and everything I need to make the story what I wanted it to be in the first place. Usually, I downright discard the first draft and write the entire story from scratch, but better, so much better. And editing the second (or sometimes, third) draft? Pure, unadulterated bliss. Goodbye, low self-esteem, goodbye doubts; cue me some Nina Simone, why don't you?
✦ What part of writing do you think you are the best at? (Yes stroke your own ego it's okay)
Editing, re-drafting. I'm good at figuring out what's wrong and have no trouble whatsoever massacring my darlings.
✦ What is something in the writeblr community that is most enjoyable?
The community! I love participating in tag & ask games, reading people's work, celebrating my mutual's triumphs, and sharing my progress. I don't have any writer friends outside of Tumblr (apart from academic writer friends, though they're a very different kettle of fish), so I really appreciate being able to log on and be met with all this creativity.
✦ A writing tool/device you use that helps you with writing? (It could be speech to text, a writing program etc)
Okay, so first thing first: I have ADHD. Any thought I have is an explosion that simultaneously sends spin-off thoughts in every imaginable direction, which, in turn, send spin-off thoughts in every imaginable direction, and so on and so forth, and on and on, until some of the spin-offs reach a dead end and their line withers, and/or I reach the limits of my capacity to hold all these thoughts in my mind and spontaneously combust. Instead of trying to fight this multi-generative tendency (this leads to a state of paralysis where I can't do anything), I've found a way to let the 'explosions' take the lead without overloading my systems, so to speak. Basically, I figured that if I stored every direction my mind went in somewhere other than my mind, I could let it do its thing without risking burnout. For that, I use MindNode, a visual brainstorming software. And let me tell you, it's been a life-saver. Now, when considering a scene, I document every possible route available to the characters and/or the setting, assign each ramification a score (for example, +1 Worldbuilding, +1 Foreshadowing, +1 Symbolism, +1 Character Development, -1 Cliché, -1 Undermines Tension, -1 Repetitive, etc.), and then choose the one with the highest score to write out. This method is obviously quite time-consuming, but it does have some unique strengths beyond helping me deal with my ADHD: (1) it ensures that there are no superfluous scenes in the grand design, (2) it ensures that all scenes are layered and fulfil multiple story functions at once, (3) it discourages going with the first option that presents itself (usually cliché, in my case), (4) it encourages out-of-the-box creative thinking, (5) and, finally, it's likely to lead to scenes that surprise you, the writer (for example, I was shocked by how many routes led to my character's death, lol). So, yeah, MindNode has been very helpful to me.
✦ A piece of worldbuilding that you like in your own story? (It could be the magic system, a particular place in the story, a law, etc)
I love the magic system, but I'm not sure I'll reveal anything more about it before publication than I already have in this post. You're just going to have to wait and see ;)
✦ Tag some people whose works you love/have been your biggest supporters:
I follow TONS of talented writers on this site, among them: @inkovert, @that-chibi-writer, @tate-lin, @kingkendrick7, @ettawritesnstudies, @blind-the-winds, @aquadestinyswriting, @avrablake, @alinacapellabooks, @lordfenric-writes, @moonscribbler, @cee-grice, @sender-paulson, @sarah-sandwich, @liv-is, @athenswrites, @junypr-camus, @rubywrite, @winterandwords, @salmonandfox, @merlina87, @songsofsomnia, @words-after-midnight, @lucianinsanity, @talesofsorrowandofruin, @nanashi23, @sam-glade, @at-thezenith, @kestalsblog, @kaatiba, @theunboundwriter, and so many more!

someone left the comment: 'I adore this book. literally' on my story today and like.
the dopamine rush that will leave me with for the next several months - if not years - is unmatched.
like. we always talk about the power of a writer's words, but I don't know if readers understand the power of their words. for those who read a piece of work that they enjoy and want to express that to the author but are racking their brains to figure out how or give up trying because they're self-conscious or unsure what to say. something as simple as "this shit? I like it" could be the difference in a writer giving up on a story or seeing it to completion.
at the end of the day, we just want to know that our stories are reaching someone. and that they matter to someone other than us.
often times our stories are an extension of ourselves. and telling us that they matter, makes us feel like we matter, too. it's not just a validation of our talent and skill, but a validation of our purpose and existence. and wanting that is nothing to be ashamed of.
#inkoverted thoughts#emphasis on wanting our stories to reach *someone*#Some ONE#it could literally just be one person and that would make all the difference in the world#I just want to leave this earth knowing that my writing had the power to touch someone's heart the same way my favorite authors touched min

The Fifth Day of Whitemas
Thanks for the tag, @theeccentricraven
I'll be choosing The sting of heartbreak
Sorry for being late. Life's kept me busy. I'll be using chapter thirty-seven of Transcendants: Phoenix Rising (book 4)
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
"Paigey?" They said, "I've been meaning to talk to you about something."
"U-um... okay," she nodded. She felt her nerves begin to tingle and it made her stomach hurt. Why did she feel like something was wrong?
Blu took the Evaran's hands into theirs, running their thumbs over her knuckles. "The Polyamorous group separated. We're not together anymore," they sighed and they looked at Paige, "and... I think we should break up. But I want to stay friends with you."
Paige felt a chill run through her chest. She stared ahead.
'No... nononono... why...? Why?! WHY COULDN'T WE FIGURE IT OUT?! WHAT DID WE DO!? WHAT DID I DO?!'
Her thoughts screamed at her.
"Paige?" She jolted slightly and Blu gave her a worried look. "Do you still wanna be friends?"
"Of course," Paige replied with a smile, "I'm glad you've got Ventus. I hope you two are happy together. I... I'll be right back."
Before Blu could say anything, the Dual-Blooded girl turned and ran out of the courtyard.
Blu rubbed their wrist. "Did... did I make the right choice, Ven?"
Ventus wrapped her arm around them. "You did. It was healthier for both of you. And if anything bad happens... we'll be there to pick up the pieces," she kissed Blu's head and the Evaran leaned into her, closing their eyes with a soft sigh.
Paige ran through the Ember Forest. She jumped over a log and when her feet hit the ground, she was aware of the tears falling down her face.
A sob rose in her chest but she swallowed it back down.
"Paige," Silverhowl said within her mind. "No!" Paige screamed and she yelped as she slid down a slope and she hit the ground hard.
She panted heavily, tears blurring her vision. She turned over on her back and gripped her face as she sobbed at the air.
"No, no, no!" She screamed bitterly, her body shaking hard. The memories of her being happy rushed through her mind but they were washed away by a wave of sadness, fear and anger.
She was angry. Angry at herself, angry at Blu, angry at whatever god had made her like this. She must've been cursed.
She sobbed until her sides hurt, until her stomach lurched and until she fell asleep.
Silverhowl stepped out and curled around her host. She sighed softly and looked at the sky as it turned a colorful mix of red, orange, purple and pink.

Thanks @owlsandwich for tagging me! Being obsessed with your own work is so relatable
Last song I listened to:
Vielleicht Vielleicht--the Blumengarten cover
Currently watching:
I guess you can say I'm watching Jujustsu Kaisen and DBZ right now because I was in the middle of watching them a few months ago then got bored and stopped, but I still plan to finish them.
Spicy/savory/sweet:
It's sweet for me! I know it's bad but I can't help but eat sweets every day.
Relationship status:
I've never actually been in a relationship. I'm still looking for someone I click with.
Current obsession:
Those My Little Pony infection AUs on tiktok. They're so creepy I love them.
