😍😍😍😍😍😍
A brand new 4K restoration from the only surviving film material, a 35mm theatrical print! from Vinegar Syndrome
This is very cool and a long time coming, if a 4K Blu-ray doesn’t excite you, there’s an amazing collectible VHS too!
CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL has always warmed my heart like a baked potato! I’m looking forward to owning it in 4K at last!
I have a long history with TREY PARKER’S CANNIBAL! I was first handed a bootleg VHS back in the 90’s and instantly fell in love with it, spending many an hour persuading friends of its delights and subjecting them to multiple viewings. Fast forward to 2008, and I produced and directed the WORLD PREMIERE large-scale (west end cast) stage production of TREY PARKERS MASTERPIECE ‘CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL, THE MUSICAL’ advertised as ‘The World's BEST and ONLY cannibalistic cowboy boy comedy’ at the tender age of 28.
Starting in London and then transferring to Edinburgh for four weeks, our 6-week London run was scheduled in the west end shortly after but tragically cut short for various logistical reasons (and Trey had a little show he was concentrating on... book of something). Crazy but fun-filled times. Some of the cast have gone on to become West End stars; our POLLY PRY Aimie Atkinson just finished a stellar West End run as the lead in Pretty Woman, and other cast members have won multiple awards, including Olivier and Tony's!
Mounting the first large-scale production was an amazing experience, and the show in other forms has continued to thrive ever since with a brand new large-scale pro run in the past decade and smaller but mighty productions across the world every year. Keeping that shpadoinkle feeling alive in the baked potatoes of audience members across the globe! I’m thrilled to be a part of that legacy. Working on Trey Parker's first musical was an amazing opportunity.
My history with Trey Parker goes back further.
I was one of the first in the U.K. to circulate Trey Parker and Matt Stone's rough and ready ‘Santa vs. Jesus/Spirit of Christmas’ (an early viral homemade South Park Pilot) thanks to an American buddy who got his copy from FOX exec Brian Graden way back in ‘95. It was created as a viral VHS Christmas card (we didn’t have memes, internet, or iMessage; heck, we didn’t have internet then!). Viral memes were all manual. I’d show it at house parties up and down the U.K., copying it freely for anyone that wanted a copy (as was intended by its creators). The ageing hipster in me gladly states, “I knew about South Park before it was cool,” and in this case it’s weirdly true. In fact, if you’re in the U.K. and have a VHS copy, it may well be from me and my master copy 🤣.
I was over the bloody moon to bring Trey and Matt's masterpiece to the stage on such a large scale. Reworking parts of the script for the new setting. Ten years later, I was a producer on the multi-award-winning West End premiere run of TOXIC AVENGER THE MUSICAL! Keeping those TROMA musicals alive! I’ve been working out which show to produce next to complete my theatrical trilogy of musicals. POULTRYGEIST perhaps?
Trey Parker did some wonderful and supportive PR and broadsheet interviews for us back in the day, and Cannibal! head honcho Jason McHugh exec produced and played Mr. Mills (check out his WIKIPEDIA page for a photo of him in costume). We got some amazing 5-star reviews (BBC, Metro, etc.) and some brutal 1-star reviews too (The Stage, the Scotsman), as well as some amazing TV and radio coverage. Our illustrated poster ended up in Dynamite comics ‘ART OF TROMA.‘ many years on. Good times.
I spoke with both Jason and C!TM star Dian Bachar these past weeks, as well as the fine folk at 𝖵𝗂𝗇𝖾𝗀𝖺𝗋 𝖲𝗒𝗇𝖽𝗋𝗈𝗆𝖾 , to congratulate them! Everyone is rightfully excited about Cannibals 4K debut. This Blu-ray is going to be stacked. With original cast members such as Dian and Jason providing new, never-before-seen interviews. There will be some great past stage show stuff on there too. Including interviews about its debut in New York. Congrats to Lloyd Kaufman and the Troma Entertainment team on this world-first transfer.
I’ve brushed off some wonderful archival material from our show recently. Stuff I haven’t seen or looked at in 15 years since our production. There’s some really great video, design, and photographic material I’ve never shown anyone. I’ve discussed this material with and offered the exclusive license to VS for future pressings if they want it. I may post some of it here or on our old musical channel if I can remember the passwords (it’s been 15 years).
Break a leg to all involved! Exciting times to be a CANNIBAL! fan.

Movie Reviews - In Search of Darkness: A Journey into Iconic 80s Horror / The Go-Go’s
What a great week it was for 80s nostalgia! I got to review 2 documentaries about important pieces of 80s pop culture: 80s horror movies and the band The Go-Go’s:
In Search of Darkness: A Journey into Iconic 80s Horror
The 80s was possibly one of the greatest decades of all time for the horror movie genre. There were plenty of classics that came before and after the 80s, but there was something about the Reagan era, the rise of VCR / video stores, MTV’s influence on pop culture, and the horror masters of that era rising to address societal fears and anxieties. Someone could write an entire book or make a mini-series about it and lucky for us, there is a 265 minute (4 plus hours!!!) documentary from David A. Weiner about 80s horror movies that is premiering on Shudder this weekend. The doc was a crowd-funding success on both Kickstarter and Indiegogo before it had a festival premiere in 2019.
so many 80s references in this movie poster
What made this fun to watch is that it is a very similar structure to VH1′s I Love The... / Best Week Ever shows, where there’s several interviewees analyzing and joking about the topic in a segment. In this case, the doc begins in 1980 and it goes chronologically to 1989. The stand out horror flicks of that decade get a brief segment and in between each year there is a segment about a general topic about the decade as a whole (music soundtracks, horror fanbase, etc). Just about every film has at least one cast or crew member offering insight. It’s very comprehensive and goes deep into the genre and the era to say the least.
Among my favorite interviewees are Joe Bob Briggs, John Carpenter (who I was lucky enough to see in concert in 2017), Joe Dante, Kane Hodder (who I met at Spooky World in 1994), Lloyd Kaufman (who I spoke with prior to my job interview at Troma in 2001 - a long story in and of itself), Heather Langenkamp, Harry Manfedini, Kelli Maroney (who I met at 2018 Rock and Shock), Cassandra Peterson, Ryan Turek, and Alex Winter. I watched this movie a little at a time as opposed to all at once and because of that it was a lot of fun chipping away at the decade. If I was watching this with a bunch of friends over drinks it could be a fun horror party too.
John Carpenter, one of the many interviewees and one of the best
As a child of the 80s I have a fondness and a passion for the decade. But what I dug about this doc was that this went beyond the obvious thoughts about each film and it went into a lot about how some of these lesser known cult films actually influenced films that came after the 80s. Considering how many films got covered, there were tons I wished had been covered (i.e. Trick or Treat). But being as long as it was they had a ton to cram into it to make it ONLY 4+ hours. Towards the end, they briefly address how many horror films are only available on VHS and didn’t make the jump to DVD or blu ray or streaming. This is something I addressed in my short doc Video Visions and I actually wished they had spent a little more time on that. But overall I say: Sit back late at night and have a blast with this fun nostalgia-fest!!

The Go-Go’s
The 5-piece L.A. band The Go-Go’s came out of the late 70s punk scene but their sound evolved and became more new wave / power pop. They were in the right place at the right time not only riding the new wave phenomenon but also just as MTV and music videos were arising. I first became aware of them around ‘83 / ‘84 as I discovered their music videos for “Our Lips are Sealed”, “We Got the Beat”, “Vacation” and “Head Over Heels”. The band driving around and jumping in the fountain in the “Our Lips are Sealed” video is such a celebration of youth and having fun in 1980s LA! Of course just-my-luck I was discovering them towards the end of the band, just before they broke up in 1985. They each went into their own solo directions. I was into singer Belinda Carlisle’s early solo albums (she was also one of my early crushes too). When I was an intern at Spanky Pictures circa 1998, the group was working with Ted Demme on developing a narrative film which never came to fruition. The group reunited here and there in the 90s, but it was 1999 when they reunited, toured and even recorded a new album. In the Summer of 2000, I saw them co-headline a concert with The B-52′s and The Psychedelic Furs, and The Go-Go’s were the best band there. They still had the beat! Now the group is finally getting the music documentary treatment they deserve. The doc premieres on Showtime tonight!
movie poster
Director Allison Ellwood previously did the 2-part documentary History of the Eagles (which I named my #9 Documentary of 2013), a doc where the band’s history included a great deal of California’s history as well. So it makes perfect sense that she is documenting another L.A. group. To the average listener, The Go-Go’s seemed like wholesome girls next door, but they really weren’t. The doc gets into their drug additions, health issues ( including guitarist Jane Wiedlin’s history with depression), and much more. They came together through the L.A. punk scene. The doc didn’t get into this, but Carlisle was a member of The Germs, which is surprising to say the least. I kinda wished Pat Smear (later of Nirvana and Foo Fighters) had been interviewed. All 5 Go-Go’s as well as early former members, manager, and producers are interviewed here. But what I really dug was some of the non-band interviewees including Miles A. Copeland III of IRS Records, Rolling Stone and MTV News alum Chris Connelly, Stewart Copeland of The Police, and MTV VJ Martha Quinn.
The Go-Go’s circa early 80s (cool Motorhead shirt Jane!)
In the last few years, it’s been kinda cool to see so many music docs about that era on artists such as Quiet Riot, Colin Hay, and even radio stations like WLIR. Something about that era seems so much better than right now. I mean, anything is better than right now, but the music and pop culture of the early 80s was so exciting and new. I kinda wished that Ellwood had spent a little more time on the group’s reunion, their 2001 album, and how they are still a band today. It’s not nearly as comprehensive as the Eagles doc, but it goes way deeper and is way better than the VH1 Behind the Music (which the band didn’t care for).
The Go-Go’s and Allison Ellwood (third from left) at the Sundance premiere early this year
The biggest statement that this doc makes is that this was an all-female rock band who wrote and performed their own music and went to #1 on the album charts. No all-female rock band has done that before or after. The haters might look at it as “their not bad for a girl band”, but the reality was they were better than most male bands. To this day they have not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and yet so many less deserving artists are (that means you Bon jovi!). They were a great band and definitely paved the way for a lot of all-female rock bands that came along later. They deserve respect and this doc validates that!
