Currently crying in a corner because I remembered that Inuyasha visited the well at least every three days.
And I don’t think he was waiting for Kagome to “come back”
As much as he was waiting/trying to see if the well would open for him
So he could go to her
Because he chose her. Because he thinks they were born for each other. Because since she has people who love her in her era, maybe that’s where she belongs
But he truly believes that he belongs with her, wherever and whenever.

My brain was infected by Inuyasha and to this day I have a weird. attachment. to swords and weapons being forged in stories and I love Naruto and the thought of him learning to make weapons (not really necessarily him using them, just. making them.), so here are my thoughts real quick:
I’ve already stated this before but I’m saying it again: If Naruto learned how to forge swords, he’d immediately give his all to make Sasuke a sword
I love the thought of Naruto using one of Kurama’s fangs to make a sword (here’s where the inuyasha stuff makes itself known) and I love the thought of Kurama being like “if you use my tooth for this, do not give it to that Uchiha brat. Look at me. I’m not kidding.”
Naruto making weapons from every tailed beast (not sure…what exactly he’d get from…a couple of them…so I’m not gonna think too hard on it)
I really really love the idea of Naruto making weapons, maybe the tailed beast weapons^, and then like. scattering them. maybe not even on purpose, so there’s just these crazy strong weapons that seem like they should be from Tales of Old™️, real prophecy-like weapons, but they were just made last week on a whim
Naruto having new goggles that he uses while forging <3

This is genuinely one of my favorite little throwaway moments from the manga (that got cut from the anime btw). We have Kagome keeping up a relentless march simply because she saw how many people died to Naraku's latest attack, and that motivates her to stop him even if she's on the brink of wearing herself out. We have Miroku being a good friend and tactfully taking note to point it out to Inuyasha, who's too absorbed by a similar motivation at the moment. Then he just casually tells him he can't just tell a girl he likes her before being a slave driver, Inuyasha not bothering to try denying he did in fact confess to her (which Miroku was eaves-dropping on as usual lol) while Kagome claps in "you tell 'im" approval. Meanwhile Myouga realizes he's missed a lot since he's been gone. 😂

one thing that always gets me whenever i read inuyasha modern au fics is that inuyasha is supposedly "the slacker" or the guy who doesn't try hard on anything academia related, and that always struck me as odd bc you're telling me inuyasha wouldn't be competing with, say, koga for rank 1? that he wouldn't study his ass off in the subjects he's actually interested in? that he wouldn't pour his everything into extracurriculars he cares about? he has his aloof moments in canon but ultimately he's a hard worker and i think that trait should be reflected in aus!
plus if we're thinking about the setting here, inuyasha's canon behavior is greatly influenced by his upbringing (and later lack thereof). putting him in an environment (modern au, lack of youkai discrimination) where his talents are cultivated instead of looked down upon would give us a very different character. it's always interesting to me whenever i see canon-typical inuyasha behavior in an au where his mom is alive because it suggests that his mistrust and gruff behavior are just part of his personality and not largely a result of childhood events. i feel like modern aus are an opportunity to see how he might have grown if not for the death of his mother + father & the consistent threat looming over him as a child. what would his personality be like then? how would his first meeting with kagome go considering that? his dynamics with his older brother? his goals? it's something that could be explored in a fic taking place in the feudal realm but it's kind of difficult to just subtract the discrimination aspect that comes with that setting...just things to think abt ig!

@drakowulf36579:Seems you're quite popular with the mares. don't let Kagome find out. *smirk*
Inuyasha: What are you talking about? Kagome?
Inuyasha: *sighs*
Inuyasha: Look. I meant what I said when I told you she wasn't here. Kagome's been gone for a while, and... and I don't think she's coming back.

Preliminary Poll
Original cast of InuYasha
Tumblr media
Submission reason:
Tw: grooming, pedophillia. The sequel Yashahime fridged half of the og cast, and then changed the remaining og cast members' characterization so that not only did none of them care their friends and family were missing(the og series was about found family coming together), but they all became caricatures of their closest stereotype. Sesshomaru might've gotten it the worst though, as he literally went from ending the original series with learning to value life, sort of accepting his younger brother exists, and specifically caring about a young child he ended up adopting, to literally having had children with that child a few years later (the child was still a teen at the time), betraying his younger brother (leading to the younger brother, the younger brother's wife, and Sesshomaru's child-bride being fridged, and separated from their infant children), and abandoning his own infants in the woods for literal years. What the sequel did to all of its characters, especially Sesshomaru, caused the fandom to fight for months, resulting in large portions of the fandom leaving, permanently (so far) changed Sesshomaru's reputation (from being a stoic pretty boy that half the fandom was attracted to, to being, at best, a asshole groomer).

Summary:
Inuyasha is the leader of a currently defunct punk rock band, The Strays. His other bandmates, Sango and Miroku, agree to help him win back their former manager to reinvent their sound for the current era of music. He trusts her more than anyone, believing that only she can bring them back from obscurity, but time doesn't always heal wounds. Inuyasha has to accept his past mistakes and show that this is the only way forward for him. The consequence of failure is a life spent alone, without his fated mate.
It has been six years since Kagome first managed The Strays, and at first, she thought the band would be her ticket to success. It was, but not in the way she imagined. It had taken a toll on her, ruined her for other relationships. She had broken a cardinal rule, never fall in love with a client. Inuyasha Taisho damaged her in so many ways, but now she has a second chance to right the mistakes of the past and take on of her greatest challenges, making The Strays relevant once again.
The music is solid, as is the determination of the band members, but Kagome is unsure whether she can forgive the wounds of the past and move forward with the band in a mutually beneficial future
AN:
Hi! I know it's been a hot minute since I posted anything for this fandom. A lot of readers have been waiting for my MMA AU and, I'm working on it. This idea just sort of shoved all others out of the way and... I'm doing a lot more research on the MMA AU to make it authentic. Hopefully, you enjoy this a bit in it's place, for a while. This fic has... encompassed my whole brain.
I'm obsessed with music... I can't put it any other way. Music talks to me; music is life. I would rather be blind than deaf because living without music feels like a life I could not envision. Then again, I've had terrible vision all my life, so maybe I'm biased. Music allows me to see things that I cannot with vision. It allows me to feel more than words could ever express... and I'm a writer, lol. That being said, I hope my profound love for music... and this ship are expressed in the story that follows.
I'm hoping to get a publicly accessible playlist for this fic, but I have very strong reservations against Spotify, due to how they compensate creators. I'm looking for an alternative but I haven't found anything comparable... then again I'm not a very good judge on the interwebs, lol. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
That being said, there are a few music artists who have GREATLY contributed to this fic: Sick Puppies, Eve 6, Panic! at the Disco, and Imagine Dragons, along with many other artists. I will do my best to mention each of them in the authors comments because... it's important to me. Anyway... for this prologue, its Viva Las Vengeance by Panic! at the Disco.

CHAPTER 1 : You Give Me Highs That Lose My Breath Present day…
Inuyasha shifted in his chair and tried to assure himself that the walls of the tiny Vegas café weren’t closing in on him. It was a stifling summer day, temperatures reaching well over one hundred degrees by noon, and the piddling AC of this place was doing a piss poor job of battling the heat. He plucked at the collar of his t-shirt, desperate for a bit of air movement against his sticky skin.
He had run all the way here from his home, jumping between the tops of the brightly colored buildings in hope that he could work off some excess nervous energy. That hadn’t exactly gone to plan. Inuyasha was still keyed up, unable to settle his pounding heart as another bead of sweat slid from beneath his silver hair and down the back of his neck.
Fucking great, now I’m gonna stink on top of everything else. That’ll be a killer first impression.
Although, it couldn’t really be called a first impression. Even after six years apart, the woman that he waited for with bated breath still knew him better than anyone else on the planet. She had seen him at his best… and very worst.
Could I really make her think any less of me at this point?
His shoulders bunched as he realized the answer to that question was probably a resounding ‘no’.
His leg began to bounce, jingling the long silver chain that hung from his belt loop to the wallet in his back pocket. A hand settled on his knee. Inuyasha glanced up into a pair of sympathetic brown eyes.
“Relax, she’ll be here,” Sango said with a gentle pat. “Besides you’re gonna drive me crazy with all that noise.”
He planted his foot on the floor and straightened. “Why the hell would she come?”
“Because I asked her to,” she replied with a shrug, sitting back in the small wooden chair. “Trust me, shell be here.”
Despite her confident words, Sango seemed just as nervous as him. Her dark gaze was glued to the front windows of the café, darting amongst the people on the sidewalk beyond. She drew her leg up and hugged her arms around it, resting her chin on her knee. Then she went completely still and unblinking, perched on her chair like a silent gargoyle.
Inuyasha’s frown deepened. “I’m just sayin, she has no reason to show after…”
“After you lost your ever living mind?” Sango completed.
“Now, now,” Miroku said from beside her, squeezing her shoulder. “Inuyasha has apologized several times and taken great strides to change his ways. Let’s not rehash the past.”
His golden gaze found the floor, heat working its way up his neck. Geez, a hanyou has one little near-death experience and everyone wanted to make a federal case out of it.
“I don’t know if an apology is going to be enough,” Sango said, almost to herself.
He growled in annoyance, even as the soft white ears on top of his head lowered in shame.
She cut him a sharp look. “Don’t growl at me. What do you expect? You weren’t there for the aftermath of your dumb decisions, you know. You didn’t have to hear her cry over you or convince her to eat when she started losing weight or—”
“I get it!” he snapped. “I’m a dick. I know.”
Sango pursed her lips. “Well, as long as you know.”
Inuyasha snarled.
“Sweetheart,” Miroku soothed while rubbing his hand across her upper back. “Let’s not make this any harder than it has to be.”
“Why? It should be hard for him. It should hurt. We all hurt enough—”
“Argh! What the fuck do you want me to do?” Inuyasha erupted, throwing his hands into the air. “Should I break out the sack cloth and ashes? Would a public stoning do it for you?”
“I just want to know I’m not setting my friend up for another round of your bullshit,” she sneered. “Tell me you’ve got it together.”
“I do! I do! How many times you want me to fuckin say it?”
Sango opened her mouth to deliver another verbal blow when the bell above the café door tinkled. Three sets of eyes flew to the front windows and Inuyasha snapped his mouth shut, trying not to swallow his suddenly thick tongue.
She was here…Kagome.
She lifted her sunglasses up to rest in her dark hair and scanned the few tables before her eyes lit on Sango in the back.  When her gaze finally landed on him, those baby-blues grew wide like a deer caught in the headlights.
Inuyasha cursed under his breath and dragged a clawed hand down his face. “You didn’t tell her I was going to be here, did you?”

The Dog, the Cat and the Boar
As long as humankind could remember, the wild lands of Japan had always been inhabited with Yōkai. Some large, some small, some dangerous, some inoffensive. Some evil, some benevolent.
The Dog, the Cat and the Boar cared little for such labels. They could not remember how long they had known each other. Their differences only cemented their bond, one's qualities complimenting the others' flaws. They were a team.
They were a family.
The Dog, the Cat and the Boar roamed the lands together. They were all the ruler of their own domain, and they would sometimes part to attend personal matters – but at the end of each quest, they would always meet up for a celebratory banquet.
Together, they were unbeatable. There was no enemy fearsome enough, no army large enough to take them down when they combined their strength.
Their downfall could only come from inside.
The humans and the yōkai were always bound by a precarious balance, begging to be shattered. It only took one spark, one death too many, to light the fire.
The Dog believed that humans were fundamentally good, and worth protecting against those that evil had irremediably tainted. The Cat believed that humans were the root of all problems, and that a peaceful coexistence was nothing but a pipe dream.
The Boar could not pick a side. He watched helplessly as his comrades grew further and further from each other, too set in their own ideals to see what they were losing.
Decades worth of memories. Of shared meals, shared laughter, shared smiles. Three similar trinkets, carved out of their own fangs. How odd for the Cat to be the most sentimental of them all – the Dog and the Boar had laughed, as they happily donned their friend's gift.
The Boar fled the bloodshed. He refused to let his memories be tainted by what had become of his comrades. He departed to the lands he had long left behind, to the mountain that had been the command center of his turf.
He was never to part from it again.
The years passed. Leaves grew anew on the trees, only to turn yellow, orange, red, lying a thick carpet across the lower slopes. Snow covered the mountains and melted away, turning lazy brooks into mighty rivers. The Boar listened to the wind, to the distant news its howls carried all the way to his mountain.
When he learnt of his old friends' untimely demise, he was not surprised. A single tear rolled down his cheek, before he brought his axe down the large log at his feet. Timber for the winter to come.
A simple life. Away from the rest of the world, away from the wars, the famines, the plagues. The Boar stopped listening to the wind's cries.
Until the old world came crashing into his old cabin, in the shape of a disheveled woman.
She was but skin and bones. Her face deformed from being bashed in, clothes torn over her bruised body. Tears had frozen over her mangled visage, her feet and hands turned blue from hypothermia.
The Boar ought to have chased her off. Had she not felt the demonic aura that surrounded his mountain, warding off any creature that bore even the slightest hint of ill intent?
The barrier only let the animals through. Only their hearts were pure enough to cross the sheer manifestation of the Boar's will.
As the Boar opened the door, and the woman collapsed into his arms, he was struck with a realization. This one's heart was not tainted. He had never seen such a pristine soul, gleaming with such force despite the abuse she must have endured.
The swelling of her face subdued with intense care. Her traits angelic, one eye gone blind from the repeated hits. Eyes that shared the same vibrant green as the young leaves of early spring.
The Boar's favorite color.
The weeks turned into months. The months turned into years. The woman's pursuers never came looking for her. The Boar's heart opened again, day after day, letting the radiance of the woman's soul seep into his old wounds. Cure aches that had festered for decades on end.
The Boar thought he couldn't be happier.
He was soon proven wrong.
The little one had his mother's eyes, and his father's ears. Every time he laid eyes upon that small form, allowed those minuscule fingers to wrap around his thumb, the Boar could feel his heart grow another size.
What a fleeting, fragile little life that was. There was nothing he wouldn't give in order to protect it from harm.
Dark clouds gathered above the mountain. They announced a storm unlike any other, one mighty enough to rip the trees apart and turn the rivers into devastating streams. The Boar led his family away from the cabin, into the deeper, higher caves, where they would be safe from the landslides and the floods.
Lightning parted the skies. The Boar felt the barrier, or rather, what remained of it, shatter all around him. For every wound that healed inside his heart, the barrier had grown weaker.
The Spider had not missed that chance. He knew all about the Boar, about his former comrades, about the past that the Boar had for so long tried to run away from. Like an old nightmare resurfacing, fate had caught up with him.
How ironic, for the Boar to finally take a side. A spit in the face of his dead comrades, was it not?
Rage festered inside the Boar's chest. The Spider needed nothing more to seep inside his soul, and seize a heart that had lost all its defenses.
When the Boar opened his eyes again, the scent of blood mixed with petrichor assaulted his senses. A terrible chill ran across his spine, from the warmth that coated his fingers to the rain that soaked his clothes. As his eyes fell to the ground, he felt the remnants of his soul shatter to pieces.
The woman lay sprawled across the ground, her arms outstretched towards the cliff upon which they stood. There was no light surrounding her. No pure glow, not even the smallest spark.
Her soul was gone.
The Boar collapsed to his knees. He brought her body to rest on its back, hands crossed above her chest. A final kiss placed on her forehead.
Before the Boar plunged his own claws into his chest.
The Spider would return to reap the rewards of his plot. As low as the mighty Boar might have fallen, the body of a Daiyōkai was always worth devouring.
The little one was washed away by the streams, until his wails caught the attention of a sorrowful boar mother. The sow brought the child over to her burrow, and nursed him to good health.
The Hanyō never worried about the past, neither did he think about the future. He survived day after day, discovering his own strength as he fought off the many demons that crawled over the mountain, looking for a master that had long departed these lands. The Hanyō's existence in itself was nothing but a rumor for the humans to fear.
Perhaps, someday, he would depart on a quest. Perhaps he would seek more power, better status, and a way to show the world just how strong he really was.
And perhaps, someday, he would figure out the meaning behind the odd little trinket that never left his wrist.
