To me, engulfment is so much worse than isolation.
If I become too isolated for too long, there is a noticeable degradation in my connection with reality. I've never experienced a full psychotic episode, but if I go weeks or months without so much as leaving my house, I can be triggered briefly into delusions. It's unpleasant, yes. It's not good to have the world disappear from my perception.
But with engulfment, I disappear, and that is so much worse.
With isolation, it's only my perception of the things around me that is altered. For everyone else, they remain identical. And despite any momentary distress I may face, it will still be the same once I come back down to Earth.
With engulfment, it's not only my perception of something. The thing itself, me, my personality, my existence, my soul -- it is consumed. It disappears. It is changed, altered, destroyed. The boundaries of my soul are blurred, ebbed, then eaten, like a spider liquefying its prey before sucking out its guts. I am crushed and smeared. I am swallowed, digested; I cease to exist.
And it's not momentary. And it's not subjective. I, me, the user of this terminal, genuinely and truly die when I am engulfed. Unlike in isolation, something in the world is factually changed, is taken. The sheer concreteness, physicality, reality of it is horrifying, to me.

What is ipseity?
ipseity (n.) - "personal identity, individuality, selfhood," 1650s, from Latin ipse "self" + -ity "quality of being"
I am proposing a category of identities called ipseities: labels that encompass the entire self, rather than solely referring to one's gender, age, species, or other subidentities, though subidentities can easily be directly extrapolated from ipseities by changing the suffix.
Maybe you identify as a certain xenogender, for example, but you feel that its concept makes up more of your identity than just gender. Perhaps this would be better classified as an ipseity.
Ipseic terms, flags, and symbols are designed to be fluid, inclusive, and free-use. Individual labels are generally given the suffix "-seity," though "-eity" or "-ity" can also be used.

Fic Rec Friday!
Series Title: Ipseity
Author: SkyisGray (@skyisgray)
Fandom: Marvel, MCU
Relationship: Stucky!
Locked on Ao3, so I can’t link here. Sorry! But if you’re a member, you can just search up the series name.
This is an absolutely extraordinary story. Bucky falls, is captured by Zola, and tortured. The trauma of which fractures his consciousness into a second personality. And then a third. And a fourth.
This story has changed the way I think of this character in canon forever. It’s completely immersive and utterly convincing. Bucky and his alters are so vividly distinguished and characterized. His journey through Hydra and Department X is harrowing, the promise of reconciliation with Steve is so hopeful, then so painful. And finally, his eventual acceptance of his own person (well, people) is one of my favorite sequences in this entire fandom—I literally re-read the last chapter every few months. This isn’t an easy story to read, but it’s fantastically done and its ending is absolutely worth the effort. Well worth the read for any Stucky fan.

Whats ipseity disturbance?
Hey there! It's also known as self-disturbance, and it refers to a unique way of relating to/not relating to your sense of self often observed in people on the schizo spectrum.
Most non-schizo people have a sense of self as the "unit" that experiences the world, it's like an immediate intuitive understanding (as it's described) that I can't relate to/understand and therefore I struggle to explain the "normal" way of being.
With self disturbance, I feel a fragmentation of self and I never just "am". I am observing my own thoughts trying to make sense of why I think that way to understand how "I" might feel, and I get lost in reflections about what it means to observe myself and then I start analysing the observer and so forth (for example). I listen in on my own conversations and try to understand why I'm saying the things I say and whether they relate to what I think, and what does it mean to "think something to begin with?". Who's doing the thinking and who's doing the observing? Who's pulling the strings to make me act like a semi-cohesive unit towards the world?
I get lost in these types of ruminations.
There's more to it than that, but that's the part that I was thinking of when I wrote that post about gender identity :)

i've occasionally talked about fan's dissociation from time to time, but something i've recently thought of is looking at his character from the perspective of someone with schizotypal personality disorder or schizotypy autism.
i would go farther to argue that fan experiences a level of ipseity disturbance/self disorder (which basically means that it's a lack of a sense of self and involves hyperreflexitiy, a weakened sense of self-presence, and a disruption/instability in one's perception of reality) ipseity disturbance is considered a part of the basis of psychotic states in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
people who experience self disordered thinking often feel like they don't really exist and can perceive themselves as external objects which makes sense with fan because he doesn't initially see himself as a contestant on the show and spends his time liveblogging instead. many people with ipseity disturbance don't feel like they have much of a presence in their own lives which is why fan is so intensely attached to this idea of being a fan of inanimate insanity. fan struggles much socially and frequently in season 2 talks about how he doesn't even feel like he has much of a role in the show. these self-perceived roles of him taking care of the baby shimmer and eventually contributing to the creation of bot are what makes his own presence feel significant to him.
a huge part of fan's character is that he doesn't feel like he has "enough to contribute" on his own standing because he is so fixed in this state of feeling detached from his own identity. it's funny being schizospec in that we have so much awareness on certain aspects of our perception of the outside world (fan's theory of the mountains being shimmer eggs being connected to melife) but lack social graces/skills (fan's general awkwardness, rudeness, selfishness, list every scene with him and paintbrush, lol)
#inanimate insanity#ii fan#text#i could talk about this all day because i love talking about schizophrenia related psychology#all your faves have ipseity disturbance

Hyperseity / n-seity (Hyperseic / n-seic)
An ipseity centered around higher dimensions. One may feel as though they belong in a higher dimension, that they originally came from a higher dimension, or that their sense of self is influenced by forces that reside in higher dimensions, among many other possibilities.
The flag's colors depict a wavelength of the visible light spectrum that fades into infrared (represented by transparency, black, or white) and connects to a hypersphere on the right.

In our ongoing "y'all continue to have the most useless and annoying discourse so let's talk about something else" post series we want to talk about some of our experiences as a schizophrenic collective:
All of us are effected by symptoms however they aren't the same ones and the content is different. smile has more delusions and is generally the only one, barring when its Ghost, with somatic hallucinations; Ezra and Wren have more thought issues and executive function problems; we all have auditory hallucinations but only Aisling and Wren regularly have visual ones, and a couple of the littles have religious delusions but no one else does
Our sense of identity has always been very fluid, this is understandable with dissociative disorders however how this interacts with being schizophrenic is complicated, and we can't really get into it all or it would be an entire post, but we've got a tag for 'ipsiety disturbance' and this is a good post on the concept
Communication is often very different for us, because we all have auditory hallucinations we often don't communicate via thoughts when someone is piloting and go with emotions/vibes' because they are more accurate.
On that note people seem way more preoccupied with if our headmates are hallucinations then we are. Theoretically possible sure, but like in terms of practical reality it doesn't actually change things. A not uncommon therapy for schizophrenia involves speaking with and creating positive relationships with your voices. Eveyone gets respect and a seat at the table and if they are shits then we deal with it, doesn't really matter whose from where
Experiencing hallucinations abd delusions themselves are traumatic so we have a very different experience re-healing from trauma; much of our trauma is and will always be here. Here's a full length post on it
Community spaces are actively so hostile to us so often. "they're just delusional/schizophrenic" is a common insult and way of dismissing anyone whose experiences aren't the commonly accepted narrative; "you're brain isn't capable of creating anything traumatic on its own/anything your brain creates has some kind of truth/meaning" whenever exo/psuedomemories comes up; just tons of casual ableism and ignorance which sucks
We invite any other systems/plurals/collectives who experience schizospectrum disorders or psychosis to add their own thoughts/experiences
