Flamingo Road

When Warner Bros. reunited the director and stars of MILDRED PIERCE (1945) for Michael Curtiz’s FLAMINGO ROAD (1949, TCM, YouTube), they created a masterful piece of sheer hokum. Of course, the same could be said about the earlier film, but at least Crawford was well cast in that one. It’s not that she’s bad as a carnival dancer stranded in a small Southern town where she falls for the deputy sheriff (Scott), thereby earning sheriff Sydney Greenstreet’s eternal enmity. Her line readings are expert, she knows how to use her body, and for once she keeps the nostril flaring and heavy breathing to a minimum. It’s just that the early scenes ring false. Even though she’s been working in the butt-end of show business, the character has a degree of innocence and naivete, and however well Crawford reads the lines, that late Crawford face — those insistent lips and eyebrows — plays against them. And though it’s a period thing, it’s rather grating to hear everybody referring to her as a “girl.” She’s a much better fit for the role when she marries political boss David Brian and gets some class and sophistication. It’s a pity the writers didn’t think to put a time lapse in. It would have made her transformation more believable. It also would have helped the plot. On Greenstreet’s orders, Scott dumps Crawford to marry a banker’s daughter so he can serve as a state senator. But within only a few months, Greenstreet is pushing him to the political machine as a gubernatorial candidate. Without his moustache, Scott does well as a weakling, and Greenstreet, despite a Southern accent that sounds more Bostonian, does a bang-up job as the corrupt boss. Crawford doesn’t stand a chance in their scenes together. Three great character types enliven the supporting cast, with Gertrude Michael as a waitress working with Crawford early on, Iris Adrian as her jail mate when Greenstreet frames her for prostitution and Gladys George, magnificent as ever, as the feisty roadhouse owner who’s the only person who can put Greenstreet in his place. Working with cinematographer Ted McCord, Curtiz uses a cluttered mise-en-scene, shadows and composition in depth to put the picture somewhere on the dividing line between Southern gothic and film noir.

This is a long one folks. I had so much fun with it, I hope y'all will too! I'm putting it under a read more because (and this is a warning) it is long. And all the art you'll see is mine (admittedly it's only four pieces but 🤷‍♂️)

Summary: A rather established band with pop rock aesthetic. Rams found them in ~8th grade and has been an avid fan since! Right now, she's listening to their latest album: Solitude.

This band exists in the magickal world and are better known there! Their Tuneless music doesn't include Phono magick which often makes the sound feel 'lacking.' When Rams discovered this, xe reexperienced all their music 'properly' and will admit that it's much better on Phono than not. It feels complete.

Summary: Still underground, Buried Alive is a new band trying to gain a little following. Rams only heard of them through a friend of his who was friends with the band members. They only have four albums so Rams is starting with their first: BROKEN BONES.

They have a very ballad/tragic style. Each of the listed is songs is 9+ minutes long. Rams isn't sure how they feel about it yet but it's... not bad. It grows on them with each re-listen. The cover is homemade. They're trying their best, okay?

Summary: This band has the oldest members of all the bands Rams has listened to. The duo is 76 and 81 years old and their still going strong. Rams started listening sometime around sophomore year of high school.

Latest Album: Coffee + Tea Songs In The Album: Filter Me Out, Divide My Mix, Stir It In, No More Cream, Pieces of Crystal, Hot Bitter Drink, Choke and Choke Headcannons:

They're an old queer band though they were only moderately known in the 50s and 60s. That changed with the AIDs epidemic which claimed four of the six members lives leaving only Immy and Mal. Post-death, Sickening Sugar released a single (the last one to feature all members voices) titled 'What Do Mean? There's Still Six of Us'. It quickly gained traction and catapoulted the now duo into the centre of the LGBT movement throughout the late 80s and 90s. Their still heavily involved in activist work even if their heyday is a shiny memory. Yes, they are named after BOLAS characters because I think BOLAS the show is sort of like what Honor Amoung Thieves is to D&D. I headcannon that in-universe the BOLAS show pulled from a nerd culture of RPG games and Sickening Sugar named themselves after their favorite characters in those collaborative RPG games. It actually caused licensing issues while BOLAS was first coming out because two major characters couldn't be licensed since this band already held those licenses. The BOLAS legal team, Immy, and Mal worked out an agreement so Immy and Mal get royalties from each item. It's pretty good money considering the show's popularity.

Summary: it's a very folk-rock song. Mainly blending religion with critical anti-capitalism themes. The members in mid-40s and are currently on a break-up tour. Rams is devasted about it, the band has been a major part of hir highschool career and none had seen the break-up coming!

Yes, there are two different songs named Worship in the same album. Fans call the second one 'Worship Again' to differentiate them. Rumors have it that they're breaking up over creative differences but Rams doesn't fully believe those rumors. Unlike other bands, they've have a rather flexible sound that should be able to accommodate the odd/diverging album here and there.

skill, diamond, leveling, and background for sigrun!

Skill: Do you prefer RP, combat, or something else? Is there a part of the game you consider yourself best at?

Oh I absolutely love both of them when they're at their most Dramatic. RP is of course wonderful for building relationships, progressing the story, developing your character, etc., but I think combat can do all of those things too!! Plus, I love being a rules lawyer, in a "TECHNICALLY, with this interpretation of the rules, I have proof that I should be allowed to this batshit thing, jeremy crawford said so, etc."

If there's one part of the game that I consider myself the best at, it's the venn diagram intersection of RP and combat which is: being the distraction. The havoc I can cause with access to the minor illusion cantrip and a familiar is unparalleled. Please let me cause more distractions im SO good at them PLEASE --

Diamond: Have you ever participated in a character resurrection (for your own character or someone at the table)? What happened?

Oh there's been many deaths across several campaigns, but my main table doesn't use the Resurrection Ritual rules (unfortunately. i love them and the Risk but other people don't and i'm okay with making my characters more survivable lol).

One very fun resurrection happened to Iris! She was trying to sneak into a house where the aasimar mafia was located, and unfortunately got stabbed so good she died Instantly. and then her NPC friend immediately FREAKED, dragged her outside, and we found out he was a divine soul sorcerer when he brought her back to life. It was SO good and now Iris has a very sexy I Died But Got Better scar

Leveling: What’s your ideal starting party level? What leveling system do you use? What level are your currently (or did you most recently) DMing for?

OBVIOUSLY we use Narrative Leveling, im NOT doing math to figure out EXP

Ideal starting level: anywhere between 3 and 5 for my generic answer, but obviously it Depends on what kind of campaign you're running and what you want the vibes to be at the beginning. The first games I ran all started at level 1, but then as my players got better with the rules and wanted to try out more complex builds I started them out higher. Currently I'm DMing two games, one where they're all at level 10 for a heist (xoxo) and another where I just let them all level up to 14 as we head into the Fight The Stars Endgame Zone

Background: Does your PC get up to anything that you don’t narrate often? Any background habits, activities, plots? Do you share these through other avenues (e.g. a group chat, table cross-talk, posting online)?

Sigrun does a lot of like, outdoor survival stuff that doesn't come up all that often! She does a lot of stargazing, as a way to connect with the memory of her father and the short amount of time she got to know him. She also does a lot of hunting, I think -- rations and food don't come up a lot in our games as we travel but I like to imagine Sigrun and her horse Daisy head off and come back with a deer or something when they're staying out in the woods. I fill people in on this kind of stuff with art or in writing short stories, instead of really narrating it out in RP during the game :)

Classes, Lessons & Other Tutorials

The Lucy character was one of the most inquisitve characters on television. A basic education did not prevent Lucy from furthering her education.  Here are some lessons learned by Lucy!

HIGH SCHOOL

“Lucy Gets Her Diploma” (1967) ~ When Lucy Carmichael finds out the bank has a new policy of only employing high school graduates, she must go back to school to get her diploma in order to keep her job. 

Lucy takes the usual classes - with a fair amount of physical comedy for extra credit. Her teachers include Dave Willock (Math), Donald Randolph (History), Olive Dunbar (Biology), and Barbara Babcock (English). The principal of Wilshire High School is played by George E. Carey. 

MATH

“Liz Goes To Night School” (1950) ~ Liz's arithmetic skills are so bad, George sends her to night school where she somehow winds up in a math contest.  

CHEMISTRY 

“Lucy and Viv Take Up Chemistry” (1963) ~ Viv regrets letting Lucy talk her into joining her for a night school chemistry class. Lucy gets carried away trying to invent a youth serum and develops a huge ego between explosions. The frustrated biology teacher is played by Lou Krugman. 

To teach her a lesson, Viv and the professor make her drink her own concoction. She’s horrified by the results of her youth formula.

AUTO MECHANICS

“The Not-So-Popular Mechanics” (1973) ~ Lucy Carter and Mary Jane take an adult school course in auto mechanics so they can change the oil on Harry’s vintage Rolls Royce. Their teacher is played by Robert Rockwell, who played biology teacher Mr. Boynton on “Our Miss Brooks” opposite Gale Gordon and Mary Jane Croft.

MUSIC

“Piano and Violin Lessons” (1949) ~ Liz takes up the piano to win a radio talent contest. To get even, George starts learning the violin. Who will win?

“The Benefit” (1952) ~ When Lucy wants to get into Ricky’s new act, she’s determined to improve her singing.  

Lucy Carmichael was given singing lessons by Dr. Gitterman (Hans Conried) in “Lucy’s Barbershop Quartet” (1963). She used those same techniques on Agnes Schmidlap (aka Ethel Merman) when “Lucy Teaches Ethel Merman to Sing” (1964). 

DANCE

“Lucy Helps Ken Berry (1968) ~ Ken Jones (Berry) teaches a course of tap and soft shoe for $25. Lucy signs up and recruits a dozen truck drivers to  participate - not your typical dance students. 

“Dance Lessons” (1950) ~ After a disastrous experience at a club dance, Liz and Iris send their husbands to Professor Crawford’s School of the Dance. Instead of being greeted by  a befuddled old Professor, they meet his daughter, a breathless sexpot who immediately agrees to be their instructress.

RUDOLPH: “I’ve seen those girls who teach at Arthur Murray’s.”

“Liz Teaches Samba” (1950) ~ George talks Liz into teaching Wally, the son of the bank’s newest director, how to dance the Samba, and Wally gets a crush on Liz. The radio show served as the basis for...

“The Young Fans” (1952) ~ Lucy gives private dance lessons to Arthur Morton (Richard Crenna) so he can better woo Peggy Dawson, but he turns out to be more attracted to Lucy.

“The Ballet” (1952) ~ Thinking Ricky’s new act requires ballet, Lucy attends a class led by Madame LeMonde (Mary Wickes). “Abbas!  Abbas!”

“The Adagio” (1952) ~ Fred teaches Lucy to do the Apache dance for Ricky’s new act. When Fred’s lessons prove unhelpful, Ethel suggests Jean Valjean Raymond (Shepard Menken), a Frenchman who is more interested in amour than apache. This episode was partly inspired by....

“The French Revue” (1953) ~ A trip to a French restaurant makes Lucy think she should take French lessons from the waiter Robert DuBois (Alberto Morin) so she can take part in Ricky’s new show. Lucy later taught herself French when preparing for her trip to Europe. 

DUBOIS: “In French, everything it is either masculine or feminine. You Americans don’t have that.”  LUCY: “You haven’t been in this country very long, have you?”

ENGLISH

“The English Tutor” (1952) ~ So that her baby will be surrounded by proper elocation, diction and grammar, Lucy recruits tutor Percy Livermore (Hans Conried) to teach them how to speak properly - for free. Naturally, he has ulterior motives.

LIVERMORE (to Ricky): In lieu of the remuneration for my tutelage, I am to be permitted to introduce my talents into your nocturnal bistro.

ART

“Lucy Goes To Art Class” (1964) ~ To impress handsome bachelor John Brooks (Robert Alda) Lucy and Viv join him at an art class. The art teacher is played by John Carridine. 

BROOKS: “I do believe that all of us have some sort of creativity bottled up inside of us.” LUCY: “I think this class might be just the thing to pop my cork!”

“Lucy and Uncle Harry’s Pot” (1973) ~ When Lucy breaks a vase which has great sentimental value to Harry, she goes to a ceramics class to make him a new one – with dubious results!  Her teacher is played by Roger Twedt, an actual high school art teacher from Palm Springs. 

ACTING

“Lucy Meets Mickey Rooney” (1966) ~ Mickey Rooney takes out a loan from Mr. Mooney's bank to open an acting school. Lucy and Mooney each wangle free acting lessons.

EQUESTRIANISM

“Horseback Riding” (1949) ~ George’s female co-chair for his horseback riding club’s upcoming breakfast ride has Liz so jealous that she’s determined to overcome her fear of horses and learn to ride herself.

COLLEGE 

Fictional Pottawatomie College in New Mexico is the setting of Too Many Girls (1939), the film in which Lucille Ball first met Desi Arnaz, although their characters never meet on screen. 

“Lucy’s College Reunion” (1963) ~ Lucy Carmichael (nee Taylor) goes back to her alumnus, Milroy College. 

“Lucy and the Professor” (1973) ~ Lucy hears her daughter is dating an older man, so she goes to Kim’s college to see for herself. Unfortunately, Lucy mistakes an elderly professor (Murray Matheson) for the younger one (John Davidson) that Kim is actually dating!

PROFESSOR KLEINDORF: ”Thanks Professor Dietrich. You’re really groovy.” PROFESSOR DIETRICH: (points to his frown lines) “These aren’t grooves. They’re wrinkles.”

At Desilu Studios, Lucy opened the Desilu Playhouse, recruiting promising young performers to practice their craft under her tutelage, much in the same way Lela Rogers taught her at RKO. Some of the more famous graduates were Robert Osborne, Carole Cook, and Majel Barrett. 

In the early 1980s Lucille Ball become Professor Ball, lecturing on comedy at UCLA.  

Grade school students listen to Lucie Arnaz talk during Lucy Lessons, educational modules built around episodes of “I Love Lucy.”
