New Dragon Age: The Veilguard Journal entry:
"Journal #9 Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe Co-Composers Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Composers Announcement"
Tumblr media
"Hey everyone! Today, we’re so happy to announce that two-time Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer and Grammy-winner Lorne Balfe have co-composed the Official Soundtrack (OST) for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the new single-player fantasy RPG experience coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, EA App, and Epic Games Store on October 31, 2024. The legendary composers have collaborated on dozens of projects throughout their careers and have worked closely with the development team at BioWare to create a score celebrating the world of Thedas and its heroes. Fans will be able to pre-order the Official Soundtrack album beginning October 18th on iTunes and Amazon Music, with the formal release to follow on November 1st via Lakeshore Records. Moreover, in celebration of the announcement, Dragon Age: The Veilguard Main Theme, has been released as the first single from the official soundtrack, and can be downloaded and streamed now on all major music services such as Spotify, iTunes, and more. “One of our goals with the music for Dragon Age: The Veilguard was to provide a strong anchor between the world of Thedas and the diverse characters that inhabit that world,” said Cody Behiel, Audio Director for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. “We wanted to ensure that throughout the game's story, whether at its most epic or its most intimate, players were able to feel their actions connect to the personal relationships they have been fostering. Working with Hans and Lorne took these ideas to greater emotional heights than we thought possible and I am so excited for players to experience it.” Oscar-winner Zimmer, one of the world’s most renowned composers, has won numerous awards and honors for his scores in such films as Dune, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception, and many more. With over 100 film scores to his credit, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the first video game soundtrack composed by Zimmer in nearly 10 years. Speaking about his work on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Hans Zimmer said, “Epic stories lend themselves to epic scores, and the narrative tapestry BioWare has woven in The Veilguard never left me wanting for inspiration, be it during the game’s moments of shining heroism or darkest emotional pitfalls. I’m proud to have shared the journey of creating the musical backdrop for the latest Dragon Age adventure with Lorne and the entire design team.” GRAMMY Award-winner Balfe has over 170 composer credits across movies, TV and games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed III, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Beyond: Two Souls, all of which received nominations for Best Original Music from the BAFTA Games Awards. “The world of Dragon Age is an unprecedented immersive experience, and never more so than in Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” said Lorne Balfe. “Crafting this score alongside Hans Zimmer has allowed us to bring an epic new majesty to the realm of Thedas, bringing these characters and their stories to the next level. I cannot wait for people to play this game.” Players can pre-order Dragon Age: The Veilguard now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. We still have a few more things to talk about before release, and we hope you enjoy our main theme in the meantime!             — The Dragon Age Team"

Why Sound Design is so Important in Games
Sound design is a key point in games, though it is often neglected in college games where we do a lot of work without speakers on. Having some good audio in a game really helps elevate the experience beyond just being a solely visual medium, as much as audio changed silent movies. The games with the best sound design are often those with realistic sound systems, or ones that elicit the desired emotional response. Good sound design can make you terrified to turn a corner; it can make you cry in the game's saddest moments; it can turn a level from a selection of rendered polygons to a truly real-seeming experience. Obviously our game's sound design isn't that deep, but it doesn't add nothing to the game either.
The first game I am looking at is Thief: The Dark Project. This game came out in 1998, but I would say it still holds up today with a few patches to make it run on modern systems. The game has a unique stealth system that lets you hide in shadows, but the main thing we're looking at is the sound. Different surfaces are different levels of loudness when walked on - carpet is perfect for sneaking, but metal catwalks are loud and clank under your feet. This isn't just set dressing either, because enemies are more likely to hear you if you're clanking about on steel grating. Then there is the ambient sound, where you can hear nearby guards muttering or whistling (in a great bit of game design, this helps you keep track of them when they're out of sight), torches crackle, and strange ambient screeches echo down hallways. The ambient soundtracks in each level are interesting, and use a lot of electronic synthesiser noises, which gives them an 80s John Carpenter vibe. They help make the environments foreboding, but also help tell the story in a way that 90s graphics simply could not. For example, as you enter the deepest annals of an ultra-religious Hammerite compound, the ambient whirr of machinery gets replaced by solemn choir and hymns. Caves can have dripping water and the occasional crumbling rock, while more twisted forest environments have the endless chirring of insects and chuckling from unseen nymphs and satyrs. The actual sound technology is also really good for the time, because it supports sound cards, even though they aren't used too much anymore. With them enabled, you can listen against a door and gauge how big a room is based on the echo of the guard's voices inside. Even for today that is fairly advanced, and as far as I know, not present in many other games.
youtube
The next game I am looking at is Hunt: Showdown. It is a 2018 horror shooter taking place at the end of the 19th century, where you play as a bounty hunter trying to kill various cryptids and monsters. The game uses the Cry Engine, so it already looks good on a visual front, but the audio is also phenomenal. Most of the quality comes from its directional sound system, which is so specific you can tell where players are through buildings, which is useful for lining up shots when you don't have a good visual read on their whereabouts. Every gun also has a unique sound and echo, which allows an educated player to guess what weapon has been fired, from what direction, and even from what distance. The way that the game calculates sound waves travelling is a very unique and realistic system; a gunshot ringing out over an open field will be louder and clearer than a gunshot fired in the middle of the thick backwoods. I assume this is a built-in feature for CryEngine V because I know of no other games with this level of realism when it comes to sound - I can only assume it calculates for windspeed and other factors and then runs the sound effect through various in-engine filters.
youtube
Finally, I will look at The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. One of the lesser-mentioned qualities of this game is its environmental sound design, which help the various holds of Skyrim seem like realistic places. The wind whistles about your ears, giving you a good sense of your player's altitude and the temperature around you. In the mornings and evenings, you can hear crickets chirring and birds chirping. The rushing of rivers sounds different depending on the course - swelling into a roar of white noise in the rapids, but dissipating to a trickle when the river becomes a lazy stream. Then there are more ethereal sounds, like the creaking of the aurora borealis on winter nights. Towns have their own soundscapes also, with the creaking wood of huts and the crackle of flaming torches. The ambient music by Jeremy Soule (the same guy behind the LOTR soundtrack) also adds a lot to the game's atmosphere, with majestic orchestras making even a simple walk through the valleys a much more emotive and captivating experience. However, you can play with the sound turned off and just listen to the layered soundscapes.
youtube
From my research, I can see that the main theme that makes a soundscape good is attention to detail. Not just having one sword hit sound, for example, but several, altered depending what material you strike, and echoing with a different resonance depending on where you are. I would say that with Wallpaper of the Mind, we have achieved this as best we can in four weeks, with the different footstep surfaces. The sounds I myself provided were more stock quality, but it doesn't matter, because how sound is used mechanically is just as important. I will make a blog post on this soon.

i think its just going to be part of my blog that every handful of months im gonna talk about the kings field games. it cant be escaped.
its hard to put my finger on exactly why i adore it so much when its absolutely a very old-fashioned series in terms of design direction, graphics, everything, but i think thats part of what gives it not only charm but also a lot of uniqueness. in a lot of ways its a very *classic* sort of dungeon crawler, featuring labyrinths that look mostly similar with small quirks and details that give you just enough information to slowly learn how to recognize where you are. it's also got pre-standardized rpg design, which is certainly barebones but keeps me engaged in how it spaces out certain weapons and armors - there's a feeling of play to it, to when you gain access to an element, the different types of spells, it all feels very experimental because genre standards hadn't been set in stone yet.
in a lot of ways its just emblematic of why i love playing older games in general - modern games (even when they tread new ground) have precedent for their core flow, and there are strongly writ genre standards for how one goes about design. we seldom see tank controls now, minimaps exist and are meant to be useful, its unheard of for a game to let you sell key items, and so theres a lot of unique traits in older games that let you watch creators explore their own vision of what their game could be, rather than what it "should" be, and i think in a lot of fashions that's exciting and feels honest.
sometimes it results in jank or in shitty sections, and this certainly happens at times in the kf games (the 1994 game's last two levels are a slog i'll admit), but the way progression is uniquely laid out and the experimental, puzzle-box construction of the game that includes its weapons, that includes its consumable items, going right down to the moonlight sword's beams being a secret that you stumble upon, creates a really unique and deliberate experience that i think is really honest to what a player's experience is meant to be like. it feels creative, and experimental, and novel in numerous ways, and i don't think its a game that could get produced in that way today

PS2 Review: Katamari Damacy Rolling Rolling Rolling Rolling Star
In an ocean of classic and well remembered titles like the PS2’s library sometimes it’s hard to pick out specific examples of what made the console stand out. Other times it jumps right to the front of your mind almost immediately. This is one of those times, because when I think “best games on the PS2” I never fail to think of one game series: The Katamari games. Now today I’m only going to be talking about the very first title, Katamari Damacy, but nonetheless would like to drive home just how incredible this title is both as the first game in its series and as one of the most cosmically fun PS2 titles in the entire library.
Tumblr media
Visuals
Where do I even begin? Katamari Damacy boasts one of the most endearing art styles to date. With a gorgeously wacky intro video featuring a bizarre cast of characters and scenes to its endlessly charming low-poly models and bright popping colors. It’s an understatement to say that the game’s visuals were built to last. Objects and environments in the game are mostly based on modern (at the time) everyday objects and locals from Japan. Some interesting trivia on the timeless art style is that it was created due to the maker of Katamari, one Keita Takahashi, was suggested by his former boss, Mitsutoshi Ozaki, to approach a senior class of the Konami Computer Entertainment School who at the time was being trained on 3D modeling for possible game prototypes with other Namco employees. Takahashi approached the class about creating the multitude of 3D objects and models needed to populate the wonderful world within the game, ultimately resulting in the charming art style we’ve come to appreciate the series for. I really can’t understate just how well the visuals have held up for how simplistic they are. Without much else to say, they’re a staple of the series for a very good reason.
Tumblr media
Level design
What could easily be considered the real meat of the Katamari experience is its delightfully designed levels. From a cluttered living room to a scaled down version of the entire world, there’s no shortage of fun to be had within the level design itself. Levels range from smaller scale and cluttered for the smaller rolling goals, to large open spaces that may even have their objects replaced via a loading screen halfway through. Levels are well made with large stretches packed with clutter (and often people/animals) and small vertical climbs/ramps for some more puzzling rolls. The game’s very first proper stage, Make a star 1, takes place inside that cramped living room I mentioned later. However, the size of the room is no object when it comes to just how packed it can get with objects to add to your ever growing rolling cluster.
Between being able to roll on, over, and under the kotatsu in the center of the room, the floor is positively littered with tiny objects such as coins, buttons, and batteries, and taller places like the couch and cupboards to roll across, the room has does a stellar job of being an introduction to the addictive gameplay loop of rolling. On top of this tight level design are the special levels, the constellations, which range from freeform fun to sometimes maddening precision. These stages are centered around collecting particular things to make specific constellations. Take Signus for example. That stage has you rolling up swan eggs in the backyard map, however, the eggs look exactly the same as every other type of egg in the stage. This includes chickens, crabs, fake plastic eggs, and some others that might trip you up, encouraging the player to make a mad dash to collect as many eggs as possible to maximize the number of swans you collect.
On the opposite end of the scale are the infamous cow and bear stages, taurus and ursa major respectively. But what’s so different? These stages are designed to test your rolling skills on an entirely different level. The goal of these two stages is to roll up only the single largest cow or bear. That being said, the maps these take place in are not only littered with clutter to improve the size of your Katamari, but also with cows and bears of far inferior size to what you’d need to get a good score. Meaning if you want to do well you have to bring your absolute best. Rolling into a single cow/bear item will end the stage instantly and stick you with whatever score that item would give you, unless you retry of course. It’s this fine tuning and pure focus on fun that makes the level design so freeing in a game that already feels fast and loose in the best way possible.
Tumblr media
Gameplay
Here’s where the game can sometimes show some of its rougher edges. While most of the game is very smooth sailing, rolling around collecting to your heart’s content, it’s during these sessions of rolling action that you can sometimes get tripped up. The game’s control scheme, for example, is sometimes considered a bit clunky by modern standards. While I personally enjoy the feeling it provides of rolling your Katamari around just like the little prince you play as, it’s definitely unorthodox. To move you press both thumbsticks on the DualShock together in tandem as if they were your hands. This doesn’t seem too complicated until you need to alternate them to turn, or shake them back and forth for a boost. It’s not terrible, but can certainly feel like it results in some unpleasant navigation around areas that aren’t just straightaways.
Along with this are some of the game’s traversal mechanics themselves. In particular, climbing has never worked well for me. You’re supposed to be able to gently run your Katamari into shorter walls and sloped surfaces and have it magically stick and roll its way up. Useful, right? It would be if the game’s collision system didn’t register some objects hitting the walls as a full speed slam, making the object fly off with other smaller ones and your Katamari go spiraling away from the wall.
At worst it’s frustrating, but at best it’s a relatively smooth experience that sends you rolling and climbing over everything in your path to collect as much as physically possible. Everything else I could say about the core gameplay is to put it simply, unabashedly fun. With such a simple loop of roll, collect, repeat, it’s very hard to mess up. Even with the aforementioned hiccups the game provides such a solidly simple foundation that they come more as unpleasant bumps in an otherwise flawless road.
Tumblr media
Story
The shortest part of this review by far. Katamari’s story was never its focus. The game was made more to put emphasis on the joy and fun of playing it rather than any sort of gripping narrative. But as the simplistic story goes, your character (The prince of all cosmos) is the son of the strange and rather pompous King of all cosmos. Some time ago the king went on a bit of a bender where he destroyed all the stars in the sky for fun. Brushing right past how horrifying that has the potential to be, you’ve now been tasked with collecting items from Earth with your Katamari to throw up into the sky and replace the lost stars. Meanwhile on Earth, the Hoshino family follows a loose narrative of going to see the father of the family, an astronaut, blast off before the launch is canceled due to the sudden lack of stars. There’s not much else to the tale, unfortunately. You as the prince make your way through the game and replace all the stars, and celebrations ensue. Like I said before, it’s simple, serviceable, and an overall perfectly harmless narrative in a game that really didn’t need one.
Tumblr media
Soundtrack
One cannot simply make a review of Katamari Damacy without dedicating an entire segment to the absolutely stupendous soundtrack. Wildly praised for being inventive and imaginative within the genre of video game OSTs, it’s stood the test of time better than just about anything else from the game. Most of its tracks were composed by the now legendary Yuu Miyake better known at the time for his work on the Tekken and Ridge Racer series, as well as featuring vocal performances from then-popular J-Pop stars such as Yui Asaka and prominent anime voice actors including Nobue Matsubara and Ado Mizumori. One track was even composed by Charlie Kosei of Lupin III fame. Much like the visual portion of this review it really cannot be understated just how stellar the soundtrack is. The game’s official theme, Katamari on the Rocks, reverberates from the very start with bombastic horns and chorus lines to punctuate the fantastically overstimulating opening. The game’s unofficial theme however, Lonely Rolling Star written by Yoshihito Yano, composed by Yuu Miyake, with vocals by Saki Kabata, has gone on to be one of if not the most popular pieces of music from the score. And for a very, very good reason. With a mix of electronic “video-gamey” sounding tracks and jazz ranging from smooth to wild, the music of Katamari Damacy stands as a testament to its place as a work of art among the best of the best on the PS2. The soundtrack would go on to win both IGN and Gamespot’s “Best soundtrack of 2004” award. It also saw a release as a standalone album sparking a trend that would follow well into its sequels. It’s incredibly plain to see just how passionate and vibrant the compositions are in tandem with the game’s endless charm.
youtube
Lonely Rolling Star from the Katamari Damacy soundtrack. Largely considered one of the game’s best tracks.
Conclusion and comments
Katamari Damacy isn’t a cult classic, and it certainly isn’t an underrated gem. It’s seen praise for years and years, spawning several sequel games and a full remaster/rerelease on all platforms in 2018 as Katamari Damacy Reroll. What Katamari Damacy is, is a work of art. An epitome of what video games should all strive to be at their core, fun. Endlessly charming, nearly infinitely replayable, and only topped by it’s the very next game in its long lineage of delightfully weird fun. But that’s a story for another time. This game stands tall among the other giants of the PS2’s already fantastic library and is a surefire addition to any collection looking for the best and brightest on the system.

Why Are Social Games Are More Than Just Playing: The Community Impact
Hello again! :D I hope everyone is doing well <3
Online gaming communities play a vital role in the digital age, transforming gaming from an individual pastime into a shared social activity. With improved technology and widespread internet access, players can interact, connect, and work together with like-minded gamers. This evolution has reshaped social interactions and strengthened connections within the gaming world.
What is Social Gaming? 👩🏻‍💻
A brief explanation of what social gaming is :)
Social gaming refers to online games that are designed to be played with or against other people, often through social networks, online communities, or mobile apps. Unlike traditional single-player games, social games encourage interaction among players, promoting social connections, collaboration, and competition. These games are typically more casual and accessible, allowing people of various skill levels to participate and enjoy the experience together.
Tumblr media
It is also important to note that social media has played a pivotal role in shaping social gaming in recent years, transforming gaming into a more community-centered and interactive experience.
Gamers have various reasons for playing. A 2023 report from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) highlights that some of the main motivations include having fun, passing the time, and relieving stress. Regardless of their reasons, many gamers are able to experience the benefits of gaming.
The Cultural Impact of Gaming 🕹️
Gaming has evolved significantly from its beginnings and has had a major influence on our culture. It’s no longer just a pastime; it’s become a way of life, shaping music, fashion, and even communication. Gaming has developed its own unique language, complete with specific terms and slang.
One of the greatest cultural impacts of gaming is its ability to unite people. It has enabled individuals from around the world to connect and interact, creating a space for communities to form and share experiences. Online gaming allows players to meet and play with others from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and countries, breaking down barriers and fostering understanding between people who may never have crossed paths otherwise.
Tumblr media

Gaming has also influenced the entertainment industry, becoming a major source of entertainment that competes with movies and TV shows in both popularity and revenue. The gaming industry is now worth billions, with titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 each earning over a billion dollars in sales. Additionally, gaming has grown into a popular spectator sport, with esports tournaments drawing millions of viewers globally.
One of the most profound effects gaming has had on our culture is its ability to spark creativity and innovation. It has nurtured some of the world’s most inventive minds, with many game developers later becoming entrepreneurs and founding companies that have transformed industries. Gaming has also driven the development of new technologies and inventions, such as virtual reality headsets and motion-sensing controllers.
During the COVID-19 Pandemic 😷
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, social interaction was restricted by government mandates and business closures, including schools, workplaces, restaurants, and gyms. The stay-at-home orders that followed significantly reduced opportunities for in-person interactions.
The restriction on in-person interactions had significant societal effects. Social interaction and support are crucial for positive emotional well-being, while isolation and loneliness can negatively impact mental health.
During the period of social distancing, online social gaming became a safe and accessible source of entertainment and interaction.
The Positive Impacts of Social Media on Community-Building in Gaming 💆🏻‍♀️
Social media has brought significant improvements to the gaming industry, offering players a platform to connect and form communities. Social media allows players to share their gaming experiences and connect with others worldwide, fostering a sense of inclusivity and belonging within the gaming community.
Furthermore, social media offers game developers a direct way to engage with their audience, making it evident that it plays a crucial role in the growth and success of the gaming industry.
Building Connections! 🌏
Online gaming communities bring people together through shared interests, often focusing on specific games or genres like first-person shooters, role-playing games, or strategy games. Connecting with others who share a passion for the same games can be highly rewarding, providing opportunities to exchange strategies, share tips, and build friendships with those who understand their enthusiasm.
Furthermore, online gaming communities have broken geographic barriers, uniting people from various cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. This creates a diverse and global gaming environment, offering players new perspectives and promoting inclusivity and understanding.
Teamwork! 💪🏼
In many online games, teamwork and collaboration are key to success in many online games, requiring players to join forces to complete quests, achieve objectives, or overcome opponents. This focus on cooperation fosters social interaction and helps players develop interpersonal skills, as they must communicate, coordinate strategies, and support one another to reach their goals.
Collaborative gameplay helps players develop important skills like leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication. These abilities can be applied to real-life situations, enhancing social interactions beyond gaming.
Emotional Support 🫂
Online gaming communities offer a sense of belonging and support to individuals who may feel isolated or overlooked in other parts of their lives. These spaces allow gamers to connect with others who share their interests and provide emotional encouragement, which can be especially helpful for those dealing with social anxiety or challenges in forming connections in traditional social settings.
Gaming communities provide a space for forming lasting friendships and meaningful connections. Many include forums, chat rooms, and social media groups where members can discuss not only gaming but also personal topics. These platforms often become places for sharing experiences, seeking advice, or enjoying casual conversations.
Challenges ⚔️
Despite the benefits of online gaming communities, they also come with challenges, particularly the risk of toxic behavior and online harassment. The anonymity provided by online platforms can lead some individuals to act abusively towards others, negatively affecting the gaming experience and deterring people from engaging in these communities.
To combat this problem, many gaming platforms have introduced strict rules to encourage respectful behavior and penalize offenders. Players are also urged to report harassment or abuse, while community moderators are essential in ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
Tumblr media
Gaming, once a solitary activity, has become a global phenomenon due to social media. These changes have transformed both the gaming experience and the structure of gaming communities.
Social media has become essential for gamers and developers, connecting people, building communities, and introducing new dynamics in gaming.
To conclude this blog 🔏
Online gaming communities have had a profound impact on social interaction, revolutionizing the way people connect and engage with each other. These communities provide a space for gamers to build connections based on shared interests, collaborate and work together towards common goals, and seek emotional support from like-minded individuals. They have created opportunities for individuals to connect and form friendships across geographic boundaries and have fostered a sense of inclusivity and understanding.
With the existence of social media, it has greatly influenced gaming communities by connecting players, building communities, and enhancing the experience. While challenges exist, the benefits are clear, and it continues to shape the future of gaming in exciting ways. The Evolution of Video Games
Introduction
The evolution of video games is a journey that spans over five decades, moving from simple pixelated games in early arcades to today’s immersive virtual reality experiences. It’s incredible to see how video games have transformed our interaction with technology and each other. Let’s take a personal look at some key milestones in the evolution of video games, and how they've changed in terms of technology, design, and culture.
The Early Days: 1950s-1970s
The Pioneers
Back in the 1950s and 60s, video games were more experimental than anything else. "Tennis for Two" (1958) and "Spacewar!" (1962) are often hailed as some of the first real video games. These weren't just games; they were glimpses into a future where humans could interact with computers in entirely new ways.
The Arcade Era
The 1970s brought us the arcade era, and with it, games like "Pong" (1972). These simple, addictive games started a cultural phenomenon and laid the groundwork for a burgeoning industry. Arcades became the social hubs for a generation, and video games began their journey into mainstream entertainment.
The Golden Age: 1980s
Home Consoles
The late 70s and early 80s marked the beginning of home consoles with the Atari 2600. This was a game-changer—literally. Suddenly, you could bring the arcade experience home. And then came the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), bringing legendary games like "Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda" into our living rooms.
Classic Arcade Games
The 80s also saw the rise of classic arcade games that remain iconic today. Who doesn't remember the thrill of "Pac-Man" (1980) or the challenge of "Donkey Kong" (1981)? These games weren't just fun; they were cultural milestones that defined a generation.
Technological Evolution: 1990s
3D Graphics
The 90s were all about technological advancements, particularly in graphics. Games like "Doom" (1993) and "Quake" (1996) introduced us to 3D environments, while consoles like the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 made these experiences widely accessible. The jump from 2D to 3D was a revolution, making games more immersive than ever before.
Diversified Genres
This decade also saw the explosion of different game genres. Whether you were into the epic narratives of "Final Fantasy VII" (1997) or the strategic depth of "StarCraft" (1998), there was something for everyone. The diversity in game types really started to shine.
The Modern Era: 2000s-Present
Online Gaming
The internet changed everything. Games like "World of Warcraft" (2004) and "Counter-Strike" (1999) introduced online multiplayer, creating global gaming communities. Suddenly, you could play with or against anyone, anywhere, anytime. This connectivity brought gamers together in ways that were previously unimaginable.
Realism and Virtual Reality
In recent years, the focus has shifted towards realism and virtual reality. Games like "The Last of Us Part II" (2020) push the boundaries of graphical fidelity and storytelling, while VR devices like the Oculus Rift offer entirely new ways to experience games. The level of immersion we have now is something I could only dream of as a kid.
Video Game Culture
E-Sports and Streaming
Video games are more than just a pastime—they're a cultural phenomenon. E-sports have turned gaming into a spectator sport, and platforms like Twitch allow players to share their experiences with a global audience. It's amazing to see how games have become a central part of our culture.
Inclusivity and Complex Narratives
Modern games are also tackling complex themes and promoting inclusivity. Titles like "The Last of Us" and "Life is Strange" are not just games; they're powerful stories that reflect diverse perspectives and experiences. It’s refreshing to see video games growing up and addressing real-world issues.
Conclusion
The evolution of video games is a testament to the rapid advancement of technology and human creativity. From the simple joys of arcade classics to the rich, complex worlds of today, video games have come a long way. And with each new development, they continue to promise a future filled with innovation and endless entertainment.

Unearthing the Legend: The Development Story of Shovel Knight ⚔️🛡️
Hey fellow gamers and Shovel Knight enthusiasts! Today, I want to take you on a nostalgic journey back to the inception of one of the most beloved indie games of all time: Shovel Knight. Join me as we dig deep into the development process and uncover the remarkable story behind this modern-day retro masterpiece! It all began in 2013 when Yacht Club Games, a small independent game development studio, launched a Kickstarter campaign with the ambitious goal of creating a game that would capture the spirit of classic 8-bit platformers. Inspired by iconic titles like Mega Man, Castlevania, and DuckTales, the team set out to create a love letter to the golden age of gaming. The Kickstarter campaign was a resounding success, surpassing its initial funding goal within days. This outpouring of support not only provided the necessary funds for development but also ignited a passionate community eagerly awaiting the arrival of Shovel Knight. Yacht Club Games meticulously crafted every aspect of Shovel Knight, pouring their hearts and souls into the project. The game's protagonist, the titular Shovel Knight, was envisioned as a courageous knight armed with a trusty shovel, embarking on a quest to rescue his beloved Shield Knight from the clutches of the Enchantress and her Order of No Quarter. The team's attention to detail extended to the game's visuals, which were deliberately designed to emulate the limitations and charm of the 8-bit era. The pixel art style, vibrant colors, and catchy chiptune soundtrack by Jake Kaufman all contributed to the game's nostalgic appeal, transporting players back to a bygone era of gaming. One of the most remarkable aspects of Shovel Knight's development was the team's commitment to quality. Originally planned as a single-player experience, Yacht Club Games decided to delay the game's release to add a full-fledged multiplayer mode called Shovel Knight: Battle Mode. This unexpected addition showcased the studio's dedication to delivering an unforgettable gaming experience. As development progressed, the team encountered numerous challenges and obstacles. However, they persevered, fine-tuning the gameplay mechanics, level design, and boss battles to ensure a satisfying and challenging experience for players. The attention to detail and the passion poured into every aspect of the game is evident in the final product. Shovel Knight was released in June 2014 to critical acclaim, garnering praise for its tight controls, clever level design, and nostalgic charm. The game's success led to multiple expansions and spin-offs, including Plague of Shadows, Specter of Torment, and King of Cards, each offering unique perspectives and gameplay styles. Beyond its initial success, Shovel Knight has become a symbol of the indie gaming renaissance. Its triumph on Kickstarter and subsequent impact on the gaming industry have inspired countless developers to pursue their creative visions independently. The game's legacy extends far beyond its nostalgic appeal, serving as a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the unwavering belief in one's vision. So, fellow adventurers, let's raise our shovels high in celebration of Shovel Knight and the incredible journey that brought this modern-day classic to life. It serves as a shining example of how indie games can capture the hearts of players worldwide, reminding us that even in a world of high-budget blockbusters, the spirit of old-school gaming can still reign supreme. Keep digging, keep exploring, and keep embracing the magic of Shovel Knight! ✨🛡️💪

RaR Musings #13: I Don't Hate DND
Considering how much slander I sling at Dungeons and Dragons, a lot of people conclude that I must hate the game, 5e especially. The issue is, I LOVE Dungeons and Dragons; I love what it can do, but I also love things that it can't do, and that prevents me from devoting myself to the single product like so many people seem to do.
Getting to talk to people who played Baldur's Gate 3 and nerd out about different elements of the lore has been fun. Talking about getting teleported to Chult and ambushed by dinosaurs brings up the Tomb of Annihilation campaign module, and reading it inspires and gets me excited over the idea of a journey through an oppressive jungle, fighting undead and snakes and dinosaurs, with side quests and magic items that seem really cool and exciting to experience.
However, not only does DND have any real core rules for wilderness survival (goodberry renders foraging null, not that there's much to that mechanically in the first place, and Rangers and the Outlander background are basically bandaids that help you skip the wilderness altogether), but getting to actually PLAY would mean having to find a group, with a DM, who are willing to host, and host this campaign specifically, gleefully experiencing permadeath, for up to 11 player levels, in a campaign that'd likely take months or even years of sporadic and short meetups.
The alternative is that I have to be the one to be the DM, which means I don't actually get to experience any of the struggles that I WANT to experience, and my struggles are defined by how to give the other players the best experience instead.
It gets really frustrating that DND is how it is, because what I'm looking to have happen has so many social and mechanical barriers in place that it can sometimes be next to impossible in today's modern ttrpg landscape.
_________
It's all part of why I designed Road and Ruin with the parameters that I did. Not requiring a single dungeon master, sessions that both begin and end satisfactorily, puzzles that have generative answers rather than having the DM hold all the cards. I COULD convert Tomb of Annihilation, but that would require converting the puzzle answers into generative ones, and spoiling various plot points for myself along the way of building a sort of 'choose your own adventure' with predetermined options for situation outcome.
Road and Ruin doesn't magically transform you into a professional writer or game designer, but it does it's best to try to bridge the gaps in experience and help carry the game if any one player (like the DM) is too tired or fried to. It doesn't replace well-written campaigns, like Tomb of Annihilation, but it does help make sure that people who want a Tomb of Annihilation actually get one if they want one.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterpiece?
youtube
Red Dead Redemption stands at one of the best and loved games of all-time, Developed by Rockstar Games, this American old-western open world took the world by storm in it's release in 2018. it gives another look to people to the open world, inviting them to take a ride into a journey with heart racing moments, breathtaking views and narrative that gets traditional gaming experience to a whole new level. I will be explaining the points of Red Dead Redemption 2 like gameplay mechanics, storyline and amazing biomes.
Immense Open World
Tumblr media
The open world of Red Dead 2 is nothing but a masterpiece, going to several regions, every area has an unique detail being designed. it shows forests, mountains with snow, deserts and the city of Saint Denis - every place brims with life, having a unique flora and fauna to the biome and habitats.
2. Unforgettable characters
Tumblr media
In Red Dead 2 what most attract about this game is the characters, that after playing the game they stay in the player's heart's forever. the main character Arthur Morgan, is the anchor of the masterpiece that is today. by playing him every minute of the game he grows as a person and inner self, able to makes choices on his own.
The Van der Linde gang, led by Dutch Van der Linde, has his family of outlaws who little by little got bigger. he got his wise friend Hosea Matthews, and the loyal and endearing Lenny Summers, each member has his own personality and backstory. among those characters there's John Marston, whose we see him transforming to the protagonist of the first Red Dead Redemption.
3. An enthralling narrative
Red Dead 2's narrative is epic, emotional and complex. the first moments of the game players find themselves engulfed in a thrilling tale that navigates themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the pursuit of redemption. The story has character-driven arcs and themes that resonate deeply with the players.
As Arthur Morgan, you go from place to place with the Van der Linde gang, (in Dutch's perspective)he's in search of a place that they can be free without being chased or with a needle on their throats. The Wild west is changing, believing that their only way for now is marching to modernization, seeing that the gang find it hard to adapt every time they move.
4. Visual and spectacular details
Tumblr media
Red Dead 2 has a beautiful and spectacular game graphics and auditory that it's a feast to our eyes and senses. the attention to the details extend the game graphics, which are breathtaking.
The game's soundtracks are inspiring. From orchestras compositions to acoustic melodies, the soundtrack gives emotional impact of the key moments in the game. Whenever it's peaceful moments, hauntingly melodies or adrenaline high-action sequences, the music is a feast to the player in the game atmosphere.
5. Players decisions and consequences
Tumblr media
In Red Dead 2 the game makes you take decisions in main story, even in side missions that impact the story. The Honor tracks the players action and determines Arthur morale like acts of kindness or selflessness that will lead to high honor, while doing violent and malicious acts lead to low honor. The honor system on how you have it high or low will depend on your ending in the story.
Thanks for stopping by and read my article if you have any questions comment and they will be answered!

This is actually a good time to give you guys a little piece of advice that may be necessary for younger gamers out there. Let me tell you a story about a gaming experience I had very recently about The Final Fantasy Legend/SaGa 1.
Tumblr media
SaGa is a spin-off JRPG series that started on the Gameboy with mechanics inspired by Final Fantasy II. Final Fantasy II is infamous for having a hilariously bad Oblivion styled level up system where your stats were based off use. So your health would only go up by taking damage, your attack stat would only go up by using your basic attack and specific spells would only increase in potency with constant use.
SaGa is meant to be a refinement of those systems with games in the series releasing even today and about a year or two ago SquareEnix released the trilogy of original Gameboy games on modern consoles, which I am playing as my introduction to the series right now (btw, mobile phones are actually a fantastic place to play classic RPGs like this. Pick this or the original Dragon Quest games up on mobile if you're interested)
To say the first game drops you in with no guideline is an understatement.
Tumblr media
This is the first screen you are greeted with after the short intro cutscene, which throws you into the game's class system with no explanation of what it is and that you're really only looking at 3 different classes with three unique level up systems. The first thing you're expected to do after being dropped in is to go to the guild and fill out the other 3 slots in your party with other choices.
It's explained at no point in the game and do you know why? Well I decided to check online for a scan of the manual and...
Tumblr media
It's because the original game came with an EIGHTY PAGE INSTRUCTION MANUAL.
Detailed explanations for the difference between the game's 3 races.
Tumblr media
Recommended and unrecommended party compositions
Tumblr media
Details about weapon types and the detail that some weapons scale with your agility rather than your strength (this, the book actually kinda gets wrong since some melee weapons do scale with your agility too).
Tumblr media
The only place where you can get an explanation for what the items do and last but not least filling out the last half of the manual,
Tumblr media
A story driven walkthrough of the first part of the game.
All this to say this book is not provided in the Saga collection SquareEnix released despite the fact that it is incredibly obvious the game was designed with the assumption that every player would have it. Being able to guide the player to a game's mechanics through an instruction manual eased the load on programmers and designers and let them put more complex mechanics into their games without having to feel the need to EXPLAIN said mechanics within the game itself. And while this isn't a common practice anymore and was disastrous even at the time for anyone who dipped into the re-sell market it also has to be something that's considered for the future preservation of games. The original Legend of Zelda game has a reputation of being esoteric and hard to get through because it doesn't provide information but THAT game had a full world map in it's manual. The manual was so integral to the full experience of the game Nintendo officially provides support for it's PDF themselves with an HD upload of it's art assets.
Tumblr media
So if you're dipping back into an older game, especially one from the 90s and it seems like a lot of details about it goes unexplained, check for the manual. It may be more integral to the experience than you had assumed.
not to sound like a boomer but I miss when video games included manuals with maps and some small trivia about the characters

How VFX Transforms Movies, Games, and Music Videos in 2025
Tumblr media
Visual effects (VFX) are no longer just an enhancement—they’re a creative necessity. From blockbuster films and AAA games to indie music videos, VFX brings imagination to life, shaping how we experience stories across screens. The beauty of VFX lies in its ability to transport viewers into new realms, amplify emotions, and blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy.
Today’s audiences demand more immersive, dynamic visuals, and VFX artists are delivering just that—armed with cutting-edge tools like real-time rendering, AI, and virtual production. Let's explore how VFX is transforming movies, games, and music videos in 2025, and why its role will only grow in the years to come.
🎥 VFX in Movies: Beyond Green Screens
Filmmakers today don’t just use VFX to create explosions or alien landscapes—they use it to build entire narratives. Modern VFX blends into storytelling so seamlessly that viewers rarely notice it.
1. Virtual Production Takes Center Stage Virtual production, where digital environments are rendered in real-time on LED walls, has revolutionized how scenes are filmed. Directors and actors now visualize entire digital worlds as they perform, without waiting for post-production. This not only saves time but enhances creativity and spontaneity on set.
2. AI-Powered Efficiency Artificial intelligence is reshaping the VFX pipeline. Tasks that once took hours—like rotoscoping or background removal—are now automated. AI also helps in generating realistic facial expressions, lighting adjustments, and even entire scene simulations, allowing artists to focus more on storytelling.
3. Photoreal Characters and Environments We’re witnessing digital characters and environments that are indistinguishable from reality. From period dramas to sci-fi thrillers, filmmakers now recreate everything from ancient cities to alien planets with jaw-dropping realism. This level of detail not only stuns audiences but also maintains narrative depth.
4. Hybrid Shoots with Practical and Digital Effects Combining live-action with digital enhancement is becoming more common. Rain, fire, debris, and crowd effects are now created digitally while preserving the physical performance of actors. This hybrid method reduces risk and cost without compromising the visual impact.
🎮 VFX in Games: Where Real-Time Reigns
Unlike movies, where VFX is designed for passive viewing, in games, every visual must respond to player interaction. This makes game VFX one of the most dynamic and technically demanding arenas in the industry.
1. Cinematic Quality in Real-Time Game engines like Unreal and Unity are delivering near-cinematic visuals. Real-time lighting, ray tracing, and advanced shaders bring incredible realism to in-game environments. Players now navigate worlds where wind blows through trees, fire reacts to proximity, and water behaves with fluid physics—all in real-time.
2. Procedural VFX and AI Tools Game developers increasingly rely on AI and procedural techniques to generate environments, explosions, magic spells, and more. These systems adjust dynamically based on game conditions, making each playthrough unique.
3. VFX as Gameplay Language In games, VFX does more than look good—it communicates. A glowing orb signals power. A ripple in the sky might suggest a portal. VFX helps players make sense of a complex game world without needing text or dialogue.
4. VR and AR Integration Immersive gaming experiences in virtual and augmented reality now demand even more precise visual feedback. VFX artists are crafting interactive fog, reactive fire, and responsive damage effects that work seamlessly in 360-degree environments, pushing immersion to a new level.
🎵 VFX in Music Videos: Style Meets Substance
Music videos are the perfect playground for experimental visual effects. Artists use VFX not just for spectacle but to amplify meaning and aesthetics.
1. AI-Generated Effects for Indie Creators With user-friendly AI tools, musicians now have access to VFX even without big studio budgets. AI enables stylized visuals like animated paint strokes, virtual dancers, or glitch effects, adding flavor to a video without high production costs.
2. One-Shot Magic with Digital Flair Single-shot music videos are trending. VFX artists add subtle elements—like shifting backgrounds or mood-based lighting—that keep visuals engaging while maintaining the raw energy of a continuous take.
3. Retro and Collage Aesthetics Nostalgic styles like VHS grain, chromatic aberration, and layered collage art are making a big comeback. VFX teams mimic the imperfections of old tech to give music videos an emotional or vintage edge.
4. Audience Interaction in Visuals Interactive music videos and 360-degree formats allow viewers to engage with visuals from different angles. This gives artists a new medium to tell their stories while strengthening the bond with fans.
What’s New in the VFX World?
2025 is seeing exciting shifts:
Neural rendering is allowing artists to generate realistic facial animations without traditional rigging.
Prompt-based VFX creation is on the rise, where creators can describe an effect in words and see it generated instantly.
Cross-industry collaboration is thriving, with filmmakers and game developers sharing tools and techniques more than ever before.
Regional growth in VFX training and outsourcing is expanding, especially in Indian metros where infrastructure and talent are surging.
In fact, Bengaluru is emerging as a creative powerhouse, with local studios contributing to global VFX projects and a growing demand for skilled professionals. Many students are exploring options like enrolling in an Animation course in Bengaluru to tap into the opportunities within the booming VFX sector.
The Human Side of VFX
Beyond the software and tools, VFX is deeply human. It’s about capturing emotion, enhancing performance, and drawing the audience into the story. Whether it’s the look in a digital character’s eyes or the thunderclouds rolling in behind a pop star, the goal is always to make the unbelievable feel real.
And this realism, ironically, comes from the minds and hands of artists. They sketch, animate, model, and simulate, often obsessing over tiny details no one might notice—but everyone will feel.
Conclusion
VFX is not just a technical add-on anymore—it’s a storyteller’s companion. Whether building mythological kingdoms in films, enhancing gameplay environments, or adding surreal flair to music videos, VFX continues to stretch the limits of what’s possible on screen. And as demand grows for high-quality content across platforms, regions like Bengaluru are also witnessing a surge in animation education and training. For aspiring creators, enrolling in a 3D animation course bengaluru could be a step into one of the most exciting, evolving, and creatively rewarding careers of our time.

Web Design Melbourne: Designing Websites That Are Aesthetically And Functionally Impactful
