Bluntblackjew via Instagram: "Jamaican Jewish history is so extensive that this post would, instead of 7 slides, probably extend to 30 or more. That is what I love about the history of Jamaica, and the fact this is history is living history. This condensed version is how Jamaican Jews came as refugees and became one of the many people on the island to directly influence history "Jews in the Caribbean, especially Safardi Jews, never disappeared. We continue to exist, and I hope this post educates and removes the erasure of our history that we continue to see."

LP cover of Harry Belafonte’s album “An Evening with Belafonte” (1957).
The album featured his version of the Hebrew song “Hava Nageela”.
Its popularity led to Belafonte once referring to himself as “the most popular Jew to America”.
His version of the song is believed to be the most popular, with Belafonte claiming “most Jews in America learned that song from me”. It became a staple at Jewish celebrations, especially weddings.
Belafonte was of Sephardic Jewish, Afro-Jamaican, Dutch, and Scottish descent. Although he was raised Catholic, he honored his Jewish heritage throughout his career, between singing this song at nearly every one of his concerts, and playing the Jewish angel Alexander in the film “The Angel Levine” (1970).

Bunny’s Moral Crisis and Julian being Anti Judeo-Christian
I was positive I got the impression, during my first read of TSH, that Bunny was truly morally bothered by the farmer-killing. Then I started wondering, post-reading, if I was being too generous, and Bunny legit was just worried for his life and was angry that the group was keeping secrets from him (that second one is what Henry told Richard).
But I got to the part in my on-and-off listening to the audiobook where Julian tells Richard he’s wondering what’s going on with Bunny. Julian says Bunny keeps approaching him and asking to talk about morality (particularly sin and forgiveness). Julian says he’s getting concerned that Bunny may convert to Marion’s religion. He asks Richard what denomination she is, and Richard says he thinks she’s Presbyterian. Julian is disappointed and says the only Christian denomination he can gracefully accept losing a student to is Roman Catholic.
Now this scene is interesting to me for a couple reasons. Firstly, it does indicate there may be more going on with Bunny internally than the Greek class gives him credit for. If Bunny is trying to approach Julian privately to talk about ethical dilemmas, this shows some level of genuineness in his questions (Julian also believes it to be earnest questioning). But secondly, Julian’s comment about only finding the Roman rite to be a worthy foe is so, so interesting to me.
The scene shows that something more is going on with Bunny, but it also reveals that Julian hates Judaism and Christianity— making exceptions for people like Dante and Giotto. The thing that’s fascinating to me about this detail is that Julian’s statements show the central theme of the whole book: that beauty is worth something if it’s backed by things of substance (Georges Laforgue says this, and the same thing is said by Theo in The Goldfinch. This is a concept important to Tartt’s writing).
Julian has a basic respect for Catholics, because Catholicism traditionally also has emphasis on art, philosophy, and classical aesthetic beauty. And, perhaps most importantly, Roman Catholics have kept Latin as the language of the Church and Vatican. The medieval Catholic Church was perhaps the biggest patron and commissioner of artists, and from the Catholic Church came Notre Dame, Aquinas, Dante, etc. Here, Julian mentions that the Catholics make “worthy foes” for the pagans, and what he means is that there’s all this aesthetic beauty and classical study within the Catholic Church. But it’s key here that Julian hates other branches of Christianity. The scene emphasizes that the only thing he enjoys about Catholics is their specifically classical history.
The thing I like about this detail is that it is a really specific bit of characterization to show that Julian does not care about morality or the search for truth that’s at the heart of all religions and mythologies. He’s different from people like Aquinas because he does not see human art and language as a means to articulate and pay homage one’s moral beliefs. He sees art/language as the highest good in and of itself. Once you remove the classics aspects of Catholicism, Julian does not care. And we see this because of his apparent disdain for Protestants and Jews. This also reminds me of Bunny saying Henry thinks Jamaicans have no culture. Obviously, they do, but it’s not the particular kind of culture and expression Julian and Henry find legitimate.
I guess I like how Donna Tartt understands her own theme and can show how it’s applicable so naturally just in the way her characters talk. We get a lot of hints about how closed-minded and shallow Julian actually is before we get to the end of the book where it’s confirmed.

I’m a Jamaican Jew and I’ve been wondering if any boycotts of the new Bob Marley movie will happen due to the Marley’s connection and support of Israel. Ziggy Marley himself won an award for support of Israel and is married to an Israeli. Rastafarianism (and many of Bob Marley’s songs) was greatly influenced by Judaism. (Rasta’s are not like BHI though, they don’t believe they are the ‘real Jews’ or anything, it just influenced them). I know most people are not aware of this, but with how adamant people are in searching for any connection to Jewishness a person/brand/company etc might have and then vilifying it for being ‘Zionist’ it does make me wonder if it’ll happen. I’ve already seen many people judge the family for their Zionism, but I hope it doesn’t spread to attempts to boycott the movie bc that’ll just suck, Bob doesn’t deserve to have his story hijacked by antisemitism.
That's a fascinating question - and one I'm not suited to answer at all! I did a quick search and saw nothing suggesting people were protesting the movie at all, but if anyone has heard otherwise, please feel free to write in a follow-up.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard of “skinheads” being racist. You might have also heard that not ALL of them are racist. So, what’s the deal?
Out of curiosity and not being able to sleep, I did a quick Wikipedia read.
It’s probably not news to you that there are distinct generations of punk. We’re, of course, in our own.
The skinhead movement started in the late 50s. This is where you get your work boots, straight pants, etc. look. Only, they weren’t skinheads just yet. This movement was known as “mods”, “a youth subculture noted for its consumerism and devotion to fashion and music”. The consumerism part doesn’t sound a whole lot like punk today, but the “devotion to fashion and music” sure does.
From there in the late 60s there was a split between “peacock mods”, or those who were more into the latest fashion, according to Wikipedia, and the more traditional working-class image of punks denoted by their shorter hair. It’s not entirely sure if the cutting of hair was more for defiance against “mainstream” hippie culture or for ease’s sake as a working class, but I suspect it’s probably a mix of both and so much more.
From there the skinhead movement became heavily influence by Jamaican culture, which is extremely fascinating! Around this time there was also a break off group in Australia.
In the 70s skinhead culture, which originally was said to be apolitical, started diverging into other groups. However, late 70s is where the punk movement we think about today really kicked off. This is where some skinheads started joining up with far-right groups. It doesn’t really say why, though.
From here we narrow in our focus away from Britain and the United States towards Germany, which has a big cultural impact in the punk scene. In West Germany factions of neo-nazi groups and anti-fascist groups were at arms. In East Germany two factions were also forming: one focused on the aesthetics of punk and one focusing on the ideals of punk. Gone were the days of apolitical skinheads in Germany.
Going back to the UK, in the late 70s and early 80s, however, there WAS a group of apolitical skinheads. These were characterized by the Oi! subgenera of punk.
In other parts of Europe, groups of skinheads seemed to be left-wing and antiracist since it’s original conception in the 60s. There’s also mention of racism from both black and white skinheads against South Asians in the UK.
From this, though, grew fractions that were vocally anti-racist, notably “redskin” and “anarchist” skinheads. The use of the word “redskin” is interesting, looking back from today’s perspective and how the term has been historically used over here in the United States with racism against Native Americans, and the push to remove the word from popular American Culture, like in sports teams.
It was skinheads, actually, who supposedly brought the term “ACAB”, or “All Cops Are Bastards” into popular usage, from a punk song.
And so, I bring us to today: where neo-nazism is still alive and well, and goes hand-in-hand with antiblackness, and so much more. I think these days we use neo-nazism as a broad term for people who are loudly outspoken against more than just violence against Jews, however, it’s important to realize that violence and discrimination against Jews is the biggest and core part of neo-nazism.
We look back at the legacy of a movement we’re trying to uphold today, but a movement at it’s core is just people. People laughing, people drinking, people smoking, people just being people. So… how do we tell what is okay to reblog and what isn’t?
Well, some things are obvious, at least. Does someone have a swastika? If so, is it crossed out, or is it displayed prominently. See the word “nazi”? What’s the context around it?
Somethings are less obvious. Lace code. Patches that reference things from long ago. What bands you’re listening to, what local underground movements you’re supporting. These are less obvious to know the history of, to the average tumblr blogger in 2023.
So what can we do?
Well. We can learn the history for starters. I’m not saying we need to go and learn about every particular subculture and band and movement and code and this and that and-
But you can Wikipedia the history of a movement you’re not really sure about. That’s a start, at least. You can learn some terms, “buzzwords”, if you will. Learn what some symbols you see often mean. Learn what bands the antifacist punks were listening to and what bands the racist punks were listening to. It’s a start.
You can also talk to people who still identify with the skinhead movement here on tumblr or in real life if you can find them. Get their opinions and see what they think. Hear what they’re saying and decide for yourself what you want to support. You should do that for pretty much any movement, not just skinheads.
Today it seems like skinheads have a gay subculture. Was that a part of history that’s been largely ignored or erased? Or is that something that’s come about in more recent years?
The punk movement is a very broad one with lots of overlapping cultures and subcultures and branches off- a great way to see that is simply falling down a rabbit hole of tumblr blogs or Wikipedia articles. It’s easier than ever to see all the parts of something. But that can make it overwhelming. It’s okay to break it down as needed.

Sorry, did I just see someone on this webbed site of all places in 2023 say they’re pro-gentrification 🤡
The city I lived in as a kid used to be affordable, with a very diverse neighbourhood (mixture of South Asian Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, Israeli and Polish Jews, Black Jamaicans and then my white Christian family) who would all talk to each other. I was always getting invited over to parties and for food and I loved learning about everyone’s different cultures. If something suspicious was happening, we’d all know because we’d communicate and keep people safe. I think only 2 maybe 3 crimes happened in our neighbourhood the entire 10 years I was living there.
Now there’s more flats than fields, rent is around the benchmark of £1k a month not including bills when £400 a month bills included used to mean you were posh, almost everyone there is white and the crime rates have absolutely skyrocketed.
“Keeping the undesirables out” my arse. Just say you’re racist and hate poor people and go fuck yourself.

nevermind the balkans. have you ever heard of arabs being both white and not white. of black americans going to jamaica and the jamaicans calling them white because they're from america. of south america having a totally different categorization of race in which people which are lets say black in one place are white in another or vice versa. ever thought about how jews are white but also they're not and this has changed throughout history. that time when sicilian italians were considered "worst than blank people" in america and not even white by northern italians but were considered closer to africans. slavs being called for most of history not white but rather backward barbarians - that time when hitler said they were african (???) and thats why they were good at ballet. hey ever hear about how for a long time no matter your ethnicity if you were muslim you were arab. ever hear about how some dark skinned indians are considered black not brown. ever hear of africans saying theyre not black. ever hear of mixed people in america whose skin is very white but whose features are very black and they still call themselves black to keep to culture. ever -
like lol. im not saying anything out of the ordinary at all. history and international culture very much shows that much of this is constructed and flexible

I feel like we may be the only Jews on here?? Aka I must know your opinion on gefilte fish. Personally I kinda like it🫣 I’m absolutely with you on the charoset and maror I truly would eat it year round
AHHHHH ok so yeah i think the jewish grestie community on tumblr is relatively small i haven't seen many tribe members on here
re: gefilte fish, i will only eat it if it's made by my family. i refuse to eat whatever comes in the jars. it's just an absolute no for me dawg
re: charoset, my mom made the apple walnut charoset so no dates or figs or raisins (i hate raisins). that with maror (horseradish for the goyim who don't know) on a piece of lettuce?? DELICIOUS
my family used to go down to orlando florida for passover bc my uncle catered there for like this massive jewish community but there were a few years we didn't go and we'd have tiny seders at home just me and my parents. one year i had a bunch of my friends come over (none of whom were jewish) and one of my friends who is indian, another friend who is jamaican, and my father had a competition to see who could eat the biggest spoonful of just straight up maror without dying

Hard to guess who it is? Born of a white father and a Jamaican mother, the perfect mix created hits by the ton, Bob Marley 1965.
