5. Paard uit Friesland Phryso (in English: Horse from Friesland Phryso) from c. 1578 - 1583 and attributed to Hendrick Goltzius, after a design by Jan van der Straet. Even though not referred to as a Friesian this is a horse from Friesland - the Dutch province that Friesians orginated in - that shows the same features and likely gives a sense of the breeds earlier origins and appearance.

While mapmakers were filling their blank spaces with American animals, other artists were including American creatures in allegories. During the Renaissance, allegories — symbolic representations of the various continents that used mythological figures and an array of creatures to represent the “true” nature of a region — were all the rage.
Jan van der Straet, a Dutch artist, composed this one in the 1580s. We see Amerigo Vespucci encountering a naked, female America who is surrounded by the fauna of her continent.
You can see an anteater, a wolf, and a weird little guy climbing the tree behind her (I have no idea what he’s supposed to be). It all seems rather idyllic.

Much more here, including a naked America riding a giant armadillo:
A 16th-century alchemist artwork as depicted by the Flemish artist Jan van der Straet. The scene shows a laboratory, with furnaces blazing and the assistants hard at work with a variety of elaborate and specialized equipment. - Alchemy, the ancient science.
Another beautiful piece of artwork, that I think really captures the energy of an alchemist's laboratory. - Alchemister

GIOVANNI STRADANO a Firenze 1523-2023.
