A lone tomb, a memory of Syonan Shipyard, and their links to Keppel House
Much has been made about the “mysterious” solitary Japanese tomb sitting on the southern slopes of Mount Faber. The tomb, which could be thought of as a memorial to a painful time in Singapore’s history, contains the remains of a member of staff of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) Kobe shipyard, a naval architect by the name of Komoto Ekasa (or Omoto Egasa). Komoto was among an group of 94 MHI…

hey good evening, as a keeper of TLT knowledge, do you know if anyone wrote a post detailing the personal pronouns used in the japanese translation? it can say a lot about a character but I haven't been able to hunt it down myself. I need to know if Gideon is a boku or an atashi person to the translator. it feels like too much to hope for ore even though that would annoy Harrow the most.
looks like according to these posts on reddit [source], the japanese translation uses atashi!
[other source]
for context, atashi s is a personal pronoun (like "i" or "my") in japanese that is usually used by a person wanting sound more feminine/by women [source]. From a western understanding of butchness, this does seem like a bit of a miss by the translators, BUT!!! as someone not familiar with Japanese Butch Culture™ (or, frankly, Japanese culture in general) I would hesitate to pass judgement without knowing how butches/masculine lesbians in Japan refer to themselves/what they think of this.
(If anyone reading this is more familiar with Japanese butch/lesbian culture and wants chime in, I am interested to know how this reads to you!!)

I just dicovered you whumplist for gods quiz, and omg the whump is just soooo good. Thank you so much for your work! I was wondering if you also saw the seasons 3-5 and could tell me if there is good whump in them aswell. Especially if the headaches continue (headaches are my fav whump trope so this would be gold for me)
Have a nice day :)
Hello! I noticed you in my inbox heheh I'm glad you liked it! Yes there is whump in 3-5, with various tropes alongside his headaches and it gets juicy let me tell you. I have been slowly re-watching the seasons as I plan to make a whump list for them too at a later date!
In the meantime, as headaches are also one of my favourite tropes too, I have a humble offering for you 🤲 Listed below are some whump lists/content I have done that contain the headache trope:
The character Date from my Kamen Rider OOO List
Emu from Kamen Rider Ex Aid list
Takeru from Kamen Rider Ghost list and clip
Kaito from Ghost Friends
+ an honourable mention to Liu Sang from The Lost Tomb who has sensitive hearing which mainly causes him ear pain but he does have some headaches due to his hearing/loud noises

National Treasure 2.3-Meter Sword and Mirror Discovered in Japan
The largest bronze mirror and the largest “dako” iron sword in Japan were discovered at the Tomio Maruyama burial mound in Nara.
Experts say the twin discoveries from the Tomio Maruyama Tumulus last November can be classified as national treasures, with the shield-shaped mirror being the first of its kind.
The Nara Municipal Buried Cultural Properties Research Center, which excavates and researches Tomiomaruyama kofun, and the Nara Prefectural Archaeological Institute of Kashihara, which assists in the excavation, announced the discoveries on Jan. 25.
The 2.3-meter sword with a meandering blade is also the largest iron sword made in that period in East Asia.
The patterned surface of the mirror carries the designs of two more common “daryu” mirrors, distinctive with its designs based on imaginative creatures, which have been found mainly in western Japan.
The shield-shaped mirror is 64 cm in length, 31 cm in width at most, and weighs 5.7 kilograms. Typically, bronze mirrors that are found at archaeological sites are rounded, but this one is shield-shaped.
The sword is the oldest of the dako swords, distinguished by their wavy, snake-like shapes, which give rise to their name. As burial goods, more than 80 other dako swords have been discovered throughout Japan.
The latest sword has markings of a sheath and handle, and together, its length measures 2.6 meters, more than dominating the last longest dako sword discovered at around 85 cm.
“(These discoveries) indicate that the technology of the Kofun period (300-710 AD) are beyond what had been imagined, and they are masterpieces in metalwork from that period,” said Kosaku Okabayashi, the deputy director for Nara Prefecture’s Archaeological Institute of Kashihara.
Mirror and shields are considered to be tools to protect the dead from evil spirits. The sword is thought to have been enlarged to increase its power, and the possibility of its use as a battle tool is low, researchers said.
The 109-m-diameter Tomio Maruyama burial mound, the largest in Japan and dating to the late 4th century, is believed to have belonged to a significant person who supported the Yamato rulers at the time.
The burial chamber where the discoveries were made is thought to have belonged to someone close to that person, according to Naohiro Toyoshima, an archaeology professor at Nara University. He also said that the ritualistic sword and the shield-shaped mirror may indicate that the individual was involved in military and ritualistic matters.

On the Nintendo switch I'm instead (re)playing the first metal gear solid collection. I'm experiencing the first game with the infamous Italian dub, a dub so bad that the rest of the series was never dubbed in Italian again ❤️
Waiting also for the tomb raider remaster. Wonder if that will also have the historical Italian dub! In any case, I'm going slowly and justling these playthroughs with other stuff (goddamn Spelunky eating my brain, but also other things). Since I'll go back to work soon I've decided to stop worrying about backlogs - although it's easier said than done - and try to do each thing little by little.

in a complete turnaround from last week, i now apparently have loads to talk about asdfghjkl
i actually sat down last sunday and finished acceptance basically in one sitting, which i think was probably the best way to go about it. i'm pretty happy with the ending, just enough was revealed to feel satisfying to me but not so much that everything lost that kind of eldritch horror feel. i'm happy i read the series in full!
i also finished the audiobook of i was born for this, which i thoroughly enjoyed, both of the actors did a great job. still have some of the same misgivings as i did the last time i read it, but going into it with that knowledge i was prepared to just turn my brain off and have a good time with it, rather than expect more from it than it could give me.
tho ig it's technically study material, i finally finished kiki's delivery service (the book) and tho ofc it's different to the film and very much aimed at younger kids, i had fun! might read it again in a year or so and see if it's any easier.
in terms of books i've started, in paperback i'm working my way through a memory called empire by arkady martine which so far (a quarter of the way, ish) is excellent, and for audiobook i've started the bone maker by sarah beth durst and i'm not sure i like the way the person reads it, but i'm liking the content so far. i'm only about an hour in, so we'll see if i get used to the voice!
OH and not longer after i started empire, a book i reserved at the library came in, so i started and finished that (very, very short). it was different for boys by patrick ness and i think it made its point pretty well, about censorship and what makes it through when it shouldn't and vice versa. could have done with being longer and more fleshed out to be more enjoyable as a story, but as framing for what he wants to say it works well enough. the fourth wall is also absolutely non-existent, from the first page, which i loved but might be a turnoff for some people. the illustrations were fine, i don't think they added much of anything most of the time? but they made the pacing better, if that makes sense.
hopefully next week this post is shorter!
