Best books you've read about 9/11/2001?
The books that come to mind immediately are:
Fall and Rise: The Story of 9/11 Mitchell Zuckoff (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 Garrett M. Graff (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
102 Minutes: The Unforgettable Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO)
And, honestly, I think one of the best overall accounts of the events of September 11, 2001 is the government's actual report issued by the 9/11 Commission:
The 9/11 Commission Report: Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) The report is available in the usual formats just like the other books, but since it's a government report, it's also in the public domain, so you can instantly download the entire thing for free.

i am primarily a non-fiction girlie. i like reading about historical things. you could say i have a niche. can you guess what it is?
102 minutes that changed america by jim dwyer and kevin flynn. i consider this a must read about 9/11. it's an engaging read and i promise you will come out of it infuriated about new york real estate codes but also it humanizes the event. there were real heroes that day. the history channel also did a documentary of the same name.
the invention of murder: how the victorians revelled in death and detection and created modern crime by judith fanders. this one of not for the faint of heart. it's a beast of a book. but it's incredibly interesting and full of information. we've always been weird freaks.
stiff: the curious lives of human cadavers by mary roach. i will not lie i got this book due to a sterek fanfic and i did not regret it. if you ever wanted to know how cadavers have contributed to science and human safety this is the book to read.
this republic of suffering: death and the american civil war by drew gilpin faust. this is one of my incredibly niche interests. the american civil war fundamentally changed the american relationship with death (and religion) which is fascinating. men died far away from home and americans had to learn to cope with mass death.
working stiff: two years, 262 bodies, and the making of a medical examiner by judy melinek and t.j mitchell. dr judy melinek started working as a pathologist for new york city two months before 9/11 and a few other big events. i found this super compelling.
plague (black death & pestilence in europe) by william g. naphy and andrew spicer. i just want y'all to know i was reading this book in feburary 2020 (☞゚ヮ゚)☞. it's also super informative. who doesn't like reading about the black death and societal changes because of it?
assassination vacation by sarah vowell. i discovered this book due to the incredibles dvd giving sarah vowell a spotlight on it. she is the voice of violet parr and an essayist. i recommend any book by her and she was a semi-frequent guest on the daily show during jon stewart's tenure. by this one? it's about presidential assassinations -- a favorite topic of mine.
how to fight presidents: defending yourself against the badasses who ran this country by daniel o'brien. this is written by cracked alumn and now writer for the late late show daniel o'brien. he liked my tweet about it. pour one out for him not only having to read about mallard filmore but he also was spoken to by the secret service and not allowed to include any living presidents (at the time) in the book.
the witches: suspicion, betrayal, and hysteria in 1692 salem by stacy schiff. a really in depth look at the salem witch trials that i considered quite the page turner. i consider it a god forbid woman do anything tale. her book on cleopatra was also riveting.

Took this shot in Indiana couple years ago I n my way back from Smokies. There were hundreds of fireflies. Night to remember. Enjoy and repost freely. :: [Radim Photo]

“I’m not personally obsessed with death. At a certain age, the light that you live in is inhabited by the shades - it ‘tis,” Mr. Heaney said. “I’m very conscious that people dear to me are alive in my imagination - poets in particular. There’s an elegy for Joseph Brodsky, an elegy for Ted Hughes. These people are with me. It’s just a stage of your life when the death of people doesn’t banish them out of your consciousness. They’re part of the light in your head.”
- Seamus Heaney in an interview with Jim Dwyer June 2, 2001 [Whiskey River Commonplace Book]

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...
i definitely don’t mind, i LOVE getting asks so everyone please feel free to message me or send asks
here it goes
my top 10 favourite characters EVER (in no particular order)
1. nick miller (new girl)
- he’s so chaotic and stupid and i relate to him so much, definitely one of my favourite comfort characters
2. andy dwyer (parks and recreation)
- also chaotic and stupid, i just think he’s funny and adorable, just generally wholesome, another favourite comfort character
3. loki laufeyson (marvel cinematic universe)
- he’s on that absolute king shit!!! chaotic, funny, badass, has magic and can be scary (which is a slay). the fact that he’s queer is a major plus too
4. scott lang (marvel cinematic universe)
- just a goofy lil guy with so much love in his heart. another amazing and wholesome comfort character
5. merlin + arthur pendragon (bbc merlin)
- 2 for 1 cause they’re best together. i read merthur fics everyday and while i know fics aren’t accurate to their actual character/canon, they have one of the best dynamics ive ever seen
6. adelina amouteru (the young elites trilogy by marie lu)
- been ages since i read this but adelina is such a cool character. if i had powers, id want to have hers (or flying, that’d be great). actually went as adelina for halloween once. 10000/10 recommend the young elites
7. lena luthor / morgana pendragon (supergirl / bbc merlin)
- another 2 for 1. i watched merlin because i saw katie mcgrath in supergirl and now i read merthur everyday. both lena and morgana’s journeys are beautiful imo. lena from light to dark back to light. morgana’s from light to dark when it was so preventable. perfect characters for a perfect actress
8. nick nelson (heartstopper tv)
- i related to his s1 storyline quite a bit but overall he’s just such a loving character. sometimes when i see him on screen, i think he’s gonna explode with how much he loves charlie, his mom, nellie. reblog if u also need a nick nelson hug LOL
9. mirabella (three dark crowns series by kendare blake)
- one of my favourite book series and my favourite mc!! like seriously guys look up this series, the original plot is so cool and there’s some plot twists that made my jaw drop - my sister rating goes mirabella, katharine, arsinoe btw hehe
10. dwight schrute (the office)
- he carried the show tbh. especially after michael left. i never rly cared much for jim and pam (ofc i wanted them to get together but i don’t love them). dwight was consistently funny and chaotic, and most of the best plots included/rided on him
honourable mentions:
- lily tucker-pritchett (modern family)
- jaskier (the witcher)
- geralt of rivia (the witcher)
- edna mode (the incredibles)
- craig pelton (community)
- finnick odair (the hunger games)
- lucifer morningstar (lucifer)
honourable duo/trio mentions:
- wong + madisynn (she-hulk)
- steven grant + marc spector (moon knight)
- cam tucker + phil dunphy + gloria pritchett (modern family)

Jim Hopper Masterlist
Jim Hopper
Don't Call Her Annie (Complete) : Annette Horowitz is Joyce's younger sister. She hasn't been the perfect sibling or aunt but after she finds out Will is missing, she finds herself crashing back into Hawkins to do everything in her power to help, driven by a need to prove she isn't a bad person. She hasn't been around much in the past 20 or so years, but when she comes back home she finds old friends, old habits and old feelings she'd thought she'd finally escaped. Can she really change or is she just kidding herself?  Chapters containing explicit sexual content are in bold.
Part 1 Intro, Part 2 Advice & Arrests, Part 3 Bars, blankets & Bonfires, Part 4 Drunk & Discussions, Part 5 Preferences & Propositions, Part 6 Birthdays & Anniversaries, Part 7 Memories & Monologues, Part 8: Dusk & Dawn. Part 9: Valentine & Variation , Part 10 Reflection & Reassurance Part 11 Dancing & Domesticity Part 12 Music & Misunderstanding Part 13 Nostalgia & Now
Before & After : Dealing with the 1 year anniversary of her almost life-ending accident coming up soon, our main character not only has to deal with how this makes her feel, but also how it’s making Jim feel. Chapters containing explicit sexual content are in bold.
Chapter 1 Before, Chapter 2 The Day Before, Chapter 3 Preparation, Chapter 4 Pt. 1 The Anniversary, Chapter 4 Pt. 2 The Sleepover  Chapter 5 The Honeymoon Phase , Chapter 6 Control , Chapter 7 Losing It, Chapter 8 Finding It Chapter 9 Figuring It Out
Summer of Hopper : Hopper is in pieces after coming back to Hawkins after Vietnam. How long will you be able to be the strong one if you are also on the edge from taking care of him? If you both break…then what happens?
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3
Some Legs Are Meant To Be Broken (Complete): When Hopper breaks both of his legs, and you’re the newest employee at the station, it means you get recruited to be his babysitter. Would he be as frustratingly difficult to deal with as you imagine? (Originated from a request to write Hopper in a similar situation to Andy Dwyer from Parks and Rec when he had two broken legs. This was where that prompt took me.)  Chapters containing explicit sexual content are in bold.
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3
One Shots - Jim Hopper (SMUT)
An Act of Nature: You move back to Hawkins, luckily you hit it off with a friend of your stepbrothers. When Chief Hopper finally gets around to asking you out, what is it going to take for the two of you to find time alone? An act of nature?
Not the fun kind of Daddy issues: Jim Hopper is your ex-husband. The fire burned bright but you just aren’t good for each other, you know it. You both try to deal with divorce and trying to raise Jane together despite your differences. Will she end up bringing you back together, or tearing you apart? Or maybe a little of both?
Long Day, Longer Night: A long day turns into an even longer night after you find yourself alone with the Chief…yet again. (My Valentine's fic. Tried to make something romantic and wax poetic a bit.) <3
Don’t Mess With Jim: It’s been a long week without being able to see your favorite man, and you intend to make sure he remembers what he’s been missing. You’re reminded of just how powerful of an affect Jim’s words can have on you (and others).

Ramblin' Man - Film Review: You Can't Stay Here ★★★1/2
Tumblr media
The new queer cinema of the 1990s gets reborn courtesy of one of its OGs, Todd Verow. With his micro-budget new thriller, You Can’t Stay Here, co-written by longtime collaborator Jim Dwyer, that raw, confrontational, punk sensibility feels like a breath of fresh air in our current stale, over-processed cinematic environment. Harkening back to his work on Frisk, which put Verow on the map in 1995, the film plays like a mashup of that title along with Cruising and Blow-Up.
Guillermo Diaz stars as Rick, a photographer, who finds himself drawn to the Ramble, a busy Central Park gay cruising spot circa 1993 in New York City. Rather than engaging in hookups himself, Rick prefers to hide behind his camera taking pictures of the many sexual scenarios on display. Before you can say “Antonioni”, Rick has spotted something nefarious going on in his photos, an ominous guy in a trench coat. On a return visit to the park, Rick witnesses the man known as Adam (Justin Ivan Brown) committing a brutal murder. That he presents as an all-seeing, all-knowing vampire armed with a knife and a lethal bottle of poppers, serves as an apt metaphor for the AIDS crisis decimating the gay community. The dangerous game of cat and mouse between Rick and Adam takes up the bulk of the running time, along with a burgeoning relationship with one of the Ramble regulars named Hale, played sweetly by Becca Blackwell.
While scary and suspenseful, the real heart of the film lies with Rick’s internal struggles. He appears to fear intimacy with the story serving as a journey towards accepting himself. He shares a son with his ex-wife Samantha (a wonderfully grounded Karina Arroyave), who caught him with another man one day in their apartment. He’s also tending to his ailing mother, an excellent Marlene Forte, who doesn’t hold back when spewing homophobic comments directed at her son. His demanding boss Wren, comically played by Vanessa Aspillaga, adds additional stress to his life.
I saw this film as a course correction to Cruising, which only vaguely alluded to Al Pacino’s sexual awakening as he hunted down a gay serial killer. In Verow’s film! he addresses similar themes far more explicitly. Bonus points for no dialogue like, “Hips or lips?” Verow, like the late William Friedkin, doesn’t shy away from graphic sexuality but the gay male gaze adds an authenticity Cruising lacked.
Much of the credit for the success of the film goes to Diaz, who delivers a quiet, soulful performance with all of the horrors of the world right there in his empathetic eyes. No stranger to the new queer cinema and low-budget 90s films himself, with appearances in such seminal movies of the era such as Stonewall, Party Girl, I Think I Do, and Nowhere, it’s wonderful to see Diaz embracing his roots. He’s had a string of larger scale appearances in Weeds, Scandal, and Bros, all wonderful, but it’s exciting that he sought out Verow as a collaborator due to his desire to do something with more of an edge. Ryan Murphy has dedicated his career to lifting up queer voices and it’s lovely to see an actor of Diaz’s caliber doing the same. More of that, please!
This film will have its detractors who can’t get past its low budget production values, but in its own scrappy way, this film succeeds. I especially loved its John Carpenter-esque synth score by Greg Sabo which rides a fine line between pulse-pounding and campiness. Same goes for the film itself, which shrewdly personifies the terrors of its era while also possessing a little of that DIY John Waters humor. Add the beauty of a lost soul finding tenderness and you have a film that stands out amongst more forgettable fare.

On the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, I highly recommend the book 102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn. Not only does the book detail the time between the first plane hitting and the second building falling, the heroic actions of so many, the tragedy that too many experienced, but also the construction of the Twin Towers: how stairwells were removed to make room for more office space, how fire safety standards were lowered in an attempt to save money, how the people trapped above the points of impact could have survived if there was more consideration given to emergency preparedness. While no one expected a terrorist attack when constructing the building, I think it is important that we are aware of what happens when money and greed come before safety.

05x03 - One To One
TW: Misogyny and discussions of cancer and death.
Tony and June are called to help Susan whose friend, Jo, is threatening to commit suicide. Tom reminds Tony to use his 'famous tact' which makes June laugh as she drives. Tony can't get his gloves on quick enough when he hears Jo is a drug addict who hasn't had a fix for 3 days. He barks at Susan to not disappear as they want a statement from her.
Jo can be heard trashing her apartment as June and Tony head upstairs. Tony continues to judge when he sees men leaving, 'it's a knocking shop. We're wasting our time with a junkie tom!"
Said Junkie Tom is played by Arabella Weir. Jo shouts at them that they're too late to raise the property and she doesn't want help. She threatens to set fire to the place if June comes anywhere near her. She's already poured paraffin everywhere. Tony tells June to leave it. Jo orders them to get out. June says Tony can leave but she's not going anywhere as she wants to talk to her. She urges Tony to leave, warning him that she won't calm down with him glaring at her.
Tumblr media
Tony is really making no effort to disguise how he feels... (I have no idea where the idea of Tony being an avuncular supportive figure came from. Unpopular opinion perhaps but I found him mostly to be a judgemental arse often right through to the end and quick to take against his friends and gossip about them but the first to take MASSIVE offence if they did similar to him. Case in point being Jim Carver most often - the Lee Dwyer/Marie/June stuff being the most obvious parts but also blackmailing a moonlighting (because of debts) Amber to pretend to be his girlfriend when he hired an escort for a party and several occasions with Dave and Reg.)
He leaves the room and calls for a fire engine and ambulance to be on standby because 'the girl's playing silly beggars with paraffin and a lighter. Ackland's doing her samaritan bit'.
June asks Jo to give her the lighter to look after. Jo refuses and orders June to sit on the floor, blaming Susan for calling the police. June reassures her that they - like Susan - care and Jo scoffs. "You don't know me." June has to admit when questioned that all she knows about her is her first name. "People aren't allowed to kill themselves, that's why you came. I'm an addict, I'm not stupid!" She says she had it all planned out and was about to end it and they have ruined it. She asks June her name and tells her it's very boring and asks if she has a boring life. "... It's okay..." June says quietly. Jo rants and raves, telling June that she's burnt her septum away with her drug use so can't smell the paraffin she's poured everywhere. It also means she has to inject her cocaine now. She keeps whimpering for 'Nico' and then changing her mind saying no, she doesn't want him; she just wants it to end. June begs her to hang on a few more minutes to talk because she promised she would. After a bit of back and forth, Jo agrees not to set fire to herself whilst June talks to her.
June asks if she can make them a cup of tea, promising not to go near her. Jo refuses. June tells Jo she remembers her, she's the daughter of a local councillor. Nico is her pimp and Jo says he looks after her and pays her in drugs as long as 'she works hard'. There haven't been many 'customers' recently so he's not given her any drugs and has left her to suffer cold turkey as her punishment.
Tony continues to empty the building. One sex worker complains that she hasn't 'finished' with her customer. Tony suggests giving him a refund or a credit note as he leads them out, telling them they must stay out 'until they get the stupid little cow sorted'.
Jo tells June that she can't function without drug use. June explains that she's coming down and if she can last it out then she'd be clean. She begs her to hang on and let her help her. Jo accuses her of waiting until her friend returns with 'the rest' to rush her and take her out. She starts to rant that her mother was always on her back to do something with her life and to make something of herself. "I am doing something now, Mother." She spits. "Without you!" Jo is about to set fire to herself and June stammers the first thing she can think of to distract her. "It's a beautiful lighter, where did you get it from?" Jo is distracted and tells her it was a gift for getting into university. All she did with it was light her first joint with it and it spiralled from there. June tells her she wanted to go to university but wasn't brainy enough to get in. Jo tells her she was lucky.
Jo is clearly suffering from depression and tells June that she struggles to get up in the morning and get dressed. "You managed it this morning...?" "Because today was a big day!" Jo scoffs, starting to sob. She claims that Nico isn't there because he's afraid of watching. June admits she's scared. She tries to pounce on Jo but Jo dodges her and runs to the other side of the room. June distracts her from starting the fire by hearing someone outside. "Nico? Nico is that you?" Jo exclaims happily. Noone answers and June keeps listening, telling her that he could have brought her something good and what she's been waiting for. She encourages her to talk to him. Jo asks her to open the door. Outside the door is a little black cat who runs in. Jo breaks down again as June sighs and leans heavily against the wall.
Jo asks June to get the cat outside as she doesn't want her to see what she's going to do. The cat continues meowing pathetically and sounds hungry. June asks her if she has any food for her and Jo doesn't know. June chats about the cat to keep trying to distract Jo and make her realise she has something to live for. She finds some cat food and smuggles a tea towel into the sink whilst pretending she's looking for a tin opener. Jo locks the door and tells June she's missed her chance at leaving. "I told you, I don't want to go." She says calmly, not answering when Jo keeps asking her why she wants to watch her die.
Jo shouts at June that she's using the wrong dish to feed the cat and directs her to one that's already on the floor. June feeds the cat, telling Jo that the tuna is her cats favourite too. When the cat has eaten, June gives her a cuddle. She claims she's clearly well looked after and is a credit to Jo's caring skills. She tells her that she clearly wants her. Jo argues with June to get her to take the cat away so she doesn't see what happens to her - throwing the key over to the door for her to do so. June tells Jo to tell the cat why she's making her homeless and giving her up and to throw her outside herself. "Tell her you're coping out and leaving her to die!" she says pointedly. They argue and Jo strikes June, sending her flying.

Jo tells her to wash her mouth because she's got blood on it. June takes the opportunity to soak the tea towel whilst she does. She glances outside and spots the ambulance and fire brigade waiting. She asks Jo if she's ever seen a burnt body and that if she's trying to make a statement the world won't even realise she's made it. She claims it'll be written off as an accident to cover her mums reputation. Jo scoffs and suggests that they'll know what really happened and why. June tells her that she'll only be the one who truly hurts - other than the other residents who will also lose their homes. June reminds her that she cares about the cat and other residents. She can detox because June knows she's strong enough.
Jo realises that June is holding the tea towel behind her back and orders her to throw it away. She claims June is just like the rest who talk all the time to get what they want. June tells her she's seen her kind a thousand times before and that she doesn't truly know what it's like to have real pressure. She claims that real pressure is having to nurse her father through terminal cancer and watch him get weaker only to end up hating him because he won't die. She bursts into tears and turns away from Jo. "I didn't ask you to come here. The keys over there, get out!" Jo tells her. Jo goes to force June out only for June to force her down to the ground and overpower her, knocking the lighter from her hand. She then cradles Jo, promising her it's ok.

Jo keeps telling her she was going to do it and it wasn't a cry for help. June reassures her she understands and it's OK and she'll help her.

June sighs in relief and holds her until Jo hears June's radio crackle into life. Jo thinks 'the others' have been listening in, even when June tells her that they (her and Jo) can hear the radio but those outside the room can't hear them through it. Jo thinks they've been listening all the time and that they're laughing at her. She insists they don't give a toss and leaps on the lighter. She sets fire to her room. The two women fight as the fire grows and June shouts for Tony to help her as she's locked in the room. He kicks it in and the cat rushes out as he helps June wrestle Jo out. It's just in time as the windows explode upstairs.

"NHS are going to love you..." Tony scoffs to June as she helps Jo into the back of the ambulance.

June is contacted by Tom who asks her to call in at another job once she's had a cup of tea to get over what has happened!
