Dr. Nathan returns from her break and hears from O’Reily that he killed Keenan; Reimondo warns Nathan Nathan away from O’Reily but apparently she loves him now 🙄
Floria Mills is brought in as Glynn new secretary

Jeremiah Cloutier arrives at Oz and tries to reach Schillinger through Jesus but is rebuffed; later when he reaches Jim Burns through ??? something, Schillinger is convinced and wants to start counseling with Beecher
Ronnie Barlog and Burr Redding are introduced; McManus wants Said to play nice to prevent Redding from galvanizing the Homeboys; Redding meets with Poet, Morales and Pancamo
Chinese refugees arrive at Oz; Morales kills Yixue with a staple gun after having him point the finger at Redding
Tumblr media
Sister: What a sensible man! …Although what’s not sensible is Miguel being back in Oz in the special unit after escaping. (later) Sister: Ah, I see. They’re sending him to that little box. Me: No, that’s the Cage. He’s going to Solitary. Sister: Wow, they got so many punishment locations. Solitary, the Hole, and now the Cage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: Wow, [Omar] really came out of Solitary for five minutes, did a bunch of drugs, and got a bunch of ketchup on this guy’s white shirt.
Tumblr media
Sister: No, you should’ve put bees! Everyone should be give her the cold shoulder, not welcoming her back! She shouldn’t be back!
Tumblr media
Sister: What the heeeell is she doing the cafeteria? She literally came back to stare at him? Look, she just came in there to stare at him. Me: Well, actually there was a deleted scene that explains— Sister: They should put it back in!
Tumblr media
Ryan: (coughs) Sister: (gasp) He’s got syphilis. He has an STI. That’s why he’s all sweaty and shaky. It’s not a fever. That’s his existential doom. Me: It’s not an STI. Sister: Is there going to be a contagion episode? Me: No, I wish. 😔 Sister: Missed chance. Patient zero right here.
Tumblr media
Sister: She literally dresses like Ma.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: He’s changed sides, Wawa… Me: What? Sister: He’s changed sides…. Me: What? Sister: Sides… Me: What sides?? Sister: (solemn expression) The straights… Me (remembering Sister is the captain and sole crew member of Glynn/Mukada): Ah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: He’s got a tiny heart, though. He’s got a little grinch heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: Are the guards really gonna let him strangle this dude right in front of them? Ah… I see. They’re starting a cult.
Tumblr media
Sister: He got 13 years for car theft? How many cars did he steal?! Aren’t most of the guys in here for murder?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sister: I don’t know what games they’re playing here… I want my Miguel. Take us back to Solitary—I don’t care about this.
Tumblr media
Sister: This guy always has his boobs out.
Tumblr media
Sister: Why’s she talking so fucking slow? …She sounds like the actress speaks Cantonese not Mandarin. Me: That’s what I’m saying. None of them speak fluent Mandarin. They should be from Hong Kong or Guangdong. Sister: And the refugees look like they’re from that area, or possibly Malaysia or something. None of them look Northern, at least. Me: But guess where they’re from. Sister: Taiwan? Me: They’re from Chengdu, LOL. Sister: Well that’s why it must’ve cost them so much! They had to get to the ocean first! Me: They had to pay for the land travel to get to the boat first. Sister: Chengdu… They were running from the tigers, is that it? Wait, when is this? 1970? Me: It’s 2001… Sister: 2001?! They’re farmers from Chengdu?! [starts laughing] (*Chengdu is a landlocked municipal-level city)
Stray Thoughts
Sister remains unimpressed with Dr. Nathan
I love Floria. Her cackling like a witch when she gets the job is one of the funniest moments in the show
Penis count: 1
Carrie mentions that it’s been 5 months since Hank disappeared
Jim Burns is in Oz for murdering his brother
Spotted Chico 5 times around Oz/Em City after he gets stabbed at the start of the episode lol
The translator’s name is Gou Liu Xio which Murphy unhelpfully pronounces as “Gao Loo Zao”, which is a little baffling tbh as Xio is not a Chinese name so it could be Xiu or Xiao but Murphy’s pronounciation doesn’t really hint at which one it’s supposed to be.
Chinese refugee story made about as much sense to Sister as it did to me; we had a good laugh at the refugees being from Chengdu… Finally someone else who felt my pain over how stupid it was… And the way that Yixue & all them talk about being Chinese and what life was like and how they’d rather be dead in America… The dialogue is just very obviously not written by anyone with any kind of insight whatsoever. But you know, whatever lol. Par for the course.
Final Thoughts
Sister: I’m kind of happy they chose Chengdu for the place the refugees are from because at least it wasn’t like the usual choices. Like at least you get the impression someone looked at a map. Except they probably looked at the map and were like “Oh yeah, let’s pick Chengdu, it’s this place that looks like it's in the middle of nowhere right next to a bunch of mountains; it’s probably a little shanty town. They’re probably repressed there”. It’s like if you looked at a map now and decided to make all the farmers from Omaha, Nebraska, because it seems remote. But Omaha is like a tech city. I mean, I guess there would be farmers too, but like… We were in Chengdu in 2001, like, dude… 🥴 That’s a city. At least if they had the refugees be from Hong Kong like you said, yeah, that would make more sense, “Oh, they didn’t want to not be British citizens anymore”. Me: Yeah, it’d be closer to the handover, too. I think they based the cargo ship thing on a 90s incident with a ship from Hong Kong to begin with. Sister: …And that way it’d make more sense for them to be deciding to speak English, too, because at least they'd all know it probably. Why would farmers from Chengdu learn English? Crop fires… (shakes head)
Me: Did you think Dr. Nathan was going to be gone for good? Sister: (sigh) No, she said she would be back didn’t she? So here she is again. ‘Cause she’s got no self respect or whatever… And now she’s attaching herself to prisoners and the source of her trauma and whatever, when really she should just be gone for good, for her own good. What’s she gonna say to her in-laws now? She loves Ryan now, the guy who got their son killed? And do you want her as your doctor, anyway, when clearly she’s got no logical thinking skills? It’s like how you should never trust a priest… Do you really want to listen to that guy promising to absolve you of all your sins? Me: That’s the whole point of priests, though… Sister: No, I mean, the guy in the prison. Me: He’s not a priest, though. He doesn’t do absolution ‘cause he’s not Catholic. Sister: Then what was that thing in the church? When he was doing the little demon whispers with the one guy? Me: That was like… at best, like, pentecostal shit. Sister: Either way. You can’t trust him to get the little demon worms out of your ear when clearly he also was those worms in his ears.

2023 Book Reviews: Fantasy, Part 2
1. At the Feet of the Sun by Victoria Goddard: 4.75/5
Pitch: 2nd in a series; about a bureaucrat running an empire in like the most wholesome fashion
Review: If I didn't already love Cliopher Mdang, I don't think I would have liked this book as much as I did - it felt less well-structured or well-focused than The Hands of the Emperor, which was noticeable because of the 800 pages, and it has a very different plot, more mythological and epic adventure than just the intense character portrait you get in HOTE. But I did already love Kip, so I had a fantastic time with it anyways, just spending some extra time with some characters I love. I really enjoyed getting to see his perspective on other parts of the world, and I'm glad it answered some lingering questions from HOTE. Also, the relationships were fantastic, but personally I wanted something different to happen.
2. Libriomancer by Jim C. Hines: 3.25/5
Pitch: books are magic, literally, and something bad escapes from a book to the real world
Review: I had fun with this, more in the second half than in the first, but I'll be honest that it didn't do as much for me as I'd hoped for. Fun, definitely, and a cool magic system, but as I didn't much care about Isaac by the end, I just wasn't very invested. I probably won't continue on, but I can honestly tell my friend I borrowed it from that I enjoyed it!
3. High Times in the Low Parliament by Kelly Robson: 2/5
Pitch: 18th century London with fae but if Parliament fails to pass a bill endless war will start back up again
Review: At this point, I'm pretty convinced that I don't actually like whimsical books! This is supposed to be whimsical and charming but it just makes me not believe in the characters or the dangers, so there is no tension and I don't like anyone and then I don't like the book.
4. The Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden: 4.5/5
Pitch: 3rd & final book in a trilogy; Russian historical fantasy about the god of winter and the rise of Christianity
Review: I really enjoyed this final installment. Vasya was as captivating as always, and I really enjoyed the way the story echoed her struggle to decide what and who she was in the plot. Plus I cried at the end. I'm glad I finished this series!
5. Babel by R. F. Kuang: 4.75/5
Pitch: dark historical fantasy about colonization in a world where translation is magic
Review: This was extremely well-written, and the ramifications, philosophies, and thoughts that the book digs into are likely to stay with me quite a long time. I can't say that I ever fell headlong in love with any of the characters, though - while I thought they were very compelling and rich characters to explore, there was always a bit of a distance between me and them, so I was aware the whole time that it was a book, rather than being completely sucked in. About halfway through, when the plot kicked up, that did fade somewhat though.
I would recommend this book, although I warn you when you pick it up that terrible and awful things will happen. Just be in the right headspace to read this.

City of Valleys - 25
September Yves “Mitchell Winter Robson.” Yves repeated the name aloud. He flipped through Jake’s notebook numbered six. Jake Roberts was Mitchell Winter Robson. Had Jake been a ‘Jim Smith’, it wouldn’t have perplexed him, but “Mitchell Winter Robson” sang of a whole other culture. Someone called Mitchell Winter Robson could have written the material in the notebooks. Not Jake Roberts. That…

A lawless poacher wants to capture a majestic and rare golden eagle, so he kidnaps the boy who knows where to find the bird. Not to worry — the Rescue Aid Society’s top agents, heroic mice Miss Bianca and Bernard, fly to Australia to save the day. Accompanying the fearless duo are bumbling albatross Wilbur and local field operative Jake the Kangaroo Rat. Credits: TheMovieDb. Film Cast: Bernard (voice): Bob Newhart Miss Bianca (voice): Eva Gabor Wilbur (voice): John Candy Jake (voice): Tristan Rogers Cody (voice): Adam Ryen McLeach (voice): George C. Buck Casting Director: Susan Edelman Art Direction: Pixote Hunt Animation: Vera Pacheco Animation: Aaron Blaise Movie Reviews: CinemaSerf: Now the RAS are clearly not a very global organisation as they have to parachute in (via albatross) “Miss Bianca” and “Bernard” all the way from New York to Australia in search of the missing nine year old “Cody”. What’s happened to him? Well, he happened upon a trapped golden eagle high on a cliff top and released her. Whilst earning her undying affection, he also succeeded in earning the enmity of the bird’s hunter “McLeach”. This man, and his hapless hench-salamander “Joanna” already have a fair amount to species in their underground collection so it now falls to our determined mice and the young boy to free these critters and keep “Marahute” and her three eggs safe from this nasty poacher and his hungry pal. I quite enjoyed this. It plays a little too much to Aussie stereotype now and again, but there is plenty of fun in the adventure with some amiable characterisations – I liked “Joanna” and the rather grumpy koala – as we tear along for a quickly paced and enjoyable sequel to the 1977 story (who knew mice lived that long!?). Nope, you won’t remember it for long – but it passes eighty minutes enjoyably enough.

Erika Footman and Mark Richardson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mark is the touring drummer for Glastonbury headlining and multi platinum winning band Skunk Anansie and formerly with other successful UK rock bands Little Angels and Feeder.
He is a co-founder of the charity, Music Support. The charity helps musicians tackle their struggles with addiction and emotional or mental health issues and, having suffered with his mental health himself, this is a very meaningful pursuit for him. Mark was also involved in Children in Need’s 24 hour drumathon which raised £3,601,138.
Erika’s shows always have an interactive aspect as she has always been interested in the connectivity of music and the power it has to unite large groups of people. She took a literal stance on this when she created her own unique musical instrument by connecting the rope from a kimono to an analogue synthesiser. During a performance at Stockwell Playhouse, she held the rope out to each side of the audience and got everyone to hold hands, essentially making the audience part of the instrument which I think is pretty amazing. She also designed a giant pom pom that’s connected to a wiimote which had been hacked to turn it into a midi trigger. The pom pom is then thrown out into the audience, sending signals to the synth to make sounds, this time making the audience part of the band.
Like I said in his intro paragraph, Mark has toured with multiple successful bands, including Skunk Anansie, our very own Jim’s Little Angels and Feeder. However, he has had the most success with Skunk, with hits like “Hedonism” and “Weak”. They’ve played support shows across the globe with many notable names including Lenny Kravitz, Therapy? and Rammstein. His industry success doesn’t stop there though. He has also had prolific work as a session drummer for Steve Robson, Sunna, Amy Macdonald, Globus, Ace’s solo project, Skin’s solo project, Mel B and Erika.
Now I’d like to talk more about his work with Music Support. The charity was founded in 2015 by Mark, Johan Sorensen, Andy Franks and Matt Thomas, spurred on by the deaths of Amy Winehouse and some good friends. Mark said, “When I tried to get sober in 2000, any information on how to achieve that was rare and hard sought. Almost 60% of entertainment industry workers have sought help for mental health issues and 40% of those have been diagnosed with some form of mental illness. So myself, Johan, Andy and Matt created Music Support. The charity is a non-profit collective of volunteers and professionals providing help and support to individuals in any area of the music industry suffering from addiction, emotional or mental health issues.”
I find both Erika and Mark’s stories to be very uplifting and inspiring with both of their touring successes, Erika’s deep insight on the community spirit of music and Mark’s charity work.
