I've gotten eight more books (I already had three) for my vacation in italy. :) I've been behind on my reading goal for this year, so I figured that since I'll have much much less to do the next two weeks, I should put an effort into getting back on track - and to maybe surpass it.

I'm currently reading 'The Mysterious Affair At Styles' by Agatha Christie, which I will be completing on my way there. The other eleven books on my list are:

Welcome to the Tournament of the hottest boy band members of the 80s/90s

It was inspired by all the tournaments pitting famous beautiful people versus famous beautiful people of specific eras and specific jobs. The polls should start on the 8th of April, leaving around two weeks for submissions. I’ve compiled a list already but you can submit other boys that aren’t on the list through a google form. Feel free to submit non english speaking boy bands.

Liberating the Mirage

Summary:

When an assignment goes horribly wrong, Mulder has to race against time to find Scully.

But sometimes the line between reality and illusion blurs—and it turns out there’s more than one locked door that needs to be opened.

Notes:

This is my little contribution to Fictober, a yearly event that celebrates writing and reading—and fall. All of which are good things in my world.

Since there’s no way I can come up with a new story every day, I’ve decided to write one fic that includes all prompts from the Fictober 2023 prompt list. They’re all in bold if you want to seek them out specifically. You can find the list here: Fictober 2023

This story is complete, but to keep in the spirit of Fictober, I’m posting one chapter a day.

Chapter 2: More Than Meets the Eye

J. Edgar Hoover Building, Washington, D.C. FBI Headquarters A.D. Skinner’s office

Mulder planted his hands firmly on his hips and moved closer to Skinner, only the desk keeping the two men apart.

“How the hell could this happen?” he demanded angrily. “We had all the exits covered.”

Skinner met Mulder’s glare without flinching. “I don’t know, Agent Mulder. We had a whole team on it, and we’ve been watching Connolly for a month,” he answered sternly. “I will make sure to have this reviewed thoroughly. But right now our main concern should be to find Agent Scully. And you need to stay away! You're too close to this!”

Mulder took a shaky breath and started pacing. “These are some of the most dangerous men in the country! They’re not going to play around, sir. It took us a month to find out about this meeting, even though we’d been watching their every move! Do you know what this means?” He turned around and stepped around the desk, facing the Assistant Director. Skinner looked at him without flinching.

All of a sudden, Mulder felt as though all of his anger was draining out of him. He rasped his palm along his jaw as he impatiently stroked his three o’clock shadow. “How are we going to find her in time?” he asked desperately, moving even closer to Skinner.

“We are going to find her, Mulder,” Skinner replied. There wasn't a trace of uncertainty in his voice. “I'm not going to give up on Agent Scully. We knew what Connolly had for breakfast and when he last called his mother. And we will find out how they could escape. We have a few ideas where they could be hiding.”

Mulder closed his eyes warily and took a step back, his shoulders sagging in exhaustion. “What if we’re wrong?”

Skinner lowered his eyes to his desk. “We can’t afford to be wrong, Mulder. Let’s focus on finding Agent Scully.” He looked back up at his agent with a compassionate look. “I understand, Agent Mulder.”

Mulder angrily raised his head and glared at his boss. “No, you don’t understand, sir. She was only captured because I let him escape. This would’ve never happened if I had gone right after him when he ran for the door. Instead, I wasted my time on that worthless thug!” He turned around and started pacing again, his fists still firmly planted on his hips.

“Agent! This is not helping to bring Agent Scully back!” Skinner said loudly. “Let’s focus on the van she was in. We managed to trace the signal from her microphone for two miles before we lost contact. They were heading northeast. And we also now know who Eddie Connolly’s boss is. His name is John Egan. He’s been on our radar for a while, we could just never pin anything on him. This time we’ll get him. I’ve got all the agents available combing the area, knocking on every door.”

Mulder snorted. “That’s all? Easy,” he said sarcastically.

Skinner took a deep breath. “I never said it would be easy. And if you don’t stop now —” he started.

Mulder closed his eyes and stopped pacing. “Well, I can’t wait for you. I can’t just sit around and hope someone will find her. I’m going to check out where we lost…” his voice cracked, “where he took her.”

He turned away from Skinner and took a few determined steps towards the door.

“Mulder,” Skinner said softly, placing his palms on his desk as if to hold himself up, “we’re going to find her.”

Mulder stopped without turning around. “I hope you’re right, sir. I hope you’re right.”

Pearson Steel Corp., Washington, D.C. Basement

Scully groaned and slowly turned her head to the side. She deliberately moved first her right hand, then her left to test their mobility against the handcuffs securing her wrists. Struggling to free her right hand, it was no use. All she accomplished was rubbing her wrist raw while the cuffs refused to loosen.

With a sigh, she tried to turn on her side to get as comfortable as possible. A wave of dizziness hit her, and she had to close her eyes to not throw up. Deep breath in, she thought. Just concentrate on breathing. Thankfully, her stomach settled a bit, but her heart kept pounding wildly. She tried to open her eyes again to figure out where she was, but instead, brightly colored lights started to whirl behind her closed eyelids.

She took several more shallow breaths through her mouth and concentrated on her surroundings. In the distance, she could hear a steady clink of water hitting a metallic surface. Apart from that, it was eerily silent.

She turned her cheek slightly downwards and her cheek met with a cool, soft surface. She was lying on an old mattress—without a sheet or blanket—and she shivered a bit in the cold room. Carefully, she pried her eyes open, preparing herself for getting sick again, but her roiling stomach had calmed down a bit. Attentively, she took in her surroundings, a basement of sorts. Stone walls and a window close to the ceiling let in some late afternoon light. Iron bars kept out everyone who wanted to get inside. Or anyone inside who wanted to get out in, she thought resignedly.

The only thing in the room besides herself was the mattress she was lying on. She turned her head around a bit, trying to find a door. The nausea hit her like a fist again, and she closed her eyes immediately against wave after wave of queasiness. The dancing spots behind her eyes increased in speed and started to circle against the back of her eyelids. Bright red and yellow spots and lines moved up and down. Closer—and away again. She followed their pretty patterns with rapt attention, and all of a sudden, it didn’t seem so bad anymore. She smiled drowsily, and her thoughts felt sluggish like they were trying to walk through honey.

Drugged, the rational part of her brain helpfully provided. It doesn’t matter, she thought, and smiled at the beautiful colors that swirled around her, making her feel happy and relaxed. Lying here was kind of nice, she contemplated. In the back of her mind, she knew she should remember something important, something she was supposed to be doing. But it didn’t come to her, and she shook her head indifferently. It probably wasn’t relevant, she thought, before focusing back on the swirling colors.

Suddenly, a familiar voice broke through her hazy thoughts. “Scully!”

She frowned. Mulder? What was Mulder doing here? Maybe he wanted to watch the pretty lights with her! She grinned excitedly.

“Mulder!” she called into the room without opening her eyes. “Mulder, can you see it too? Isn't it beautiful?”

“Scully, you need to listen to me!” His voice cut through her hazy thoughts, and she tried to find him in between all the colors she could see behind her closed eyes. She frowned. That didn’t seem right. If her eyes were closed, she couldn’t find Mulder. And she wanted to find him. He always made her happy. Well, not always. Sometimes he was driving her crazy. But even when he made her mad, she was always happy when he was there. She wanted to see Mulder!

Reluctantly, she opened her eyes. Her surroundings remained blurry. Where was he? She looked around, but the room was empty. “Mulder?” she called. “Mulder, where are you?”

“I’m looking for you, Scully. Don’t give up! I’m going to come and get you out of there.”

Scully smiled. “Are we playing a game?” she asked excitedly, until she realized that she couldn’t move all that much. The corners of her mouth dropped. “Stop playing hide and seek, Mulder. I can’t play. Where are you?”

“Did he hurt you, Scully?”

Scully frowned. “No, I don’t think so. Please, tell me where you are, Mulder.”

He didn’t answer, and she felt her eyes well up with tears. “Mulder? Mulder! Why are you hiding? And this better be good,” she yelled agitatedly. Her only answer was silence.

Tiredly, she closed her eyes. Mulder wasn't there. But now she remembered what she had forgotten earlier. She needed to get out of here! That was it! She tried to sit up a bit, but every movement felt like she had to fight a weight lying on her chest, pressing her down. She let out a breath and relaxed into the mattress. She’d try again later, and she would think of something, and then she’d get out of here—if only thinking wasn’t so exhausting.

She felt a wave of fatigue sweep over her when the door behind her opened with a loud bang. Her eyes flew open, and she turned around, fighting the nausea once more.

Two men dressed all in black entered the room and quickly walked over to the mattress she was lying on. She tried to sit up once more, but one of the men pressed her down with a hand on her shoulder. Scully squinted her eyes to see his face. She recognized him immediately. It was the man who had kidnapped her in the van.

“Lie down!” he said forcefully. “We need to talk to you.” Scully stopped resisting and wordlessly returned his look. She needed to preserve her energy. And fighting against two men while she was tied up and drugged would deplete her resources pretty quickly, she figured.

“I see nothing has changed,” he laughed. “I don’t think we will need these anymore, do we?” he asked, pushing against her shoulder to roll her onto her side. He swiftly unlocked the handcuffs with a small key and rolled her back over so she could see him. Scully kept silent.

“Okay, let's be clear about something here. We are not playing around. And I think you know that. Don't you, Agent Scully? I think you know who we are. So you've got one chance to answer us!” the man demanded. His face was flushed in anger, and his lips were pressed together tightly.

Scully kept returning his gaze, but the swirling circles and colorful spots behind her eyes made it difficult to focus. “I don’t know who you are or what you want from me,” she said, fighting the bile rising in her throat. “Why did you drug me?”

The man’s features relaxed, and all of a sudden he seemed relieved. He signaled to the other man without turning around by snapping his fingers.

Scully turned her head to the side and tried to focus on the other man in the room—and recognized him immediately. Eddie Connolly. Of course, she thought warily. He must’ve escaped as well. But if he was here, where was Mulder? And what had happened that these men could escape? Her heart sank, and she felt a cold shiver run down her spine. Had she just heard Mulder because he was dead? Like when her father had died?

The world started to spin around her. No. That couldn’t be true. Not like that. Not in a standard run-of-the-mill tactical mission they’d only had to join because they needed to get their annual tactical assignment over with before getting back to the X-Files, she thought. She refused to believe that Mulder was dead.

Connolly returned with a wooden chair and placed it in the middle of the room before returning to stand silently by the door.

The tall man put one of his feet on the seat of the chair and watched Scully. “You don’t know me. I see. Just call me John then. As in John Doe!” he laughed hysterically at his own joke. When Scully didn’t react, he turned serious again, his eyes forming small slits. “What does the FBI want from me? Why were you observing us?”

Scully stared back without answering. John violently jerked his foot off the chair and kicked it hard, so it tumbled over. “I’m done playing games! Answer me!” he yelled.

Scully’s mind was a whirl of thoughts. She tried to focus and make a decision on how to proceed. She needed to get out of there, but it felt like she wasn’t even really here. She felt like she was dreaming.

With a final glare at her, John snipped his fingers at Connolly. “It seems our guest isn’t aware that she doesn’t have a choice here. Get me the syringe again!”

Scully’s eyes widened. “Look, I’m a medical doctor. What did you inject me with? It can be dangerous to drug someone without knowing their medical history. An overdose can easily…,” she began desperately.

“Shut up! Honestly, why would I care? You had your chance! You wanted to play, now we’re playing!” John shouted and grabbed the syringe Connolly was holding out to him.

Scully held up her hands soothingly. “Wait! This won’t be necessary, John. You kidnapped an FBI agent. Don’t make it worse. If you kill me, they’ll never stop hunting you down!” she said urgently, moving her hand as if to stop him.

John lowered the syringe and took a step closer. “Fine, explain it to me then. What does the FBI want from me!?”

Scully took a deep breath, the relief making her light-headed for a moment. “We were watching the warehouse because we knew that there was to be a meeting planned for tonight,” she said.

“Who told you that? Who’s your contact? What do you know about that meeting!” John asked and moved even closer to her. He was completely focused on her, and she could see that his pulse point was beating erratically.

Scully bent away as far as she could get, but it didn’t do much. He was still towering over her, lying on the mattress.

“Do I look like I knew that? I was just on the tactical team. I don’t know anything about the details,” she lied.

John grunted, clearly frustrated. He pulled her badge out of his back pocket and showed it to her. “Here it says you’re a special agent. Are you telling me you don’t know what you were supposed to look for?” he asked threateningly.

Scully nodded. “I was supposed to wait outside in the van. That’s all.”

John stared at her, his eyes bouncing all over her face, trying to determine whether she was telling the truth. Scully looked right back at him, not shying away from his intense gaze.

With a curse, he stood up straight and moved back to the exit. “This isn’t over,” he said without turning back around. “If you can’t tell me who betrayed me, I’ll find a different way!” He grabbed Connolly and forcefully shoved him out of the door. “See you later, Agent Scully!” he said coldly and slammed the door shut.

Scully heard the lock turn and warily closed her eyes. She was left in silence again. Her head was pounding like crazy now, and she licked her dry lips. Uncertainty and determination warred within her, and she tried to get comfortable on the mattress. At least she could move her hands now, she reasoned, wiggling her wrists experimentally. Maybe some rest would help, she mused, twisting herself into a fetal position to stay as warm as possible. Maybe she’d wake up, and it had all been a dream, she thought drowsily before sleep finally claimed her.

“The future belonged to the showy and the promiscuous”: Why the 21st Century Loves Edith Wharton

If ever there were a good time to read the American writer Edith Wharton (1862-1937), who published over forty books across four decades, it’s now. Since the Wharton revival of the late 20th century, when directors were adapting (the Pulitzer-Prize winning) The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, The Buccaneers, and The House of Mirth, her star has continued to rise. As I yesterday prepared to teach The Custom of the Country, which many have called Wharton’s greatest novel, a friend texted me Sofia Coppola’s article on the surprising appeal of its social-climbing heroine. Coppola is developing Undine Spragg’s story for Apple TV. A kind of Gilded Age Material Girl, Undine has been ready for her close-up for years.

Coppola joins an impressive roster of contemporary admirers of Wharton that includes Roxane Gay, Laura Bush, Lisa Lucas, Peggy Noonan, Jennifer Egan, Stephin Merritt, Claire Messud, Meg Wolitzer, Mindy Kaling, Doug Hughes, Brandon Taylor, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Ali Benjamin, Vendela Vida, Ottessa Moshfegh, and Kristin Hannah. At a time when publishing houses are compelled to scale back, new editions of Wharton’s books are appearing in print with introductions by Coppola, Egan, and Taylor.

Those who think they don’t know Wharton might be surprised to learn they do. A reverence for Wharton’s writings informs Sex and the City (whose pilot welcomes us to “the Age of Un-Innocence”), Gossip Girl, Downtown Abbey (whose “Lady Edith” suggests a nod to Wharton), and HBO’s The Gilded Age which, like Downton, is created by the Wharton-appreciating Julian Fellowes. His Bertha and George, after all, are named for the power couple from The House of Mirth.  

But why Wharton? Why now? Perhaps it’s because for all its new technologies, conveniences, and modes of travel and communication, our own “Gilded Age” is a lot like hers. For the post-war and post-flu-epidemic climate that engendered The Age of Innocence is not far removed from our post-COVID-19 reality. In both historical moments, citizens of the world have witnessed a retreat into conservativism and a rise of white supremacy. Fringe groups like the “Proud Boys” and “QAnon” and deniers of everything from the coronavirus to climate change and Sandy Hook are invited to the table in the name of free speech, and here Wharton’s distrust of false narratives resonates particularly well. Post-9/11 calls for patriotism and the alignment of the American flag with one political party harken back to Wharton’s poignant questioning, in a 1919 letter, of the compulsion to profess national allegiance:

how much longer are we going to think it necessary to be “American” before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, & having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries?[i]

Her cosmopolitan critique of nationalist fervor remains instructive to us today.

Edith Wharton seems to have foreseen the excesses, obsessions, and spectacles of our current moment. The scandals documented in Wharton’s narratives serve as harbingers of the sensations that flash across our hand-held screens. Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking touches on the same nerve as the sexual exploitation of minors in Wharton’s Summer (1917) and The Children (1928). The quid pro quo run-in between Wharton’s Lily Bart and Gus Trenor looks uncomfortably forward to Harvey Weinstein and #MeToo. The rise to power of Donald Trump would not surprise Edith Wharton.

Wharton’s tenacious Undine Spragg—as horrifying to progressive era readers as she is admired by Generation Z—can be conceived of as the original social media influencer conscious of her brand. For Undine and her creator know that “the future belonged to the showy and the promiscuous”[ii] and that the turn-of-the-century “world where conspicuousness passed for distinction”[iii] foreshadows our own. Wharton would describe Undine in terms we might use for a “Real Housewife of Park Avenue”: “If only everyone would do as she wished she would never be unreasonable” (162). Undine’s world encourages her to aspire to the rank of trophy wife and the sexual double standard dictating that “genius is of small use to a woman who does not know how to do her hair”[iv] would apply to Wharton herself who, on the 150th anniversary of her birth, would be assessed by a male novelist in terms of how she sizes up to Grace Kelly or Jackie Kennedy.[v]  The writer who would declare, in her wildly popular interior design manual The Decoration of Houses, privacy “one of the first requisites of civilized life”[vi] would be appalled by what is broadcast across social media. Wharton also would’ve anticipated the racism directed at Meghan Markle and why granting Oprah an interview would not help relations with her spouse’s family. Children forcibly separated from families due to morally dubious immigration policies echo the plight of war refugees for whose welfare Edith Wharton labored, while the distrust of the cultural other echoes the writer’s own complicated nationalist allegiances.[vii]  

Ten years ago, Lev Raphael took the temperature of Wharton studies declaring in the Huffington Post: “Edith Wharton is hot.” She is now positively on fire. I offer below a short excerpt from the introduction to The Bloomsbury Handbook to Edith Wharton, which appears in print today.

The writer is in her element: she cradles in her lap her beloved dogs, she sits outdoors at a well-appointed property she lovingly transformed, she surrounds herself with fashionably dressed cosmopolitans, and she smiles. The moment validates an idea expressed in The Age of Innocence: that “the air of ideas is the only air worth breathing.” As host, Wharton, by this point an internationally acclaimed artist, has brought together representatives of an admiring generation from diverse backgrounds that would outlive and perhaps learn from her. That sunlit terrace is doing something we hope this book will do: provide a foundation for future conversations with Edith Wharton at the center.

Around the time this photograph was taken, Wharton would reflect in A Backward Glance that “[t]he world is a welter and has always been one; but though all the cranks and the theorists cannot master the old floundering monster, . . . here and there a saint or a genius suddenly sends a little ray through the fog, and helps humanity to stumble on, and perhaps up” (379). Wharton’s writings arguably send a ray and help humanity stumble on and up in our own Gilded Age. It is the aim of this collection of essays, produced by leaders in the field at a time of global crisis, to make a meaningful contribution to the scholarship on and dialogue about the work of Edith Wharton and to open up new possibilities for understanding and embracing a writer whose corpus is as enormous as it is resonant. To borrow from Wharton’s preface to her anthology The Book of the Homeless (1916), in which she conceives of her volume, as she so often does, as a house: “You will see from the names of the builders what a gallant piece of architecture it is. . . . So I efface myself from the threshold and ask you to walk in.”[viii]

There were certain things he couldn’t do anymore. Certain things he couldn’t take. And one of them was sitting still. After- well, after, there had been talk of sending him back stateside. Buck had headed back to Wyoming soon as V-E Day and went, and Bucky was right behind him. That was, before the goddamned Docs put a stop to it. As they so helpfully pointed out, Buck had had time to recover. Had been fed and watered and was back to looking like a real human being in between his rescue and his transfer back to East Anglia. Not so with Bucky. According to medical personal on base, Bucky wasn’t going to be able to go anywhere for at least six months. See, Bucky was down to 125 lbs, half his teeth had rotted out somewhere between Bremen and Berlin, he had sores all on his feet infected and peeling from frostbite, and to top it all off he had what the Docs were calling “mono-nueropathy of the upper limb” which really just meant that his left arm kept fucking twitching. Wouldn’t goddamn stay still. All of this combined meant that Bucky himself would have to stay still. And for a long time.

It was killing him, honest to God. Buck had given him a sort of sympathetic look before he was set to leave, standing awkward by his bedside. Like he was asking John for forgiveness. For what, he couldn’t be quite sure. For leaving maybe. But it seemed lately like Buck was always leaving. Those last few months marching from one camp to the next, he had started to forget Buck’s face. The color of his eyes. The way his eyebrow would twitch when he thought something was especially funny. All he could remember was the back of his head, gleaming and golden and leaving him. Always, always leaving. But that’s how it was, wasn’t it? With people like him. Unnatural, too loud, too brash, cloying and clinging and desperate for an ounce of human touch or feeling. It never worked. No matter what he did. Whether he was loud or quiet, strong or weak, joyful or stoic. He’d made himself into a million different men between the time of his birth and the time of his discharge from the military hospital, and none of them had ever warranted anything but the back of some poor fucker’s head. He’d had a lot of time to think on that, while recovering. He’d heard the boys in the middle of the night cry out, and he’d try and pace with his stupid fucking feet, and he’d stare out the windows as the nurses fussed over him, and he’d think. About Buck. About Leaving. About Home. About what any of it all meant now that he’d survived. What were you supposed to do, after you had spent years sure you would die, trying desperately to do anything you could to survive? What did it mean to live after all of that? It seemed to Bucky like everyone around him had it figured out. Everyone but him.

He wasn’t pathetic enough to follow Gale to Wyoming. He’d had a letter delivered two weeks before his release about the wedding. And that was great. Real great. He wanted to be angry, but he knew he wouldn’t have come to the thing even if he’d been able to, even if the wedding had been held off until he could walk on his own two feet. They were young, and in love, Gale and Marge, like two fucking little Dresden Dolls, perfect happy life perfect happy family. He would have ruined it anyways. And now there was no place for him. All those nights, the soft brush of a hand in his hair, whispering, love you, Buck, love you, and never once hearing it in return. There was no place for him there. They discharged him in April 1946, after months of grueling recovery and only a handful of letters, and he headed out for somewhere. Somewhere else.

From the top deck of the boat, crowded on all sides, he could feel the breeze in his hair, and it didn’t feel like freedom should have. It just felt like more nothing.

He was back on Peleliu in the dream, for some reason. Sid was above him, blood leaking from his open mouth. He hadn’t known what to do. He tried to call for a Corpsman, but the words wouldn’t come. He couldn’t move his arms couldn’t move his legs just the oppressive heat drowning him. And then he’d felt fingers in his mouth, and he’d looked up, and there was Merriell, his glacier blue eyes wide with unhinged glee, a knife in hand, tearing out his back molar. He tried to scream, tried to tell him. It’s me. It’s me. But the image shifted. And instead of Merriell it was him, Eugene, grinning at him beneath the pelting rain. He pulled out his own teeth, one by one, his face in an approximation of a smile, laughing, and then-

He woke up silently. He couldn’t help it if he tried. The memory of that noise, the shovel hitting the poor fucker whose name he never learnt, the memory wouldn’t let him ever get to anything but a choked out whine in his sleep. No matter how bad the dreams got. His mind knew, vaguely, that he was back home. But his body was still on that airfield, in the middle of a warm wet hell, saying, “It was him or us.”

He wasn’t gonna be able to sleep. So instead he wandered downstairs, watching the sun rise through the curtains. College, of course, had been a bust. He was technically on break and set to return in the fall, but he knew deep down he wasn’t going back. Couldn’t stand to look in the eyes of people his age and see souls lurking back there. The resentment within him bubbled up each time he saw souls that still lived and breathed and hadn’t been left back with a crying baby in Okinawa. And besides, he couldn't stand their smug indifference, as if any of them knew what it had been like in the thick of it. Half of them hadn’t even served, and the other half kept talking about the European Theatre like it meant something to him. They’d been back home for a year before he’d had an inkling of returning to the waking world, and it showed. While they celebrated Hitler’s defeat he was in a foxhole being shot at, losing his humanity inch by inch.

Part of him wanted to go to New Orleans. To ask why. Why. Why wasn’t he good enough for Merriell? Why did he leave him there, sleeping, on that train bound for Alabama? Part of him wanted to run down the street to Sid and Mary’s house and start screaming at the both of them. “I used to fuck your husband! I used to fuck him! He didn’t warn me. And now it was all too late. He wouldn’t go back to school. And he’d been trying to survive for so long he couldn’t kill himself. And he couldn’t stand the thought of New Orleans and the rejection he’d find there. And going to Sid’s was really just a funny little fantasy, something to indulge in when he was feeling real low and wanted to cry for the sake of crying. There was nowhere left to go, nowhere really. And he couldn’t stay here.

The urge to flee came inside of him and started tapping at the walls of his chest. He had to get out of Mobile. He had to leave, now.

In his room he spent an hour packing the essentials. His Bible from the War tucked into his back pocket. A few changes of clothes. Soap and a razor and a second pair of shoes. A book by Eliot. It was funny. Before the war, he always thought Eliot was a real sop. Could never get into the lilting rhymes. But now, it seemed reading Four Quartets or Alfred Prufrock was the only thing that could get him to calm down when the noise reached unbearable levels inside his own head.

There was only one thing for it, really. New York. The idea called to him, deep in his bones. He could feel it. He could belong in New York. He could be as inverted as he wanted to be and no one would bat an eye if he picked the right neighborhood. He could hide among the faces of strangers and forget that the word sledgehammer existed in the English dictionary. It would be like Peking. Which he had learned to love so dearly. The noise and the beautiful tonal language, the bright lights and the rickshaws. Maybe he’d move to Chinatown even. He knew the language alright, and he’d never felt as at home as when he was dining with one of the host families last winter. Yes. Yes. This would be good. This would be a fresh start.

He left a letter to his parents. He didn’t want to give it more thought than it needed. A swift separation was for the best. It was only a matter of time before they too got sick of him, and sent him to the hospital, having seen the weakness and the black ooze at the heart of him.

By noon he was on a train headed due North, set to run into the open embrace of a new city. Set to run straight into the back of one John Egan.

"Inevitable" comes from the song of the same name from The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, and "Moment" is a reference to the song, "At this Moment" by Billy Vera and the Beaters, the anthem of one of my OTPs, Alex and Ellen from Family Ties.

3) What is your middle name?

Grace. But if I ever use it for an OC, I'm not trying to self-insert. It's just a very common name. My mom baby-sat two girls from different families for about eleven years, and their middle names were Grace, as well.

4) If you could be any mythical creature, what would you be?

I don't know... I'd say mermaid, but

Teal or pastel yellow, but I also love sage green or a good pale blue. And, obviously pink, but teal is like my top favorite color.
