The remains of an ancient planet lie deep within Earth

In the 1980s, geophysicists made a startling discovery: two continent-sized blobs of unusual material were found deep near the center of the Earth, one beneath the African continent and one beneath the Pacific Ocean. Each blob is twice the size of the Moon and likely composed of different proportions of elements than the mantle surrounding it.

Where did these strange blobs—formally known as large low-velocity provinces (LLVPs)—come from? A new study led by Caltech researchers suggests that they are remnants of an ancient planet that violently collided with Earth billions of years ago in the same giant impact that created our Moon.

The study, published in the journal Nature on November 1, also proposes an answer to another planetary science mystery. Researchers have long hypothesized that the Moon was created in the aftermath of a giant impact between Earth and a smaller planet dubbed Theia, but no trace of Theia has ever been found in the asteroid belt or in meteorites. This new study suggests that most of Theia was absorbed into the young Earth, forming the LLVPs, while residual debris from the impact coalesced into the Moon.

The research was led by Qian Yuan, O.K. Earl Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate in the laboratories of both Paul Asimow (MS '93, PhD '97), the Eleanor and John R. McMillan Professor of Geology and Geochemistry; and Michael Gurnis, the John E. And Hazel S. Smits Professor of Geophysics and Clarence R. Allen Leadership Chair, director of Caltech’s Seismological Laboratory, and director of the Schmidt Academy for Software Engineering at Caltech.

Scientists first discovered the LLVPs by measuring seismic waves traveling through the earth. Seismic waves travel at different speeds through different materials, and in the 1980s, the first hints emerged of large-scale three-dimensional variations deep within the structure of Earth. In the deepest mantle, the seismic wave pattern is dominated by the signatures of two large structures near the Earth's core that researchers believe possess an unusually high level of iron. This high iron content means the regions are denser than their surroundings, causing seismic waves passing through them to slow down and leading to the name "large low velocity provinces." 

Yuan, a geophysicist by training, was attending a seminar about planet formation given by Mikhail Zolotov, a professor at Arizona State University, in 2019. Zolotov presented the giant-impact hypothesis, while Qian noted that the Moon is relatively rich in iron. Zolotov added that no trace had been found of the impactor that must have collided with the Earth.

"Right after Mikhail had said that no one knows where the impactor is now, I had a 'eureka moment' and realized that the iron-rich impactor could have transformed into mantle blobs," says Yuan.

Yuan worked with multidisciplinary collaborators to model different scenarios for Theia's chemical composition and its impact with Earth. The simulations confirmed that the physics of the collision could have led to the formation of both the LLVPs and the Moon. Some of Theia's mantle could have become incorporated into the Earth's own, where it ultimately clumped and crystallized together to form the two distinct blobs detectable today at Earth's core–mantle boundary today; other debris from the collision mixed together to form the Moon.

Given such a violent impact, why did Theia's material clump into the two distinct blobs instead of mixing together with the rest of the forming planet? The researchers' simulations showed that much of the energy delivered by Theia's impact remained in the upper half of the mantle, leaving Earth’s lower mantle cooler than estimated by earlier, lower-resolution impact models. Because the lower mantle was not totally melted by the impact, the blobs of iron-rich material from Theia stayed largely intact as they sifted down to the base of the mantle, like the colored masses of paraffin wax in a turned-off lava lamp. Had the lower mantle been hotter (that is, if it had received more energy from the impact), it would have mixed more thoroughly with the iron-rich material, like the colors in a stirred pot of paints.

The next steps are to examine how the early presence of Theia's heterogeneous material deep within the earth might have influenced our planet's interior processes, such as plate tectonics.

"A logical consequence of the idea that the LLVPs are remnants of Theia is that they are very ancient," Asimow says. "It makes sense, therefore, to investigate next what consequences they had for Earth's earliest evolution, such as the onset of subduction before conditions were suitable for modern-style plate tectonics, the formation of the first continents, and the origin of the very oldest surviving terrestrial minerals."

The paper is titled "Moon-forming impactor as a source of Earth's basal mantle anomalies." Qian Yuan is the first author. In addition to Yuan and Asimow, the additional Caltech coauthor is Yoshinori Miyazaki, Stanback Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate in Comparative Planetary Evolution. Additional coauthors are Mingming Li, Steven Desch, and Edward Garnero (PhD '94) of Arizona State University (ASU); Byeongkwan Ko of ASU and Michigan State University; Hongping Deng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Travis Gabriel of the U.S. Geological Survey; Jacob Kegerreis of NASA’s Ames Research Center; and Vincent Eke of Durham University. Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation, the O.K. Earl Postdoctoral Fellowship at Caltech, the U.S. Geological Survey, NASA, and the Caltech Center for Comparative Planetary Evolution.

Cyberpunk 2077: Johnny is Pistis Sophia

Disclaimer: I wrote my analysis based on Book I. XI Volume of Nag Hammadi Studies, edited by Schmidt, C. and translated by Macdermot, V. in 1978. I'm not a Gnostic and I don't have credentials in this matter. For terminology I've placed links to outside sources.

Basics first.

Pistis Sophia, aside of being an abandoned hotel in Cyberpunk 2077, is a Gnostic text, supposedly written between 3rd and 4rd centuries AD. It's divided into four books, with only first two directly following each other, and academics are convinced the whole content comes from multiple sources.

The text's title is also a name of feminine Aeon who ought to form a pair with another to become Syzygy (Syzygoi), which in Greek means "conjunction, yoked together"…

And that's where plot of Cyberpunk comes to play.

Pistis Sophia fell into disgrace after or simultaneously being deceived by Authades, masculine Aeon, who grew jealous of Sophia's will to worship the Light rather than continuing the known ways of Aeons. Authades' doings led Sophia into realm of Chaos, in hopes she loses power. How? By manipulating Sophia to transform into Syzygy on her own. As you can probably guess, it went wrong. Horribly wrong. Luckily, someone heard Sophia's call and rescued her.

Now let's look at our rockerboy, Johnny Silverhand. From TTRPG and 2077's lore we know he deserted from military and spent whole three months in the hotel Pistis Sophia, eyes fixed on a fan and scruffy ceiling. Robert John Linder back then, he named himself Johnny Silverhand and swore to be someone new. Except he, just like Sophia, was completely alone at this very moment. It's no secret we humans are the worst judges when it comes to ourselves, our existence is dependable on others. Johnny's not an exception.

Therefore, all Silverhand's royal fuck-ups are no secret. His life, even post mortem, is c-h-a-o-t-i-c with capital C.

Aeon I mentioned before, Pistis Sophia, received help from — better buckle up, chooms — Jesus Christ. The catch is: she had no idea it was him. Sophia prayed all the time* for help to the Treasury of Light, not knowing it belongs to the same deity. That's literally the only reason she found salvation in the first place.

If we look at the relationship between Johnny and V, technically speaking they're the same person. Johnny saves V all the time… or does he? After finally reading that Gnostic text on my own — I'd say it's the other way around.

Johnny Silverhand is Pistis Sophia, while V is Jesus Christ to him.

Think about it. Johnny has I, me, myself attitude. He's socially awkward and arrogant, I could almost swear for sometime of the story he'd rather be returned to Mikoshi than to admit to anyone V affects him (*coughs* Panam's story line *coughs*). Doesn't change much even during that segment of Tapeworm quest.

Johnny's convinced it is HIM who HELPS us, it is HIM who CHANGES us, it HIM who PLAYS Pistis Sophia scenario in front of our eyes. What he does forget is that he and V are the same person to the rest of the world.

Moreover, unfortunately for Johnny, he's not completely honest with not just us, but himself in his former hotel room. He hadn't found his Light yet, and he's scared. The first thing he does after V surrenders their body, is getting himself wasted. Conversation with Rogue seems to be an afterthought. What I really appreciate about this moment, is how V knows it isn't going to end well for their health, yet agrees to help. They call Johnny out on his bullshit later, but y'know… holding someone accountable for wrongdoings can be an act of love.

If it wasn't for V, Johnny most likely would still "sleep" in Mikoshi, not able to reunite with old friends, without any chance to try redeem himself. V got Silverhand out of a really dark place, similarly to Christ towards Sophia.

When visiting Oil Fields, shall you pick the line "Here likes Johnny Silverhand, the guy who saved my life", after a moment of thoughtful silence Johnny responds "V… You don't know how much I want that to be true". He knows the reality is different. He accepts it, wishing he actually helped us like we helped him. Feels grateful and sincere. At least I interpreted his [body] language that way.

But because it's Cyberpunk, we can only dream of happy ending for everyone involved.

EDWARDSVILLE – The Madison County Board took the step Wednesday night to pass a resolution that places a nonbinding advisory referendum regarding separating Chicago and Cook County from the rest of the state of Illinois. The referendum will be on the ballot for Madison County voters on Nov. 5.  The board passed the resolution by a 15-7 vote with little explanation from board members for supporting it. Voting in favor were Fred Michael, Stacey Pace, Frank Dickerson, Valerie Doucleff, Michael Turner, Robert Pollard, Mike Babcock, Terry Eaker, Mob Meyer, Denise Wiehardt, John Janek, Ryan Kneedler, Paul Nicolussi and Chris Guy. Pollard was the only Democrat to vote in favor of the resolution.  Most of the people voting in favor of the resolution gave no reason Wednesday night for their support of the resolution. Dickerson, R-Worden, and Eaker, R-Bethalto, both said voters in their districts were “overwhelmingly” in support of the referendum.

Voting no were Michael “Doc” Holliday, Bill Stoutenborough, Shawndell Wilson, Matt King, Victor Valentine, Alison Lamothe, and Nick Petrillo. Bobby Ross, Mick Madison, and Charles “Skip” Schmidt were absent. “I’m amazed this issue has come as far as it has,” Stoutenborough said. Stoutenborough said the idea of splitting the state was unpatriotic, a theme of several people during public speaking, and he stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, with some others on the board joining him. Stoutenborough tried to table the issue, but that motion failed by a vote of 12-10. The referendum will read “Shall the board of Madison County correspond with the boards of other counties of Illinois, outside of Cook County, about the possibility of separating from Cook County to form a new state and to seek admission to the Union as such, subject to the approval of the people?”

Last night, the GOP majority on the Madison County Board voted 15-7 on a nearly party-line vote to put the unpatriotic and economically ruinous separation referendum on the ballot in the November election. Robert Pollard was the lone Dem to vote in favor of putting it on the ballot.

The referendum is a symbolic vote, and I hope people vote against it come November.

New Fiction 2022 - December

The Chimes at Midnight by Geoff Trowbridge (2008)

It takes its time to get to the meat until there’s more to chew on in the latter half. Most of these TOS alternate histories were mildly interesting but this one is a cut above.

A Gutted World by Keith R.A. DeCandido (2008)

"What if the Cardassians discovered the Bajoran Wormhole?" This is the question that got me reading all these Myriad Universes novellas in the first place, but because I’m me and a completionist, I couldn’t just skip past the others in the series to get here. I come to Star Trek expanded universe stuff with a DS9 first approach so I was keen to read how the author spun out this alternate history in which the Dominion gets their foothold in the alpha quadrant if they met the Cardassians first. It had a little too much TNG cast for my taste (especially since those characters dominate so many of these stories), but it’s a worthy DS9 tale.

Brave New World by Chris Roberson (2008)

Now we get to a whole lot of Data, so more of TNG. The courtroom stuff doesn’t hit the same way in these stories as it does in the TV episodes, and then all the implications of androids woven into the fabric of the galaxy is strangely not that compelling.

The Embrace of Cold Architects by David R. George III (2010)

Another Data-heavy story. I think these novellas introduce interesting directions with how the Federation will absolutely exploit artificial beings if they have the slightest excuse, but this particular one needed to be its own novel. It ends just as things get interesting.

The Tears of Eridanus by Steve Mollmann & Michael Schuster (2010)

A TOS story that deviates from the prime universe thousands of years before the era we know. It revels in an alternate history in which the Andorians made first contact with Earth, and the Vulcans and Romulans never parted ways.

The Last Generation by Andrew Steven Harris, Gordon Purcell, Bob Almond, Terry Pallot, Mario Boon, John Hunt, Robbie Robbins, Chris Mowry, Neil Uyetake, Andy Schmidt, Scott Dunbier, Justin Eisinger, Mariah Huehner, Bill Tortolini (2009)

I could’ve done without Data and the TNG cast at the center of things (again), but it’s cool to see Sulu flying around being a badass in his Excelsior ship. All these TNG tales feels like the higher-ups asking “Ey, where’s my TNG (money)? I gotta have my TNG (money)!”

Strange World dir. Don Hall (2022)

I loved it, but then I’m a sucker for perilous adventure tales across strange new lands.

Violent Night dir. Tommy Wirkola (2022)

Die Hard meets Home Alone with a blend of Bad Santa and maybe God of War?

Empire of Light dir. Sam Mendes (2022)

I was there for it all the way. Sometimes I remember I’m a normie-ass man but that part that feels like I’m a distant weirdo never goes away, and this movie’s for that guy.

Demon Wind dir. Charles Philip Moore (1990)

I watched this movie within a video game along with its MST3K-style commentary at 2 AM with my youngest brother and what a thing to do and write down.

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio dir. Guillermo del Toro (2022)

I mean, of course it’s great. I haven’t read the original story and it sounds like this hews closer to that than the popular perception from Disney’s takes.

Babylon dir. Damien Chazelle (2022)

This could've been dry but instead it’s constantly running at full charge, and even when we slow down to the granular level of filmmaking commentary it’s still a high pressure romp.

Jack and Jill dir. Dennis Dugan (2011)

Eh, I suppose the most impressive thing here is that Sandler sells the idea that’s he's own twin sister to the point that you consider them separate people.

The Whale dir. Darren Aronofsky (2022)

This had the potential to be bleak but instead it’s just genuinely hopeful. The performances come across a little too staged, as does the whole movie I suppose, so it’s no surprise to learn than this was originally a stage play.

The Outer Limits - "The Sandkings" (1995)

Here we go! I’d been thinking about watching the entire 1995 reboot of The Outer Limits and it’s everything I could’ve hoped for. All the 90s actors I remember from Saturday afternoon sci-fi TV, dated effects and production techniques, stories about man’s reach exceeding his grasp. This first episode even features three generations of the Bridges acting clan. The thing about intelligent alien bugs isn’t so compelling, but the overall production makes up for it.

The Outer Limits - "Vanishing Act" (1996)

I was looking for an episode that features New Year’s Day and found this story about a man who time jumps forward by ten years every time he falls asleep. It’s a sci-fi sort of twist on It’s a Wonderful Life and very reminiscent of something you’d see on Star Trek.

Tales from the Crypt - "And All Through the House" (1989)

And since I plan to also watch Tales from the Crypt after TOL, I skipped over to this story about a bad Santa stalking a bad mom.

The Outer Limits - "Valerie 23" (1995)

Here’s a reminder not to fuck around with robots. Don’t do it! Especially not if they’re hot! There’ll more fucked up robot tales in the seasons ahead...

The Outer Limits - "Blood Brothers" (1995)

We get a few stories here about rich assholes trying to live forever. This one does also present an interesting idea: what if we could all be cured of all ailments and live twice as long in the process? What happens when no one’s dying and the population count explodes? In any case, that’s more thought than what goes into the episode’s story. It’s mostly about a rich guy jumping the gun on proper medical testing and getting screwed as he should.

The Outer Limits - "The Second Soul" (1995)

Oh man, I was definitely on the paranoid side of this story as the events unfold. It was nice to get one of these where it isn’t a bleak or worst case ending.

The Outer Limits - "White Light Fever" (1995)

Another rich asshole who literally wants to live forever. And that’s it. Spoiler: he doesn’t get to.

Don't Hug Me I'm Scared - Series 2 (2022)

I wanna love this because I loved the original web series, but binging a bunch of TV-length episodes just felt like too much of it. I liked them when they were shorter and spaced out more. Binger beware, I know.

Edna Louise Cowell Bartlett "Babe" graduated from this life to her eternal life in heaven on July 1st at the age of 93. Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta, Georgia. Interment will follow at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Mableton, Georgia. Edna was preceded in death by her mother, father, stepmother, brothers and sisters, her infant son and her husband, Ralph Bartlett.

Edna was born in Cleveland, Ohio to William and Elsie Edna Schmidt Cowell on April 19th. Following her mother's death when Edna was 6 years old, her father married Anna Josephine. At the age of 22, Edna attended a revival under the preacher, John R. Rice, came under conviction and surrendered her life to Jesus Christ. She attended Bob Jones University, where she would meet her future husband, Ralph Bartlett. They left Bob Jones University in 1953, returned to Ralph's home town of Atlanta, GA and were married. They had 6 children, their first child, John Edward Bartlett died at 8 months old. Eventually, they settled in Mableton, GA. Edna raised her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. She assisted her preacher/evangelist husband of almost 63 years with his service in Youth for Christ, Atlanta Union Mission "Men", a couple of churches and other Christian ministries throughout their marriage. After raising her children, Edna re-entered the workforce, working 20 years for John H. Harland Company, retiring in 1992. Edna never met a stranger and loved to talk to anyone about her savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Anna Bartlett of Mableton, son Steven David Bartlett (Sandy) of Talking Rock, GA, daughter Sharon Elaine Bartlett of Mableton, son Joel William Bartlett of Kennesaw, and Connie Renee Bartlett of Acworth. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lisa Marie Woody, Aaron Bartlett, Tyler Bartlett, Sammy Dewey, Katherine Woody Comer (Trent David), Matthew Dewey (Michaela), Briana Martin, and her only great grandchild Bryson Brazil. Along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

Emma Brackett (Kaley Cuoco) is a New Jersey suburban wife and mother with a dark secret. It turns out that – unbeknownst to her husband Dave (David Oyelowo), her children and friends – she is a top covert contract killer.

Don’t worry, that is not a spoiler for the film. In fact we are introduced to her character when she methodically, seemingly unfeelingly, shoots and kills an apparent stranger in a strange airport and then disappears into the crowd.

It is only when she returns home that we learn about her complicated dueling lifestyles.

Those two lives come into conflict when she and her husband take a romantic trip to New York to celebrate their anniversary. To add a little spice to things, the two decide to do a little role play – pretending to be strangers who meet at a hotel bar.

Interrupting their little covert play is another traveler named Bob Kellerman (Bill Nighy). When Dave gets stuck in traffic on the way to the hotel, and Emma is sitting alone at the bar, Kellerman heads over to chat her up a bit. Even when Dave shows up, Kellerman won’t completely remove himself from the equation. And is it Emma’s imagination, but are some of Kellerman’s witty asides rather pointed suggestions that he may know more about her than she would (or should) be comfortable with?

This little rendezvous ends up exploding Emma’s shadow life, eventually bringing the police, the FBI and organized crime out of the woodworks in search of Emma, who must hit the road to try to go into hiding trying to avoid the many people coming out of the woodworks looking for her.

Honestly, Role Play is not the most unique storyline ever. I can think of at least a few other films where a spouse or lover is blindsided by the fact that their sweet, doting significant other is actually a paid killer.

Perhaps a bit different is the fact that Role Play actually plays up the love story aspect of the story rather than focus completely on the life of an assassin (although, that of course is delved into as well).

In fact, in general, Role Play takes its well-trod territory and makes a mostly fun adventure and love story out of it. Cuoco is suitably torn between her two worlds and Oyelowo is wonderfully relatable as the blindsided husband who finds out that his wife is not actually a businessperson working in marketing and research.

Remains of Ancient Planet Lie Deep Within Earth - Technology Org

In the 1980s, geophysicists made a startling discovery related to a hypothetical ancient planet: two continent-sized blobs of unusual material were found deep near the center of the Earth, one beneath the African continent and one beneath the Pacific Ocean. Each blob is twice the size of the Moon and likely composed of different proportions of elements than the mantle surrounding it.

Where did these strange blobs—formally known as large low-velocity provinces (LLVPs)—come from? A new study led by Caltech researchers suggests that they are remnants of an ancient planet that violently collided with Earth billions of years ago in the same giant impact that created our Moon.

The study, published in the journal Nature, also proposes an answer to another planetary science mystery. Researchers have long hypothesized that the Moon was created in the aftermath of a giant impact between Earth and a smaller planet dubbed Theia, but no trace of Theia has ever been found in the asteroid belt or in meteorites.

This new study suggests that most of Theia was absorbed into the young Earth, forming the LLVPs, while residual debris from the impact coalesced into the Moon.

The research was led by Qian Yuan, O.K. Earl Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate in the laboratories of both Paul Asimow (MS ’93, PhD ’97), the Eleanor and John R. McMillan Professor of Geology and Geochemistry; and Michael Gurnis, the John E. And Hazel S. Smits Professor of Geophysics and Clarence R. Allen Leadership Chair, director of Caltech’s Seismological Laboratory, and director of the Schmidt Academy for Software Engineering at Caltech.

Scientists first discovered the LLVPs by measuring seismic waves traveling through the earth. Seismic waves travel at different speeds through different materials, and in the 1980s, the first hints emerged of large-scale three-dimensional variations deep within the structure of Earth.

In the deepest mantle, the seismic wave pattern is dominated by the signatures of two large structures near the Earth’s core that researchers believe possess an unusually high level of iron. This high iron content means the regions are denser than their surroundings, causing seismic waves passing through them to slow down and leading to the name “large low velocity provinces.”

Yuan, a geophysicist by training, was attending a seminar about planet formation given by Mikhail Zolotov, a professor at Arizona State University, in 2019. Zolotov presented the giant-impact hypothesis, while Qian noted that the Moon is relatively rich in iron. Zolotov added that no trace had been found of the ancient planetary impactor that must have collided with the Earth.

“Right after Mikhail had said that no one knows where the impactor is now, I had a ‘eureka moment’ and realized that the iron-rich impactor could have transformed into mantle blobs,” says Yuan.

Yuan worked with multidisciplinary collaborators to model different scenarios for Theia’s chemical composition and its impact with Earth. The simulations confirmed that the physics of the collision could have led to the formation of both the LLVPs and the Moon.

Some of Theia’s mantle could have become incorporated into the Earth’s own, where it ultimately clumped and crystallized together to form the two distinct blobs detectable today at Earth’s core–mantle boundary today; other debris from the collision mixed together to form the Moon.

Given such a violent impact, why did Theia’s material clump into the two distinct blobs instead of mixing together with the rest of the forming planet? The researchers’ simulations showed that much of the energy delivered by Theia’s impact remained in the upper half of the mantle, leaving Earth’s lower mantle cooler than estimated by earlier, lower-resolution impact models.

Because the lower mantle was not totally melted by the impact, the blobs of iron-rich material from Theia stayed largely intact as they sifted down to the base of the mantle, like the colored masses of paraffin wax in a turned-off lava lamp. Had the lower mantle been hotter (that is, if it had received more energy from the impact), it would have mixed more thoroughly with the iron-rich material, like the colors in a stirred pot of paints.

The next steps are to examine how the early presence of Theia’s heterogeneous material deep within the earth might have influenced our planet’s interior processes, such as plate tectonics.

“A logical consequence of the idea that the LLVPs are remnants of Theia is that they are very ancient,” Asimow says.

“It makes sense, therefore, to investigate next what consequences they had for Earth’s earliest evolution, such as the onset of subduction before conditions were suitable for modern-style plate tectonics, the formation of the first continents, and the origin of the very oldest surviving terrestrial minerals.”
