Summary:
Sam Wesson is trapped in a dead-end job, all the while supporting his father. Or is he? The only thing he knows for sure is that he's in love with his father, and the dreams are getting worse. But Sam has a plan, that hopefully will earn him the one thing he wants more than anything in this world. His father's admiration.
look i like to defend john winchester from fandom mischaracterisation as much as the next guy but ‘he did nothing wrong he was only doing the best he could!!’ well that’s simply not true is it
Thinking about how Dean idolized John, imitated him at every turn, made himself malleable to become whatever soldier or weapon he needed, but was ultimately convinced that he'd never live up to the man John was or expected him to be.
Thinking about how Jack idolized Dean, imitated him at every turn, made himself malleable to become whatever soldier or weapon he needed, but was ultimately convinced that he'd never live up to the man Dean was or expected him to be.
To other people in all those towns they lived in for just a few weeks dean and Sam and john are just a normal family, if you don't look that close, sure they move around a lot, sure they react violently when you tap them on the arm. But really if you don't look in they're normal kids. They talk, they bicker. John tries his best, so does Dean. Then you spend more time with them and the cracks get more and more obvious, John's only so calm because he drinks himself into a stupor every night, babbling to Dean about Mary and the life he could have had. He never remembers in the morning.
Dean can't get away from his brother, and worst of all, he doesn't even want to. He knows that he feels all the wrong things about him but really, he will never act on it, it's not like Sam notices when he looks too long, looks at him too lovingly (except for last time, last time he saw).
Sam isn't sure what he feels really, he's looked it up in all the library phycology books, emotional incest, codependency, they all tell him. They aren't right, they can't be because Dean drank too much last night and made him promise that he was a good brother, that he never messed up. He said yes and he believed it the entire time.
He's starting to doubt, maybe this isn't normal. Maybe he should run away.
thinking about sam saying “you were the one who said don’t come back dad. you closed that door.” to john vs dean telling sam “if you walk out of that door, don’t you ever come back” i love it when they’re so unsubtle about samdean/samjohn parallels
What drew them to each other is that they were both willing to do reprehensible things.
Whether it's to save their own skins, to save their families, to carry out a plan... They're naturally fucked up in the same pragmatic way.
But they can BE their full, "flawed, petty evil creatures" in full light of the other.
///
///
DUNDUNDUN SAM WAS JUST WAITING FOR HER TO TURN AWAY WHAT A BASTARD
///
She should've gotten to KILL him at least once, I think. Just to further make their bond weirder.
///
"Don't struggle," she says.
///
ALSO.
I like to watch the unraveling futility of their ambitions. Rowena, Crowley, and Sam were all united by wanting status and ambition to help them escape "a rigged game."
"And it took everything from me, everyone I love-- my family."
///
///
BOOM. There it is.
See, Rowena sees the lengths Sam will go, and she actually RESPECTS it.
Their relationship is built on the comfort of understanding WHY they're willing to gut each other AND each other's loved ones. Strong feelings that they try to dissociate themselves from.
They use their smarts and ruthlessness to protect themselves and their loved ones at all costs.
And they both want to change.
"You were never gonna kill him. There was a time you would've. But not now."
///
There is such an--an OPENNESS about the bad things they've done, and Sam needs that in his life.
///
And in season 15, Rowena knows that Sam wouldn't have been able to kill her at the end there... not unless she guided his hand and helped him.
as much as i hate hate hate john, i can say that when the boys were still really little, like right after the fire, he y’know. tried. shittily but still. and like i’m just thinking abt the leather jacket rn and how dean definitely formed some attachments to it as a child that carried on into his adulthood. how many nights was that jacket the one source of warmth and comfort ? nights when they had to sleep in the backseat of the impala and john draped that jacket over them. the few memories dean has of john hugging or holding him and dean clinging to his jacket. and later he tries to find the ghost of his father in the shape of that jacket. he wears it and seeks something, some scrap of warmth, some fleeting memory of being cared for. and it’s not enough, it’ll never be enough, and he deserved more, and he’s swimming in the jacket, he’ll never fill it out properly, but it’s all he has so it’ll have to do
I SWEAR TO GOD! They need to take shots of holy water everytime they see each other! Bring back Cristo, this is ridiculous. But Meg's back! Bobby, sadly got possessed, but he resisted cus they were gonna make him hurt one of his boys 😭😭😭 John could never. This poor Nick dude is going through it, but he is funny. 'Ok Satan 🙄 tell me to quit drinking before bed' 'if it's all the same to you I'd like to wake up now' 'why the hell would I do something like that'. Dean is the vessel for Michael. All but two Angels are massive dicks. But guess who's back to save the boys? Castiel, being a bad ass and....carving things into the boys ribs.
AHHHHH BOBBY REASSURING SAM THAT IT WAS THE DEMON THAT TOLD HIM TO LOSE HIS NUMBER 😭😭😭 CUS BOBBY BELIEVES FAMILY IS FAMILY NO MATTER WHAT AND IT DON'T END IN BLOOD. But Dean doesn't think he can trust Sam anymore cus he took a demon's side over his brothers 😭😭😭
john is a wildly fragile man and dean has memories from the early days, when he would cry and cry and sob late and night and early in the morning, everything in between. He was alone in the world, just two kids who, like him, couldn't stop crying and a sense of something not being right. He brought guns, knives, weapons of any kind. He bought the cheapest booze he could get probably gave himself alcohol poisoning a few times.
Sometimes he thought about killing himself, dropping the kids off at the fire station, drinking until he didn't wake up, shooting himself in the head, taking all his prescriptions at once.
He got burns all across his chest from trying to go back into the house while it was burning, to save Mary. They gave him the strongest meds they could, made him sign an AMA form when he tried to leave.
