Riot Press’s “Zorro and the Phantasm Cult of Hollywood Hills, 1955" Makes Its Mark | #comics #Zorro #IndieComics #MonochromeMay #art
Over the weekend, Riot Press launched a crowdfunding campaign for Zorro and the Phantasm Cult of Hollywood Hills, 1955, a 24-page, black and white comic book. The project is already fully funded, having raised more than $3 thousand at the time of this writing. Written and illustrated by Patrick Thomas Parnell,* Zorro and the Phantasm Cult is a reimagining of the classic folk hero that puts the…

part 3
part 4
They were awake at daybreak the following morning, mainly because the uneasy silence blanketing the mattress, blanketing the whole room, made it difficult to sleep. The little psychological progress they’d made the night prior was just that: little.

“We need to get ready,” Simon said after checking the clock again, and not for the last time.

Johnny stayed put, thinking. After a moment, he heaved himself up. “I suppose you’re right.”

“‘Course. I tend to be.”

Johnny watched as Simon straightened out the finishing bits and bobs of his dress uniform. He’d wash up if he could, show up to his own funeral looking sharp, but the best he could manage with the limitations was stripping off his bulkier bits of kit and, with his spit and shirt as a washrag, scrape away some of the blood caked to the side of his head.

He glanced over his shoulder as he gave a particularly nasty bit of persuasion, and snorted a laugh. “Lookin’ like a knob, Lt.”

Simon rolled his eyes. “What can I say? You inspired me, Johnny.”

“Haud yer—“ Johnny began, and then laughed the hardest he had since everything went to shit the night before. “Hey.”

Simon stilled his hands and met the meaningful look in Johnny’s eyes. Not that he had much a choice to do otherwise since the wiseass decided to stand between him and the mirror.

“Thank you,” Johnny said, nodding solidly to put feeling to the statement that words and intonation alone couldn’t. Even that fell short.

“For indirectly calling you a knob?” Simon asked, seeing as clearly as he ever had.

The clarity crept free from the mire, like sun from behind the dying overcast.

“Yeah.”

The exchange felt related, somehow, to the loaded glances they used to share, and to the unambiguously-worded conversations they never did and never would bother with. Struck through the very center by a common thread. Understanding in code.

Several minutes into the funeral mass, Simon was wondering if something got lost in translation somehow.

They’d proceeded into the church nice and easy, measured. No more cocky jokes, or rather, not quite as many. After all, Johnny had an apparent allergy to shutting the fuck up. The levity would be welcomed if it didn’t have Simon fighting laughter throughout his lover’s (?) funeral mass.

Everyone would be fighting laughter, too, if only they could hear Johnny’s ongoing commentary on his own funeral. But they couldn’t, for better or for worse.

“Ah, pack it in, Aunt Midge,” Johnny groaned, and then adding in a whispered aside, as if any unwelcome ears could be listening in, “Insufferable old cunt. I’m sure she’s upset and all, but more than anything, the rocket’s glad to have the attention.”

He then cups his hands around his mouth to shout “too bad no one fucken cares!”

Simon couldn’t help but burst out laughing. How fucking absurd and awful everything was. What a fucking joke. He caught it quickly, but it was still too late. The whole parish had its eyes on him. The man next to him looked particularly perturbed—and pissed—and maybe out of real concern or plain desire to show everyone they weren’t associated, he hissed to Simon “now, the hell is wrong with you, lad?”

Simon ignored Johnny as he phantasmically pointed and laughed. He deadpanned, “I’ve gone mad with grief”

The man sobered pretty quickly at that. “Uh, awright then. Sorry, lad”

Simon spent the rest of the mass muttering into his hands as if in prayer, telling Johnny to shut the hell up in the only way they could manage. It was funny, but then the organist started up on a rousing rendition of Ave Maria.

“It fucking gets me every time, damn,” Johnny laughed, but also cried. Simon wanted to hold him, make it better, but there wasn’t much point in trying. The best they had by way of physical comfort was Johnny taking Simon’s outstretched and empty hand as the parish joined to recite The Lord’s Prayer.

Their hands passed through the others’ just as their bodies had on that first day, but the thought was comfort enough. But comfort enough could grow to become excruciating, given time.

But that time hadn’t happened yet, and when it did, they’d handle it then. They’d decided it, though they hadn’t said the words.

“Give us this day our daily bread”
One day at a time, darling.
”And forgive us our trespasses”
And when we fuck it up—
“as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
and we will, we can fix it together.

“And lead us not into temptation;”
So quit your fucking worrying—

“but deliver us from evil.”
Worrying won’t get us anywhere.

“For thine is the kingdom,”
You’re too pretty to be worrying like that, anyhow.

“the power and the glory,”
Shut the fuck up.

“for ever and ever.”
Aw, c’mon, you love it.
“Amen.”
No, I love you.

So, I decided to check the Melodious archetype’s Kanji name patterns. These are disturbingly complex, and I’m not a Japanese speaker, so most of this will be taken from relevant sources (specifically Wiktionary):
-The archetype’s name is Genso(u), 幻奏 in Kanji, and げんそう in Hiragana. The Kanji for Gen (幻), which means fantasy or phantom, but is generally translated as illusion in this archetype’s context. The other Kanji is Sou (奏), which means to play music. The archetype’s name is a pun on Gensou, which means illusion (幻想), with the Kanji  想, meaning idea or concept, being replaced with the Kanji for playing music. But it is also similar to Genso (元素), which means chemical element, which is likely a reference to the fact that this is a Fusion archetype, but also might be a reference to Masumi and Judai’s respective archetypes (and GX series in general).
There are few interesting things with this though. The Kanji for Gen is used for several things in Yu-Gi-Oh!, such as the Sangenshin (Three Illusory Gods, ie. Egyptian Gods), and Sangenma (Three Phantasms, ie. Sacred Beasts), but also for Genryu (Wyrm-Type, introduced in ARC-V era with no represenatives in the show itself). Which makes me continually wonder if Bracelet Girls were supposed to have Wyrms.
--The archetype’s name patterns are divided into five or so groups:
**Genso no Utahime, 幻奏の歌姫, which is written in Hiragana as げんそうのうたひめ, is translated as “Melodious Songstress”. 歌姫, means Utahime, which literally means song princess/lady, since uta (歌), means song, and 姫,hime, means princess, or lady. This term is apparently commonly translated as Songstress, though it can also be translated as diva or female musician.
Interestingly, Kanji for Uta is also used for traditional Japanese poetry, though not modern Japanese poetry.
**Genso no Otohime, 幻奏の音姫, which is written in Hiragana as げんそうのおとひめ, is translated as “Melodious Maestra”, and is a sub-archetype of Melodious/Gensou archetype.  音姫, Otohime, is a pun on 弟姫, which means younger princess or younger noble. The Kanji, 音, Oto, means sound or timbre, but is also used as a shortened version of ongaku, meaning music. It can also means news, rumor, echo, or speech in linguistics. The Kanji Hime is the same as above.
**Genso no Otome, 幻奏の音女, which is written in Hiragana as げんそうのおとめ, is translated as “Melodious Diva”. The Oto Kanji is the same as above, and the Kanji, 女, me, means a woman, a wife, or a female. This is a pun on Otome,  乙女, which means maiden. daughter, or young girl/lady.
The same pun is used in Otome, 音女, an early Duel Monsters era Normal Monster, whose localized name is Sonic Maid. This card was used by Step Johnny’s Deck in the Battle City filler featuring Anzu.
**Genso no Hanakasei, 幻奏の華歌聖, which is written in Hiragana as はなかせい, is translated as “Melodious Choir”. The Kanji, 華, Hana has multiple meanings, but is commonly used for flower. Other meanings include flashiness, brilliance/shine, and beauty. The Kanji, 歌, Ka, is the same as Kanji Uta above, but spelled differently. The Kanji 聖, Sei, literally means holy/sacred, but it is commonly translated as Saint in this context. The term Kasei, 歌聖, is likely a pun on Kasei, 仮声, which means falsetto, or Kasei, 歌聖, which uses the same Kanji as this name, means great poet.
**Genso no Hanagakusei, 幻奏の華楽聖, which is written in Hiragana as はながくせい, is translated as “Melodious Composer”. The Kanjis for Hana and Sei are the same as above. The Kanji gaku, 楽, is another shortening of ongaku, meaning music, but the Kanji itself can also mean comfort, ease, or the final day of a performance. The name is a pun on gakusei, 学生, which means student, generally university student, but sometimes also high school student ,or gakusei, 学制, which means educational system.
-As a general rule, most of the Kanji used for this archetype is quite archaic, so it might be hard to find the exact counterparts, and references here. This is likely because the archetype is composed of muses, so Konami probably wanted to give them some old fashioned theming.

MM13'S TF Preferences:
Characters I'd Love To TF Into: Any Dan Aykroyd character (human characters mostly but Beldar is allowed too, even if it's Grocer, Wade Motch or Tom Everett, Aykroyd is my favorite SNL cast member), any Tim Burton character but either any character that was played by Johnny Depp, Adam Maitland, Betelgeuse, or the Hessian (you can also make me Max Shreck, Danny Devito's Penguin, any of the apes from the POTA remake, and heck one of my avatars was Otho Fenlock, it would be interesting to see what you could do with that, i've always wondered what having the voice of the late Glenn Shadix would be like), Jebediah Morningside/Tall-Man (Phantasm), Dawn Bellwether (Zootopia), Santanico Pandemonium (From Dusk Till Dawn), Jerry Dandridge (Fright Night 1985), Herbert West (Reanimator) - I am mad about Jeffrey Combs so it would be awesome to be Herbert West (or Milton Dammers or HP Hatecraft), Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare On Elm Street), Ludban (Leprechaun), Genie (Aladdin, only Robin Williams will do. I wouldn't mind being any of Robin's other roles either), Lady Amalthea (Last Unicorn), Lady Dimitrescu (Resident Evil: Village), Ash Williams (Evil Dead franchise), Hades (Hercules), Collector (Demon Knight), any Kyle Machlachlan character but in particular Dale Cooper or Paul Atreides, Salazzle, Lopunny (both in anthro form would work just fine), Angela Franklin (Night Of The Demons), Elvira (Elvira: Mistress of the Dark), Any South Park character (i'd like to try something with the adult versions of the kids from the recent specials), Any Simpsons Character (Treehouse of Horror is a must) teen versions of the Ghoul School Girls from Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School, Any Monster High character, Abe Sapien (Hellboy), Morticia Addams (Addams Family/Addams Family Values), Jareth (Labyrinth), Pinhead (Hellraiser), Annie Wilkes (Misery), Helen Hyde (Doctor Jekyll and Ms Hyde), Any Stallone character but in particular John Spartan (Demolition Man), Felicia (Darkstalkers), Bowsette, Any Bojack Horseman character (Beatrice, Bojack, Hollyhock or maybe any of the other animal-people chaacers too), Any Sing character but Buster Moon in particular, Carrigan Crittenden (Casper), Mirage (Aladdin tv series), Randall Flagg, humanoid style werewolves think Teen Wolf or Big Wolf On Campus, humanoid/anthro style Pokemon, Honey Monster (Sugar Puffs, either the actual HM himself or a Honey Monster in general).
Would Enjoy It: Akasha (Queen Of The Damned), Iago (Aladdin) - I like the idea of making Iago anthro or humanoid and well I cannot say no to having Gilbert Gottfried's voice, Scar (Lion King) - I have an anthro version of Scar I did a picture of (I made him a professor in my 'Prideland University' concept which is basically if the Lion King's characters were anthro and went to college), Professor Ratigan (Great Mouse Detective) - highly underappreciated, would be good to be him or Basil (or that sexy Miss Kitty mouse too), Lillith (Bordello Of Blood), Minerva Mink (Animaniacs), Julie Bruin (Tiny Toon Adventures), Seth Brundle (The Fly 1986), Grandmaster (Thor: Ragnarok), Philoctetes (Hercules) - Yes, to Danny Devito, yes...yes, yes. Selene (Underworld), any alien character from a movie or show but in particular Jumba or Pleakley or Gantu for example (Lilo and Stitch) and also maybe Mork from Mork and Mindy, Pete (Disney), Any Biker Mice character but Vinnie in particular (i'm also considering Lawrence Limburger or a plutarkian in general, but i'm having trouble deciding on how i'd do it), Sil (Species), Peggy Bundy (Married With Children), Weyoun (Star Trek: DS9). Anthro version of any MLP character (I have a whole section of humanoid/anthro MLP characters you can choose from or ones I can choose from, but i'd like to be Discord, Chrsaylis/Chrissy or King Sombra or Tirek or Cheese Sandwich, can't beat Weird Al), Any of Jay Leno's Tonight Show characers (Iron Jay, Mr Brain or Evil Jay perhaps), Kronk or Kuzco (Emperor's New Groove), Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), Serleena (Men In Black II), Live-action Grinch, Vacendak (Freejack), Mystique (Marvel), Lee (Critters 2), Djinn (Wishmaster), Jennifer Check (Jennifer's Body), Megamind (Megamind), Ursula (Little Mermaid), Edna Turnblad (Hairspray 2007), Mona Lisa Vito (My Cousin Vinny), Lisle Von Rhuman (Death Becomes Her), Seth Gecko (From Dusk Till Dawn), Buffy Summers (Buffyverse), Ahmanet (The Mummy 2017), Candy Kong, Tigra (Marvel), any Corey Feldman character, but specifically teen or adult Feldman characters, Vypra (Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue), Jack Burton (Big Trouble In Little China, the three storms or Lo Pan or Gracie Law would be good too, in case you're wondering my favorite of the storm is Thunder). Mileena (Mortal Kombat), Pennywise (It), any Star Wars alien species, any Warcraft species, but in particular Pandaren. Any species from the Star Trek franchise but definitely Klingon, Caitian, Romulan, Vorta.
Would Definitely Find It Interesting: Shao Lin (Captain Simian and The Space Monkeys), Donkey Kong or Funky Kong (Donkey Kong), Thirty-Thirty (Bravestarr), Beast (Beauty and the Beast, as long as it's not too focused on lovey-dovey stuff and actually has some action and other elements I like), Demona (Gargoyles), Any Flushed Away character, Darkness (Legend), Salvatore Moreau (Resident Evil: Village), Any Xenaverse character (i'm not picky, but I definitely gravitate towards Xena herself, Callisto, or Autolycus), Jara (Beetleborgs/Beetleborgs Metallix), Horribelle (Beetleborgs/Beetleborgs Metallix), Flabber (Beetleborgs/Beetleborgs Metallix), Kimberly Hart (Power Rangers), Toxica (Power Rangers Wild Force), Nefaria (Masked Rider), Astronema (Power Rangers In Space), Chuds...just Chuds in general, Assett (Shape Of Water), Smithy (Gavin and Stacey) - Okay, you can turn me into a James Corden character or James himself if you wish but i'm not very good at acting like James so you'll have to either teach me or i'll teach myself to do it, Amilyn (Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1992, any Buffyverse character would work well with me to be honest even if it's from the movie).
Would If Under Certain Circumstances: Louis (The Princess And The Frog), if I get to be Louis can I at least be a headcanon version of him I made in which he is a human turned alligator and in anthro form as opposed to a non-morphic talking magical alligator? Pegasus (Hercules), the thing is when I want to be Pegasus i'll choose anthro or if normal Pegasus i'd like to at least have some action, no lovey-dovey stuff for too long or I might get violently ill, besides...what good is being a heroic demigod's best friend if you cannot go on adventures? Maximus (Tangled), anthro please and i'd like for him to be able to speak, Sulley (Monsters Inc) - as long as nothing too out of character and nothing sexual and no lovey-dovey stuff because remember Sulley is more than just a snuggling machine. Also Randall must be involved too and must be given a redemption arc.
Uhhhh...No, Don't Want This: Non-morphic Pokemon, non-morphic style werewolves that sometimes run on two legs, 100% Wolf (I don't like that particular franchise), any celebrity from the 40's-60's, Tug (Brother Bear). The thing is I don't dislike bear transformations I just find that outside of hibernating and eating there's nothing much to being a bear so I would very much be bored if I got stuck as a bear character anyway, I don't understand how he and the other clearly non-morphic animals can talk I can get how Kenai can do it, but how come he can? Baloo (Jungle Book), the only exception is the Talespin version because at he's anthro and wears clothes in that universe (no non-morphic Jungle Book characters please, only anthro or humanoid versions, if you have to go with one species from that movie, primates only), Tiger Dancers (Zootopia)- they're overdone and I don't want it to be like that one piece with the tiger dancers essentially pulling an Agent Smith and creating clones of themelves by turning others, Fire Emblem characters (tried it, didn't like it and not too keen on the art designs, either make Kaden more half fox-like or don't include him or any Fire Emblem character at all), Simba (anthro only please and the last time I did something Simba related it got kind of uncomfortable), Homestuck characters - i'll only do Homestuck if I can do my own version of it where the characters look like actual human beings since I don't know how to even do a tf into how they normally look like or how to describe it also nothing overly predatorial (you heard me. I don't want any overly rapey subtext with Jade Harley, she's too good to be treated like that), Queen Ellinor (Brave, don't like her as a woman and as a bear, didn't like having to be her OTP in a tf rp and didn't like having to be a bear, so please don't include her), Norm (Norm of the North) - no Norm of the North period, I don't know why some people think non-morphic animals are sexy, so I wouldn't want to be him, Toothless (How To Train Your Dragon) - I got burned on out doing Night Fury stuff ages ago and will only do it if I can do anthro night-furies or night-fury-girls (half human/half night fury dragonesses) and don't have to do any cutesy wutesy momma and baby stuff/lovey-dovey stuff, Puro (Changed), please...DO NOT do anything related to Changed with me, the only way i'll ever do Changed is if I can parody it or do my own headcanon version of it or my own version of it which addresses the issues I have with said game, Gloria (Madagascar). Either make the Madagascar cast anthro or don't include them at all, don't try to do anything sexual with Gloria, I feel uncomfortable with non-morphic animal character x human character pairings plus I don't think she's sexy. Creepypasta characters (don't know that many and the only ones I know are Jeff, The Rake and Laughing Jack, I can do FNAF but only if I can use my anthro/living versions of them).

DEN OF GEEK CRITICS’ PICKS
The Ninth Gate
Though director Roman Polanski is a horrific figure himself, this 1999 neo-noir horror film, The Ninth Gate is superb. Thirty years after Rosemary’s Baby, Polanski conjured the devil once again and injected it with some of the pulp from his noir classic Chinatown in a movie that finds Johnny Depp as a man in Satanic Detective mode. Depp is a classic book authenticator hired to authenticate De Umbrarum Regis Novum Portis (The Nine Doors To the Kingdom of Shadows), a book believed by cultists capable of raising Satan to Earth.
The Ninth Gate doesn’t provide cheap thrills; it tightens the suspense like a noose. Polanski subtly creates an uneasy atmosphere using minimal effects. The director knows where evil lives and lets the settings and sound make the invitations with subliminal references to recognizable horror and cinematic danger, using framing and music similarly to Stanley Kubrick. The Ninth Gate packages its scares with classy style that the characters deliver with sexily provocative intelligence. Dean Corso may be Johnny Depp’s greatest spiritual transformation, from odious to ultimate evil and the audience cheers on his descent, happy to ride with him straight to hell.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Perhaps the world’s first horror film and a go-to example of early German Expressionist filmmaking, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has been unsettling audiences for over a century.
The film’s main story centers on two young friends, Francis and Alan (Friedrich Feher and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski), who, while jockeying for the affections of Jane (Lil Dagover), visit a local traveling carnival. There they take in the act of the mysterious, top-hatted and wild-haired Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss). As they watch, Caligari awakens his somnambulist subject, Cesare (the great Conrad Veidt), who under hypnosis answers questions from the audience. When Alan jokingly asks when he will die, Cesare responds “Before dawn.” We’ll let you guess the rest.
The film isn’t remembered much for its story, but for its arresting visual style, featuring painted backdrops that make the entire production feel like a fever dream. The painted townscape is filled with curved and pointed buildings teetering at dangerous angles, almost as if they were alive and shrieking. Roads twist and spiral to nowhere. The perspectives are deliberately mismatched and inconsistent, with the props and sets sometimes being too large for the characters, and others too small. The result is a transgressive, deeply influential film that has been unsettling audiences for over 100 years.
The Exorcist III
Based on his 1983 novel Legion, writer-director William Peter Blatty’s Exorcist III arrived 17 years after William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. Despite the still-looming pop culture presence of the original, The Exorcist III is sneakily the most interesting film in the series. Less a horror movie than a psychological thriller with supernatural and spiritual overtones, The Exorcist III takes place 17 years after the events of the first film, and with no reference whatsoever made to the events in the second. It finds Lt. Kinderman confronted with the apparent reappearance of two figures from his past who had supposedly died. The first is father Damien Karras (Jason Miller), who had died after bouncing down an endless flight of steps while performing an exorcism in the original movie, and the Gemini Killer, a serial killer loosely based on the Zodiac Killer that had been executed 17 years prior. However, there’s been a new string of murders around town carrying all the hallmarks of the Gemini.
While the studio famously mangled Blatty’s original cut of the film, there’s still a lot to like here, including a terrifying performance from Brad Dourif. Blatty is fantastic at creating dread-inducing atmosphere and has a keen attention to character and detail. It may not be as exciting as the original, but it’s a smart-slow burn film worthy of the Exorcist mantle.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
The Devil’s Rejects
An homage to sleazy ‘70s C-movies, Rob Zombie’s sequel to House of 1,000 Corpses will leave you in the need of a shower, but it’s delightfully demented and the musician turned filmmaker’s finest effort. The shock-fest finds the Firefly clan, Otis (Bill Moseley), Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) and Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) – on the run from die-hard determined sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe). What unfolds is a nasty thrill ride full of twists, turns, and more gore than most audiences are comfortable with. How Zombie still manages to make such repulsive content entertaining, how he manages to get you to almost root for the despicable Firefly clan, is inexplicable magic trick, but indebted to Zombie’s use of black humor and deep knowledge of genre conventions that he sometimes subverts, but often gleefully leans into.
Train to Busan
The overused and increasingly predictable zombie genre got a shot in the arm with Train to Busan, a South Korean film from director Yeon Sang-ho about a young father desperately attempting to get his little daughter to her mother via train as a zombie pandemic breaks out all around them. Even if it veered close to outright sentimentality at times, Train to Busan differed from most of the films and TV shows we’ve seen in this genre due to its genuine bond of love between its main characters, and the flickers of empathy and humanity found therein.
And on a technical level, Yeon crafted his film with a kinetic energy that had been missing from the genre as of late. Train to Busan was not just a monster hit in its native land but amassed an international following as well, along with critical acclaim across the board. It’s easy to see why given the film’s well-drawn characters, subtle social commentary (some on the train feel they are more worthy of survival than others) and frightening action sequences that add up to a thrilling and emotionally powerful ride.

Would zsasz eventually get rattled if he meet someone truly unfazed by him, who never ever gives a hint of fear or any opening to be analyzed to get under their skin. He is so focused on getting under ppls skin if he cant kill them, that that seems like something that would affect him. Or would he just try different approaches until something sticks, never giving up? would he even like such a person, be intrigued?
Off the cuff, I’m immediately reminded of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. While Johnny is 180 degrees different from Zsasz in his methodology, if I remember right, in the second issue, he has a lengthy conversation with a victim who espouses no fear of death. Before Johnny flips the switch of the murder machine, the victim said “so fuck fear. I have nothing to fear.” As the victim gets ripped apart Johnny responds “I envy your conviction” (I’m sure I got this wrong; I haven’t read JtHM in nearly twenty years).
I don’t know if Zsasz would be that... melodramatic, though. I’ve written at length about how I think Zsasz’s ”vision” and rules work (pinkiepiebones.tumblr.com/tagged/zsasz), how terminally ill people who have accepted the inevitability of oblivion fluctuate between zombie and living being in his eyes, how humanoids touched by some sort of inhuman power (Ivy, arguably Croc, etc) appear as Others, etc etc...
Someone with no fear of Zsasz and what he represents, someone Zsasz observes and sees as having no tethers to the zombie world, someone who is simply existing dispassionately and alone but still suffering theough the illusion of life... Depending on his mood Zsasz would either think it an easy tally or something meant to be pitied but unworthy of salvation. I think Zsasz changes his rules to fit the situation sometimes.
As I’m typing this I can picture both scenarios- a blooddrunk Zsasz declaring he has spent a week stalking this person and sees nothing but doldrums and drugery and, really, he is doing the loner a favour before offing them...
But I can also see the pensive philosophising Zsasz who emerges from the shadows one night like a phantasm to inform the person that their life is so bereft of any attempt at even the most tenuous gasp of humanity, that they are simply too pathetic to be saved. That would mess someone up, I imagine- a killer declaring you too, well, boring to kill??
Thank you as always for the ask, anon. I do so love talking about my horrible son.

▬▬ι═══════ﺤ 🔥 || It is not often Grandmaster Hasashi rides a horse through the dark dreary pathways, with no lanterns or his hellfire aligning themselves as though they were guiding him to heaven. His half-loosened hair swapping against his cheeks, the pitter-patter of rain and winds giving way to the endless pit of darkness that threatens to consume his soul. And then there was Harumi; her light shining like a beacon, and he would be instantaneously drawn to her like a moth, and his darkness may seem like these cold nights, his eyes both yearning for words and eternal silence, save for the slowed gallop of Honō’s footsteps. Maelstrom of his thoughts seek refuge in the eye of the storm, knowing fully well that no one could ever find him here. He often goes through the deep, agonizing pain like this, as a part of him flees these realities, while Hanzo Hasashi continues to stand against the tides, amidst the storm. He would simply watch her silhouette gallop away on his black mare, and she will never be seen again until the next time, as the cosmic drip of an illusion will bring her back amidst his tranced state of wakeful dream.
Such intrusive inquiry prods at his ribcage as he dismounts, poking his ribcage. If anyone wasn’t such an asinine fool, they would have never stood themselves against the Shirai Ryu Grandmaster, knowing that they stand at the edge of danger. His temptation for unbridled rage and destruction could be felt in a single glance, and if looks could kill, the stranger would have long dropped dead in its irreversible finality; it is a warning, a simple one. But anyone should know that won’t stop Hanzo Hasashi from exacting the unthinkable. He had done much worse for lesser inquiries in the past. His eyes narrow, the dark amber turning iridescent white under the tenebrous shadow as the phantasmic inferno ascends and sweeps ablaze. A firestorm rolling in, and now, Scorpion becomes the predator, the wolf in waiting. The one who questions him becomes his deer, his hunger, and his temptation. His eyes settle, solidify in their steeled intensity, as manifested inferno emanates from the fathomless depths of his glare.
“What I do with the former Hollywood is none of your concern,” the sharp furrow of his blade eyes narrow further, as he subconsciously caresses Honō’s dark, glistening coat. “His wisdom and growth is prevalent in the way he speaks; for I sense every piece of suffering he has ever encountered, collected into his heart and soul like rotting flowers. Our shared worlds of loss and death growing heavy in our arms. Knowing we would not have to writhe from being horridly wounded from them all, knowing that we could push death away and be at each other’s side comforts me greatly. Even in the darkness of the night when things become utterly unbearable, I think upon the ways how Johnny Cage endures with flamboyant humor and mischief. That bring a smile upon my being, knowing that we both refuse to be relinquished beneath the toilsome pressure of living and thriving, doing whatever it takes to survive.”
Johnny Cage has given Hanzo Hasashi an opportunity to allow himself to hope and believe again. Know that he won’t allow the memories from the past to spoil the present, or to rob him of future always brings him back to solidified reality. With the bursting eruption of columnic hellfire drenching over the intruder, Grandmaster Hasashi swiftly careens himself towards the other direction, walking Honō back to the Shirai Ryu stables. ▬▬ι═══════ﺤ 🔥 ||

114 *Lady Vengeance (05)
115 Long Weekend (78)
116 Body Double (84)
117 The Crazies (73) I love that Romero shows the utter confusion that would no doubt reign in the case of any kind of disaster. Things fall apart.
118 Waterlilies (07)
119 *You’re Next (11)
120 Event Horizon (97)
121 Venom (18) I liked it, guys, way more than most superhero fare. Has a real sense of place and the place ISN’T New York!
122 Under the Silver Lake (18) RIP Night Call
123 *Blade Runner (82)
124 *The Birds (62) interesting to see now that I’ve read the story it came from
125 *28 Days Later (02) hits REAL FUCKIN’ DIFFERENT in a pandemic
126 Life is Sweet (90)

129 The Pelican Brief (93) 90s thrillers continue!
130 Dick Johnston is Dead (20)
131 The Bridges of Madison County (95)
132 Earth Girls are Easy (88) Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum are so hot in this movie, no wonder they got married
133 Better Watch Out (16)
134 Drowning Mona (00) trying for something like the Coen bros and not getting there
135 Au Revoir Les Enfants (87)
136 *Chasing Amy (97) Affleck is the least alluring movie lead...ever? I also think I gave Joey Lauren Adams’ character short shrift in my memory of the movie. It’s not good, but she’s more complicated than I recalled.
137 Blackkklansman (18)
138 Being Frank (19)
139 Kiki’s Delivery Service (89)
140 Uncle Frank (20) why so many FRANKS
141 *National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (89) watching with pals (virtually) made it so much more fun than the usual yearly watch!

143 We’re the Millers (13)
144 All is Bright (13)
145 Defending Your Life (91)
146 Christmas Chronicles (18) I maintain that most new xmas movies are terrible, particularly now that Netflix churns them out like eggnog every year.
147 Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse (18)
148 Reindeer Games (00) what did I say about Affleck??!? WHAT DID I SAY

152 Black Christmas (74)
THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)
I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough.
TV Series
01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).
02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?
03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock.
04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives.
05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end.
06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!
07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting.
08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**
09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!
10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening.
11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux.
12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed.
13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be!
14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.
