Things still rotten in the state of Roodeplaat
"Things still rotten in the state of Roodeplaat", a review of 'Death of a Whistleblower', by Ian Gabriel, on the Johannesburg Film Festival 2024.
RUN, there is no tomorrow. Emma Louw (Inez Robertson) discovers something she should not, in Death of a Whistleblower. Photograph courtesy Imdb.
WHEN A GOOD storyteller has the skill to worm their way into an established monolith of history, there’s always some meat for a fantastic story. But Ian Gabriel’s Death of a Whistleblower is a lot more than just a great yarn that cuts deliciously close…

Warrior: 'The Blood and the Sh*t' Recap
Even though Warrior first premiered last year, MFST writer, Jamie Nixon, is just now getting into the show during quarantine. As I'm sure we all are binge-watching both old and new shows. Like MFST writer, Samantha, binge-watching all of Psych or Kira catching up on shows like The Crown. Nevertheless, Warrior show follows a Chinese immigrant, Ah Sahm, in becoming a "hatchet man" for the most powerful Tong in San Francisco. The show's also executive-produced by Shannon Lee, as her late father, the iconic Bruce Lee, came up with the original concept. If you missed the first episode, catch up with Jamie's recap. With that said, here's what you may have missed in the show's fourth episode, which also happened to be inspired by The Hateful Eight.
Full Recap
The episode starts with Ah Sahm and Young Jun riding in a stagecoach amidst strangers. There's a cowboy as well as a young couple and they all hurl racial insults at them. The priest, later known as Father Flynn, tries to correct the others' views. He believes God loves the Chinese as much as he does the Caucasian. We see the stagecoach hit a few bumps but we're unsure why at first because the road they're traveling on is rather smooth. Little did they know that Harlan French's henchman, Lem, killed and replaced the usual driver.
Then, we find out that Ah Sahm and Young Jun are being sent to Nevada to fetch the corpse of a prominent Tong family member. The boys hated Nevada to say the least. Suddenly, the stagecoach stops in a small town. Elm claims the horses are tired and need to rest. Everyone dismounts and carries their valuables inside with them. Ah Sahm and Young Jun carry in the coffin, much to the dismay of the fellow patrons.

This is a movie that I got turned on to through social media by the director. Then I heard some people seeing the movie when it hit Shudder and I was intrigued. This is an interesting alien abduction film where our main character is into drugs. It has great visuals and soundtrack. Also a solid commentary. Have you seen this one? What did you think?
