La película cuenta el épico viaje de George, un niño de 9 años en el Londres de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuya madre Rita lo mandó a un lugar seguro en el campo inglés. George, desafiante y decidido a regresar a casa con su madre y su abuelo Gerald, en el este de Londres, se embarca en una aventura que lo enfrentará a enormes peligros, mientras una angustiada Rita busca a su hijo desaparecido.
