the true villains of Red Queen
you want to know who the true villains of the Red Queen series are? Julian Jacos, Elara Merandus, and Anabel Lerolan.
Especially Julian and Anabel.
Because at least people acknowledge Elara's involvement in Maven's mental abuse.
But Julian and Anabel. They had a hand in that abuse being actively ignored and no one ever called them out on it.
Ever.
Cal should've ripped them a new one.
It's because of them he lost his little brother.
They knew what whisper influence looked like. They saw it in his mother and they would've recognized it in Maven. They should've done something. They should've done the bare minimum of telling Cal's father what was happening to his other son.
But Julian was holding a child accountable for his mother's crimes and Anabel had blatant favoritism.

red queen characters and their fav video games:
mare: grand theft auto 💀🙏 any gta game she can get her hands on but it started with the chinatown wars on ds
cal: missed out on a proper childhood so is treating his inner child to fnaf for the first time and idk… something something about the story being an overarching narrative about a brother trying to pick up the remnants of his family through his grief… he says he doesnt get the lore butbhe kinda does. also had a goat simulator phase for the same reasons but minus the angst
maven: i would like to say some really cool psychological game but this mf would probs love playing chess against a cpu the most 💀 silent hill takes second place though (he’s obsessed with the idea of a purgatory of one’s own making… hmm… i wonder why 🤔)
evangeline: mario cart (she eats anyone who even THINKS of playing as peach)
elane: some sort of dating sim methinks… maybe like those ikemen games (let her be y/n)
ptolemus: fortnite for the dances.
kilorn: also fortnite but he has one-sided beef with ptolemus on there who keeps trying to add him. he also has the toph skin and keeps wiping the floor with his ass (ptolemus has the miles morales skin)
cameron: the attack on titan vr game where the world’s best comedy is originated from
gisa: what remains of edith finch. cursed family narrative goes hard with these folk.
shade: hes a legend of zelda girlie.
diana: she genuinely doesn’t play any game besides minecraft because she gets forced it by other people. but i know she’d love red dead i just don’t think she could be convinced into playing it (tragic)
iris: virgo versus the zodiac would speak to her, i feel. she has a secret weird side that only indie games could tease out of her.
wren: star stable!!! secret horse girl lore.
thomas: resident evil 4 because depending what you headcanon him as hes either feening for leon or ada or both.
coriane: definition of stardew valley girlie. but considering what she went through maybe yume nikki would be a game she keeps close to her heart (someone check up on her).
elara: if the sims 4 existed in the red queen verse it could have saved a lot of lives. maybe even her own.
sara: she wipes everyone in super smash bros you best believe it.
julian: castlevania: symphony of the night… mm the grip it has on this nerd loser… do not even breathe the name alucard around him he will give you the entire dracula lore starting with le fanu’s carmilla.
dane: detroit become human. played markus’ storyline and bro suddenly was made to govern a democratic republic for the people by the people.

Random Headcanon: Maven Calore hates old people.
Like dude had beef with his brother, his father, his uncle, his mother-in-law, his grandma, his ex-fiiancée and his wife. The ONLY older person he liked was his mom, Elara.
Which kinda makes sense since he craves to be seen and understood. Having an age gap would probably be a hindrance in forming a connection. Plus, the fact that Mare was only a month older than him (and probably Thomas too). Made it easier for him form a connection and him later, falling for them.
Just me, overthinking this: Maybe his dislike for the elder could also stem from the Royal Tradition. Where being born first/being older would mean they'll have everything: power, family legacy, love and admiration. A tradition that older members of the court uphold on the Royal family and among themselves.
Maven Calore being born second meant he was doomed to be seen as less. No matter what he did. Betraying his father, usurping the throne and wearing his father's crown. He was still Maven Calore, never to have "Tiberias" in his name, because he was and still is the second son of House Calore.

not many people will understand this (since these are two very different fandoms) but Julian Jacos and Remus Lupin are the same fucking character but in different fonts like
both literally teach the mcs of their books in a legitimate learning environment
become good friends with mc after being their teacher
are revealed to have lost people dear to them in the past
disappear for a bit after the first book they're introduced in only to re appear later on
are seen as dangerous for a part of them they almost never use for bad
have a complicated love life
wear old looking robes
are often associate with books
seem much much older than they actually are
they even has a similar look to them (light brown hair, little more skinny, ect)
helps the mc use/control a certain power
both have beef with a guy with black hair and an attitude
revealed to have relations to someone in a characters past
see? same character, different font

What do you think about Julian and his relationship with Maven in particular?
I like him and his relationship with Mare. Not as much as I used to though because I read other people's analyses of how shitty he was to Maven and I have to agree. Sure, we don't know exactly how he treated him throughout his childhood but if he knew how horrible Elara was, how hard was it to show this monster's child a little kindness? I'm not even saying he had to love him, since they weren't related, but he didn't have to go and unwittingly aid Elara's isolation/abuse tactics either 😕. During RQ Maven is still a teenager, so he's still a child in a way. Julian's resentment toward him strikes me as unbearably immature for someone who's supposed to be the "wise mentor". The character I wholeheartedly condemn is Nanabel. A rotten woman. She had no excuse to display such blatant favoritism to Cal.

bestie!! can you do some headcanons about minor red queen characters such as sonya, elane, heron, etc?
OOOH, YEAH!!
I'll try not to strech too far with these and I may or may not include Ptolemus because we see so much of him in the books, but he's not a pov character, so yeah.
.
.
Right off the bat, Rohr was a Queenstrial contestant that everyone questioned behind closed doors mainly because of her age.
Sonya met Evangeline through a meeting with Houses Samos and Iral. The girls barely got along, but could at least put up with each other enough to respect their statuses.
Olliver has won against Maven sparingly and lost to Cal more times than he cares to count. He does not take it personally.
Quick homophobia warning here, many members of House Iral were confused and didn't understand Robert's being a consort to the King, though they were sure to keep it all to themselves because he did give their house a good deal of power, being so close to the King.
Samson and Cal get into fights that end in draws. Where Cal fights using strategy, Samson uses mental brutality to either break his opponents or get them to injure themselves to the point he wins.
Ara Iral was quite close with Sonya and gave her some comfort after the Queenstrial.
Lucas was someone MANY of the Samos House members looked down on, but Evangeline and Ptolemus did silently grieve for him.
After the events of the series, Wren has helped Ptolemus and Evangeline through unlearning everything that was taught to them. Needless to say, it was WAY easier said than done.
Bree and Tramy do occasionally have nightmares about the Front, but it's something they've come to talk about with Cal as he's had those experiences.
Cal was the best man in Julian's wedding.
Gisa occasionally gets a phantom ache in her hand because of how long it had been broken.
The electrons, after the war, keep in touch and are close with one another.
Heron was admittedly nervous to have been chosen as Cal's bride because he would have probably won any and all duels in training. Still hurt when Evangeline was chosen, though.
Elane and Evangeline did get married, and Sonya attended.
Davidson did not have long to adjust to being a leader, but he did very well, if he does say so himself, thank you very much.
That's all I've really got, thanks for the ask!!!

Maven Calore was wasted as a tragic character.
Maven Calore as a tragic character was wasted. I'm not trying to say that he as a character was bad. If anything he was a good, well written character, one of the most well written characters in the Red Queen series. What I'm saying is that he as a character was truly wasted as an oversimplification of "people with mental issues are horrible monsters."
Throughout the series the point was made that Maven was a product of his mother's abuse. The same kind of abuse that was done to Cal's mother, Queen Coriane Jacos, which resulted in her having multiple miscarriages and taking her own life. Something that was known by multiple characters in the series aside from Mare. And yet no one does anything to try and help him. No one aside from Cal, his brother, and even then Aveyard doesn't have Cal do much aside from mentioning his want to help Maven and then having Davidson say he'll see if he can find anyone who might be able to help Maven with his mental issues, and then later on say that there is no one who could help him.
Which is the bare minimum.
This is not to excuse anything that he does in the series, and this is definitely not to justify shipping him with Mare, because I don't ship them at all.
That being said, Maven had so much potential as a tragic character. He could've had something akin to a redemption arc, perhaps not a redemption arc, but a healing arc of sorts. If Victoria Aveyard had taken the care to actually explore the character she created beyond the "mental issues = monstrous & evil." Because despite it being a difficult pill to swallow, Elara is not solely responsible for turning Maven into who he is in the series.
King Tiberias with his neglect and absence in Maven's life is one factor.
Julian Jacos holds a lot of the blame for the abuse Maven endures before the start of the series. Something that is largely ignored throughout the entire series. Much as everyone loves him. Julian like a lot of other characters in the series has his actions excused and brushed aside because he's on the good side. But Julian being Coriane's brother would have known what a person being mentally tortured by Elara looked like. He would've been able to identify the signs of her mental torture in Maven as they had presented themselves in his sister. Even though Maven is spectacular at masking his emotions and his behaviors, Julian would know what to look for in a person whose being manipulated by a Whisper. And while he has a justified hatred for Elara. He doesn't have a justified hatred for Maven. Just because Maven is Elara's son doesn't mean that Julian should've directed any of that animosity towards Maven to the point that they have a strained relationship by the time Mare gets there.
Seriously this man is like at least 40 and he's been having beef with a child since said child was born.
Elara obviously did a good job at isolating Maven from the rest of his family. Something Julian or Anabel should've noticed. Which is another thing.
Anabel's blatant favoritism. This is something that also get's excused and swept under the rug. It could be because the first time we see Anabel on page is in the second book when her son has been murdered and her grandson has been chased out of his country. But no one ever seems to bring up how easy it is for her to just disown Maven. She never shows any sort of sadness for who Maven's become or what's happened to him.
She never shows any sort of regret for allowing her grandson to be hurt so terribly to the point he would watch his father murder and feel nothing. She never shows any contempt for Elara in regards to her abusing Maven, and instead only for Elara usurping the throne. She doesn't even show any grief like Cal does when they finally capture Maven and he's on the path to the chopping block.
So it's not that big of a jump to say that she probably showed favoritism towards Cal even before the events of the book. She probably even encouraged her own son to be neglectful of his own son, probably because she didn't like Elara and she still saw Coriane as the true queen of Norta.
And yet no one seems to call her out on this? Not even Cal from what I remember. Which you would think that at least Cal or hell maybe even Mare who was kind of developing compassion and understanding for Maven later on in the series, would call out Julian and Anabel for their contributions on Maven's continued abuse.
Because even though Tiberias neglected his youngest son. He did show in his final moments to care about Maven. So if someone had just brought up their concerns about Elara and her relationship with Maven. A lot of trauma probably could have been avoided.
Which brings me back to my original point. Victoria Aveyard had a golden opportunity to take a character with mental issues, who was a victim of mental abuse and rehabilitate them.
She didn't have to excuse anything Maven did.
In fact if she did excuse all the horrible things that Maven did it would have cheapened the whole rehabilitation arc.
But she could have instead of writing a whole book of them looking for Newbloods, taken the time to have Cal and Maven, Mare and Maven, heal their respective relationship, give Maven a proper journey, and written a much richer story than just "people with mental health issues are evil"
Instead Maven Calore as a multifacted tragic character was wasted.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Discourse is always welcomed.

everyone: we absolutely need to KILL maven, we need to murder him, decapitate him, who even cares he just needs to be dead immediately
cal: hey guys i have a cool funky fresh idea. what if we gave him therapy help?
everyone:
cal: yknow because he’s mentally ill? he’s clearly been enabled and forced almost (when he was younger) to act out on everything too, he just doesn’t know any other way to function but what if we can teach him?
everyone:
cal: it just feels wrong to not try and heal the damage caused from the years of negligence and emotional abuse—
everyone: hes UNFIXABLE cal jeez poor thing is just in denial that he has to put his innately evil brother down

I still think about the fact that Maven has a favorite bakery🥖 in East Archeon that he visits from time to time and Cal who has a wicked sweet tooth🦷.
Image two awkward tweens, sneaking out of the palace to buy a two-tiered cake and devouring it in seconds. Then Julian later finding them covered icing and sound asleep. Ya know...kids. 🥲

Note: I love baking and knowing the Fire Bros canonically love sweets, warms my heart.

Do you suppose that Julian Jacos taught Cal and Maven when they were children, as he later taught Mare? If so, what do you think that classroom dynamic was like and how did it contribute to the animosity between Maven and Julian, as well as Maven's resentment of Cal? Did Julian dislike Maven from the moment he was born, or did he come to distrust Maven as he grew up?
Yes, yes, yes. This is important in my drafts for Shattered Glass (Maven goes to therapy). Julian couldn't help but subconsciously blame Maven for Coriane's death, even though he rationally knows this is ridiculous. However, rationality often means little in the face of our emotions. It's very ego wounding for Julian to find himself blaming a child for something he clearly didn't do, so he rationalizes it by finding fault in his every action. While Cal is bold and rambunctious, Maven is noisy and reckless. He's needy, a know it all, and Julian finds his stomach twisting every time Elara coos over him while Cal sits motherless. It's a difficult situation to be in, and Julian's in no position to process it properly. And nowhere is that more apparent than in his classroom, where Cal is gently nudged to the correct answers while Maven is sharply reprimanded. Elara pulls him out soon enough.
Can you tell I'm a psych student XD
