Trolls - Accidental Knight Branch AU (Field of Forget-me-nots part 1)
My hyper fixation continues and for some reason I got this idea while watching a Bug's Life. And i"m thinking of linking this to my Keith and Branch Brother hood Au (link to that post if interested - https://empressgeekt.tumblr.com/post/744629825487126528/trolls-branch-and-keith-brothers-au). I think I'm going to re-name it A Field of Forget-Me-knots Au. If they end up linked that is.
The Au would start before the first movie. Branch is still grey and on his own, with the exception of his little stalker. Keith had been following him for the past year, and branch had taken a reluctant liking to the kid. Pretty much becoming a big/little brother duo that no one in the village gets. Keith's habit of story telling, is encouraged by Branch, who buys the kid notebooks to put his idea on paper. During the summer evenings, Branch would help edit his grammar and spelling, while working on a latest trap as Keith read his latest chapters. The trolling's current story fixation, being one about a trolling knight who protects his village and wears a suit of armor in the brightest green leaves. Branch askes Keith where he found the inspiration for it, and Keith explains that it came to him when he was helping Branch with the alarm systems and predator preventions he made for the village. Branch is flattered when he learn that the kid thinks of him as a hero, but doesn't admit it.
When Keith's birthday rolls around. In addition to another note book, and some custom made drawing pencils, Branch decides to bring Keith's character to life. With all the mechanical know how, he learned from making traps and weapons, (and sewing skills thanks to Grandma), the grey troll can pretty easily fashion together a suit that is both functional and how Keith described it. With room for all the Gadgets that Keith gave his character. Which on the weapons side Branch kind of cheats due to him already having multiple back up bows and spears. He just paints those to match the suit. Keith is ecstatic to see Branch in the suit, and insists on Branch wearing it while they check the traps that day. Branch allows it, partially because it makes the kid happy, and partially because he wants to show off his gadget re-creations. Keith even calls Branch, "Forest Guardian" all through the walk. At some point, Branch falls into a flower patch, and pollen gets all over his hair making it turn into a maroon color.
Their on the last of their safety checks, this one just outside of the village borders, when suddenly the alarm strings go taunt and screaming is heard in the direction of the village. Branch tells Keith to run back to the bunker using their escape tunnels, and keith says that, "Forest Guardian is needed". Branch rushes off, completely forgetting that he's in a ridiculous looking suit, finding a rabid wolf charging through the middle of the village. Most the pods are too high for the predator to reach, but the trolls on the ground are done for...Branch grabs hold of the spear tied to his back.
Poppy is on the ground, trying to get as many trolls away from the wolf, but she's at a lost of what to really do. A predator like this had never gotten this close to the village, so she's scrambling. All she knows is that everyone is screaming and running, their afternoon song is ruined, then suddenly out of nowhere the wolf is taken down. Poppy looks up, and finds a troll with maroon colored hair, clad in armor of the brightest green, their hands gripping a spear that was impaled in to the base of the wolf's skull, killing it. In the corner of her eye, she sees one of the trollings, Keith, Call out "It's Forest Guardian!"
Branch is very uncomfortable with all the people suddenly staring at him, once the wolf is down. Then he hears Keith call out, and suddenly remembers he's in the costume. They don't know who he is. Still he doesn't like being the object of all there attention. Branch rushed back into the woods before Poppy has the chance to thank him.
Keith meets Branch back at the bunker. Branch immediately takes off the suit, and confronts Keith as to why he was in the village and not safe in the bunker. Keith said he wanted to see Forest Guardian in action. Branch retorts he's not Forest Guardian. Keith said he could be, and gets upset, because he based a the character off of branch, but the grey troll doesn't want to be a hero. Branch said he wasn't a hero. Keith says that he is, and recounts all he does for the villages protection and no one sees it! And they are all mean to branch. It makes the trolling frustrated, and this way they can be nicer to branch without Branch having to deal with them invading his personal privacy.
Eventually Branch gives in, after all the armor stopped him from getting hurt by the wolf, and it would make it easier to carry needed essentials. So when ever he goes after predators that get too close to the village he wears the suit. Keith promises to be Branch's man on the inside and reports to the grey troll on all the rumors that were spread about them. They have a good laugh over it.
Meanwhile, the village is set on fire with news of their new hero. People are gossiping and word of the "Forest Guardian" is spreading fast. And one troll in particular has become engulfed by the flames. Poppy has become obessed with the Forest Guardian. She wants to thank him, know who he is, and become his best friend. No she is totally not fangirling over him, like the twins tease. The snackpack is equally enthralled with the new village hero. Cooper, Biggie, And GD are impressed with how cool he looked, The twins have been making fan wear based on eye witnesses on the armor, Fuzzbert and DJ Suki want to know who his gear works, and Smidge wants to know where he learned how to take down a wolf. They are all willing to help Poppy find the Guardian. Creek is grateful for the new hero, but he is a little apprehensive about Poppy wanting to find him. After all he could be dangerous, and what kind of troll would use violence before friendship.
Nothing could stop Poppy's hunt. She askes everyone in the village what they know about the Forest Guardian. She sadly doesn't get much information. Until she asks Keith. The little trolling tells her all about how the Guardian lives out side of the village in the forest, and that he's been defending the village from predators for years, the wolf had been a rare instance when they snuck passed his defenses.
Poppy: Keith how do you know about this?
Keith: I see him. I go into the woods sometimes, he's always looking out for us.
Poppy: And no one knows? No one's thanked him!
Keith: He's shy and a little different. He doesn't think the village will accept him.
Poppy: He's our hero, we'd always accept him
Keith: he doesn't think so. He's seen how you treat other people who aren't like you.
Poppy: We aren't mean.
Keith: not actively.
Poppy: Look Keith Sweetie, you think you can get me meeting with him?
Keith agrees and leads poppy out into the woods. And calls out to the "Guardian". Branch and the trolling had come to an agreement that if he was refered to Guardian or Forest, then someone was with th trolling and Branch needed to play the part. Branch just didn't think Keith would bring the princess of all trolls. Poppy excitedly begins to ramble, until Branch clears his throat. In a deeper voice he sends Keith home, and asks what Poppy wants.
Poppy: We'll first to say thank you
Branch: I don't do this for thanks your highness
Poppy: Well, we're going to give it to you now that we know about you! Especially since you've been protecting all of us for so long.
Branch: How do you know about that?
Poppy: Keith told me.
Branch: Of course.
Poppy: Now, to show you how grateful the village is for all your work, we're throwing a party for you and officially inviting you-
Branch: Pass.
Poppy: WHat?
Branch: Apologizes for my brashness Princess, but I do not enjoy big loud parties.
Poppy: Why not?
Branch: You're larger celebrations attract a lot of attention from Predators your highness. Any part you through means a lot of work and stress for me. After years of this, I've lost my taste for such gatherings
Poppy's thrown by this, but in some form understands. The Forest Guardian's work is dangerous, he could've gotten hurt many times over while they partied. She had no idea that their parties attracted predators. She asks if their was any way to prevent that
Branch is shocked, all he had to do was save the village and put on a mask and suddenly people wanted to listen to him?! Taking advantage of this new found respect. Branch takes Poppy around the forest explaining how he keeps everyone safe from the forest, and just how vulnerable they all are. And that he deosn't want them to stop their fun, he just doesn't want anyone to get hurt or worse.
Poppy takes all this information, back home to her father, and suggests a few changes to make life better for both their guardian and the village. Peppy says that some of these suggestions would need to be consulted by the council however one of them they wouldn't need approval for. When talking with Keith the trolling had offered a less explosive way of thanking the Forest Guardian. Peppy agrees to knight the hero.
Word spreads quickly as troll village hadn't had a knight since before bergen town was established. So everyone is really excited. When keith tells Branch about the knighting thing, it's really surprising to the grey troll. After all he only took down one wolf their acting like he conquered the sun for them. Still the kid talks branch into going to the ceremony.
The ceremony goes smoothly although branch doesn't stay very long at the after party. Keeping up appearances is hard. Not to mention Poppy is all over him wanting to dance and find out his real name. He doesn't give it. Still some how rumors fly about hiw the princess and the new knight are smitten with each other. Keith teases branch about when ever they meet up. Branch is just worried about Poppy getting too close to him. After all in reality he isn't the hero they all think he is.
Life goes on, Poppy tries to reason for more safety measures but the council won't allow them. She goes to branch as the forest guardian for help. Shockingly its easier to standup and reason his ideals while in costume. He gets them to think about it, and Poppy offers lunch as a thanks. She disappointed that he won't take off his mask to eat, which leads to a conversation over why he hides his face. Once more rumors about the knight and princess pick up pace.
When the 20th freedom anniversary rolls around, Poppy trie to invite the knight but Branch declines saying that such a party 2as too big of a risk during predator season. Poppy doesn't head his word as Guardian or normal branch and goes trhough with it. You all know how this ends. Poppy goes to the bunker and asks Branch if he has seen Forst Guardian any where worried about if the Bergan had already gotten to him as he didn't show up to fight the bergen. Branch said he didn't know. As in canon Poppy stuffs the village in his bunker. Keith tells Branch to go after her as Guardian. They both know Poppy has 0 to none on survival skills, and this way no one will stumble onto his secret while in the bunker.
Poppy is at first thrilled when Forest Guardian joins her, however her excitement dwindles as she realizes that he's more of a grump then she thought their hero was. He doesn't join in on her songs and she's desperate to hear his voice. So also probs him on his back story, which Branch lies and says, "I don't have any."
Poppy: what how?
"Leta just sya that the story of the escape isn't as happy as everyone makes it out to be princess."
Cloud guy pissess him off as usual. And they can't spare Creek from getting "eaten". When freeing the snack pack, some of them ask for his autograph which, branch thinks their crazy for. Not the time and who has a pen on them at the moment anyway.
Branch still refuses to sing, with Bridget, and when cornered all he can say is that it tore his family apart. With a mix of truth and lies forest guardian says that he used to sing all the time with his family, but that made them prime targets for bergens. He became silent that's what saved him. "So forgive me if I'm not comfortable with singing in bergen filled town. I stay silent so that others don't have to."
The date goes the same, only Poppy is more giggly than in canon when Branch says she has a nice smile.
They both choke creek
True colors happens
then when confronting the chef, she doesn't react for Branch when she tries to for feed gristle. She reaches for Poppy. Branch jumps in and stabs the chef in the hand protecting the princess. Chef would then pull out a knife and with it smach brnahc into the far wall. Severally injuring him. Gristle orders for Chef to be captured. While Poppy runs over to Branch. She pulls off the mask and reveals the identity of the village hero. Shocking everyone.
Brnach remains unconscious for weeks afte the event. Poppy and Keith at his bed side. The village is rebuild. Peppy announced his retirement. And Poppy planns to create a team of well trained trolls to help bench protect the village.
When he does wake up, Branch is welcomed back home and offered the position of head of village security. If he wants it. With peace with the bergen established. Branch accepts the job. Creating the Forest Guardian's. Pop villages own defences force.
--'
Not sure what will happen in the othe movies yet, but branch is definitely sporting a new scar that JD will freak out about.

Keith sees Branch differently than how the others sees him. He just doesn’t understand why. Why do the other trolls look at him like that? Why do they talk about him like that? It's not nice.
Branch doesn’t have the heart to explain it.
These two have consumed my brain!

I have this head cannon that Keith only has his Dad (this is mostly based on like one line from the show) the line “ I’m gonna save my one hug for my dad” which on its own, doesn’t say a whole lot (maybe he just likes his dad more than his mom) but I like the idea that he only has one parent (probably some overworked troll who loves his son and all his weird little quirks)
I also like to think that Keith looks up to Branch as a paternal/big brother figure. Mostly from all those episodes where Branch is hanging out with Keith, getting them matching jackets, teaching him how to ride a critter bug, and so on and so on

Had an idea for a Human/Fantasy AU where Branch takes a changeling Keith in unbeknownst to him he is a changeling.
Branch got mistaken for a changeling a lot as a kid (as autistics did back then) so he didn’t want to assume Keith was one. Any weird rule or pattern Branch just thought of as a Keith thing.
The pieces do eventually fall into place but at this point Branch is seriously attached to the little guy who considers him his brother and just says ‘screw it’ and adopts him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Holly is concerned for her friend but he does look happier. Plus Keith’s never really done anything bad other than spook some bullies.
Unfortunately trouble ensues when the Queen of the Faries goes looking for her missing student and finds him.

Here is a little WIP of my trolls AU many of you inspired me like to creat my own AU @cumulonimbus-brainrot-central @msraptor @year2000electronics @djmurphy @thatbennybee @tamagoneko @phibsies @keebsification @grim-ghosty so tysm 🥺
It got based on one of my favorites Ghibli movie and a book called : When Marnie was there 💞😍
A beautiful story
In my AU :
*Brozone never break up and escape from the tree trolls with the others trolls and continued to perform.
*John Dory really try his best for being the leader but forgot he is also a big brother so he made a LOTS of mistakes toward his brother sometimes put to much pressure on them and is to hard with branch ...but he deeply love his brothers and just want the best for them and he work on it for become better for them .
*Floyd is still very close to Branch and is always here to calm his brothers when they arguing and comfort Branch when he is upset.
* Branch grows up apart for other trolling because John never really gives him the opportunity to make friends and become introvert, staying alone writing poems and songs or do puzzle 🧩.
*Viva living with her Dad and her little sisters, both will become friends with branch and her brothers
*Branch has very bad panic attacks in this AU !!⚠️⚠️
* when Young Rosipuff " Rosie " for short appear to Branch , the scene changes for make her and Branch appear in some place (familiar to him like Rosie pod or a song she humming ) in the trolls tree and when branch woke up he is back the village.
*Rosie say she not a angel or a ghost but more Branch making new friends and become less introvert, Rosie have to left him forever but don't tell Branch about it until the end .
* trolls and Branch's brothers think Rosie is Branch imaginary friend ( Creek made fun of it and John Dory is irritated by that ) except Poppy and Keith who believe him after finding a diary belonged to Rosie and try to figure out who she is.
If you have any questions about my AU don't hesitate to ask 😚😊👍🏼
What did think of it I can't wait to share it with you guys 🥺💞

what's your opinion on Keith?
A lot of people pair him and branch up as a big brother little brother duo. The Field of Forgetmenots au and Two of a Kind au for examples
I think I've seen the Two of a Kind AU! I think it's very cute!
I like the idea of Branch having a found family in Pop Village, and the idea of a kid who never bought into all the bad rumors, who cared about Branch even when he was grey is VERY cute.

Branch and Keith (Iilo and Stitch) au
You have corrupted me.........this is your fault..........THIS! Is for you........@empressgeekt.........
So, if you have no idea what this is about, you're gonna want to see this post. Now that you know what this is about, let's start with Branch.
Branch lives with his 4 older brothers, Spruce, Clay, Floyd, and John Dory. In this au, I pushed back when the band breaks up to a few weeks before Rosiepuff died so they didn't get too far away from home before they needed to go back. You see, when they left Rosiepuff was Branch's legal guardian. However, when she died, all the bros got a letter explaining everything and how they now have custody over Branch. This is practically a slap in the face for them and they all immediately go back to take care of Branch. Now, the bunker was never made since because bergens never existed in this au so, Branch would've never had a reason to make it. Here, Rosie died of old age and Branch did go grey for a bit since he had to deal with his brothers leaving and his grandma dying in the span of a few weeks. However, he did get his colors back once his brothers came back and they all made a silent agreement to never, EVER, leave each other again.
Meanwhile in space, Mosey was a miner for a small planet in the middle of nowhere. Mosey always longed for a child of his own but he was incapable of reproducing. He became so desperate, he turned to scientifically creating life (which is illegal in this universe since it's against the law of nature). He ended up making 9 'failed experiments' until he created one he was satisfied with. He decided to name the experiment K3-1H. He was so proud he made life and took care of K3-1H for a few years until the space bureau *basically space government/police* found out about his experiments. He quickly took K3-1H and put him in a pod that mimics an asteroid. He gave K3-1H his 9 other failed experiments that are in a dehydrated state and sent him off to earth before Mosey got arrested. K3-1H landed on a nearby mountain where he tried to find shelter and protect the other experiments before getting hit by a car and rolling down a hill, passing out as he instinctively changed his appearance to match whatever hit him.
Switching back to Branch, a few years went by and Branch is now 8. His brothers kept their promise and never left, taking care of Branch as they only have each other now. One day, Branch wanted to have some kind of best friend and wished on a shooting star for a baby brother (Not knowing that said star was K3-1H's pod). The next day, Branch somehow convinced his older brother Floyd to go to the nearby orphanage. Branch ended up running off to see the other kids as one particular troll caught his eye. The troll had the same blue hair and eyes he has and pale green skin. The reason that kid caught Branch's attention was because they noticed how different they looked. They had spines slightly sticking out their back and down their tail and they had some kind of bruise on their left side. The kid looked only a few years younger than Branch and they seemed to be extremely protective of whatever's in their pouch. Branch has heard the tale of the strings and he's even seen a few other genres, but he's never seen a troll like that before.
Keith has had a VERY, bad day. First, he has to leave his papa for some reason. Then he got hit by some sort of vehicle and passed out. This morning when he woke up, his side was hurting badly and he had to deal with his new appearance. He was a bit wary of the people around him. Everyone seemed a bit too nice for his liking. Now, he was currently sitting against the corner, growling at anyone who got too close to him. He's a bit glad they didn't take away his pouch, who knows what could've happened to his siblings if they had? He was scanning the room he was in and taking in any possible exits when he noticed someone staring at him intently. After a few seconds of eye contact he growls and marches over to them.
K3-1H: What do you want?
Branch: Hi! I'm Branch! What's your name?
K3-1H: *looks confused as they look up and down at him*........K3-1H
Branch: That's a bit hard, how about Keith?
K3-KEITH, looks at him confused for a moment before nodding. They're a bit uncomfortable with how fast this ki-BRANCH, is talking to him. They intently listen to him explain why they're here and what this place is when he gets an idea. Keith figures that if he can get adopted by some family, then he'll be able to get out of this place. Keith reluctantly asks if he can be adopted by Branch's family. Branch excitedly nods their head and practically drags Keith over to Floyd. Branch explains everything to Floyd and Floyd quickly agrees after they both give him puppy dog eyes. They end up adopting him and pretty quickly learn about how Keith doesn't have any records and is somehow fine after getting run over by a car. The 3 of them walk back home and explain everything that happened to their brothers. They're all a bit freaked out by Keith miraculously surviving getting hit by a car and only suffering from a bruise. After a few months go by, they quickly learn about Keith's weird anatomy and quirks. They're all used to it by now, so it wasn't too surprising for them to learn about Keith's backstory. The only part that gets a reaction out of them is when Keith explains that the weird balls in his pouch were 'failed experiments'. Even then, Branch was elated to know there were more people like Keith he could befriend. Branch and Keith end up spending the next day to bring the other experiments to their original state.
Branch: Hi, i'm Branch! What's your name?
???: uh, B0-M
Branch: Ok. How about.....Boom!
Boom: *looks confused* uh...
The rest of Kismet in the background: Just say yes, it'll make it go a lot faster.
WOW! That was a lot. This is probably one of my longest posts. So, here's a few more facts about this au that isn't plot related. Kismet IS in this au and they're all aliens! I like to think Mosey started to make experiments around the time Branch was born, so Kismet will be around Branch's age. While Keith is based on Stitch, I like to think some of his traits and abilities are different than Stitch's. That goes for the rest of Kismet as well, they aren't particularly based on any character from Lilo and Stitch so i'll have to make some original stuff about them. I feel like Keith would get jealous when they see Branch getting along with other people because of how quickly they got attached to each other. When Keith starts to get more included with Branch and Kismet's activities, he does get attached to Kismet as well and starts to see them like older brothers along with Branch. I sincerely apologize there isn't a lot of Brozone in this post, I promise I will get to them at some point. The rest of the experiments are probably going to be oc's. In the end, the one thing I can guarantee is a fact, is that @empressgeekt started all of this so you can blame them.

Could you answer ALL the questions for pady
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING ABOUT PADDY, I'D LOVE FOR YOU TO GET TO KNOW MY FUCKED UP OLD MIDDLE AGED MAN.
Ask Game for someone's OCs
✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name?
Babyname website, ten most popular boys names in Ireland all time. I don’t know if I picked his surname from a similar/the same site, but I must assume so. Et voilà – Patrick “Paddy” O’Neill!
🌼 - How old are they? (Or approximate age range)
Born on the 2nd of May 1965 in canon. He’s 48 in Irish Problems, the first story in the mainseries, which is usually the age range he also appears in in most AUs.
🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?
Ohhh, does he ever! My man used to be quite the charmer in his youth! Not really putting the love in love interest, but he had a ONS with Daisy Grey, the mother of Shane Grey, who’s part of Charlie’s gay social circle after he left school. He’s also had a few flings with Þóra, @swabianmapley’s lovely OC and one of the Icelandic subordinates. The list could go on - Ben didn't call him a louser for nothing!
But the woman he ends up dating (if I'll get this far in the main story and stick to it) is Donella Ramsay. She's a middle school physics and english teacher from Glasgow he met on a bender in Dublin, where she has relatives. It's ... an odd match, but it works out for both of them.
Shoutout to his childhood/teenhood friends Kilian MacLeod and Angus O'Malley though! I don't ship them in canon, but I love a good AU with Kilick, Padus or a Derry Trio OT3. Welcome to the worst Polycule this side of the Foyle, maybe in the entire North West.
🍕 - What is their favorite food?
Honestly, I think nothing would top a good full Irish breakfast roll for this man. Something as big as his entire hand, stuffed with eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms ... only acceptable way to start the day.
💼 - What do they do for a living?
Be a menace to society! No literally, he's in the mob. Right hand to Harry O'Connel, the biggest shark in the Irish tank. Aaron O'Connel, Harry's father, was who picked Paddy off the Dublin streets and offered him to work for him. Ain't much of a living with the guilt his job produces but well, someone's got to protect the kids now and make their life cushy.
🎹 - Do they have any hobbies?
He plays the guitar! His father taught him. He also branched into other string instruments and is pretty good at the Banjo. His fiddling is good enough for government work. Needless to say, not only does he play, he also sings.
🎯 -What do they do best?
Being a calm mediator, to be honest. Everyone else always looks to him, due to his experience and Paddy's here to get shit done. Doesn't mean he's always calm or hides his emotions particularly well, but he's determined like no other and very good at both executing orders and giving orders. He's so splendid at being a father to be honest, it's a shame he never had any kids on his own, but doesn't matter - he loves Harry, Soph and Charlie to bits. Adopts every lost kid in need of a dad he can find, giving as much love as his big body can store.
🥊 -What do they love to do? What do they hate to do?
Loves to be a bastard with his children, a carefree ne'er-do-well, hates that to live that life he routinely makes it worse for a hundred other families who're just struggling to get by. Paddy is filled to the brim with guilt, believes God no longer listens to him and that there's no redemption for a man like him.
❤️ - What is one of your OC’s best memories?
Night out in the pub with friends in Derry; Kilian, Angus, a few others - and the daughter of the Orangeman who's none the wiser that his daughter is hanging with at least one Catholic and Rotten Prods and getting shifted by the latter.
✂️ - What is one of your OC’s worst memories?
Hearing about Kilian's death after the funeral already happened. Kilian's older brother Keith didn't want him there.
🧊 - Is their current design the first one?
It is! I rarely change designs, mostly because the hugest chunk of my characters exist solely as personality and a vague idea of a physical appearance for months, if not years. Paddy had his design pretty quickly because I had to describe him, but I love it anyways. Especially the fact that he's 2 m tall and built like a brickwall.
🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?
I needed a right hand man for my mafia story and I knew vaguely that there's Protestants in Northern Ireland. That's it and as I learnt more and more about the actual situation and nuances of Irish history and identity, it just has made Paddy more and more interesting.
🌂 - What genre do they belong in?
Born to be in a romantic comedy or a GOOFY heist movie, forced to be in Angela's Ashes meets The Godfather.
💚 - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?
Cishetero man as they come, though I make exceptions in AUs for Derry Trio OT3 shenanigans babyyyy. To be fair, too, he's moved in overwhelmingly queer circles due to the job and the kids in the past years that he's not at all fazed by the myriad of gender expressions and sexualities this world got to offer.
🙌 - How many sibling does your OC have?
None! However, he has/had a cousing called Caoimhe, who he loved so dearly, pretty much like an older sister. However, after his aunt/her mother died in a bombing, the family moved away and he never heard from her again.
🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?
Very good! Both of his parents died in the 80s, sadly, but he loved them very much and they did him. They also were both rather old parents (William O'Neill was born 1917, Davian O'Neill in the early 1920s), so it's sad they died so young regardless, but not out of the clear blue sky. As I said, his father taught him how to play guitar and Davina also always looked out for her son. Paddy wouldn't have left Derry if one of his parents were still alive.
🧠 - What do you like most about the OC?
THE GHOOOOSTS, Paddy is so fucking haunted! He has lived three lives and to not lose the third one, he is willing to dig himself and everyone a grave without a bottom. Willing to do and encourage the worst things out of a deep, deep sense of love. He lost his cousin, his parents, Angus moved to London and then a bomb wrecked his and Kili's flat, so he walked out of town, left Kilian behind who died in the mid 2000s in a car crash. He got taken in by Aaron, traded his morals for a new family and helped raise Aaron's kids. Then Freya, Aaron's wife, dies in childbirth, Aaron's other right hand Ben gets shot in 2006 and Aaron accidentally poisoned in 2009. Once again, Paddy is the last man standing. So if anything happened to Harry, his sister Sophie or Harry's best friend Charlie, he'd kill everyone and then himself. No hyperbole. His actions in Irish Problems underscore that.
✏️ - How often do you draw/write about the OC?
Pretty much any time I work on the mainseries. He isn't in every AU and I also write a lot of one-shots/other fanfics about entirely different corners of the world that have nothing to do with him, but Paddy never strays far from my mind. Since I've been rewriting Irish Problems since 2022, rarely a month went by without writing about him.
💎 - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?
I've toyed with the idea of killing Paddy a lot, because he'd be potent drama. But at the end of the day, I could never go through with it because it breaks my own heart far too much.
💀 - Does your OC have any phobias?
Don't think he likes anything about bombs, but that's less of a phobia and more ... being traumatized by a civil war. He's got over his dislike of guns for the same reason, but still loathes most big guns and will not use anything automatic unless you held the man himself at gunpoint.
🍩 -Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival?
Ben was always the man to pick fights and hold grudges, so Paddy doesn't really have any personal nemesis or rivals. Team England can be counted as such, simply because they're Team Ireland's biggest antagonists, but he has no particular bone to pick with Arthur (unlike Harry), Robert (unlike Charlie) or Tahir.
🎓 - How long have you had the OC?
Since 2013! "Like Father Like Son", how the entire story universe is called, was a Hetalia AU I created for an art trade. I needed human OCs for the story and that is how he came about.
🍥 - What age were you when you created the OC?
14. Insane shit.
Here's a drawing of him done by @pyromaniacqueen!

First Lines Game
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most  recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
Thank you for thinking of me, @educatedinyellow!
Skipping the ficlet collections, my last ten works begin:
1. The secret panel was secret only to human eyes; a wolf would sniff it out in a moment. (Brother of Wolves, Come Ye Hither, The Flight of the Heron, Keith/Ewen, psychic wolves.)
2. "What. Is that," Miles flatly asked, coming to a stop just inside the door of Ivan Vorpatril's lavish bachelor apartment. (Report on an Incident Concerning a Botanical Specimen from Eta Ceta IV, Vorkosigan Saga, Miles/Ivan, sex pollen.)
3. Bush returned to Chichester happier than he left, warmed by a memory that not even pelting rain in an open waggon could extinguish. (An Ember Against Winter's Cold, Hornblower novels, Bush/Hornblower, developing relationship.)
4. "No, you just sit right there. I'm cooking tonight.” (If Food be the Food of Love, Leverage: Redemption, Harry/Eliot, drabble.)
5. "You can't hide from Styles forever, you know," Horatio said, and had the pleasure of hearing William, turned out in purser's slops like one of the hands, growl in disapprobation. (Robe of Misrule, Hornblower TV, Bush/Hornblower, crossdressing, pwp.)
6. Laurent would allow no other to claim the honour of bandaging the wounded arm. (Seaweed and Apple Blossoms, The Wounded Name, Laurent/Aymar/Avoye.)
7. The full moon brought not only Brown in his skiff with the month's supplies, but a second man — Hornblower's first visitor since the beginning of his self-imposed exile. (Hornblower’s Lost Honour, Hornblower novels, Bush/Hornblower, West Indies AU.)
8. "By God," Captain Bush exclaimed. "Lord Hornblower marooned himself? On purpose?" (With Friends Possessed, Hornblower novels, Bush & Brown, prequel to Lost Honour.)
9. Major Windham’s grave is well. (A Peaceful and a Beautiful Spot, The Flight of the Heron, Ewen & Francis, post-canon.)
10. "Your landlady is mean with the blankets," William observed. (With Surprising Quickness, Hornblower TV, Bush/Hornblower, only [enough blankets for] one bed, pwp.)
On the whole, I put a strong emphasis on orienting the reader in the first line. If it’s an AU, establishing the branch-point and what will be a significant element of the branching; for non-AUs, establishing an element that’s going to be key in the coming story. A few of these opening lines don’t do that as well as I would like, but in general, I believe in giving my reader a nice strong lead, so even if they’re not dead-sure right away about what I’m doing, we can still get through the opening paragraphs together without too much uncertainty or stumbling.
Tagging: @tgarnsl, @cedarboots, @thehappyreturn, @chiropteracupola, @acrossthewavesoftime, and anyone else who would like to play!

Trolls - Accidental Knight Goes on a World Tour (Field of Forget-me-nots Part 2)
Okay so I didn't think I was going to make a part two (or three depending on how you count the posts, as The Keith and Branch Brothers AU now happens in the same AU), but here we are.
Part one of this au, is that Branch has taken Keith in as a younger brother, and for Keith's birthday, he dresses up as a character, The Forest Guardian, from one of the trolling's story. While in costume Branch saves the village from a wolf and becomes a knight with out anyone know who he was. Then the events of the first movie.
Link to that first post if interested - https://empressgeekt.tumblr.com/post/745937705603661824/trolls-vigilante-branch-au
Now on to this part's summery.
We pick up three months after the first movie. Branch is fully healed from his wounds from the Chef, but he isn't unmarked from it. Sure, he has his colors back, but they fluctuate. And he has a scar from her knife. It runs up his leg, torso and across his face. Thankfully the blade missed his neck otherwise he'd be dead, but it's a hard thing to hide. Especially since he's been blinded in one eye, because of it. Keith thinks it looks cool though, and writes the events of his scaring into his Guardian book.
The defense force that Poppy and Peppy had placed him in charge of is developing well enough. Branch has put together a training course for new recruits and per his recommendation a main station, outer-security wall with lookouts, and outposts further from the village were built. Once that was complete volunteers were being taken. Smidge volunteered for it right away, and excelled during her training. Branch makes her his second in command.
Over all Life hasn't changed that much ins Pop Village, the only differences being that they were at peace with the bergens and some trolls have new jobs. When Branch and Smidge aren't working, they're hanging out with the SnackPack (or taking care of Keith in Branch's case). Even before Poppy was crowned queen, she and Branch work more closely, Branch is in charge of village safety and many of his decisions need to have approval of royalty. Poppy also asks Branch to train her, during which Branch's crush develops beyond a fancy as watching Poppy shoot a bow and arrow like robinhood is very hot to him. Keith teases him everytime he blushes around the Queen.
Life continues on. Guy Diamond has Tiny, which I'm not sure if I should make Branch the midwife for or not (because Branch is trained in this canonically if this deleted clip is anything to go by Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0ioxfzsKv4&list=LL&index=2). Then Debbie shows up. Branch is kind of upset that Peppy never told Poppy, and by extension him, about the other tribes. If they were a threat they were something he needed to know about. Poppy still believes that Barb wants to reunite the trolls and Branch still chooses to go with her to keep her safe. Once more clad in his Forest Guardian attire. He leaves Smidge in charge of the guard and Peppy in charge of Keith.
Poppy doesn't kick all the weapons off the Balloon this time, because Branch packed her bow with the other spears and getting rid of it would be mean throwing away her newly prized weapon. Half way through their flight to symphonyville (I can not spell), they hear a very small sneeze. Keith has snuck aboard, not biggie. Branch is very frustrated with this, after all his kid is currently on a mission that he feels could be extremely dangerous.
Keith's reasons for sneaking aboard, he wants to start his guard training early and that Branch needs a wingman, because watching him crush over the queen is starting to get embarrassing. Branch can feel his hair turning white through out this interaction.
At symphonyville, Keith is clinging to Branch's leg the whole time. The destuction is like that of Pop village after Chef attacked. They get the whole story from Pennywhisle, and need to decide what to do next. Branch immediately wants to go home and fortify defenses. Poppy agrees, but wants to reach out to the other tribes to warn them at the very least and maybe form alliances in case of attack. Branch think that their military is till too fresh for that, and way to small. Poppy continues to argue her side and eventually Branch is forced to agree.
Country territory is closest, so they head there. Branch talks Poppy out of doing the pop medley because it would probably offend the country trolls. Keith's on his side too, as they both know what it's like to have things they don't like shoved in their face. This is how the country trolls are and they like it. Poppy reluctantly agrees but she still thinks that the country trolls need cheering up. They meet with Delta Dawn and begin to share information they have regarding Barb. Keith's role in this is to distract Clampers. The Children get along like water and rain (honestly these two would be great friends they could totally bond over biting people). Delta mis-takes Keith for Poppy and Branch's son, which they quickly correct with an awkward laugh. Delta still doesn't want to involved, so Branch and Poppy leave. but not before meeting up with a "Country" trolls named Hickory, who offeres to boat them to Funk territory.
This tips off Branch and Keith as suspicious, after all since when did Hickory know about where they were going and what they were doing, but Poppy doesn't notice and quickly agrees. Keith still enjoys the boat ride, so Branch is watching the trolling with one eye, and Hickory with the other. When Chaz shows up, Branch manages to pull out his bow and shoot the bounty hunter's instrument away, due to his suit covering his ears. After checking Keith over, he hears Hickory mention bounty hunters and pulls Poppy aside. they Have an argument with Branch pointing out everything he's be noticing and how Poppy can't just keep dismissing him. It's his job to keep her safe and the rest of the Pop trolls they need to work together. Then he asks if something else it going on, because once she knew he wasn't just spouting paranoid rants, she didn't have a problem listening to his suggestions. Poppy cracks and breaks that she's worried about being a good leader after all the good her father did, how could she ever measure up to that. Branch says that he's not sure what will make her great, but that a good leader should listen, and that maybe she's putting her father on a pedestal, he isn't the perfect king she thinks he is. Poppy starts seriously crushing on Branch after that.
The ride continues. Hickory and Branch talk about the knight's feelings for Poppy, and Branch just says it isn't the right time she's dealing with too much right now. On the flip side, Keith talks to Poppy about her new found crush on Branch. The future couple might be blind but Keith sure ain't and he's willing to do anything to make his brother happy.
They get sucked up into vibe city, with Branch nearly shooting Hickory with an arrow after he got in his the face with a guitar. Poppy and Keith end up sharing a bubble, as they were taken up to the city. Keith quickly charms Essence and Q, and they complement, Branch on his child rearing. Keith Also crawls into Branch's hair after hearing Cooper's story with his twin, knowing that it could hurt the knight on an emotional level.
One history lesson later...
"Wait if we split everyone apart, are we bad guys?" Keith said.
"Not us, bud, but some people who were like us did. We need to do better then them okay?" Branch would say.
Poppy Branch and Keith get caught in the same bubble during the escape, with Hickory separated form them. Poppy says she doesn't know what to do. Branch tells her they need to go home to protect every one. They need to be there for the last stand against Barb. Poppy finally listening, agrees only for them to be attacked by the Reggaetón trolls and K-pop gang before they can leave. Branch tells Poppy to take Keith and run. Branch pulls out his spear ready to fight when K-pop grabs him, que dance battle...
Poppy runs with Keith, the trolling upset in her arms. They run into Hickory, where Poppy rants about everything and losing Branch pulling the pop string form her hair, que hickory and dickory reveal. Keith says he called it.
Barb comes in and takes Poppy. She tries to mockingly dote on Keith only for him to bite her. She's impressed, and says she didn't think a popsqueak like Poppy could have such vicious offspring, and that the kid must take after his dad. Poppy's too mad to correct Barb, just fighting against the guards to get Keith back. Branch told her to protect the trolling, and she will do so. She never lets go of Keith when their in the cell.
Both Poppy and Keith are horrified when Branch Jumps in front of them. Keith even starts crying, thinking he'd lost his brother for good. The sound of Keith's wails make Branch hesitate and starts to fight back against the power-cord's power. He'd too busy to fighting himself to obey Barb's orders. Still Poppy stuffs gumdrops into her and Keith's ears, and then runs escapes from the cell listening to Keith's insturctions to pick the lock. Poppy Jumps down, and charges at Barb stealing the guitar. Keith Bites the rock queen again. The guitar is destoryed and branch is freed from the mind control. To Branch's horror he wakes to his little brother and the woman his loves already fully grey.
Just sing happens and poppy, gives Branch a kiss on the cheek, finally confessing. All the leaders get together, to plan for repairs of their homes, and how prevent this situation from happening again. Trollstopia is born, and suddenly Branch needs to figure out how to train other types of trolls for the guard.

I'm curious about everything, but do please tell us about Literal Heron Husbands! (Is it the husbands that are literal, or is it the herons?)
It's the herons that are literal! This one is a Flight of the Heron AU based (loosely) on the Crane Wife folktale that I may or may not ever finish and publish.
Snippet here (which is most of the WIP):
It was the noise of a shot that caught his attention. Ewen looked up sharply— Lachlan, on the far side of the valley, was lowering his gun.
“What was that?” he called.
“A great bird,” was Lachlan’s faint reply, “a heron, I am sure. I only clipped it.”
“Not another heron!” Ewen frowned, riding closer. “You will depopulate the whole country of them, if you go on this way. But I suppose we had better find the spot where the poor creature fell. If we do find it alive, I forbid you to kill it, Lachlan!”
He grumbled, but off they went, cresting the top of the hill and picking their way through the stones on the far slope. Ewen’s horse was nimble, raised a Highlander just as he himself had been, and it was a graceful, easy descent.
At the foot of the hill was a small burn, which ran into a thicket of gorse and low-boughed trees. He scanned all along the bank, but there was no sign of the heron— no piercing cry, and no still gray shape among the heather. Tugging at the rein, he turned the horse downstream and rode a little ways toward the thicket. This effort yielding no more success than before, he was about to turn back and ask Lachlan to look further afield when he heard a faint, but distinctly English, “God damn!”
It had come from under the trees. There was a gap in the thicket nearby, and he urged his horse through it, all thought of the heron forgotten. Branches and twining vines snagged at his plaid; there was no real path, so they shouldered through from open space to open space, Ewen listening intently for another curse.
He heard a twig snap to his left, and turned at once, ducking under the branch of a tree. They emerged into a claustrophobic little clearing, overshadowed by branches— but light shone through one gap caused by a broken bough onto the scarlet coat of an English officer.
The man was lying on the ground, propped up against the base of the tree. His hat and wig were a little askew, and his uniform had upon it smudges of dirt; one leg was stretched out before him, and Ewen saw bright new blood creeping up his stocking. When the Englishman saw Ewen his eyes narrowed, and he made a mighty effort to get to his feet.
“How came you here, sir?” he snapped.
“I live here, sir,” was Ewen’s bemused reply. The strangeness of the circumstances had ruffled him enough that he added, “Have you seen a heron hereabouts?”
The Englishman stared. “What?”
“My brother believes he has shot a heron. Have you seen any bird fall from the sky?”
There was a long silence, in which the man sized him up with wary hazel eyes and pretended his leg was not trembling beneath him.
“I— yes,” he said at last. “It fell through the trees, just here. It startled my horse.”
He made a sharp gesture that encompassed the broken branch on the ground, the absence of horse, and his wounded leg.
“I am sorry for it,” said Ewen. “May I ask your name, sir?”
The Englishman did not bow. “Captain Keith Windham, of the Royal Scots.”
“Ewen Cameron,” returned Ewen, and dismounted his horse.
Captain Windham drew his sword.
“Oh, come,” Ewen said, really disappointed, “I had rather not fight a wounded man.”
“I am more than capable, wounded or no,” the Captain replied stiffly.
“I see you are a man of honor; you need not prove it to me.”
When this met with no answer, Ewen sighed.
“Do at least tell me what happened to the heron. Is it dead?”
“No,” said Captain Windham, “it flew off, along with my horse and my entire company. Your sword, sir— unless you are afraid.”
That was a low blow, and Ewen had just laid his hand to the hilt of his weapon when something on the ground caught his eye. He bent to pick it up, certain that the impeccably honorable Captain Windham would not attack a stooping man.
It was a feather, long and gray-blue like slate, or the sky before a storm. There was a smear of blood on its edge.
“This must be from the heron, poor fellow,” he said. “I am glad it escaped with the rest of its feathers. Still, this one I shall keep, as spoils of war.” He tucked it into his sporran. “Now, sir, must we fight, or will you return with me to my house and let me give you shelter?”
Captain Windham’s face, pale to begin with, was drained of color.
“No,” he said dully, “I cannot fight you, Mr. Cameron, as you well know.”
This was a very sudden about-face, but if the Captain had seen sense Ewen had no intention of arguing with him.
“I am glad to hear you say so. Come, you shall have my horse, and we will go and find Lachlan together.”
He helped Windham mount the horse; the Captain made no move to resist, his every limping action bespeaking resignation.

Quick HC for my Keith and Grey Branch brothers AU that I've still yet to come up with a name for!
Branch calls Keith Bug/Little Bug sometimes
Branch started calling him that because Keith kept following him and would not leave him alone(like a bug), so he'd say things like, "Ah, the little Bug has returned to bother me." or "You sure do ask a lot of personal questions, Bug." And even "Alright, Little Bug, it's time for you to Shoo away now."
Tumblr media
But when he started getting used to Keith, becoming fonder of him, and seeing him as a little brother, it changes more to a fond little nickname. "That was a good one, Bug" "Thanks for the help today, Little Bug" "I see the Bugs got some extra energy today!" And, "Dont worry about Bug."
Tumblr media
Keith loves the nickname! He loved it from the beginning! He loves it so much that he slowly gains an interest in learning about bugs. When they're walking around the forest, and they see/pass by a bug, Keith will ask questions about it and sometimes try to get close to it. This is normally fine with Branch, as long as he doesn't wander off. But sometimes the creatures aren't very safe, and oh my hair! Put that down Keith, if that bites you, you'll get SO sick!

                                     PREVIEW: part one
The Galra, a hostile nation of magic-wielders, have finally been banished from the kingdom’s borders. The war is over, once and for all. The Crown City is more determined than ever to re-establish peace to its people when a mysterious boy is discovered in the outlands. Keith is taken under the wing of the Royal Guard, where he is to be groomed for knighthood, but his inherent and untamed magical abilities have branded him a threat, alienating him from the only family he’s ever known — until he meets Lance, a rambunctious young prince in search of a playmate.     But as the boys grow older and feelings grow stronger, their days of childhood whimsy evolve into a deeply unshakeable bond; one that is soon tested by rumors of a Galra counterattack and perhaps even a state-mandated betrothal to assuage political tension. Now, with both hearts and lives on the line, the two lovers find themselves at a complicated crossroads: duty or desire?
Language: English  |  Rating: TBD  |  Art Credit: here

GENRE: Royal AU, childhood friends-to-lovers
PAIRING(S): Keith/Lance
                                                     . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
A flash of light comes blazing through the half-parted curtains, followed by a violent clap of thunder that rattles the floorboards and, consequently, startles the young prince awake.
Lance sits up with a gasp, clutching at the elaborately embroidered duvet, keeping it tucked under his chin for protection. The bedroom goes pitch black again, save for the bluish glow of a star-shaped nightlight in the corner, but the storm continues to rage outside. He can hear rain beating behind his window and the blustery sway of tree branches as they scrape up against the glass like fingernails.
“Marco,” Lance whispers into the darkness. His brother remains fast asleep, snoring softly, on the other side of the room. “Marco.”
Still no response. Lance spends a moment rooting around under the covers for his raggedy stuffed lion, then squeezes it close to his chest as he scuttles over to his brother’s bed and shakes him urgently by the shoulder.
“Go away,” Marco grumbles into his pillow.
“But the noises!” insists Lance. “What if it’s a—”
“It’s not a monster, it’s just a storm. Quit being such a baby.”
Lance puffs up at that, bottom lip jutting out with defiance. He’s fully prepared to remind his brother that he turned seven last month — and is, therefore, no longer a baby by any means, thank you very much — when another loud noise cries out in the dead of night; except this time it’s unlike the rumbling thunder and howling winds. It’s a mighty whoosh of the front doors being flung open downstairs. Wet footsteps slapping against the marbled foyer. Low, angry-sounding voices.
“Marco,” says Lance, shaking him again. “I mean it, I think there’s something—”
“Cut it out, Lance,” Marco says, and then swats at the younger boy’s hand with an agitated grunt before rolling away to face the wall.
But the noises persist. If anything, they’re only getting louder, more conspicuous, and Lance’s curiosity is not so easily brushed aside. So, bracing himself, with his trusty lion in tow, he pads across the room and pokes his tiny head through the door.
Across from him, Lance’s older sister is doing the exact same thing, peering furtively down the dimly-lit corridor in a satin nightgown, her hair done up in curlers.
  “Ronnie—”
“Shh!” she hisses at him, a finger pressed to her lips in warning. “It’s Papa.”
Lance’s mouth parts into a bewildered little ‘o’ shape as Veronica proceeds to slink out of her room and toward the staircase. At the opposite end of the hall, he spots Coran, the royal family advisor, where he appears to have dozed off in the middle of watch duty again, slumped over in a chair, his big orange mustache wiggling with every exhale, and so Lance decides to tiptoe after his sister.
The Citadel’s east wing is a winding labyrinth of passageways and gilded alcoves, but the further they creep into its bowels, the clearer the commotion becomes. One of the many chamber doors has been left slightly ajar, a strip of lamplight pouring out from the gap, along with their father’s voice, hushed and stern.
“—What on earth were you thinking, Takashi?”
They both scamper up to the door, peeking inside. It’s a thin opening, just barely enough space to make out glimpses of shifting bodies: their father paces around a large wooden conference table, his brow drawn tight, while Shiro, in contrast, stands perfectly still like the soldier he was born to be. There’s a small boy hovering at his side in tattered clothes, similar to Lance in size, and his face is obscured by a curtain of damp fringe.
“I found him in the outlands, alone, with nowhere to go and no way to survive,” Shiro answers firmly. “That’s what I was thinking, your Majesty.”
“You should know better,” the king fires back. “After everything that’s happened, you, of all people, should know better than to invite danger into this household.”
“He’s not dangerous,” says Shiro. “He’s a child.”
  “No, he’s Galra.”
At that, Veronica inhales a sharp breath, then immediately clamps a hand over her mouth. Lance is startled, too, but only because he knows he should be. Only because he’s heard grown-ups murmur that word when they think no one is listening, like it’s something terrible and blasphemous. This boy right here looks like neither of those things.
Through the crack, Lance can see Shiro lift his arm; the mechanical one. “And so am I, now,” he states. “The very magic that this kingdom fears, the very magic that’s now a part of me, is what saved my life.”
A pause. “That’s different,” the king growls. “It was our only option.”
“Well, pardon me, your Majesty, but then what is his only option?” argues Shiro, pointing at the boy. “Death?”
“Death,” Lance echoes, scandalized, his grip on his stuffed lion tightening. He reaches for his sister’s ruffled sleeve and tugs. “Ronnie, did you hear that, he just said—”
“Lance,” she shushes, “be quiet or they’ll hear—”
The sudden halting of footsteps lets them know they’ve been caught. But before either of them can think to run, the chamber doors are being swung open wide and their father’s long shadow is looming from above. His expression, however, has been transformed into one that Lance recognizes; gentle and warm.
“Aha,” he chuckles. “I thought I heard some little mice scurrying around these halls.” Swiftly, the king scoops Lance up into his arm and takes Veronica’s hand with the other. “Back to bed, you two. What would your mother have to say if she knew you were up this late, hm?”
Shiro, in the background, says, “Your Majesty, I—”
“We will finish this discussion in the morning, Captain Shirogane,” the king replies tersely. He doesn’t even turn halfway to meet the other man’s eyes. “Right now, I have a family to take care of.”
  “Yes,” mutters Shiro, nodding. “Understood.”
As Lance clings to his father, peering curiously over the top of his shoulder, he discovers that the strange Galra boy is staring at him with the darkest, saddest eyes that Lance has ever seen in his life. It makes Lance’s skin tickle, being looked at like that.
  So, he waves.
The boy freezes in place for a moment, but eventually waves back, looking a bit ashamed, as if he’s not sure whether he should be doing it. When he does, though, Lance notices that the skin of the boy’s palm is covered in black calluses, almost charred straight through to the bone.
It’s the last thing Lance sees — and the only thing he’ll think about, later, tucked away in bed — before his father rounds the corner and carries him out of sight.
