Sterek should have been endgame and Scott needed to be less of a dick.

I wish the writers would stop using Derek as the punching bag. Like I get he was an angry asshole at the start but can you blame him after all that he went through? He should have had a character growth arc and given the chance to be a better alpha instead of making him give it up. I get the symbolism of giving up the power but he should have gotten it back. And we should have seen more of his full shift than what we got. Like the Hales were special because of the full shift and we only see it once? Also he should have gotten his family land back, like it's been in his family for years and he's lost enough he shouldn't have let the county take his land that was fucked up. Even if he never rebuilt, he could have tore the remains down and put up a marker or a tree or something to show they were there and what happened. But to let it become new housing was just fucked up.

I would have like to see Derek and Scott be co-alphas and lead the pack together. They could have had a batman and superman friendship with one of them being broody and the other being hopeful and optimistic.

Stiles should have had magic. I know Dylan O'Brien said he didn't want Stiles to have magic and just be human but come on, he would have been badass at it.

I was never a big fan of Stiles and Lydia because it felt like he was more in love with the image he had of her than of her. Yes he got to know the real Lydia and they fell in love but I still didn't really like it. He was too obsessed with her it felt like he just wore her down or something idk. I know that Dylan said in an interview that Stiles and Lydia would have dated for a while but then realized they were better of as friends, and this was years before the movie came out.

And OMG the movie what the shit was that!?!?!? For all that Scott said he would be the alpha and defend Beacon Hill he left the town for years and still left at the end of the movie. Derek, Peter, Malia, and Jordan are really the only supernaturals left to defend the town. The Hales are the ones protecting their territory. And did they really have to kill Derek in the way they did it. Like fire really? REALLY!?!? And in front of his sixteen year old son. Derek lost his family at sixteen to a fire and now his son Eli loses his dad to a fire at sixteen? Really!?!? Like I hated it, I hated that the whole movie felt like Scott was just reliving his high school glory days. I hate that's Scott got his happy ending at the expense of Derek's life. Derek was good, he was happy with his son, had a home, a good business, was respect in the community, had a good relationship with the remainder of his family and you kill him off? And then hint at the fact that Scott would be the one to 'adopt' Eli, a kid he barely knew, just so that he and Allison could play house and be a happy little family? BULLSHIT!!!!

I read somewhere that Jeff wanted the show to end with Scott and Allison together and Stiles and Lydia together and that their kids would all be best friends. But with Crystal Reed leaving in season 3 that changed things. The movie felt like his way of getting that ending he wanted but Dylan not returning changed things again. But at least Scott got Allison back, so yay? Don't get me wrong I loved Scott and Allison together but Scott was so obsessed with her to the point that he would throw anyone but his mom under the bus for her. And it got annoying very fast even worse was the fact that he didn't really learn anything from it he has just as obsessed with Kira (though maybe not to the same level). The whole bros before hoes thing was non existent for him. I get Scott was supposed to be like a King Arthur kind of figure, you know? Special, good leader, kind, and legendary but Scott was not it. Yea he had his moments where he was really good but he had so many where he wasn't and he never seemed to learn and grow. Like even the BBC Merlin Arthur who started out as a jerk became honorable, just, and a good leader, yea he too had his moments where he regressed but it was still better than Scott.

They should have fixed his relationship with Derek maybe then him taking Eli in would have made more sense. Like Scott hated Derek a lot ,more so than necessary. Yes Derek lied to get Scott to help him take down the alpha (Peter) but Scott acted like Derek was he one who bit him. Scott forgave so many others who had done far worse (deucalion?) But Derek was where he drew the line? Why because he bit three others who chose the bite? I get him being mad about the lies, I get him being mad about Derek's attitude while on the alpha power trip but come on sometimes Scott was just a dick. He was willing to look the other way when Victoria tried to kill him and was ok with keeping quiet about why Derek bit Victoria and let Allison hate derek and attack his pack because he didn't want to cause problems with Allison. No he sucks. We could have had an epic friendship between them but no we got something half-assed and I hate it.

And why the hell did they make Derek basically a True Alpha like two seconds before he died like what the FUCK!?!?!?

I just wished the would have given Scott some character development instead of just making him more powerful.

Some thoughts on the teen wolf movie:

Overall I quite liked the movie, I feel a bit embarrassed saying that after seeing what everyone else thinks about it but I can’t help it lol. I’m not gonna lie I do think there’s both a lot pros and cons to it, so here’s my thoughts on it:

To start off I really loved the time jump it just made sense to me and I love seeing how the character’s ages were now closer to the actors ages instead of them still being in their teen years or early twenties. I didn’t know that was going to happen so I was pleasantly surprised by that. Knowing that Scott still worked with animals and deaton was so sweet to me, Lydia being a fucking was boss was just *chefs kiss* The Hale’s having a family business, awesome. Honestly just having a good portion of the characters back on screen was awesome to me lmao, didn’t realise how much I missed teen wolf til I watched it.

The beginning of the movie was pretty awesome, I never thought that they would open it up to Liam in japan, he’s speaking Japanese and serving customers at a restaurant, this indicates that’s he’s been there a while. Hikari had a cool intro alongside Liam, it’s obvious she’s a badass and you get to see small bits of that throughout the movie. this could’ve been a really good opportunity to create a new strong Asian woman/character that people like me (I’m part Asian) could relate to but instead of making her completely different and new, the writer/s took all of Kira’s traits (Kitsune, sword etc.) and dumped it onto hikari, which to me felt really lazy and probably racist which doesn’t surprise me considering how they treated Arden Cho (go watch partner track on Netflix!!). It’s also obvious that there’s a relationship between hikari and Liam which was also left unexplored because after the intro they were both sidelined throughout the rest of the movie which is really annoying. I’m also a shipper of Liam and Theo as I know others are 👀but honestly for whatever reason, even after only having Liam and hikari for like five minutes I do actually think they’re cute together and if we got to see more of that, I would totally watch it.

I love how malia is still the same when it comes to her thoughts and honesty 😂 glad they didn’t change that too much about her. MALIA AND PARRISH!!!?? I never would’ve guessed they be a thing and I’m not mad about them either, I mean they were pretty hot together but I did find it a bit random and unnecessary.

Derek hale has a son and his name is Eli, I think all The Hale family members seem to have really cool names, don’t ask me why I’m focused on that, I just am lol. Seeing derek have a new family considering he lost all of his other loved ones and his pack got killed made me really happy, I think it’s a logical way to grow his character since we’ve already kind of seen him as a brother and mentor type figure to Scott. genuinely thought we’d only ever see him have kids in fanfics but now it’s canon and I can’t believe it. I am surprised at his death, I was scared earlier on when his neck was bleeding so it was even more devastating when he actually did end up dying later. Tyler did a great job playing Derek and I’m really glad the could get him back for the movie. Derek keeping stiles jeep and fixing it up just gave me all the sterek feels. And the fact that Eli grew up on stories of all the characters 😫

Eli Hale is easily one of the top three best things in this movie for me, he’s a perfect addition and the fact he has so much stiles in him just makes me appreciate his character even more. Maybe they wrote him that way on purpose to fill in for stiles/Dylan but that doesn’t bother me either cos I thought he was introduced really well. I love how they kept stiles part of the movie through Eli with his personality and his obsession with stiles jeep whichleads me to the relationship between Noah and Eli which I freaking adored. I honestly wish after dereks death that Noah would be the one to take in Eli instead of Allison and Scott. I think it would have been better for Scott to just be his mentor and alpha and keep that separate from being a father figure which Noah already kind of is (that’s how I see it anyway). Also Allison tried to kill Eli, so unless Eli’s forgiven her it doesn’t really make sense for them to be a family.

Scott to me felt like the character who changed the least out of all of them which is not a bad thing. I said earlier that I love how he stuck with deaton and dogs, you could see throughout the show his passion for it and I love that that hasn’t changed as he’s gotten older. although after seeing him in the whole firefighting situation at the start, I honestly could see him as a firefighter. He’s got super strength and hearing, like he’d be great at it. I’m glad they wrote it so him and malia were already broken up before Allison came back because I don’t think I could watch malias heart get broken by Scott still being in love with Allison. I thought the reunion between Scott and malia was really funny.

Allison is back!!! The shot where she’s walking and the two cars explode in the background was 🔥🔥 She was a pretty good bad guy, especially going after Eli and Derek because she was ruthless about it which reminded me of how Chris argent was at the start of the series when it came to Scott and Derek since he was pretty ruthless with them too. it was so creepy the way the nogitsune used her especially by pretending to be her mom which made me GASP 😮. And it was super heartbreaking that she didn’t have her memories too. When Scott told her he was still in love with her 😍 the looks they gave each other right after he said that, threw me back to the earlier seasons, it was really cute.

JR bourne did such a good job with chris’ reaction regarding Allison being back. He’s had such great character growth throughout the series and he’s just even more badass in the movie. Also when he was swearing 😏🔥 wish we got to see more of him and Melissa, I’m assuming they’re still together since there was a small hug between them after everything was over but it’s not enough for me lol I need more, I loved them in the show. Another person on tumblr (can’t remember their username sorry!!) said they finally got Melissa a weapon!! and I had the exact same thought, she’s awesome.

Peter had the most Peter hale entrance to the movie and I loved it, I still think he’s an asshole tho lol. Also that scene when they were at the cliff and he’s on his hands and knees sniffing at the ground was really funny to me.

They could not have had mason and Liam further away from eachother throughout the entire movie like wtf, not even a little acknowledgement like a hug between them or anything. With mason being a deputy, I thought made sense because he had the brains and the whole problem solving thing similar to stiles so him being a cop and using his researching abilities etc to solve crimes and seeing him work with Parrish and the sheriff was cool to me since they weren’t really characters that interacted in the show… but if we’re being political I’m not sure if it makes sense since he’s young and black and I’m not sure if he’d buy into the whole “if you want to change the system, you have to be part of it” kind of thing, I don’t know if I’m reaching or reading too much into that but let me know what you guys think about it cos I’m not sure 😅

Lydia, oh Lydia. I love you. She’s a powerful woman, she’s got her own office, she’s all fancy, I love it I love it. Having to imagine her having nightmares of stiles being dead is horrible!! Like why couldn’t he just be on a special assignment some where as an fbi agent so he couldn’t be back to help them. Them not being together after everything is really sad and I’m just grateful they didn’t kill him offscreen. Anyway back to Lydia, when she screamed Allison it gave me chills and took me back to the earlier seasons too, glad to see they got a reunion hug between them. I love how she towed Jackson around with her and he still kept his attitude 😂 I laughed when he was talking about Ethan

Adrian harris, when he revealed himself I was genuinely shocked because I totally thought he died in the show so that was a pretty good plot twist to me, and the fact that he got dragged to eichen house!!! Lol you deserve it asshole.

I think the nogitsune was a good choice of villain to bring back, he’s creepy and manipulative and the fact that Scott’s bite managed to give him werewolf powers!!?? I didn’t see that coming at all!! I thought it was really cool like him turning into a werewolf was like the next level of him being a villian. Everytime the oni we’re on screen, the synchronicity between them had me on edge, watching the gang take them down was really cool, when Derek, Scott and Eli lined up to go after the nogitsune I cheered 😁 just seeing them together with all there different eye colours, I just thought it was really freaking cool.

Throughout the movie I was thinking that if they wanted to kill the nogitsune they’d have to kill Allison too since they’re like connected or Allison would sacrifice herself and die again and I’m glad that wasn’t the case. When Allison had to shoot Scott with the arrows I really thought they’d kill him off and Eli would end up being the next generation kind of thing which is sort of what happened only Derek ended up sacrificing himself instead of Scott dying 😫 if I am being honest with you I think I could make peace with Scott dying if it meant Derek being able to raise his son. The shot with Eli at the end really gives me hope for spin-offs in the future which I would definitely watch but I’m not sure others would be inclined to agree with me. I think the movie was kind of choppy and think that if it was made into limited/mini series like somewhere between 4-8 episodes then it would flow a lot better and would be a lot more appealing to most folks, characters would get better screen time between them, we could get flashbacks (I mean there’s a 15year time jump, stuff has happened!), proper funeral for Derek, I don’t know…I think they could’ve made it work for a tv show. Let me know what you guys think about it in the comments 😊

Loved when Jackson took over and put together Lydia’s drawing, it makes sense to me that he’s the one to figure it out since they’re still close friends, I bet stiles would be the one to put it together if he’d been there

Feel like it’s inappropriate to think about this since it was a eulogy/funeral scene, but omg everyone looked super hot in their outfits - Chris in a turtleneck, Allison in a suit and skirt, Noah in the black suit, Melissa and Lydia’s dresses, Peters suit was next level of course… just they looked really good ok 😫😍

Eli is a lacrosse player and it reminded me of Scott and stiles when they were first on the team 😊 it was hilarious when coach made Scott get back into the game even tho he’s and adult

Hello Mini Bang Artists! I am excited to bring you the summaries for the seven fics being created for this event! Please fill out the Google form here: Claim Form with your first and second choice (use fic one, fic two, etc). There is also an opportunity to state fics you would prefer not to create for and fics that you cannot create for.

After all of the fics are claimed, or by Jun 5th, I will connect each author and artist so you can communicate and work together. (I will be working off a first come, first serve model with respect to people's triggers/squicks.) If you have any questions feel free to message me here, on Discord, or send me an email! Story One: Claimed Rated: E Ship: Scott/Stiles

Summary: The story revolves around a dark AU where the tragic murder of Sheriff Stilinski sends Stiles into a dark spiral. With the awful deaths of both of his parents, he starts to idolize death instead of fearing it as a way to cope with the suffering they went through. He starts to kill people, bringing them peace through violent means. Scott finds Stiles in the act, after years of witnessing horrible people doing horrible things, he just wants to stop killers from harming innocent people. So he proposes an alternative to Stiles, instead of killing people who are innocent, go after other killers. From there it’s a stream of murders on a road trip, California, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado find serial killers ending their reins with a final kill. Unbeknown to the news, those final kills are the serial killers themselves being murdered in a way that mirrors what they’ve done to their victims. Scott finds it to be a job, but Stiles, he’s becoming more unstable, killing far more frequently than he had before and finding himself craving the release more frequently. Scott finds himself losing control of his weapon, and starts to panic about what their future really holds.

Story Two:Claimed

Rated: Teen Ship: Most Gen, Scott and Rafael, Kira/Malia/Scott

Summary: Scott goes to visit his dad during Christmas break in an effort to rekindle their relationship. Scott doesn't know that Rafael has discovered that he's a werewolf- and seeks to use that to his advantage. The focus is on Scott and Rafael and their relationship with a side of Malia/Scott/Kira and Noshiko and Melissa working together and being badass about it.

Story Three:Claimed Rated: E Ship: Scott/Theo

Summary: Two years after the finale, Scott and Theo must pose as boyfriends in order to catch a mysterious killer targeting couples. Their mission takes them to a mysterious hotel on the beach, where they must confront the past and their feelings for each other, before the killer catches up to them. She hopes that maybe it will give her two boyfriends the opportunity to actually bond. Melissa has always been the one to balance them out, and keep them from getting at each other's throat, and without her ever calming presence as a buffer, who knows what could happen? Drunk confessions and cuddling happens. Chris gets stuck in a life or death situation that leaves Peter with the hard choice of giving him the bite to save him, despite worrying Chris might hate him after. When Chris finally wakes up, alive and well, Peter lets slip exactly what he really means to him. Melissa is relieved they’ve finally stopped dancing around each other. In the end, they all fuck about it.

Story Five:Claimed Ship: Coach/Sheriff

Summary: “So,” Stiles greets from the couch where he’s been sitting in almost total darkness. There’s a light on in the kitchen but it only just reaches the living room. The sheriff startles, and while he doesn’t automatically reach for his gun, Stiles knows he maybe wasn’t that far off. “How was the conference?” - - - - - Sheriff Stilinski has been acting awfully suspiciously lately. Stiles takes it upon himself to snoop around and try to figure out why. A 5+1 style fic where Stiles sleuths out the truth of his father’s budding relationship with his Coach.

Story Six: Pairing: Scott/Theo: Claimed

Summary: Scott and Theo are brought together by a disaster that upends the separate peace they have formed for themselves. The decisions they made at the end of the canon series seemed like good ones back, then but all it takes is a shift in perspective to overthrow everything they thought they knew. All it takes is an Act of God.

Story Seven:Claimed Paring: Scott/Isaac

Summary: Scott wakes up after the fight at the abandoned mall, and he can't get Derek's off his head. Isaac, who has temporarily moved in to the guest room, is dealing with the alpha's death in a very different way. They both get ready for the cross-country meet, but they're both silent during breakfast. Before they leave, Melissa kisses them both and wishes them good luck.

That day ends up being a very long one.

Perhaps that was why neither of the two werewolves had expected to live through it again.

Basically, this is a time-loop scisaac fic focused on Motel California and the previous episode. The boys have to find out a way to break the loop. It may involve getting their heads out of their arses and admit what they feel, so Scott can get on the right track to be a true alpha later on. People may die in the loops that go Wrong (TM).

How 47 Ronin (2013) was almost good

It's no secret that this movie was a flop and not without good reason. Still, I think it could have been a very good film if it were not for one thing:

Keanu Reeves.

Not the person, but his character, his casting and everything to do with that. Keanu is a great person and good at what he does, but him playing the protagonist lead to everything that is wrong with 47 Ronin.

1. There is literally no reason for Kai to not be played by a Japanese actor.

He was raised by the tengu and later Lord Asano, so for all intents and purposes, he is Japanese.

If the writers wanted him to be discriminated against, it would have been enough for him to be a "demon child". Him being a demon-raised, supernaturally gifted, lonely brooding half-english badass that the princess is in love with in a movie full of regular Japanese men with no special powers feels like the writers tried so hard to make him special that they overdid it.

2. Actually, there is no reason for Kai to exist in this story.

Think about it. What does he do to move the plot along? Well, he fights in the tournament in Yasuno's stead, which leads to Lord Asano being shamed because his champion was not a samurai. This conflict however has no bearing on the overall plot. It is a completely unrelated incident that leads to Asano's seppuku and jumpstarts the plot. Still, if the writers wanted to keep the champion switcharoo in for some reason, they could have had Yoshio Oishi's son, Chikara, take Yasuno's place instead. Then the couldn't have been about the champion not being a samurai (since Chikara is one), but it could still work. Imagine:

Chikara finds the bewitched Yasuno in his tent, as it happens in the movie. He considers telling his father, but realises it is too late. Panicking, but also sensing the chance he's been waiting for to prove himself to his father, he puts on Yasuno's armor and fights in his stead. Only, he is still a boy and not nearly experienced enough. He gets his ass handed to him, and then one backhand strike from Kira's champion sends his helmet flying off. Oishi tenses by Lord Asano's side as he resognizes his son. For just a moment, he is torn between keeping decorum and intervening, but as Kira's champion lands another blow, he disregards everything and rushes to save his child. He manages to parry the enemy's sword just as he's about to behead Chikara. The Shogun decrees that since Lord Kira is the damaged party, he should decide Oishi's punishment for intervening. Kira decides that Oishi's punishment should be being the one to deliver Chikara's. He is handed a wooden sword, and forced to beat his son with it.

This gives Chikara some much needed characterization and gives more depth to the protectiveness but also coldness that Oishi displays around him.

Even the tengu sword subplot could have been easily done without Kai, simply by having any of the 47 know their own country's folklore. Even in the movie, Oishi is the one who has to pass a test to earn the swords and Kai is just... there.

3. Kai is not important enough to the story to be a deuteragonist, but he still takes half the screentime that should have belonged to Oishi.

Kai's whole motivation is to prevent the girl he likes from marrying Kira. That's it. There is no indication that he feels any sort of loyalty to Asano and wants to avenge him like the rest of the ronin do. He's just along for the ride, and his whole story is the movie's Romantic Plot Tumor. The whole time, Oishi is the one who matters. He moves the plot along, he has the strongest motivation and he's the one who ultimately defeats Kira.

If the writers felt the movie needed a romance subplot, Oishi and his wife Riku were right there. Him asking her to divorce him to spare her the punishment for his crimes is already a beautifully romantic scene. Give them a few more scenes together and you can have a great tragic romantic subplot that doesn't feel like it's removed from the rest of the story. Also, Hiroyuki Sanada and Nasuki Kunimoto had great chemistry together, something that the actual romantic leads sorely lacked.

Overall, Keanu Reeves' character sadly feels like a bad self insert, and every time he was on screen, most of the audiences were probably just waiting for the focus to shift back to Hiroyuki Sanada's Oishi.

Ok buckle up full disclosure despite it having been at least around a 6 year mission so far I still have not seen all of Trek. My status in summary:

TOS: about mid season 1 I think

TNG: mid season 4

VOY: mid season 5

DS9: end of season 3

ENT: completed

Disco: up until season 4

PIC: completed

SNW: completed

Prodigy: completed

Lower Decks: I watched 1 episode

TV movies: completed

Kelvin movies: completed

I give this summary because inevitably I will forget something cool that I have seen and then kick myself when I remember, but I definitely won’t list what I haven’t seen. So hopefully that explains any anomalies. So without further ado!

5. Episode plot you wish they had handled differently?

I am going to go with what first popped into my head which is the Voyager episode 4.17 Retrospect. Frothing rage is the best description of how I felt. I was appalled and I get that it can be brushed off as the show being “of it’s time” but I hate that excuse, and the whole “we don’t trust your word we need physical proof, oh we don’t have it so you are wrong and let’s feel sorry for the maybe bad guy” just made me want to hurl. I can’t believe that wasn’t a terrible message back then. I mean tell me the writers room was a boys club without telling me. The whole feeling was just so so gross and I was going to fix it in my “Raffi on Voyager” fic but then I never wrote it.

Presuming we have to keep the ambiguity of “did this actually happen” and Trek is supposed to ask the hard questions, so ok, then bare minimum Seven should have had someone validate her. I don’t mean the Doctor who was creepy, and then made the mess about how bad he felt/his pain. I mean someone that was like “you believe it happened, then I believe it happened, as whether it did or not you feel like it did” because that feeling of violation stayed. Seven should have had support and care for her trauma not told “oh it never happened so feel sorry for this guy as you are the reason he’s dead, we should never have believed you” - I am getting so mad thinking about it.

It can remain a complex situation but the lack of physical proof doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, and making it all about everyone else’s ‘guilt’ just no. I get there has to be a burden of proof because accusations without evidence can be untrue and ruin lives, but ugh it just felt bad. I am sure there is a way to have the complex plot and not feel so icky. I just was so angry and upset for Seven.

29. Favorite and least favorite episodes?

Well I could name a good chunk of SNW as favourites haha. Special shout out to The Elysian Kingdom 😁 but even SNW has its duds. I found 2.05 Charades a chore to get through.

2.01 The 37’s from Voyager is one my mind often returns to as a favourite because dammit Amelia Earhart should have gone on Voyager and become a pilot. Which raises a good point in that unfortunately for a large part of Trek the version in my head is often better than the show… I wanted to watch something of Trek for Star Trek Day and I vacillated between the shows. I was like hmm “Kira and Dax” or “B’elanna and Seven” and then the crushing ugh that unless I rewatched I couldn’t guarantee they would even have good screentime, probably wouldn’t interact at all, and would never get to act as badass as I believe they are.

There’s the usual suspects on the fave list from Voyager like Year of Hell, Killing Game etc. I already covered one episode of Voyager which makes me rage. There are moments in others. I can’t recall a favourite DS9 episode. With that it’s like most Trek in that my faves don’t get much chance to shine so I have favourite scenes more than episodes.

I am currently trying to push through and watch all of TNG as I know Worf joins DS9 in season 4 and I thought I should at least pretend to watch some things in order. But ugh. TNG is like the characters are familiar and I don’t dislike them, but I am often not compelled. TOS is worse and I think it’s probably maybe a stylistic thing. Part of me wants to watch as I am interested in Trek lore, and there are good moments here and there that I like, but there’s also a big dose of obligation.

I try not to dwell on the negative which I think is why I am not listing a bunch for “least favourite” as I would rather think about what I love. But as I said for Trek (and a lot of other shows to be honest) there is a sense of general disappointment as the version in my head - the potential the amazing characters have - is better than what is on screen. So there’s that.

40. If you got a trek inspired tattoo what would it be?

Hmm. I don’t have tattoos. I am a huge wimp and far too scared. Also they are permanent and I am not sure that I am that passionate about anything, that I will still feel that strong about it in twenty years.

I am trying to give this serious thought. I am tossing quotes round in my head but there’s nothing that comes to mind, nothing that resonates so hard it’s written on my heart (and therefore could be written on my skin).

Maybe just the StarFleet badge. It’s interesting that it’s a shaped triangle (kinda) as on Stargate the home symbol is a triangle with a circle on top. Haha maybe a joint tattoo merging the two. Well no but cool concept.

Ahem okay so I finished it and I'm gonna do a little messy overview of my thoughts so just WARNING FOR TEEN WOLF THE MOVIE SPOILERS

Okay but like WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT MASTERPIECE????? It was SO GOOD???? I loved seeing all of the original actors again because they wrjahsnahahehwh ugh they were what made the show so special in the first place so to see them all back and together again was so special. Obviously I wish Stiles was there. I already made a post about why it would have been so good for him to have been there because of his background with the nogitsune and the nogitsune playing such a big role in the movie and I still 100% believe it but I'm glad they didn't cast another person to play Stiles just so he could be there.

And like, I know the woman with Liam played a really important role and was ultimately the reason Scott lived but she just felt so out of place there? Like logically I know her main purpose was just to replace Kira because the show needed a kitsune to fight the nogitsune, and that's fine or whatever and tbh I never liked Kira so I'm not mad about her absence. But at the same time like... I don't even remember this new girl's name? And why was Liam in Japan anyway? That whole thing was confusing to me so if you understand just like comment or something.

Eli was fine... Very young, maturity wise, but that's sorta to be expected? Although I think the whole thing would have gone the exact same way without him, I did like seeing dad!Derek, so that's something I suppose.

As far as the other characters (besides Derek and Allison because lordie do I have things to say) I feel like Scott slipped back into his role really well. Tyler Posey does a wonderful job with that character and he really shined throughout the movie which I really loved. Lydia was quite a let down to me at first because she was my favorite character in the show so I had really high Expectations but I mean by the end she was back to her badass self and I really adored her. The reason why she broke things off with Stiles took a piece of my heart and crumpled it to the ground shshahwhsdhdt I loved those two together. I never really had opinions about Parrish, Malia, and Liam so I don't really have anything to say about them.

I feel like Jackson was only really there for comic relief? Like he had that moment with Lydia encouraging her to wail but that was his only moment lmao. I keep bringing things back to Stiles but Jackson totally slipped into Stiles' comedic relief role and I can't decide if I like it yet or not.

As far as Allison goes, I loved seeing our badass back! She's such a fighter and she's so wonderful and even though she was playing the "villain" for half the time I still really felt bad for her because I mean... She didn't ask to be brought back to life? She was trying to pass on, not come back, and yet here she was, painfully confused and trying not to lose her shit on everyone. I really felt bad for her.

And okay, Derek. I never LOVED Derek but like WHY DID THEY DO THAT TO HIM?????? don't get me wrong it was poetic or whatever but like WAS THERE NOT A BETTER WAY? and like did it occur to him that his SON WAS RIGHT THERE LIKE HE DIDN'T EVEN ADDRESS HIM??? he told Scott he was part of his pack and then he didn't even say goodbye 😭 idk maybe it was too painful for him or something? Either way it hurt so bad 😭

The last thing I wanna say is about the music score of the movie because tbh that shit makes or breaks a movie and this score was SO GOOD. it made me cry at the end (genuinely don't think I would have cried if the music wasn't so on point) and dhshshhe whoever scored the movie did a really great job.

Anyway, my heart is successfully in pieces on the floor. I really enjoyed that and now I'll probably rewatch the series because I really miss Stiles and like... Season 3 Lydia.

(Side tangent: does anyone else skip the first season on the rewatch? I love the character plots in the first season but idk I just like season two better because everything is established and Lydia is less awful? Idk lemme know)

If you’re for feeling tempted to watch the Supernatural prequel because of the new diverse character announcements, I’m here to remind you that there are other fantasy/sci-fi/horror TV shows that not only have diversity (but are even led with it!)

“I want to watch a monster-hunting show led by a powerful woman!”

Wynonna Earp (SyFy): two sisters, one a wise-cracking but badass hunter of the undead and the other a more serious but sweeter girl with mysterious monster origins, are reunited after years apart. Basically, it’s Supernatural but funnier (and gayer!)

Van Helsing (SyFy): a re-imagining of the vampire hunting icon that follows his descendant Vanessa Helsing,

Warrior Nun (Netflix): A girl comes back from the dead and learns she’s part of a secret order of demon-hunting nuns.

Lost Girl (SyFy): Bisexual succubus Bo and her human best friend Kenzi become private investigators of the world of the “fae”, supernatural beings that range from fairies to wolves to sirens and succubi like Bo.

“I want to watch a show about Asian characters in the world of fantasy and monsters!”

Okay well, first off, I also cannot begin to tell you about how many amazing non-American supernatural shows are out there if you’re willing to read subtitles. A couple of my personal favorites are Black (a Korean horror/fantasy/mystery show about reapers and a woman who can see when people will die, Netflix) and All of Us Are Dead (a new action-fantasy drama about high schoolers battling a zombie invasion, Netflix) and I would love to hear people rec their faves, too! A few that don’t need subtitles though…

Shadow & Bone (Netflix): A well-received adaptation of the high fantasy book series, with a diverse writing staff and cast including half-Chinese Jessie Mei Lei as the lead. Fan-favorite characters from the sequels such as Inej and Jesper (a South Asian woman and a mixed-race bisexual man respectively) also got integrated into the series early and become prevalent characters in the books’ spinoffs.

Marvel’s Runaways (Hulu): a darker, teen superhero show with the found family themes you always wanted from their movies. Its highlight is easily Nico Minoru, a Japanese-American and queer sorceress who learns her and her friends' parents are part of a super-villain organization

Wu Assassins (Netflix): a Chinese-Indonesian man in San Francisco discovers he has magical origins and has to fight to keep his family’s power out of the wrong hands

Teen Wolf (MTV/Amazon Prime): While only part of the cast for Season 3-5, the show’s introduction of Japanese-Korean Kitsune Kira Yukimara and her mysterious family led to the shows’ most well-received storyline and arc. She teams up with troubled teen werewolf Scott McCall and his pack to fight an evil creature tormenting the town.

And of course Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel Legend of Korra (Nickelodeon/Amazin Prime): AMAZING animated shows with all-Asian characters and original fantasy world inspired by multiple East Asian and South Asian countries. They may be kids’ shows but they deal with a lot of heavy and mature themes that make it enjoyable for any age.

“I want to watch a genre show with a Latino lead (bonus points if queer!)”

What We Do in the Shadows (FX/Hulu): a horror-comedy TV spinoff of Taika Waiti’s iconic and hilarious vampire mockumentary film, with racially diverse writers and cast and basically all LGBT lead characters. The true heart of the show is the queer, Mesztizo and Mexican human character Guillermo (whose identity isn’t hypersexualized like some of the vampires characters’ more fluid bisexuality/pansexuality are)

The Owl House (Disney): yes, another animated kids’ show, but I cannot recommend this fantasy series enough especially to any former "Harry Potter" fans. It’s led by a teenage, Latina human who discovers witches and a secret world of magic and is eager to learn so she can be a part of it. Luz is also bisexual, and her relationship with another young witch has been one of the most talked about storylines of the show.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (Showtime): a horror-drama spinoff of Penny Dreadful set in Los Angeles in the 1930s that tackles both Mexican-American tensions and folklore with characters connected in a conflict between the angel Santa Muerte and demoness Magda.

Roswell, New Mexico (The CW/Netflix): While I’m hesitant to recommend any CW show, this remake of the 90’s sci-fi drama/romance (which infamously whitewashed characters from the books) ingrains diversity into the cast and plot, with the Mexican-American lead’s immigrant family dealing with real-life racial tension in New Mexico in addition to the show’s original storyline of immigrant aliens adjusting from life on a whole other planet.

Not sure I'm happy with this, but I hope it was kinda what you were looking for. :) Just wanna make you guys happy with my stories. <3

Five months, five months I had been in Beacon Hills. Five months where I was meeting new friends, acing my classes, and genuinely just enjoying high school. Five whole months had passed and I had just learned tonight that apparently werewolves were real...and banshees...and a bunch of other things that I did not have time to get into. Something told me that hanging out with Stiles and his friends would get me into trouble. My dumb ass couldn’t resist those honey-colored eyes, though.

So as of 9 pm on this wonderful Friday night, I was in Scott’s house apparently at a pack meeting. A pack meeting that had to include me because somehow my life was on the line. Somehow even though I had only just found out about this stuff two hours ago.

“y/n, are you okay?” Stiles asked me cautiously.

“Oh yeah, I’m totally fine. Totally not freaking out that Scott, Isaac, and Derek are werewolves, Lydia is a banshee, Malia is a werecoyote, Kira is a Kitsune, and that you were possessed by a demon like a year ago. That’s all not mind-blowing at all….”

“You’ve definitely been hanging out with Stiles too much,” Lydia laughed. “We only have room for one sarcastic human in this pack.”

I couldn’t believe how normal everyone was acting. Like, calling yourselves a pack? How is this not a scene from a cheesy teen movie? Even though this kind of thing was something they had been dealing with for a while, they weren’t even freaking out at all. They all just seemed so casual that I could die at any second. Well, except maybe Stiles, he did seem to be very nervous.

“I think I need to go lie down.” I mumbled before leaving the kitchen and plopping myself on the living room couch. My mind was reeling. How was a person supposed to cope with learning that things that were supposed to be mythical and fake were actually real...way too real.

“y/n, is..is there anything I can do for you? I just, well I really feel so bad for getting you into this mess. I knew what you hanging out with us could mean, I was just being so selfish because I really liked you and I wanted to get to know you better. But I should have known it wasn’t a good idea, I never wanted you to be involved in this mess. I’m so sorry. Really I am, you don’t know-”

“So like was past tense? As in, you don’t anymore?” I asked, distracted from what I had just learned.

“What? I-I mean. Wait-all of that and what you picked up on was that I used the word liked?” Stiles eyebrows pinched up and he let out a confused breath.

“I mean, it’s pretty important information. I NEED to know the answer.”

“Well yes-I mean no….fuck. What I mean is of course I still like you. That’s why I’m freaking out now. I was hoping to at least get you to like me back before I dumped all of this on you. And now you’re freaking life is in danger and it’s all my fault.”

“You really are as oblivious as they all say.” I said, laughing at the boy standing in front of me in total shock. When he didn’t say anything after I continued. “Dude, I’ve literally liked you from the moment you ran into me and knocked down everything in my hands on my second day at school. Like how do you not know that?”

Before Stiles and I could continue our conversation, the others came out to tell us their plan. It involved using me as bait, and though Stiles was vehemently against the plan, it did make the most sense. And for some odd reason, I trusted this rag-tag group of friends. I knew that they would do anything to keep me from getting hurt. Most people you’ve known for five months could barely be considered your friends. Yet these people were willing to risk their own lives to save yours.

The plan worked out. I was mainly just hiding behind a wall as all of the pack fought tooth and nail. There was a lot of blood and a lot of wounds. I heard Lydia’s yell for the first time and boy was it absolutely ear-shattering. I watched Kira be a badass and handle two monsters completely by herself. I saw Scott use his alpha powers to keep his whole pack in sync. I even saw Stiles nail one or two with his bat, however most of the time he stood in front of where I was, ‘keeping the bad guys away’. Constantly asking if I was okay, even though he knew it was a stupid question.

After the fight finished, they were all giving each other compliments and talking about who did what. The energy radiating off of them was contagious. This group of highschool teenagers, really just fought off a pack of...I don’t even know what. They were really something.

“Hey guys, I knowwww you all kicked ass out there, but honestly I feel like I’m not getting enough credit for dealing with all this unmedicated.” I said, completely freezing the conversations between the friends.

When they all burst out laughing, I knew these were friends I would like to keep, even if it meant dealing with the supernatural.

Lydia interrupted the outburst of laughs, “I don’t know if that’s true. I think Stiles is like a drug to you...why else would you have listened to us when we told you all of these things. ANYONE else would have written us off as delusional and ran away.”

This resulted in another mynical laughing session from the group and a blush to creep up Stiles and my cheeks. I was definitely in for it with these people I called my friends. And I was even more in for it with falling for Stiles. Boy, was this going to be one interesting life from now on.

I want your opinion on some reasons I hate (strong word and I don’t really hate it but…) canon (sorry writing is kinda a mess):

1) Stydia - i hated how stiles would stalk Lydia in the first couple of seasons (let’s not mention his speech about death not happening to you but to people around you bc that makes me want to scream, it’s like when someone’s suicidal and ppl say don’t kill yourselves because of the effect it will have on others) and I was really excited about their friendship but I really don’t they got together and all the moments before that that were framed as romantic (ex. the kiss when stiles was having an anxiety attack). 2) The rep - yes I’m happy that we got Tyler Posey as a lead but the other poc didn’t get much screen time, like I get that Deaton couldn’t intervene much bc he’s an emissary but still I’d love to see him as a main character and Braedon was so badass she deserves more (I personally love kira and malia together but I have this little head canon of malia and Braedon bonding over the whole desert wolf fiasco) or were “killed” off relatively quickly. Danny was basically the token gay (how many times do you think Danny being gay was mentioned or used as a joke in the first 2 seasons?) and just when he was finally getting to be an actual character he just disappeared. There was basically no LGBTQA+ rep that wasn’t gay. Mason and Corey were great and I loved them but Corey didn’t even get a last name and it would’ve been nice for it to happen sooner and for them to get more screen time. Kira leaving made me so angry. Someone from the LGBTQA+ community as a main character. 3) What they did with the skin walkers. 4) How the females only existed for the guys - I could go really into this but you know what I mean,right? 5) What was portrayed as romantic - anxiety attack kiss, Derek and Jennifer having sex right after Derek went to Jennifer for help because he was injured/dying, Stiles and Malia having sex for the first time. 6) Peter - I get keeping him as a character and I like how he’s written in lots of fanfic but canon not acknowledging what he did to Lydia (and Scott but you gotta admit he fucked with Lydia’s head more) and then what happened in season 4 (like it makes zero sense for him to team up with Kate). 5) The timeline, plot holes. 8) What happened to Sterek outside of the show - ik ik sterek but like what happened was pretty annoying. The money sterek fans raised for the wolf shelter than the award being given away to some random guy without acknowledging sterek, the constant teasing that was done to sterek (there’s a shit ton of annoying things that were done that I’m sure you know of but having the cast read sterek fanfics enraged me like I don’t care what pairing or show/movie it is having the cast read fanfic doesn’t seem ok to me and also the cast suddenly not being able to sign sterek merch but being able to sign Lydia/Peter merch) and how after season 2 they did their best to erase sterek completely. I don’t even really ship sterek but it still bugs me especially imagining something like that happening to one of my ships.

I didn’t add everything I wanted to say because I could go on and on about so much but I didn’t want to annoy you and I was getting kinda tired. I’m really sorry for how long this is and if it seems like a hate post, I really don’t want to be a asshole anon and if I am don’t be afraid to call me out I’d actually appreciate it, I just want your opinions on my opinions.

LwD 1.10, “No Small Parts”

Well, that was the most fun I've had watching Star Trek in literally a quarter of a century.

I had high hopes for this series. I love TAS, largely because of its wacky outsized concepts that could only have worked in animation—not that they all did work, but the potential was so apparent to me, even as a kid reading the Alan Dean Foster novelizations—and as an adult, there's something about the imagination of Lower Decks's FX setpieces that transcends even the glorious CGI bonanzas of Discovery.

Pause for a confession. I've long pushed back against criticism of serialization in new Trek. That's just how TV is now, okay? Might as well complain about it being in widescreen. But I'm backing down a little, because I've realized there is something about Star Trek that's inextricable from at least a partially-episodic format. And while Picard was telling a different kind of story, I can't deny that my favourite episodes of Disco have been the ones with a mostly self-contained A-plot. After 10 delightfully episodic instalments of LwD, its focus on long-term development of characters instead of a season-spanning puzzle-plot (okay, mostly just Mariner, but we only have 10 × 22 minutes and she is the star) has been downright refreshing.

So here we are, at the end of the most consistent and well-executed Season 1 of a Star Trek series since, arguably, Those Old Scientists. And sure, if they'd had to produce another... yikes, 42 episodes? Then sure, they probably would have dropped a clunker or two—but they didn't, and winning on a technicality is still winning. I'm practically vibrating with excitement for Disco to come back next week, but damn, I'm going to miss this little show while it's on hiatus.

Spoilers below:

Something I've been keeping track of finally paid off this week! (Which never happens to me, lol.) The destruction of the USS Solvang marked the first present-day death(s) of any Starfleet officer on Lower Decks, the only other on-screen killing at all being a flashback in "Cupid's Errant Arrow". Which makes sense, being (a) a comedy, and (b) about typically "expendable" characters: it hasn't been afraid to flirt with a little darkness here and there, but killing people off at Star Trek's usual pace wouldn't just be wrong for the tone, it would be downright bizarre.

But... people die on Star Trek. That's one of the core themes of the show, really: space is full of knowledge and beauty, but also danger and terror, and believing that the former is worth the risk of the latter is (according to Trek) one of humanity's most noble traits. I'm the least bloodthirsty TV watcher I know, but the longer we went with a body count of nil—ships completely evacuated before they were destroyed, main characters hilariously maimed without permanent consequences, etc.—well, I didn't mind per se, but the absence of truly deadly stakes was definitely getting conspicuous.

Turns out they were saving it up for maximum impact. And holy fuck, I've never felt such a pit in my stomach watching a ship get destroyed that wasn't named Enterprise. It felt grim and brutal and somehow both much too quick and dreadfully inevitable—and yeah, it looked extremely fucking cool—and I'd like every other Star Trek property for the rest of time to take notes under a large bold heading labeled RESTRAINT.

Comedy doesn't need to do this, but my favourite comedy does, and in a way that few other art forms can even approach: lower my emotional defences by making me laugh, endear character(s) to me with goofy-but-relatable antics—then BAM, sucker-punch me in the motherfucking feels. M*A*S*H is probably the classic example on TV, Futurama was notorious for it, and even Archer has pulled it off a few times; it's also a staple of some of my favourite standup. I wasn't sure if Lower Decks was going to go there in Season 1—and wasn't sure if they'd earn it—but I knew if they did, that they'd nail it, and damn. Feels good to be right.

Last batch of notes for the season!!! I rambled enough already, so let's do it liveblog-style:

Okay, yes, the bit with Rutherford cycling through all the different attitudes in his implant was transparently an excuse for Eugene Cardero to vamp while waiting for something to do in the story, but as far as I'm concerned they can contrive a reason for him to do a bunch of different silly Rutherfords in a row any time they damn well want, because that was classic!!!

The slow burn and now the payoff of the Mariner-is-Freeman's-secret-daughter plot has been executed so well. I'm beyond impressed with this writer's room, y'all—they are threading a hell of a needle here

What a brilliant way to resolve and renew the various character arcs and relationships moving into Season 2! The writers could easily have brought everything back to status quo—chaotic Mariner fighting with her mom and being a bad influence on Boimler, etc.—and done another 10 just like these, but I suspect that wouldn't have been ambitious enough for these writers. What a blast. I cannot wait for more.

Renji folded his hands on his knees and leaned forward, regarding Izuru very, very seriously. “Look, as you know, I don’t have any money, or... connections, or… well, anything, really, but you know that if you got cancer or were in a car wreck or something, any organs that I have two of, like kidneys or lungs? One of them would be yours, man. Bone marrow? I have so much bone marrow, and you can have as much of it as you want.”

“You know,” Momo pointed out, setting two paper cups down on the table, “if you marry Rukia someday, you will be absolutely rolling in it. I brought you coffee.”

“I assume she would want a pre-nup,” Renji replied very philosophically. “Which I respect.”

Izuru rolled his eyes and picked up his coffee. Just before taking a sip, he remembered. “Is this just the sludge that collects at the bottom of the airpot again?”

“Could be,” Momo tried to sound innocent.

“Oh, boy, my favorite!” Renji announced. “It’s so good, you just have to put, like, six creamers in. You want some creamers, Izuru?”

“I’ll pass,” Izuru said, pushing the coffee away. “Why can’t we do this in the game store, again?”

“Because Rukia hangs out at the game store!”

Instead, they were in the Barnes and Noble, where Momo worked in the cafe. Nothing personal to Momo, but Izuru hated the Barnes and Noble. It felt so bland and corporate, and smelled like new carpet, and he always felt like he should buy something if he was going to hang out there (not that he ever did). Besides, the couch was comfier at the game store.

“Just do this for him,” Momo implored, while Renji dug through the creamers, trying to find six that matched.

“It’s not that I don’t want to do it,” Izuru explained. “It’s that I think it’s a bad idea. You have been friends with Rukia since, what, fifth grade?”

“Third grade.”

“Third grade. Right. You sit next to her in class. You eat lunch with her. You talk to her all the time. Just say, ‘hey, Rukia, I really like you, will you go to prom with me?’ There’s no way she can look into your dumb puppy eyes and say no. Tell him, Momo.”

“Izuru’s certainly right about the puppy eyes.”

Renji sighed. “You don’t know Rukia like I do. Her family doesn’t do affection at all, and talking about feelings really scares her. If I ask her point blank like that, she’ll get defensive, and she won’t speak to me for a month, and she won’t go to prom at all, and then I’ll have to third-wheel Ikkaku and Yumichika.”

“You don’t have to do that,” Izuru pointed out. “You could…” he waved a hand vaguely. “You could take Momo.”

Momo shook her head. “Nanao and the Kotetsu sisters and I agreed to go together as gal pals,” she explained. “You could be a gal pal with us, I suppose, but only if you’re willing to coordinate outfits. You do look good in aqua.”

“Thanks,” Renji replied glumly. “Hey, I thought Rangiku was in your group, too?”

“Oh, she got a date.”

Izuru sniffed, pretending to be disinterested. If Shuuhei had finally gotten up the courage to ask Rangiku, then good for him.

“That upperclassman with the silver hair, Gin, asked her. He seems a little creepy to me, but she really likes him, and he’s friends with Aizen-sempai, so he must be a decent guy.”

Kira’s hands tightened on his knees. “She’s not going with Shuuhei?”

Renji gave him a look.

“Shuuhei says prom is lame and he’s not going,” Momo shrugged.

“I see,” Izuru frowned. “I mean, he’s not wrong.”

“He is wrong!” Renji protested. “Prom rocks. You wear fancy outfits and buy flowers for the person you like and there’s some insane theme, like Arabian Nights or Haunted Halloween Castle. You slow dance to ‘Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing’ by Aerosmith, and when it’s over you go get pancakes. What part of that isn’t awesome?”

“This year’s theme is ‘Lifetimes Past,’” Momo dryly informed him.

“Exactly. In any case, I have dreamed of taking Rukia to prom for years, are you going to help me write her a love letter or not?”

Izuru groaned. “I don’t know why Rukia gets such crummy grades, because she’s actually very smart. She is definitely going to be able to tell that you didn’t write this.”

“I know that! You think I don’t know how smart she is? Look, I just want you to write it all nice in Kira-speak, and then I’ll translate it into dumbass. Just help me get my thoughts together. You know I don’t word good, but I really think that writing it out and giving her a chance to process it on her own is the best way to go about this.”

Momo turned sad eyes on Izuru, not that his resolve wasn’t already crumbling. Abarai was a goon and a bonehead, but his devotion to his long-time best friend was tooth-rottingly sweet. Izuru would feel like a villain in a Christmas special if he said no.

“Fine. Fine. But I want you to help me get the Festiva running again and I get to approve whatever it is you’re planning on wearing to prom. It better have sleeves, for one thing.”

“Deal!” Renji replied, his face splitting into a huge grin.

Izuru turned to a clean page in his writing notebook and licked the tip of his pen. “Dear Rukia,” he narrated.

“No! Don’t put her name!”

“Don’t put her name?”

“No names. I have seen a lot of teen movies, and notes like these always end up in the wrong hands. Rukia would die if something like that happened. Or if her brother found it, he would straight up murder me and then I wouldn’t get to go to prom.”

Izuru blinked at him. “Fine. No names.” He tapped his pen against the page. “ ‘We have been friends for a long time, and I feel that the time has come for me to make a clean breast of it. You are the most important person in my life. I am utterly besotten--”

“Er, hey, um, Izuru.” The tips of Renji’s ears were very pink. “Not to say that this isn’t, um, true, but I was thinking more along the lines of ‘Do you want to go to prom? JUST AS FRIENDS’ Maybe that part could be all in caps? or underlined? We could put in some little boxes that she could just check off ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and hand it back to me?”

Izuru raised one eyebrow. “But you don’t want to go ‘just as friends.’”

“Well, that’s true, yes, but this is Rukia we’re talking about, so you kinda have to ease her into things.”

Izuru regarded Renji with lidded eyes. “You can’t even ask her to prom as friends? You’re such a coward.”

“I’m not a coward,” Renji returned, but his voice was very small.

“You’re sixteen and I do not like to throw the word ‘love’ around, but it’s very obvious that you love Rukia, and I refuse to help you ask her to the prom as friends. You don’t have to admit everything, but you have to admit something. It’s go big or go home.”

“Okay,” Renji grumbled.

“I think he’s right,” Momo said, patting Renji’s hand. “She must wonder how you feel about her from time to time. If you insist on framing it ‘as friends’, she may actually view that as a rejection of the possibility of anything romantic ever happening between the two of you.”

Renji wrinkled his nose, but didn’t say anything.

“Ahem,” Izuru cleared his throat. “Let’s put in some compliments. What are some things you like about Rukia?”

“Things he liked about Rukia” was one of Renji’s very favorite subjects, and he perked up right away. “She’s cool,” he announced. “She’s cool as hell. Write that down.”

“I think you’re cool as hell,” Izuru wrote down reluctantly. This is not your love letter, he reminded himself. No one is even going to know you had anything to do with this.

“Your hair smells really good and you’re the most creative person I know,” Renji dictated. “You have incredibly sexy biceps.”

“Renji.”

“What? She does!”

“Fine, fine. That’s probably enough compliments, we need to keep this to one page. Um, what do you regard as your primary ‘ship symbolism?”

“My what now?”

“You know. When you think about Rukia and yourself, what metaphor springs to mind? Sun and moon? Sea and sky? King and lionheart?”

Renji looked utterly perplexed.

“Momo, help me out. How do you see you and Aizen-sempai?” “Doctor and Companion,” Momo answered immediately.

Izuru made a face. “Right.”

Renji’s face was screwed up in hard thought. Izuru could practically smell circuitry frying. “Rukia is like… a star?” he finally hazarded.

“A star is good!” Momo encouraged.

“And you are…?” Izuru prompted. “The moon? The sky? A different star?”

“A Camaro?” Renji guessed. “I’m loud and I have a powerful engine.”

“How are you even in AP Literature?” Izuru groaned.

“Well, what’s your dominant simile or whatever with Shuuhei?” Renji demanded.

“Poet and warrior,” Izuru snapped back testily.

“Which one of you is the warrior?” Momo asked, wrinkling her nose. “I mean, you both work on the school newspaper.”

“Shuuhei takes tae kwon do!” Izuru insisted.

“Well, why don’t you just write in whatever you’re gonna say for the poet-warrior thing, since you’ve obviously already put a lotta thought into it,” Renji suggested. “I’ll polish up my star/sportscar metaphor and drop it in when I copy it over.”

Izuru did not like leaving the keystone of a love confession in the hands of a man who thought manual transmissions were romantic, but he had to go on shift down at the food court in half an hour. He had to keep this moving. “Fine,” he bit off. “‘You are my muse. Your strength of body and spirit inspire poetry in me. My soul sings when I am with you. If only I had your bravery, this admission would be much easier. Instead, I am sending you this shy missive to ask, from the depths of my tender heart: Will you go to the prom with me?’ Done.”

“Oh, that was so romantic,” Momo sighed. “Izuru, you should write a romance novel.”

“Never,” Izuru replied.

Renji was making a Renji face.

“You hate it.”

“It was just… pretty flowery.”

“Rewrite it however you want. ‘My soul revs at 5000 rpm for you, right before I drop my rusty bumper in your brother’s driveway again.’”

“Don’t trash talk Zabimaro!”

“I would never trash talk Zabimaro, I was trash talking the metaphorical Camaro that is your love for Rukia.” Izuru ripped the page out of his notebook and handed it over. “Here you go. I gotta go to work. Beef n’ Cheddars don’t assemble themselves.”

Renji studied the page for a moment. “Thanks, Izuru. You won’t regret this.”

“I already regret it. Good luck. I still think you should just talk to her.”

“Well, I think you should ask Shuuhei!” Renji barked out suddenly. “I know you want to! You can go to Denny’s with us afterward!”

Izuru flashed him a pitying look. “Thank you for your concern, but I happen to share the opinion that prom is lame and I have no plans to attend.”

When Izuru walked into the gaming store the next day, Ikkaku and Iba were sitting at the front table, assembling decks of Magic cards.

“The girls took over the back,” Ikkaku grumbled bitterly as he contemplated a Thicket Basilisk.

“Is Renji here?” Izuru asked. “He said he was coming today.”

“Haven’t seen him,” Iba grunted. “Your friend Hinamori is, though.”

Izuru had been trying to maintain his usual heavy veneer of Not Caring About Abarai’s Wretched Love Life, but secretly, he was dying to know how the note had gone over. Renji had said he was going to give it to Rukia after school, and then ghost off to soccer practice so she had time to think it over. Izuru thought this was the dumbest idea he had ever heard, apart from every other plan Renji had ever had.

There certainly was a lot of giggling coming from the back of the store. Rangiku was holding court on the couch, Momo and Rukia on either side of her. On the coffee table, half a dozen magazines featuring girls in sparkly dresses were scattered among the usual copies of Dragon and Wizard.

“I can’t decide if I want to go for a one-shoulder gown, or something completely strapless,” Rangiku was sighing. “Rukia, you have good shoulders, what are you thinking?”

Rukia mumbled something about lacking the necessary structural support for a sleeveless gown.

“You’d be surprised! It just needs to fit tightly enough!”

“You should come shopping with us on Saturday, Rukia!” Momo offered brightly. “You really don’t know what’s going to look good until you try it on.”

“Oh…” Rukia stammered. “My brother said he would buy me a dress. He said it’s important that I reflect well on the family.”

“Fortunately, your brother has killer taste,” Rangiku shrugged. “I would let him buy me all the dresses he wanted to.” She smiled her bright, friendly smile. “You could still come shopping, though, get some ideas of what you like! We could take some pictures to show him. I’m sure he takes input.”

Izuru had met Rukia’s brother. The man most certainly did not take input.

“Plus, it’ll just be fun to have you along!” Momo encouraged. “You have a great sense of style, I’d love to have your opinions!”

The portents looked auspicious, but Izuru needed positive confirmation. “Are you planning to go to the prom, Rukia?” he asked, flinging himself down in the ancient, creaky recliner. “I would have thought you were too cool for that.”

Two pink spots appeared on Rukia’s cheeks. “Yeah, I’m going, I guess.”

“You are not going to believe this, Izuru!” Rangiku gasped breathlessly. “But our Renji asked her to go with him!”

“Surely not!” Izuru scoffed, a pleasant feeling of satisfaction filling his chest.

“It’s just as friends!” Rukia protested. “And of course I don’t care about prom, but it means a lot to him, so…” she made a frustrated shrug.

Just.

As.

Friends.

Izuru shot a glare of horrified disbelief at Momo, who shrugged helplessly.

As if on cue, Renji’s mop of bright red hair poked around the edge of the Warhammer display. The couch backed to the front of the store, so Izuru could see him, but the girls couldn’t. Renji pointed emphatically at Rukia, and then stuck out his tongue victoriously, making a “hang loose” sign with his hand.

“I need to talk to you!” Izuru announced loudly, jumping up, grabbing Renji by front of his shirt, and hauling him into the aisle with all the ceramic dragon figurines. “You moron!” he hissed.

“I just did what you said!” Renji defended, holding up his hands.

“No, you didn’t! Did you even give her the note?”

“I did not. I thought about it, and I decided you were right. I talked to her with my actual voice. I told her I really wanted to go to prom with her, and she made a real cute face and then she said yes. Thank you. I couldn’t have done it without your help.”

Izuru squeezed his eyes shut. “But you’re going as friends.”

“Yeah, well, we are friends, and I’m okay with that. You know, it was the right move, anyway. The reason I was late is because her brother cornered me after work and lectured me for half an hour.”

“Byakuya went into the Foot Locker?” Izuru frowned, trying to picture it.

“Of course not. He would never go into a Foot Locker. He waited outside.”

Izuru admittedly hadn’t taken Rukia’s intense, overprotective brother into account, back when they were writing the note, even though he remembered Renji bringing it up. “Well, I’m glad you’re still alive.”

“Yeah, me too. I offered to wax his car, just immediately. That knocked him off his game a little.” Renji made a thoughtful face. “He, uh… was appreciative, actually. I guess Rukia’s been wanting to go to prom and pretending she doesn’t, and he thought I picked up on it and asked her because I’m a good friend.”

Izuru stared at Renji blankly. “What?”

Renji shook his head. “I can’t explain it. Kuchiki brains are weird. Anyway, he said I don’t have to wax his car, but he wants me to come over to dinner so he can pre-screen my table manners and I have to meet their scary grandfather.” Renji scratched his head. “I wonder if the old man has a car I could wax.”

Izuru let out a big sigh. “Well, I’m glad it worked out. Sort of. Even if you wasted a very good love letter that I worked very hard on.”

“You spent ten minutes on it, tops, and it did not go to waste.”

Izuru frowned. “What do you mean by that?”

“Don’t you feel like… like it helps to talk that stuff out? To put your feelings into words and write them down and look at them? I mean, I know it helped me, I was just thinking that maybe…”

“Give it up, Abarai,” Izuru mumbled. Whenever anything remotely good happened to Renji, he got really optimistic that all his friends could repeat his successes. When Izuru was in the right mood, it struck him as sort of sweet, but right now, it was just irritating.

Renji stuffed his hands in his pockets and huffed. “Look. Talking to Rukia was… it was easier than I thought. T’be honest, I pretty much expected her to turn me down cold.” He gave a wistful little smile. “We’ll just see how it goes, y’know? Might even be able to work up the nerve to ask her for a slow dance.”

Izuru shook his head. “You’re hopeless, Abarai.”

“Yeah, well, takes one to know one.”

“We are not the same,” Izuru informed him pointedly. “I am a dreamer who pines for that which is out of his reach. You’re just a dumbass who can’t grab at the thing an inch in front of him.”

Renji gave one of his big, open shrugs. “Say what you want about me, but I have grabbed. It’s hard to judge distance when you’re too close to it. I’m just saying that I don’t think your dreamy moon poet is as far off as you think.”

“Why do you always listen to me exactly enough to misunderstand everything I say?” Izuru griped.

“I am a dumbass, you had me there.” He stood up straighter. “But Rukia is not a dumbass and I would like to go say hello to her before she thinks we’re making out back here in the sparkly dragon grotto like Ikkaku and Yumichika.”

“I heard that!” Ikkaku’s voice echoed through the store.

“Matsumoto is trying to convince her to get a strapless dress,” Izuru explained.

“Really? I’m in favor of that,” Renji grinned, his eyebrows raising. “She’s got the shoulders for it.”

“Go,” Izuru sighed, slapping his friend on the back.

As Izuru turned to follow Renji to the back sitting area, he saw Shuuhei hovering in the store’s main aisle. He was wearing a Tool t-shirt over a ratty grey henley with the elbows blown out. His hair looked like he put a bunch of gel in it and then immediately gone to a gymnastics class. There was a ‘69’ sharpied on his cheek. As usually, Izuru couldn’t believe how cool the guy was.

“Uh, hey, Izuru,” Shuuhei said, his voice uncharacteristically soft.

“Hey,” Izuru replied, trying to sound nonchalant. “Wondered if you were in today.”

Usually, Shuuhei would reply with some joke about his loud co-worker, Mashiro, but instead, his fingers curled and uncurled around a piece of paper he was holding.

Hmm, Izuru thought absently. Shuuhei must use the same kind of notebook that I do.

Shuuhei’s eyes darted to the side, and then back to Izuru. “Hey, um, someone slipped a note in my locker today, but they didn’t sign it. I don’t, uh, want to be forward or anything, but I think… this might be your handwriting?”

The floor dropped away from Izuru’s feet. He was had been transported to the Elemental Plane of Mortification. His corporeal body had ceased to exist.

Suddenly, behind Shuuhei’s back, Renji and Momo appeared in the doorway to the back room, flashing huge grins and four enthusiastic thumbs up.

Izuru was going to kill them.
