Once again, I find myself disappointed by Devsis AND the cookie run community, and how alarmingly racist a lot of people are.
All screenshots and information gathered here are from twitter user @/Celezticuh.
This will be a discussion on not just Cookie Run: Tower of Adventures, but also the community's response against the wider issue. It's gonna be long, so buckle up.
1. What's going on with Cookie Run: Tower of Adventures?
To no one's surprise, it's racism against Black people and Indigenous people, yey! /S
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why is this an issue? Because these traditional practices and clothing of people of color (especially those of black and native american descent) have often been used as just costumes and props instead of being respected as what it is, a culture that is to be respected.
This is what Celezticuh has stated in greater detail about what is wrong:
Tumblr media
2. The community's response.
Celezticuh and several other members of the CRTOA discord have brought up this issue in the official discord server, but have experienced pushback FROM THE COOKIE RUN COMMUNITY ITSELF.
Here are some notable people defending this behavior.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let me be clear, as an asian myself, telling people that "Oh they're asian, they don't know!" Or "They don't care!" Is -newsflash- ALSO RACIST TOWARDS ASIAN PEOPLE??????
We here in asia face discrimination for not being light skinned, skinny, and colorism. It's not as bad as being the subject of extreme racism, but it has negative effects on our society. And it disgusts me how people genuinely think that just because they're korean, means they get a free pass to be disrespectful towards other people outside of their circle.
Secondly, they have fans INTERNATIONALLY. If they only cared about korean fans, they would not have as big of an impact on the wider scale as they do. They know we (the people outside of korea) have our eyes on them. And people who say that they don't know, are full of bullshit.
3. Why has there no action been taken against this?
A big issue as to why this has never reached Devsister's ears is because the Korean community isn't as outraged at this compared to the international audience. Now, I am not saying we should automatically assume any and all korean players are as racist as the company, but I'd chalk it up to ignorance, which still sucks let's be real.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that the international community has been calling for protests and asking for the trucks to be delivered again, but unless we have support from the korean community, it's looking to be highly unlikely.
So here we ask for people to help us get into contact with someone from the korean community who's willing to help get the trucks set up again.
--
I'm not the best at conclusions, however, I want to leave off with a message.
The cookie run community has festered some of the most racist, vile garbage of people I've ever seen. Not just towards black and non pale skinned people of color, but even towards the asians you claim to defend themselves (Dark Cacao, Affogato and Peach Blossoms are barely scratching the surface.).
Cookie run fans, please do better.

A Petrichor drabble

Happy Halloween Everyone!
Masterlist // Navigation
-------------------------------------------
Halloween was always your favorite holiday, your older brother often sneaking you out of the house to take you trick-or-treating, helping you hide the candy after the fact so your parents wouldn’t take it away from you.
Now, as an adult, you loved going to the pumpkin patches and doing other fall activities. Baking different fall inspired cookies, or just baking in general. Lighting your favorite fall scented candles and watching Halloween movies. Or even just cuddling with a blanket by the fire.
It was the week before the holiday, and you were talking with Haneul and Kangmin about the holiday, and how you celebrated it in the states. You learned that trick-or-treating isn’t really a thing, and neither is making jack-o-lanterns. Halloween costume parties were a big thing here though.
You were just telling them about the last costume you wore, before you came to South Korea, showing them a picture of you dressed as the Black Widow when a group of your coworkers walked by.
They were from the company that Bangtan bought out and had been merged with your building four a couple of weeks now. There was definitely a new hierarchy being established, especially with a numerous amount of alpha males coming in. Dominance being reestablished and it seemed like they had it out for everyone.
“Maybe you shouldn’t wear skintight clothes. No one wants to see your belly hanging out.” The man, Sangmin, squinted his eyes at your phone after ripping it from your fingers. You could almost feel his pheromones in the air, pushing out to exert force over you and Haneul.
“Hey, there is no need for this. Just give her the phone back.” Kangmin moved to step in between you, Haneul, and Sangmin, trying his best to diffuse the situation before the bosses noticed.
Sangmin just laughed, looking down as your picture again before showing it to his friends on either side of him. They too laughed at your costume. “No one wants to see this whale in her stupid costume anyways. What kind of a child still dresses up as a superhero?”
He practically throws your phone at you, making you stumble to grab it before it drops to the floor. Another group of people come over, this time a couple of women who also work here. You look at them, hoping they just walk past and don’t add onto anything, but your hopes were short-lived.
As you grabbed onto your phone, the picture on your phone had changed to one of you holding onto your carved pumpkin, a regular jack-o-lantern face adorning the orange food. When the woman in front sees it, she laughs.
“I thought only children do that. What are you, five?” You can slowly see how this is going to turn out and move to grab ahold of Kangmin’s arm to tug on it, telling him it’s not worth it when a door open down the hall.
The meeting room had been occupied for a couple of hours, and a couple of your mates were in there, Hoseok and Jungkook. The meeting was about the merge, and how best to incorporate the new employees.
Hoseok is the first to walk out, his eyes catching yours quickly, your sour scent making him latch onto your figure behind Kangmin, your friend in a protective stance. He could recognize the opposing force as a new alpha brought in through the merge, his stance forceful and menacing.
Hoseok did not like the way he was looking at you, nor did he appreciate the way you needed to be protected by someone in his own building. Everyone should know you are their mate.
Jungkook is the first to move, his own steps forceful and powerful as he moves in between the two groups, his hand immediately latching onto your own.
“Are you okay? What happened?” His eyes move quickly over your form, trying to identify if you had any physical injuries, getting slightly distracted by the way your thighs look in your outfit.
“We were just telling them that it is not appropriate to discuss outside activities within the work environment.” The man pushing his pheromones out, Sangmin, interjected before you could speak, causing Jungkook and Hoseok to roll their shoulders back, anger visible on their faces.
When Hoseok turned away from you, he saw the man who spoke straightening his stance, trying to suck up tothe bosses no doubt, he though. He had a large smile on his face, eyes turned up as he switches his eyes from both Jungkook and back to Hoseok.
“Oh, is that so?” Hoseok grins back, causing some of the workers in front of him to step back, Sangmin not feeling the same threat coming his way. He doesn’t even realize what he had started.
“Yes sir.” Jungkook cringes at the title, only liking it when it comes from your lips. “She was showing disgusting pictures to her friends and I said she should save it for after work.” Sangmin continued, placing his hands in his pants pockets like he did them a favor.
Hoseok turns back to you, his smile real this time as he holds his hand out. “And what were these pictures?” He opens your phone up with his own fingerprint causing Sangmin’s eyes to narrow in confusion before quickly changing back when Jungkook glares at the man.
Your phone immediately opens up to the photo of you as Black Widow, Hoseok’s eyes widening and his cock hardening against his pants. He has to use all of his control to stop the moan that wants to leave his lips. His knuckles turn white as he tightens his grip on your phone.
“Oh, darling, why haven’t you shown us these pictures before?” Hoseok turns to you, Jungkook peeking over his shoulder to see the picture, his own reaction mimicking Hoseok’s.
“I didn’t know you would want to see them?” You shrug, your shoulders still turned in, trying to make yourself appear smaller.
“I’m gonna send it in the group chat. I already know Jiminie is gonna wanna see you in it in person.” Jungkook takes your phone from Hoseok, grin to his lips as he imagines Jimin cumming in his pants at the sight of your thighs in your costume. Namjoon as well.
Sangmin’s “powerful” stance was now faltering, his confidence in the situation long gone as he notices the comfortability with you and the two CEOs. He looks between you and the CEO’s, seeing the smirk on Haneul’s face as she stares him down. Taking the opportunity, Haneul speaks up.
“Y/n was just telling us about the different traditions for Halloween in America and we were telling her about our own. When she was showing us her in her costume, Sangmin came up and decided he would make fun of her for it. He called her a child and said, ‘who would want to see this clown in a costume anyway?’ after he grabbed her phone out of her hands.” Sangmin was quick to recognize his new situation, how fucked up he was, when both CEO’s turned to him, their eyes gold as their alpha’s take control.
“You called our mate a whale?!” Jungkook growled out, his body now in front of yours, a protective stance taking over as he tries to shield you from the perceived threat.
Sangmin’s eyes widen at the new information, not knowing the bigger women was the CEO’s mate. He had heard about it, people talking and gossiping, but he never knew who it was. Until now, and it was already too late for him.
“I want your things packed within in twenty minutes. If I see you near my omega again, you won’t live to see another day.” Hoseok’s alpha was poise, his control never wavering as he moved closer, now almost touching the other alpha’s nose with his own. He was doing everything in his power to keep from attacking the poor excuse of an alpha.
Sangmin was shaking in his leather shoes, fear leaking into his pheromones as he nods his head, quickly rushing off to pack his things and leave. Everyone knew not to underestimate the CEO’s, especially when it concerns their mate. Everyone in the city knew what happened with Jinae and knew better than to try anything.
When you finally peeked over Jungkook’s shoulder, you saw that everyone but Haneul and Kangmin had scattered, everyone scared over your fluffy alphas.
“C’mon baby, I wanna see you in a different costume.” Jungkook wraps his arm around your shoulder, tugging you away with a very large grin on his lips, a wink sent your direction as you let yourself be pulled away, knowing you aren’t going to be getting away any time soon. You just didn’t think he would be taking you home, where the rest of your mates were waiting for you.
A huge nest was waiting for you when you walked in, courtesy of Jimin and Jin, both standing in front of it with proud expressions and their hands on their hips. The others sat on the couch behind the nest, smiles on their lips as well but you could see the tension caressing their shoulders.
“Hi baby.” Jimin was the first to break the silence, coming forward and pulling you in, his lips capturing yours and tongue pushing past your lips to taste you. His hands moved to your lower back and continued to move lower until he was cupping your ass, making a small whimper move past your lips.
“Okay, move it aside pup.” Jin nipped at Jimin’s ear before knocking him to the side, your elder mate moving in and giving you a kiss of his own before he pulls away.
“Sorry ‘bout him, baby. He loved the picture Koo sent everyone.” You look to Jimin and Jungkook, who both have impish looks aimed your way.
“In fact,” Namjoon spoke up, pulling a bag from behind his back. “He even went and got a costume for you to try on.” They all wore grins now, mischievous in nature and fully dark as if imagining already what the outfit might look like on you.
You take the bag from him cautiously, a little afraid of what the contents are given that your sneaky mate picked it out. You kept looking back to them, their grins never wavering as you enter the bathroom and close the door behind you.
When you opened the bag, you couldn’t help but sigh and place it on the counter.
It was a Red Riding Hood costume, complete with the iconic red hooded cape. You cringed a little, remembering when you wore a similar costume in elementary school, but knew for a fact that Jimin picked this costume because of the stockings and see-through top.
That foxy little wolf of yours.
Shaking your head, you took the costume out of the bag and replaced your clothes with it. You knew you could have fun with it, and you knew that’s exactly what your sneaky mates had in mind. You were a little excited to see their faces when you walked out, and hoped they were going to be as dramatic and excited as you thought.
“Grandmother? Are you home?” You called out to the boys as you walked into the living room once again, turning the corner to see their excited grins fall into dark, lustful gazes. Eyes going straight to your thighs or your breasts, you walked forward even more.
“Yes, dear.” Jimin played along, happy you were going with his idea.
“My, what big ears you have?” You took another step forward, holding the cape a little around yourself causing small groans to leave your mates’ lips.
“Better to hear you with, my dear.”
“And what big claws you have.” Jimin moved forward, taking your hint and letting his claws grow out, gripping your hips with them and pulling you in, a little moan leaving your lips at the feeling of him manhandling you.
“Better to hold you with, my dear.” He grinned, holding you flush against him. He was waiting for you to say the last words, his cock becoming incredibly hard in his jeans and by the way you smirked, he knew you felt it too.
“Hmmm.” You hummed, moving your hands to fiddle with his loosened tie, wringing it your hands and making Jimin groan in your grasp at his own impatience.
“My, my, what big teeth you have.” You finally whispered, causing the boys to stand up from the couch, slowly moving to circle around you and Jimin, closing you in.
“Oh, darling, what better to eat you with.” And with that, multiple pairs of lips were on your neck, one nibbling particularly hard. Jimin had grabbed you with his hand under your jaw, holding your head in place before surging forward, devouring your lips with his own.

Today has been a very important day for the future of Man Suang 🙏🏻
1. Pond’s story

Schedule:
"A meeting to introduce the movie Man Suang to the Ministry of Culture 11am - 1pm”
Pond’s comment:
Thank you a lot to the Ministry of Culture's team for praising and being ready to support "Man Suang" and to be interested in a new concept that we're trying so hard to make. Seeing this, Man Suang is definitely able to go far.

(Former Thai politician who served as Minister of Tourism and Sports)

Translation:
When Khun Nakrob Moonmanas (executive producer and the person who made the movie poster) showed me the clip of the movie “Man Suang”, of which he is overseeing the arts, I knew right away that I had to help to support it. Hence, i brought the team that produces the Thai movie Man Suang to meet Khun Wannasiri Morakul (the consultant of the Ministry of Culture) and the producer in charge of the movie, to receive advice on releasing and promoting the movie at an international level because it’s a film that’s exquisitely made, with the directors and actors all talented, promoting Thai arts and the costumes of Khon (masked danced), of the “Inao” (a Thai epic story adapted from the Panji tales) that is extremely beautiful. If this movie is released internationally, from Beijing, Cannes or Tokyo Film Festival, and Busan, South Korea, I am confident that the reputation of Thai movies will become a “Soft Power” creating the love of Thailand, promote Thailand, Thai history, Thai arts and tradition, Thainess, Thai people to be known more broadly.
4. Pond’s story
Tumblr media
Translation:
We used our own capital to do our best for all parties. We used our determination and sincerity to meet with the higher-ups and ask for support rather than ask for funding from The Thai government because what we want the Thai government to support is something money can't buy. If we could buy it, we would buy it already no hesitation hahaha. When there are higher-ups involved, we can promote the movie to go out globally too. A new thai beauty like “ Mansuang” is going to reach the hearts of people all over the world. Excitedly waiting.

What is lion dancing? You've mentioned it before, but I don't think I've seen it before
I'm particularly new to the world of lion dancing myself, but I hope this could also help! Lion dancing is a Asian tradition that blends puppetry, martial arts, and dancing that has been around 206 BC. Although it originated from China, countries like Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and South-East Asian countries have their own respective forms of lion dancing. There's actually quite a few types out there, but they can be identified by their martial art forms, lion heads, or nationalities. I'm probably going to info dump now so I'll cut it here for others to read if they'd like.
Before we get into that, I have to clear some common misconceptions. Lions are NOT dragons. Dragons are puppets that generally have 6 or 9 people holding it up on poles and are long (龙 lóng - do you get the joke lol). Foo dogs are technically lions, but the terminology was derived from white people who mistook lions as chow chow dogs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To clear further confusion, the reason they're called lions is because allegedly, when China started trading with the western world, lions and their pelts were only reserved for the wealthy. Poor people spread word about what lions looked like, and it somehow turned out that way. There's a lot of mythology surrounding why people do lion dances, but the shorter version is that the lion scares off demons and ill-intentioned spirits from villages. It's now a tradition at openings of businesses, weddings, funerals, and festivities.
Most people are generally used to seeing southern Chinese or Cantonese lions. Traditionally, all of these lions are male and have different variations, again based on nationality or style of martial arts that it's derived from. There are northern lions, which have a male and female (red and green bows respectively), as well as Japanese and Korean lions, which are mostly comprised of wooden masks and long fur.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll mostly focus on southern Chinese lions, but they're all pretty neat! I mostly practice Fut-San lion dancing, which is a pretty common form. They notably have a ":3" face and the style of martial arts (wushu) is considered a very common standard for southern Chinese lions. Recent variations of these lion heads also have pom-poms as they are derived from Beijing opera costumes. Each lion also has a pointed horn on the top. They can also have fluffy or wiry fur for its eyelids and mouth, but there exists variations with bristles instead, which may signify that the lion is based on a historical military figure (kind of similar to how Beijing opera singers do specific makeup for specific characters).
These are generally more common in other countries. South-east Asian versions of the lions are extremely decorated, intricate, and distinct.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hok-San lions are also pretty common. They are distinguished by having a "snake" horn which means the horn curls into a circle at the end and a ":)" face.
Tumblr media
Despite their differences, all southern lions have a mirror in the front to ward off evil spirits, some horn with a bow attached, and a beard. Traditionally, the mirror is there to scare off spirits who look into it. The horn is generally added after the lion is almost finished being made, and the bow on the horn is added ceremoniously to bless the lion and honor the gods. It is highly recommended people don't touch them, save for the practical reasons of dirtying the mirror or tearing off the delicate horn, but also to avoid getting bad luck from ill-intentioned spirits.
That aside, I'd like to finally to talk about what to do when you see lions! If you have red pockets of money, the lion eats them up (and the performer in the head puts everything in their sweaty shirt). Sometimes, lions go and play with the audience, so feel more than welcome to pet them or play fight with them! Each performer has their own distinct personality that they play in the lion and as a result, have a lot to share with the audience!
I could go on and on, but I'm afraid this is really long for no reason. I hope this info dump helped!

[Hanfu・漢服]Chinese Ming Dynasty Traditional Clothing Hanfu (翟衣) & Phoenix Crown (鳳冠)  Reference to Ming Dynasty Relics & Empress Portrait

【History Note】
Diyi (Chinese: 翟衣), also called known as huiyi (褘衣) and miaofu (Chinese: 庙服), is the historical Chinese attire worn by the empresses of the Song dynasty and by the empresses and crown princesses (wife of crown prince) in the Ming Dynasty.
The Diyi also had different names based on its colour, such as yudi, quedi, and weidi. It is a formal wear meant only for ceremonial purposes. It is a form of shenyi (Chinese: 深衣), and is embroidered with long-tail pheasants (Chinese: 翟; pinyin: dí or Chinese: 褘; pinyin: hui) and circular flowers (Chinese: 小輪花; pinyin: xiǎolúnhuā). It is worn with guan known as fengguan (lit. 'phoenix crown') which is typically characterized by the absence of dangling string of pearls by the sides. It was first recorded as Huiyi in the Zhou dynasty(1050–221 BCE).
The Diyi follows the traditional Confucian standard system for dressing, which is embodied in its form through the shenyi(深衣) system. The garment known as shenyi(深衣) is itself the most orthodox style of clothing in traditional Chinese Confucianism; its usage of the concept of five colours, and the use of di-pheasant bird pattern.
【 Influence to Other Country】
Korea
Korean queens started to wear the Diyi (Korean: 적의; Hanja: 翟衣) in 1370 AD under the final years of Gongmin of Goryeo, when Goryeo adopted the official ceremonial attire of the Ming dynasty. Same as the early Korea Joseon, were bestowed by the Ming Dynasty.
According to the Annals of Joseon, from 1403 to the first half of the 17th century the Ming Dynasty sent a letter, which confers the korea queen with a title along with the following items: 翟冠(Ming womens whose husband held the highest government official posts can wear this kind of crown, different from Ming Empress Phoenix Crown 鳳冠), a vest called 褙子(Beizi), and a 霞帔(Xiapei). However, the Diyi sent by the Ming dynasty did not correspond to those worn by the Ming empresses as Joseon was considered to be ranked two ranks lower than Ming.
Instead the Diyi which was bestowed corresponded to the Ming women's whose husband held the highest government official posts. In the early Ming Dynasty period, the Diyi were given to Korea Joseon By Ming, but after the Ming Dynasty reformed the clothing system, The Ming Dynasty bestow the 大衫( Dà shān) to the Korean queen instead of Diyi. The Diyi worn by the Korean queen and crown princess was originally made of red silk; it then became blue in 1897 when the Joseon king and queen were elevated to the status of emperor and empress.
it then became blue in 1897 when the Joseon king and queen were elevated to the status of emperor and empress.
After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, the system of China granting clothing to Korea was interrupted. Korea Joseon were forced to become tributary state of the Qing Dynasty. Korea Joseon carried out "nationalization" based on the costumes bestowed by the Ming Dynasty in the past.  But according <Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty Volume 46> "嬪宮冊禮時, 旣有翟衣, 則當有翟冠, 而我國匠人不解翟冠之制。 考諸《謄錄》, 則宣廟朝壬寅年嘉禮時, 都監啓以: ‘七翟冠之制, 非但匠人未有解知者, 各樣等物, 必須貿取於中朝, 而終難自本國製造, 以爲之?’ 云則宣庙有: ‘冠則制造爲難。’ 之敎。 “
Although Korea Joseon has Diyi, but no craftsman know how to make 翟冠(Di Guan), and the materials needed for make 翟冠(Di Guan) need to be taken from China (which need money for that). After all, it is difficult to manufacture in Korea. Therefore, Korea Joseon has not worn 翟冠(Di Guan) since the fall of the Ming Dynasty and change it to 대수머리(大首머리)

Kamikotized Hero Design
Working on writing the first Hero Shadybug and Claw Noir fought. It’s rather long so in order to save space, I wanted to describe the costume’s finer details here, along with reference pics. If anyone is a talented artist and is accepting commissions, I would be most grateful~
Mireille Caquet as kamikotized hero “Faerie Weather”
Her design is a combination of her weather powers and a korean “fairy” from folklore, a tribute to her korean heritage as well has a pun on “Fair weather” which is the opposite of the “Stormy Weather” akumatized villain that Hawkmoth created.
(In the universe of Shadybug and Claw Noir, Aurora became the weather girl instead of Mireille, but rather than being bitter about it, she is supportive of her friend but wishes there was something she could do when terrible weather conditions threaten to destroy a very important event)
Her hairstyle is the same but her hair is now a pale lavender and her eyes a golden sun yellow. Instead of her normal human ears, she has long, pointy, elf-like ears that stick out of her hair for a cute, pixie-ish effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She wears a korean hair band and the ornament in the middle of her forehead looks like the sun peeking out from behind a gray cloud and there are 3 strands of blue, raindrop shaped beads that hang down. (See reference photo for hair ornament placement)
Tumblr media
Via make-up, her face is just slightly paler than her usual color and she has more pink peachy blush on her cheeks than usual, a bold, bright lucky red lipstick (to symbolize strength), and peachy-red and white eye make-up that is dramatic but modernly stylish rather than traditional. (See eye make-up reference photo)
Tumblr media
Her costume is similar to hanbok (traditional korean wear) with the jeogori (top) being a bright sky blue with white trim and canary yellow ribbon bow. There is sparse embroidery on the blue section and it looks like fluffy white clouds with an occasional rainbow. Sleeves are traditional shape and length.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The chima (skirt) is shorter than traditional length, like a casual modern hanbok style or that of a magical school-girl (but not pleated or ruffled) it comes to just above the knees but the majority of the upper thigh is still covered because while Mireille is a modern teen, she still dresses modestly because that is her comfort level.
Tumblr media
The skirt is white, as is her leggings- not only because it symbolizes purity and innocence, but because white hanbok in korea represent resistance and petition against injustice and abuse of authority (it does not symbolize death like a white kimono does in japan).
There is very little embroidery on the bottom edge of the skirt and it looks like golden outlines of shining suns. (Optional if you think it looks too busy)
Her shoes are traditional unhye in canary yellow- to represent taking action.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(These are to incorporate the 5 colors of korea which is found in most traditional wear, with the exception of black (death) which has been replaced with the pale lavender for a gentler look.)
Her item that contains the kamiko is a traditional rounded hand fan, dandeon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tasseled knot hanging from the bottom of the fan is rainbow. The picture painted on the paper part of the fan changes depending on the power she wishes to use- if she wanted to use the power of wind, she would spin the handle to flip the fan to the other side and you would see a picture of a gust of wind blowing away clouds. For rain, flip again and the picture changes to dark clouds with rain falling, etc. Then it is simply a matter of waving the fan in the direction she wishes the selected weather to go, just like how in canon, Stormy Weather/Climatika had to point her parasol to direct her powers. Please draw a weather symbol of your choice. It should be simple and cute- like the kind you would expect a teen weather girl to show the forecast on a map.
She does not fly with wings, but like an asian dragon does not fly but rather grabs clouds to crawl across the sky, Fairy Weather steps on tiny blue balls of flame (no bigger than tennis balls) like stepping stones. (This is another nod to old Korean folklore).
She still has Mireille’s gentle smile.
Tumblr media
Unlike the garish/clownish villains that Hawkmoth creates, the kamikotized heroes that Betterfly creates are beautiful/handsome/cute and actually stylish.

Miss Universe Korea 2022 National Costume: Sunset of Korea
Portraying the beautiful sunset of Korea, magnificent colors are expressed through 27 different layers of the skirt. As hanbok is called the clothes of the wind, each layer moves along with the movement to create the most unique and gorgeous mixture of colors. The true beauty of hanbok is portrayed with the elegant lines that are created throughout the garment. And the different lines created with the movement is the art of traditional hanbok.

Dong Son Drums, relics from the Red River Delta which date all the way back to 600 BCE, are carved with dancing figures; That is how integral dancing has been to Vietnamese culture. The dominant kinh ethnicity in Vietnam have developed a variety of dance forms over the centuries, apart from the traditional dances each of the 54 minority groups in Vietnam has. All of these have given rise to a vibrant performance culture in Vietnam, characterized by extravagant costumes, heavy make-up and Nhã Nhac ('elegant' music of the Imperial Court) tunes. Traditional Vietnamese dance can be classified as:
1. Dragon/Lion Dance
Tumblr media
The Lion Dance, one of the most popular traditional dances in Vietnam
The yellow and red dragon is a well-known Chinese motif that signifies power and good fortune. It has been tweaked and adapted into Vietnamese culture, and is a common sight on Vietnamese festivals such as Tet (The Vietnamese New Year) and the Mid-Autumn festival as well as events like business openings. It is usually accompanied by acrobatics and martial arts and creates an atmosphere of festive merry-making.
2. Fan Dance
Tumblr media
Fan Dance or Vu Phien, a Traditional Vietnamese Dance gaining popularity in Southeast Asia
As the name suggests, 4 or 5 dancers dance with beautiful fans are a part of the fan dance, which is believed to have originated in meadows and open fields. The fan dance is meant to delight the audience while the dancers imitate flowers gliding gently on the breeze, which makes this a unique art form that is fast gaining popularity in neighbouring countries such as China and Korea.
3. Hat Dance
Tumblr media
Performance of the Hat Dance in Vietnam
The hat dance, like the fan dance, is another incredible cultural dance in Vietnam that breathes synchronicity. Hat dancers twirl around gracefully while they exchange and manoeuvre their large bamboo hats, a homage to the farmers who work hard in the fields and provide grain. The dance usually ends with the dancers inviting volunteers to participate with them on the stage, so that the show ends on a memorable note.
4. Lantern Dance
Tumblr media
The Lantern Dance, a Traditional Dance of Vietnam with Buddhist Roots
This one is a visual delight. Dancers hold and glide in between lanterns, which sometimes surround idols or statues. It is performed on New Years and is a favourite of children. After the performance, the dancers let go of their lanterns which float towards the sky together with balloons and fireworks to create a stunning night scene.

Jerome comes to Lackadaisy wearing a hanbok to celebrate the Korean Chuseok, but he has a paper bag in his hand. Jerome hands it to David, inviting him to try on the traditional costume... Although Korea was forcibly annexed by Japan, its spirit will live on forever.
Jerome is what my profile picture looks like. Jerome's mother is Korean.

Making a folk skirt for my cold legs
Tumblr media
Back in the before times—which I guess for most people means before COVID-19, but for me means before chronic illness smashed my world to bits—I used to do a lot of couture-style sewing. I have sewen entire historical ensembles. I sewed my own wedding dress. I thread traced and pad stitched and flat-lined. I was in love with the idea of fashion and wanted to engage with it on a sophisticated level. The problem was I didn't like anything I made.
Not only do I have a hard-to-fit body, but I have an electrolyte disorder that fucks up my hormones and makes my body size fluctuate like wild. When I could get things to fit well, they inevitably didn't fit well a month later. And the things I made were either too costumey for me to wear or too boring for me to enjoy. The sheer amount of money, and effort it took to create a garment I didn't like or could not wear destroyed my interest in sewing. I took a break for many years, though as sick as I was I could not have sewn even if I had wanted to. In the past few years, I have had the opportunity to live in Bulgaria for a few months at a time, here and there, slowly soaking up the culture. There I discovered my passion for Slavic folk attire. I have had the opportunity to view some amazing pieces up close at museums and festivals and to see countless up-close photos on Bulgarian buy/sell websites. Something that slowly wormed its way into my brain as I spent time appreciating these garments is how wonderfully flawed they are. I don't mean that they are not skillfully created. They, of course, vary from roughly made amateur attempts to some of the most amazing textile work I have ever seen. What they lack is the rigid rules of couture. The stuffy conventions that define high fashion are conspicuously and freeingly missing from these garments. They are not fitted but instead tied and belted into shape. Trimmings can be added ad-hoc with little coordination as old ones are replaced or new fancier ones can be obtained. Tunics, vests, skirts, and aprons are mostly stand-alone things and not part of a coordinated ensemble. Each item is beautiful and meaningful but modular. And most of all they tend to be extremely size adjustable. Not custom fit for one single body, but designed for any body that garment might be handed down to. Cue this winter, when I was once again looking with dread at the pants in my closet, knowing the things that fit were not warm enough for winter and dreading another round of buying things. There is a growing online trend for sewing historic-inspired adjustable clothing and I knew what I needed was an adjustable over skirt for going out. It needed to be long, warm, and easy to throw on over whatever I was wearing in the house. I wanted something that visually paid homage to the Slavic folk wear I love but their tie-on construction method wasn't going to work. Traditionally these skits had a long slit from the waistband down and tied shut. The ties let the skirt adjust to your size but the front would gap and was not very modest. This is why many historic European costumes include an apron. When wearing skirts of this type the apron covered this slit and provided complete modestly. Also, you have to either step into or drop these skirts over your head which wasn't what I wanted. While pondering how I wanted to make this I stumbled upon a video from "Sewing Therapy" about reversible hanbok skirt construction. The Hanbok is a traditional garment in Korea and like much traditional clothing, a very simple design made mostly of rectangles. As I understand it, and my understanding is poor, the skirt variant is a relatively modern creation. It has a waistband, two ties, and a large pleated panel. Importantly for me, the hanbok is made on the straight grain and not gored, or cut on the circle, just like Slavic folk skirts. They are very size adjustable and can be layered over any under clothes easily making them the perfect outer layer for winter.
I do not in any way claim that what I made in the end is a traditional hanbok. Pleated skirts with a waistband are a pretty pan-cultural idea and are frequently used in the construction of traditional European skirts as well, but the idea of making a pleated panel into a wrap skirt is something I first saw with this hanbok video and I wanted to make a point to give credit to Sara its creator. I hit up my local thrift store for cotton sheets for this experiment and lucked out on this burgundy and cream pair. The burgundy side I hit up with black fabric spray paint and whip-stitched a burgundy ribbon from my stash. For the cream side, I dip-dyed it with procion dyes. I added a simple pocket bag on one side and then stamped it with my possum skull block from my trash coat project. I made a point just to get this made and not to care about seams matching or thread color. I just wanted to have fun sewing again. And ya know what? It is imperfect and weird and works amazing to keep my legs warm and I LOVE IT. I wear this skirt constantly. I love it so much I have started on my second version, this time with some vintage 90s dino sheets.

Character design rant below because this still bothers me but the gist is: Making Beezlebub a literal queen bee instead of a winged furry is actually more generic
Tumblr media
(Note these aren’t bad designs, generic designs can work and are not inherently bad, there’s no real original ideas it just how you express them. I just think being literal with Bee doesn’t work in the context of the narrative and character Viv has shared)
Making Bee a literal Queen Bee doesn’t make sense for her personality, role or even symbolically
For one she’s likely meant to be (part) hover fly than an actual bee. You know “you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar”? Plus the “Bee” aesthetic is likely meant to hide the uglier side of the gluttony ring (similar to how junk food looks good while being bad for your health)
Tumblr media
But for starters making her aesthetic more military/royalty, while it fits the general theme of “animal tamer queen bee”, you have to remember she’s meant to be below Lucifer in the hierarchy of Vivziepop’s Hell.
Lucifer is already meant to be the “Ring Leader” , so Bee dressing more like a traditional animal tamer would conflict with Lucifer’s role , as both ring leader and animal tamer have similar clothing.
(seriously Google “ring leader costume” and “animal tamer costume” and tell me it not just the same outfits being shown)
More than that, Bee is a party animal, and idk about everyone else but when I see someone in a formal outfit or even uniform with a matching crown , a serious hive mind army of bees and who may or may not be holding a whip , I think “this person is serious and strict, likely doesn’t even like sleeping past 9 pm” not “wow this person is gonna throw the wildest party in all of literal hell!”
If you want to ignore that the “original” Beezlebub was “lord of the flies”(and represented the sin of envy as well as gluttony), making her a literal bee still doesn’t make sense.
In nature bees are a hive species who are willing to sacrifice themselves for the safety of their hive. Bees are so hard working that they literally symbolise hard work , as well as wisdom and teamwork.
Nothing about bees actually connects them to the sin of gluttony besides maybe honey, and other animals such as bears who steal honey would make a better fit for gluttony than bees.
If anything , making a demon lord have bee aesthetics while dressed in royalty/military clothing and heavy in the “animal tamer” role (who was an animal abuser actually) is more….wrath than gluttony (I seen someone say they wanna give Bee Lion features to better suit the animal tamer element and uh, dude, lions are symbolically wrath or pride come on)
As gluttony is about lack of control and overindulgence , with a lot of the elements people have added to “fix” /redesign Bee give her the opposite elements that fit a character who is over controlling and strict.
Side note but which one would stick out like a sore thumb more in a hell hound party?
Tumblr media
So than, why did Vivziepop make her a fox of all things? Instead of a bear to fit better with the bee aesthetic , or a pig which is more traditionally seen as a symbol of gluttony
And yes it is partly a reference to Viv’s older animations such as Jay from “Die Young”, and because Viv likes furries
It’s more likely because foxes do symbolise gluttony , unlike bees
okay foxes are usually used for greed not gluttony, but people misinterpret greed and gluttony as the same just for money and food respectively. But even if we go with the proper meanings of them (greed being hoarding while gluttony being overindulgence) in many stories and folktales, what are foxes most known for?
Biting off more than they can chew
From “9”fantastic mr fox” getting cocky with his plans to steal food for his community, to folktales such as “the gingerbread man” where the fox betrays the gingerbread man for a quick snack and even to other countries such as Korea’s “the fox sister” where a fox spirit eats the livers of her brothers to try to become human
technically a wolf would work too, considering the role the big bad wolf has in various stories, though there’s other elements as to why Bee suits being a fox furry
Tumblr media
Yep, that sounds much more like a drug stealing party queen than the bee symbolim, yeah?
I know technically if Bee is meant to be the animal tamer than there should be various animal themed demons than just hellhounds and such but at that point one is better off making their own concept of a demon queen bee than remake Viv’s existing story fit their own standards
(Side note but if anyone wants to make their own hell story, I think a strict bee queen who does animal taming would work great as the ruler of the Seventh layer of hell if you use Dante as inspiration)
If you made it this far I do actually have criticisms of Bee’s original design
Tumblr media
Hair is an eye strain (especially in motion)
her fringe looks distracting and makes her lava lamp hair even more eye straining
(though I’d keep the lava lamp hair, just balance it better)
i don’t like that she’s meant to be the actual Beezlebub, I actually thought she was the daughter or even a custom made hellhound of Beezlebub’s
was disappointed my headcanon wasn’t true ;-;
Her wings should be more noticeable
I would personally keep her design with minor edits but have the real Beezlebub be a wolf fly hybrid demon, to play off the big bad wolf tropes and have Bee be someone who represents him in public so people aren’t as wary of the gluttony ring (like how the big bad wolf in little red riding hood and the 7 kids disguised himself to be more presentable before eating them)
Last point: Pretty sure her palette is meant to be the colours of the pansexual flag

a follow up from my yelling:
hi hello yes i have seen smol earth's instagram and it is a breath of fresh air. i don't have an instagram but i was actually considering breaking my social media abstinence vow to follow him lmao.
but i do actually have a few questions: why do you think thailand (instead of somewhere like taiwan where they actually have marriage equality) is the one giving us actually good genderqueer rep? do you think it has something to do with there being a "third gender"? why do you think taiwan aren't doing anything with genderqueer rep? and what are your predictions for korea and japan in terms of genderqueer representation in the future?
my bets are on kbl being second to feature a non-cis characer, based on the fact that we had a surprisingly well done trans character in a mainstreem k-drama.
thank you,
~linc
why do you think thailand (instead of somewhere like taiwan where they actually have marriage equality) is the one giving us actually good genderqueer rep? do you think it has something to do with there being a "third gender"
Hum yes I think it has to do with 3rd gender and cultural and linguistic malleability around ideas of gender and sexuality. I don't want to be biologically deterministic though. The two are linked, it's not necessarily that the one causes the other.
I’m assuming you are not including Pinoy and Vietnamese stuff? Because they had this covered from the start.
here more kinda stuff around this topic:
Queer Lens & Thai BL
BL Linguistics & Queer Identity I Am Gay versus I Like Men
Husband Wife Language in Thai BL (SOTUS, TharnType + a lot of 2022 BL)
Touch & Daisy in Secret Crush On You - Queer Coded Language and 3rd Gender Identity
Daisy, kathoey, 3rd third gender, Thai language & culture (and a bit of BL)
Thai BL Lacks Representation of Butch & Transgender Men (and why this has to do with Thailand's 3rd Gender)
my bets are on kbl being second to feature a non-cis characer, based on the fact that we had a surprisingly well done trans character in a mainstreem k-drama.
And... I'll take that bet because I'd win, Taiwan is the one who actually just put a femme in a manger role in their latest BL HIStory 5. Admittedly, a side and not a main but still, this is a pretty big deal for them.
Unless you count The New Employee’s pride college crew?
Why do I think Taiwan is so late to the party?
Well Taiwan is still very much Chinese in culture and aesthetics (for all its westernization). China doesn't have much of a history portraying cross dressing or other visual markers of queerness in their pop culture, legends, or mythos. Every culture has some, of course. Korea does (mostly women cross dressing as men, which they flipping LOVE). Japan really does (check out Edo period Wakashu for an epic historical mind fuck) also they LOVE (fetishize) gender bending, crossdressing, and intentional androgyny on the main, and have a strong tradition of queer films and representation (just not much in JBL for source yaoi reasons). So I think Japan probably actually got there first, just not in the shows we follow (see soemthing like 2015′s Udagawachou de Matteteyo or 2021 Colorful Love: Genderless Danshi ni Aisareteimasu)
I think a country's heritage even if it's staged cross dressing (men as women) for punch down humor (as we see throughout Western history) plays into how and what queerness is depicted by that country in pop culture's modern iteration. Also how it crawls down its own path to acceptance and representation in the entertainment industry.
What are your predictions for korea and japan in terms of genderqueer representation in the future?
Japan we are gonna (I hope) see some more out gay/queer actors in leading roles, as well as a skew more kinky stuff in general, and more androgynous visuals plus cross dressing their characters for stage, comedy, or fantasy etc... (See My Love Mix Up for an example of this).
Never discount Japan if they have access to maid costume.
Or a butler/waiter uniform for that matter.
Korea I don’t know. I think butch lesbians are more likely from them as side characters than anything else and even then, I’m not confident. They like gender bending in their kpop fashion but they like their male mannerisms to be super masc there, clearly. Manic pixie dream boy = yes, but actual femme =  seems pretty frowned upon, if not outright bashed. (See the Holland incident.)
Taiwan: even though they are unquestionably the queerest country to produce BL, and the only one with marriage equality, Taiwan is very invested in super masc presenting BL leads. (As, indeed, was China in its BL heyday.) It's kinda a matter of taste but also a kinda in your face:
our two men and manly men and they wanna fuck each other. Whacha gonna do about it?
Is this a bit of a side effect of leaning hard away from seme/uke and Thailand's obsession with imposing a heterosexual skew on their BL? Maybe. Taiwan also distinguishes itself by rarely adapting from graphic novel content, or even novels, so they are particularly separated from a literary tradition that likes the skewed het-ness of seme/uke.
Also all these countries are following a trend, which is towards more and better queer rep of the kind that is partly dictated by global taste. (Well, except Japan, of course. Because Japan sticks to its lanes.)
BL is getting not only queerer than we supposed it could, but queerer than we can suppose.
