hope yall know i do not care much about marinette’s struggles rn im so sorry.
it sucks. it’s a shitty situation. that’s terrible. um. has anyone asked adrien how he feels about all this tho?
wait no sorry, he doesn’t know.
ok let’s talk about what he does know. has anyone asked him how he’s hanging in there with his dad being dead? oh he’s fine now and just moved on and the plot isn’t really about him so it doesn’t matter?
cool yeah yeah ok.
excuse the sarcasm but this season trying to make me focus on how marinette feels is lowkey insane idk. like. she’s been dealt a shitty hand, especially as a teen, but we’ve been going through this for the past 5 seasons. she’s always dealt a shitty hand and gets priority over everyone but like. adrien? i mean???? his dad was hawkmoth and the world reset and he’s not even a real human??????
come on, is anyone gonna spill the beans? at this rate, nino’s gonna find out before adrien even gets a whiff of any of this.
chances are, like usual, he’s gonna find out by mistake and it’s gonna be 2 episodes about how bad marinette feels about it all with adrien coming in at the end to say “i thought about it (off screen) and have decided there’s no problem. thanks for trying your best :)”

i mean like you get piercings other places too…. like obvi a couple on the ears, maybe a nose stud, eyebrow piercings…..
not gonna name any other ones let’s stick with those
If Hawkmoth can turn all the miraculi into ugly ass rings, Marinette can turn them into like, studs or something and wear all nineteen on her ears. Don't ask me how many earring one ear can fit I don't know

Representation and Recreation
Usual disclaimers: I like the show, I liked season 5, I had a lot of fun with the finale and I think it had a lot of great elements, like Bug Noir and Kung Fu Jagged Stone. I don't intend to be salty (though whether it is salt is, of course, up to you), I'm generally watching the show and in the fandom to have fun, not to complain, and season 5 as a whole delivered on fun.
With that out of the way:
Goddammit, this fucking season 5 finale! I want to write analysis posts, but I can't make heads or tails of it. I've seen analysis posts by others, and I've reblogged some, but I think all of them are lacking, both the ones that like the finale and the ones that don't.
For example, part of me wants to make a post explaining how the finale really only makes sense if you see it as three parts, taking Representation into account, and what it tells us about Adrien, Marinette, Felix, Kagami and Sentimonsters. I would really like that to be true. But then I start thinking about this, and it turns out I don't actually have a thesis here, it's just that Representation is a way better episode that sets up a completely different finale.
Think about it. Representation's "A" plot is that Marinette learns about the history of Felix and Adrien through an avant-garde theatre show. I think this is the best visual storytelling the show has ever had, and it's the prettiest too. Here, we learn about the Sentichildren, about Gabriel's role in creating them, and how Gabriel is a threat to them. And the Sentichildren need help, from Ladybug. As the presentation ends and morning dawns, it seems like Marinette has understood all that, and resolved to help the sentis.
This has no bearing on the finale whatsoever. Marinette learns that Gabriel is evil, again, and is surprised, again. In retrospect it almost seems like she thought there was a third Adrien-Felix cousin or something. The sentibeings don't appear, it's all about the wish.
Meanwhile, Adrien's plot is all about him beating the crap out of his father, and finally telling him off. This toxic relationship is finally severed. Adrien is still under his father's control, but he's managed to see him for who he really is, and articulate that, and finally symbolically defeat him, with the help of his friend. That's really great thematically, and it's arguably the culmination of the character growth we've seen all season.
This has no bearing on the finale whatsoever. Adrien just doesn't appear in the final battle whatsoever, and when he does appear (actually, who unlocked his cell?), he's just happy and seems to have made peace with the memory of his father again.
That's weird, right? If it weren't for Adrien and Kagami being imprisoned, Representation would have no impact on the finale at all, even though it's written as if it were the big lead in to the final big fight, where all the big thematic questions are brought out in the open.
Representation clearly sets up something, I think, but not the big season and arc finale that comes after it. Does it set up season 6? Does it set up anything at all? I certainly hope so!
Several people in the fandom have said that they trust the writers to pay this off. I'll be honest, I do not. This isn't meant as an insult to the writers, I enjoy the episodes they write, but the show just has a long history of doing things that look like setup that don't pay off. Marinette doesn't have trauma from Chat Blanc, she's got it from Kim. The Ladynoir conflict in season 4 ended up not that big a deal. Su-Han never mattered, and neither did the sisterly relationship between Zoé and Chloé.
(Aside: I have read all the posts explaining why it makes sense that Adrien isn't at the final battle, and none of them were convincing to me. Yes, it's Marinette's show, and I like that. They're not equals, no matter what the subtitle pretends. But to not have him around at all? His relationship with Marinette is the crucial engine of the show, and the whole thing with Gabriel also concerns him.
I particularly disagree with arguments that say Chat Blanc and Ephemeral proved it was a good idea to keep him out. He could have totally overcome whatever Gabriel put on him if the writers had chosen to write it that way.
The whole argument is flawed. It's a fictional tactical argument to explain away a real story issue. You can do that when discussing why the crew of the USS Enterprise didn't turn the Tricorder into a Transporter again or whatever, but this is a fun explanation, not an actual argument for why the story had to go this way.)
Anyway. This finale. I have no idea what it's about. I'm not even entirely certain I know what happened. I'm not sure the writers knew, and even if they do, they're certainly not saying. That is so, so weird. I love Bug Noir, though.

Bethany's Bizarre Miraculous Reviews: Episode 3-4 Backwarder
A lore episode. Probably why I haven't heard much about it. Anyways,
You know what you should do about Adrien and Kagami leaving to England, Marinette? You should give up and date Luka instead. He reciprocates your feelings.
Also I have to admire Juleka for bringing up the idea to kidnap Kagami. It wouldn't work because it's Kagami, but it's incredibly gutsy. I respect that. Either that or she's tired and doesn't want to be here.
Of course. Of course she gives them the wrong letters.
Ah, so that's what the fic where a tourist records Hawkmoth on the train was talking about. I seemed to have gotten Reverser and Backwarder mixed up.
On the topic of Backwarder, yeah, I think this is the worst Akuma design so far. Her powers are cool, though.
Ladybug, why didn't you just tell Chat Noir what were you going to do ahead of time?
Almost forgot: I've noticed the animation quality went up. Sweet!
I'm going to post another poll tomorrow. I need to know what's going on with my eeby deeby. Was it that Adrien looked all over for constipation pills that he thought Marinette needed that was romantic?
I'm taking a break here. The next episode features the Worst Akuma. Goddammit. After season 2 had nothing of her.

Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir the movie
Put shortly: I liked it. It was good times. Great animation, good storyline, good use of the characters, good time.
Tumblr media
Put slightly longer: I feel way more satisfied after watching this movie than I did watching the mid-season of the season 5 on Disney+, but I think that's saying more about where the series currently is than the movie itself. So let's focus on that!
Spoilers below the cut like WHOA.
Starting off with my in-movie notes, because I haven't felt the need to do that since watching The Winchesters, so why not?
Oh, they kept the voice actors. Thought they’d go with new ones
But they didn’t use Christina Vee for Marinette’s singing voice, which is very strange
Also, this song is lovely, but is not matching the movie. It’s a pop song, and I dig it, but it’s tonally wrong for the movie, which wants a full on Alan Menken with much brighter orchestrations. And Marinette’s voice is higher than this.
I like that Marinette is the one rejecting other people in this movie. This makes so much more sense for how she will suddenly become super popular once she’s Ladybug
CHLOE MY BELOVED BITCH WITH SOCIAL MEDIA AWARENESS. The Kardashians would deign to meet with you
Alya, you well meaning bitch you. This is why people struggle with you so hard
I really prefer the character designs for this movie. Not just the facial designs, but these actually look like kids with a healthy weight and proportions. (Series!Marinette's limbs freak me out)
I really like how the other kids act around Marinette. Aside from Chloe, the bullying really is all in her head – people are just looking at her, not judging. I like it.
Adrien studying at lunch! Another characterisation I like. And him running away when he’s confronted with people being a bit weird and him feeling like he’s on the verge of being awkward. Or at least that’s what I guess he was doing? They don't actually explain his actions here.
Oh, Garbiel’s beginning is nice. I like it.
“a nice screaming exchange like two civilised teenagers!” oh Chloe I adore you
Knowing what I know about the spoilers, this line “who saves a life saves the world” feels pointed, and could have been a great theme in the series
I love Tikki already
This 'You are Ladybug' song seems very nice, I love the beat, but again, Marinette’s singing voice is so distracting
Oh, goddammit Adrien.
GodDAMMIT Adrien.
Oh, boy, please, calm down. I love you but wow, boy… This is why I love you, even, but WOW
And watch as he immediately falls for the first girl to act like showing him attention isn’t a big deal
I love these kids so much. They’re so 14. Such brats.
See, Adrien’s singing voice actually fits him, despite still sounding like a pop song. Actually as a general rule, this song is just more suited to the movie and the moment, too. Maybe it's just Marinette's singing voice I'm struggling with
Did they change Plagg’s voice?
I prefer the change to Doosoo’s, though
Oh, Gabriel. I love you, you ham.
I also like that there are already supervillains in Paris, even though we don’t actually know about them.
THESE KIDS.
This Mime villain is actually genuinely menacing
I also like the way Tikki acts here. She’s more chaotic and doesn’t feel entirely ‘good’. In the sense of being a goody-two-shoes, I mean. She feels aggressive, violent. Much more like creation.
And Cat Noir’s powers being rougher and more physical, compared to Ladybug’s quick thinking and grace. There's balance in these characters, not just together but also in themselves.
I like Adrien’s arc as a superhero here. Main character syndrome immediately failed, he relegates himself to being a sidekick, and never realises he’s legitimately a hero in his own right because no one ever realises his stupidity is ALWAYS the result of poor mental health responses. Someone who is not a destructive spirit intervene in this boy's mental state!
Gabriel… is falling apart. I would have liked to have seen more of that.
Okay. Pause a second. Because I’ve reached the part of the movie where Ladybug rejects Cat Noir, Adrien rejects Marinette, and she’s singing about… something? I’m not quite following what the narrative intention of this song actually is, but it’s hitting an interesting point that I’m suddenly distracted by.
So something that’s always kind of been annoying to me in the series is that Marinette went from being the worst, most hopeless and unpopular girl in school to being its superstar just by being Ladybug. This movie actually does a really good job of showing that she was never that bad, she just didn’t believe in herself and sabotaged herself, and so when she stops sabotaging herself she excels. And I actually think it would have been super cool if there was an arc where she thought it was all about being ladybug, and became OVER confident because of it, and assumed that being Ladybug meant EVERYTHING should go her way. And so this set back—Adrien not just falling in love with her because she wants it that way—completely destroying her world view? Causing her a crisis of confidence? Making her fail as Ladybug, because she suddenly realises it’s not just luck and super powers, but her? That would have been a great plot. I would have liked that a lot. I’m not sure that’s what’s happening here, but I would’ve liked that a lot.
Yeah, this song is just skipping that plot and her going straight to starting to realise she’s enough.
Yesss Fallen!Gabriel, I enjoy this
Adrien, as always, your timing is terrible
…Hawkmoth, how are you doing any of this? How does it relate to your power set? Is this supposed to be what happens when you akumatise yourself?
I do like this resolution to the Gabriel villain story though. Including having Adrien actually being the solution to the problem, living out his role as the heart of the story to resolve the real problem, while Ladybug takes the spotlight as the ‘active’ hero.
CHLOE I LOVE YOU, YOU BITCH
Okay, so on a technical level, I love this movie's character designs, the animation is gorgeous, the direction is beautiful, the voice acting is (as always) amazing. With the exception of Marinette's singing voice, which was aggressively distracting, this movie is technically excellent.
And seems to have been delivered to schedule. Now that's the real shock.
Pacing wise, it was really good for a movie that was trying to encapsulate the scope of two heroes developing over like... what was supposed to be, six months? Very fast, maybe a little too fast, but not bad for its scope. But I do think that the only reason some of it worked is because we know these characters and could fill in the scenes. On his own, movie!Adrien wasn't developed beyond 'melodramatic BOY' (Nino did a LOT of heavy lifting for developing Adrien's character in like three lines), and movie!Marinette was pretty one-dimensional as 'underconfident'. But it was... fine. Ladybug and Cat Noir were a little better developed, and since they were the same people... meh.
Narratively, however.
I like Gabriel's story in this movie. I like him basically having a breakdown, and I like that it is only resolved when he is forced to see the damage he's done to his own son. I like that it's implied that Adrien's response is what actually saves him.
I also like how Ladybug and Cat Noir function together in this movie. They're stronger together, both literally and figuratively, and they have different functions that work, and the movie showcases it working. Ladybug is more visibly capable, but she's only able to be so BECAUSE Cat Noir is rushing around, taking the brunt of the chaos, distracting people, distracting HER from it all being too much. He can't do anything on his own, but neither can Ladybug, really. I really like how this movie ended that way, too - Cat Noir is unconscious, but still distracting the villain while Marinette sorts herself out. And once she has, she basically gets shunted off to the side, because the only way to solve this is with an emotional focus, and that's Adrien's job in their partnership. But AS FAR AS PARIS IS CONCERNED, Ladybug is still somehow the actual and only hero.
I suspect that after the series is over, I shall rant about the yin/yang and balance and what the series is trying to do, but for now...
Normally, I don't like movies that can't exist on their own. But in this particular case... I think I wouldn't enjoy this movie so much without the series to contrast against, and I think this movie showcases something really beautiful about the world of Miraculous. If it leads into a series of movies telling the Miraculous story...
Honestly, I wouldn't be mad.
Nice work, Mr Zag. It's good for what it is.

The urge to go finish Miraculous Ladybug is strong. But I don't know if I can put myself through that many hours of watching, just to get minimal plot. Like I want the identity reveals goddammit but I don't want to have to watch 8 or more hours of it to get there!
Siresly, why couldn't the writers have written the story progression better? It's too spread out. We have had the same villain for 5 seasons, and still no closer to defeating him

this is why we don’t do hot potato with people
So I haven’t been that active in the mlb fandom for a couple of years but I’m surprised to see how little I’ve seen in fic/comics the team basically doing hot potato with Marinette or just anyone...so I’m gonna show why that is. Changes to canon
“I’m telling you, just leave me somewhere safe!”
“And risk the akuma finding you? I’m sorry Princess but your too purr-ecious to risk.” goddammit if she wasn’t worried about her identity she’d purposely fall out of his arms.
“Chat on your left! Switch!” oh shit
“Waitwaitwait--!” he throws her. He throws her! And doesn’t even look where he’s throwing! Instead he’s looking to his left ready for...nothing?
“Made you look.” Alya?? She thought she was better than this!
“Hey that’s cheating!”
“You were being a Mari-hog dude!” et tu Nino? Well at least it’s a much smaller toss.
“I don’t know what Carapace means by “Mari-hog” but you, Chat Noir, have had Marinette the longest and it was time for a switch.” Kagami too?? Even if its Kagami that’s no excuse for dropping her 2 stories down into someone’s arms!
And now it’s time for another switch!” Flying. Great. Thanks Chloe. Maybe she should consider benching everyone for the rest of the month.
“Guys? I think Marinette is uncomfortable with all the moving around.” She also considers giving Luka Sass more often. Finally she’s stopped moving and was passed in a very considerably way...actually maybe that was just Luka not wanting her to throw up on him.
“Will you please... just hide me somewhere.” and finally they do when seeing the very sick shade of green on her face. Strange how when in the passenger seat she’s more prone to motion sickness. Although to be fair she isn’t thrown, snatched, swiped, or dropped as often as Ladybug...okay but she doesn’t have to worry about falling to death as Ladybug.
After the purification of the akuma there was a very sudden announcement/lecture about the do’s and dont’s when escorting a civilian to safety. With the biggest one being, don’t treat it like hot potato

Day 26 sees the end of When a Bat Falls in Love with a Bug (for now). Prompt today is Get Up
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
@maribatserver
Marinette and Barbara had been dating for three months now and Barbara was happy. Happier than she had been for a long time actually, and if it weren't for the horrible phantom pains that kept ruining her mornings she would say that things couldn't possibly be better.
It was going so well, in fact, that she had told her dad she was seeing someone and wanted to introduce them. He had been excited but concerned, saying that he would absolutely be meeting them as soon as possible, was she free to come over for dinner that night?
“Dad, isn't that a little soon? I really don't need you scaring her off, she's really sweet,” Barbara said, exasperated. “And it would be tons easier if you would come here, you know?”
“Fine,” Jim said agreeably. “What time should I be there? And do you want me to bring anything since it's such short notice?”
“No dad, we'll be fine,” she sighed, resigning herself to it happening that night. “Could you get here for 7?”
As soon as she was off the phone she messaged Marinette, inviting her to the meal. She made sure to say that if she was busy she didn't have to but Marinette replied immediately saying she couldn't wait.
Marinette showed up a little after 5pm, arms laden with bags and boxes and a bright smile on her face. She babbled away as she headed to the kitchen, saying that she had everything she needed to make one of her family recipes. They'd spent enough time together that Barbara could see the nerves hiding behind the cheerful chatter.
“He's going to love you,” Barbara said, unpacking the bags alongside Marinette and pulling down her pull-out counter so she could assist. “Honestly, he just wants to make sure I'm happy and that should be obvious enough when he sees us together. You didn't have to go through all this trouble.”
“I want to,” was all Marinette said, her voice firm.
By the time her dad arrived - twenty minutes early - the apartment was filled with the smell of spices and had a warm, cosy feeling that it always did when Marinette cooked. Jim managed to remember to knock instead of just letting himself in with the key as he usually would when it was just Barbara, which was nice.
“Something smells wonderful,” he said in lieu of a greeting, breathing deeply. He was sizing up Marinette from where he was standing, her back still turned as she added the finishing touches to the meal and started the rice.
“It's a pleasure to finally meet you,” Marinette said when she turned around, coming to give him une bise. “Sorry food isn't ready yet, can I get you a drink?”
“No, that's fine, I can wait until dinner,” Jim replied, a smile making his moustache twitch. That was the point Barbara knew that Marinette had won him over, just like she did with everyone she met.
Dinner was filled with laughter and there were no awkward pauses that Barbara had to fill which was amazing. By the end, Marinette had been invited to their annual thanksgiving plans and Barbara was even more enamoured with her girlfriend.
_ _ _
“Goddammit!”
Marinette startled awake from where she was lying next to Barbara and sat up so quickly her head span for a moment. She glanced at her girlfriend, concerned and rested a hand on her shoulder to try and comfort her.
“Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you, I just- jesus!” Barbara swore, sitting up as well and rubbing her legs. She had tears in her eyes but Marinette couldn't tell if it was from pain or frustration. Barbara had been open about the phantom pains that had been plaguing her ever since Joker had shot her but had admitted that it had been getting worse in recent months.
“Don't apologise for that, what can I do to help?” Marinette asked, trying not to let her worry bleed into her voice too much. She knew she didn't manage fully, but stayed close to Barbara as she tried to even out her breathing.
Later in the day, when she seemed back to usual, Marinette broached the topic again.
“Babe, I really think you should talk to your doctor, or physiotherapist, about these phantom pains. I really don't think they're supposed to be getting worse over time,” she implored. “Please, for my peace of mind?”
So Barbara called and arranged an impromptu appointment to discuss the phantom pains. Marinette could tell she was resigned to the pain and was merely humouring her but got her to promise to call her when she was done.
It wasn't until she was back in her apartment, spiraling while she waited for Adrien to get back from work that Tikki spoke up.
“It could be the effect of long-term exposure to the Ladybug Miraculous,” Tikki said with a shrug. When Marinette stared at the Kwami in confusion she elaborated. “She wasn't born without the use of her legs, she was shot, right? Well, her exposure to the miraculous might be creating the pathways that were destroyed. It's taking longer than if she was wearing it herself but-”
“Wait, so…she's healing? Like, she's going to be able to walk again?” Marinette stared at the pocket sized god in amazement. Her mind was racing and she wanted to scream with excitement. She knew she healed at an accelerated rate but she hadn't realised it would be able to heal such a severe injury for someone else. “But…all of her doctors have said there was no way…”
“Well, it would hardly be a Miraculous if it was ordinary,” Tikki retorted drily. But Marinette was lost in thought and hardly acknowledged the statement as she started to panic about what she would say to Barbara when she saw her again.
_ _ _
Lying on an examination table, Barbara started to feel even more nervous about the serious look on the doctor's face. When she had described the frequency and intensity the doctor had said, far too casually, that she would like to ‘check some things out’. And that alarmed Barbara enough that she wished Marinette was there to calm her down.
“Okay, so I want you to let me know if the pain gets worse at any point during this. But for now, lay back and close your eyes, please.”
With her eyes closed, Barbara relied on the sounds to work out what was happening but tried to focus solely on the sensations in her legs and lower back as the doctor did her checks.
“Okay, well I don't think it's anything to be worried about necessarily,” she said at last, though her tone set Barbara's teeth on edge. “But I would like to send you for a couple of x-rays to get a look at what's going on in there.”
Barbara was well past mild panic at this point and nodded even as she grabbed her phone and messaged Marinette to let her know. She asked if Marinette minded coming to be with her at the hospital while they ran tests and was relieved when she got an immediate positive response.
Once Marinette was there Barbara tried to relax but there was something…off with her. Her blue eyes seemed overly bright, just on the manic side, and she was chattering without pause. It reminded Barbara of their first few meetings before they'd gone on a date and that's what made her realise it was something like nervous anticipation. Like she had hopes for how things would go but was afraid at the same time.
It took several hours before they were pulled into a private room for a consultation. The doctor looked nervous as well, hands fidgeting and a smile trying to break over his face. Barbara was so busy trying to work out what could possibly be going on that she missed what he said the first time.
She didn't miss the soft exhale that came out of Marinette and the happy tears she saw when she glanced at her. She blinked and turned to ask for the doctor to say it again.
“Of course, I'm sure this is a shock,” he said gently, but he didn't have a ‘bad news’ face on. It seemed more like excitement and Barbara felt a hard lump move into her throat. “I know you were told that the possibility of your spine reconnecting its nerves was zero and I don't know how to explain it. It's a medical miracle, really, but they're more common than you would think. But it looks like the pains you've been experiencing are good and indicate that with more physiotherapy…”
“Babs, hun, he's saying you might walk again,” Marinette said softly, happy tears spilling over.

Miraculous Ladybug spoilers incoming
Lol, don’t say I didn’t warn you, m’kay?
***
I have to make it clear that I dropped Miraculous on season 2, mostly because the structure of the show wasn’t being my thing anymore and also because things didn’t felt like they were progressing most of the time. However, I still receive/look for spoilers because of hope I guess (and maybe Stockholm syndrome), so the following thoughts are all based on the snippets of spoilers I received. Maybe the episode explains things (or maybe it doesn’t)
I have to ask- why give the cat miraculous to Zoe? I completely understand giving the ladybug miraculous to Alya (hell, she’s probably the best choice), but why Zoe?
Yeah, she has used one of miraculous before (as did most characters of this show at this point) but I don’t think she demonstrated having the capacity to handle something like this. Also, and most importantly, they barely know her! She has been around for like half a season I think, and while she has had a few ( and I say few) interactions with Marinette before (and by extension Tikki), I don’t think the same happened between her and Adrien/Plagg, so he had no reason to choose her.
I’m s bit upset Nino wasn’t chosen but I also understand that it’s likely because he and Alya have a thing, and that was likely going to bring the same problems as before. But again, why Zoe? Why not any of the other classmates? Most of them are more friends of Marinette than of Adrien, but they are also people that have been around for much longer.
Rose could have been an interesting option, since she’s kinda the opposite of destruction and shit. And her attitude is similar to that of Chat in some moments.
Kagami was also an option, as she is a close friend of Adrien and also has many parallels with him ( you know, rigid and toxic family, difficulties expressing themselves, stric schedule that doesn’t leave much from for what they like). Receiving the miraculous could giver the chance to grow in a similar way to blondie’s, and she also has been missing from this season a bit from what I gathered.
Now that I think about it- it 100% should have been her. 1000%. Mayyybe Luka because he’s the most emotionally stable of the bunch and also because he’s missing, but it should have been Kagami specially.
God dammit Thomas, why do you make such bad decisions?
