Sitting just a few tables away, Max’s piercing blue eyes locked on him. There was something idle but deliberate in the way Max watched him, like he wasn’t just looking at Charles, but seeing him. 

Assessing him. Studying him.

The weight of Max’s gaze sent a shock through Charles, almost causing him to spit out the mouthful of his drink onto the gentleman next to him. He coughed, barely managing to save face, but the flush of heat that crept up his neck was unmistakable. His collar was suddenly too tight over his thick neck, and his tie felt like it was strangling him.

Max, the bastard, didn’t even flinch. He just smiled, the corner of his lips quirking up in that maddeningly confident way that made Charles feel like he was being toyed with—like Max already knew the answer to a question Charles hadn’t even asked himself yet.

Quickly, in one smooth movement, Charles sinks to his knees.

It’s almost worth it just for the face Max makes. It’s an open-mouthed look of disbelief that gives Charles a little more confidence.

“What –” Max says, faltering

Charles can't handle being second. He finds a way to relieve the tension.

Mouth opening and closing several times with no further words coming out, Max's voice wavered with the evident weight of everything he couldn't say. The emotions were too raw, too powerful to be expressed in mere words alone.

Opting instead to rest his forehead against Charles’, Max held their mouths a breath apart with his eyes closed. The proximity was intoxicating, and Charles begged mentally for Max to kiss him. He needed to feel the prince's lips one last time as a physical reminder that what they had was real, that this wasn't a dream he would wake up from alone.

Instead of moving closer like the Earthling thought he would, Max craned his head back and looked deeply into his eyes. The prince stared at him so intensely, eyes darting across his face like he was trying to memorize every line and curve, like he wanted to burn the image of him into his brain.

The intensity of Max’s gaze sent sparks of fire down to Charles’ tail spot, making him feel both cherished and heartbroken at the same time.
