the jaguar is no doubt the fiercest big cat out there

tigers and lions may be bigger, but their bite force is significantly weaker than that of a jaguar

and the jaguar also bites through the skull rather than the throat, which is hardcore af

if the lion is king of the jungle, the jaguar is the god of the jungle

just like mammon, the mountain lion is all meow and no bite

they're actually big cowards and would rather run away

will only fight if they get pressured and none of the bluffing managed to scare you off

known to be one of the cuddliest cats in captivity and, differently from big cats like lions and tigers, they can still purr like a cat

cheetahs actually have crippling anxiety and often need emotional support dogs when in captivity

only built for speed and nothing else, they heavily lack in all other areas, which makes existing rather difficult for them

they often get their meals stolen from lions, leopards and hyenas, similar to how Levi feels like his brothers are stealing you from him lmao

not the biggest, not the strongest, but god damn do they get a lot of pressure from competition

leopards literally have to pull their meals up a tree just to get it to themselves

to make the above fact more crazy, the food they put in trees are usually bigger than they are

hyenas and lions often bully the smaller feline, which would probably leave them with a lot of pent up aggression towards them (similar to how satan feels about lucifer)

the only difference between leopards and cheetahs regarding that pressure is that cheetahs basically give up right away while leopards might put up more of a fight

leopards also seem to be rather hissy in captivity

Weretober 2023 - Part 2: Lives of the Werebeasts of Urvara

And now, to cap off Weretober 2023, the final batch exploring the lives of Werefolk in my setting of Beast Fables. From assassins to soldiers to ronin to nasty diseases, there are many sides to being a werebeast in Urvara!

A famous Were-Tarantula Hawk assassin readies for combat against a berserker were-shrew.

A were-sea lion stumbles upon a rare find: a black pearl! Surely this will give her clan honor! Unbenkowest to her however, she is being watched by a couple of merfolk. The Mer-tiger shark wants to "deal" with her, to keep their society a secret, but the Mer-octopus urges caution instead.

For most people, a person's animal form is either from one parent or the other. In much rare cases however, one could get an animal form that's a hybrid of their parents's beast form! Walter Raja Surrey here is a Liger, and has all of the hybrid's advantages, without the myriad of health problems associated with them!

A member of the last group of Were-Diprotodons shows an archeology student and an art history student an example of a hunting boomerang, otherwise known as a karli. Alongside being both a great example of art and a useful tool, it's big enough to double as a club.

A werefox succumbs to that most feared of diseases among were-mammal kind, rabies. Certain were-folk, like werebirds can fight off the disease, while others like were-crocodilians seem to be immune to almost anything.

A were-rhinoceros beetle gets treated for cordyceps. While not the lethal, muscle and nervous system hijacker of their wild counterparts, it still hurts, and requires immediate attention, lest it begins to interfere with the magics governing transformation as well as tissue damage.

A traveling group of were-elephantines, including a mammoth. While giants to a regular person, they themselves are dwarfed by the creator of the roads they travel upon, called the Titan Roads. These roads were built by Were-sauropods.

A turbulent priest preaches the cause for justice, and the betterment of society as a whole. A priest of the Ten Faced God, he dons the silver and black to denote his devotion to the face of Justice.

A were-raccoon dog ronin thought his speed and agility would win the day against the lumbering were-eremotherium, who himself is in service of a large empire known as Tartessos (basically Not!Spain). The risk the ronin took was calculated, but BOY was he BAD at math!

And finally, the classic Werewolf. A Durroyan werewolf charges with a bayonet, steely determination in his eyes and faith that discipline will win the battle through. A Gevaudanois werewolf counter charges with tooth, claw and sabre in hand, confident that courage and ferocity will win the day.

Narnia Headcanons: Talking Animals

- Talking Elephants are nearly extinct by the time the Pevensies arrive and are extinct by the time of King Tirian. Most of this is due to the hundred year winter and hunting by Calormens and Telmarens.

- Talking Mice only came into being after the mice chewed through the ropes at the Stone Table and all Narnian mice can talk.

- Apes live in a small jungle in Calormen and have always had smaller numbers than other talking beasts. They banished Shift for being a menace.

- Hybrid talking animals (Ligers for example) are rare but do happen.

- some Octopi and Squid speak but no one knows exactly how many of them are able to as they are very secretive and solitary, much like their non-talking counterparts.

- Talking bats do exist and are quite cheerful and friendly.

- There are four types of bats that live in Narnia, one of which is Vampire Bats. They only feed on animals that don't talk.

- the most common type of talking Beasts are Birds and the least common is Frogs.

- Talking Frogs do exist but for some reason many of them became Dumb Beasts after hibernating through the 100 year winter, which also happened with quite a few bears.

- There are Skunks in Archenland and some of them can speak.

- Arctic Foxes moved to Archenland after the witch was defeated. They aren't exactly evil but they love making new problems for people.

- Most canine Beasts have very dog like traits and also sometimes revert to canine behaviors when stressed or upset.

Okay, I'm gonna try to stump you with this one:

What can you tell me about cat breeding and dog breeding?

There are different so-called "breeds" of dogs and cats, but they are all still distinctly dogs and cats. There are no ligers or mules among them where the genetics come to a halt (at least that's my understanding).

How does that whole thing work? And how did breeders manage to make breeds to be hypoallergenic (poodles), or hunt badgers (corgis), or racers (greyhounds), or hunt wolves (borzhois), or good swimmers (poodles again), or guard dogs (a bunch)?

I know significantly less about breeds of cats. Siamese are those skinny ones, persians have flat faces, and I forget the name that still has tiger stripes. My knowledge stops there.

Chromosomes.

Breeders bred dogs that held favorable traits, if a dog was larger he would breed it with another larger dog, same for if it was smaller, a breed is represented by a sufficient number of individuals that stably transfer specific characteristics over generations.

Dogs of the same breed have similar characteristics of appearance and behavior, primarily because they come from a select set of ancestors who had the same characteristics.

While it is true that all dogs are dogs, the breeds can be seen in the same light as human adaptation, people have evolved to suit a wide variety of climates and adapted different behaviors and appearances due to this, dog breeds are artificially induced adaptation, known to the layman as selective breeding, or to those of us who understand it, the only acceptable form of eugenics.

This is why despite dogs all being dogs, a terrier is different to a mastiff, they were bred for different jobs and thus have different morphologies and behaviors, terriers are typically ratting dogs who live on farms to chase out vermin, such as rats, mice, badgers etc, while mastiffs are guard and fighting dogs.

Modern breeds are primarily bred for looks, while the old working breeds still exist, many have lost their purposes, for instance many don't know this but Poodles weren't bred to be show dogs, they were also working dogs, they were bred to be water retrievers who swam out to fetch water fowl.

I mention poodles because they are the reason hypoallergenic dog breeds exist, they have hair instead of fur, this helped poodles not retain water and sink like a brick while swimming, this trait was then bred into other dogs by breeding with poodles which helped to prevent dander and shedding that led to allergies.

Something that you have to acknowledge is that we have been selectively breeding dogs for as long as we've known them, from killing off those who bit the hand of their master to choosing who they can breed with based on how they performed and behaved.

So, for more than 30'000 years we have been shaping dogs to fill roles given to them, hunting game, retrieving game, protecting crops and livestock, protecting settlements, war, pest control etc etc, as much as they are man's best friend they are also one of man's best tools.

what’s a bengal tiger? 😅

Sooooo, I got a little bit out of control with this answer, because I love tigers so much, so I talked about all the tigers, whoops also if you want pictures I’ll gladly add them, just let me know ☺️

Bengal Tigers are sometimes known as Royal Indian Tiger or just Indian Tiger. They’re part of the subspecies of Tigers in the world. There’s many different types of tigers, some look very very similar but they’re named after where they’re mainly found the different types of tigers and I’ve also added how to tell the difference between them. They’re gorgeous creatures and I’m very passionate about their growing population and the rights to protect them. Because of their home being destroyed it’s known that some tigers come out and kill humans to survive resulting in them being poached. It’s truly sad, my zoo has two tigers are they’re part of a big effort to grow the tiger population back to where it used to be, I cry every time I see them because they’re just so gorgeous

• Bengal Tigers native to the Indian subcontinent. Although it once roamed a much larger area, the Bengal is currently found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.The Bengal tiger is on the endangered list. It’s the most well-known breed of tiger and the largest tiger found in the wild. A male Bengal weighs between 397 and 569 pounds. The female is smaller, weighing between 220 and 350 pounds.

• White Tigers a genetic mutation more commonly found in captivity as they’d be easily hunted because they have no camouflage

• Siberian Tigers also known as the Manchurian tiger, Korean tiger, Amur tiger or Ussurian tiger, is an endangered species that lives in Northern Asia (China, Russia and Korea It’s said that even though the Bengal Tiger is the world’s largest tigers weighing up to almost 600 pounds. Crossbreeds such as the liger, a mix between a female tiger and a male lion, get much larger than their parents, however. A full-grown male liger can weigh as much as 1600 pounds! That’s three times the size of a Bengal or Siberian tiger. When Bengals and Siberians are crossbred, they also become larger than their parents.

• Sumatran Tigers are the smallest of the subspecies because it only lives on the Island Sumatran off the coast of Indonesia and are separate from their “mainland” cousins. The stripes of the Sumatran are very dark and well-defined. They cover the tiger’s entire body, including its forelegs. Not all tigers have stripes on their front legs.

• The Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti), also known as Corbett’s tiger, is named in honor of the famous British hunter Jim Corbett who was often enlisted to hunt down man-eating tigers and leopards early in the 20th century. The near critically endangered Indochinese tiger is native to Southeast Asia (China, Thailand, Laos, Burma and Vietnam). The illegal trade of tiger parts which are in high demand is the main reason for a quickly dwindling Indochinese tiger population. There are only around 300-400 Indochinese tigers left in the world today. Tiger parts are used in rituals, for meat (internal organs), and to make jewelry, medicines, clothes and wines. Very little of the tiger remains unused. The Indochinese tiger has narrow, single stripes.

• The Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni and occasionally Panthera tigris malayensis) is also known as the Southern Indochinese tiger. Its native range is Southeastern Asia (Burma, Thailand and Malaysia).The Malayan Tiger is very similar in appearance to the Indochinese tiger except that it’s slightly smaller. It wasn’t even considered a unique breed separate from the Indochinese tiger until the early 2000s. Malayan tiger numbers are shockingly low. There are less than 200 breeding adults in the world, and their numbers are still declining! The Malayan tiger has become critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Like the Indochinese tiger, Malayan tiger parts are used in a variety of ways from cultural rituals to traditional medicines.

• The South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) is also known as the Chinese tiger, the Xiamen tiger and the Amoy tiger. It’s native to eastern and central China (the Jiangxi, Guangdong, Fukien and Hunan provinces); however, one has not been spotted in the wild for decades. The South China tiger is critically endangered and facing possible extinction. Only 30 to 40 are known to exist in the world, and all are living in captivity. When the Chinese government was clearing land for development, they had all tigers killed that were displaced. Habitat destruction and eradication measures led to the decimation of the South China tigers in the wild. Regretting their actions, the Chinese government now works to protect the South China tiger. Currently, zoos in China and South Africa have breeding programs working hard to increase their numbers.

It makes me horribly sad and upset to know that people and governments aren’t protecting a vital part of their ecosystems. If I wasn’t in nursing school I’d become a wildlife conservationists because I’m so passionate about it, honestly Steve Irwin is what got me so passionate about animals and I try to do everything I can for these gorgeous creatures. Do the Sentos have any creatures that can be called a pet or is everything that’s not a floraman considered food?

The planet is has extreme dual hot and cold conditions so not many species outside of Ligers, Swiepers, Floramen, plant-life, and maybe smaller rodents live among Sentos.

They'd mainly hunt Ligers for bulk meat for meals and use their teeth for accessories or other mundane trinkets. They'll also eat the the fruits and nuts from the plant-life.

In Chima, each species of animal forms its unique tribe, therefore ravens will form the Raven Tribe as an example. The tribes don't mix up (unless they form a strict alliance like the Ice Hunters), as each tribe is essentially made out of one species each. No animal there forms one species as a whole, because they all came from different ancestors, and thus are not compatible with one another, even if Chi brought these animal species closer with similarities such as sapience.

I don't know if I explained it correctly. A quick summary:

Eagle Tribe -> Eagle Legend Beast as common ancestor; Raven Tribe -> Raven Legend beast as common ancestor; Eagle Tribe ≠ Raven Tribe, Eagle LB ≠ Raven LB.

Though this is a tricky example because Chi gave them a similar number of chromosomes, and they can hybridize, but the offspring will suffer heavily due to hybridization (organ failure, neurological issues, etc, just like what happens with ligers).

Lion Tribe -> Lion LB as a common ancestor; Crocodile Tribe -> Crocodile LB as common ancestor; they are two different species.

Furthermore, each tribe has its own unique culture, formed around the biome it's in, characteristics of the species (such as diet, hunting style, social interactions between members), ecological niche, etc.

Therefore, to judge a species— and thus judge an entire tribe— in Chima would be the zoological equivalent of ethnocentrism in our society. Actually, people already judge entire species of animals (sharks, pigeons, bats, dogs are strong examples)!

This kind of discrimination is tackled in LoC's third season, with the war between the Phoenix Tribe and the Ice Hunters being an allegory of colonization.

How can you like black wolves so much and not like William Butcher?

He's a feral kitten but kind of like a lone wolf with a feral kitten's face. His eyes are just so big I can't get over it. And then he actually honest to god has that buttony cat nose? Anyway. He... honestly could never be an Alpha because he doesn't give enough fucks about the pack to do the job right, so that would more likely be Mother's Milk.

But the point still stands and cats are way better.

Wolves are basically honorary cats that didn't make the cut because they're not as pretty or big or epic or strong or efficiently evolved... Seriously, big cats are winning the evolution game hella hard and have been for a long time in terms of apex predators. You wanna talk athletic freaks of nature? Cats will go for every fucking prize they can.

Tigers are crazy cool and strong stealth hunters that have been known to take down huge bears. Wolves would not dare make the attempt without extremely desperate situations because they know who's likely to end up on the menu. They're smart enough to back down when the situation calls for it. And the Alphas are just the parents so of course they care for their pups. And then Jaguars developing a taste for dog?

They make the whole canis genus look like they suck ass by comparison. Seriously. Even the common house cat is responsible for so... so many extinctions. They are the most detrimental and invasive species... but they're so beautiful that humans just don't give a fuck and continue to let them do whatever the fuck they want and kill off entire ecosystems. For fun. Because common house cats hunt for fucking fun.

And they will murder you in your sleep and eat the cadaver should they see fit.

You don't own the cat, the cat owns you. And they are the only animal to successfully domesticate the human.

Niche Under the Magnifying Glass Lamp

If there is one thing I can take away from being in some smaller fandoms, or niche hobbies: You take what you can get and There are people out there who need their medical bills paid for carrying the fandom on their backs.

My two babies are the Lego Monkie Kid:

If you loved Lego Ninjago as a kid and still do to this day, I highly recommend this show. You can find the first couple of seasons on Amazon Prime. Seasons 3 and 4 are gonna be a bit more difficult, and this is what I mean by some needing their medical bills paid. Because the only reason I was able to keep up with the show with it being poorly marketed and dubbing is slow, folks came together to not only find the episodes, but also do their damnedest to fan sub these. I've already written a post about this show and why you need to watch it somewhere on this blog. Anyways, my next baby, and the one I have sunk so much money into already, is Zoids:

Most would be familiar with Chaotic Century or New Century Zero, as the Liger Zero (not depicted here) is the poster boy of the franchise. And with the 40th anniversary upon us, I'm glad I get to experience this niche franchise/hobby in general (My wallet not so much). I say that as I have a few kits that are sadly yet to be built. Right, Zoids if you don't know, started out as a sort of model kit toy line-up with a whole story between two warring factions and the mechanical beings known as Zoids. Most of it takes place on Planet Zi, with the exception being Zoids Wild Zero (and I swear to the gods above, I have been trying to watch this series for years now but finding episodes has been extremely tricky. That or I have just been extremely unlucky.)

Anyways, all that aside, insert here how even small fandoms have their problems and blah blah blah. But in general, I found the hardest part of being in smaller communities is mainly finding the content for them. Again, Zoids just isn't a big thing here in the States, so finding kits can be a little hit or miss. I say this as someone who fell into the pit trap of knockoffs (three to be exact.) and yeah, still new to all of this, only started building the kits recently. And as for Lego Monkie Kid, thankfully the internet exists, and the dedicated fans who work their asses off to find episodes and get them translated? Hats off to you my friends and thank you for all you do. It's always so exciting when you find someone out in the wild, so to speak, who knows about some of these smaller properties. And again, just being in these smaller fandoms, you have a slightly different perspective on Things you wouldn't think about being in bigger fandoms. I never thought I would be building model kits because of my horrible coordination and the fact that a disability I have makes it a little difficult to handle the tiny pieces. But then I discovered Zoids: New Century Zero on youtube some odd years ago and then learned about the model kits. Liger Zero was the first kit I got. Sadly him and my knockoff Mugen Liger took a tumble and are now in Model kit hospital trying to fix the broken parts. And even now, I still hunt for new kits, droll over some I could never hope to own. And I've rewatched Zoids Genesis at least 4 or 5 times now. And before anyone says anything, Yes I have seen Chaotic Century, and I do love it, don't get me wrong. But my favorite Zoid happens to be the Murasame Liger and its evolts. So you can imagine why I would watch Genesis a few more times than the others. And then there's Lego Monkie Kid. See, I loved Lego Ninjago as a kid, always diving into each episode and recording them on the VCR to see anything I missed. And then one day, scrolling through TikTok, I came across some clips of this new Lego animation that was essentially a sequel (I'm not calling it a fanfiction, I swear to the gods I refuse) Of Journey to the West. Which I learned about through Overly Sarcastic Productions. And doing my usual thing, now that I know how to surf the um . . . Okay let's be real here, pirating sites for cartoons and then Amazon Prime for this show. It was so easy to catch up on and the animation was eye candy, the characters and story were amazing, sound design and all.

Anyways, if you made it this far into my rambles, I applaud you and hope I convinced you to go searching around the deeper waters a bit. After all, you never know what you're going to find. Whether it be a gold mine, okay but still a guilty pleasure, the downright bad, or just the strange of the strange. Either way, happy exploring and I'll see you on the other side.
