An absolute classic for a reason, we’re talking about BEAUTY AND THE BEAST today — about the trope itself, about how the 1991 Disney movie brought it back to life (yes, we see you, Dain), and about why we love the vibe of scarred and broken men in a castle being found and renovated by whip smart, bookish heroines. Spoiler: It’s patriarchy.

LORD OF SCOUNDRELS by Loretta Chase
“I will teach you a lesson you’ll never forget.”
She tangled her fingers in his hair and brought his mouth to hers. “My wicked darling,” she whispered. “I should like to see you try.”

I am tired and cranky and so rereading one of my ultimate comfort rereads - Loretta Chase’s Lord of Scoundrels.
LC is a well-known romance author but most of her books is not my bag. But boy oh boy do I adore Lord of Scoundrels.
Seemingly a novel about a proper miss marrying a terrifying monster of an aristocrat, this is not in the least the novel about a put upon woman or beauty conquering the beast or anything like that at all at all but an extremely pragmatic common sense young woman realizing that she is being ineptly courted by a terribly vulnerable believes he can’t be loved immature drama queen who she falls in love with pretty much the moment she meets him. There is character growth that is gradual and believable and just the whole thing is AMAZING!!!

“The public tormented Lord Byron for his scandalous ways, and I’ve done far worse than him!”
You’ve gambled and slept with sex workers, Lord Dain, calm the hell down.

September 2022 Reading Recap
New on the blog - my September reading recap!
September was an interesting month. It was also the month I finally got COVID (I’m better now) which was definitely a low, but I got quite a bit of reading in! This month I managed to read 8 books, so not bad, all things considered. I’m also on a major 90s historical romance kick which you’ll see reflected in the books I read this month. Here’s what I read this month: (more…)

Is the Scoundrel not afraid of Fingerking possession?
okay see that's the thing. to be afraid would require that they actively think about it as a thing that could potentially happen to them in the first place. and the thing is that they, uh, well,
they don't.

The Trailblazers conversations continue this week 👆 with the brilliantly talented Loretta Chase, who we adore, and not only because she wrote one of our favorite romances of all time. We obviously talk about Lord of Scoundrels 👇 and Jessica and Dain, but we also talk about writing, about the challenges of writer’s block, about the glorious rabbit holes of research, and yes…we ask hard hitting questions about The Mummy.

I may not be the best person to make this point, but even though it’s a very minor thing in Lord of Scoundrels, it's something I’ve seen elsewhere: if bad guys are mean to a protagonist because they believe them to be mixed-race, okay, they’re bad guys- but then it’s kind of cowardly for the protagonist to really just be part Italian.
