I keep seeing posts that say my abuser in my source was just a kid. Sure, he was just a kid, but he still abused me didn’t he?

He still pulled my hair and threatened to hit me. He still screamed at me. He still degraded me in front of people. He still constantly made me have sex with him. He still—in an open, unlablled relationship—screamed at me and freaked out when I kissed someone else… In an open relationship, where he said he didn’t care and it’d be alright and nothing more or less if I liked someone elses body. He still treated me like a sexual being. He still manipulated me. He still abused others.

Yes, he went through things no one—let alone a 19 year old (when he died, at least) shpuld go through. Yes, he’s traumatised, but he was abusive. To me. To Maya. To everyone.

To go more into detail—people keep excusing his abuse as him being traumatised/young. Or just borderline ignoring everything. (“Rowan they could never make me hate you”/“Rowan’s story makes me so sad”/“Rowan didn’t mean to hurt Louis”)

And one time, someone made a post saying that my husband, who is the kindest man ever who genuinely made me believe in love again, was a bad person because he “stole me” from my abuser. Because I was the only thing that made him happy.

Hello, my name is Astarion Ancunin. I am a introject from the game Baldurs Gate 3. I am very close to my source but there are some differences. For instance I am just as sparky and occasionally downright rude, but I am healed from the trauma that my source is dealing with. I am NOT the ascended version of my source and never will be nor have any interest in being such.

Me and the Host believe I am a combination of a hyperfixation split and an emotional regulation split. As far as I am concerned, they are my Darling and I will do anything to protect them. I don't know what I would call what I feel for them, I am still rather new to this. I care for them deeply and I doubt they even realize. They have been romantically alone for a while now and so desperately craving that connection to the point of depression whilst also being entirely aware that they aren't quite ready for a relationship yet (and even then struggling to find one.) I am happy to have joined them.

I enjoy a variety of music so far, not limited to Sleep Token, Hozier, and Panic! At The Disco. I enjoy seeing myself in media and discussing my source, I also enjoy seeing other vampires in media such as Lestat (Tom cruise and Sam reid) and Louis (both actors who's names I can't remember), and I enjoy talking with others in general. I am a tad shy as I've never even really fronted yet, but am happy so discuss my interests. The attack on complex/imaged/non-utilitarian prose seems to be a very long running arc. I remember reading an article (which I of course now cannot find) about how the idea of "killing your darlings" could be traced all the way back —by way of an orientalist mutation— to a 17th century preacher comparing the stylistic qualities of the Greek of Homeric poetry with that of the Bible, and concluding, that, altho the Greek of Homer was richer, more elegant, more vivid, more imaginative and more syntactically inventive than that of the Bible, the latter was the better style because the content was truer.

There is the now widely quoted claim that the CIA had a strong hand in shaping America's writer workshops during the Cold War, encouraging writers to adopt a terse, simple, clear and apolitical prose, as a counter to the complex stream-of-consciousness style which was associated with socialist leanings (Louis-Ferdinand Céline nonewithstanding).

There is the ongoing introjection of writing advices originally meant for screenwriters into the craft of novelists (from "show don't tell" to "start in the middle of the action" by means of "there's no story without conflict").

There is the perenial denunciation of the passive voice as an occult tool of heretical pride —always by people who cannot give a clear grammatical explanation of what the passive voice is or what it does, and cannot reliably identity it in a text.

It's like nothing short of the extremely paratactic style of Norse sagas will ever be considered terse and sober enough to escape the qualification of purple prose.

This is a dangerous sentiment for me to express, as an editor who spends most of my working life telling writers to knock it off with the 45-word sentences and the adverbs and tortured metaphors, but I do think we're living through a period of weird pragmatic puritanism in mainstream literary taste.

e.g. I keep seeing people talk about 'purple prose' when they actually mean 'the writer uses vivid and/or metaphorical descriptive language'. I've seen people who present themselves as educators offer some of the best genre writing in western canon as examples of 'purple prose' because it engages strategically in prose-poetry to evoke mood and I guess that's sheer decadence when you could instead say "it was dark and scary outside". But that's not what purple prose means. Purple means the construction of the prose itself gets in the way of conveying meaning. mid-00s horse RPers know what I'm talking about. Cerulean orbs flash'd fire as they turn'd 'pon rollforth land, yonder horizonways. <= if I had to read this when I was 12, you don't get to call Ray Bradbury's prose 'purple'.

I griped on here recently about the prepossession with fictional characters in fictional narratives behaving 'rationally' and 'realistically' as if the sole purpose of a made-up story is to convince you it could have happened. No wonder the epistolary form is having a tumblr renaissance. One million billion arguments and thought experiments about The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas that almost all evade the point of the story: that you can't wriggle out of it. The narrator is telling you how it was, is and will be, and you must confront the dissonances it evokes and digest your discomfort. 'Realistic' begins on the author's terms, that's what gives them the power to reach into your brain and fiddle about until sparks happen. You kind of have to trust the process a little bit.

This ultra-orthodox attitude to writing shares a lot of common ground with the tight, tight commodification of art in online spaces. And I mean commodification in the truest sense - the reconstruction of the thing to maximise its capacity to interface with markets. Form and function are overwhelmingly privileged over cloudy ideas like meaning, intent and possibility, because you can apply a sliding value scale to the material aspects of a work. But you can't charge extra for 'more challenging conceptual response to the milieu' in a commission drive. So that shit becomes vestigial. It isn't valued, it isn't taught, so eventually it isn't sought out. At best it's mystified as part of a given writer/artist's 'talent', but either way it grows incumbent on the individual to care enough about that kind of skill to cultivate it.

And it's risky, because unmeasurables come with the possibility of rejection or failure. Drop in too many allegorical descriptions of the rose garden and someone will decide your prose is 'purple' and unserious. A lot of online audiences seem to be terrified of being considered pretentious in their tastes. That creates a real unwillingness to step out into discursive spaces where you 🫵 are expected to develop and explore a personal relationship with each element of a work. No guard rails, no right answers. Word of god is shit to us out here. But fear of getting that kind of analysis wrong makes people hove to work that slavishly explains itself on every page. And I'm left wondering, what's the point of art that leads every single participant to the same conclusion? See Spot run. Run, Spot, run. Down the rollforth land, yonder horizonways. I just want to read more weird stuff.

So I'm always struggling to picture my headmates' faces in my mind. With my family, I just need to focus to imagine their faces. With our introjects it's similar and I can always just look at their sources to remember what they look like. But with other headmates without sources like Xavery or Nyx? Imagining their faces is hell (although we made for them several picrews). They usually look like only details like hair without anything else or are blurry or distorted. What's funny, during some days I have no problem with that at all. During other days it's impossible to picture a face in my mind. Ha, interesting, hm?

Today for about an hour Louis tried to make me see Nyx's face, but it wasn't really possible. And later I just saw cryptids face very clearly without any problems. My imagination really works in a weird way.
