These Moments With You
pairing: 1940s!bucky barnes x fem!reader
summary: It's the morning Bucky is leaving for the war and you are savoring every second together while reminiscing on how you got here
warnings/tags: no use of y/n, fluff, domestic bucky, kissing, established relationship, reader is steveâs sister (I think..), best friendâs sister, talk of marriage
word count: 6.6k
note from megs: hii! this is my first Bucky fic and I donât know if yâall will like it but please let me know if you do! and feel free to send me messages, prompts, anons, etc. <3 (also Iâm not entirely confident on how the draft works so just go with it) (gif not mine)
The softest rays of sunlight danced across skin as the morning came into view. Limbs tangled in one another like wires that were destined to be intertwined forever. The sound of birds chirping and the hustle of the morning commuters could be heard in the distance, but this room paid no mind to the outside world.
Bright blue eyes scanned over the soft skin on an exposed shoulder like it was the most marvelous work of art in a museum. Fingertips slid up and down a thigh with a softness that was almost invisible. The heat radiating off one another was enough to scare away any cold morning wind that might sneak its way in.
These were Buckyâs favorite moments with you. In the soft, quiet morning bliss with no plans and no one coming to interrupt this moment. Just the two of you. Like it always had been and always will be. He often woke up before you and he was grateful for the time to sit in your presence and just admire you. No matter how many times he woke up next to you, he would never get over the view.
He loved the way your nose scrunched up every now and then when you slept and how you always stayed as close as possible to him in your sleep. Not that it was much different when you were awake. Your hair was all over the place but he made sure to push a few strands out of your face so he could look at you uninterrupted. Bucky had always been obsessed with you. Others said he looked at you like it was the last time he might ever get the chance. No one ever seemed to call him a romantic until they saw the two of you together and then no one could deny the hold you had over him. He would move buildings for you. Move across the country for you. Go to wars for you, whether he had the choice or not.
_____ He was recently reminded of the day you two met. His family had just moved in down the street from yours and when his mom saw that a young boy sat in a nearby front yard she pushed Bucky to go introduce himself with a tray of cookies. Despite being in a completely new region of the country Bucky walked around as if he had lived here his whole life. He had never been a kid who got nervous or didnât know what to say. He knew how to charm an older lady at the grocery store or volunteer to read in front of the whole class. Nothing was able to shake Bucky Barnes the way you were about to.
He walked across the road with too much confidence for a young boy as he introduced himself to the blond, scrawny boy playing with a military plane toy. âHi, my name is Bucky. Thought we could be friends.â He was very point blank with what he wanted as a kid, never liked beating around the bush. The other boy was too shy to say no so he said nothing as Bucky grabbed the other plane on the ground and started asking questions about it. In talking with his friend, he had revealed that he was the oldest of four kids and was jealous that his new friend was an only child. Before the smaller boy could correct him they were interrupted by the sound of footsteps running out towards them.
Bucky heard a voice calling his new friend in for dinner at the request of their mom. As he looked up from the toy in his hand and he met your eyes the world came to a halt, and everything seemed to move in slow motion. Even at that young of an age, Bucky suddenly understood what love felt like. You had the brightest smile he had ever seen, and he was already thinking of all the jokes he could rattle off to make sure it never left your face.
He was barely able to introduce himself to you, nerves taking over his small body in a way they never had before. All the cockiness he felt walking over here from being the older, taller and mysterious new kid was gone. âH-hi. Bucky. My name. My name is Bucky.â He stuttered over every word as if he had never said them before. You looked at him with curious eyes and a kind smile as you introduced yourself and quickly ran away after telling your brother to come inside.
As the years went on and Bucky grew up, he always kept his eyes on the young girl down the street. As he grew up and entered high school where he found more friends, joined sports and got the attention of plenty of girls he only ever thought of you. As he grew into his body and personality he was slowly able to stop acting like a fool when he passed by you in the hallway or came by your house to pick up your brother for some party they were going to.
His heart always skipped a beat when you were the one who opened the door, eyes bright and smile wide like you were just as excited to see him. You were his favorite part of the day every day because he felt the most comfortable and seen with you. There were more and more of those fleeting moments on the front porch or the side glances at each other from opposite sides of sidewalk as the three of you walked home from school as you both drowned out your brotherâs tangent on some new film. Slowly but surely you spent more and more time talking at the front door before alerting your brother that his friend was there. You would walk a bit slower on the way home, hanging in the back together as your hands brushed each otherâs.
Bucky was head over heels in love with you since the day he met you and he never spared anyone else a glance. A few girls had tried to dance with him a few times and despite how uninterested he was, he was still a gentleman, so he respectfully led them out to the floor, but he constantly looked over his shoulder to make sure you werenât looking.
He finally mustered up the courage to ask you out that summer before senior year. When he knocked on the front door and you answered with a greeting so warm it felt like home he suddenly lost all his words. You were just so pretty and happy to see him that he got so in his head that he blurted out his proposal while you were mid-sentence.
His face turned bright red, and he was ready to walk away and never look back, but you said yes without missing a beat, face lighting up at the idea. You had such an ease about you that he never seemed to have himself when he was around you. He mumbled out that heâd pick you up at seven as he tripped down the front steps from staring at you. The giggle you let out at his expense gave him butterflies as you shut the door.
There must have been hearts in his eyes the whole back to his house. Unknown to him, you were just as lovestruck when you had gone back in the house, leaning your back against the door as you shut your eyes in bliss and sighed at the thought of the beautiful boy who you were in love with. You rushed upstairs to start finding the perfect outfit to wear and after looking through your whole closet it seemed like that didnât exist.
You had been enamored with Bucky Barnes, the neighborhood flirt, your brotherâs best friend, for years. After you met him for the first time you ran away as fast as you did because you couldnât keep your giggles in from how cute you thought he was. That night you wrote his name in your diary and put yours next to it, liking how they looked together.
He was always nice to you; he listened to anything you wanted to talk about and never seemed to look down on you for being his friendâs little sister. And his eyes. You thought about his eyes every moment of the day from the moment you woke up to the moment you got to fall asleep and dream about them some more. When you locked eyes with him from across the room or in the hallway when heâd spend the night and you both wanted a glass of water, you felt like you could get lost in that blue for eternity.
You often went out of your way to end up in his path just in hopes heâd spare you a glance and maybe a slight smile. Taking a more inconvenient route to class because he was in those hallways or asking your mom to force your brother to bring you with him to hang out with Bucky. And when he mentioned an actress he liked one time, you started to style your hair the same way as her and almost passed out when he complimented you on it one day. You did whatever you could to get his attention and tried to establish yourself a girl worthy of his time and not as the neighbor girl who had never had a boy like her.
And the rebellious side of you loved that he was your brotherâs best friend. There was a forbidden feeling to him that only made you want him more. He was known around town as more of a bad boy, for reason unknown to you because there was not a bad bone in his body. He acted like a bit of flirt here and there and maybe skipped school a few times but was otherwise the kindest and most loyal person you knew. You knew he did well in school but kept it a secret to come off a bit cool to everyone else and maintain his âimageâ. But he never acted like that around you, always opting to spew random facts and show his goofy, unpolished side that you adored.
And you loved the way he was so protective of your brother, saving him from the bullies and real troublemakers of town, and it made you fall more in love with him every day. And the time he carried all your books to and from school when you had broken your arm had you seeing stars from how fast your heart raced. And when he saved you from the deep end of the pool once when you drifted too far as a young girl. And now he asked you on a date.
He showed up exactly at seven with three bouquets of flowers because he couldnât pick just one that was pretty enough for you. His hands shaking so much as he shoved them in his pockets to hide his nerves. He thought you were breathtaking as you stepped outside in what he now believed to be the best shade of pink just because you wore it.
You two walked to a local diner, one of the only places Bucky could afford with his weekly allowance, but you assured it was fine. He made sure to walk on the outside of the sidewalk and kept cracking jokes to keep it lighthearted and dissolve any awkward silences. But it was never awkward between the two of you. Not when you sat in silence as your eyes scanned the menu trying to decide what to order or when Bucky nervously drank his coke too fast and got bubbles in his nose which cause him to start coughing uncontrollably.
Bucky eventually took ahold of your hand from across the table and kept it there the rest of the night, which caused your stomach to flip as you tried not to show too much excitement. from the public display of affection. Â He had offered up the idea of sharing a milkshake, claiming âhe had to give you the best first date everâ and âthis what they do in the movies, so we have to do it as wellâ. When the drink came and you both leaned in towards your respective straws it seemed like you both underestimated how close youâd be. Neither of you touched the straws yet opting to just stop and stare into each otherâs eyes.
The diner was empty by this point of the night but there could have been a hundred people in there and youâd pay them no notice. It seemed like the rest of the world had disappeared and you only knew each other. You could feel his breath on your face and took notice of his eyes as they flickered down to your lips once. And then twice.
Just as you were about to say something his hand came up to cup your cheek as he closed the distance between you. The kiss was soft and innocent and filled with years of longing and dreaming. Your eyes fluttered shut as you took in everything about him, from the softness of his lips to the smell of his aftershave, and your hand came up to the collar of his button down shirt to pull him in even closer to you. You felt like you were floating as he somehow deepened the kiss. Just as you felt like you were going lightheaded, whether it be from the fact you were kissing Bucky Barnes or the lack of oxygen or both, you were interrupted by the waitress clearing her throat.
You pulled away first to turn your attention to the woman, but Bucky stayed put for a few seconds longer, eyes still shut and lips slightly parted, seemingly stunned at what just happened before he finally came back down to Earth. The waitress informed you they were closing, and you needed to leave, showing no interest in the young love before her. You guys scrambled out of the torn up booth as Bucky threw some bills on the table before you tugged his arm behind you, you both giggling as you ran out of the door.
You both spent the whole walk home laughing at the angry look the waitress had on her face. Bucky repeatedly mocked her voice when she told you both to leave and you laughed harder each time, tears welling up in your eyes. His arm was around your shoulders, and you were leaning into his chest, head dropping on his shoulder every few minutes as you let out the loudest laughs that were starting to hurt your abdomen.
As you got closer and closer to your house you finally realized how late it was and how much trouble you were going to be in for staying out past curfew. âBucky, we have to hurry home now. My parents are going to kill me.â You managed to get out in between laughs, Bucky unable to take you seriously as you sounded like you were struggling to breathe.
âDonât worry darlinâ, your parents love me. Iâll smooth it over.â And you knew he would. He was the smoothest guy you knew. So smooth that you were sure your face was bright red from the nickname he just used. As you walked up the steps to your house, stopped in front of the door and stood underneath the soft yellow hue of the porch light you felt your heart twisting in your chest at the idea of the night ending.
And Bucky felt the same way as he held both of your hands in his much bigger ones. He enjoyed every minute of getting to be alone with you and getting to have all your attention. You were worth every dollar he saved up for dinner and any punishment he might get for staying out past curfew from his own parents. He knew in this moment that he would do anything for you and never wanted to let you go.
As you were saying something along the lines of thanking him for the evening he moved towards you to connect his lips to yours for the second time that night. This kiss grew much needier and passionate than the one back at the diner. He was hungry for you but not in an animalistic way but in a lustful and desperate way. He needed every part of you and wanted to give every part of himself right back to you.
After the shock from his sudden advancement, you leaned into the kiss and let Bucky take the lead as he grabbed either side of your face and moved you against the side of the house, pinning you there. Your hands found their way around his neck and that allowed you to pull his body closer to yours as if you were preparing for someone to come take him away. This moment felt too good to be true and youâd never forgive yourself if you let some cruel force of nature ruin this moment.
You were practically melting in Buckyâs hands as he lightly bit on your lower lip and let out an almost indiscernible groan as you parted your mouth and allowed his tongue to move in. His much larger build was towering over you, and it felt like he was completely engulfing you, but you loved it. It felt like you were out there forever, just basking in each otherâs love and hiding in the darkness of the night, away from the world.
When Bucky finally pulled away and took in a large breath you already missed the feeling of him on you. You could compare kissing Bucky to needing oxygen and you were afraid that when it came to it, you could do without the latter. You both took a second to steady your breathing before deciding it was finally time to face the wrath of your parents.
Bucky took a few steps back, admiring your movements as you pulled out your key and put it in the lock. âI think I am falling in love you.â He breathed out just as you were turning back around to face him. A dazzling smile made its way to your face as you jumped into him, arms finding their spot back around his neck. He instantly wrapped his around your figure and laid his head on yours. You turned into the crook of his neck, placing a light kiss on the edge of his jaw, feeling him shiver beneath your touch. âI think I am falling in love with you too.â You whispered it like a secret into the night, not wanting to risk anyone else hearing this proclamation beside the young man before you.
There were many more dates after that. Countless nights of Bucky climbing the side of your house and sneaking into your room. Morning kisses before departing ways for class. You went to prom together and got voted cutest couple in the school yearbook. He stayed by your side through both of your parentâs deaths and did everything to keep your spirits up and help you through your grief.
It was you and Bucky. Always had been and always will be. You were each otherâs future.
_____
Bucky was taken out of his trance when you started to stir awake. His full attention back on you as you opened your eyes and found his immediately. He gave you a soft smile as he took in your beauty once again and planted a kiss on your nose.
You sighed in content as you smiled back at him before the realization hit you like a ton of bricks. This was the last morning youâd be waking up together for a long time. Or for the last time. Your face dropped and your demeanor turned sour as you turned yourself away from Bucky, not wanting him to see you cry.
As soon as his arms wrapped around you from behind the tears started falling and sobs raked through your body at an alarming rate. âBaby please, itâs okay. I promise it will all be okay.â Bucky tried to calm you down but nothing he said worked so he opted for just pulling you into his chest and resting his head slightly on top of you, keeping his cheek pressed to yours, occasionally planting kisses on your shoulder and wiping away tears that kept falling.
âThis isnât okay Bucky. Nothing about this is fair or okay. I am losing you.â This caused Bucky to sit up against the headboard, pick you up and settle you in his lap. You instantly curl up into him and lay on his chest, your tears immediately soaking his t-shirt.
âSweetheart, you are not losing me. I am not leaving you in the slightest. I just have to go away for a while.â His attempt at consoling you still unsuccessful and just causing you to cry harder at the idea of having to see him walk away from you. You could already feel your heart being ripped out of your chest at the thought of being so far away from him.
Bucky was your reason for everything. Your reason for waking up. Your reason for going outside. Your reason for getting pretty and put together. You did it all for him and because of him. To say Bucky was your soulmate was the understatement of the century. âIâm going to miss you so much.â You say as if you havenât already a million times since he got his deployment orders.
You both remember that day well. The day you found out heâd be leaving. That heâd be leaving you.
_____
You were shivering as you stood in front of the movie theater looking up and down the block for the boy who planned this date. It was a cold December night and Bucky had offered to meet you for a date to see a new film that night at six oâclock. At least you swore it was tonight. You wrote it down in your calendar as soon as you planned it and you triple checked the day, so you knew you were right.
The wind whipped around you as you hugged your coat tighter around your frame. It was getting dark, and you were alone with no way of knowing where your boyfriend was.
âExcuse me, do you have the time?â You leaned forward to ask an older couple walking slowly past you. They were walking hand and hand and almost didnât hear what you asked because they were so enthralled by their conversation. âItâs half past six dear.â The older gentleman gave you a slight nod and a soft smile after looking at his watch. You glanced back at them as they strolled down the block together, your heart swelling up at the love in their faces. It gave you hope that you and Bucky would be like that one day.
If you didnât kill him first for flaking on your date.
Bucky had never, in the two years of dating, ever missed a date or arrived a minute late. Especially if he was meeting you somewhere, never wanting to risk you being alone in town for too long. If anything were to ever happen to you he would never forgive himself. He also knew how lucky he was to be with you and get to call you his so why would he ever miss even a second of getting to be with you? Heâd be foolish to ever do something like that to you.
You started the walk back towards your street, stomping right past your house and going straight to Buckyâs. You marched up the steps, your feet feeling as heavy and stiff as bricks because of how cold you were. You knew his family was out of town, so you didnât bother knocking and just walked right into the house.
The warmth that engulfed you immediately relaxed your muscles and gave you a moment of peace before you were reminded of why you were here in the first place. Your first instinct was to be mad at Bucky, ready to confront him and yell at him for letting you stand out in the harsh Brooklyn winter for over half an hour alone because he overslept or just flat out forgot about you. But another voice in the back of your head kept running through all the worst case scenarios of things that could have happened to him.
You tried not to think about those because you could not stand to entertain the idea that he could be hurt or missing or worse. But maybe that voice knew something you didnât because the news you were about to receive may have been worse than the idea he was in the hospital with a broken leg.
After walking around the house for a minute you finally found the brunette. He was in the living room and sitting on the edge of the couch, slightly hunched over with his elbows on his knees. His head was resting in one of his hands, his fingers taking over the bottom half of his face as if he was trying to hide. The other was holding what looked like a letter, the opened envelope you assumed it came from was discarded on the floor by his feet.
He was dressed in a typical date night outfit, his coat and shoes on like he was just about to walk out the door before something stopped him. You slowly approached him, the floorboards creaking under your feet that would normally alert him to someoneâs presence, but his eyes stayed stuck on the mysterious letter.
âBucky? Are you okay?â Your voice cut through the silence of the room like a knife. Bucky turned towards you as he dropped the piece of paper and straightened his back out. You were met with bright red eyes filled with tears and rosy cheeks that he only ever got when he was stressed out. You were at his side in an instant and he fell into your arms as he started to let out soft sobs. Wrapping one arm around his large frame, your other reached out for the paper on the ground and brought it up to you.
âSelective Service of the United States of America To the attention of Sargeant James Buchanan Barnes
This letter contains your deployment date and information regarding mandatory military service due to the draft ordered by the President of the United States of America.â
It felt like your world came crashing down as you read through the letter, your own tears falling to mix with tears already on the page from Bucky just a few minutes ago. You knew plenty of your friends whose boyfriends have been shipped off already and you saw the misery they lived every day. You had already seen the military officials walk up to plenty of houses with only bad news. Every morning you read the newspaper with names of people lost. The idea of seeing Buckyâs name felt like it would end you.
âBaby, I am so sorry. Iâm so sorry that I have to do this to you.â Bucky cried as if he was sadder for you that he had to leave rather than scared of going to war himself. He was about to walk out the door for your date, stopping to fix his hair in the reflection of the window when he saw two men in uniform walk up the steps.
The first thought he had wasnât that he was scared to go to a foreign place or that he was going to have people shooting at him. It was that youâd be alone. He wouldnât be here to protect you. Bucky thought about you sitting here waiting for him and putting your life on pause for him. Stunting yourself in honor of him. But an even worse, crueler thought that flashed through his mind was you moving on. Getting tired of being alone and forgetting all about him. He imagined you falling in love with someone else and living the life he wanted with you himself so badly.
The two of you sat together, crying in each otherâs arms for hours as you promised a million things to each other. âI promise I will wait for you.â âI promise to come back to you.â âI promise to love you forever no matter what.â Your date was long forgotten as you moved to go to bed and fall asleep in each otherâs arms, holding each other just as tight as you had on your first date when neither of you wanted to let go. Neither of you really fell asleep, but nightmares still flooded both of your thoughts as you watched the night turn into morning. _____
Bucky was now rocking you back and forth a bit as his eyes were locked on his uniform hanging in the closet. He has already gone over a thousand different scenarios where you and him run away together to start a new life on the run from his impending imprisonment. But every time he tried to entertain the idea you shut him down and changed the subject, not wanting to give into any sliver of false hope.
It stayed quiet between the two of you for the rest of the morning as you got ready together. You have done this so many times that you move so easily around each other, already knowing who will step where and when. Bucky handed you your hairbrush and you handed him his comb. Your fingers brushed during the exchange, and it gave you both the same tingly feeling you got when you held hands during a fire drill at school as kids. Small smiles and shoulder bumps were shared as you brushed your teeth next to each like you have for every morning since moving into together after high school.
You let out shaky breaths as Bucky zipped his camo green duffel bag closed and slung it over his shoulder. He was stood up straight and had a questioning look on his face as you stared him down. He gestured his eyes down and put his arm not holding his duffel straight out and did a slow spin. âSo, how do I look? Is everything in order?â He had the smallest smirk creeping up on his lips as he fished for a compliment, knowing that despite the situation, you loved how he looked in his full military get-up.
âYou look like my perfect military man.â You stepped towards him to plant a quick, soft kiss on his lips and gave him a forced smile before turning on your heels and leaving the room. Buckyâs face dropped a bit, the reminder of how hard this was for you hitting him in the gut. He knew you were trying your best to remain positive in front of him, but he felt helpless. Bucky prided himself on always being able to lift your spirits. When you had the flu, he kept you company with all your favorite snacks and watched all your television shows with you. And when you and your brother got into a fight about something stupid he let you vent everything out on your date that night and kept letting you order more milkshakes. He even held your hair back as you threw them all up in the toilet that night.
But as the two of you silently walked up to the line of buses waiting to whisk him away there was nothing he could have done to stop the wheels in your head that were turning at alarming rates. He watched as your eyes darted around to all the women crying in the hands of their own military men that they were about to bid a farewell to just like you. He watched young children hug their fatherâs goodbye before they stepped away. Moms and dads waving goodbye to their sons who barely looked 18. It was a horrible sight but nothing broke Buckyâs heart more than you looking up at him, tears rolling down your cheeks and nose red from how many times you have rubbed a handkerchief over it.
âLast names starting with A through C report to buses 1 and 2 in five minutes!â A voice yelled out over an intercom just as you and Bucky approached the parking lot. He handed his duffel over to man covered in medals and watched as it got thrown into a pile of identical ones. The internal countdown started in your mind as the last few moments with Bucky passed you by.
Bucky grabbed your hand and pulled you to the outside of the crowd, away from the loud roaring of the busesâ engines and the depressing sobs from every direction. Your eyes were drifting through the scene in front you again before Bucky grabbed your face on either side and pulled you back to him. âThereâs my beautiful girl.â He whispered as he connected his eyes with yours and dropped his hands from your face to grab your hands from your sides.
âI wanted to ask you something before I leave. If youâll let me.â His voice stayed low as he dug his hand in his pocket, his eyes still on yours the whole time. You watched as he took a step back from you and started to take a knee in front of you. Your hand came up to cover your mouth as you let out a gasp at the sight in front of you. As Bucky steadied himself, he was now holding a small black box in front you.
Bucky let out a shaky breath, âI know this is a little last minute, but I wanted this moment to have a happy component for us. I canât let the last time you see me for a while be one of the worst moments of your life.â He let out a soft chuckle as he repeated the words you said a few days ago back to you. You had a few too many drinks and had gotten a little too honest with how much you had thought of your last moments together. You had already called this moment the worst moment of your life before it had even happened. But Bucky already seemed to have other plans to make sure that didnât happen.
âI have loved you for so long I canât remember what life was before. But a life without you is only allowed to exist in my nightmares because now that I have you I never want to let you go.â Bucky had opened the little black box to reveal a thin gold band with an oval diamond in middle and two smaller ones around it. It sparked in a way that was almost as beautiful as he thought you were.
âEvery time I look at you, all I can think about is our future. And I know you think about our future a lot as well, but you focus so much on what can go wrong. I am just one ordinary man who got lucky enough to be with you so I canât do much to change the future and change what might happen to us. But no matter what my future holds I know I want you in it.â There were tears streaming down both of your faces at this point, the sound of the minute warning for the buses drowned out in the background. âI donât think I will ever know how a heart as beautiful and kind and smart as yours could ever find the room to love a messed up man like me, but I will spend the rest of this life trying to become worthy of even a fraction of your love.â
âBut what I do know is that I am meant to be wherever you are. So, here I am, James Buchanan Barnes, asking you to marry me and promising you that I will come home to you and give you the life you deserve.â
It felt like your life together flashed before your eyes as you looked down at this man, who was looking up at you as if you were his everything. You felt the butterflies you got when he introduced himself to you for the first time and you got the shiver down your spine from when he touched your lower back trying to get past you at a party once. Every kiss and touch ghosted your whole body as you felt like you were starting to float.
And it also felt like your whole future came rushing at you too. Not the doomed one you often shared on late nights with Bucky when you couldnât control your racing thoughts. Right now you could only see the moment you get reunited with him as you celebrate the end of the war in the streets. You saw a beautiful house in the suburbs where your kids ran around the backyard with the family dog and Bucky was grilling burgers for dinner as you prepped the salad and set the table. You imagined growing old together and reminiscing on this exact moment as you babysat grandkids.
Bucky eyes grew in size as he nervously glanced over to the men marching towards him, screaming his name and telling him to get a move on. He quickly stood to his feet and took the ring out of the box. He grabbed your left hand and hovered the ring on your finger.
âDonât want to rush you baby but I kind of need an answer.â That smirk made its way to his face as you looked down at the ring shaking against your hand from Buckyâs own nerves. You already loved the way it looked against your skin and you heart raced knowing that everyone would now know that you were his and he was yours.
âOf course Bucky. I would marry you in every lifetime no matter what.â You rambled your words as fast you could before bringing your right hand to the back of Buckyâs neck and pulling him into you. As your lips connected he slid the ring on to your finger, making sure it sat snug before moving his hands to rest on your waist. Your left hand found your right as you pushed every emotion you could into the kiss. Your hands messed with the ends of hair that had fallen out of his hat and his hands gripped your waist in a way that made you feel like a woman.
In an instant he was ripped away from you and his hands left your waist as he was pulled towards the buses. Despite being taken away, Bucky had the goofiest smirk and lovestruck eyes as he watched you chase after him. His eyes glanced down at the ring sparkling on your finger and his heart swelled up. He knew that no matter what happened next you agreed to marry him and that was the most a man like him could ask for.
Bucky found a seat on the bus and joined the other men in pushing towards a window where he leaned out to reach out to you where you stood below him. He grabbed your hand one last time, his thumb rubbing over the ring he just gave you. He pulled it up to his mouth and left a light kiss on top of the ring just as the bus starting to pull away. You stood on that sidewalk and watched him fade away into the early morning sun, holding your left hand close to your heart.

sooo good!!!
Congrats on 7k â„ïž what about Bucky Barnes + last second confession?
.âïœĄFirst (and Last)ïœĄâ.
7k Bingo Celebration
40s!Bucky Barnes x plus size reader
You loved him for so long, and now heâs being sent to war. Will you tell him that you love him before he leaves you behind?
Warnings: angst, fluff, friends to lovers, canon events, last second confession, ww2, time skip, general HYDRA warnings WC: 1k Minors DNI Library- @hannibals-favourite-meal-library
You had known this day was coming for weeks, since the moment that damned letter arrived at the Barnes household that changed everything. You knew it was coming but you didnât accept it, how could you accept the fact that your best friend was being sent to fight in a war halfway around the world and you might never see him again. You donât think you even processed that he was leaving until Steve stood on your doorstep, his head tilted down so no one could see his tears. You tore down your apartment steps before he could utter a word, blindly running towards the train station you had been avoiding for weeks.
Bucky had always been by your side, a constant comfort that never allowed you a moment of peace. You donât know when your childish crush on him had morphed into something more. Maybe it was when he cradled your face, wiping away your tears after a date stood you up, or when he blew almost all his money to get you a leather-bound copy of your favourite book. Or maybe it wasnât just one moment but an amalgamation of every second you spent by his side, watching him grow from a gangly, reckless boy into a charming, honourable man. With that stupid cocky grin of his and blue eyes that held an ocean of fondness each time he looked at you.
You had fallen in love with him and he was leaving before you could even say good-bye.
The station was packed with smoke, people and tears. Families cried over their sons, leaning on each other as hundreds of boys crammed into the train cars, uniforms pristine and rucksacks loaded down with terror and hope. You shoved your way through the crowd, searching each tear-stained face and fogged up window, your panic mounting with each carriage you passed. Were you too late? Was Bucky on an earlier train?
Your mind spun with despair. You shouldâve been there for him the second he got his draft letter, should've held him close and reassured him that no matter what, you would always be there. Instead you cried when he got his uniform and refused to accompany him and Steve to the science expo in favour of your own self-pity. You had lost him before you could even have him.
âBucky!â Your voice barely broke over the din.
âSweetheart?â You spun on your heel and suddenly, he was there. Bucky jumped from the trainâs caboose, uncaring of his abandoned bag as he pushed through the crowd towards you. He looked perfectly put together which made your heart ache. You wanted him in his simple button-down shirt and trousers, lounging in your kitchen.
The crowd parted for just a moment, letting you run straight into his awaiting arms. He caught you like he always did, without hesitation or shame. You buried yourself into the warmth of his body and willed yourself not to imagine the worst. You had to make yourself believe that he would come back because without him, who were you?
âHey there, gorgeous. What are you doing here?â You wanted to answer him, to apologise for every selfish thing you had done, to even say that you would miss him. But instead you wrapped one of your hands around the back of his neck and tugged his lips to yours.
Bucky stiffened in your arms before he melted into the kiss, holding you even tighter to him as it deepened. You clung to his broad shoulders, his arms, anywhere you could grab while your mind buzzed happily. His hands trailed down your body to your wide hips, making you gasp into his mouth.
âNow what was that for? Not that Iâm complaining.â Heat bloomed across your cheeks as you both struggled to catch your breath.
âI love you.â It burst out from somewhere deep inside of you. âI love you so much James and I couldnât let you leave without telling you.â
He beamed at you. âI love you. My sweet girl, god do I love you but you have terrible timing. Springing this on me when I canât take you out and treat you right.â Your tears came suddenly, relief dripping down your face and onto his uniform.Â
âI have to keep you on your toes donât I?â The thrum around you began to die as time slipped away. He cupped your jaw, cradling your face as if you were delicate china.
âIâm gonna come back and take you on that date sweetheart.â You laughed through your tears as Buckyâs smile softened.
âYou better keep that promise Barnes.â His thumb traced the soft line of your cheek, eyes dropping to your lips once more.
âI wouldnât miss it for the world.â He kissed you one last time before the train whistle screamed and he was pulled away from you. He kept your gaze until the train disappeared around a bend, leaving you standing on the platform, waiting for that date.
ââââââ
90 years later
The buzz of electricity overhead was the only sign of life within the base but still, Bucky kept his gun raised, anticipating the worst. His team had already slipped into the lower levels, letting him ignore the burning in the back of his mind every time he thought about those damned labs.Â
With each room he cleared, that burning eased until he felt a bit more like himself again. He knew it wouldnât all come back, so many pieces have been lost over the years and most of him was bound to you, still on that platform, waiting for the day that he would come home.
Samâs voice crackled through his earpiece. âThereâs more cryo-pods down here. Only one is operational.â His stomach twisted. Who else was subjected to the torture he endured? Or maybe it was a scientist that inevitably would get a government pardon just for the capability of their mind.Â
âGot a name plate here, thatâs new.â Bucky rolled his eyes and reached for the small plastic part in his ear until the next words froze him in place, a lost piece of himself suddenly clicking back into place.
âAnyone know a Y/N Y/L/N?â

off duty - fluff

18 + part two
pairing: avenger!bucky barnes x fem!avenger!younger!reader summary: after a rare night off, you stumble back into avengers tower at 2 am.. tipsy, feet hurting, and definitely not expecting to run into bucky barnes on the couch. word count: 5.8k warning(s): light cursing, alcohol consumption/intoxication, fluff, use of nicknames, humor, age gap, mild suggestive language, reader is a young adult avenger, reader is described as wanting to party a/n: here's my first fic! it's a throwback to the avengers before the infinity war. i really hope you enjoy :) and if you do, please like, comment, or reblog! <3
cherry - lana del rey
being a young adult and an avenger at the same time wasn't easy. you wanted to be like others your age... party, stay out late, maybe dance with a random guy you found mildly attractive under the dim nightclub lighting, then bolt when you actually saw his face in the light. hell, you would settle for just shopping or grabbing lunch with your friends, however mundane that sounded.
but, as a full-time avenger, you weren't privy to this lifestyle. the main issue was your schedule. being an avenger isn't exactly a 9â5 job... it's more 24/7. you're meant to always be ready to jump into a mission when needed. with your time mainly consisting of training, meetings, and missions, you didn't exactly have free time.
this didn't stop your friends from pushing, though, and they eventually got through. so, after a few long conversations of begging stark, here you are, stumbling into the elevator of the avengers tower at like 2 in the morning, ever so slightly intoxicated. who can blame you? it was your first night off in a while; of course you took advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and got shitfaced. you might regret it during training later that day, but for now, all that mattered was that you had fun with your friends.
you did regret wearing heels, though. you wanted to trade in your boots for something more fun tonight, but god, did your feet hurt. you were also dying to get out of your minidress. considering your wardrobe now reflects your job and only consists of suits and very little casual clothes, you had to borrow this dress from your friend. you were beginning to remember why you never liked to wear dresses even before joining the avengers.
the elevator dinged, and the door opened to the top floor, the avengers' quarters. you dragged yourself out, hair messy, dress slightly hiked up, and feet already blistering. your makeup made it clear you had been sweating on a dancefloor not long ago. you headed to your room when a voice stopped you in your tracks.
"where ya been?"
you turned to the source, shocked to see bucky barnes sitting on the sofa. he was laid back, one arm draped lazily on the backrest, and the other on his knee. he was almost smirking, likely having a good idea of your whereabouts based on your appearance.
you and the winter soldier weren't exactly close. he was a very quiet and reserved guy, usually a man of few words. your interactions mainly consisted of short conversation and sometimes catching him staring at you on the quinjet or in meetings. you never really thought much of it.
but his tone... his expression right now was different. it was weird, but a good weird.
"why're you awake?" you huffed, walking toward the couch.
"couldn't sleep," he stated simply, scanning your form with that smug look on his face. "you have a fun night?" he chuckled to himself a bit.
"yeah, i went out with some friends," you replied, sitting on the couch. you began fiddling with your heels, wanting to go ahead and relieve yourself of the pain. however, the alcohol was messing with your coordination, and you were struggling rather pathetically.
noticing the pout forming on your lips and the clear trouble you were having, bucky snickered, speaking in his gruff voice, "need some help?"
you looked up at him and nodded, still pouting. without a word, he moved a bit closer to you and curled his fingers around your ankles, a soft gasp escaping your lips as he rested them across his lap. you were reclining into the corner of the sofa now, watching him in shock. he hummed as his fingers slipped through the straps of the heels, sliding them off your feet gently. he set them down carefully, his free hand absentmindedly rubbing your calves.
"i've never seen you in anything but your boots," he grinned, turning his head toward you. "so, how much did you drink?" his grin turned into a knowing smirk.
you scoffed, pulling your legs away, drawing your knees to your chest. the short dress wasnât doing you any favors, and you were probably flashing him, but bucky never looked. he was a gentleman... at least in the ways that mattered. you groaned, rubbing your face sleepily. no point in pretending.
"too much," you muttered.
"yeah, i can tell. you practically stumbled out of the elevator," he chuckled, eyes following your every move.
you let out a half-laugh, sheepish. your head dropped to rest on your knee as you sighed.
"kill me."
"not tonight, doll. iâm off duty."
your head lifted slightly, an eyebrow raising. "did you just call me âdollâ?" you snickered at the old-fashioned nickname, trying to hide how much it made your heart beat faster.
he smirked, leaning back again with that maddening ease. "i dunno. you kinda look like one."
was he flirting? surely not. he probably saw you as some annoying kid.
"alright, old man. what do you call natasha then? sugar? darling?" you smiled lazily, thinking of more old-timey terms of endearment.
"hell no. sheâd break my jaw," he grinned.
"and you think i wonât break your jaw?" you smirked, raising a brow.
bucky scoffed out a laugh. "oh, i'm sure you can, but i don't think you would."
"if i wasn't tipsy, i might've. you're getting off easy this time, grandpa," you giggled, starting to slur your words. your eyelids were beginning to feel heavy, and you found your head resting on your knee again.
bucky laughed at your slurred speech, not sure if it was the alcohol or just exhaustion. "you okay, doll?"
"mhm," you hummed, obviously dozing off.
"alright, i guess i'll babysit the lightweight," he joked, his grin never faltering.
you eventually drifted off, and so did bucky not long after. you both slept better than you had in a while. that was, until you awoke to the stunned faces of the other avengers. they definitely weren't expecting to find you in bucky's arms on the sofa. hell, you weren't expecting it either.
thanks so much for reading <3

the popcorn incident (r.r.)

synopsis : You hate Bob Reynolds. Or at least, thatâs what you keep telling yourself â ever since he pulled away and got closer to Yelena. Now you spend most of your time ranting about him to BuckyâŠ
Meanwhile, Bob spends most of his time avoiding you. (Because heâs pretty sure you like Bucky. And heâs very sure heâs in love with you.)
pairing : robert 'bob' reynolds x reader / sentry x reader
content : pure fluff (again lol don't hate me on this), slight enemiestolovers!au , friendstolovers!au , jealous!bobreynolds
warning/s : kinda cheesy idk
word count : 4.6k
You hate Bob Reynolds.
You hate the way he walks into a room and wonât look at you. You hate the way his eyes flicker toward you when he thinks youâre not watching. You hate how he always chooses the furthest seat from yours now, even though (once) you were the person he chose first.
And worst of all?
You hate how much you still want him to come sit next to you.
The common room smells like popcorn and vaguely burnt pizza. Avaâs cracked the windows again, letting in the cool night air from the New York sky outside. Dim overhead bulbs cast the room in warm yellow light that barely competes with the flickering horror movie on screen.
Yelena is curled on a beanbag chair with her legs tucked under her like a smug cat, hoodie two sizes too big. Johnâs hogging the recliner, a beer in one hand and his dumb Stars-and-Stripes socks visible from where his boots sit discarded nearby. Avaâs lounging in the corner with a bowl of gummy worms and a knowing smirk.
You walk in behind Bucky, both of you still talking about a mission briefing that had somehow turned into a discussion about raccoons with knives.
âDo not pretend a raccoon could take you down,â you mutter as Bucky snorts.
âIâm just saying, itâs more dangerous than you think,â Bucky deadpans. âEspecially with a butter knife.â
âYouâre ridiculous.â
He shrugs. âIâm not the one who got chased through a compound last week by a genetically engineered goose.â
âThat goose had rage in its soul,â you hiss, before realizing the entire room is listening. Yelena snorts into her sleeve. Ava just shakes her head.
You clear your throat, cheeks warm. Your eyes instinctively scan the roomâand stop.
There. Couch. Right side.
Bob.
Heâs sitting low, one leg crossed over the other knee, navy-blue sweater sleeves bunched up his forearms. His posture is slouched, but his eyes are sharp, focused on the screen, until you catch the briefest glance your way.
Your stomach tightens.
He looks back at the screen before you can even smile.
You hesitate, then move toward the couch. The big popcorn bowl is balanced between him and Bucky. You think about sitting next to Bob, think about all the nights you used to sit shoulder to shoulder, knees brushing, fingers grazing accidentally over the same handful of popcorn.
Maybe you can fix this. Maybe heâll say something. Maybe this silence heâs been giving you for weeks will finally end.
You hover by the bowl. âHey,â you say, careful and light. âCan I grab some?â
Bob doesnât look at you. His hand tenses slightly on the bowlâs rim. He shifts it toward you in silence.
Your fingers brush his.
He pulls back like heâs touched a hot stove.
You feel it like a slap.
You grab the popcorn, mutter a stiff, âThanks,â and move to sit next to Bucky instead.
Bucky shifts slightly to give you room. You slump beside him, chewing angrily.
âWell that was painful,â Bucky mutters under his breath.
You donât respond.
âHe flinched,â Bucky continues, almost in awe. âLike your fingers were poison.â
You keep your eyes on the screen. âMaybe they are.â
âStrike four,â he whispers.
You glance at him. âYouâve been keeping count?â
âOf every tragic interaction, yes.â
You throw a kernel of popcorn at him. He catches it mid-air.
You lean in slightly, voice low. âDo you think heâs mad at me?â
âI think heâs a dumbass.â
You smile, but itâs hollow.
âI justâdonât get it. We used to talk. Like⊠a lot. He used to laugh at my dumb jokes. Now he acts like I stole his dog.â
âMaybe you did.â
You blink. âWhat?â
âMaybe you stole his metaphorical dog.â
You stare at him. âThatâs the worst theory Iâve ever heard.â
âItâs still better than yours,â Bucky mutters.
From across the couch, you feel Bob shift. You glanceâheâs still watching the screen, but his fingers have stopped moving. The popcorn bowl rests untouched now, perfectly still in his lap.
The movie flickers into a tense silence.
Then John, voice flat, says, âCan the lovebirds quiet down?â
Your entire spine stiffens.
âExcuse me?â you hiss.
âShh,â John says, not even turning.
You stare ahead, cheeks burning. Bucky looks halfway between smug and offended.
âLovebirds,â he whispers, amused.
âDonât evenââ
âI mean, if the shoe fitsâŠâ
You elbow him sharply. âI hate you.â
âYou donât,â he says, still smiling.
You risk another glance toward Bob.
His jaw is tight. His eyes are still on the screen. But thereâs a twitch in his cheek. The kind he gets when somethingâs bothering him.
He doesnât look at you.
You look away first.
The meeting room is too cold.
The A/Câs on full blast, humming above the fluorescent lights. You swear Val keeps it that way just to remind you sheâs in charge of everythingâincluding your blood circulation.
Youâre running late.
You shove the door open with a muttered apology, the metal creaking slightly, and step insideâboots still muddy from training. Your hairâs barely dry from your post-mission shower, damp strands sticking to your neck. You tug at the collar of your jacket, feeling both underdressed and overstimulated.
Everyoneâs already seated.
Yelenaâs halfway through a protein bar and somehow still managing to lounge in a government-grade steel chair like itâs a beanbag. Avaâs scrolling her tablet, boots on the table despite multiple prior threats from Val. Walkerâs twirling a pen and looking like heâs about to make a comment no one asked for.
Then your eyes land on him.
Bob.
Second from the right. Notebook closed in front of him. Shoulders hunched slightly like heâs trying to make himself smaller, or maybe disappear altogether.
Two empty chairs beside him.
You hesitate.
The little voice in your headâthe one thatâs gotten crueler latelyâsays, Donât bother. But you ignore it.
You step around the table, slow but deliberate.
Your pulse kicks up as you approach. You wonderâstupidly, hopefullyâif maybe this is the moment. Maybe today, heâll look up. Maybe heâll say âHey,â like he used to, voice low and warm. Maybe youâll sit beside him and feel something like before.
You stop beside the chair next to him.
Bob looks up.
Your breath catches.
And thenâ
He blinks. His mouth twitches. Not a smile. Not even close.
He closes his notebook.
And he stands.
Your eyes widen. He murmurs something to Yelenaâtoo low for you to hearâbut she raises one eyebrow and gives him a look that says Seriously? Bob says nothing else. He walks around the back of the table, silent and swift, and drops into a chair across the room.
Your throat tightens.
You sit down heavily in the now-empty chair next to Bucky.
âWow,â Bucky mutters, barely audible. âThat was⊠something.â
You just shake your head, biting the inside of your cheek. âWhat the hell was that?â
Bucky leans in. âHe looked like you were holding a knife.â
âMaybe I should start holding one.â
Val walks in, clapping her hands once. âAlright, Thunderbolts. Everyone awake? Good. Letâs make this quick. Iâve got meetings stacked higher than Walkerâs ego.â
Walker scoffs. âHilarious.â
âQuiet, star-spangled disaster,â Val says dryly.
You try to focus. Val drones on about the last missionâerrors, improvements, recon notes. Words blur into static.
Bob doesnât look at you. Not once.
You glance at himâheâs leaning back, hands clasped in his lap, eyes fixed on the slide deck like it owes him something. Heâs not scribbling notes like he usually does. Heâs not twirling his pen. Heâs not moving.
You grit your teeth and turn to Bucky.
âHeâs ignoring me again.â
Bucky side-eyes you. âWeâre mid-briefing.â
âIâm going to strangle him with his own hoodie.â
âThatâs dramatic. Effective, though.â
Val clicks to the next slide.
You whisper, âWhy is he like this? He used to talk to me.â
âUsed to eat lunch with you too,â Bucky murmurs. âUsed to laugh.â
âI know that.â
âAnd now heâs pretending you donât exist.â
âExactly!â
âYou think maybe⊠thatâs the opposite of whatâs happening?â
You blink. âWhat?â
Bucky just smirks.
Thenâ
Val slaps a hand on the table. âHey. Lovebirds. Try keeping the domestic bickering to a whisper?â
Your soul leaves your body.
You blink. âIâm sorryâwhat?â
Walker snorts. Ava doesnât even look up from her tablet.
Val waves a hand. âWhatever. Just pay attention. Iâm not repeating myself for your unresolved sexual tension.â
The room falls quiet.
Bucky leans into his hand, elbow on the table. âI think weâve just been outed.â
You bury your face in your hands. âThis is a nightmare.â
You chance a glance at Bob.
He hasnât moved.
Heâs staring at the table. Not at you. But his knuckles are white where they rest on his knee.
Youâre too stunned to say anything.
The rest of the debrief is a blur.
The training room smells like rubber mats and frustration.
Sweat beads at the back of your neck as you pace toward the punching dummies, your left ankle throbbing with every step. You rolled it badâstupidlyâduring a dodging drill with Ava and Walker. Youâd laughed it off at the time, brushing dirt off your shoulder like it was nothing.
But now that the adrenalineâs fading, it hurts.
The sunâs just beginning to dip behind the compoundâs reinforced windows, casting the entire gym in a low, orange haze. Yelena is by the far wall, throwing knives at a wooden dummyâs face like sheâs flirting with murder. Avaâs perched on a bench with her headphones in, scrolling through footage on her tablet. Walkerâs long gone, probably off to inflate his ego somewhere else.
And thereâs Bob. Across the room.
Heâs standing by the free weights, curling a bar like it weighs nothing. His hairâs damp at the edges, sticking slightly to his temples. Heâs in his navy long-sleeve againâhis favorite, the one thatâs worn thin at the elbows. His eyes flick toward you as you limp slightly past.
Your breath catches.
Itâs the first time heâs looked at you today.
You feel it. That familiar flutter in your chest that you keep trying to kill.
You open your mouthâto say anythingâbut hesitate. He looks like he might say something, too. Like heâs going to take a step forward. His fingers twitch slightly against the bar.
And then you hear it:
âYou alright?â
You turn.
Buckyâs walking over from the hallway, towel slung around his shoulders, brow furrowed as he catches your limp.
âOh. Yeah. Just twisted it earlier. Itâs not bad.â You wave a hand like that makes it true.
âLet me see,â he says, already crouching down beside the bench. âSit.â
You hesitate. âI was gonnaââ You glance back toward Bob.
But heâs still standing there. Still watching. Frozen in place.
Whatever he was going to sayâif he was going to say itâdies.
He takes one slow step back.
You sigh, quietly, and sit down beside Bucky instead.
He pulls your boot off gently, inspecting the swollen ankle.
You wince. âIâve had worse.â
âDoesnât mean you should ignore it.â Bucky digs in a nearby locker for an ice pack. âYou planning on training through this like a moron, or letting me tape it?â
You roll your eyes, but smile. âFine. Doctor Barnes.â
âIâll add that to the list of titles I never asked for.â
Across the room, Bob hasnât moved.
His jawâs tight. His hands open and close once, then again. He watches the two of you quietly, unreadable.
He takes a breath, like heâs about to come over anyway.
But Yelena appears behind him without warning. âYouâre glaring again,â she mutters.
Bob startles, just barely. âIâm not.â
âYou are.â
âI wasnâtââ He glances over at you and Bucky. Buckyâs crouched now, wrapping your ankle in gauze, your hand on his shoulder to keep balance. You laugh at something he says.
Bob turns away.
Yelena raises an eyebrow. âYou gonna keep lying or just explode already?â
âShut up,â Bob mutters.
âSure,â she says, biting into an energy bar. âJust let me know when youâre done pining like a 17-year-old Victorian widow.â
He shoots her a look, but sheâs already walking away.
He turns back toward you, just in time to see you toss Bucky an appreciative smile and say, âThanks, Buck.â
And then youâre goneâhobbling off toward the lockers with Bucky trailing beside you.
Bob stares at the door long after youâve disappeared.
Bobâs hands have been sitting still for too long.
One of them rests on the disassembled sidearm laid out in front of him, the other curled tight against his jaw as he leans on the table. His brow is furrowed. His brain hasnât registered a single thing in the last fifteen minutes. The room is quiet, except for the distant hum of the overhead lights and the occasional thud of Yelena dropping gear somewhere behind him.
He stares at the gun like itâll reassemble his thoughts for him.
âYouâre sulking again,â comes her voice, sharp and dry as vodka.
He doesnât look up. âIâm not.â
âYouâre brooding in the dark, surrounded by dangerous objects,â she replies, stepping closer and leaning against the metal counter with a crunch of her granola bar. âThatâs called sulking, Bob.â
âIâm fine.â
âYouâre lying.â
He exhales, long and slow. âIâm just⊠thinking.â
âAbout her?â Yelena chews. âOr are we pretending you donât do that every three hours?â
He doesnât answer. Just picks up a screwdriver, flips it once in his palm, then puts it back down like itâs too heavy to hold.
She softens a little. âWhat happened this time?â
He doesnât know where to start. He could say, I saw her ankle give out and didnât move fast enough. Or maybe, I saw her smile at Bucky again and it felt like a kick to the ribs. But none of that explains how badly he wants to rewind everything. Go back to when you used to wait for him after missions. When youâd lean on his shoulder while teasing Walker or smirking at Yelena like you were in on some inside joke Bob would never understand.
He remembers the sound of your laugh. That full-bodied, uncaring laugh that only came out when you felt safe. You used to laugh like that around him.
âI think she hates me,â he says eventually, voice low.
âShe doesnât,â Yelena says without hesitation.
âShe used to talk to me,â he mutters, running a hand through his hair. âEvery day. About random stuffâTV shows, your neighborâs dog, the vending machine being rigged. And I was stupid enough to think it would last.â
Yelena quirks an eyebrow. âWhat changed?â
âI did.â
And he did. Somewhere in the space between trusting you and falling for you, he got weird. He started pulling back, dodging eye contact, brushing off conversations before they could start. He didnât know how to handle itâhow to want you without scaring you away.
So instead, he scared himself into silence.
Youâd walked into the common room that night with Bucky at your side, your laugh trailing behind you like perfume. You were trying to get popcornâjust a normal thingâbut then your hand brushed his and his whole body tensed like heâd touched fire. He pulled back before he even thought about it.
Your smile faded so fast it made his stomach turn.
He shouldâve said something. Sorry. I didnât mean toâ
But instead, he just froze, watching you walk away, bowl in hand, settling on the couch next to Bucky like that was where you belonged now.
He couldnât focus on the movie. He couldnât even hear it over the pounding in his ears. Every time you leaned into Buckyâs side, something bitter tightened in his throat. You didnât even look his way after that. Why would you?
He hadnât just pulled away. Heâd disappeared.
Yelena watches him quietly now, like she knows where his mind is drifting. âDid something else happen?â
He nods. âDebrief, a few days ago.â
She waits.
âI walked in and saw her scanning the room,â he says. âShe looked like she was gonna sit next to me. She almost did. But I⊠I moved.â
âYou ran.â
He winces. âWalked. Quickly. To the other side of the table.â
âCoward.â
âI know.â He leans back, eyes flicking to the ceiling. âI couldnât do it. I was going to say hi. Ask about her shoulderâshe took a hit on the last missionâbut I panicked.â
Yelena hums in that way she does when sheâs judging him quietly.
âShe sat next to Bucky instead. Again,â Bob adds, bitterness creeping into his voice. âThey were whispering to each other, laughing during Valâs rundown, and then Val saysââ His voice shifts, mocking: ââCan the lovebirds pay attention?ââ
Yelena snorts.
âShe didnât deny it,â Bob says quickly, like he needs her to know this part. âDidnât laugh, didnât say, weâre not a thing. Just turned red and glared at Val, like it was a thing and she was embarrassed about it.â
Yelena doesnât answer right away.
Bob lets his head drop forward into his hands. âI know it sounds stupid. It is stupid. But I keep seeing them together, and itâs not just the proximity. Itâs the way she looks at him. Talks to him.â
âYou mean the way she used to talk to you?"
He goes still.
Yelena softens, voice less teasing. âBob⊠maybe sheâs just trying to fill the space you left.â
He doesnât know what to say to that.
Then yesterday happened.
He saw you limp into the gym and his entire nervous system lit up. You were trying to play it cool, but he knew that lookâyou were in pain and trying not to show it.
He took one step forward, almost called your name.
But Bucky beat him to it.
Hey, you alright?
Bob watched, rooted in place, as you let Bucky guide you to the bench. Watched you let him take off your boot. Wrap your ankle. You laughed at something he said again, that same sound Bob used to hear on accidentâwhen you were scrolling your phone on the couch beside him, or teasing him over his âweird cult-leaderâ handwriting.
Bobâs hands had clenched. His chest felt hollow.
And still, he hadnât moved.
âEvery time I try to fix it, I mess it up more,â he says now, his voice ragged with frustration. âAnd every time I donât fix it, I lose her a little more.â
Yelena tosses her granola wrapper in the bin. âSo what, youâre just going to keep watching her from across the room like some tragic Regency novel?â
Bob glares weakly. âI just⊠I donât know what she wants anymore.â
âWell,â Yelena stands, dusting off her pants. âMaybe she doesnât either. Youâve given her nothing to work with.â
He swallows.
Sheâs right.
He remembers the way you used to look at himâeyes full of challenge, of trust. You donât look at him like that anymore.
Now, when you glance his way, thereâs hurt in your eyes. And confusion. And maybeâjust maybeâa little hope you havenât managed to kill off completely.
Bob wants to believe it isnât too late.
But he also knows heâs running out of chances to find out.
The med bay is quiet except for the gentle whir of the portable stim unit on your ankle. You should be focusing on your recovery, on resting, but your mindâs pacing in circles. Restless. Itâs been days since the last mission. Days since you sprained your ankle and Bob almost helped you.
Almost.
The sound of that one step he took toward you is burned into your skull. You heard it. Saw the flicker of concern in his expression. The way he looked like he might finally say something. But he didnât. Again.
Instead, Bucky helped you. Like he always does.
And maybe youâre just exhaustedâmentally, emotionally, physicallyâbut tonight, as the pain pulses dully through your foot and frustration simmers in your chest, you decide youâve had enough.
Youâre done letting Bob hide behind silence.
You leave the med bay the moment your foot can bear weight and stalk the halls with too much purpose for someone supposed to be recovering. You know exactly where heâll be. The observation deck. He always retreats there after missions, like heâs hoping the stars will answer something the rest of you canât.
Sure enough, you spot him through the glass, silhouetted in the cool blue glow of the night sky beyond. Hood up. Shoulders hunched. Like the worldâs sitting on his back.
He doesnât hear you enter. Or maybe he does and chooses not to turn.
You stop a few feet behind him.
âWhy do you keep avoiding me?â
His shoulders stiffen.
No greeting. No pleasantries. You donât have the patience for any of it.
He doesnât turn.
You take another step closer. âSeriously, Bob. What the hell did I do to make you act like Iâm some kind of ghost?â
Nothing.
You force a breath. Your voice cracks. âYou used to be my best friend.â
That finally gets him. Slowly, he turns, the hood dropping back just enough to let you see the guilt carved into his features. He looks tired. Paler than usual. And yet somehow still impossible to read.
âIâm not avoiding you,â he says, too quiet to be convincing.
You scoff. âBullshit. You canât even look me in the eye anymore. I try to talk to you, you bolt. I reach for the popcorn and you practically teleport away. You leave the room when I sit down. You change training shifts to avoid me.â
âI didnât mean toââ
âYou didnât mean to, or you didnât want to be around me?â
He winces. His mouth opens like he wants to explain. But nothing comes out.
You hate how much it hurts.
âDo you hate me now?â you ask, voice barely above a whisper.
He jolts. âWhat?â
âJust tell me,â you snap, covering your pain with anger. âIf I did something wrongâif I messed this up somehowâjust say it.â
âYou didnât,â he says, fast, desperate. âYou didnât mess anything up.â
âThen why?â Youâre breathing harder now. âWhy did you just⊠drop me? You let me think I was crazy for feeling the distance when you were the one building it!â
âI had to,â he mutters.
You step closer. âWhy?â
He shakes his head. âItâs complicated.â
âNo, itâs not. You either care or you donât.â
âI do care,â he blurts, suddenly louder, voice cracking like thunder off the glass.
Silence falls between you. Heavy. Fragile.
You blink. âThen why do you treat me like I donât exist?â
Bob runs both hands through his hair, pacing away from you, then back, like heâs coming apart.
âBecause itâs easier than wanting something I canât have,â he finally breathes.
You stare.
He exhales like heâs been holding that in for months. âYou and Bucky⊠I see the way you look at him. I hear the way you talk to him. I thought maybe if I backed off, I could deal with it. But every time I see you with him, itâs like my ribs are caving in.â
Youâre stunned.
âBobââ
âAnd then Val calls you âlovebirds,â and you donât deny it. You blushed. I thoughtâŠâ He trails off, swallowing hard. âI thought I missed my chance. That Iâd already messed it up. And if I couldnât be what you wanted, the least I could do was get out of your way.â
Your voice comes out gentler. âYou thought I was with Bucky?â
âArenât you?â
You stare at him. âNo. Of course not.â
He blinks. âBut youâre always with him. Laughing. Whispering. You lean on him.â
âBecause he listens. Because you wouldnât.â
âI was trying to protect myself.â
âAnd I was trying to understand why the person I care about most started treating me like a stranger!â
That lands like a punch. Bobâs shoulders sag. He looks like heâs about to fold in on himself.
You step forward. Hesitate. Then place a hand on his chestâjust over his heart.
âYou idiot,â you whisper. âYou really thought I wanted Bucky?â
Bob doesnât answer. His eyes are wide, vulnerable. Your touch stills him completely.
âI wanted you.â You say it quietly. Gently. Like itâs the simplest truth in the world.
He exhales shakily. His hands twitch at his sides, then liftâhesitant, slowâas if heâs terrified touching you might break the moment.
But when he finally presses his palm over yours, the tension breaks.
Neither of you says a word for a long time.
Then, finally, he leans forward, forehead resting against yours, breath shallow.
âIâm sorry,â he murmurs.
You close your eyes.
âI missed you,â you whisper.
His breath hitches. âI never stopped.â
You werenât planning on sitting next to him. Not really. You told yourself youâd play it cool. Casual. Normal. You were going to walk in, nod politely, and take your usual spot next to Bucky like the last three weeks.
But tonight⊠you hesitate at the door.
Bobâs already there. Hood down, for once. Jacket draped over the back of the couch. Heâs wearing that old faded band tee you once teased him aboutâthe one you said made him look like a roadie, not a superhero. And heâs looking around the room like heâs searching for something.
For someone.
Your pulse kicks up.
Yelenaâs on the far couch, legs tucked under her, already spoon-deep into a pint of ice cream. Johnâs half asleep in the armchair with a beer balanced precariously on his thigh. Ava is floating just above the beanbag pile, watching the screen like sheâs trying to decipher code. Buckyâs leaning against the back wall with crossed arms, waiting to see where you sit before he picks a seat.
And Bob⊠Bob catches your eye and doesnât look away.
Not for a second.
Itâs nothing like before.
Thereâs no flinching. No retreat. Just that soft, unsure gravity youâd missed so badly.
Your feet move before you think about it. You take the empty spot beside him like itâs the most natural thing in the world.
It feels terrifying.
And then Bob shifts, ever so slightly, to give you more space. Or maybe to meet you halfway. His thigh brushes yours. He doesnât pull back.
You glance sideways. His fingers twitch against the blanket on his lap.
Yelena lets out an exaggerated gasp.
âOh my God.â
You freeze.
John jerks upright. âWhat?â
Bucky just huffs a quiet chuckle and takes the nearest beanbag. âTook them long enough.â
You blink. âWhat are youââ
âOh, please,â Yelena drawls. âThis has been a six-act drama and weâre finally at the resolution. Do not deny me this.â
Bob lets out a groan and sinks lower into the couch.
Val, from somewhere in the hallway, calls out without even looking in: âIf anyone makes out during the opening credits, Iâm kicking you off the mission roster.â
You bury your face in your hands.
Bob coughs into a laugh beside you.
Bucky leans over and mutters, âSo, whenâs the wedding?â
You elbow him, face burning.
Bobâs hand brushes yoursâlight, hesitantâand then doesnât move. Fingers barely touching. Like a promise heâs still too shy to make out loud.
The movie starts. Everyone settles.
You stay exactly where you are, shoulder to shoulder with the man you thought you lost. The man who is still here.
And even with the teasing, the knowing glances, and the smug looks from across the roomâyouâre smiling.
Finally.

going over easy

pairing: bob reynolds x powered!thunderbolts!fem!reader
summary: two of the same. after breaking through inital barriers, you and the sentry appear to be inseperable, a pull almost forcing you two to each other. the strength of that pull has been getting pretty testy recently, and the two of you begin to wonder who you are to the other.
warnings/info: nsfw and mdni warning by the end of the fic, ill section off that part if you just wanna read the cutey parts, veryyyyyyy soft sex, no use of y/n, this bob is gonna be a little different from how i see him in a lot of other fics so disclaimer about that ig, but dw he's still very soft and sweet, oral sex and fingering (f!receiving), self depreciation on readers side, lots of my headcanons are gonna shine through here, reader is powered as well (yes that is gonna play into this lol) and is less of a blank slate than usual (aka shes kinda side rip), a scene in the void so we can know reader a little more and just for plot purposes lol, bob's powers are gonna be limited to whatever we saw showcased in thunderbolts so please dont get picky if somethings comic inaccurate thanks, its bob so ofc theres a little bit of angst too but dw this is very fluffy as well we love being well rounded lol
word count: 13.3k
notes: so guess who's obsessed with thunderbolts now.....and guess what half of the reasoning is.....if your guess was a man YOUD BE RIGHT!!!! i had to write for him ofc, i put a steve harrington fic on pause for this i had to jump on it lol. one thing i will say about bob fics that annoy me is that ofc everyone turns bob into a cutesy pootsy uwu boy which, hate me or whatever, he is NOTTTTT to me, that man was so sassy and sarcastic in the vault (to walker especially lol) so i wanted that to come out a little more here while still being his naturally sweet and soft self. i go a little bit into 2016 mcu fandom mode on some of the early character descriptions and relationships BUT CAN YOU BLAME A GIRL CAUSE IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE BACK, I JUST HAD TO </3. i also didnt proofread this cause yet again its like 1am when im posting this and im so tired so if you catch anything uhhhh my bad lol. anyways this is standard to most of my other fics, so have fun lol enjoy!!!

You always overcooked your eggs. It was part of your routine at this point in your life. As a kid, your irrationally large fear of getting salmonella caused you to force your mom to always burn your eggs, chicken, and other foods of the sorts. It didn't even taste bad to you. It was all you had ever known. Uncomfortable, but natural. You scooped the rubbery eggs out of the pan and onto your plate while you attempted to squirt whatever ketchup you could out of the bottle. Taking your lunch, you leaned on the kitchen island and stared out of the sweeping windows of The Watchtower.
Valentina finding you was complicated. On one hand, you were out of the hell hole of a compound you called a home. However though, her manipulation paired with constant missions and training proved to be its own task entirely. And still with all that, your mind had a knack for traveling back to that dark, damp room. Like a looming threat over your head that if you ever messed up, that's where you would return.
That fear pushed you for the past few years. You worked till your bones cracked fixing up Valentina's messes. It was monotonous, but you had convinced yourself to be grateful for the opportunity to become something more with what you had. You had a special gift after all. Thrusted onto you, sure, but Valentina said that it meant you were worth something now. A living shield and sword. Each time you got hit, your body was able to process the kinetic energy into physical blasts. Meaning dodging an attack was actually bad form on your part. So you got hit. A lot. Most days you'd stumble back to your apartment, knocked in the head so silly you didn't know what was up or down.
But it was good work. Kept you busy. That was until Valentina attempted to have you assassinated, trying to tie up all her loose ends. That's all you were to her at the end of the day. A fly on the way she had to clean up before her guests arrived. Turns out though, she had lots of other flies on the walls, who would in fact turn their forces against her, becoming the world's New Avengers in the process.
One of Yelena's first personal tasks on the job was to find any other lost associates of Valentina. Lucky for you, you fell right into that category. After proving yourself physically capable and trustworthy to her and the rest of the team, you eventually joined as an official member. Your rise to glory had been long and tough, but man was the view from the top nice.
As you grew closer with each of the teammates, you noticed each of their little knick-knacks. Yelena was very easy to let you in, almost like she was begging to share herself with someone else. She must've gotten it from her father, Alexei. He didn't take anything more than four hours to warm up to you. The other three went at a much slower pace, Ava and you eventually bonding over your mutual teasing for Walker, who you made sure knew it was all in good fun. Bucky was last, but it seemed thats how he was with most people. You let him take his time, which seemed to work well in the end. All of them had made their way.
Well. Almost.
Bob was kind of a weird guy. He was kind of an Avenger? But not really? If anything, he was more of their dog that would show up to public appearances with you and the team, but never missions. He spent most of his time lounging around or cleaning up the Watchtower, or in sessions with his therapist. He was always looming around, but kept a specific distance. Mainly physical. Whenever you'd seem to be about to brush by him, he'd scatter away, like a cat who got spooked. You had talked to Yelena about it before, but she said to just give him his time. That this was probably natural after his "incident" a few months back.
You weren't in New York for it, but it of course was on the news everywhere. How a sea of black ink had devoured the city and all of its civilians in their own personalized trauma nightmare. Something you were secretly grateful to have missed. You knew exactly what you'd see if you were in there.
In the recent time of your arrival, you had managed to find and take up your role in your little group. Their own little weird mage, banned from making food for anyone but yourself. No one else liked your burnt food, big shocker.
As you wrapped up with said burnt lunch, you took your plate and utensils to the sink, as a pair of bare feet patted into the room. "Good morning sleepyhead," you called out, knowing who they belonged to already. "Morning's a bit of a stretch, it's like what, 1:30 already?" Bob replied, mid yawn. "I told you guys to start forcing me up earlier," he complained. "Yeah yeah, but Yelena says it's good for you. Your body needs its rest after the serum treatment," you retorted. "Doesn't..." he paused mid sentence to check his sleep tracker on his watch. "....14 hours seem like a little much?" "Hey, your body's gonna take what it needs," you said, finally turning around to face him. He was wearing his usual lounge outfit, a gigantic, comically oversized t-shirt and sweatpants. His body had grown incredibly sensitive to touch after the serum, so the less fabric tightening down on him, the better.
Bob gave a half smile to your comment and attempted to wipe the drowsiness off his face. "You can leave that for me, it's fine," Bob commented, as you took the dish soap and drizzled it over your dirty plate and pan. "I don't mind, I'm already here anyways," you insisted, turning on the tap. Bob sighed and shrugged his shoulders backwards in an attempt to wake his body up. "Alright, but I'm taking charge on the stovetop," he insisted, walking over to your area.
Something must've been in the air today, because this was the most Bob had talked to you in a while, and this was definitely the closest he had stood near you ever before. His presence was a sweet one, as he himself was a sweet guy. You had seen it in the way he acted with everyone else. You knew it probably had to deal with the fact that you were the newcomer, a different face than what he was used to, but you wanted to badly to have something that close with him too. A deep, lingering jealousy had proved to be a close friend of yours when you would see how he would act with John or Yelena compared to how he would act with you.
Hopefully, this was a step in the right direction.
"You know where the others went?" Bob almost immediately asked.
Or maybe not.
"Downstairs in a meeting with Valentina. I got a pass to skip on this one." In the last meeting you had been to, Bucky had to hold you down before you had the chance to blast her smug smirk off her face.
Bob made a hum in acknowledgment. "Can I ask you something?" He nodded, which you caught out of the corner of your eye. "How do you feel about....her?" Bob paused for a moment.
When Yelena had told you Valentina was at majority blame for The Void Incident, you had no doubt in believing it. You didn't know how the others were so okay with it, but Ms. de Fontaine being your boss still unsettled you. You didn't like the idea that she was still overseeing all of your actions and controlling how you were supposed to be acting towards the public. Especially after the shit she's pulled. Once Yelena explained the situation, about the blackmail shock collar the team had on her if she ever took anything too far, you felt a little more at ease about it. But no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't shake off the paranoia about being in this situation with her.
"Fine," Bob responded. You placed the plate down in the sink and turned to face him finally. "That's all you're gonna give me? Fine?" He gave a deep, annoyed sigh. "Well what do you want me to say? That I don't like her? That I don't trust her? That she's the reason I'm like this now and when it didn't go the way she planned, she killed me? Hmm?" You froze a little bit. You hadn't seen this side of him before. The team said it came out a little bit when he would go "Sentry-Mode" (a name made on Alexei's part). You sighed and went back to washing your dish. Bob rubbed his face again. "Sorry, I just thought it was pointless to state the obvious." You smirked a little bit. "Well that's one thing right. Just trying to fill the air I guess." "I know....sorry, that was mean." There's the Bob you know. Always apologizing. "You're good."
The air was stuffy with a tension for the next few minutes while you cleaned the kitchen. Up until a wet glass plate slipped out of your hands and crashed onto the floor, shattering into a billion little pieces. Bob flinched at the sound, on the other side of the island wiping down the counter. You froze and chuckled to yourself a bit. "Woah, you okay?" he asked, concerned. "Yeah, yeah, just a bit of a ditz today," you said, wiping your hand across your face. "You're good, just stay where you are for a sec, I don't want you to get any in your feet," Bob warned, going into first responder mode as he assessed the situation. "I wanna try this out for a second," he insisted.
You watched closely and stilly, as Bob took a deep breath in, closed his eyes, and put his hands out. Suddenly, the glass shards around your feet jittered and lifted into the air slowly, as Bob opened his eyes and guided them to the trash can. Once he was done, he released his breath and dropped his hands. "Well look at mister big shot powers over here!" you cheered. "Bucky let you start practicing again recently?" "Yeah, a little bit here and there just so I don't go overboard again," he blushed a light pink. "Keep it up," you smiled at him.
Before you took another step, you looked down at the ground and noticed a particularly large piece of glass. "Oops, looks like you missed one hot-rod." "Shit, sorry, let me try one more time," he said closing his eyes again. "No no, don't worry, it's fine, I'll just pick this one up," you insisted, reaching down to pick it up. "No, wait, you'll cut yourself!" Bob shouted, almost running over to reach you. "Bob, it's fine I pro-."
As Bob's hand grabbed onto your wrist, you felt a spike of shivers roll down your arm. The first time he had made contact with you, and his hands were so soft....
You couldn't focus on it for long though, looking up and seeing a face of pure horror on Bob's face. You looked at him confused. You were quick to join him though as streams of black slithered across the floor and over your eyes. The last thing you remember was Bob's hand ripping off your wrist, desperately called out your name as the shadows took his place.
~~~~~
Your eyes peeled open, as you tried to assess your surroundings after the chaos. It was eerily quiet, a leaky faucet dripping as the only sound. The room was dark, damp, and cold. Concrete floors and walls, a chamber pot in the corner, and a cot with a wrinkled, thin blanket shoved against the wall. After your eyes adjusted to the darkness, you saw her. The lone decoration of the room. A poster of 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's, Audrey Hepburn's face faded and discolored with time. The more you stared, the more you recognized this room. You knew where you were. And worst of all, you knew exactly what day this was.
With almost perfect timing, the metal door slide open with angry force. Three armored men burst into the room, as you heard something shuffle itself across the floor. You didn't even notice her at first.
A girl, shoved up into the corner of the wall, head hanging over the chamber pot as she wiped the bile off her mouth. Your memory was fuzzy, but she couldn't have been older than 17 at the time. With short, flat, oily, botched up hair. Wires were bursting out of her neck and down her back, connecting her to a running machine in the wall for vitals.
You. An older one.
The most notable feature was her frame. You would expect someone in this situation to look malnourished, seconds away from death. On the contrary, uncanny muscles were bulging out of her arms and upper back, like they were clawing to be let out. A product of the treatment, like a sumo wrestler on steroids.
The men rushed over to that version of you, ripping the wires out of her neck and latching on a power damper collar in their place. That collar itself was an omen. Can't torture the girl who can absorb the pain and shoot it back out. You'd just be throwing fuel onto the fire.
They forced younger you up to your feet as their superior walked into your room. You could feel your heart stop in your chest as you searched in desperation for a way out. You called out for Bob, Yelena, anyone at all. Almost like your mind was in tune with your decisions, the metal door slammed shut just before you could run out. You leaned your head on the door, not bearing to look, barely standing to listen.
Your old superior examined younger you and the rest of the room, the poster in particular. He smiled sadistically at it. "A real stunner she was, eh?" You scoffed at his words while younger you darted her eyes away. In one swift movement, he ripped the poster down to reveal a makeshift hole halfway into the wall. Your escape route. Taking a deep breath, you finally turned around to face the incoming carnage.
"You think you're smart huh?" the man asked her. Younger you tilted her head up, looking him straight in the eyes, too worn down to care what would happen to her. He smirked. Her silence was enough of an answer. He snapped at his employees, one of them slamming the butt of his gun into her temple in response. You couldn't help but flinch.
The superior slide open the metal door again, as his pawns dragged her unconscious body out the door, while you closely followed. The harsh hospital lights left a sting to your eyes as you traveled through your mind's endless hallways. Finally, you reached the chamber. The door slide open to reveal a dentist chair and an array of instruments littered throughout the room.
The men placed her down into the chair, one of them injecting a serum into her arm to wake her up. Younger you shot awake, pulled down by different leather restraints. Bile filled your mouth as you were reduced to being so helpless to just watch. A doctor followed into the room soon after the six of you, his face burned into your mind.
He took two long prongs, pinching them onto the skin of her elbow, and turned on a machine to send out electrical shocks. After a signal from the commander, he sent out the first wave. You couldn't help but turn your head away, holding back your own tears as phantom pains of remembrance ripped through your skin.
The worst part of all of this was how younger you barely struggled at all, only letting out blood curdling screams of pain. She had accepted her fate hours ago, knowing this was inevitable. Why fight it. It would only make it worse. It made you sick to your stomach. How much she had given up at this point.
A pause in the shocks. You turned your head back to see the commander walking up to the girl, sticking his face down to her's. "You knew this was going to happen?" The girl nodded her head slowly, with the energy she had left. He scoffed. "Then you're dumber than I thought." He stepped back again and signaled for the second wave.
Not baring to take it again, you went against your own judgement and rushed between the men, ripping the prongs off of the girl's body. You met her eyes for a split second.
Behind the numbness, you could see her fear. Roaring underneath the surface.
Before you could sense the rest, you felt a slam into your own temple, knocking you down to the floor. You looked up to see all the men looking at you now, the first time they had done so. The commander pushed past them, staring you down. He crouched down to your level, pushing a stray hair back behind your ear as you shuddered. "Still the same dumb girl I see," he smirked.
In a split second, he grabbed your arm, attaching one of the prongs to it, as the still working machine sent hundreds of volts into your arm in a split second, slicing through your nerves.
~~~~
Before you had time to react to the pain, your body in the real world roared back to life, as you screamed and coughed to catch your breath. You found yourself sitting down in the middle of the kitchen as your hands scrambled all over the ground as you hyperventilated, trying to ground yourself. "Woah, woah, woah, easy, I got you, you're safe now!" You looked up and finally noticed Yelena sitting on the ground in front of you. She had both hands placed on your shoulders, looking deep into your eyes to help you center yourself. You frantically looked around the room, finding the other team members close by, staring at you. Eventually, you found Bob, walking out of the room with Bucky close on his tail. You wanted to talk to him, knowing he was probably upset too, but you had bigger things on your mind.
"I.....I..." You couldn't get the words out. Before you could try again, Yelena softly pulled you into a hug, that you returned very quickly. "You're good now, okay?" she asked. You nodded gently into her shoulder. With more deep breaths and a few tears, you eventually were brought back down. You pulled out of the hug, and began to stand on your feet.
"Yelena, I told you I needed the team up to the helicopter deck in five minutes, do you guys take pleasure in disobeying me or wha-." Valentina bursted out of the elevator, rambling on about what they were probably discussing in the meeting. She only paused after noticing the obvious tension in the room. She looked at you, hunched over and mascara running down your face. "Well what happened to you this time?"
~~~~~~~
The ambient blue glow of the tv washed over your face, as your eyes glazed over the screen. In the few hours since the incident, the team decided it was best for you to sit out on this mission. So you had cooped yourself up in your room, trying anything to distract your mind from going back to that place. Every now and again, you'd hear light pacing footsteps in the hallway outside your door.
You hadn't spoken to Bob since you went under. He hadn't made any attempts to apologize yet. Yelena said it would probably take some time and she would talk to him as soon as she got back. You didn't want to wait until then to make things right, but knowing how fragile both of you were at the moment, you didn't want to accidentally make anything worse.
When the footsteps finally stopped, you sat up a little bit in your bed. Three soft knocks followed. You paused. "Come in." It wasn't him.
Ava gave you a soft "Hi" before stepping inside and closing the door behind her. "How was the mission?" you asked her. She shrugged her shoulders. "More of the same really, you didn't miss much." She gave a little hop onto your bed, laying down on her stomach next to you. "How you feeling?" You gave a little sigh to her. "A little better. I just think I need time." She nodded at your response, and gently held your hand. "You need me, you know where to find me, okay?" You smiled and nodded at her kind gesture. Ava put up a front with the rest of the time, teasing many of the others and acting nonchalant. But something else came out in her around you. That little girl, normally shoved under years of pain and killing.
"Can I ask you something?" you asked her. "Of course." You took a deep breath in and looked her in the eye. "Back when....he took over New York, what did you see?" Ava took a minute to think to herself. "Well, I went through three different rooms to find Bob and Yelena at the center." You adjusted yourself to a more comfortable, open position, trying to create a more welcoming energy in the room as Ava got vulnerable with you. "First room was with my parents and how I got....this way." She took off one of her gloves from her suit, showing her hand phasing between multiple quantum planes at once. A painful experience, she described it as. "Second room was one of my first missions with S.H.I.E.L.D., I had to take out an unarmed doctor."
She twiddled with her fingers, looking down as she picked at the nails. "Last one was a fight I had with an old friend.....he was trying to protect me from....myself I guess....said a lot of things I regret." You frowned down at her, placing a hand on her back to rub it in condolences. "That Bill guy you were talking about earlier, right?" She nodded. "But anyways, I've learned not to dwell on it anymore. My life is different now." She looked up at you. "All of ours are now." You nodded in acknowledgment.
"We're never gonna let those bastards get you again. Can you trust me on that?" She held your face between her hands. You nodded. She looked at you deeper. "I can. All of you," you verbalized. She sat up and pulled you in tightly for a hug. Ava was your best friend. You could trust her more than anyone else here on that.
As she pulled away, she cleared her throat. "Can I ask you a question now?" You nodded. "Do you blame Bob for what happened?"
You took a second.
"No." Ava raised an eyebrow at you. "I really don't." "Okay good, just making sure." You smiled at her. "Is Yelena talking to him?" "She's gonna try to at least," Ava sighed. "He's gonna be like this for a while. Scampery, avoidant. We've learned it's best to let him work through it." You nodded. "But he's gonna be okay, right?" Ava looked up at you, slight confusion in her eyebrows. "Yeah....." You nodded. "Okay....good."
Ava sat in silence for a little bit. "You care more about him being okay than you being okay?" You looked at her, clogs turning in your mind. "When you put it like that, I guess." She looked even more confused now. "Why?"
.....
"I don't know."
~~~~~~~
The next few days were spent with you trying to answer that question for yourself. You and Bob's relationship before this was never a super close one. You always naturally kept a distance from each other. It didn't make much of a difference if things went back to normal from this or not. So why did it matter? Why did it matter if he started talking to you again? Because man did you want him to again. And badly too.
It was like he was playing a prank on you at this point. Every time you would enter a room he was in too, he would find some excuse to leave, leaving you with a sour taste in your mouth. You knew the other team members noticed it too, because you would see one of them usually follow out of the room with him to confront him. You didn't want him to take the blame for this. You knew he was just taking this healing stage at his own pace. But man did you just wish his pace would go a little faster.
At least he wouldn't go on missions with you guys, then you'd really be screwed.
You tended to forget a very important fact because of that.
"Val needs you all downstairs in an hour, there's that press conference about the rebranding today." You could hear Mel talking to the group from your cracked bedroom door. You had been snooping in there, since Bob was in the control room outside with everyone else. "Bob, she wants you there too this time, says the more members there in support, the better."
Shit.
You could hear his whiny groan from your room. "Do I have to?" "Unless you wanna tell Val yourself." That must've been a huge wake up call for him, cause you could hear him rush your way to his room to get ready. He made split second eye contact with you before closing the door. Your heart almost broke with the swiftness his eyes darted away.
You closed your door and started getting ready yourself before you had to take orders from anyone. Most press meetings required a more casual, business attire. Ones like this however, required full glam, full hair, and full costume. You were particularly fast at the getting ready process, especially since you didn't have a thousand gun holsters you had to fasted on, unlike your other team members.
Your costume was also fairly simple. With the nature of your powers, your previous suits had a knack for getting the sleeves torn off, so you decided to replace that design with a simple, black, mock neck bodysuit. Your pants were standard black cargo pants, multiple pockets in case you needed any physical weapons on you in an emergency. They were tied off with a pair of heavy duty combat boots.
For press conferences, Valentina usually requested you to go the most glam with hair and makeup out of the group, since the other two girls were slightly opposed to it. So once that was finally done, you walked out of your room into the control deck, ready to go.
You usually sat there for a good amount of time by yourself, until one of the guys would join you. But this time, Yelena was the first one out after you, albeit half dressed, in the middle of doing her eyeliner, and a makeup bag in her hand.
She looked at you, slightly distressed. "What's up?" you asked. She clenched her teeth. "You're gonna say no, I know it." "Can you just ask me?" She took in a deep sigh. "Can you help Bob with his hair and makeup?" It took every bone in your body not to burst out laughing at her request.
For Valentina and the press, everyone in the tower had to be dressed up. Including the guys. Not too much, but some to cover up most of their "tough guy" looks. Almost like a stage makeup of sorts. The stylists you guys had were always wrangled up with Alexei and Walker, always opposed to the idea and needing extra support, so Yelena would take care of Bob's and Bucky would handle his own.
"I'm already running behind and Val wants Barnes and I down early to practice responses." You looked at her, baffled. "And Ava can't do it?" Yelena raised her eyebrows at you. "It's a miracle Ava can do her own." True, unfortunately. "Yelena, you're kidding me right?" She walked closer to the couch you were sitting at. "He's a grown man, can't he do it himself?" "Yes, but unfortunately he's also a very slow learner too." You shook your head to yourself. "Have you even been in the tower for the past week, he won't even look at me right now," you whispered. She sighed to herself. "I know I know, and this would be a one time thing I promise, I just really need the help right now."
You leaned back into the couch and washed your hands over your face. "And not to be an instigator, but I think it would help you two also." You snorted at her sentence, taking your hands off your eyes to see how serious her face was. You took a deep breath and thought it over for a second or two. "Fine," you gave her, deadpanned. "But you owe me so much right now." Yelena let out a sigh of relief. "I really do, thank you." She dropped the makeup bag, presumably filled with the tools you'd need, in your lap, and bolted towards her room.
~~~~~
The door to the room loomed over your head, seemingly getting taller with every passing second you stood in front of it. Biting the bullet, you finally gave four slight knocks on his door, the same knock Yelena used for all of you. Yes, it was a bit of a trick, but you knew he wouldn't have let you in otherwise. You heard a soft, kind "Come in" from the other side of the door that made your heart warm up ever so slightly. You took a deep breath, and slowly opened the door. Your heart froze up again when you saw the way his smile dropped when you walked in. He was dressed in his usual attire for conferences, a pressed, slightly too big for him, tuxedo with dress shoes. But of course, his hair was in its natural, shaggy mess and you could spot any upcoming pimples from a mile away. Your job for the afternoon.
"What ar-" "Before you kick me out can I explain!" you jumped in before he could interject. He waited a second before nodding. "Yelena had to go downstairs early and doesn't have the time to get you ready, and before you ask, yes everyone else is too busy, and yes, I am your last resort."
His eyes darted away from you and to the ground, the most of an invitation over as you were gonna get. You took a seat on his partially made bed, observing the rest of his room. It took you a second to remember that you've never been in here before. It was a lot cleaner than you expected it to be. Then again, he spent almost all of his time in the tower, so he had a lot more time to clean than the rest of you did.
There were scattered band posters on the dark blue walls of the room, and a few collected rocks lying on his T.V. stand. You opened up the bag and took out his hair gel first. Val liked his long, overgrown hair to be slicked back for press events. You squirted some of the gel on your hands and lathered it deep into them.
When you went for his hair though, he moved his head slightly back away from you. You immediately put your hands down in response. "Okay, let's get this straight now," you snapped. "I get you're mad at me for whatever reason, but I'm not gonna take this from you right now, especially when I'm trying to help you. So either grow the fuck up, or you can do it yourself, okay?" His eyes widened a little bit. You were never the mean type towards anyone on the team, but when your limits were tested like this, you had no choice but to respond.
Putting back any feelings he had, he straightened up and leaned closer into you. "Thank you," you responded. "I'll be quick, I promise. Out of your bubble in no time." Your hands tangled into his hair, pushing the light brown strands back in straight lines. Before it would get tangled in by the gel, you could feel how soft his hair was. Even if it was overgrown, you could tell he took pride in it.
As you pushed his hair back into a makeshift mullet, making sure the gel wasn't ruining his curls at the bottom, you noticed something. Just out of your peripherals, you could see his eyes, darting every which way. They couldn't stay still for more than a second. Sometimes they would be at your shoulders, at your legs, your hair. Most of the time though, they were trying to find where you weren't. But each time, they would land magnetically back to you.
You couldn't help but let out a little laugh to yourself, a little breath out of your nose. "What?" Bob reflexively asked. You smiled and shook your head. "I really don't get you, man." His brows furrowed. "What's that supposed to mean?" Finally finished with his hair, you untangled your hands and brought them back to you, his eyes following them. "Bob, you're scared shitless of me."
A glow of pink wiped over his cheeks. "N-no I'm not." You laughed right in his face, as you went into the makeup bag and pulled out primer, foundation, and concealer. You squeezed lines of primer from the bottle onto his face. Before you could use your hands to rub it in though, he quickly grabbed your wrist again. Same way as before. You froze for a second before you realized, nothing was happening. You weren't going back in. You realized why when you looked at Bob's face, focused now more than you had ever seen before.
Your face and demeanor softened. "Bob." His face turned to yours, fear glazing over his eyes, trying desperately to keep the void from taking you again. You took his calloused fingers in your hands, peeling them away from your wrist and holding it with your own. You looked into his deep blue eyes, almost lost in them.
"I'm not scared of you."
His breath shook at your words, and you could've sworn you saw his eyes slightly water up. "I never have been. And I don't plan on changing that." The tension in his body melted away at those magic words. His lips pursed inwards as he looked down at your hands intertwined. "Can you trust me on that?" He gave a slight nod to you. You took his chin to your hand and pulled it up to look at you. His eyes were fully watery now. "Can you?" It took him a second.
".....I can."
You smiled at him.
"Thank you," he whispered. You closed your eyes and nodded to him. "You're welcome." The two of you sat for a moment like this, hands tangled in each other and observing each other's faces. You noticed how large his hands were. You never really considered your hands as small either, so the fact they were still much bigger than yours surprised you. They were restless as well, constantly moving between your own fingers, like they were getting a feel for how yours were. This was the most you had ever seen him before, in more ways than one.
Eventually, you let his hand go and cleared your throat. "Let's get you ready now, I'd rather avoid an earful from Val after the conference." Bob nodded and sat up straight again, as you rubbed the primer into his face with your thumbs. His slightly stubbled chin tickled the pads of your fingers in an almost hypnotic notion. Before you even knew it, your hands were staying caressing his face. Bob didn't seem to mind it, his eyes slowly closing, and even leaning his face into your touch further.
The two of you immediately snapped out of it at the sound of Bob's door slamming open. Mel stood at the door, panting, hand leaning against the frame for support. "What the hell is taking so long?" she asked frantically. "Uhhhhhh." The lack of an answer you two could come up with only angered her more. She rolled her eyes and pointed to you. "Get downstairs, I'll finish up with him." You looked back to Bob, smiled, gave his cheek a quick pat as you stood up and walked out the door.
Before Mel closed the door behind you, you caught Bob's eyes, hypnotically following you. As if he was searching for you. For more.
~~~~~~
Something shifted between the two of you after that day. No more avoidance. You found Bob coming to you for anything now. Whether he was having one of his bad days, needed help cleaning something up, or even if he just wanted to watch a movie with someone. Equally, you found yourself going to him for almost anything. Almost.
The main difference between the two of you was Bob had told you everything about him. You knew him like a book. Every page studied and memorized. But when he would ask you something about your past, you always managed to slither out of the question. You didn't mean to be so secretive around him. It was more of a reflex at this point. You'd done it with everyone. He was included in that group.
You could tell it hurt him though. Knowing there was some part of you that either didn't trust him enough to know, or maybe just didn't want him to know at all. Hopefully with time you'd be able to open up, not just to him, to everyone. But that's all the two of you could do for now. Hope.
A sign of that coming close had finally appeared, a new impulse crossing your mind. Dating.
For obvious reasons, relationships had never been a top priority for you. But as things were slowing down in your life, you began to feel left out of the "dating in NYC" craze. Without much experience under your belt, you decided to go through the dating app route. That proved to be more challenging than you thought. "I don't think men on here have ever had a conversation with a woman before," you'd complain to Bob or Ava constantly, usually followed by a large eye roll from them.
Lightning seemed to have struck though. On your way home from grocery shopping, you managed to bump into a guy at your bus stop. It was something straight out of a movie, the way the wind knocked of your cap and he had managed to catch it for you. The two of you spent the entire bus ride talking, and he eventually asked you for your number once you reached your stop. Tonight was date night. He had planned a special dinner in the city, and the two of you would go dancing after.
"Are you sure this guy's not like some stalker or something? You are a superhero after all, there's weird fans all over the city," Ava protested. Her and Bob were sitting in your room as you got ready. She sat on your light yellow beanbag on the floor, tossing a crumpled up paper with the address to the restaurant on it into the air. Bob was laying down on your bed, extra quiet today for some reason, staring up at the ceiling.
"He's not, I promise, Bob saw him too, he can vouch for me," you waved her off, looking in your mirror trying to do your makeup. You could see Ava look to Bob behind you through the mirror. She raised her eyebrow at him, which he just shrugged off. "I'd just prefer you not get kidnapped tonight, so try to avoid that if you can," she turned back to you. "Ava, if he's a normal citizen, I'll have zero problems defending myself, if anything happens," you defended. You sprayed some setting spray onto your face, and got up to change into your outfit.
Your bedroom had an attached bathroom, so you went in there to change. Once you closed the door, you took off your current sweats and baggy turtleneck sweater and slipped on your outfit. Your date asked you to go a little more formal than normal first date, so you specially picked out your outfit from your closet: a black boat-neckline midi dress, with a little thigh slit for less formal environments. It was gifted to you a few years back, but you hadn't worn it since. There was one glaring issue you noticed.
Throughout your time in the lab, you had obviously developed some scars. You didn't mind most of them, being electrocution scars, which made for some pretty cool war stories. Photoshoot photographers were particular fans of those. Some scars, however, weren't exactly your favorites. The specific one being a thick, prominent scar, starting at your right collarbone and trailing up to the back of your neck. It was fairly recent, compared to the rest of your scars, so the fading process was far from beginning. It was part of the reason you stuck to turtleneck fashion so much. But with this dress here, it was finally out in the open, something you weren't so sure you were comfortable with.
After convincing yourself though, you were willing to bite the bullet if it meant looking all dolled up for once. After a final examination in the bathroom mirror, you took a step out the door to show off to your friends. Both of them seemed to jump back to the positions they were in before you walked into the bathroom, almost like they were gossiping girls before. But once they noticed you, the air in the room stopped.
Ava was the first one to give out a little supportive holler when you stepped out, getting a little giggle from you. "What are you waiting for, give us a twirl!" she shouted. Obliging, you gave a little curtsey and spin. Turning to Bob, you could see a little smile curling up from this mouth. "So, what do you think?" you asked him, hoping for some words out of him today. "You look beautiful. Really really beautiful." There was a slight tint of melancholy in his words. You believed what he said, that was sincere. But his smile was actively lying to you.
His eyes spoke the truth though. You watched him as his eyes traced the way your dress hugged your body, highlighting all the beautiful parts of you, leaving little to the imagination. You saw his eyes stop at your collarbone, and his smile faded away. Just before you could see his mouth open to ask about it, you jumped right in. "Well, I better get going, I don't wanna miss my train," you frantically said, grabbing your kitten heels and strapping them on.
Ava and Bob followed you out of your room and towards the elevator out of the tower. Ava gave you a tight hug, whispering a little "Text me if you think he's a killer," before letting go. Bob's body seemed to stutter a little bit before giving you a hug. He had been more in control of the void spreading through his touch, but he was still cautious over it. His hugs always felt like home. The way he would squeeze you just the right amount and how well your chin fit into the crook of his neck. His hand sat comfortably just above your hips, with always his pinky finger straying a bit lower and tracing your upper thigh. When he let go he stayed close to you for a second, his eyes just slightly lower than where yours were. "Be safe, okay?' he asked with full sincerity. You nodded and let go just before getting into the elevator. "I will."
~~~~~~~
You rested your back against the elevator, back at the tower and up to your room after the long night. You checked your phone for a time. 2:24 am. Hopefully everyone else would be asleep when you got back.
The date wasn't bad. Not at all. In fact, it was one of the better ones you could remember going on. Dinner was nice and you went down to this jazz bar for some dancing. He walked you back to the tower and the two of you even shared a quick kiss.
So why did you feel so....weird? The circumstances were perfect for a second date. You like the guy, you really did. But something about him kept you from getting truly comfortable with him that night. The little things. The way he insisted to the waiter on splitting the bill, the way you had to stop every taxi for the two of you, the way he'd cut off your sentences. The way he couldn't stop looking at the scar poisoning your neck. That one really got you.
Maybe it was just your anxiety highlighting it, but it seemed every time his eyes would trail away from yours, they would land right on that scar. Like he was trying to subconsciously let you know it was there. As if you didn't have to take the work to try and cover it up every day of your life. That irked you most of all. You felt awful about it, it wasn't his fault it was there. But no matter how hard you tried, whenever you thought about going on a second date with him, you couldn't erase the look in his eyes out of your mind.
As you examined it in the mirror in the elevator, the doors slid open to an empty living room and kitchen floor. You wiped the tiredness off of your face and turned on a dim overhead lamp, setting your purse on the kitchen island to grab a quick water bottle. Your ears perked up when you heard some stirring from the couch area. Following the noise arose a head of shaggy brown hair. Your face softened and smile lifted when you saw his head turn around to find you. "Hi," you whispered just loud enough for him to hear. Bob replied with a sleepy "Hey," eyes still lowered.
"Whatcha doing out here, shouldn't you be in bed?" you asked, walking over to the couch. "Couldn't sleep...came out here to city watch and try to get sleepy." Your head turned to the massive windows overlooking the night city, still so alive. Bob let out a small yawn and reached his arm over to where you were standing. You took his hand, allowing him to guide you over to sit next to him on the couch. His position was slouched and comfortable, still half asleep. He rested his head into your shoulder, sending a little nervous shiver into you. "How was it?" he asked, eyes closing. You sighed. "Good." He chuckled under his breath. "What's that for?" you asked, pointing your eyes down to him. "Someone who went on a good date wouldn't just say it was 'good'," he slyly slurred out. Maybe this is why you never see Bob right after he wakes up. This Bob was kind of an asshole.
"What, can I not go on a date that's just 'good'?" you asked, getting slightly mad with him. "Someone as special as you shouldn't have to lower herself to going on dates that are just 'good'." The words trailed off in volume on the way out, almost like he didn't even know they came out in the first place. But you managed to catch them. And they sent butterflies down into your stomach, a pink glow to your cheeks, and a stupid grin to your mouth.
You looked down at him, resting on your shoulder. His body leaned perfectly into yours, filling all the empty space with his own. His delicate hands rested in his lap while his eyelashes tickled the upper parts of his cheek. And his hair, his beautiful hair, curled perfectly at the ends, grazing against the back of your neck with the air of The Watchtower. You could fall asleep with him here for days, in perfect, complete serenity.
"So why was it just 'good'?" he finally asked after what seemed like minutes of silence. You thought to yourself. "Cause I'm not gonna go on a second date." He lifted his head off of your shoulder and looked at him, with a slight concern on his droopy face. "Did something happen?" "No no no, I promise," you quickly shut down the idea. "It's just....." He sat more at attention, rubbing his eyes to try and wake up more. You both turned to look at each other, the sides of your faces resting on the couch cushions. "He was fine, great even....I just...." You tried to find the words to describe what you were feeling. "C'mon honey, talk to me," Bob slipped out, in a deep, sleepy voice that sent waves through you.
"I can't see him being able to deal with me," you finally spoke. "What makes you think that?" You sighed. You sat up a little bit and pulled your hair back behind your neck and lifted up your chin. "You saw this earlier right?" Bob gave a soft hum and a nod in response. "I got this a while back, back when I was still in the labs you saw in my nightmare." His eyes focused in on the scar, trying to make it out with the little light in the room. "I wanted to ask earlier, but I didn't wanna upset you," he spoke. "I know you don't like talking about it." You smiled a little at his ability to know you so well.
"Well, on one of the missions I was sent on back there, I got injured real bad. Broke my clavicle and they could only fix it through surgery. But I wouldn't necessarily call their doctors 'top of the line', so the cleanup was messy." You brushed your hair back onto the scar to cover it up. "One of the many souvenirs they gave me," you attempted to joke. Bob smiled a little bit at it, but was still focused on your skin. "Anyways, I don't like looking at it much, it's one of my uglier scars, and when other people catch it, I can't help but worry about what they're thinking."
"What d'you think he was thinking about?" Bob asked, slouching his head back into the couch to secretly admire you. You slouched back too. "About how much of a piece of work I'm gonna be," you chuckled out, even if the thought made you wanna cry. You could see that same sadness in Bob's eyes as they trailed up to your eyes. You sighed and looked away from him to the window outside. "This is why I don't date," you joked, wiping your face.
"Hey." You looked back at him. "Can I do something I'm gonna regret once I'm more awake?" You raised an eyebrow at the suspicious statement. "Okay." He sat a little closer to you, bringing up a hand to your hair, looking to you for approval. You gave him a soft hum as he pulled the hair behind your neck again, and softly traced his thumb over the scar, leaving goosebumps in its trail.
As gently as he could, he brought his face closer and pressed his lips softly onto your clavicle. Your breath hitched, causing him to bring his face back again. His eyes bore into yours, ready to give an apology if you requested. But your hand encouraged his actions, tangling into the back of his hair and pushing his lips back in.
Bob's lips danced over your scar, as your breath got heavier and hands tugged on his roots in approval. His hands found their way to your hips, caressing you in all the right spots. You fought to keep in any sounds your mouth wanted to let out from his touch. But right as you could feel yourself getting to the good part, Bob placed his final kiss, releasing you as well. You rested your head back as Bob stood up from the couch, lending a hand out to you. "It's late, we can talk more tomorrow, but you need your rest for now." Bob almost seemed to snap out of whatever lustful spell was just over him. Or maybe you took what just happened the wrong way. You tried to process it in your head as you took his hand and stood up with him.
Hand in hand, he led you to your room. As he opened the door and let you inside, he leaned over you on the door frame with one more message: "If a man looks at you and his first thought is of is how much work you'll be, he's no man at all."
~~~~~~~~
His words stuck in your heart for the next few days as the two of you tried to pretend that nothing happened. Drowsy Bob was right, Awake Bob apologized to you profusely the next morning, claiming he had no idea what came over him that night. "....I didn't mind it," you confessed after his apology. Made him blush faster than you thought was humanly possible. After a long, embarrassingly awkward conversation, the two of you decided on an agreement.
Whenever you were feeling bad about yourself, physically specifically, you could go to his room and he'd help you....feel better. You weren't fuck buddies, that was for sure. You just happened to be friends who'd kiss each other's bodies multiple times a week. And it made you absolutely insane.
You couldn't even go to Ava about this, since you and Bob agreed it was best if this was a secretive thing. Truth is, this whole ordeal was making you obsessed with the guy. You couldn't get him out of your head. Him being your roommate only made things worse. You couldn't escape from him. You'd never wanted someone this much before, it was driving you mad.
All the problems in relationships you felt before seemed to disappear with him. Since that night, you found yourself opening up more and more to him. You knew each chapter of each other's lives. And that made you really fucking happy. Having someone you could trust with yourself utterly, wholly, and completely.
The late nights where he'd do nothing but kiss and hold you, like he knew the magic of his touch. But you were greedy. You needed more of him, but all the uncertainty just got in the way.
You knew this wasn't just a thing "friends" did. But not knowing the exact details of how he felt for you kept you from asking for more. What if this was something friends did in his mind? What if the only thing he felt for you was based in lust? You'd rather not have that potentially friendship ruining conversation, so you decided to take the "suffer in silence" route instead.
That wasn't your biggest worry at the moment though. No, that spot in your mind was currently being overshadowed by the bullet wound in your side. You weren't gonna die, your powers would take care of that step for you, but it still hurt like a bullet wound. You'd spent a couple hours on the medbay floor of The Watchtower getting patched up, now on your way up to join the rest of the team.
The minute the elevator doors opened, you were greeted by a giant hug from Alexei, shouting Russian expressions of joy. As endearing as it was, you had to have the rest of the team peel him off of you, as he was two seconds away from opening up your stitches. Once you caught your breath, you greeted the rest of the team, all glad for your recovery. Your smile dropped a little, after scanning the members in the room. "Where's Bob?" you asked. "His therapist wanted to extend his session a little bit today," Bucky answered. You nodded a little to yourself. "You know when he'll be back?" you asked, trying not to sound too needy. "Soon enough," Yelena giggled.
....
"Does he know about..." you gestured to your bandages, slightly pink from any leftover blood. In almost miracle timing, Bob stepped out of the elevator and into your conversation. "Hey, what's-," he started, before looking at you clutching your side. His eyes widened with fear. "Oh my god what happened?!" he shouted, rushing over to you. "It's fine, I'm fine, I just didn't dodge very well today and someone caught me off guard." In combat, you usually tried to avoid the gunslingers and sword masters for hand-to-hand instead. You got more energy from absorbing bullet wounds and cuts, but on a pain scale, you'd rather deal with working up multiple punches to the nose.
As Bob questioned your pain scale, it almost seemed as if the other teammates were slowly leaving the room one by one, until only you two were left in it. The two of you naturally made your way to the couch and talked about your days for what seemed like hours. You went over battle strategies, he debriefed about his appointment. Eventually, noticing the sun going down, you started to become aware of all the dirt and blood still sticking to your body. "Um, can I use your tub? I need to get the day off me before I start peeling my skin off," you joked, standing up off of the couch. "Sure, whatever you need," he insisted, getting up with you. The only teammates with bathtubs instead of showers in their rooms were Bob and Bucky, and in all honesty, you just wanted to be near Bob's presence right now.
The mixture of dried blood, sweat, and dirt stuck your suit straight onto your skin as you made a painful attempt to peel it off. You dropped the clothes to the floor, and examined the damage in your mirror, unraveling all your littered bandages. Your stitches seemed to be doing okay, but the rest of the little cuts and bruises on you made themselves apparent. Your powers were useful in the moment, but damn did the aftercare suck.
Wrapping a towel around yourself, you walked over to Bob's room, leaving a soft knock on the door. A freshly bathed Bob opened up the door, now in his own baggy pajamas, his curls still wet and dripping. "I just wanted a to take a quick soak before you got in, I got a new round of hot water running for you." You gave him a little smile and stepped inside; he closed the door behind you. "Thanks." You walked into the steaming bathroom, tub filled to the brim with hot water like he said. Bob's bathroom was a cozy, dimly lit room that smelled just like him; eucalyptus and peppermint oil, incense cones, and a touch of his cologne. It calmed you down almost immediately, and enough for you to ask your question.
"Can you...uh...help me while I'm in there?" you nervously asked. He raised his eyebrow a little bit at the question. "I-It just hurts to turn a little and I need to reach some spots on my back." He looked you over while he deliberated. "I don't wanna sound rude or anything but...you sure you're okay with me....seeing you?" he whispered that last little part. "I'm wearing a bathing suit under here, I don't mind you seeing that at least," you replied, anticipating his concern. "Oh....okay, yeah sure," he replied, scratching the back of his head.
You dropped your towel and placed it hanging over the sink. The black bikini you were wearing covered enough of you, but still allowed all your injuries to be visible. That first step into the tub was heavenly, the heat rolling down off your spine with a slight, but welcome tinge of pain. You closed your eyes and melted down into the water, Bob smiling at your relaxation. "God, I needed this," you breathed out. Bob walked up closer to you, sitting on the edge of the tub.
You sat there for a minute, body absorbing the heat and releasing the built up tension in your muscles from the day. Once you finally opened your eyes, you found Bob's eyes grazing over your body. "What is it?" you asked. A stupid grin found its way to his face, as he readjusted himself to begin helping you. "Nothing, don't worry."
Bob took a nearby loofa and his body wash, about to squeeze some onto it before you put your hand out. "This is gonna sound weird....can you use your hands?" You didn't bother giving an explanation, it wouldn't change the implications of that request. Bob gave a little nod. "Wait just, give me a sec." He quickly got up out of the room, closing the door behind him. You sat there within your own thoughts. Fuck, was that too much? you thought to yourself, praying you didn't scare him off.
After a few anxious minutes, Bob opened up the door, leaving you with a sight that made your heart stop.
He had traded in his pajamas for a pair of swim shorts. You had to fight to keep your jaw from going slack at the sight of him without a shirt on. He wasn't kidding, that serum really did do a lot of work.
First of all, you had seen his arm muscles before, frequently on display whenever he would wear a short sleeve shirt. But paired with his perfectly plumped chest, carved abs, and toned thighs, it was enough to kill a horse. Worst of all however, was his swim boxers, with a very flawed detail: they were about two sizes too small, and you couldn't tell if Bob was aware or not, but you could see it. It was bigger than you thought. You would need a tranquilizer to hide the blush on your face right now.
"I figured it'd be easier to just get in and help, and this is my only pair of trunks.....is it too much?" So he didn't know, huh. You swallowed back any urges you had and sat up a little bit more in the tub. "No, you're fine," you said, pushing your body back to make room for him in the small tub. He shuffled up and gently placed his legs in one by one, sinking in in front of you.
Bob took the body wash again, pouring some and lathering it between his hands. He motioned you to turn around so he could get your back area. Your back showed him about five scattered cuts and scratches and two large bruises by your lats. You could hear his breath shake a bit as he got closer to you. Naturally, you straightened out your back for him to work with a better canvas.
A sigh instinctively came out of your mouth when his hands came down on you, lathering the soap over your skin. His hands worked into you like putty, spreading the bubbles out evenly onto you. The callouses scratched onto your skin, and you felt a deep heat brewing into your chest. It only grew stronger when his fingers started digging into your muscles. Pain oozed out and away as his thumbs worked out the knots in your upper back. You had to bring a hand up to your mouth to keep a pleasurably moan from slipping out.
The deeper his fingers got into you, the more your body began to twitch, itching for more. The water sloshed around a little when you began to move back into him. And thats when you felt it. Your breath hitched when you caught it. He was achingly big, and you could tell by the throbbing you felt on your lower back. He must've noticed you felt it, since his fingers stopped moving. The two of you sat there for a minute in a hot tension.
Eventually, he picked up a cup sitting outside of the tub, filled it with the bathwater, and poured the soap off of your back. Putting it down, he inched slightly closer to you, his hands finding their way again back to your hips like so many times before. "Tell me where it hurts," he whispered into your ear. You tried to shake out your shivers and be honest with him, your mind needing him in one place but your body wanting him everywhere.
You took the safe route. You needed to keep control of yourself. As long as you could at least.
You pointed to a spot along your spine where one of the bruises lay. "Bend forward a little bit," he spoke, in that low, sultry voice again, almost commanding you. You listened. You moved. But unfortunately, you couldn't keep the moan inside you anymore when his lips grazed and kissed over the bruise. You could keep it quiet enough for him to, hopefully, not hear it however.
Your body adjusted and moved to fit him as his lips trailed up your spine, and eventually to the nape of your neck. He sucked on the tender skin, desperation in its trail. Before he could get too carried away though, he pulled himself off of you. His hot breath stuck to your back, as he took a moment to splash some of the steaming water onto his face. After clearing his throat, he asked you to turn back around and face him, which you did of course.
Finding his face, you could finally see the display of his emotions. The main one: a drunken look in his eyes to desperately hide a growing lust. You could tell. It was the same look in yours. Trying to continue with the bath, Bob took some more body was and drizzled it out onto your arms and upper chest. Sure, you could reach those parts of yourself fine, but what's wrong with letting a man take care of you every once in a while. And if this was how he was gonna do it, you'd be glad to give in.
He massaged the soap into your skin again, relaxing your tense arm muscles, a little gentler around your chest and collarbone area. He pressed a deep kiss into your clavicle scar, a tick for him at this point. His eyes stayed down on you, examining the way your skin fit onto your body. You brought your hand to meet his, currently pressing gentle circles onto your tricep. His eyes found a nice spot, staring at your lips, with you back at his. Trembles started to infect his hands and you could even see a slight quiver stain his lip.
"Does it hurt...anywhere here?" he gasped out. Taking the opportunity, you slowly brought your finger up to the tiniest cut you had on your chin. Smiling, he went in, almost taking your entire chin into his mouth. Your hands wrapped around his neck as his mouth moved to press sloppy kisses into your jawline. But that's all where he stayed. And you needed more than that.
Enough with the teasing, you let go of his neck and took his face in your hands, pulling his mouth away from you. He looked at you, beautiful, deep blue puppy eyes mixed with questioning and fear. "Do you remember what I told you Bob? When I was helping you get ready for the conference?" The fear left his eyes, as he realized what you were playing with here. "Remind me...." You smirked at his words. "When are you ever gonna stop being afraid of me?" you asked, eyes glued to his lips. He dropped his head and let out a defeated laugh. "It's never been you that I'm scared of....it's always been myself," he said, lifting his head back up and closer to yours. "And why's that?" The corner of his mouth lifted up as his hand went to cup your jaw, caressing it with his thumb. "Because I have to keep myself from tearing off my clothes and taking you in the living room each time you walk through that elevator."
Before you could respond to what he said, your body started moving on its own, slamming your lips into his, sloshing water everywhere. The kiss you shared was needy, hungry, and slow. Different from the ones he left littered over your body in the past. What surprised you the most about it was what fueled it. This was not a lustful kiss, which is what you had expected from him. This kiss was filled with a pure, tender, and firing love the two of you have silently shared for each other for the past few months.

His hands wrapped around your waist, hugging you closer into him and onto his laugh, where his raging erection made itself more apparent by the second. "You need me that bad, huh?" you teased, breaking away from the makeout and grinding your clothed cunt against it. Bob nodded profusely, leaning back into you to chase your lips, which you pulled back from. You bit your lip and smiled, wooed by his desperation for you. "Someone's excited, huh?" you joked. "Well, I'd rather not get waterlogged here, so how about we dry off, get these swimsuits off, and...." you leaned close to his ear. "...you can take me on your bed any way you want, how's that sound loverboy?" you bit down onto his earlobe
Bob let out a whispered moan and dropped his head into your shoulder, pressing soft kissed into it. "Yes, please," he replied. Before getting up though, he pulled you into a close hug, which you returned gladly. Bob may have a secret, shameful side you didn't know about, but at the end of the day, you couldn't take the lover out of him.
The two of you stepped out of the bathtub, drained the water, and took your towels to dry yourselves off. Once you were dried, you opened the bathroom door, releasing the steamy air into the rest of Bob room. The cold tinged both your skin, as you walked hand in hand to his bed. You were first to undress, slipping off your bikini bottoms and untying your top off. Bob could've sworn his life flashed before his eyes at that moment, as he admired your beautiful body. He quickly kicked off his trunks, allowing his cock to finally spring out to life. He playfully ran up and tackled you onto his bed, kissing into you neck as you let out playful giggles.
His mouth eventually found its way up to yours, as the two of you slipped each other's tongues into your mouths. His hands gently swept you underneath him on the bed, still careful with your injury. "I-fuck, I wanna taste you," he gasped out while you sucked marks onto his neck. "Do it," you whispered into his neck, giving it a little nibble.
He giggled to himself, as his mouth traced kissed down your neck, sternum, and stomach, all the way down to your hips. You lifted your head to look down at him. He smiled up at you as his hands grabbed into your thighs, bending your legs up. His thumb grazed along your leaking folds, already sending shivers into you. "You're so....beautiful," you could hear him whisper just before leaving his first of many soft kisses on your slit. His tongue slowly worked itself over your clit, as one of your hands found its way down into the roots of his hair.
For leverage, you pulled slight tugs onto his hair, which drove Bob bananas. Each pull only drove him further into your pussy, absorbing his own whines and moans. His tongue worked over each of your lips, memorizing the way it made his taste buds react. You tasted so good, he could sit here eating you for hours. Looking down at the sight underneath you only pushed you closer to the edge. His messy, slightly damp curls intertwined with your fingers, as he sloppily ate your pussy, juice dripping down the sides of his mouth. Game changer moment was when he brought in his digits, curling his pointer and middle finger into your swollen cunt.
An exaggerated moan of his name left your mouth, as your hips buckled into his hand, begging for more. "C'mon, you're doing so good for me baby, keep it up," he spoke into your inner thigh, leaving a little love bite in there that left you biting your tongue. As his fingers worked inside you, you wriggled over the sheets, trying to chase an oncoming high. "You're so perfect sweetheart, so perfect for me," he continuously praised.
The twitch in your lower stomach grew more powerful with the seconds, as fingers continued to hit your walls perfect, his teeth grazed your clit, and hot breath washed over you. "Bob, I-I," you started to moan out. "Do it for me baby, come for me here."
As the high washed over your body, a final moan rushed out, paired with another hip buckle and legs a twitching mess as Bob kissed into your pussy. Your juice coated all over his fingers, which added more growth to his member, if that was even possible right now. His fingers slid perfectly out of your aching pussy and into his own mouth, as he got a better taste for you. A smile curled its way onto his mouth as he sat back on his knees, watching you come down from your high.
Bob couldn't help but crawl back up to you. He had to watch this moment with his own eyes. Your heavy breaths hit his face as he leaned on his elbows to perfectly lay over him. Your cheeks glowed a heavy pink as you came down from your orgasm. "Was that good?" he asks. You couldn't help but let out at laugh at the question. Good? Did he see what happened just now? "You're adorable," you validated, love-drunk eyes gazing into his own.
He let a breath out of his nose, and dropped his whole body weight down onto you. You cried out in a fake pain and your body absorbed his heat into you. "Get off, you're killing me!" you joked. He shook his head vigorously. "No, you gotta do it yourself," he played back. You giggled and used whatever strength you had left over to try and push him off. To no avail of course. "Alright, you gotta help just a little, you're pure muscle sweetie." Bob sighed and lifted his body off of you just enough for you to roll him to the other side of the bed.
Before he could move again, you jumped on top of him, placing your own dead weight on top of him now. "You see, I'd play along now, but I'm scared I'd toss you off the bed," he said. True, best not to play games like this with someone who has super strength. "Ugh, no fair," you complained, dropping your head into his neck. You heard his awkwardly adorable laugh, making your heart soar, as he scratched the back of your head.
"C'mere, let me see you," he asked gently. You lifted your head up, a fake frown plastered on your face. The act didn't last long though when you saw his face.
The way he looked at you right now was the way girls had dreamed about since they were kids. His eyes softened with pure adoration for you, with his mouth curled into the dumbest grin. He spoke your name in a question. "Yeah?" He brought his hand up to cup your jaw, which you nuzzled your cheek into as his thumb traced over your lips. "I....I think..." he trailed off. "What is it?" His smile turned slightly more serious. "I think I love you." He paused. "I know I do."
If it weren't for his body heat grounding you into the moment, you would've sworn you were dreaming right now. Everything you've ever wanted was right here. It was all in him. It was him.
"I know I love you too."
The giddy look on his face could set you free, as both his hands grabbed your cheeks to pull you into his kiss stained lips. The two of you continued to kiss and roll all over the bed, as you prepared to continue the rest of your love filled night.
~~~~~~
Sun rays streamed through the breaks in the blinds of Bob's room. Your eyes attempted to adjust to the brightness as you awoke. Wrapped up in his sheets, blooming with his scent, you began to remember the dreamlike events of the night before. You turned to the other side of the bed, and there he was.
Like a painting, Bob laid next to you, still off in his hopefully pleasant dreams. Loose strand of hair fell in front of his sleeping face, his mouth slightly agape to breathe, still swollen lips. In fact, all of your souvenirs from the night before laid over him: scattered hickeys along his neck and shoulders, and nail scratches peeking over from his upper back. It was perfect. He was perfect.
His breath readjusted as he began to stir a bit, and finally, his lashes fluttered open to see you. A childlike smile painted your face as you saw his sleepy eyes adjust to you. "Good morning sleepyhead," you pressed into the tip of his nose as you kissed it. He smiled an eyes closed one to you. "Morning honey." You had found out last night how much of a pet-name user Bob was. You didn't mind at all. It only helped seal the "it feels like i'm in a movie" idea for you. "How'd you sleep," he asked with his eyes still closed. "Good, great even," you hummed. "And you?" His eyes opened and he leaned in closer to you to kiss you silly. "Best in years, honest truth."
After some morning talk, Bob got up to go to the kitchen, leaving you with some extra minutes for sleep. When he returned, it was with a plate of breakfast on a tray just for the two of you. It took a miracle for you not to jump over the bed and onto him then and there. The plate for you included all your favorites: blueberry Eggos, orange slices, and eggs. These weren't your usual eggs though. "I know you like them burnt, but by the time I remembered, I had taken them out of the pan and these were the last two," he apologized.
You inspected the eggs with your fork. It scared you a little, but you'd rather risk a stomach ache than hurt Bob's feelings right now. And plus, it was time to finally grow up. Taking them onto your fork, you took a deep breath, and put them in your mouth.
Chew, chew, chew. Swallow.
God, these were so much better than rubbery, burnt eggs. "These are so fucking good Bob, oh my god," you salivated. He smiled that dumb grin and climbed into bed next to you, as the two of you continued the rest of your morning together. It was nice to know you didn't have to burn your eggs anymore. The other side was better than you could've imagined.
the same thing ă»â„ă»b. barnes
summary: during a mission, you put yourself in harm's way to protect bucky. back at the avengers compound, he wants to know why. | 1.4k words, angst with a happy ending
â.àłàż*:
"You should be resting."
You don't turn your head as the familiar voice comes from behind you, too focused on the delicate art of making the perfect sandwich to look away. You are a woman on a mission. "I was hungry."
A few seconds later, he's standing next to you, leaning back against the countertop with arms folded across his broad chest. "It's been less than twelve hours since they patched you up."
He's not going to stop hovering, you realize, because that's what Bucky does when he's worried.
"Want half?" Maybe you can distract him with food.
He regards the towering monstrosity on the cutting board and the chaotic layers of meat, cheese, and veggies sticking out at all angles.
You can't help but grin as you slap another slice of bread on top. "A quarter, then?"
Bucky has the audacity to look offended. "I'm not eating that thing."
You cradle the plate in your left hand, holding the sandwich with your right, and give him a pointed look. "Your loss."
Bucky just watches, arms still crossed, as you take a huge bite. His blue eyes remain narrowed, his mouth pressed into a thin line. He's like a one-man intervention waiting to happen. You shrug and wander over to the kitchen table.
Sitting down is a bit of an effort. The wound on your side pulls as you slowly lower yourself onto the chair, but if you can keep from grimacing too hard, Bucky won't be able to tell, will he?
Your smile probably gives you away. He narrows his eyes further. "Why did you do that?"
"Because I'm hungry?"
"No." Bucky takes a step forward. "I meant why did you get between me and that shot?"
Good question. The answer is embarrassing and you'd sooner walk barefoot over hot coals than tell him the truth.
"Hm?"
Another step. "I have superhuman healing powers."
"I'll live."
"It was stupid."
"You're ruining myâow," you mutter, dropping the sandwich as you instinctively put your hand over your bandage. There goes the carefully maintained poker face. You force yourself to remove your hand and look up at Bucky with what you hope is an innocent expression, even as your side throbs in protest. "My sandwich. You're ruining my sandwich. Are you sure you don't want a bite?"
Bucky is too smart to take the bait. He moves around the table, coming to stand in front of you. The whole 'arms-crossed-stern-glare' thing again. It would be intimidating if you didn't know him so well.
"You could've been killed," he's like a dog with a bone, you swear.
"But I wasn't," you say pointedly. "I'm fine."
"Fine? You were shot."
"Will you just let it go? It doesn't even...hurt...that much," you lie.
It will take a while for the super-soldier serum in your blood â a weaker variation of the same stuff that runs through Bucky's veins â to kick in and accelerate your healing.
Bucky exhales. He looks about ready to give you an earful, but then his gaze shifts and he notices the way you're holding your side, how stiffly you're sitting.
You move your traitorous hand away like you've been burned.
"How bad is it?"
"Huh?" you sound deliberately casual. Too casual. "It's...totally fine. Not bad, really. Don't worry. I don't even feel it."
There's the reason why you've never been a spy. You can't lie to save your life, apparently.
Or maybe just not to Bucky.
"Okay. It hurts, like, just a little bit...likeâlike not even hurts hurts, just..." you trail off with a grimace as he comes closer. "More of an itch?"
"An itch?" Bucky sounds dubious.
"More of a burn," you concede. "A...mildly annoying but totally manageable sort of a burn."
"You are a terrible liar."
"Okay, so it hurts," you snap, the last vestiges of your patience vanishing. "I have an extensive hole in my side, I get it. It's notâI don't want you to feel bad about it. It's really not terrible, I can take it."
Bucky shakes his head. "What if it had been worse? What if they'd shot you somewhere vital?"
"They didn't."
"But what if they had?"
"Then I would have died!"
Bucky looks at you like you just kicked him. "Yeah. That's what I'm trying to say."
You open your mouth, then close it.
"You think I want that?" he asks softly.
"No." You suddenly feel very small. "Of course not, I just...just..."
"Just what?"
"I don't know," you admit with a sigh. "It's just that you are...people need you, you know? And you have a life, people who care about you, but I'm just..."
A nobody. A girl with no past, who can barely make sense of her present.
"...it would be better if it was me. That's all."
"It would never be better if you were hurt."
"Buckyâ"
"You don't get it, do you?" he asks in a low voice. "People need you too."
You roll your eyes. "Please. You mean the team?"
"Me," Bucky says pointedly. "You think it's easy for me? When you get hurt? It kills me."
The sandwich lays forgotten on the table, squashed flat under your clasped hands. "It...kills you?"
He just looks at you for a long moment.
Your heart flutters in your chest. You have a sudden, intense urge to break the silence with a terrible joke, a quip, something light and witty to dispel the heaviness in the air and make this moment go away. But before you can open your mouth, Bucky shakes his head.
"You kill me."
Okay, that's not where you thought this was going. "What?"
"When you say stuff like that. When you make it sound like you don't matter, like it's okay for you to get hurt. Or worse. It's not."
Oh.
"Bucky," you try again, with a more serious tone. "I don'tâ"
"Stop saying that," he cuts you off.
You realize your mouth is still hanging open and snap it shut.
"You want to know what I think?" Bucky is so close now you could reach out and touch him, if you were brave enough. "I think that you got this...thing in your head, that you're not good enough, or strong enough, or that you're broken somehow. I think that you forget that it's okay to want things. I think that maybe you think nobody needs you. That no one wants you."
You swallow. You're afraid to say anything, to move, because your heart is hammering against your ribs and Bucky is looking at you like he can see straight into your soul.
"But I do."
"Do...what?" you whisper.
"Want you."
It's the last thing you expect to hear. "Bucky, you don't mean that."
His voice drops an octave. "Don't tell me what I mean."
Your cheeks are burning. You feel pinned under his gaze. Your side is throbbing again and you have a mouthful of butterflies and it's all just too much.
You move to get up but only make it halfway before the wound pulls again and you wince. "Shit."
"Where do you think you're going?" Bucky reaches out to help you, one hand braced against your shoulder as you sink back down into the chair. His expression has softened. "You need to rest."
You really want to kiss him right now.
It's the closest he's ever been to you, perhaps. You can feel his breath on your face.
"I need to...? You really confuse me, Barnes."
"How so?"
"Well, first you tell me that I kill you, and then you say you want me. It's kind of a mixed messageâ"
"I'm not interested in being just friends with you," Bucky cuts you off abruptly. "Is that clear enough?"
Your lips part but nothing comes out. There's a warm, tingling sensation in your chest and you suddenly can't breathe properly. "That'sâyouâ"
Bucky smirks, just a little. He looks almost...proud of himself? Like he's happy he's rendered you speechless for once.
You decide to take a page from his book and put him on the spot. "And what do you think I want?"
"I don't know," he murmurs, leaning even closer. "But I hope it's the same thing."
His lips brush against yours, soft and gentle. He pulls away and you want to chase after him but then he's back again and kissing you harder this time, all teeth and tongue and ragged breathing and heat.
You close your eyes. Your head is spinning and you can't get enough air but you're kissing him back now, both hands coming up to fist in his shirt, holding on for dear life.
His mouth trails down your neck, leaving hot kisses along your jawline. You let out a breathy sigh.
"Is that...supposed to help me heal faster, mhm?"
Bucky just smiles against your skin.
Delivery For Bob
Bob Reynolds x fem!reader
Word Count: 1163
âOkay, so maybe if we come in from this side. Then John can go around from the other angle.â Yelena suggested to the other shoulder length haired man.Â
Her and Bucky were in the Watchtower currently working on a strategy for an upcoming mission. The others were scattered about elsewhere doing their own things, while Bob? He was keeping himself busy by reading a new book on his usual chair nearby.Â
âI mean that could work but I really think Ava would be best here. Then we can use her there,â Buckyâs metal arm reached across, landing on the screen.Â
âYeah I guess that makes sense. But I think Ava would be best here, no?â She pointed to another area and just as the blondeâs finger was about to touch the device the elevator door glided open.Â
The pair's eyes left the blueprint and turned all their attention toâŠwell you. There you stood in the elevator doorway peeking at the two with your eyebrows furrowed.Â
âI have a food delivery here,â you held a shake in one hand and then a bag in the other.Â
âWho is this? Who authorized this person to come up here?â Yelena asked, turning behind her and thatâs when Bob, who wasnât paying attention before, suddenly scrambled out of his position, practically tumbling towards your direction. âThatâs for me! Thatâs mine!â He came to a stop right in front of you, straightening up a bit as he did.Â
Wearing a little smile and tilting his head to the side, he breathed out, âhi.â
You couldnât help but smile at the man youâve seen multiple times over the last few weeks. âHi,â you replied, and when it looked like he wasnât going to reach for his food you held it out in front of you, âorder for Bob,â you said. A surprised âoh,â left his mouth and his gaze shifted to the meal, almost as if he just remembered why you were there in the first place. Using his full upper body, he bent at the hips, reaching out to grab his items. âOh wait right there, Iâll get your tip.âÂ
You stood there patiently as he ran off. Feeling a bit awkward you glanced to the side at the other two who were still looking at you. Upon making eye contact you pressed your lips together and offered them a courteous smile, which Yelena reciprocated, her own smile seeming a bit more enthusiastic.Â
Bob returned quickly handing you a few rolled up bills. You glanced down, âthis is too much, are you sure?â
He shrugged, the smile never leaving his face. âYou always get my order right and here on time and youâre always so nice.â Yelena smirked at Bucky who just raised his brows before she turned back around to continue viewing the odd pairing.Â
âWell thatâs part of the job, but thank you,â you let out a single chuckle as you started heading back towards the elevator.Â
âYou do it really well,â he confirmed, after you pushed the button and the door began to slide shut.Â
âGoodbye Bob,â you send him one last look, as the doors completely shut, leaving Bob swaying side to side with an awed expression on his face.Â
With a little content sigh he started spinning back around but met Yelenaâs smirking expression halfway through the action.Â
Catching sight of her and then Bucky, the brunette cleared his throat and wiped the grin off before heading back to his chair.Â
Yelena took a few steps towards him, expression unchanging.Â
âYelena?â She raised up her hand waving off Bucky who just shook his head and let out an annoyed grunt.Â
âBob. Who was that?â
âDelivery,â he answered, glancing up at Yelena from his chair.Â
âRight. No I got that but who was that?â
âFood delivery girl.â
Yelena remained quiet, her face being the only thing prompting him to continue. âSheâs just been coming by lately whenever I order food.â
âYou have been ordering a lot lately. Is she why?â
Bob lifts his head a bit shutting his eyes as he shook his head a few times before then tilting his head and shrugging.Â
âIf I didnât know any better Iâd think youâd have a crush.â
âCrush. Who has crush? Lena you have crush?â
The blonde rolled her eyes at the man who suddenly appeared from another doorway. âNo, not me Alexei. Bob.â
Alexeiâs jaw dropped a bit before a wide smile erupted, âBob! You need help with lady? I can help you! You are sensitive guy and the ladies love that, but something you need is confidence. Next time you see pretty lady, walk up and say, âIâm Sentry,â show some of your moves then say, âlet me take you out!ââ
âWhoâs he taking out?â Came John Walker, entering the room. He was battered and dirty having just arrived from a mission.Â
âNo one.â
âThe food delivery app lady!â Alexei answered for the brunette.Â
âCan we stop talking about this please,â Bob asked, his voice a bit small.Â
âAww Bobby old boy has a crush, my teeth are getting cavities from just thinking about it.â Bob shot Walker a look before Walker added, âwhatâs she look like? She pretty?â
âOoh yes! Show me the pretty lady,â Alexei shouted.Â
âI donât have a picture of her and if I did that would be weird!â
âEh not so weird, next time just snap a quick pic, take one second,â Alexei suggested before turning to Bucky who had his back to the group, âBucky! You see her. What you think?â
Bucky sighed, eyes finally leaving the upcoming mission plans alone, âI thinkâŠwe should let Bob do this however he wants.â
âThank you!â Bob shouts glad someone is staying out of this.Â
âI want to see pretty lady.â
âWell you canât Alexei, cause sheâs gone. Now please Yelena can we get back to this.â
Yelena raises her hands in defense and starts to walk back to the screen but as she does so, a ding can be heard garnering everyone's attention as the elevator doors slide open again.Â
Out stepped you as you cautiously looked around at the faces youâve only seen in the news before. Typically whenever you delivered a meal it was just Bob there, (that was until this afternoon of course).
âSorry, I have a delivery for Ava Starr.â
Ava suddenly stepped out from the side, where sheâs been for who knows how long reaching out with a mannerly smile on her lips. âThatâs me. Thank you and keep the tip.â
You thank her before taking one last glance around the room eventually locking eyes with Bob, who you offer a small grin to before fully turning around and leaving.Â
The room stayed silent as the elevator closed and it started to descend.Â
Alexei broke the still gushing, âoh Bob, she is beautiful lady.â
Bob just groaned in response, throwing his head back against the chair, knowing heâd never hear the end of this.Â
thinking about kissing BOB REYNOLDS. like a thunderstorm at the very edge of summerâwarm and and strange and humming with anticipation. electric might be the word for it, a kind of tension that raises goosebumps before it ever touches skin.
even when your handâs already on his chest, feeling the off-rhythm stutter of his heart like it might leap straight into your palm, he stares at you with those wide, owlish eyes, not quite believing heâs allowed to be wanted by someone like you.
kissing bob, who overthinks everything. but only because he wants so badly to get it rightâto make it good for you, better than good. his eagerness tips toward clumsy; his nose bumps yours, and his mouth misses by a fraction. thereâs an awkward dry clash of teeth between you followed by a breathless chuckle as he murmurs, âsorry,â without pulling too far away.
still bashful but fairly undaunted, he tilts his face forward and your lips meet again. his are warm (a bit chapped) and oh so careful... moving with exploratory curiosity, shaping itself in sync to yours, exhaling into the spaces where you part for breath. he listens to every small sign of pleasure from you with his entire body. learning you by heart.
when your fingers close around his wrist, he makes this small, involuntary sound of contentment in the back of his throat. he kisses you with an aching sincerity, and thereâs something devastating about someone who just wants you, so uncomplicated and wholly.
you think you could drown in that kind of earnest. and maybe you already are.
deadpool getting jealous when youâre giving wolfie too much attention in a poly relationship!!! đ
âWade. Stop pouting.â Logan grunted from against your neck, eyes closed shut as he tried to focus back on you and tightened his grip on your waist.
âAnd how the fuck do you know Iâm pouting! Youâve got your eyes closed!â Wade exclaimed, pouting from the other side of the room, watching on in jealously as you continued to shower Logan with more affection.
âI donât need to open my eyes to know your pouting dipshit.â Logan growled but his temperament was easily faltered when he felt you run your hand through his hair and scraping at his scalp deliciously, you almost swore you heard the gruff Logan Howlett purr like a domesticated cat.
âWade whatâs wrong? Youâve been like this all week and when I go to kiss you or anything, you completely brush me off.â You said as you looked over at him in his ridiculous pink unicorn pyjamas with matching slippers, squeezing his unicorn plushie tighter and tighter that you swore the poor thing was going to pop. You didnât like it when either of your partners was upset or angry, theyâve been down those roads before and all you wanted was to love them as much as you can while you can; however you couldnât do that if one of your partners was too stubborn to tell you what was wrong.
Thankfully after a total record of fifteen minutes of sighing and huffing, Wade looks over at you with the most dramatic pout on his lips. âFine since my gorgeous, fantastic, sexy, hot pookie insists that I tell them whatâs wrong, Iâll shall.â He then takes a deep breath and points to the half asleep Logan cuddled up against you. âYou have been giving lumberjack over there far too much attention lately Whereâs my affection because I donât see it! Iâm being neglected! I want to be cuddled! whereâs my cuddles!â You couldnât help but chuckle at Wadeâs outburst, which only made him pout harder as he showed you his back which had a massive cartoon unicorn rearing on its back legs.
âGreat now my sexy, cool, gorgeously handsome partner is laughing at my pain, I must truly be in hell.â He mutters to himself as he burrows his head into his arms, only then did your laughter subsided as finally spoke. âDonât be like that, you know I love you and Logan equally.â You tell him, only to hear him scoff, which made your heart hurt a little, before you the. patted the spare space of the couch with your hand, wanting to make it up to your boyfriend. âStop it with the pouting and get your fine ass on over here handsome, weâve got room for one moreâŠif you want it that is. Iâm not forcing-â
Before you could finish your sentence, Wade bolted from his spot across the room, and clung onto your other side as he nuzzled his head against your chest, his arms latching onto you waist just beneath Loganâs own arms. âThought youâd never ask sweet cheeks!â Wade replied as he peppered kisses across your collar bones, causing your to giggle as you ran your free hand up and down his back soothingly, now feeling happy and content with both men that you love dearly being cuddled up on either side of you.
âGood. I donât want you to ever think I donât love either of you because I do.â You said as you kissed both Wade and Logan on their foreheads, noses and finally their lips as Logan sluggishly reciprocated his kiss in due to being half asleep, just as Wade almost devoured you eagerly with his own kiss.
âI think we both know that very well peanut, and we love you all the more for it.â Wade uttered softly as he made himself comfortable against your side, feeling his eyelids grow heavier. Wade knee youâd never made him feel jealous, not intentionally nor accidentally, but sometimes he felt a little lost whenever you spent just a small fraction more time with Logan over him. He just wants so time with you too! And so now as he burrows his head under your chin, ready to drift off, he couldnât help but reach a hand over to squeeze Loganâs firm ass; only to find that he was one step ahead of him and quickly gripped his wrist.
âI wouldnât think about it bub.â Logan murmured.
âHow is he doing that with his eyes closed.â Wade whispered to you as you both looked at Logan as he dropped wadeâs hand.
âItâs a mystery weâll never find out sweetheart.â You replied as you kissed Wade on the forehead, giving his ass a little pat and a loving squeeze. You knew Wade expresses his affection in rather bold ways but only did so as long as it alright with you and Logan. He didnât want to put you out of your comfort zone to accommodate him but you werenât so easily fazed by his actions, not when you have been friends with him as long as you have been partners. So needless to say it wasnât at all surprising when you suddenly picked up Wadeâs tendency to squeeze and or slap your partners asses affectionately.
Much to Loganâs dismay no less but he took it in stride for your sake and occasionally Wadeâs but mainly yours.
âThe author mustâve gotten pretty lazy or had a brain fart if this is how the fanfic ends.â Wade yawns, âi couldâve done a far better job thatâs for sure.â He adds before falling asleep. meanwhile you stayed up wondering who the fuck this âauthorâ he was on about, and what did he mean by âfanfic?â
masterlist | read on ao3
"You got any plans for tomorrow?" Johnny asks the day before Valentineâs Day, spread out on your bed like usual, his eyes not lifting from his phone.
You snort. "Yeah, right."
Thereâs something, you think, about the aggressively pink-and-flowers-and-chocolate aesthetic of this month that well and truly makes you want to throw up. 14 per cent discounts and coupley pictures and cutesy videos have been flooding your feed for the past week and a half, and with most of your friends neatly paired off as well, itâs like thereâs absolutely no escaping theâ
"Why not?" Johnny asks. "I mean, pretty girl like you gotta have guys lined up around the corner." The smile in his voice is sincere enough to let you believe he really does mean that as a compliment.
"First of all, ew," you reply, closing your app after yet another "date fit" video. "Second, the last date I went on ended with the guy leaving the country, so thereâs that." Granted, youâd known about his travel plans beforehand, but still.
Johnny pushes up on one elbow. "Really. Coffee shop creep?"
You scowl at him. "Donât call him that."
Heâd been nice enough. Paid for your drinks and museum tickets. Hung his jacket over your shoulders when you started shivering. Yes, heâd also ghosted you and gone to Iceland, but it wasnât like youâd known him that well.
Youâd only gotten your hopes up too soon, like you always did.
"That was your last date?" Johnny says, attention fully on you now. "Wasnât that, like, four years ago?"
"Five," you mumble, your cheeks heating. Almost six, but who's counting? "So, no, Iâm not doing Valentineâs Day."
Being single is much easier, anyway. You donât have to consider anyone else in your life; donât have to wonder about what theyâre doing or whether their family liked you or if theyâre planning a three month trip abroad ⊠huh. Maybe that oneâs still somewhat of a sore point, after all.
"Why havenât you gone out with anyone in five years?"
"I donât know, it just sorta happened. Not everyone goes on a date with a new person every week."
"Gross exaggeration."
"Not really," you say, nudging his side with your toes. "Do you ever see those girls a second time?"
"Sometimes. Hey, when did this become about me?" He catches your foot when you make to poke him again. His smile doesnât waver, but his voice becomes gentler when he speaks again, a little more serious. "I thought you want a relationship."
You swallow.
"I do," you say quietly. "Itâs just ⊠itâs scary. I donât like putting myself out there, and Iâve been so busy with everything else. I donât have time to worry about small talk or the fact that at this point I donât even know how to kiss anyone anymore."
Itâs a vicious circle, really. Wanting something serious while also being terrified of anything serious. And suddenly, almost without noticing, years have gone by and nothing has changed at all.
Next to you, Johnny goes very still.
Honestly, itâs not the reaction youâve expected. Deep down, you thought heâd laugh, tease you about the fact that itâs been nearly six years since youâve gotten intimate with anyone. Sometimes, you want to laugh about it yourself, even though at the same time, you donât find it funny at all.
But Johnny Storm has always had more layers than people give him credit for; even you, sometimes.
"Do you âŠ" His voice cracks and he clears his throat, staring at the wall behind you. "Do you wanna practice?"
You blink, heat rushing to your cheeks before you even understand what heâs asking. "Practice what?"
"Kissing."
âŠ
Maybe your brain short-circuited. Thereâs been some misfiring in your neurons, mistranslating his actual words, because thereâs no way on earth heâs just suggested what you thought you heard.
"Iâ"
"Itâd be one less thing for you to worry about, you know," he interrupts, talking quickly. Youâve never seen him look at you this intently. He seems to realize from your stunned expression, and a shadow of his earlier smile softens his face. "Donât worry," he says. "I donât bite unless you want me to."
Your mouth opens and closes a couple of times, your heart pounding so loud you can hear feel it behind your temples. "I donât know how to respond to this."
"Say yes," Johnny says. "We can just try it out. We donât have to bring it up again after today, itâll just be ⊠preparation, you know? Step number one of getting you back in the game."
It doesnât feel like a game at all, this suggestion.
The craziest part about it, though, is that you are seriously considering it. You stare at him, his pretty blue eyes and his cocky grin, and the earnest expression behind his nonchalant façade. No matter your answer, he wouldnât judge you.
Besides, itâs not like youâve never thought about it.
Youâve caught glimpses of Johnny kissing other girls one too many times not to secretly wonder what it would be like. To feel his lips on yours, the heat of his body pressed against you, your hands gliding over the short buzz of his hair.
Itâs longer now, maybe even long enough to tangle your fingers in and yank.
"Fine," you say quietly, and watch his smirk falter ever so slightly.
No matter his grand bravado, he clearly didnât expect you to agree. Itâs sweet, the way he scrambles to sit up properly, not even caring that his phone drops to the floor.
"Yeah?"
You swallow, nod. Thereâs an excited blush spreading on his cheeks thatâs kind of endearing but also makes you want to melt into the ground. The way heâs staring at your lips makes you feel aware of every single cell in your body. You canât remember ever being looked at like this.
"Do you want to "
"I donât know, can you justâ"
His hand cups your cheek, warm and steady. Heâs always so warm.
"Close your eyes," he says lowly, and they fall shut of their own accord.
You donât think youâre breathing as you wait, your hands fisted into your blanket as if youâre trying to hold on for dear life. Maybe you are.
For a very long moment, nothing happens, and youâre starting to feel like youâre being ridiculed after all. Like youâre going to open your eyes to Johnny laughing in yourâ
His lips brush against yours, just a single, careful touch, lingering, testing the waters. You donât dare to move, or breathe, or do anything but feel. Your mind is racing, even though you cannot catch a single coherent thought.
The sheets rustle, the mattress dipping as Johnny breaks the kiss, adjusting his position. His thumb is still on your cheek, a gentle caress.
"You in there, darlinâ?"
"Yeah." Your grip loosens a little.
"Okay." His breath fans over your lips. "You wanna try again?"
Youâve barely started nodding before he dives in again.
This time, youâre a little more ready for it, moving your mouth against his experimentally. He smells nice. You donât know what to do with your hands.
He pulls away again and your heart tugs painfully, but he only tilts his head the other way and goes back to kissing you, still so soft, so languidly, like he has all the time in the world. He makes no rush of deepening the kiss, which is so like and unlike him at the same time.
Itâs you, then, who leans in closer, your tongue slipping into his mouth, your brain going in and out of focus with each shuddering breath as he responds fervently. His fingers move down to your chin, angling it just a little. One of your hands lands on his shoulder, seeking balance.
He tastes sweet. Dangerously addictive.
This time, youâre the one to move back, your eyes flying open, feeling like his fire has set your entire body aflame. "Howâd I do?"
Johnny blinks a couple of times, staring at your mouth, his pupils blown wide. You press your lips together.
"Not bad," he says hoarsely. "Maybe a little âŠ"
"What?"
"Come here."
He catches your hands, putting them around his neck. Itâs an awkward position, the rest of your body still angled away from his until he raises an eyebrow.
You realize thereâs two options before you, and youâre not ready to have him on top of you in your own bed.
Instead, you straddle his thighs, looking over his shoulder to not have to meet his eye. His arms fall around you, settling at your lower back, pleasurable heat crawling up your spine.
"This okay?"
You kiss him again.
He makes a startled noise against your mouth, tightening his hold on you as his head drops back, granting you easier access. Your heart is pounding so wildly in your chest itâs making you dizzy.
Itâs the most natural thing in the world, to kiss him like this. To scratch your fingernails against the nape of his neck until he makes that sound again. It vibrates against your tongue, and you melt against him, his body hot and solid against yours. Even when you come apart for air, heâs the only real thing in the world.
Thereâs nothing innocent about the way your mouths crash together now. He swallows your surprised moan like heâs been hungering for it, his hands bunching up your shirt at your back. You shudder against him when he grazes bare skin, each new touch burning in the most delicious manner. Youâre weightless, intertwined, content to never again draw a single breath that hasnât fallen from his lips first.
His tongue slides against yours, tasting your mouth in a way that borders on desperate. You press even closer to him, your fingers slipping into his hair in that way youâve wanted to for longer than youâve cared to admit even to yourself, hips involuntarily stuttering against his until he groans, responding in kind to each push and pull.
Finally, after what well may have been hours, you come apart, your forehead pressed to his, chests heaving. You donât want to open your eyes; donât want to return to the aftermath of what youâve just done.
"Go out with me."
You sit back. Johnnyâs arms are still draped around you, and thereâs a mesmerized smile on his face as he looks at you. "What?"
"Go out with me. On a date." His voice is rough and strangely hopeful, and it makes your stomach flutter. "I promise no small talk."
"Youâre not serious."
"About you?" His gaze drops to your lips again. "Always." His nose bumps against yours. "Tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow?" You exhale shakily, dropping to a whisper. "Thatâs soon."
"Hmm."
"Maybe I should practice some more before then."
He smiles against your mouth.
uncle!joaquin torres x afab!reader
synopsis: while y/n meets joaquin's family, she wonders if its time to start one their own.
request: yes
wc: 1.4k
a/n: i wrote this while having a migraine and got too excited not to post this immediately LOL this is my first time writing for joaquin so any feedback is appreciated <333
âYouâre here!â
Joaquin leapt down the porch steps, landing flat on his feet.
Y/N suppressed a grin, flapping her arms uselessly at her sides, âI thought about bailing but realized thatâd probably be ruââ
She yelped as her feet left the sidewalk, holding onto Joaquinâs shoulders as her spun her. His hands rested on her waist when he set her down. Love shone bright in his eyes as he gazed at her.
âIâm nervous,â Y/N admitted.
âWhat? No, donât be nervous,â he rubbed her arms reassuringly. âLook, Iâll be there with you the whole time. I wonât leave your side.â
âDo I look all right?â she glanced at her clothes. âDo I look good?â
âYeah, you look good.â His smile sharpened into a smirk as he eyed her up, âGimme a spin.â
Joaquinâs hand slid down her arm as she stepped back, taking her fingers.
âOkay, baby!â He cheered as she spun.
Y/N threw her head back as she laughed. âOkay, okay. Your turn. Come on!â
Joaquin held his hands up in surrender as he used his heels to turn himself.
âOkay,â she drawled, encouraging him.
He popped the collar of his button-up and forced his face in an exaggerated look of flirtation.
She erupted in a fit of laughter, âI hate it when you do that.â
âWhy?â he fought to hide his smile. âDonât I look handsome?â
She closed the distance between them, fixing his collar as she giggled, âYeah, handsome Squidward.â
He put a hand to his heart, the other cupping her neck, âYou wound me, mi amor.â
Y/N smiled as she leaned in, kissing him softly. Joaquin leaned in, deepening the kiss and as he went in for more, she pushed away.
âMi amor,â he drawled, reaching for her.
âYour family could be watching!â
Joaquinâs smile turned soft, the one that always had her melting in his hands, âI donât care.â
âI do,â she emphasized.
He smiled at her a moment longer before his hand shot out. Y/N yelped as he poked her under the rib. She watched him with her mouth open as he darted for the door like an idiot.
Y/N met Joaquin at the garden centre she worked at. Heâd been dragged along by his mother and grandmother. Sheâd noticed him a couple isles away as she packed flowers into fresh pots, nearly jumping and repeatedly half-twisting at the waist as he anxiously followed behind them. Y/N smiled at his boyish behaviour, Joaquin speaking excitedly in Spanish and clearly bothering his grandmother who smacked him in the arm with a wrinkled hand every now and then. Then heâd stopped to get a proper look at the place as he caught Y/Nâs gaze. All the energy had seemingly left his body, a small smile creepy up his lips. He waved at her but sheâd only smiled, averting her gaze back to her work.
Joaquin was awkward and dorky but charismatic and funny. The more dates he took her on, the more she fell for him. He was patient and attentive and he held the door for her. He refused to let her pay and brought her flowers on every date. He let her set the tone, not rushing her into anything she wasnât comfortable with and she appreciated that most. When she said sheâd like something more, he nearly leapt into the air with the same energy she saw in the greenhouse.
Y/N raced towards him up the steps and he laughed as she fought to poke him back.
âYouâre such a little shit,â she said through her teeth, but a smile threatened to appear.
Joaquin pressed a hard kiss to her cheek before opening the door with his hand in hers. When she stepped inside, her senses were overloaded by voices, music, and the scent of homemade food. Joaquinâs grandmotherâs home was small but cozy, more welcoming than sheâd anticipated. He pulled her into the living room and it seemed as though the entire house erupted in cheers at the sight of them. She squeezed his hand as his family crowded around them, introducing themselves with cheek kisses and hugs. Joaquin clapped cousins on the shoulder and ruffled the kids sticking to their parents like glue. Y/N was overwhelmed, pleasantries all but a blur as they made their way through the crowd.
âAbu,â Joaquin called into the kitchen. âAbuela.â
âMm,â the old woman she saw at the greenhouse a year ago turned from the counter, a colourful apron tied around her waist.
Joaquin kissed her on the cheeks before saying in Spanish, âAbu, this is Y/N.â
âAye, Y/N!â The older woman came toward her with her arms open. She took her face in her wrinkled hands, pressing a kiss to each cheek.
âIt is very nice to finally meet you, Abuela,â Y/N smiled.
She turned to her grandson, saying something in Spanish she couldnât quite catch but it made her pinch Joaquinâs cheek and his ears turn red.
Y/N eyed the kitchen counters covered in colourful foods, the pot nearly boiling over on the stove. âCan I help you with anything?â
âNo, no, no, no. You go,â she waved them off. âGo, go.â
Joaquin pulled her out into the backyard where more of his family loitered. The younger children seemed to gravitate to the grass, running and chasing each other as they laughed. Joaquin caught the attention of his brother who stood alongside his wife and when she turned, Y/Nâs mouth dropped.
âOh, my God, Joaquin,â Y/N squeezed his arm.
An infant lay asleep in her arms, no more than a few months old. She said hello to Joaquinâs brother and sister-in-law but couldnât take her eyes off the baby.
âGive me my nephew,â Joaquin reached out.
âWhere are your manners?â she chided, but handed the baby over with a smile.
The baby opened his eyes, fussing for a moment before Joaquin shushed him, bouncing him gently.
âThis is RamĂłn,â he said softly.
âYou look good with a baby in your arms, Joaquin,â his sister-in-law teased.
âHeâs beautiful, Ana,â said Y/N.
âThe baby or your boyfriend?â she joked, making them all laugh.
Y/N hugged Joaquinâs bicep, resting her head on his shoulder as she observed RamĂłn yawn.
âÂĄTio Joaquin!â
His niece and nephew ran up to him, his nephew pulling the bottom of his shirt.
âCome play!â his nephew giggled, stretching the fabric with his small hand.
âWe want you to get us!â said his niece.
âVale, vale,â Joaquin nodded, urging the baby back to Ana.
Joaquin stared at them a moment longer before suddenly lunging forward. They screamed and ran away, Joaquin chasing after them. Y/N watched them from the patio with a smile on her face. Eventually, he fell back on the grass, out of breath, but the kids took it as an invitation to jump on him. They piled on, the adults laughing as they watched.
âHow long have you been dating?â asked Ana.
âA little over a year,â answered Joaquinâs brother.
âI didnât ask you,â Ana scolded, elbowing him.
Y/N had met Joaquinâs brother previously, finding that they were almost the same person. She only laughed when he replied out of excitement rather than disrespect.
âHeâs right,â Y/N nodded. âI wanted to take it slow.â
âEver talk of getting married?â
A small smile formed on her lips. âWeâve talked about it. I think weâre just waiting for the right time. The worldâs still healing from the Blip, you know?â
âThereâs no rush, hon,â Ana reassured her. âTake your time.â
Joaquin jogged up to them, sweating through his shirt and trying to catch his breath.
âHave fun?â Y/N asked, snaking an arm around his middle.
âI think Iâll need to rest tomorrow,â he breathed, kissing her hairline. âIâm not as young as I used to be.â
âAh, old man,â she patted his back, making him smile.
After a moment, she gazed at him, âAnaâs right. You look good with a baby in your arms.â
Joaquin fully turned his body toward her, a smile brightening his face. âY/N,â he sang.
âYes, pretty boy?â she teased.
He leaned in close so only she could hear, âI could make you the prettiest babies, mi amor.â
âHold on,â she said, âIâd be the one doing the making.â
âYes, youâre right,â he held her face in his hands. âI could help make you the prettiest babies.â
âNot so fast,â Y/N warned. âMarriage first.â
With an entranced look in his eyes, he slowly lowered himself to the ground.Â
âOh, stop it!â Before his knee could touch the concrete, she forced him to his feet again.
Joaquin smiled wide and kissed her cheek. âI love you.â
âI love you too,â she squeezed his bicep.
Square Filled:Â au: no powers (2024) for @buckybarnesbingo
Authorâs Note:Â any and all comments are appreciated <3
x
You step into the kitchen but keep to the wall in intimidation. Your husband is standing there with his back to you. Heâs shirtless with only a pair of slacks on. Youâre not sure what is more hot. Him being shirtless or dressed in a three-piece suit. He has his phone to his ear so you donât dare interrupt him, scared of what he might do or say to you. Itâs not that youâre scared heâll beat you, itâs just that heâs always so stoic and rarely shows his emotions.
Thereâs something you want to ask him but youâre scared of what heâll do when you ask it. Heâs your husband for god sake. Just go up to him and ask him! Your inner personality isnât as scared of him as you are. You wouldnât be this way if you had married him out of love. No, this marriage was arranged by yours and his parents. You were forced to be his wife, so youâre not even sure he loves you much less likes you.
Still, your marriage meant a truce between your family and his, but that doesnât mean he stopped hating your family.
âAre you just going to stand there or are you going to come in and say something?â
You snap out of your own thoughts and look at Bucky who is now facing you. His shirtless back is almost as delicious as his shirtless front, but youâre too nervous to appreciate the sight in front of you.
âI just wanted to ask you something.â
Bucky looks you up and down, studying your behavior and body language. Youâre jumpy, your hands are sweaty and shaky, and you can barely meet his eyes for more than five seconds.
âWhy do you look so scared?â He smirks. âI wonât bite.â
âMy dad called.â His smirk is lost. âHeâs having a family dinner next week. He wants both of us there.â
âI see.â
âIâd be really happy if you came. He wonât try anything, I promise. Theyâll be on their best behavior.â
âOkay,â Bucky says after a moment.
âWait, really?â
âYouâre my wife. If my father-in-law is asking for dinner, then so be it.â
âOh, okay. Thank you. Itâs next Friday.â You take out your phone. âIâll let him know youâre coming.â
You turn to leave but Buckyâs voice stops you. âOne move.â
âWhat?â
âIf he tries one move, my knife will be lodged in his throat.â
Your eyes widen but you hear the threat loud and clear. You nod and scurry off before he can make any more conditions. Your father is part of one of the biggest crime families New York has ever seen. He has power in every single corner of his jurisdiction. No one can do anything without him knowing about it. Buckyâs family is the other family that has ties to mafia dealings, making them just as powerful as your family.
Both families split New York in half, but theyâre constantly fighting over drugs, property, clubs, money, etc. If it can be used to manipulate and exert power over people, both your families are greedy for the taking, especially if those businesses live on the border of both jurisdictions.
One day, your father met with Buckyâs father about a truce, something they both will want to agree to. This was when your mother was pregnant with you, but he loves to tell the story so you feel like you were practically there. If you were to marry Bucky, then both families would be able to come to agreement on those petty fights.
A truce would be made. The cost? Your freedom. Any children that you may will bear will be part of the biggest crime family this country has ever seen.
When you were old enough, you met Bucky through a family dinner. He came off as stoic, cold, and calculating. He didnât let anything get under his skin. Then, his nieces and nephews joined the party and he became a different person. His hard resolve started melting, giving you a show of who the real Bucky was. Itâs different when heâs in front of business partners and your family, but you have a good idea of who the real Bucky is.
Heâs a mystery, something youâre desperate to solve.
To prepare for the dinner, you decide to go to the gym and hopefully shed a few pounds. Youâve always loved doing cardio, so the treadmill became your best friend. You go so often that the front desk lady knows you by name.
âWelcome, Y/N. Have a good workout.â
âThank you, Betty. I will.â
You walk over to the treadmill and start with a walk to get your blood pumping. You put your headphones in and listen to your favorite podcast. You listen to all sorts of things when you work out but lately, itâs been about the podcasts. Youâre an hour into your workout when someone touches your shoulder. You take out your headphones and look back to see someone you never thought youâd see again.
âVince. What are you doing here?â
âItâs a gym. Iâm working out.â
You look him over and notice heâs not sweaty or red. If heâs been here as long as you have, he hasnât been working out.
âRight. Iâll let you get back to it.â
Youâre about to put your headphones back in when he steps onto the treadmill next to yours. He leans over and rests his elbows on your handlebars, and you immediately stop your machine. Itâs a good time to call it a day.
âI came over here to say hi.â
âI should get going.â
You step off the treadmill and walk over to the cleaning station to grab some paper towels when you feel him standing behind you. You used to feel so safe with him but that all changed when your father discovered a hole in your wall that came from his room which was right next door. He was your bodyguard, supposed to protect you from creeps, and ended up being one. He was truly a pervert.
The only reason why your father didnât kill him was because you didnât want to deal with it. You convinced him to just fire him, so he did. Now heâs back but youâre not sure why. Your father made it very clear that if he tried to come near you again, he would do more than fire him. You turn and find him standing closer than he should be.
âWhat do you want, Vince?â
âJust to talk. Iâve become better. Iâve worked on myself. Iâm ready to go back to work.â
âExcuse me?â
âI want to be your bodyguard again.â
âLike hell, thatâs going to happen. You shouldnât even be here. This isnât even your gym. Just go home.â You step around him to clean your machine but he grabs your upper hard harder than normal. âOw, youâre hurting me.â
âOh, sweetie, you have no idea what pain is. Iâll do more than hurt you if you donât give me my job back. Iâm a good bodyguard. I kept all the creeps away from you.â
âYeah, except for you. Let me go.â
He does but he doesnât move away from you. You have sensitive skin so you know youâll have bruises on your arm from his grip.
âDonât be so shocked if one day you find me inside your house. I know you donât have a bodyguard now.â
You donât need one. You have Bucky. Heâs very possessive and protective over you. Youâre not sure what heâs going to do when he finds out about this, but you can imagine itâs not going to be kind. Crew cleaning your machine. You drop your supplies and rush out of the gym in a panic. During the ride home, you think of ways to lie to Bucky. Heâs going to take one look at your face and know something is wrong.
Youâre a terrible liar, but you canât think of anything because youâre too scared. Scared to the point of tears. Maybe if you sneak inside and run to your room, youâll be able to calm yourself down enough to come up with a convincing lie.
You park in the garage and rush inside knowing Bucky has cameras and sensors for when someone enters the garage. Youâre about to book it up the stairs when you run smack into Buckyâs chest.
âWhereâs the fire?â He sees the panicked look in your eyes and immediately becomes on alert. âWhat happened?â
âNothing. Just an intense workout. Iâm going to take a shower.â
You go to leave but Bucky grabs your arm in the same place as Vince did. You wince and he lets you go immediately thinking he hurt you. His eyes narrow on the bruises Vince let, and the fire in his eyes tells you heâs not going to believe anything but the truth.
âWhat. Happened.â
You have no choice but to tell him the truth before you get in trouble for lying.
âBefore you, I had a bodyguard. He was caught spying on me through a hole he created in my bedroom. He was fired and my father made it clear never to bother me again. Well, he was at the gym. He⊠threatened me⊠saying I shouldnât be surprised if I find him in this house because I donât have a bodyguard now. He⊠wants his job back.â
âOkay.â
Bucky moves around you to go to the garage but you jump in front of him and put your hands on his chest. He looks calm but you know he is fucking pissed. Itâs taking all of your strength to keep him from entering the garage.
âBucky, stop.â
âIf you think I wonât pick you up and move you out of the way, youâve got another thing coming.â
âBucky, please. I will bring this up to my father tomorrow at dinner. Please let my family handle this. He worked for my dad. He should deal with it.â
Bucky looks down and he sees the desperation in your eyes. It doesn't do shit to calm him down but he backs away knowing this is what you want.
âFine.â
Bucky retreats to his office for the rest of the day. Before you know it, Friday has come and youâre walking up the steps to your fatherâs mansion. Youâve been dreading this moment since the gym but you know you have to tell your father about this. Bucky was supposed to ride with you but you hadnât seen him all day.
âOh, sweetheart! Iâm glad youâre here!â your mother says when you walk into the house.
âHi, mom.â She pulls you in for a crushing hug. âYou just saw me last week.â
âI know, but it feels like a lifetime. Where is Bucky?â
âI donât know. Iâm sure heâll be here. He said he would.â Your father walks in and you smile when you see him. âDaddy!â
âPrincess,â he smiles.
You bounce over to him and hug him tightly. Heâs a very tall and muscular man but he has always been gentle with you. Youâre his princess. Youâre his only daughter, so he takes your health and well-being very seriously. You have six brothers but heâs not the same with them as heâs with you. Theyâre just as scary as your father. Youâre not sure why you ever needed a bodyguard when you had six living at home with you.
You join your family in the dining room and greet your brothers. The family butler brings out the food until there is a plate in front of everyone. You look beside you at the empty chair and wonder where Bucky is. Heâs supposed to be here. He said he would. If he had to work, he would have told you.
âSo, Y/N, when am I getting grandbabies?â
âMom!â
âIâm not getting any younger over here.â
âYou have grandbabies. Tony and Luke both have children. Gio has one on the way.â
âNone from you, though.â
âOkay, well, when I get pregnant, youâll be the first to know.â
âWhere is Bucky?â Stefan asks, shoveling food into his mouth as he speaks.
âStefan!â your mother scolds. âDonât eat like an animal.â
âSorry, mom,â he says with his mouth full.
âI donât know. He said heâd be here. Heâs probably caught up with work.â
Once your brothers are finished with their meals, they eagerly go for seconds. The dining room is filled with chatter about peopleâs plans, kids, and trips they have coming up. You never talk about work while youâre eating. Thatâs reserved for after dinner and always over a glass of top-shelf whiskey.
Suddenly, all chatter ceases when someone walks into the dining room. Bucky. Only heâs covered in blood. Blood stains his nice suit and spatters his smooth skin, but he acts as if he has nothing on him. His hands are clean though. He sits next to you and accepts the food the butler brings. He takes a bite of the meat and moans at how good it is.
âIs it taken care of?â your father asks.
âYes, sir.â
Chatter returns as normal as if Bucky isnât covered in fucking blood. Even your brothers donât seem to care that blood is now on the table. Your mother doesnât care that blood is getting on her nice white dining chair. You lean closer to him and grab your napkin. You grab his chin and start wiping the blood from his cheek.
âWhat the hell is the matter with you? Where were you? Why are you covered in blood? Whose is it?â
âVince.â
Now everything makes sense. He must have called your father to tell him what you told him who then told your mother who then told your brothers.
âI told you Iâd handle it.â
âHe touched whatâs mine.â
âExcuse me?â
âHe touched my wife.â
You throw the napkin down knowing itâs useless. âLast I checked, Bucky, you donât own me.â
âNo, you but own me.â Your eyes widen in surprise. âIâd do it again and again to protect you.â He grabs your chin with his clean hand and kisses you. He pulls away from you and wipes away the drop of blood he got on your skin. âEat.â
It takes you several seconds to wrap your brain around what just fucking happened. You grab your fork and take a bite slowly. Maybe there is some warmth to that cold heart.
pairing: avenger!bucky barnes x fem!avenger!younger!reader summary: days after the tipsy night on the couch, you're left wondering what it meant... especially with bucky acting infuriatingly normal. the tension leads to a steamy exchange between the two, where bucky seems to let go of his gentleman manners for a bit. word count: 8.2k warning(s): 18+ explicit content warning, smut, mature themes, light swearing, some power dynamics, alcohol consumption/intoxication (references to past use), fluff, use of nicknames, age gap, mutual confusion a/n: if you saw the original part two before i deleted it... no u didn't :) i was so shocked by the love of the first part and was super unprepared to make a second, so i made a few indecisive choice lol. i really hope you enjoy :) and if you do, please feel free to like, comment, or reblog! <3 also, requests are open!
art deco - lana del rey
a few days had passed since that night on the sofa. it was almost as if it had never happened. you were spiraling, wondering if you had imagined it during your drunken haze. you kept replaying that night on the couch, unsure if it was real or some alcohol-fueled fantasy. the only confirmation? the teamâs constant teasing.
but bucky? that asshole was silent as ever.
bucky never reacted. he simply ignored the comments. even when the group had found you on the couch and battered you with questions, his expression remained neutral, as if he had no reason to feel awkward. the amount of comments made by tony that he just brushed off was impressive. you, on the other hand, were a flustered, hungover mess.
not to mention you hadnât really talked to bucky much since then.
well, you had⊠technically. a few "good mornings," maybe a nod across the gym⊠nothing that really counted. nothing that explained any of the tension. maybe he was just being friendly, and you misread it. but you couldnât shake the feeling that something was different in the way he acted around you. he started sitting closer during movie nights⊠he'd taunt you and give you a playful smirk every time you so much as tripped on a training mat. it was such a stark difference to how he treated you before that night. he was treating you like a friend, which made you consider whether you wanted him to treat you as something more or not. whether you wanted his hands on you againâŠ
now, you found yourself still in your gear after a mission, standing in front of your mirror. you had been struggling with the straps of your vest, too exhausted to deal with any of it. the fabric was tight, and the clasps just wouldnât come undone.
you hadnât even realized bucky was standing in the doorway, watching you, until he stood in front of you.
he likely had heard your grunts of frustration and came to check on you. perfect asshole.
"having trouble?" he gently started removing the straps, helping you out of your gear slowly.
was he doing this on purpose? could he not tell how your breathing became more shallow when he did shit like that? maybe he was torturing you.
"why do you always seem to be helping me out of clothing?" you asked, not realizing how dirty-minded it actually sounded until he snickered, causing your face to go red.
god⊠he's so hot when he makes that smug ass face.
"you know what i meanâ" you rushed to clarify, but he was already smirking.
"you mean those pretty little heels from the other night?" he chuckled, putting your gear away. he turned back to you, closing the distance a little, "you remember that?"
so, you hadn't imagined it. it had actually happened. all this time, he had thought you didnât remember⊠you felt a little relieved.
how could you NOT remember? you couldn't look at him all week without feeling yourself get hot.
the adrenaline from his closeness caused your head to swim a bit, "of course i do, 'doll.' i was tipsy, not blackout drunk," you smirked, meeting his gaze, refusing to look away.
bucky grinned, watching you with an amused expression.
"really? you could've fooled me. i thought you forgot the whole thing, or were pretending to."
"what's that supposed to mean?" you narrowed your eyes, still smiling subtly.
you would've never wanted to forget it.
he hummed, "i dunno. you've just been acting kind of distant since that night. you're a little young. thought i might've went too far."
went too far? hell, he didn't go far enough.
you scoffed playfully, tilting your head, "you scared of me or something, old man?"
you didn't think your next words through, unable to stop yourself from just saying what you were thinking, "you didn't go far enoughâŠ" your voice came out as a whisper.
you could see that cocky look in his eyes start to break. he bit his lip, shaking his head, "you're killing me, doll. here i am trying to be a gentlemanâŠ"
his smirk returned as he stepped closer, "unless you'd like me to stop trying."
all you had to do was give him a nod before his lips smashed onto yours.
the kiss was heated and rough. his hands were roaming all over your body, your fingers tangling into his hair.
he groaned into your mouth, one hand gripping your hip while the other wrapped around the back of your neck like heâd been dying to do this for weeks.
"this what you wanted, doll?" he murmured against your lips. you could feel the smirk.
"i want more," you breathed, gripping onto his shoulders.
his metal hand slid beneath your combat gear top, fingers tracing up your spine. cool against the heat of your skin. his touch was teasing. almost maddeningly slow.
"you sure you can handle more, sweetheart?" he whispered into your neck, lips brushing skin with every word. "you're already shaking."
you were. damn it. the adrenaline rush was affecting you physically.
"shut up," you muttered, trying to push at his chest â not really meaning it. âasshole.â
âthatâs more like it,â he grinned. âthatâs my girl.â
my girl.
your breath caught.
he noticed. of course he did. you could practically feel his cocky smirk against your neck.
bucky pulled back just enough to look at you again, eyes flicking across your face. you could see the restraint in his eyes⊠like he was holding himself back, waiting for a sign.
so you gave him one.
one hand slid under his shirt, palms grazing the lines of his abs. your other hand fiddled with his belt. you leaned in, kissed him slow, more deliberate this time. no rush. no panic. just want. desire.
he responded instantly, like heâd been waiting for this since that night on the sofa. his hands gripped your waist, walking you backward until your shoulder blades hit the nearest wall.
âtell me to stop,â he murmured against your lips, voice ragged.
you didnât. obviously.
instead, you dragged his shirt up over his head. that vibranium arm came to rest on the wall beside your head, bracing him, and you, as he pressed closer. the cool of the metal contrasted with the heat of his body, and it made you shiver.
he smiled against your jaw. âstill shaking.â
"still an asshole." you snapped back, slightly breathless.
his hand traveled under your top again, âyouâre not wearing anything under this,â he muttered, almost like he was scolding himself. âyoung people these daysâŠâ he joked, grinning again.
âthen donât waste time,â you said breathlessly, tugging at his belt.
that did it.
sloppy make out. hands everywhere. your shirt joined his on the floor.
he guided you to the bed, carefully, like he was still asking permission with every step. even in the heat of it, he was gentle. attentive. like if he didnât handle you right, youâd vanish. still a perfect gentleman.
once there, he wasted no time. he helped you out of your pants, pulling your panties off with them. hovering above you, he moved down, closer to where you needed him most.
âyouâre beautiful,â he murmured into your inner thighs, almost like he didnât mean to say it out loud.
âbuckyââ you breathed, fingers tangling in his hair again as you felt his tongue on your clit.
the way he moved was practiced, but not detached. it was about you. every reaction he pulled from you only made him more desperate, more focused. it wasnât long before your voice was breaking on his name, back arching off the mattress as he took you apart with nothing but his mouth.
when he finally came up for air, pupils blown, lips swollen, hair messy from your fingers⊠he simply smirked.
god... he was killing you.
âstill want more?â
you nodded, dazed. âgod, yes.â
he crawled back over you, leaving a trail of gentle kisses on your skin in his wake.
and when he finally sank into you â need seemed to claw through the both of you, hot and impatient.
not rushed, but there was urgency.
it built slowly until you were unraveling in his arms, and he followed with a groan against your throat.
he held onto you like he had done on the couch that night. when you had fallen asleep in his arms.
for a while, you just lay there, both letting out laughs of disbelief.
"guess chivalry is dead," you joked, flashing him a mischievous smile.
"oh, really?" he gave you an amused grin. "i tried to be a gentleman. you told me to stop trying."
thanks so much for reading <3 requests are open!
between book pages and baked pies (r.r.)
summary : He came in on Thursdays. Always looking for new books to read. Always smiled like he didnât quite belong anywhere. Then, you asked him to pretend to be your boyfriend for one night. And he said yes.
Then you found out heâs the Sentry â
and suddenly, pretending doesnât feel so simple anymore.
pairing : robert 'bob' reynolds x reader / sentry x reader
content : basically just fluff, fakedating!au, fakeboyfriend!au
warnings : none
word count : 7k
Thursday, 10:43 am.
You glance up, and there he is.
Youâve seen him before. Always on Thursdays, always around the same time. Always with that same energy â like he doesnât quite belong to this world, or maybe just doesnât expect to be noticed in it.
He has messy hair, a too-worn jacket, and the kind of posture that says please donât ask me anything, but Iâm also not in a hurry to leave.
Today, for the first time, he meets your eyes.
You smile. âBack again. Thatâs three Thursdays in a row.â
He blinks, like heâs surprised youâve been keeping count.
ââŠI like it here,â he says, voice quiet but not shy. Just gentle.
âMost people say that when theyâre avoiding something,â you joke lightly, leaning your elbows on the counter. âBad day?â
He shrugs. âItâs a day.â
Fair.
He heads toward the fantasy section, the same corner he always drifts to. You try not to stare â you really do â but itâs hard not to watch the way he slows down at the shelves like theyâre familiar terrain.
After a few minutes, he returns with two paperbacks â both epic fantasy, both with weathered covers and dramatic titles like The Hollow Crown and Ash and Sovereign.
You ring them up, sneaking a glance. âYou like the ones where the world almost ends?â
He gives a faint smile. âSometimes I like when it doesnât.â
You pause, curious. âYou a writer?â
He shakes his head. âNo. Just⊠a fan.â
âI get it,â you say, handing him the bag. âBooks are a safer way to live dangerously.â
He smiles at that. A little more real.
Then, on impulse, you ask, âSo, what do you do?â
He hesitates just a second longer than most people would.
ââŠSometimes I help save the world,â he says, deadpan.
You blink. And then you laugh, because thereâs something about the way he says it â so dry and sincere â that itâs obviously a joke. Or at least⊠you think it is.
âWow,â you grin. âThatâs bold. You a firefighter or a Marvel cosplayer?â
He shrugs one shoulder. âSomething like that.â
You hand him his receipt, eyes narrowing playfully. âWell, mysterious world-saver, if you ever want book recommendations, let me know. Weâve got a great section for heroes with identity crises.â
He nods, turning toward the door. âIâll keep that in mind.â
Heâs almost gone when he pauses and looks back.
âWhatâs your name?â he asks you, and you tell him.
He nods once. âIâm Bob.â
Then heâs gone.
The bell chimes again â sharper this time. Final.
You stand there for a moment, watching the door swing closed behind him. Then you shake your head and go back to restocking the display.
Still, for some reason, you keep thinking about him.
Bob.
âËâĄ
Your phone lights up with the most dangerous contact in your list: Mom.
You stare at it for a second, debating whether to let it go to voicemail.
Then you sigh, hit accept, and brace yourself.
âHi, sweetheart!â your momâs voice practically sings as you answer. âI was starting to think youâd forgotten how to use a phone.â
You smile, mouth full of lukewarm noodles. âHi, Mom. You called me yesterday.â
âI know, I just missed you. So sue me.â
Thereâs a beat where you brace yourself. And sure enoughâ
âSo, listen,â she continues, far too casually. âNext Saturday weâre doing dinner at our place. Just the usual â your aunts, cousins, possibly Grandma if we can coax her out of her crosswords. Nothing formal, but, you know, nice.â
âMmhmm.â You sip your drink, waiting.
âWe were thinking 6 oâclock. And of course weâll do something vegetarian for youâoh, and listen, your cousin Chelsea is bringing that new boyfriend. Super cute. Works in finance. Wears suits on weekends. Can you imagine?â
There it is.
âAnyway,â she adds, far too lightly, âI just thought Iâd ask â are you seeing anyone these days? Anyone worth bringing?â
You snort. âBringing where? Into the lionâs den of a family dinner?â
âOh come on,â she laughs. âWeâre not that bad.â
You give her a look she canât see. âLast time Aunt Diane tried to set me up with her neighborâs chiropractor, and Uncle Marty asked if Iâd frozen my eggs.â
âShe meant well. He didnât, butâstill.â
You roll your eyes. âNo, Mom. Iâm not bringing anyone.â
âYouâre not?â Her voice dips into gentle disappointment. âNot even just as a friend? You have such a sweet personality. I feel like people must just gravitate to you.â
You hum noncommittally, casually glancing toward your bookshelf. Your eyes drift to the spot where you keep returns and holds â including two fantasy books still waiting for a certain quiet customer to pick up.
You think of Bob, his soft smile, the way he said âSometimes I help save the worldâ like it wasnât even strange.
But you say nothing.
âAnyway,â your mom chirps on. âNo pressure. Just⊠you know. Youâre not getting any less amazing with time.â
âThatâs not how time works, Mom.â
âSemantics. Just let me know, okay? Weâll keep a seat open. Just in case.â
You sigh and mutter, âOkay.â
Sheâs already launching into a story about a raccoon in the neighborâs shed by the time you close your eyes and groan into your throw pillow.
You definitely donât have a date.
You definitely donât need one.
âŠBut your brain is already wondering what Bob looks like when heâs not rain-damp and bookstore quiet.
âËâĄ
Tuesday, 11:07 am.
The bell over the door rings, and â like clockwork â you glance up.
There he is.
Bob.
Same as always, but also⊠not. His jacketâs still weathered, but he looks a little more put-together today. Hair slightly neater. Like maybe he didnât get caught in a wind tunnel on the way over. Less cryptid, more mysterious traveler passing through town.
He doesnât say anything at first. Just gives a quick scan of the room before heading straight for the back... for the fantasy section. His usual.
You try not to smile.
Try.
âTuesday this time?â you call out from behind the counter, tone light. âSwitching it up?â
Bob glances over, mouth tugging up slightly. âHad some time.â
You nod, watching as his hand drifts over the table display near the entrance â new paperbacks, some with gold foil titles and overdramatic taglines. He doesnât stop there long. Just a brush of his fingers across the covers before moving on.
âYou sure itâs not just the emotionally damaged swordsmen calling to you again?â you add, moving toward a nearby shelf with a stack of returns.
He raises a brow, pausing in front of a familiar book. âMaybe I like consistency.â
âBold choice in this economy.â
That gets you a huff of amusement, soft and unexpected.
He picks up The Lantern War â you know the one. Mid-trilogy. Sad prince. Betrayals. Youâve read it twice and cried both times. He opens it, flipping through the first few pages with surprising care, like heâs searching for something he might have missed the last time he held it.
You lean against a nearby shelf, casually.
âYou know,â you begin, tone half-teasing, âyou donât talk much, but youâve got this whole mysterious loner with a tragic past thing going on.â
Bob looks up â startled, but not annoyed. Just a little caught off guard.
âPeople pay for that kind of vibe on dating apps,â you add quickly, before you lose your nerve.
He blinks.
You wince. âSorry. That was weird. Iâve just⊠been talking to my mom too much lately. Sheâs on this campaign to get me to bring someone to a family dinner and now I think Iâm starting to project âpotential boyfriend materialâ onto every semi-normal customer.â
Bob doesnât laugh, exactly â but something close. A breath. A smile. Small and real.
âIâll take that as a compliment,â he says, gently placing the book under his arm.
You nod. âIt was meant to be one.â
The air shifts then. Not awkward â not yet â but quieter. You both stand there for a beat too long, not speaking. The store is still around you: soft music playing low, dust motes catching in the light near the windows, the occasional creak of the building settling. Cozy, lived-in quiet.
You watch him for a second longer than you should.
He always lingers when heâs here. Not like heâs killing time. Like heâs⊠catching his breath.
You donât say it â not aloud, not now. But something clicks. The beginnings of an idea. Stupid, insane, utterly desperate.
Still.
As he approaches the counter, you glance at him sideways.
He wouldnât. Thatâs insane. Would he?
He pays in cash, always cash, and nods politely.
âThanks,â he says.
âSee you Thursday?â you ask, voice light, playful.
He pauses, then shrugs. âMaybe.â
You watch him step back out into the sunlight, his silhouette framed by the door before it swings closed behind him. The bell chimes again. He disappears down the street, a figure in motion.
And youâre still watching the door when the next customer steps up and gently clears their throat.
Right. Work.
You turn back to the register, hands moving automatically â scanning books, making small talk â but your brainâs somewhere else.
âËâĄ
âHi, honey!â she sings the second you answer. âDonât panic â this is not a âguilt you into bringing a boyfriendâ call.â
You snort. âYou literally said the word âboyfriendâ in the first sentence.â
âOkay, technically,â she says, unfazed, âbut Iâm just calling about the family dinner this Saturday.â
You sigh and lean against the counter. âI know, I know. 6 p.m., casserole, deeply invasive questions from Aunt Dianeââ
âOh, speaking of Aunt Diane,â she says sweetly, which shouldâve been your warning, âshe knows this great guy from her pickleball leagueâworks in insurance, divorced once, only a little bitter. She wants to bring him to dinner for you to meet.
Your stomach sinks.
You stare at your fridge like it might offer an escape hatch.
âIâMom, no.â
âWell, honey,â she says, trying for innocent, âyou havenât said youâre bringing anyone. And if youâre still singleââ
âIâm not.â
Silence.
Your heart drops into your socks. You scramble.
âI mean. I am. Seeing someone. Kind of. Itâs been, like, a month.â
A pause. Too long.
âYou are?â she says slowly.
You wince. âYeah. I didnât want to bring him because, you know, the whole interrogation-by-relatives thing. I didnât want to scare him off. Heâs⊠kind of shy.â
Your mom gasps like you just told her sheâs finally getting a grandchild.
âOh my god, why didnât you tell me sooner?! Whatâs he like? Is he nice? Where did you meet? Does he like dogs?â
âMom, calm down,â you say quickly, pacing now. âHeâs just⊠quiet. And really kind. And, you know. Nice.â
You mentally kick yourself.
âWell, now you have to bring him,â she insists. âIf heâs already survived a month with you, heâs clearly got staying power.â
You laugh sharply. âGee, thanks.â
She chuckles. âIâm just saying â you never bring anyone. This is a big deal.â
You force a smile into your voice. âLet me talk to him first, okay? Iâll see if heâs up for it.â
âPromise me youâll try.â
ââŠPromise.â
You hang up, staring at your reflection in the microwave door.
Mouth open. Brain screaming.
You just fake-dated someone in a conversation.
Now all you have to do is actually find someone to play the boyfriend youâve apparently been dating for a month.
You think of Bob. The quiet guy who reads about broken heroes and once joked about saving the world.
And for some godforsaken reasonâŠ
âŠyou think he might actually say yes.
âËâĄ
Thursday, 12:45 pm
Itâs raining again.
Of course it is.
A slow, steady drizzle beads against the front windows, softening the city outside into watercolor shapes. Inside, the shop smells like paper and cedar polish, with a hint of peppermint from the tin you cracked open after lunch. A jazz cover of something vaguely familiar plays from the old speakers near the register, barely audible over the patter of rain and your quiet muttering.
âTwo days late on the shipment, again, and if they swap my fantasy order with true crime one more timeââ you grumble under your breath, balancing a stack of returns against your hip as you shuffle toward the front display. âWho even wants twelve copies of Stabbing for Dummies?â
You sigh, crouch to fit the bottom shelf, and toss a glance at the fogged-up door.
âI swear, if one more teenager asks where we keep the smut, Iâm moving to the mountains. Iâll sell rocks. Iâll become a rock girl.â
The bell above the door chimes.
Right on cue.
You straighten just a little too fast and nearly drop a paperback. âWelcome in,â you call absently, trying to sound composed â but you already know.
Itâs him.
You donât need to look.
Still, you do â and there he is.
Bob stands just inside the doorway, rain misted in his hair, the shoulders of his dark green hoodie slightly damp beneath a black denim jacket. His jeans are worn in the knees. The laces of his boots are uneven. He looks like he walked through the rain on purpose, like the storm outside didnât even try to stop him.
Thereâs a quietness to him that doesnât feel awkward anymore. Just familiar.
âBack to your usual Thursday shift?â you ask, setting a book down and turning toward him fully now.
He gives a one-shoulder shrug. âIt felt wrong not to.â
Thereâs something steadier about him today. He still carries that bone-deep kind of tired â like his bodyâs been holding something heavy for too long â but his gaze doesnât flick away as fast when your eyes meet. He lets the quiet settle for a beat before moving deeper into the store.
You catch yourself smoothing your shirt before following him.
âLet me guess,â you say as he veers toward the back. âFantasy section?â
âAlways.â
You trail a few paces behind, grabbing a book thatâs been reshelved in the wrong genre. Thereâs no one else in the store right now. Just the two of you, and the occasional whisper of rain against the windows.
He stops in front of a display and picks up The Sword Beneath the Throne. Studies the cover like it holds some secret he hasnât cracked yet.
You rest your elbow against a shelf. âThat oneâs going to wreck you emotionally,â you warn, teasing. âBut, you know. In a noble sacrifice kind of way.â
Bob glances over. âGood to know.â
You hesitate â just for a second. Then you inhale, let the moment linger, and say: âHey⊠can I ask you something kind of weird?â
His eyes shift to yours â cautious, but open.
âSure.â
You clear your throat, suddenly aware of every sound in the store. âSo⊠hypothetically,â you begin, with what you hope is a breezy tone, âif someone were being â letâs say â aggressively pressured by their entire family to bring a boyfriend to a dinnerâlike, a big oneââ
âOkay,â he says slowly, still holding the book.
âAnd they may or may not have panicked and told said family theyâd already been dating someone for a month⊠someone who does not, technically, existââ
Bobâs brow arches slightly, the corner of his mouth twitching.
âGo on."
âWould it be completely unhinged to ask you to maybe⊠pretend to be that person? Just for a night. Three hours max. Thereâs pie.â
Silence.
Bob doesnât laugh. Doesnât recoil.
He just watches you.
And you, of course, rush in to fill the quiet.
âI know itâs weird. And probably creepy. And I swear Iâm not dangerous. You donât even really know me. But youâre the only person I know who could pull off being quiet and normal enough to not scare my mom or make my aunts think Iâm secretly dating a war criminal.â
His expression shifts â thoughtful now, not unreadable. Still holding the book, but not looking at it anymore.
âAnd if it helps,â you add quickly, âI already told them youâre shy. So you wouldnât even have to say much. Just⊠look human. Maybe compliment the stuffing. Smile once. Pretend Iâm charming.â
He tilts his head slightly.
âYou want me to pretend to be your boyfriend?â
âJust for a night,â you say. âNo pressure. No long con. Just mashed potatoes and survival.â
ââŠBecause your mom threatened you with a pickleball player.â
You blink. âWait. How do youâ?â
âYou talk while you shelve books,â he says simply, mouth quirking. âI pick things up.â
You gape at him for a beat. Then snort.
And then laugh. A real one. It escapes before you can stop it â bright and ridiculous and yours.
Bob⊠smiles.
Itâs small. A blink-and-youâll-miss-it thing. But itâs there.
âSo?â you say, biting your lip. âWould you consider it? I canât offer much. Just pie. And probably embarrassing levels of gratitude.â
He sets the book down.
Looks at you.
A long moment passes.
âOkay,â he says.
You blink. âWait â really?â
He nods, like itâs the simplest thing in the world. âWhy not.â
âYou didnât even ask what kind of pie.â
âI trust your judgment.â
You squint at him. âYouâre either the nicest person alive, or wildly unhinged yourself.â
Bob shrugs. âCanât it be both?â
Something in your chest tightens â in a good way.
âDinnerâs Saturday,â you say softly. âAt my parentsâ. Here's... the address?â you added as you handed him a yellow post-it note with your parent's address in red ink, which was actually written not even ten minutes before.
You wrote it thinking that there's an 80% chance he'll accept it.
And he actually did.
He nods. âShould I wear something nice?â
âHonestly,â you say, âif you show up looking like less of a cryptid than usual, my family will be thrilled.â
âIâll see what I can do.â
He turns to leave, hood pulled up lazily as he disappears into the rainy street â a figure blurred by drizzle and glass.
And you?
You stand behind the counter, staring after him.
Your hands are a little shaky. Not from nerves.
From relief. And something else.
Excitement, maybe.
Because somehow, against all logic and odds â
Bob said yes.
âËâĄ
Saturday, 5:49 pm
âNot too much sugar,â your mom says over your shoulder, peeking into the mixing bowl as if she doesnât trust you with a spoon.
You hold the measuring cup up dramatically. âMom, youâve raised me. If I die of poor pie proportions, itâs on you.â
She snorts and hands you the nutmeg. âDonât tempt me.â
You smile, despite yourself. The kitchen is warm in that nostalgic way â cluttered, golden light filtering in through the curtains, something soft playing from the old speaker by the fridge. Youâre elbow-deep in pie filling, sleeves rolled up, and trying not to think about how insane this all is.
Youâve told everyone youâve been dating someone for a month.
That heâs meeting your family.
That heâs sweet and shy and real.
And in about fifteen minutes, Bob â your fake boyfriend â will be at the door.
Youâre 85% sure heâll show up. Maybe 90.
âŠOkay, 75.
âDo you need help with the crust?â your mom asks, and for once, she sounds like sheâs trying not to pry.
You glance at her. Sheâs avoiding eye contact. She definitely wants to pry.
âNope,â you say, pressing the dough into the pan. âUnless this is a metaphor for my love life, in which case, yeah, I could use a full support team.â
She hums noncommittally and starts slicing apples, her back to you.
âSo,â she says, âyou never told me how you met him.â
You hesitate. âThe guy Iâmâbringing tonight?â
She nods. âMhm.â
You stall by rinsing your hands.
âItâs kind of a quiet story,â you say carefully. âWe kept running into each other. Same place, same time. It just⊠kind of happened.â
âHm.â She tosses apple slices into the bowl. âAnd you like him?â
You look down at the dough beneath your fingers. Think about his awkward smile. The way he listens like it costs him something. The warmth in his voice when he said, âThanks for inviting me.â
You nod. âI think I do.â
Your mom looks over, something soft in her face now.
âWell,â she says gently, âI canât wait to meet him.â
You smile and slide the pie into the oven just as the doorbell rings.
Your heart stops.
Your mom turns toward the sound.
You wipe your hands on a towel and take a breath.
âOkay,â you mutter to yourself, âmoment of truth.â
You walk to the door.
And open it...
You expected nerves.
You did not expect him to look like this.
Bob stands on your porch like he walked out of a cologne ad and got lost on the way to GQ. His dark button-up is rolled at the sleeves, fitted just enough to draw attention to muscles he normally hides under worn hoodies. His hairâusually floppy and rain-wreckedâis now styled neatly back, just messy enough to look effortless.
You blink. âH-hi.â
He smilesâbashful, but sure of himself. âHi.â
Before you can gather your thoughts or your dignity, he leans in and kisses you on the cheek. Itâs warm, brief, but confident. His hand grazes your waist like muscle memory.
âI hope Iâm not too early,â he murmurs.
âNoâuhâno, perfect. Youâre perfect. I mean, the timing. The timing is perfect.â
You step back to let him in, praying no one heard that.
As he crosses the threshold, he glances around, eyes scanning photos on the walls, shelves stacked with family memories. You take his coat. His scent lingers â fresh and faintly minty.
âMy momâs in the kitchen. Brace yourself.â
He chuckles. âNoted.â
You walk him into the war zone of casserole dishes and cousin chaos.
Your mom spots you both from the dining room and gasps like sheâs just been cast on a reality show. âThere he is! You must be Bob!â
Bob blinks for a moment, surprised she already knows his name. You shoot her a look that says Mom, please, I am begging.
He recovers quickly. âYes, maâam.â
âAnd polite!â she says, delighted, patting his arm like sheâs already ordering him to call her âMomâ by dessert.
Dinner unfolds in a blur. Plates are passed, stories fly around the table like darts, and somehow Bob navigates it like a pro. He even laughs at your uncleâs tired jokes. When your grandma comments on his posture, he adjusts with a quiet âYes, maâamâ that makes her beam.
At one point, your youngest cousin, Milo, squints at him from across the table.
âYou look really familiar,â Milo says, tilting his head.
You freeze mid-chew. Bobâs fork pauses halfway to his mouth.
âI get that a lot,â Bob says calmly.
Milo frowns. âLike, weirdly familiar. Likeâsuperhero familiar.â
âMilo,â your mom cuts in, âeat your green beans.â
Milo shrugs but keeps sneaking glances.
You let out the breath you didnât know you were holding.
And about halfway through dessert, something happens.
The TV is on behind your momâs head, low volume. Just the news playing â no oneâs really watching. Your dadâs closest to it, half turned in his chair, focused on his pie.
Youâre listening to your aunt ramble about her new garden mulch when the news anchorâs voice shifts tone.
ââdramatic footage of the Thunderboltsâ mission this past Wednesdayââ
Your brain barely registers it.
You glance at the screen.
Explosions. Screaming. Concrete cracking like bones.
A familiar flash of red and blackâJohn Walker. Then Ghost phasing through debris.
And thenâ
Golden light. Blinding, unmistakable.
The Sentry.
A blurred shot becomes a close-up.
Heâs floating mid-air. Hair wild, cape tattered, jaw clenched in focus. Glowing.
Itâs not grainy enough to deny. The face is clear. The posture. The jawline.
You choke on your pie. Eyes widening.
Bob.
You snap your gaze toward him.
He doesnât move, but his fork slowly lowers.
Your eyes dart to your dad. Heâs starting to turn toward the screen.
Before he can reactâclick.
The TV cuts off.
Silence.
Your dad frowns. âDid the TV break again?â
Bob shrugs, wiping his mouth with his napkin.
Your relatives resume their conversations without a second thought. Bread is passed. Laughter resumes. No oneâs the wiser.
Except for you.
And Milo, who is now staring at Bob with slack-jawed awe.
You place your fork down slowly. Your pulse is in your throat.
Bob meets your gaze across the table. Calm. Cautious.
You clear your throat.
âHey,â you say sweetly, plastering on a smile. âCan you excuse us for a second? I just need to talk to my boyfriend for a minute.â
He rises without protest.
You grab his arm, steer him down the hallway... past photos of you in braces, past the coat rack, past everything normal, and into the dim, quiet hallway near the laundry room.
Then you turn, look up at him, and whisperâ
âWhat the hell, Bob?â
You shut the door behind you.
Bob leans casually against the wall â too casually â like he isnât literally the man you just saw hovering over a burning building on national television.
You cross your arms. âOkay. Start talking.â
He looks down at his hands, fingers laced. Thereâs a strange stillness to him, like heâs waiting for a storm he knows is coming.
âI didnât lie,â he says quietly.
You stare. âBob. I watched you on the news. You turned off my parentsâ TV. With your mind.â
âI said I help people,â he replies, looking up at you now. Calm. Earnest. âSometimes I help save the world.â
You gape. âI thought you meant you were a firefighter. Or a teacher! Or like, I donât know, a really good therapist!â
He huffs a soft laugh. âSorry. That probably wouldâve been easier.â
âYouâreââ You lower your voice, leaning in. âYouâre The Sentry. Youâre an actual Avenger. OrâThunderbolt. Orâwhatever the hell team youâre on.â
âTechnically, Iâm sort of on loan.â
You give him a look. âThat's not the point.â
Heâs quiet again. But not defensive. Not evasive. Just⊠waiting. Letting you process.
And you are processing.
All the little things you overlooked:
The quiet strength in how he moved.
The weird evasiveness.
The stormy energy he sometimes carried like he was trying to keep it bottled.
You exhale, the adrenaline finally catching up.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â you ask, softer now.
âI didnât want you to treat me differently,â he says. âI liked the bookstore. I liked that you didnât know. You talked to me like I was just⊠Bob.â
You blink. âIs that your real name?â
âYes.â
âAnd you really read fantasy novels?â
He actually smiles. âEspecially the sad ones.â
You hesitate. Your heart is still pounding, but your voice softens even more.
âYou came to dinner,â you murmur. âYou sat through my uncleâs knee replacement story. You complimented my grandmaâs brooch.â
He lifts a shoulder. âWasnât hard. I meant it.â
You stare at him.
The man who eats lemon muffins on Thursdays.
The man who shyly kissed your cheek.
The man who casually shut off a television with his brain.
You rub a hand over your face. âI dragged The Sentry into a fake dating scheme because my mom thinks Iâm undateable.â
His voice is gentle. âYou didnât drag me. I said yes.â
You glance up at him. âWhy?â
His gaze softens. âBecause you asked.â
You swallow.
He takes a step closer. His voice lowers, almost shy again. âIf you want to call this off now, Iâll understand. Iâll tell them we broke up before dessert. I can cry if it helps.â
You laugh â a short, startled sound â but it breaks some of the tension.
You look up at him. âYouâd really do that?â
âIâm a very convincing fake ex.â
Youâre quiet for a moment. Heâs still standing there â not defensive, not cocky â just Bob. The same Bob who buys fantasy novels and waits for you to recommend the good ones.
The same Bob who just blew your entire reality to pieces.
And yetâŠ
You find yourself saying, âLetâs just get through dessert.â
His brows raise slightly. âYou sure?â
You nod. âWe can panic later.â
He smiles. A real one. Small. Grateful.
âOkay,â he says. âBack to the pie.â
You nod, open the hallway door, and walk back toward the dining room together â fake-dating The Sentry, one awkward spoonful of whipped cream at a time.
You return to the dining room with Bob beside you, and despite the mini-crisis that just played out in the hallway, somehow⊠everything continues like nothing happened.
The pieâs been sliced. Plates passed around. The table is filled with the comforting hum of your family talking over each other, laughing, sneaking bites of dessert before their coffee cools.
Bob slips into his seat beside you, and when your mom asks if he wants whipped cream, he nods and says, âYes, maâam,â with a small smile.
She beams.
You stare at him for a second longer than you should.
Heâs calm. Almost too calm. Like heâs pretending to be human in a sitcom, and somehow nailing the part.
Milo wonât stop glancing over, like heâs replaying the Thunderbolts footage in his head. But thankfully, he keeps his mouth shut.
You press your knee against Bobâs under the table.
He glances at you.
You mouth: Thank you.
He just nods.
âËâĄ
When the dishes are finally cleared and your aunts start hunting for their coats, you help your mom carry plates to the kitchen. Sheâs humming. Actually humming.
You try not to let guilt claw at your chest.
After a few minutes, coats are zipped, goodbyes are exchanged, and your mom pats Bobâs arm like heâs already part of the family. Your dad claps him on the back and says, âYou handled the chaos pretty well, son. Thatâs promising.â
Youâre still not sure whether thatâs a compliment or a threat.
Finally, itâs just the two of you at the door.
You walk Bob out onto the porch. The skyâs dark, but the porch light gives his face a warm glow. You wrap your arms around yourself, partly from the cool air, partly because you donât know what to do with them anymore.
âIâm sorry,â you say quietly, leaning against the railing. âI dragged you into that mess because I panicked and lied to my mom and I never expected you to actually say yes or look like that orââ
Bob steps forward and kisses you.
Soft. Sure. Warm.
It happens in the span of a heartbeat â his hand resting gently on your cheek, the kiss itself lingering just long enough to make you forget where you are.
When he pulls back, he whispers, âSorry.â
You blink, stunned.
He jerks his thumb toward the window beside the front door.
You turn.
Your mom is standing there, mostly hidden behind the curtain â watching. Her expression is somewhere between victorious and smug.
You groan. âOh my god.â
Bob chuckles. âSheâs committed. I respect it.â
You shake your head, trying not to smile. âThat was mean.â
âThat was method acting,â he teases.
You hesitate, then reach out and fix the collar of his jacket. âYou really didnât have to do all this.â
âI wanted to,â he says. âI meant what I said â I liked being asked.â
A beat.
âI still do.â
The air between you shifts â warmer now, quiet but honest.
You nod once, not sure what to say. Not sure what this is becoming.
He opens the gate and starts to walk down the path. Just before he disappears into the dark, he turns back.
âIâll see you Tuesday?â
You smile. âTuesday.â
And then heâs gone.
You close the door gently, heart fluttering like itâs trying to tell you something. You lean against the wood for a second, exhale, and whisper to no one:
ââŠOh no.â
âËâĄ
Sunday, 7:36 am
It starts like any other day.
You stop at your usual corner café, order your iced coffee (half sweet, extra ice, just the way you like it), and wrap your hands around the plastic cup like it might ground you.
For a moment, the world feels normal.
You walk the next block with your earbuds in, the playlist soothing, the city humming gently around you. It isnât until you pass the magazine stand by the subway entrance that something feels⊠off.
Your eyes drift lazily over the covers as you walk by.
And then you see it.
Front and center. Bold red font. A full-page photo.
âWHO IS THE SENTRYâS MYSTERY GIRLFRIEND?â (Shocking New Romance Revealed â Civilian Involved?)
You stop mid-step. Your breath catches.
Your own face stares back at you from under a blur of porch lights and lipstick smudged from a very real, very public kiss.
You nearly drop your coffee right there.
But it only gets worse.
Because as you turn the corner toward the bookstore â just a normal Tuesday morning â you donât see the usual handful of early customers waiting for the shop to open.
You see a crowd.
No â not a crowd. A swarm.
Microphones. Cameras. People standing on tiptoes, phones raised high, shouting questions at⊠nothing, because the store isnât even open yet.
Your stomach drops.
Your name gets shouted from somewhere in the noise.
And then, mercifully â your brain does the one logical thing.
It panics.
You spin around. Your foot hits the curb. Your coffee slips from your hand, hits the sidewalk, and explodes in a cold, sticky splash.
âHeyâhey! Thatâs her!â someone yells behind you.
You donât look back.
You duck into the narrow alley between the bookstore and the laundromat, heart hammering, air slicing sharp into your lungs.
Your mind is racing with every terrible headline, every awkward question your mom is probably getting right now, and how very not normal your life has become.
And thenâ
âHiii.â
You scream.
A figure drops from the fire escape like itâs nothing, landing in front of you with the elegance of a spy movie villain and the expression of someone who just finished a cinnamon roll.
Blonde. Tactical jacket. Combat boots. Sunglasses perched on her head like she accessorized mid-mission.
She smiles. âSo. Youâre the girlfriend?â
You stumble back a step, heart in your throat. âIâIâmâwho are you?!â
âYelena,â she says cheerfully, offering a hand like this is a brunch date. âBobâs teammate. Sometimes assassin. Donât worry, Iâm nice-ish.â
You donât take her hand. You just stare.
âI was sent to retrieve you,â she continues, already walking past you like she owns the alley. âBig mess. PR nightmare. Possibly global. Thought you might need help.â
âIâIâm fine,â you lie, inching toward the wall.
Yelena glances down at your coffee-covered shoes. âYouâre not fine.â
You exhale shakily. âHow is this real?â
She grins. âYou kissed The Sentry on your porch. Now youâre in a tabloid warzone. Welcome to superhero dating.â
You press your palms to your face.
Behind you, the voices are getting louder.
Yelena tilts her head toward the street. âWanna escape this circus?â
ââŠYes.â
âCome on.â She tosses you a hoodie from her bag â black, oversized. âPut this on. Youâre going to Thunderbolts HQ.â
âWhat?â
âBobâs waiting,â she adds casually, âand he looks very stressed. Itâs adorable.â
Your heart thumps harder.
You pull the hoodie over your head, the scent of leather and something faintly metallic catching in your nose. Yelena nods approvingly, then leads you toward a black SUV idling around the corner â quiet, sleek, and somehow completely unnoticed by the mob.
As you duck into the backseat, she climbs in beside you and shuts the door.
She tosses a protein bar in your lap.
âYouâre going to need energy,â she says. âTheyâre gonna love you.â
The SUV pulls away.
The shouting fades behind you.
And your life? Well. Itâs never going to be quiet again.
The SUV glides through a checkpoint, into an underground tunnel, then up a ramp. You think you see a guard tower disguised as a billboard. Or maybe youâre hallucinating. Thatâs possible too.
Yelenaâs sitting casually beside you, texting someone, while you clutch your protein bar like it might shield you from public scrutiny and government agencies.
Finally, the vehicle stops. The door swings open.
Yelena hops out and waves you after her. âDonât look nervous.â
âI am nervous.â
âThen pretend youâre not. Thatâs what we all do.â
You step out into a huge glass and steel atrium. Sleek floors. Tall ceilings. Giant screen with the Thunderbolts logo rotating in slow, dramatic fashion. Men in suits, agents in gear, someone zipping by on rollerblades like this is normal.
You? Youâre in someone elseâs hoodie, dried coffee on your pants, and your brainâs still processing âBob is the Sentry.â
Yelena leads you through a corridor like sheâs returning a library book. âTry not to look directly at Valentina unless you want to end up as the face of the teamâs diversity initiative.â
ââŠWhat?â
âJust smile and nod.â
Yelena leads you down a bright hallway, past glass walls and security doors, through what feels like the inside of a top-secret airport crossed with an IKEA showroom. Youâre still in someone elseâs hoodie, your coffeeâs long gone, and you havenât quite recovered from the kiss-seen-round-the-world.
She swings open a door, and inside itâs surprisingly normal â couches, a kitchen, the sound of a blender whirring. A few Thunderbolts glance up.
Ghost gives you a quiet nod from her seat at the counter.
John Walker grins, already sharpening a teasing remark.
Bob stands awkwardly by the sink, like he just got caught sneaking a cookie.
âWell, damn,â Walker says, leaning against the counter. âI thought Bob was making you up. Or buying girlfriend stock photos online.â
âJohn,â Bob says flatly.
âIâm just saying, weâre happy for you, man. Itâs cute. Weird, but cute.â
Ghost sips her tea. âHeâs been checking his phone like a teenage girl since Saturday.â
Bob looks like he wants to phase through the wall. You try not to laugh â and fail. A little.
Then the doors behind you slide open, and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine enters like the final boss in heels.
She smiles, perfectly calm. âGlad you made it. Cute outfit. Hope you like government buildings.â
You blink. âUh⊠thanks?â
Val flips open a sleek tablet and doesnât look up. âSo hereâs the deal. We canât exactly walk this story back without making it worse. Youâre already part of the narrative. The kiss happened. The porch photos are out. Bob looked⊠well, shockingly competent.â
Bob mumbles, âThanks?â
Val finally meets your eyes. âSo. Option one: go home, brave the cameras, and let Reddit guess your social security number. Or option two: we give you a place to stay. Quiet. Safe. With a door that locks and, if you ask nicely, a reading lamp.â
You glance at Bob. âWould I⊠be staying with him?â
Bob visibly stiffens.
Val shrugs. âYouâd have your own space. This isnât The Bachelor. Weâre not trying to force anything.â
Bob relaxes.
You think about it for a long moment. The tabloids. The porch. The look on his face when he saw you today.
ââŠOkay,â you say. âBut I want a real lock. And maybe snacks.â
âDone,â Val says, already walking away. âYelena, get her something from the vending machine. And no shrimp chips.â
Once the others drift off, you find yourself alone with Bob again â sort of. Youâre standing near the couches, and heâs holding a mug like itâs a prop he forgot how to use.
You glance at him. âSo.â
He looks up. âSo.â
âYou, uh⊠handled that well.â
âI was sweating the entire time.â
You smile. âDidnât show.â
Thereâs a pause. The good kind.
âIâm sorry you got pulled into this,â he says.
âIâm not,â you admit, then quickly add, âI meanânot the whole national-news part. That sucked. But, you know. The bookstore. The pie. That stuff.â
He looks at you like you just handed him a book he didnât know he needed.
He fidgets. âFor the record, I didnât just kiss you because your mom was watching," he says. You tilted your head.
Then, again, he softly says: âDo you think⊠once this blows over⊠maybe we could try the real thing?â
You consider it, heart full but calm.
ââŠWeâll see,â you say.
He grins.
So do you.
