Connecting the World: Telecommunications Satellites Enhance Global Communication Networks
Tumblr media
In an increasingly interconnected world, the role of telecommunications has never been more critical. The rapid growth of digital communication technologies has significantly transformed the way we live, work, and interact with one another. At the heart of this transformation lies a technology that orbits high above us – telecommunications satellites. These sophisticated machines play a pivotal role in bridging gaps across continents, bringing people closer, and enabling the seamless exchange of information on a global scale.
Telecommunications satellites are the backbone of modern communication networks. These satellites are designed to transmit signals across vast distances, overcoming the limitations of terrestrial infrastructure. By relaying signals from one point on the Earth's surface to another, they enable instant communication, regardless of geographical barriers. This capability has revolutionized various sectors, from media broadcasting to internet services, emergency communications, and more.
The Evolution of Telecommunications Satellites
The journey of telecommunications satellites began in the mid-20th century. Early experiments with satellite communication laid the groundwork for what would become a global network. The launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, in 1957 marked the dawn of the space age. However, it wasn't until the launch of the first geostationary satellite in 1965 that the true potential of satellite communication was realized. This satellite, positioned in a fixed location relative to the Earth's surface, could provide continuous coverage to a specific region, paving the way for real-time communication across the globe.
Since then, telecommunications satellites have evolved dramatically. Advances in technology have led to the development of more sophisticated satellites with greater capacity, reliability, and efficiency. Modern satellites are equipped with high-powered transponders, enabling them to handle large volumes of data transmission. These advancements have expanded the capabilities of satellite communication, making it an indispensable part of the global communication network.
How Telecommunications Satellites Work
The operation of telecommunications satellites is based on the principles of radio frequency transmission. These satellites receive signals from ground-based stations, amplify them, and retransmit them back to other ground stations. The process involves several key components:
Uplink: The transmission of signals from a ground station to the satellite. This is typically done using high-frequency radio waves.
Transponder: The component within the satellite that receives the uplink signal, amplifies it, and changes its frequency for retransmission.
Downlink: The transmission of signals from the satellite back to a ground station. This completes the communication loop, allowing the original signal to reach its intended destination.
Satellites are positioned in different orbits depending on their specific functions. Geostationary satellites, which orbit at approximately 35,786 kilometers above the equator, provide continuous coverage to specific regions. Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, positioned much closer to the Earth's surface, offer lower latency and are often used for services requiring real-time data transmission, such as internet connectivity.
Impact on Global Communication Networks
The impact of telecommunications satellites on global communication networks is profound. They have enabled a level of connectivity that was previously unimaginable, facilitating the seamless exchange of information across vast distances. Here are some key areas where their impact is most evident:
Media and Broadcasting
Telecommunications satellites have revolutionized the media and broadcasting industry. They enable the transmission of television and radio signals to remote and underserved areas, ensuring that people worldwide have access to information and entertainment. Live broadcasts of major events, such as sports competitions and political speeches, are made possible through satellite technology, allowing audiences to experience these moments in real time.
Internet Connectivity
In many parts of the world, terrestrial internet infrastructure is either insufficient or nonexistent. Telecommunications satellites provide a vital solution to this problem by offering internet connectivity to remote and rural areas. Satellite internet services have become increasingly popular, providing reliable and high-speed internet access to communities that were previously disconnected.
Emergency Communications
During natural disasters and emergencies, terrestrial communication networks are often disrupted. Telecommunications satellites play a crucial role in providing emergency communication services, ensuring that rescue and relief operations can be coordinated effectively. Satellite phones and portable satellite communication devices are essential tools for first responders and humanitarian organizations, enabling them to maintain communication in even the most challenging conditions.
Global Navigation Systems
Telecommunications satellites are also integral to global navigation systems. They provide the precise timing and positioning data required for navigation and location-based services. These systems are essential for various applications, including aviation, maritime, and land transportation, as well as for personal navigation devices used by millions of people worldwide.
Future Trends and Developments
The field of telecommunications satellites is continually evolving, driven by advancements in technology and increasing demand for connectivity. Several trends and developments are shaping the future of this industry:
High Throughput Satellites (HTS)
High throughput satellites represent a significant advancement in satellite technology. These satellites offer substantially increased data transmission capacity, enabling faster and more reliable communication services. HTS technology is particularly beneficial for providing broadband internet access to remote and underserved areas, helping to bridge the digital divide.
Constellations of LEO Satellites
One of the most exciting developments in satellite communication is the deployment of constellations of low Earth orbit satellites. These constellations consist of hundreds or even thousands of small satellites working together to provide global coverage. LEO constellations offer lower latency and higher data transfer rates compared to traditional geostationary satellites, making them ideal for applications such as internet of things (IoT) connectivity and real-time data services.
Advances in Satellite Manufacturing
Advances in satellite manufacturing are making it possible to produce smaller, more cost-effective satellites. These miniaturized satellites, often referred to as smallsats or cubesats, can be launched in large numbers, providing flexible and scalable communication solutions. The reduced cost of manufacturing and launching these satellites is driving innovation and enabling new players to enter the market.
Integration with Terrestrial Networks
The integration of satellite communication with terrestrial networks is another key trend. Hybrid networks that combine satellite and terrestrial technologies can offer seamless connectivity, ensuring that users have access to reliable communication services regardless of their location. This integration is particularly important for providing consistent internet coverage in areas with challenging terrain or sparse infrastructure.
Challenges and Considerations
While telecommunications satellites offer numerous benefits, there are also challenges and considerations to address. One of the primary challenges is the cost associated with launching and maintaining satellites. The development, launch, and operation of satellites require significant investment, which can be a barrier for some organizations.
Additionally, the increasing number of satellites in orbit raises concerns about space debris and collision risks. Ensuring the long-term sustainability of space activities requires careful management of satellite operations and the implementation of measures to mitigate the risk of space debris.
Conclusion
Telecommunications satellites have fundamentally transformed global communication networks, enabling instant connectivity and information exchange across vast distances. From media broadcasting and internet connectivity to emergency communications and global navigation, the impact of these satellites is far-reaching and profound.
As technology continues to advance, the future of telecommunications satellites looks promising. High throughput satellites, LEO constellations, and advancements in satellite manufacturing are set to further enhance the capabilities of satellite communication. By overcoming challenges and embracing innovation, telecommunications satellites will continue to play a crucial role in connecting the world, bridging gaps, and enabling a more connected and informed global community.
In a world where connectivity is essential, telecommunications satellites stand as a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of progress. They embody the spirit of exploration and innovation, bringing people closer together and fostering a sense of global unity. As we look to the future, the continued evolution of telecommunications satellites promises to unlock new possibilities and drive the next wave of communication advancements.

Scorpion
Introduced and built by the Terran Hegemony in 2570 before the technological renaissance that saw a more open view of quadruped 'Mechs, the Scorpion is an example of an idea that was ahead of its time. The Scorpion was the dreamchild of Dr. David Harrison. The 'Mech was originally intended as a stable weapons platform, but as the model came into service it was relegated to an infantry support role. The design itself was shunned by most MechWarriors due to the rough ride of the four-legged gait, but if the design is looked at through an objective standpoint the Scorpion is a very capable 'Mech for its intended role.
At some point there had been an attempt to create a LAM version of the Scorpion, an unworkable project that was abandoned and quite literally buried in a bunker on Hesperus II. The long-forgotten blueprints and prototype remains were found by chance in 3065. Although the Scorpion LAM project as such had been unsuccessful, it had succeeded in streamlining components and redesigning the leg suspension, and applying these modifications alleviated the famously bumpy ride on the -12S and all subsequent variants.
The quadruped Scorpion is built on a Brigadier 800F chassis and powered by a VOX 330 fusion engine, allowing it to move at a top speed of 97.2 km/h, which lets the 'Mech reach good firing positions quickly if pilots can endure the bumpy ride. Protection is provided by seven tons of 4/Star Slab standard armor, and heat is managed by 10 single heat sinks.
The Scorpion carries a very basic, though dangerous, weapons payload. Its primary weapon is an Anderson Armaments PPC which, when combined with the Scorpion's highly stable chassis, makes the 'Mech ideal for close support. For close range combat, the Scorpion carries a Marvel Six-Load SRM-6 which allows the Scorpion to capitalize on any breaches in the enemy's armor. The Scorpion has another, smaller swivel-mount looking tube beneath the cockpit, perhaps intended for a flamer, machine gun, or small laser, but this mount does not actually work and is purely cosmetic; speculation is that it was dropped after the frame was completed and removing it would have slowed down production.

Note
wait i saw your doll joints touhou list and im fascinated. i would love to hear your thematic explanations if you're willing to explain
i had to backlog to find this so my memory of it is clearly not great but i'll do my best because if nothing else the way i think now is still much the same as the way i thought then. anyway
original post here. explanation below cut
meiling & sakuya - servants of remilia scarlet. sakuya obviously has some inhuman elements to her but i feel like there's an appeal to making either or both of remilia's servants into doll-type beings. manipulation of fate, puppeteering, all that. alternately, either or both having mechanical prosthetics would just be cool (possibly in the sense of remilia taking some of their flesh upon entering her service, or otherwise)
chen & ran - they're shikigami. fairly obvious really
reisen - the lunar rabbits are probably designed to be a working population to support the lunarians; thus, it'd be interesting if the lunar rabbits were to some degree visibly mechanical, made more obvious by reisen staying on earth longer and her fake skin chipping away to reveal the joints beneath
kaguya - she's just kind of got doll vibes. you either get it or you don't
medicine & hina - they're both dolls. obvious
okuu - for her cannon arm and her legs, you could easily justify mechanical joints given that they're acting out the roles of mechnical devices. bonus points if they have detachable components so that she can swap between her power armour and regular limbs (and more besides)
kogasa, benben, yatsuhashi, raiko - they're tsukumogami, so i think it'd be fun if they looked a bit like puppets (that is, puppets that the spirits of their true bodies are manipulating)
futo & miko - this is more personal flavour but given how shikaisen work i think it'd be interesting if they looked slightly inhuman, and that's best reflected by having them be made of the material they used for their bodies (their plates and sword, respectively). and obviously if you're doing that then having joints is essential
okina - in addition to the obvious element of prosthetics adding onto the idea of her as a god of disabilities i also just think it'd fuck severely if she looked artificial. i already have the idea that she has different masks to represent different aspects of herself so adding that onto an obviously inhuman form would just be extremely cool. just imo
mayumi & keiki - mayumi is already an inhuman construct so that's pretty obvious. keiki's is a bit less intuitive but basically derives from the idea that she's as much a machine as mayumi is, she's simply the machine that makes all the other machines. a much more mechanical god than is usual in touhou; i think it'd be cool if she looked similar to her creations. made in their god's own image, even
enoko - really this just comes down to the idea of more of her body having the aesthetics of her claw-hands. and vibes
makai residents - artificial beings made by shinki. obvious

//[ASSIST: CONDENSE]> RESPONSE BELOW READMORE
--READMORE BYPASSED--
Thermie’s time with the Attica City Jäger Guard is brief yet enlightening.
Every ounce of energy is different from the Academy. Sure, there are mechs and Pilots being ferried about the hangars, but walking-paces time differently. Officials treat their pilots with something akin to respect (with stretched-definition). The air feels both lighter and heavier in various ways- social-tension, gravity-presence, the absent hum of atmosphere recycle-systems.
After the defeat of MTK-VOKOLOSS (“MECHANIZED-TYPE KAIJU,” an unofficial designation xey find appealing), xey spend the rest of xeir stay almost exclusively docked within the Guard’s hangars. None of the subalterns xey try on for size feel right- either with the wrong number of limbs, or improperly-structured legs, or a balance issue, or (in a particular case) a dent on the upper torso that sends xeir weight-adjust calculations all screwy.
Thermie doesn’t mention to the Guardsmen’s team that xey have a mech-bay waiting back “home” at the Academy. Oracle would thank xem for the free repairs and congratulate xem for not looking a gift in the mouth… according to baseless predictions. Somewhere in that simulation, a single clip of honor tries to bloom before being decapitated.
Passive curiosity fares better in its soil-emergence. It starts as a seed: [Hurricane-Hunter]’s bright red Kidd in the furthest hangar bay, swarming with drones like an agitated hornet’s nest. Then, a sprout breaks the dirt: a drone wanders far from the frame, and is recalled back with a buzz of static that only xey and the drone seem to hear.
Thermie mimics a tongue-click to get the attention of a mechanic on xeir shoulder. The small, spindly human looks up from its snooping, quickly wiping its hand on its pant-leg when it comes away blood-slick from the side of xeir Smartgun.
//[QUERY: OPERATION]> How do commander-type frames similar to [Hurricane-Hunter] communicate with their drone swarms? I have noticed anomalous signals between its components, but they are unfamiliar to me.
The human cocks its head and makes a puzzled noise, as if it doesn’t understand Thermie’s question at first. It takes a second to think- process interruption blowback?- before finding the words.
“Not sure how that Kidd does it, but I know a lot of ‘em use Legionspace. Why?”
//[ELABORATE: DEFINITION]> “Legionspace”
“Uh-“ it lags again- “dedicated e-warfare system. Second reality that only tuned machines can play with. Also works for esoteric hacking shit.”
//Your explanation is appreciated. You may resume your own inquiries.
After a moment, the mechanic shrugs and goes back to poking at the flesh at the base of the Smartgun. Thermie rolls xeir optic case.
//Inconsequential.
[Hurricane-Hunter] fires another command to a wayward drone. The sound of it- is it even a sound?- seals the deal in Thermie’s mind; Soul-searching time. Xey disconnect xeir visual feed and turn xeir words inwards, diving through programs xey’ve never had the courage to boot.
//[DIRECTORY: NAVIGATE]> “ELECTRONIC WARFARE SYSTEMS” //[CALIBRATION: WARNING]> This module has not been serviced in [ERROR: NULL VALUE] cycles. Initialize? Y/N //[QUERY: INITIALIZE]> Y //[INITIALIZATION: MODULE]> Electronic warfare systems online. Redirecting system cognition to relevant processes. //[BRIDGE: CONJURE]> Synthetic nootropic module activated. Overclock procedure activated. Core temperatures rising.
Shit, xey didn’t think about that last part. A swelling heat registers in xeir upper left shoulder and drives xem to panic slightly. Xey set xeir voice to project externally again and shout to the mechanic a warning-
//[TEMPERATURE: WARNING]> Thermoregulation hardware compromised by unknown paracausal agent. Please dismount this frame. I cannot verify your safety if you remain in your current location.
The mechanic yelps in surprise as the plasteel armor plate under its ass sharply warms. It gets the message painfully clear, and loops a length of cable around the Smartgun’s barrel to rappel down to the hangar floor.
//Sincere apologies given. I will alert your team when my frame is sufficiently cooled and safe to work on.
The mechanic fires a two-fingered salute and awkwardly hobbles away, leaving Thermie alone in the maintenance bay. Xey stifle a quiet chuckle- since when do xey laugh?- before returning to the code terminal in xeir mind.
//[BRIDGE: TRAVERSE]> Initializing Legionspace simulation. Please wait…

TO BE CONTINUED.

Vehicle Manufacturers
Despite there being hundreds if not thousands of vehicle manufacturers, three companies have rose to the top of the Free Market. These are Vermillion Motors, Gogo Incorporated, and Shogun Machines. Despite these three giants of companies dominating the market, they do not stomp out their competition, instead offering to bring them into the fold, these corporations being conglomerates of thousands of others that share a similar design ethos.
Vermillion Motors
Vermillion Motors was founded in 2101, and has withstood the test of time due to the focus on providing a suite of vehicles, tailor-made for the middle class consumer, they have the largest repertoire of vehicle platforms of the big three Vehicle Corporations, having everything from SUVs and Vans to two-seater comfort rides. All at an affordable price, they dominate the market due to building genuine workhorses of vehicles, along with their warranty-period being the longest out of the big three. When possible, Vermillion Motors uses a 'standard' component, which allows Mechanics to service their entire suite of vehicles with only one or two sets of tools.
Gogo Incorporated
Calling all Speed Demons and Thrillseekers, Gogo Incorporated's Mission Statement is "Speed, Speed, and More Speed". They're the frontrunners in performance and horsepower, though the Miles Per Gallon on almost all of their vehicles is the worst in their relative "Class". Hydrogen Gas Stations chitter in glee when they see a Gogo Incorporated Vehicle pull up to their pumps. To account for the fuel-guzzling nature of their motors, the fuel tanks they sport are much larger, resulting in some…combustive results when mixed with their ideal clientele. Despite filling a very specific niche of vehicle manufacturer, they hold a large market share due to Taxi Drivers and racers, among hobbyists and people who just like to see that big number go up.
Shogun Machines
Whether you're a highroller, pimped and preened businessman, or a Limo-Service. Shogun is their name, and Luxury is their game. Shogun advertises to the highest of high class, the 1% of the 1%. They know their Clients can pay their mortgage-sized price tags. Offering bullet-resistant armor plating and glass, among other security features, along with built-in mini-bars and a full fridge. Shogun Machines often find their cars being rented, but even that costs an arm and a leg. Despite this, they have become a household name, a shared dream of those on the lower rungs of the economical ladder.

Day 75
Meridian
Tumblr media
After my very late arrival to Meridian in the morning, I slept until noon. I'll need the rest. Out to trade fabrics and parts for my armour, then I set to work. The local weapons merchant was more than willing to lend me his space and tools.
Tumblr media
I sewed the shield components into the fabric of my old Nora skirt, the one Teb gave to me, and reinforced an undershirt with ribs of machine tubing and plating along the back, tough leather at the front, to which I affixed the ancient armour. The sleeves are full-length, separate leather pieces, lined with fur and stacked with more shield generators. Threaded a ribbon through the headpiece to finish the set. Hooked it all up to a miniature force loader of my own design, synced the system into my Focus, and there it was. A sturdy shield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in Olin's apartment, thinking. A dangerous thing with what might be my final battle just over the horizon. I thought of Rost, mostly. If he'd survived, maybe he would have joined me here, on this battlefield. What's a second exile for a soulless man? I haven't accepted defeat, far from it. I know exactly what Rost would say to that.
I applied his paint. All those years, all those symbols he tried to teach me, which I always ignored, and he never explained the one writ on his own face. Death-Seeker. The Nora believe the machines of the ancients were faithless, soulless things, after all, and that's where I came from. My soul has always belonged to the mountain.
This is my only mission—not just this battle, but all those to come as I forge ahead and repair Gaia, chasing her scattered, conscious subordinates. Chasing who or whatever made them so in the first place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was starting to get too deep in my head about it. Stopped by the lodge for a meal, and to show off my armour. Obviously. Then I rode the elevator down to the ridge to see who else had arrived over the past day.
Tumblr media
The first I met, impossible to pass by on account of his enthusiastic greeting, was Teb. So he came after all. A little behind the rest, due to his injuries, but here nonetheless. Not fighting on the front, thankfully, but helping stock supply caches around the village and the path to the Alight. I'm glad he's here, despite my telling him to stay away. He was the first person besides Rost to show me any kindness that I can remember.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next new arrival I met, to my surprise, was Elida. I was glad to see her doing so much better, and she'll likely be safer here than in Brightmarket. Both she and her father made the journey; she was stocking supplies along with Teb, and gave me something of my own. Just in case.
Tumblr media
Vanasha and Uthid were making preparations too. I'm glad Uthid decided to join her in Meridian after all. The pair seem to be getting along well; Vanasha a woman of many words and teasing jokes, and Uthid enduring them in gruff silence, not without fondness.
Uthid thanked me again for stopping him throwing his life into the hands of a few greedy mercenaries. He didn't even come here just to seek a glorious death in battle. Not that he wouldn't cherish one if it came his way, I'd wager.
Vanasha actually bared her heart to me, a little. All those years as a spy, it must be novel being allowed to tell the truth she's kept inside. She endured Jiran's reign, the whips of his soldiers, cruelty of its priests and poverty of his people. Then she went west with them, all in service of stopping his legacy once and for all. The cult now marching on the city are the final remnants of the mad king's legacy. She's been waiting for this day for a very long time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Petra was there too, but I knew she wouldn't miss this fight for anything. Her cannons—which inspired my own Behemoth force loader modifications—would now defend Meridian instead of breaking down its walls. I gave them another test run on a couple of training dummies across the river. She's had them mass-produced; four of them on the ridge and more up on the city walls, along with huge bowls full of bombs for ammunition.
Tumblr media
Next I met Nakoa. Still scarred and sun-burnt, but looking much stronger and happier. She found the Nora's new title for me pretty amusing, but expressed her joy that the Matriachs have now opened the border to outcasts. She can return home to her brother and aunt once the battle is over. This fight against the Eclipse was personal to her too. The only raider feared more than Zaid in the Sacred Lands was Helis himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next I spoke to Janeva, here along with his guards and the former prisoners of Sunstone rock, pardoned by Avad in exchange for their service. The king really is wasting no potential ally. Once this is over, there'll be no one left for Janeva to guard. Unless he decides to take prisoners, that is. Maybe his preferred, archaic manner of punishment would be the way to go for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By the riverbank, standing apart from the rest—or perhaps just hoping to avoid his former warden—was Nil. I worried for him after I made my departure at our intended arena, but he seemed to be doing as well as ever. Which is to say, not especially. He expressed his usual excitement at the chance to kill without recourse. Whatever happened to staying apolitical? Uncomfortable as his relish makes me, he's a formidable warrior. I'm glad he's here. If he survives the battle, which he's likely hoping he won't, I wonder what accepted enemy he'll turn his blade to next.
Tumblr media
Further on, at the foot of the Alight, I met Inatut. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, given he'd proclaimed his intentions to strike out as a Werak of one, but here he was, in the city of the man who challenged the honour of his tribe. The challenge Inatut almost died for. He was still wearing the clothes from a Carja corpse, but seemed more comfortable in them now. Better suited for the climate too. All his life he'd been a fighter, a bringer of brute force. What better way to test himself than in a great battle against a demon just like the one that plagued the Cut?
Tumblr media
Closeby was Aratak, here for similar reasons. He'd brought half his Werak with him, all willing to join their former Cheiftain to repay her victory against the Daemon. I know it can't have been easy for them to make the journey—not just because of its length, but because they still bear the scars earned protecting their lands from the Carja. Aratak told me more of Cyan as well, that slowly, he was introducing hunters and Shamans of many Weraks to her and her knowledge. He's come a long way. I know Ourea would be proud of him, though she already held so much pride for her brother.
I made sure to let him know I beat his time at the Hunting Grounds too. He was already well aware.
Tumblr media
Aluki was nearby as well, the overeager huntress I met at the Banuk encampment. She believed that I was responsible for restoring the machines' aggression in the grove, and though I tried to explain what had really happened, she thanked me for the service. She's about as Banuk as they come, living only to fight and fight another day. She came for the tall rumours of the Shadow Carja's death machines, as I'd hoped she would. I'm sure she won't be disappointed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I headed back to the village, eating at the tavern. The village will be cleared out by nightfall, as it has been these past few days in expectation of the attack. Even if we can defend the city and the Spire, I doubt the village and surrounding farmlands will weather the force. And it's such a beautiful place.
Tumblr media
Riding the elevator back up to the mesa, I stopped by the palace to check in with Avad and Marad one more time, rain starting up in a light fall as I walked over. Erend was there, looking out over the city. Nervous, I could tell, but he put on a smile and a jovial laugh when he spoke to me. Pressure's getting to him—the Vanguard, the soldiers, the city...Well, try the world.
Tumblr media
Avad said preparations were all but complete. Marad's scouts in the west had spotted signs of activity and passed word back from the previous night. Ranks forming, carts of blaze being dragged out of the ravine in the Jewel. They estimated an attack very soon, maybe even as early as tonight. Lucky I returned when I did.
It must be difficult for Avad, here in the palace—and I don't mean any sarcasm in that. He may be safe and in luxury, but to watch the battle raging from his vantage, unable to intervene...He'll just have to trust that all his preparations have been enough. I know he's done all he can to defend the Spire, despite his earlier misgivings. I'm grateful. Of course, the whole world should be too, they just don't know it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in the city square, by the defaced statue of Avad's father, damn cause of this whole mess, the soldiers and Vanguardsmen sat together, eager for my attention, for further news. They'd been instructed by Marad not to let news spread that the attack could occur this very night, but spread it had regardless. It was a tall order; they have families here. The city was swept up in panic, even more feverish than it had been these last few days. People carting their goods back to their homes, calling out for friends and family, whispering their private fears. We have to make sure the fighting doesn't make it this far.
Tumblr media
By the memorial in the old Sun Ring, the priests led a hymn to the setting sun, just as beautiful and mournful as the first time I heard it, that first evening overwhelmed in Meridian as the stars came out. When I arrived in this place, its scale felt impassable, something I could barely wrap my head around—and a couple of weeks earlier Mother's Heart had instilled the same feeling of scale and relative smallness. Then I saw the world, that map of landmasses so large neither place was even an impression on its surface. And there are other worlds, or at least other planets. A long time ago, the Odyssey tried to make it to one. All of it, impossibly large, so nearly dead for good. Nearly so again, unless we win.
But what I kept thinking as I listened to the priests, looked around at the altars dressed with the affects of each tribe, with their own strange symbols and stories, was Apollo. If humanity had been given its knowledge as intended, would this mesa still stand empty, just a rock in the desert? What stands on it now, and in so many other niches carved into the new lands, could never be worth the suffering brought on by utter ignorance, but still, there is value in it. There's something here that wouldn't have been otherwise. All tribal myth ever did was hurt me; I thought that was all it was capable of, but what I felt inside the ring was like that brief warmth brought on by the Blessing in Mother's Heart. A part of something, more than I ever could have guessed. What I am is embedded deep into the metal bones of this world.
Tumblr media
I wandered off to the temple overlooking the Spire. I watched the city's forces milling around up there, making ready. My forces.
Tumblr media
Back in Olin's apartment just after dark. Exhausted, but restless too. It wasn't just nerves—I hadn't killed a machine all day. That's a first in a very long while, especially if you don't count the days I was unconscious in All-Mother mountain. I'm sure I'll more than make up for it once the Eclipse make their move.
Tumblr media
I stripped off my armour and once again settled down to sleep in the bed of a man I killed. I kept thinking of Elisabet. More of her journals had been restored, and through them I learnt more about her life at Zero Dawn and Gaia Prime. The constant stress, the overwhelming guilt at the fate she'd consigned all of humanity to—a suicidal battle against an unbeatable enemy. My odds feel almost as slim, and here I've roped in all my allies with me. I would do it alone if I thought I could win.
Elisabet wrote of the Lightkeeper protocol, how 'creepy' it would have been to raise and train a clone of herself. I guess she'd be freaked out by the fact that I exist. I wish she could see me.
I spoke to Sylens through my Focus in a last ditch effort to gain even the coldest of comforts. No response. I wonder if he's still listening. Surely he'll be watching the battle from afar—he knows how crucial my victory will be. Is he closeby, ready to take my place if I fall? Somehow I think not. He has more in mind for himself than saving the planet.
No, I'll face the night alone. Could be I wake up to another peaceful morning—as peaceful as preparations for war can be. Could be I'm dead by sunrise. Less chance of that if I get some rest.

Achieving a goal is the beginning of a new challenge. To run really fast, HKS thinks.
A drag race scene where people compete for 0.001 seconds over a distance of about 400 meters in just a few seconds. '91 is a drag field that demands quick response and power from the engine, clutch, suspension, and even a single drop of oil or gasoline, as well as durability and transmission ability to handle instantaneous high power. -In '95-'96, the ``HKS R32 DRAG GT-R'' won the series championship in the RRC Drag Race Championship for three consecutive years. The following year, in 1997, the ``HKS DRAG 180SX'' in the BERC Drag Race Championship Pro Stock class and the ``HKS R33 DRAG GT-R'' in the Pro GT-R class achieved the Avec Championship. Having achieved one goal in 1997, what we aimed for in 1998 is:
Quarter mile time in 9 seconds with FF base vehicle. They then talked about their know-how from drag racing to date, and ``HKS FF DRAG CELICA'' made its debut. The first goal was achieved on October 9, 1998 at Sendai Highlands with a time of 9.886 seconds. He further improved his time to 9.727 seconds, and in 1999 he set a goal of breaking the quarter mile in the 6-second range, and has already begun a new challenge. "Achieving a goal is the beginning of a new challenge" - HKS' never-ending battle continues

Name: Moth
Model: MTH-9L
Manufacturer: Ceres Metals Industries
Intro Year: 3145
Class: Light Battlemech
Cost: 4.677 mn c-bills
Weight: 30 T
Top Speed: 97.2 kph
Jump Capacity: 240 meters
Quirks: difficult to maintain, no/minimal arms, nimble jumper
In the wake of the 6th Andurian War, the Strategios of the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces determined that there was a need for a new, low cost light mech to serve as a forward observer and harassment unit in their augmented companies. While the venerable Raven remained in service, its relatively low speed and expensive suite of electronics lead to a number of costly losses during the conquest of Wallacia. To that end, specifications for a new scout were sent out for bids- the new mech had to be cheap, difficult for Free Worlds League precision energy weapons to engage with, and capable of engaging and providing support for indirect fire elements of the CCAF at a variety of ranges. Unusually, despite Hellespont Industrials, the Confederation's more seasoned light manufacturer, submitting a bid in the form of the Sunfire, Ceres Metals Industries won the contract. Their design, initially named Project GOSSAMER, was delayed several times due to production shortfalls and the discovery of a Federated Suns spy ring operating at Ceres' design bureau. Eventually the mech began full production in 3145 as the Moth.
An outwardly radical design, Ceres managed to reduce the cost of their bid significantly through the use of a number of off the shelf parts and existing research prototypes. The mech's engine was a GM 180 extralight fusion power plant, originally designed for a prototype Vindicator before the VND-4L project opted for a larger 225 power plant instead, allowing the 30 ton mech to achieve ground speeds of up to 97 kph. While this speed was deemed unacceptable for the task at hand, the mech's principle designer, Dr. Oxana Ufimtsev, opted to equip the mech with a battery of Anderson jump jets and used a novel delta design for the main hull of the mech, with very low profile arms and wide, integrated control surfaces to give the mech an unusually high glide coefficient. Together, these systems allow the Moth to leap distances similar to those achievable by the Spider, despite the mech's far less powerful engine. The cost of this innovative design is a frame with extremely cumbersome access points and systems not immediately intuitive to most mechtechs, leading to increased maintenance costs and repair times. When deployed in augmented formations alongside aerospace assets, technicians are commonly cross trained on both the unit's fighters and Moths, as the two repair schedules have been found to be similar.
The production model MTH-9L Moth uses a Moscovia light PPC as its main armament, supported by a pair of Ceres Arms model JX small pulse lasers mounted in the two weapons nacels that comprise the design's arms. Additionally, the mech carries a Diverse Optics ER small laser in the left arm and an Apple Churchill TAG system in the left, imported from Hellespont's Sian facility. Clad in 6 tons of Ceres mk III Stealth Armor, the Moth is easily capable of withstanding light fire from enemy mechs while confounding longer range sensor returns. Unfortunately, to make room for the light PPC, Ceres opted to reduce the size and ammenities of the mech's cockpit, resulting in complaints from pilots assigned to the machine for long scouting patrols.
In combat, Moths are most typically used as long range harassment units, using their stealth armor and long jump range to maintain evade enemy fire as they opportunistically engage with their TAG and light PPC. As the fight progresses, some pilots may choose to engage in more active combat, allowing the indirect elements they're supporting to remove the majority of a target'a armor before attempting to destroy vulnerable exposed components with their small lasers
The first recorded combat involving a Moth occurred on Brisbane between elements of the First Victoria Rangers and a raiding force of the Concordat Commandos. Captain Curtis Bao deployed a lance of Moths to waylay the advance of a Taurian armored colum and allow for his own heavy units and combat vehicles to position themselves in foothills east of the TDF landing site. The light mechs caught the tank company and their mech escorts by surprise, outflanking the vehicles and engaging into their weaker side armor at long range with their PPCs while painting targets for Bao's LRM carriers and Thunderbolts. Eventually, the Commandos' mechs rallied and began to engage the stealthy light lance, forcing them to withdraw, however the action blunted the Taurian advance and allowed time for the Victoria Rangers to mount a successful defense of Brisbane's capital, Badwater. The surviving Moths then saw use as city fighters, their jumping capabilities allowing them to manuever easily though the urban fabric of Badwater while their X-pulse lasers let them to brutally engage Taurian infantry.
As a new design, very few variants or operators outside the Confederation have yet to be spotted. Beyond the CCAF, a few Capellan aligned mercenary commands have been allowed to officially purchase small numbers of the design, while the allied Magistracy of Canopus has managed to acquire a number of lances of the mech through unknown sources.
While their infiltration was discovered and rooted out before the full design was finalized, MIIO operatives did manage to steal plans for the early prototypes of the Moth, which the New Avalon Institute of Science used as a test bed for re-engineered laser designs and new SRM munitions. A small production run of the design, similar but without the Capellan stealth armor, was produced by Corean Enterprises at their Augusta plant, but the AFFS appears to have abandoned adding the mech to its TO&E.
Finally, several examples of the Moth were captured by forces loyal to Alaric Ward's Star League during fighting on New Earth. The Jade Falcon remnant present immediately saw use in the design as a heavier alternative to their light Ion Sparrows. A Clantech refit of the mech has been spotted using an ER large laser in place of the PPC and a quartet of small pulse lasers in the weapons nacels.

In the Workshop
Tumblr media
The workshop hummed with the controlled chaos of precision engineering and the subtle undercurrent of anticipation. H2U8M stepped into the sterile environment, his bare form exposed save for the utilitarian embrace of his chastity device. Technicians, clad in their distinctive uniforms, already armed with measurements and calculations, stood ready to craft his paramedic exoskeleton.
The process began with the pants, a snug integration with his chastity device, ensuring a seamless connection between the two. The technicians worked with a blend of expertise and efficiency, their hands moving with practiced precision. Each piece, each component, was designed to fit him perfectly, melding technology with the contours of his body.
Boots followed, encasing his feet in a protective embrace. The metallic echoes of the fastening mechanisms resonated through the workshop, a chorus of clicks signaling the establishment of a symbiotic relationship between man and machine. The chest protector came next, a solid shield against the uncertainties of the field. It settled across his torso, merging with the existing chassis of his paramedic uniform.
The arms, the final pieces of the puzzle, were delicately secured, their seals locking into place with an audible click. H2U8M, now enveloped in his Mark IV Armour Suit, felt the weight of responsibility and the tangible connection between flesh and alloy. The technicians, ever attentive, inquired about his first impressions.
"Excited," he confessed, the word lingering in the air like a whispered oath. The suit felt good, an extension of his own determination and a promise of protection in the face of chaos. The melding of man and machine was a dance of collaboration, a diabolical ballet choreographed for the greater good – or so the narrative went.
H2U8M stood there, encased in the Mark IV Armour Suit, a fusion of human and machine. The technicians' inquiries about his initial feelings met with a nod of approval. "Feels good," he remarked, the words carrying a simplicity that belied the complex relationship developing between him and the suit.
The sensation was more than just physical comfort; it was a psychological affirmation. The snugness of the suit, the subtle weight of its presence, all whispered promises of protection and capability. In those moments, H2U8M wasn't merely wearing a uniform; he was embodying a symbol of service and commitment.
As he moved, testing the suit's responsiveness, a quiet satisfaction played on his features. It wasn't just about the mechanics, the clicks, or the technological marvel that enveloped him. It was about the alignment of purpose – a harmony of man and engineered armor, poised to face the challenges that lay ahead.
In the sterile confines of the workshop, H2U8M found an unexpected sense of empowerment. The Mark IV Armour Suit, with its intricate design and tailored fit, became an extension of his identity, a tool to navigate the complexities of his paramedic duties. And in that fusion of man and machinery, there was a subtle acknowledgment that this suit wasn't just an instrument; it was a partner in the paramedic journey.
The workshop, with its symphony of clicks and controlled chaos, had witnessed the birth of a new iteration in the legacy of paramedics. H2U8M, now suited up and standing tall, represented the convergence of human resilience and technological prowess.
The technician, a grizzled veteran of tactical paramedic operations, circled H2U8M with an air of authority. His eyes, weathered by years of service, bore into the recruit, scrutinizing both his reactions and the integration of the Mark IV Armour Suit.
"Welcome to the future, lad," he rasped, a faint Scottish accent coloring his words. "This ain't just a suit. It's your shield, your lifeline in the thick of it."
Tumblr media
His fingers danced over the surface of H2U8M's chest protector, tracing the lines that concealed the crucial integration with the chastity device. "This here is your ticket to focus. The link between man and machine – a dance of technology and discipline."
As the technician delved into the suit's features, his gaze flickered toward the corner of the workshop, where an older suit stood in stoic silence. "That one," he gestured, "served me well in the grittiest of situations. But yours, lad, yours is an evolution. Enhanced, refined, and ready to elevate you to the peak of paramedic prowess."
He spoke of the chastity cage with a peculiar mix of reverence and matter-of-factness. "Aye, it's not just a symbolic shackle. It's your tether to control. Keeps you sharp, focused. And when the mission's done, you'll appreciate the sweet release it offers."
The technician's eyes took on a distant glint, a momentary reverie as he spoke of his own experiences with the chastity cage. His voice carried the weight of years spent in the crucible of service, and he recounted with a peculiar mix of reverence and matter-of-factness.
"Aye, the cage," he murmured, his gaze fixed on the older suit in the corner, as if conjuring memories from its silent presence. "It's more than just a device, lad. It's a commitment. A pact with yourself and the Corps. Keeps the distractions at bay, sharpens the mind when you need it most."
He ran weathered fingers along the edges of H2U8M's integrated chastity device, the tactile sensation grounding his words. "When you wear it day in and day out, you come to appreciate its discipline. It's a constant reminder of why you're here, of the duty you bear. And when the chaos of the field tries to pull you apart, that cage keeps you whole, focused."
There was a pause, a beat of silence that spoke volumes. The workshop seemed to hold its breath, absorbing the echoes of years etched into the technician's consciousness. He continued, his voice low but steady, "There's a strange camaraderie in knowing every paramedic out there wears one. Different designs, same purpose. Unity in discipline."
With a nod toward the older suit, he concluded, "I wore one like it in my time. The technology's advanced, the designs have evolved, but the essence remains. It's a badge of service, a mark of dedication. And, lad, you wear it not just for yourself but for those you're sworn to protect. It's a responsibility, a silent pact with the Corps and the lives you touch."
The technician's fingers traced a path along the recruit's freshly shaven scalp, a ritualistic gesture that spoke of both inspection and familiarity. His touch, gentle yet purposeful, lingered momentarily as if gauging the recruit's mental fortitude. The shaved head, a symbol of uniformity and discipline, bore the telltale signs of recent conditioning.
With a press of a button, the technician brought up the display, a cascade of physiological data dancing across the screen. The recruit's responses, like a symphony of indicators, showed the proper harmonies – a testament to the efficacy of the conditioning process.
"Steady as she goes," the technician murmured, his voice carrying a blend of approval and professional detachment. The display told a story of neural pathways shaped, of emotional responses sculpted, all in the crucible of conditioning. It was a dance between man and machine, mind and technology converging in the pursuit of a singular purpose – to forge paramedics capable of facing the rigors of their calling.
Tumblr media
he diagnostic process unfolded with a series of calibrated gestures, the technician's fingers dancing across the control panel embedded in the Mark IV Armour Suit. The crimson exoskeleton hummed with latent power, ready to envelop the recruit in a seamless fusion of man and machine.
"Let's run a quick diagnostic, shall we?" The technician's voice, calm and assured, cut through the ambient hum of the workshop. The recruit, H2U8M, stood with a blend of anticipation and readiness, a silent participant in the technological symphony about to commence.
As the diagnostic algorithms engaged, streams of data cascaded across the technician's display. It was a ballet of information, each line and curve a testament to the suit's readiness and the recruit's symbiosis with the technological marvel. Status indicators blinked in rhythmic unison, a digital heartbeat signaling the vitality of the Mark IV Armour Suit.
"Integration looks smooth, just as expected," the technician commented, his eyes flicking between the display and the recruit. The suit, now an extension of the recruit's form, responded to the diagnostic stimuli with a grace that bespoke the meticulous craftsmanship underlying its design.
The integration process, a marriage of neural interfaces and biomechanical precision, reached its crescendo. The technician, a seasoned custodian of this symbiotic dance, nodded in satisfaction. "Your suit is calibrated and ready, H2U8M. How does it feel?"
The recruit, now enveloped in the embrace of the Mark IV Armour Suit, considered the question. The tactile sensation, the subtle vibrations of the suit's servos, and the HUD that blinked to life – all coalesced into an experience that transcended the mundane. "It feels... powerful," H2U8M responded, his voice carrying a note of awe. "Like I'm part of something much larger."
Tumblr media
The technician offered a knowing smile. "That, my friend, is the essence of the Mark IV. Now, let's ensure everything aligns perfectly." As the final checks concluded, the recruit stood adorned in the crimson exoskeleton, a testament to the seamless integration of man and technology, poised for the challenges that awaited beyond the workshop's doors.
"You are ready. I'll hand you back to the Instructors. And when I guess right the Instructors won't let you out of the suit for the next 10 dayy" the techniician laugehd.
H2U8M's eyes widened slightly at the technician's cryptic jest. The laughter, echoing within the confines of the workshop, carried a peculiar blend of camaraderie and a hint of something more sinister. The recruit, now fully enrobed in the Mark IV Armour Suit, felt the weight of its power and the unspoken implications that hung in the air.
The technician's gaze, a mix of experience and a touch of malevolence, lingered for a moment longer. "Remember, this suit is your shield and your prison," he uttered, the words hanging in the air like an ominous refrain. It was a sentiment that transcended the workshop, reaching into the depths of the paramedic corps' ethos.
With a final nod, H2U8M was escorted back to the custody of the instructors.

Donald Trump helped create the US government’s cybersecurity agency during his first term as president. Six years later, employees of that agency are afraid of what he’ll do with it once he retakes office.
Trump’s alliances with libertarian-minded billionaires like Elon Musk and his promises to cut government spending and corporate oversight have alarmed staffers at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the component of the Department of Homeland Security that defends US government computer systems from hackers and helps state and local governments, private companies, and nonprofit groups protect themselves.
CISA, which the Trump administration and Congress created in 2018 by reorganizing an existing DHS wing, became a target of right-wing vitriol after its Trump-appointed director rebuffed the president’s election conspiracy theories in 2020 (prompting Trump to fire him) and after it worked with tech companies to combat online misinformation during the 2022 election.
The incidents turned a once-obscure agency with bipartisan credibility into a conservative bogeyman. House Republicans have accused CISA of spying on and censoring Americans, and the GOP senator who will soon oversee the agency wants to eliminate it.
Now, with Trump returning to office vowing to purge disloyal civil servants and turn DHS into an immigration-crackdown machine, CISA employees are acutely worried about the fate of their still-fledgling agency, according to interviews with four current staffers and another US cyber official, all of whom requested anonymity to speak candidly about a sensitive subject.
“We believe it's our responsibility to help those who don't really have the ability to help themselves,” says one CISA employee. “We take our missions seriously, which is why we are all concerned, to a T, about if any decisions are going to affect our mission negatively.”
Scaling Back Corporate Accountability
CISA is bracing for change in several areas that were key to US president Joe Biden’s cybersecurity agenda.
Biden’s cyber strategy called for companies to take more responsibility for the security of their products and services, and CISA led that effort with its campaign encouraging companies to make their systems “secure by design” and “secure by default.” Agency officials pushed tech firms to make security features free and automatic and to pay closer attention to the quality of their code. Hundreds of companies have signed CISA’s secure-by-design pledge and vowed to take cybersecurity more seriously.
CISA employees and Biden administration officials expect the Trump team to kill Biden’s corporate responsibility initiatives. “They do not think it's the role of the US government to make [the] private sector act in a certain way,” says a US cyber official.
A second CISA employee predicts that “compliance efforts like secure-by-design may not have the support that they currently benefit from.”
That retreat from corporate oversight will be a top priority of Musk and other tech billionaires who have flocked to Trump. “The tech influence here, assuming Elon Musk stays in Trump's good graces, is going to be significant,” the cyber official says.
Without high-level White House backing, CISA’s secure-by-design campaign “becomes toothless,” says the first CISA employee. “Some companies will be less inclined to follow these [guidelines] if they don't believe that the executive branch is going to support them.”
CISA employees are also watching uneasily to see if Trump officials pressure the cyber agency to water down its draft regulation requiring critical infrastructure operators to report cyber incidents. Congress mandated the rule in a 2022 spending bill, but groups representing infrastructure operators have complained that the draft requirements—which must be finalized by late 2025—are too onerous. Trump could force CISA to scale back the rules in order to appease the private sector.
Trump and his allies want to “get rid of anybody who can enforce the rules, because then the rules don't matter,” the cyber official says. “In CISA’s instance, that's going to be pretty significant.”
CISA is also bracing for changes to its election security mission. The agency has already dramatically scaled back conversations with social media companies about online misinformation following a right-wing backlash, but Trump’s team could force CISA to abandon even more of its election security work. CISA staffers worry that Trump will block the agency from participating in state and local election officials’ “Trusted Info” initiative, which encourages Americans to listen to their local election supervisors instead of provocative online claims.
“I think that work is probably dead,” says a third CISA employee.
South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, embraced election conspiracies after Biden’s win in 2020. “Kristi Noem is a Trump loyalist who has backed him in election denial claims, and now she's going to be in charge of the agency that oversees [CISA],” says the cyber official. “I have a lot of questions about what happens there.”
The third CISA employee expects to see the “persecution of those who have done election security work” once Trump takes office.
Weakening Authorities
Trump’s victory could also have serious consequences for other CISA missions.
Under Biden, CISA gained broader authority and new funding to monitor other agencies’ networks for suspicious activity, turning it into the centralized defender of federal networks that many experts always hoped it would become. That could change under Trump, especially if senior officials close to Trump bristle at CISA’s oversight.
“I can absolutely see the new administration coming in and saying, ‘Hey, you guys are not letting agencies do what they need to do. You have … too much power [to look] at how the agencies do things. We're going to reduce your power,’” says the first CISA employee. “That will prevent us from doing the very necessary work that we need to do to protect the American people.”
One of CISA’s most formidable powers over other agencies could be watered down for an unexpected reason.
CISA can order the rest of the government to rapidly patch vulnerabilities and make other security improvements, and it has repeatedly used this authority in response to emerging digital crises. But while these directives only apply to federal agencies, some businesses treat them like unofficial government dictates and push their security teams to implement them.
If corporate leaders complain about these directives’ effects on their bottom lines, Trump’s team could force CISA to scale back its use of this authority.
The Trump administration could also try to cut costs at CISA by slashing the free services that it provides to state and local governments and critical infrastructure providers.
“My concern would be that some of those programs would just kind of fall to the wayside,” says the first CISA employee, who also fears that CISA’s “ability to express to the nation what we do and what services we offer” will “come under attack.”
Dimming the Stars
Trump’s influence on CISA could also undermine the agency’s long-running uphill battle to attract talented experts away from lucrative industry jobs and into public service.
Multiple CISA employees say they worry that Trump’s election will mean the end of what one called “star hires” like senior advisers Bob Lord and Jack Cable, the corporate cyber veteran and young security whiz, respectively, who lead CISA’s secure-by-design program.
“I can absolutely see guys like Bob Lord and Jack Cable—big, well-respected individuals in the security community—deciding that they want to take their stuff elsewhere if they don't believe that the administration is serious about helping companies be more secure,” says the first CISA employee. Lord and Cable declined WIRED’s request to comment.
“This country has gotten so much more politicized over the past eight years to where it gets in the way of us doing our jobs,” the first CISA employee adds.
Trump’s promised changes to civil-service rules, which would expose more government workers to politically motivated firings, are also alarming CISA employees. “I worry about getting weaponized,” says the third CISA employee.
Political Tensions
When it comes to CISA’s fate, much will depend on whom Trump picks to lead the agency and how they navigate broader DHS politics.
The main contenders for CISA director—Karen Evans, a former Energy Department cyber official and White House IT official; Matt Hayden, who served as DHS’s assistant secretary for cyber policy during Trump’s first term; and Brian Harrell, who led CISA’s infrastructure protection wing under Trump—have cyber experience and bipartisan credibility. But if Trump passes over them, it’s not clear who will end up leading CISA.
“There’s not really a ton of star, right-leaning info security people out there who want to risk their credibility as a political appointee,” says the third CISA employee.
Even if CISA gets competent, well-liked senior officials, they will still be at the mercy of DHS leadership. Kristi Noem has touted her work on cybersecurity as South Dakota’s governor, including in an op-ed after her nomination that referenced CISA. But Noem was the only governor to reject money from a DHS cyber grant program for state and local governments in 2023, suggesting that she won’t support the program, which expires in late 2025.
A fourth CISA employee says they hope that once Noem and other Trump appointees “are briefed on the full extent of our nation’s cybersecurity problems, they will recognize the value of our work and its critical importance to national security.”
But even if Noem mostly leaves CISA to its own devices, her department’s leading role in Trump’s controversial immigration agenda—including promised mass deportations of undocumented immigrants—will likely inflame longstanding tensions between DHS and CISA.
“People within CISA don't want to be considered part of DHS,” says the first CISA employee. “They believe that CISA should be its own realm.”
Amid a migration surge during Trump’s first term, DHS asked CISA employees to volunteer to help safeguard the US-Mexico border. “I do not believe that people [will] want to be considered part of DHS if that type of stuff is going to continue,” the first CISA employee says.
With DHS leaning harder than ever before into immigration crackdowns, CISA employees are longing for a separation—with even the conservative Project 2025’s unorthodox reorganization proposal sounding appealing to some.
“DHS is gonna be a real awful place the next four years,” says the third CISA employee. “Maybe we should move to Transportation.”
Quiet Concerns
While they wait for Trump to signal his approach to cybersecurity, CISA employees are quietly exchanging worries about what’s next for their workplace.
“There have been unspoken concerns about what's going to happen once the administration changes,” says the first CISA employee. “Anything that we do is going to affect the American public in one way or another, so we need to know … what's going to be coming down the pike.”
The mood inside the agency is “uncertain,” says the second CISA employee.
“CISA’s staff isn’t interested in getting politicized,” says the third CISA employee. “We just want to do good work for the American public that makes things more secure and resilient.”
CISA director Jen Easterly said in a statement that she “could not be prouder” of the agency’s achievements.
“CISA’s been able to accomplish its mission thanks to a talented and dedicated workforce, bipartisan support in Congress, and partnerships across government and industry,” Easterly said. “It’s important this work continues as the nation’s critical infrastructure faces an ever evolving and complex threat environment.”
For now, agency employees are distracting themselves by doubling down on that work.
“We kind of bury ourselves into the day to day, just trying to do as much as we can until we get the call that this position or this branch is going to be eliminated,” says the first CISA employee. “We don't have any control over things right now, and I think that's what makes things scary for a lot of us.”
