The True Story of Annie Oakley, Legendary Sharpshooter

As a star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, the 19th-Century Icon inspired TV shows, movies, and musicals. But her fame also has led to conflicting accounts of her life.

Legend has it that Annie Oakley was such a skilled sharpshooter that she singlehandedly foiled train robberies, shot bears and panthers, and killed a wolf that already had her in its grip—or so claimed one 1887 novel based on her life titled The Rifle Queen.

Oakley’s fame as one of the most skilled gunslingers of her lifetime inspired many tall tales. (The wolf story, for example, never happened.) Some of these myths live on today thanks to the 1946 Broadway musical “Annie Get Your Gun,” whose final scene depicts Oakley losing a match intentionally to protect her future husband’s ego—when in reality she won his heart by beating him in a shoot-out.

It’s difficult to separate fact from fiction about Oakley’s life. As the star attraction of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show—a popular 19th-century act known for its romanticized portrayal of frontier life—Oakley showcased her talents on stages across the world for 17 years. She astounded audiences by shooting cigarettes from her husband’s lips, riddling playing cards in mid-air, and—her go-to trick—shooting a target behind her back while spotting it from a mirror.

Oakley’s reputation was largely crafted by her husband Frank Butler and the promoters of the Wild West Show. But some of Oakley’s own accounts of her life, and those of her descendants, still remain. Here’s the true story of the sharpshooter’s life.

Early Life

For starters, Oakley wasn’t the gunslinger’s real name: Born on August 13, 1860, as Phoebe Ann Moses—which the family sometimes spelled Mozee, Mosey, or Mauzy—she started using the stage name around the time she joined the Wild West Show in 1885.

Instead of the Wild West, Oakley was originally from Darke County, Ohio, and she had a rough start. After her father passed away when she was five years old, Oakley had to help provide for her family. Sue Macy writes in National Geographic’s Bull’s-Eye: A Photobiography of Annie Oakley that Annie helped feed the family by making traps to catch game before taking up her father’s rifle.

Annie would tell the story of her first hunt many times, and even though details like what type of animal she killed changed over the years, she was certain she brought it down with a single shot.

“I don’t know how I acquired the skill,” she once said, according to Macy. “I suppose I was born with it.”

Tragedy struck again when Oakley’s stepfather died in 1870. Struggling to make ends meet, her mother sent some of her children to live with neighbors. A local farmer took Oakley into his home to help care for his children. Despite his promise that she’d have time for school and hunting, however, it quickly turned into indentured servitude.

She managed to escape and ultimately returned home to her mother as a teen. That’s when she started to regularly sell her kills to the local grocer and hotels, earning enough to pay off the mortgage on her mother’s house.

Her mastery of shooting became her career and even led her to meet her husband, fellow sharpshooter Frank E. Butler, in 1875. Oakley was visiting her sister in Cincinnati when she was invited to a shooting match with Butler.

Both Oakley and Butler hit every pigeon released from the trap, until Butler’s final shot fell beyond the boundary line, awarding Oakley the win. Soon after, the two were married and began performing together.

The Star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show

In 1885, Oakley and Butler joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, which would launch her to international fame. Oakley earned her spot in the company by hitting every clay pigeon Butler had launched in the air during a shooting practice.

Butler and Oakley traveled all over the U.S. with the Wild West Show company. The show, created in 1883 by Buffalo Bill, or William F. Cody, was an outdoor extravaganza of the fictionalized Wild West, including reenactments of cowboys battling Indians, shooting expositions, and skits showing off roping and horse riding. (Cody would later publicly renounce some of the show’s harmful depictions of Native Americans.)

Oakley quickly became the show’s main attraction since many audience members were stunned by the combination of her sharpshooting skills paired with her petite frame⁠. And she gained international renown in 1887 when the company performed at Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in London.

Oakley was billed as a headliner of the show, which the Queen and her son, Edward, the Prince of Wales, attended. Tales of Edward inviting the shooter to his box after the show have been corroborated by reports of the encounter, in which the prince described Oakley as a “wonderful little girl.”

Oakley and Butler soon branched out to give private exhibitions to European royalty before rejoining the Western show in 1889. Oakley even shot a cigarette out of German Prince Wilhelm’s hand—although not his mouth as some legends have it.

The couple finally left the Western show when Oakley was injured in a 1901 train accident. However, she continued to appear at exhibitions until she officially retired at 53.

An All-female Regiment of the U.S. Army

Beyond her iconic sharpshooting, Oakley was known for her volunteer and philanthropic work. Bessie Edwards, Oakley’s great grand-niece and cofounder of the Annie Oakley Foundation, writes in the foreword of National Geographic’s photobiography that Oakley donated time and money to tuberculosis patients, orphans, and young women seeking higher education.

Oakley was also passionate about teaching women how to shoot for sport and protection, and she’s thought to have taught more than 15,000 women to shoot over the years through free classes.

“I think every woman should learn the use of firearms,” she once wrote, according to Macy. “I would like to see every woman know how to handle [firearms] as naturally as they know how to handle babies.”

In 1898 she sent a letter to President William McKinley before the Spanish American War broke out and volunteered to organize a regiment of 50 American female sharpshooters—even though women were not allowed to serve in the U.S. military at the time. Her offer was denied by the War Department.

When the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, Oakley again wrote a letter to the Secretary of War, offering to train a women’s division: “I can guarantee a regiment of women for home protection,” she wrote, “every one of whom can and will shoot if necessary.”

The secretary did not take her up on her offer, but Oakley still helped in the war efforts by giving shooting demonstrations at U.S. Army posts. She even trained her dog, Dave, to sniff out cash donations for the Red Cross, which people wrapped in handkerchiefs and hid for the dog to find—earning him the nickname Dave the Red Cross Dog.

Protecting Her Reputation From Tall Tales

Oakley worked furiously to build her reputation—and protect it from the gossip and libel that often accompanied her fame.

In 1890, newspapers worldwide reprinted a French report that she had died in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Oakley telegrammed reassurances from England, where she was on vacation and very much alive, and demanded that newspapers retract the report. Evidently, Macy writes, the paper had misspelled the name of the actual deceased, a singer named Annie Oatley.

Then, in 1903, two Chicago newspapers reported that Oakley was locked up in a local jail after pleading guilty to stealing a man’s pants to get money for drugs. The story was picked up nationwide. To set the record straight, Oakley wrote to the newspapers saying she had not been in Chicago for months. Most printed retractions when an investigation revealed that an actress with the stage name Any Oakley was the true culprit—but that wasn’t enough for Oakley.

She filed libel lawsuits against 55 newspapers and spent much of the next seven years testifying in court. According to Macy, she won or settled 54 of the cases and came away with more than a quarter of a million dollars.

Legacy

Oakley was soon considering other career moves, like starring in movies or writing a memoir, but her health declined rapidly after a car accident in 1922 left her with a permanent leg injury. In 1926, she was diagnosed with a blood disorder and died at 66 years old in Greenville, Ohio. Her husband, who had been visiting North Carolina for the winter, died 18 days later.

In spite of—or perhaps due to—the conflicting accounts of her life, Oakley’s reputation has endured through the years. Her tenacity and determination have become an inspiration for many, with her likeness appearing in TV shows, movies, and musicals.

“Aim for the high mark and you will hit it,” she’s reported to have said. “No, not the first time, not the second time, and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting for only practice will make you perfect. Finally, you'll hit the bulls-eye of success.”

Some more brief thoughts on the musical "Annie"

I remember seeing the national tour of the 20th Anniversary production of Annie in 1998.

Of course I was just a little girl then. Up to that point, my main experience with Annie were the Original Broadway Cast album and the 1982 film with Aileen Quinn. The only stage production I had ever seen was a children's summer camp production. This was the first professional production I ever saw.

(Nor did I know then about the controversy surrounding that production, with the firing of Joanna Pacitti from the title role after she had won it in a Macy's Department Store contest, and the lawsuit her parents filed in response. But that's beside the current point.)

I liked the production as a whole, but I remembered that I didn't really care for Brittny Kissinger's Annie. Not because she wasn't convincing in the role or because her singing fell short in any way. But I thought she was unlikable. Compared to Aileen Quinn's much more innocent, feisty yet sweet performance in the 1982 film, this Annie was edgier and more belligerently tough, shorter-tempered with all the other orphans except little Molly, and more prone to being sassy and sometimes manipulative with adults. As a fellow child, I didn't think she was very nice compared to Quinn's Annie.

So imagine my surprise when, a year or two later, I found some reviews of that production on the infant Internet, written by adults who had been Annie fans since its original 1977 Broadway production and tours, and they praised Kissinger's performance to the skies! They called her the best Annie they had ever seen!

But in hindsight, as an adult, I get it. Especially after reading comments from the late Martin Charnin, who conceived the show, wrote the lyrics and directed both the original and the 20th Anniversary productions.

Charnin never liked Aileen Quinn's Annie – he had no involvement with the 1982 film and he considered her too "cuted up." Despite the saccharine reputation the show gained over the years, his original concept of Annie "avoided sentimentality like the plague" and he always maintained that Annie needed to be a gritty kid. Warm-hearted, optimistic and likable, yes, but still believable as a girl who's been raised in a dirty, run-down orphanage by a creepy alcoholic matron. Toughness and street smarts were the paramount qualities he looked for in the girls he cast in the role.

The older I've gotten, the more I've come to appreciate the stage version's characterization of Annie. I've even loosely based a character on her in one of the stories I've writing. (Although said character is a boy – his personality is still much the same, as is his hair color.) If I were to go back in time and see Kissinger's Annie again, viewing her with an adult's eye and knowing what the director was going for, I'd probably have a completely different perspective on her performance.

It's interesting how perspectives change with time and knowledge.

After the rave I drove Matt home in an awkward silence. Once the car pulled up to his house and slowed to a stop the brunette beside me reached for the door handle but paused. “About that really, incredibly bad idea I had-”

“You mean the kiss?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“That’s the one.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“For real?”

I nod, “Definitely.”

“So, I know Nate and you are over. Or at least I’m pretty sure that’s true. But is there anyone else?”

“Nate and I are definitely over. Like so over I don’t even want t breathe the same air as him.” I pause, sucking in a breath.

“And anyone else?” He asks once more.

“Not.. really.”

“I hate not reallys. You never know what to do with a not really.”

I awkwardly smile at him, “Sorry. Would you understand if I said it was complicated?”

“Not really. But I’ll try.” He sends me a gentle smile and places his hand over mine. Then opens the door and steps out. I lock the door and sigh, taking a breath before I start driving away.

When I reach over to change the gear shift to drive I notice Matt’s forgotten bag left on the floor of the passenger side. I reach over to pick it up and bring it to him but his camera falls out. Reaching for the camera to put it back, my thumb accidently hits a button lighting up the screen.

I see Matt’s pictures from the lacrosse game and start smiling, these are really good. I click to the next picture and then the next. When I make it to the fourth picture my back straightens in alarm. The picture is of Scott, his eyes glowing, the next picture shows the same thing.

Clicking onto the next picture already thinking I was prepared for what I was about to see then being shocked when it was something completely different. Rather than it being a picture of my twin with glowing eyes, it was a picture of me on the bleachers during the lacrosse game.

The next picture, another picture of me, this one in the hallway during school. The next, a picture of me during lunch. My heart begins racing as I continue to hit the next picture, seeing more and more pictures of myself. Pictures of me at school and in my room. 

Finally, knuckles pounding on the passenger window makes me jump and nearly drop the camera. I shakily look up and see Matt with a weird smile, that I can’t quite place. He mouths, “open the window” still smiling.

I hesitate for just a brief moment before doing what he said.

“Forgot my bag.”

“Yeah,” I breathe out. Reaching over and handing him his bag and camera.

“Some good pics in there, you think?”

I nod, trying to smile. “Yeah. You’re really talented. I saw the lacrosse ones.”

“There’s a good candid of you in there too.”

“Oh. Really?”

“You want to see some others? I mean this tiny screen doesn’t really do them justice. I could show you some on my computer.”

“That sounds great. But maybe another night.”

“Come up. Just for a few minutes.” He insists.

“I told my mom I would be home soon.”

“It’s the weekend. I’m sure she’ll understand.”

“I know, but-”

“And it’s spring break. You don’t have anything to do tomorrow, do you?”

“Yeah, actually I do. Things with Lydia. I should really get going.”

“You sure?”

I nod once more, “I’m sure.” I insist, thankful that he can’t hear how fast my heart is beating.

Finally, Matt backs away from the car, pulling his bag over his shoulder. I quickly roll up the window and leave.

The next day Lydia and I went shopping for her birthday party later tonight. After our trip to Macy’s she insisted we got to Allison’s and include her in our usual party ritual, which I of course happily agreed to.

Once Mr. Argent let us in we made our way up the stairs and without knocking, Lydia swung Allison’s bedroom door open. “Clear your schedule. This could take a while.”

She brushes past the hunter with me following after closing the door. Lydia dumps the handfuls of bags onto the girls bed as Allison begins to talk. “How many outfits do you plan on wearing tonight?”

“It’s my birthday party. I’m thinking, a host dress, evening wear, then after hours casual.”

I shake my head and smile as Lydia starts laying out the outfits. “I noticed you didn’t send out any invites.” Allison hesitantly says.

“She never does. It’s the biggest party of the year.” I reply.

“Everyone knows.” Lydia adds.

“I’m just wondering if maybe this year things might be... different.” Allison says.

Lydia turns to her bewildered, “Why would anything be different?” She then turns to me for an explanation.

I sigh, “Things have been a little off lately.”

“Like Jackson.” Allison pipes up.

“What do you care about Jackson?” Lydia asks.

Avoiding the question, Allison asks one of her own, “Do you know if he’s coming?”

“Everyone’s coming.” Lydia confidently replies. She then models a dress in front of the mirror, “This one’s Material Girl. I love it. On me. Not you. This is for you.”

She then pulls out another item from one of the bags.

Though Allison doesn’t pay much attention to it as she continues, “No one’s seen him since last night and i heard his parents are getting really worried. So if you know where he is-”

Lydia interrupts, “This is definitely your color. Although, honestly, Allison you have to start spray tanning. You’re starting to look goth and I don’t even know if it’s called goth anymore. It’s just pale and pasty and not good.”

Before Allison or I can say anything a knock sounds at the door. Mrs. Argent steps in looking towards her daughter. Lydia turns to ask, “Mrs. Argent, what do you think of this one?”

Mrs. Argent briefly looks at the dress, “It’s lovely. Allison, can I grab you for a moment to talk? Just the two of us.”

“Can we do it later?” She asks as she gestures to all of the clothes spread out on her bed.

“To be honest, sooner is better.” She replies as she reaches a hand to her shoulder.

“Party starts at 10.” Lydia informs.

“You’ll be around before then?” Mrs. Argent questions.

“I think so.” Allison casually replies.

“You think so?”

“I don’t know.”

Mrs. Argent gives a nod as Allison’s attention moves back to Lydia. She turns and leaves the room as we continue looking at the clothes for tonight.

After a couple of hours Lydia and I left to get ready for the party at her house. I was wearing an all black outfit that consisted of a black see through short-sleeved top, a black top underneath, a faux leather black skirt with a zipper up the front, and strappy black heels.

Once we were both ready, we made our way downstairs and waited for the guests to arrive. Once the first couple of guests arrive, music starts blaring as Lydia stays inside to greet her guests.

Though it’s officially past 10, there are only a few guests at the party. I walk towards Scott and Stiles when I see them by the pool. But before I have the chance to say anything Allison walks up to us too. “Jackson’s not here.”

“No one’s here.” Stiles deadpans.

“Maybe it’s just early?” Scott questions, sounding unsure.

I shake my head as Stiles answers, “Or maybe no one’s coming because Lydia’s turned into the town whack job.”

Allison turns to Scott, “Should you even be here?”

Scott nods, “I’ll be okay.”

We turn our attention to Lydia who hands a drink to the last of her party guests. She glances around to see who else needs one but there is no one else.

“We have to do something to help. I’m going to message some people from school.” I say.

Pulling out my phone I hesitate when Scott speaks, “She’s completely ignored Stiles for the last ten years.”

“I prefer to see it as me not having been on her radar, you know?” Stiles pipes up.

“We don’t owe her a party.” Scott continues.

I roll my eyes, “That’s my best friend you’re talking about. But fine, if you don’t want to do it, I have practically everyone in the school’s number anyway.”

I turn to walk away, annoyed with my twin, “(Y/N) wait!”

I ignore him and continue walking back inside the house as I send out a mass text: Come to Lydia’s birthday party - Great music and great food - Invite everyone!

A few minutes later more and more people start to trickly in. I sigh in relief and make my way back outside with a cup in my hands. “(Y/N)!” I look to my right and see Scott coming up to me. “I’m sorry about earlier. I ended up texting the lacrosse team.”

I nodded and smiled, “I know that Lydia isn’t or at least wasn’t the nicest person. But she means a lot to me and I want her to have a great birthday.”

He nods, “She will. How was your date with Matt? I never got the chance to ask.”

Not wanting to get Scott worked up I hesitate, “It wasn’t a date. But it was fine.”

Scott raises his eyebrows, “You’re lying.”

I open my mouth to respond but no words come out. I close my mouth trying to think of something to say but stop when Stiles comes up to us, “So you going to apologize to Allison?”

I don’t hear the rest of the conversation because I slip away, making a mental note to avoid Scott for a while and to thank Stiles for the interruption.

I stand leaning against the house and taking sips of the punch Lydia made. Looking across the yard at all the party guests, I make eye contact with Matt. I quickly break eye contact and turn to try and blend in with the crowd.

Unfortunately I was not fast enough in my attempt to escape. Matt gently grabbed my hand just before I made it inside, halting my movements. “What do you need?” I question as I pull my hand out of his.

“Could we talk? We left things kind of awkward and I want the chance to explain.”

I bite my lip and eye him. Sighing, I finally answer, “Fine, follow me.” I bring him upstairs to a guest bedroom before turning to give him my attention, “You get two minutes.”

He moves to close the door but stops when he sees me give him a look. “Right, okay. I know I took some pictures of you that I should’ve told you about. But try to look at it another way. Is it really that bad? That I think you’re beautiful? That I think you should be the subject of a perfect photograph?”

“It would be flattering if it wasn’t so creepy. I mean, some of those pictures -  I don’t even know how you took them.”

“With a telephoto lens. Come on. Photographers call them candids.”

“And police officers call it stalking.” I say matter-of-factly.

Matt raises his eyebrow, “So I’m a stalker now? Is that it? YOu think my bedroom is wall-papered with photos of you? You think I’m the kind of guy who’s going to say something like if I can’t have her, no one can? Well, get over yourself. There’s another pretty girl walking in the room every five minutes.”

I immediately cross my arms and narrow my eyes, “Great. Then all you need to do is wait another three. Good luck. And don’t talk to me again.”

“(Y/N), hold-on-” Matt tries to grab my arm as I pass him but I rip it out of his grip and glare at him, quickly making my way out of the room.

Rather then move downstairs to the party I moved down the hall to Lydia’s room.

I shut the door and move to sit on her bed holding my head in my hands. I sit in the quiet, blocking out the sounds of the people and the music from downstairs. After a few minutes the sounds fizzle away, but then I hear it.

I look up suddenly, my head spinning to the closed door. I hear a voice yelling. A voice that, though I haven’t heard it for years, is something I cannot erase from my mind.

I shakily stand up and slowly take step after step to the closed bedroom door. I listen as another voice starts yelling at the first. A man and a woman having an argument.

I blink back the tears threatening to spill as I listen intently at the door. Finally, I reach towards the handle and rip the door open. “I can’t believe you’re drinking again! Don’t you want to do better! We can’t be a family if you keep doing this!” The woman yells.

“Who cares about this family? The kids are worthless and I should have left you when I had the chance!” The man yells back, just as angry, possibly even angrier.

The man makes eye contact with me, a bottle of whiskey in his hand, “You hear that (Y/N)! You’re worthless. Worthless and pathetic. You should have never been born.” He spits out. He then raises the bottle to his lips, taking a swig of the alcohol inside and starts to stumble his way over to me.

The through gritted teeth the man speaks once more, “Maybe I should just end you’re worthless life now.” He raises a hand.

I flinch stumbling backwards and falling to the floor. Tears now freely flow down my face as I push myself against the wall and try to find the man, but he is nowhere in sight.

Not too long after that Stiles rushes up the stairs, “(Y/N)! Are you okay?”

“I... I don’t know.” I pause sucking in a breath and finally raising my hands to wipe my eyes, though the tears have already dried, “I think I was hallucinating.”

“Yeah, we all did. Have you seen Lydia?”

I shake my head as Stiles helps me up. We make our way back downstairs to find Scott, “I can’t find her. But I found (Y/N/N). And dude, everyone  -  anyone who drank that crap. They’re freaking out.”

“I can see that.” Scott replies.

People are jumping and pushing others into the pool. Shrieks can be heard from the party goers. “What the hell do we do?” Stiles asks.

“I don’t know but-” Scott is cut off by someone’s panicked voice.

“Stop! Don’t - Don’t-” We all turn to see Matt. He gets thrown into the pool and starts desperately thrashing around calling, “I can’t - I can’t swim!”

Jackson calmly reaches down, dragging Matt out of the pool as the music fades. Someone’s voice breaks the quiet, “Cops are here!” Suddenly everyone starts running as they try to leave the house.

As we get shoved to the side we step around the house trying to keep an eye out for Matt and Jackson. Scott gets separated from Stiles and I but when we finally meet back up Scott looks shocked, “Matt is the master.”

Ethnicity: Caucasian with family roots running in Irish, Welsh, Dutch,  French, English and German. 

Species: Human. 

Height: 5'7".

Weight: 155 pounds.

Hair color: Dark brown.  

Hair style: Thick, shaggy hair falls a little past her shoulders. She has layers with wispy bangs. Keeps hair pulled into a ponytail for work and loves to style it for special occasions.  

Eye color: Deep cornflower blue. 

Birthday: September 13th, 1983. 

Gender: Female. 

Sexual Orientation: Straight. She’s guy crazy, but she’s waiting for the right one. 

Powers (if any): No.  

Distinguishing features (if any): Has a turned up nose like Peter's. Has defined cupid bow lips like her mom, but Peter's smile. Has mom’s round shape of face. Laurie has two tattoos out of memory/respect for her parents. One on her left outer bicep that says “Proton Princess” in Peter’s handwriting. Second one is at the lower, inner right arm of a heart with her mom’s initials inside.

Clothing

Day to day outfit: When she’s off-duty, Laurie prefers straight leg jeans for most of her attire. She likes blouses and simple tees: those are usually graphic like rock bands, Ghostbusters merchandise or even raglan tees. She has some favorites that have sarcastic sayings and one that says “I got it from Dad.” She has cool calf boots, cute deck shoes and classic hightop converses.    

Pajamas/What they wear to bed: Favorite pajamas are comfy black leggings and a black nightshirt. (It has a cat on it and says "to-do list: sleep."

Formal Clothes: Chic dresses in 80s-90s style. She loves the velvet/metallic fabrics for these and wearing black stylish pumps.  

Work/School uniform: Work attire is a black jumpsuit with dark purple trim. She prefers those colors to help her blend in more with the shadows when she hunts. She does have doc martin’s for her boots, but she prefers wearing her converses since they’re more flexible for running. She has extra pockets inside her jumpsuit for trinkets like a nail file to pick locks etc.   

Other (glasses, jewelry, etc): Has a black square digital watch. Wears a silver brushed metal ring that was a gift to her from a ghost she helped as one of her first solo missions. (She wears it on her right middle finger which symbolizes responsibility and balance.) She has four ear piercings: three normal lobe piercings and then industrial ones in the upper ear cartilage. While she has plenty earrings to choose, her favorite earrings are three simple gold hoops and industrial earrings are silver barbells with “diamond” studs. Loves having painted fingernails; usually in different purple shades.   

Health

Physical Illnesses: Overcame pneumonia at the age of 3. Suffers from hay fever like Peter. Now gets strong cases of flu when sick, but otherwise she's fine.

Mental Illnesses or disorders: She’s been guessed to have a learning disorder, but still no official diagnosis. Some have guessed ADD and Dyscalculia.

Medications?: Just regular vitamins.

Addictions (Drugs, alcohol?): No addictions. She likes to drink, her favorite cocktail being a White Russian, but she's careful. She’s never tried drugs. 

General Health: Fine enough considering that she works out every day, but she's got a big appetite. Being an inverted triangle body type, she carries weight in upper half: Measurements are 40-30-38. Her legs are the most toned part of her body, strong arms, broad shoulders and a size 12, but looks for bigger size shirts since she’s top heavy. Happy with her shape.   

Life/Preferences:

Likes: Fashion, sleeping, eating, cars, and motorcycles. She loves listening to her favorite music while mouthing the lyrics and dancing.     

Dislikes: Criminals, yogurt (that isn’t soft serve or frozen) and people doubting her since she’s not a college graduate. The one thing she despises the most is inaccuracy about The Ghostbusters. (She really hates the sequel they made.) 

Career: Becomes a Ghostbuster and runs the business. 

Hobbies/Talents: Hobby of making a bucket list, motorcycle riding and electric guitar. (Guitar was her mom’s.)  Terrific hand-eye coordination so that she rarely misses a target with archery at camp, ghostbusting and when she played baseball in high school as pitcher. It did take a lot of practicing though.   

Habits (good or bad): Chews on toothpicks or sucker sticks (similar to when she'd chew her pacifier as a toddler.)

Family: Mom is Claire Teague who passed away when she was 16 months old. Though she’s been long gone, Laurie keeps her memory alive.  Dad is, the one and only, Dr. Peter Venkman: Laurie's role model. On maternal side, Arnold and Ruth Teague are her grandparents and Aunt Caroline. By now, her grandparents have passed and Caroline lives out of the USA. Paternal side has her grandfather, Jim Venkman, but he's dragged Laurie into cons and she's fed up with him. She met her great uncle Alf once, but didn't like him that well. She's curious of her deceased grandma Lydia Venkman.

Friends: First best friends are from elementary school: Lindsay McKellips and Leslie Cantu. They call themselves “The L Girls.” Lindsay goes onto serve in the Air Force and Leslie becomes a teacher overseas. Close guy friends are family members of the Ghostbusters. Derek Lovejoy who's the son of Ray's cousin Sam. He's 20 and is training to be a veterinarian. Craig Reynolds who's one of Winston's nephews. Craig is 32 and a civil engineer who keeps an eye on Laurie when necessary. Ross Melnitz who's Janine's youngest nephew. He's 23 and does secretarial work for Ghostbusters while being in the field when required. Laurie considers him her closest friend since he knows all her ups and downs best. (Ross's original last name was Irwin until his parents divorced and he legally changed to his mom's maiden name as she did.)

Romantic/Love Interest(s): Had some boyfriends, but she’s not in a hurry for marriage and not ready to lose her virginity. (She went through a relationship where she almost did, but left the guy when she realized he was toxic.) She enjoys being single while still being flirty. She had one boyfriend that cheated with a girl who turned out to be Ross’s girlfriend and Laurie was furious with both of them. She doesn’t know it, but she and Ross will fall in love one day. So one day, she’ll be Laurie Melnitz.  

Pets: Her cat Punxsutawney or usually called Punx for short. He was a present for Laurie when she was 10 and they have a tight bond. He’s revealed later to be a Class 4 shapeshifter, but isn’t disposed. For one, he imprinted on Laurie the one time she was at the animal shelter though she wasn't aware of it. Secondly, he’s not found to be a threat. Finally, he prefers to stay in his cat form which is an Abyssinian breed. He’ll only change if he finds Laurie in danger. During a presentation at a convention, he transformed into a terror dog.      

Social Status: The only social status that matters to Laurie is that she’s Peter Venkman’s daughter. She doesn’t feel like she’s in his or the other Ghostbusters shadow. She’s not bothered if people say “Oh you’re that one ghostbuster’s kid” etc. because she’s proud of her dad.   

Favorite Food: New York Reuben Sandwiches (add barbecue potato chips, some grapes, a pickle, two vanilla Hostess zingers along with cherry coke and there’s her ideal lunch.) She loves other foods as well which is a contrast to the picky eater she was as a child.  

Favorite Color: Tie between purple and black.  

Favorite genre of music: 80′s Rock/New Wave like Journey and Duran Duran. Her ipod nano is just a huge playlist of 80s classics.     

Favorite movie genre: Fantasies. She grew up loving the scary 80s kid movies. Her favorite movie is The Secret of Nihm. 

Favorite Animal: Now its cats, but still has soft spots for sea lions and rabbits. 

Degree of Education: High school graduate. Her grades weren’t high enough to get her into college. (She feels a bit ashamed about it though Peter’s proud of her for overcoming her difficulties with school.)  

What language(s) can they speak?: Besides English, she has rudimentary skill in French and Latin which she learned after becoming a ghostbuster. Usually calls on Egon for languages she can’t understand. 

Can they cook?: She can cook and she can eat!

Backstory Life 

Laurie was a true surprise since Claire, her mom, was told she'd never have children due to PCOS. However, the surprise was joyful and Claire loved her daughter more than anything. After Claire’s death, Laurie stayed with her grandparents, but eventually met Peter. As conflicted as he was with realizing he was a father, Laurie grew easily attached to him and he grew to love her as if he’d been there since her birth. After her grandma passed away. Laurie would be dropped off at the firehouse for days or weeks to the point she wanted to stay there. Peter and the Ghostbusters wanted her to, but she was under custody of her grandparents. Arnold despised Peter and refused to give up custody for Laurie’s wellbeing even though he didn’t care for her. (Winston predicted pride would be that man’s downfall if he wasn’t careful.)  There was even a point where Arnold only fed her yogurt which she grows to hate. At age 3, Laurie becomes critically ill with pneumonia due to her grandfather’s negligence (Its revealed he died from alcoholism and died in his house while Laurie was sick in her room.) Peter was in tears at the thought of losing her, especially since his own mother died from the same illness. When she’s cured, Laurie is finally allowed to live with Peter, which was what she hoped for. As she grows, she becomes more confident and less introverted by the time she’s a teen.    

Life Goals 

Laurie has one particular goal as an adult. That is to find the one who killed her mom. Since Claire died in the mid 80′s, DNA evidence was still in its infancy and the case was closed. However, Laurie isn’t a quitter until all options are futile. Its not just her mom’s case because Laurie has encountered ghosts of people who were killed, even children, and she can’t stand a criminal being free. Her first Ghostbusting mission was capturing and eventually helping a ghost who was murdered. So he’s the one who gave her the silver ring which she keeps as a promise to never forget those who died too soon.

Raphael Saadiq

Raphael Saadiq (born Charles Ray Wiggins; May 14, 1966) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. He rose to fame as a member of the multiplatinum group Tony! Toni! Toné! In addition to his solo and group career, he has also produced songs for such artists as Joss Stone, D'Angelo, TLC, En Vogue, Kelis, Mary J. Blige, Ledisi, Whitney Houston, Solange Knowles and John Legend.

He and D'Angelo were occasional members of The Ummah, a music production collective, composed of members Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, and J Dilla of the Detroit-based group Slum Village. He is a co-founder of independent video game developer IllFonic, which developed Friday the 13th: The Game.

Saadiq's critically acclaimed album The Way I See It, released on September 16, 2008, featuring artists Stevie Wonder, Joss Stone, and Jay-Z, received three Grammy Award nominations. His fourth studio album, Stone Rollin', was released on March 25, 2011. For the album, Saadiq worked with steel guitarist Robert Randolph; former Earth, Wind & Fire keyboardist Larry Dunn; Swedish-Japanese indie rock singer Yukimi Nagano (of Little Dragon fame); funk artist Larry Graham (on the bonus song "Perfect Storm") and Taura 'Aura Jackson' Stinson.

Music critic Robert Christgau has called Saadiq the "preeminent R&B artist of the '90s".

Early life

Saadiq was born in Oakland, California, the second-youngest of 14 siblings. His early life was marked by tragedy; he experienced the deaths of several of his siblings as a young child. When Saadiq was seven years old, one brother was murdered. One of his brothers overdosed on heroin and another committed suicide because he was unable to deal with his addiction to the drug. His sister died as a result of a car crash during a police chase in a residential neighborhood. Saadiq states that he does not want his music to be reflective of the tragedies he experienced, saying that "And through all of that I was makin' records, but it wasn't comin' out in the music. I did it to kinda show people you can have some real tough things happen in your life, but you don't have to wear it on your sleeve."

He has been playing the bass guitar since the age of six, and first began singing at age nine in a local gospel group. At the age of 12, he joined a group called "The Gospel Humminbirds". In 1984, shortly before his 18th birthday, Saadiq heard about tryouts in San Francisco for Sheila E.'s backing band on Prince's Parade Tour. At the audition, he chose the name "Raphael", and had difficulty remembering to respond to the name when he heard that he got the part to play bass in the band. He says of the experience, "Next thing I was in Tokyo, in a stadium, singin' Erotic City. We were in huge venues with the biggest sound systems in the world; all these roadies throwin' me basses, and a bunch of models hangin' round Prince to party. For almost two years. That was my university."

Career

1987–1999: Tony! Toni! Toné! and The Ummah

After returning to Oakland from touring with Prince, Saadiq began his professional career as the lead vocalist and bassist in the rhythm and blues and dance trio Tony! Toni! Toné! He used the name Raphael Wiggins while in Tony! Toni! Toné!, along with his brother Dwayne Wiggins, and his cousin Timothy Christian. In the mid-1990s, he adopted the last name Saadiq, which means "man of his word" in Arabic. His change of surname led many to speculate that he had converted to Islam at that point; in reality, Saadiq is not a Muslim, but rather just liked the way "Saadiq" sounded and changed his last name simply to distinguish himself from and avoid potential confusion with his brother, Dwayne Wiggins. As he confirmed by telling noted R&B writer Pete Lewis of the award-winning 'Blues & Soul' in May 2009, "I just wanted to have my own identity!"

In 1995, Saadiq had his biggest solo hit to date, when "Ask of You", featured on the Higher Learning Soundtrack peaked at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B chart. In 1995, Saadiq produced and performed on Otis & Shug's debut album, We Can Do Whatever.

Tony! Toni! Toné! would become major R&B superstars throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. However, after the 1996 album entitled House of Music failed to duplicate the group's previous success, Tony! Toni! Toné! went their separate ways in 1997.

1999–2004: Lucy Pearl and first string of solo albums

In 1999, Saadiq's next big project became the R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl. He recorded the self-titled album with Dawn Robinson (En Vogue) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest). The group only lasted for one album.

Also in 1999, he collaborated with rapper Q-Tip on the single "Get Involved", from the animated television series The PJs. It samples The Intruders' 1973 song "I'll Always Love My Mama" and charted at number 21 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks.

His 2000 song collaboration "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" won D'Angelo a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance; it was also nominated for Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. The song was ranked #4 on Rolling Stone's "End of Year Critics & Readers Poll" of the top singles of 2000. D'Angelo's album Voodoo won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards.

In 2002, Saadiq founded his own record label, Pookie Entertainment. Among the artists on the label are Joi and Truth Hurts. In 2002, he released his first solo album Instant Vintage, which earned him three Grammy Award nominations in addition to another two Grammy nominations for his writing work on “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)” the following year. He released a two-disc live album All the Hits at the House of Blues in 2003, and his second studio album Ray Ray in 2004, both on Pookie Entertainment.

2004–2010: Expanded output and second string of albums

In 2004, Saadiq produced a remix of the song "Crooked Nigga Too" by Tupac Shakur which is featured on the album Loyal to the Game. Other artists he has collaborated with include Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, The Isley Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Teedra Moses, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Macy Gray, Angie Stone, Snoop Dogg, Mac Dre, Devin the Dude, DJ Quik, Kelis, Q-Tip, Lil' Skeeter, Ludacris, The Bee Gees, Musiq Soulchild, Jaguar Wright, Chanté Moore, Lionel Richie, Marcus Miller, Noel Gourdin, Nappy Roots, Calvin Richardson, T-Boz from TLC, Jody Watley, Floetry, Leela James, Amp Fiddler, John Legend, Joss Stone, Young Bellz, Anthony Hamilton, Babyface, Ledisi, Goapele, Ghostface Killah, —Ginuwine, The Grouch Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Bilal, Chali 2na, Larry Graham, Luniz as well as many others. In 2007, Saadiq produced Introducing Joss Stone, the third album of British soul singer Joss Stone. According to J. Gabriel Boylan of The New York Observer, "he's produced artists including Macy Gray, the Roots, D'Angelo, John Legend, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, and more. With all of them he's pushed a classic aesthetic, heavy on organic sounds and light on studio magic, deeply indebted to the past and distrustful of easy formulas."

Saadiq's third solo album, The Way I See It, released on Columbia Records on September 16, 2008, available in a collector's edition box set of 7" 45 rpm singles as well as on traditional CD, was critically well-received, made several critics' 2008 best albums lists, and garnered three Grammy nominations including Best R&B Performance by a Duo Or Group With Vocals (for "Never Give You Up", featuring Stevie Wonder & CJ Hilton); Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance (for "Love That Girl") and Best R&B Album for The Way I See It. Music from The Way I See It was featured in the following motion pictures: Madea Goes To Jail, Bride Wars, Cadillac Records, Secret Life of Bees, In Fighting (Rogue), and It's Complicated.

Touring with a nine piece band, Saadiq hit the 2009 summer music festival circuit with performances at Bonnaroo, Hollywood Bowl, Outside Lands, Pori Jazz, Stockholm Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz, Essence Music Festival, Summer Spirit Festival, and Nice Jazz Festival, Bumbershoot Music Festival and Austin City Limits. Saadiq has been touring Europe extensively, and held a five-night residency at the House of Blues in Tokyo, Japan, in June 2009. In 2008, Saadiq formed a new label called Velma Records, a place where he promises "people can express themselves like I did with The Way I See It... where they can dream something up and just go with it".

He produced songs for LeToya Luckett's forthcoming second album Lady Love, released August 2009. In 2009, Saadiq produced "Please Stay" and "Love Never Changes" for Ledisi's August 2009 release "Turn Me Loose". Saadiq also was the executive producer for an emerging group called Tha Boogie. Tha Boogie's first EP was released on iTunes and is titled Love Tha Boogie, Vol. 1 (Steal This Sh*t).

In 2009, Saadiq announced his video game development company called IllFonic. The first video game in development by IllFonic is titled Ghetto Golf, with an expected release late in 2010. In 2009, Saadiq teamed up Bentley Kyle Evans, Jeff Franklin, Martin Lawrence, and Trenten Gumbs to create a new sitcom called Love That Girl! starring Tatyana Ali. Raphael is an executive producer and composer for Love That Girl!. The show airs on TV One and debuted on January 19, 2010. That same year, Saadiq performed The Spinners hit "It's A Shame" in a legendary Levi's commercial and sang as part of the chorus in the 2010 remake of "We Are the World" for Haiti.

2011–present: Stone Rollin'

In 2011, Saadiq was the guitarist/bandleader for the group backing Mick Jagger for Jagger's tribute performance of the Solomon Burke R&B classic, "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" at the 53rd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles and on CBS. The band that accompanied the performance was Saadiq's touring band called Stone Rollin. In 2011 he and his band performed as the ESPY's house band for the night, where he performed his latest compositions.

Saadiq's 2011 album Stone Rollin' was released to great critical acclaim. "He's always had a boyish enthusiasm for performing, and a flexible, naturally joyous voice that suggests a young Stevie Wonder," wrote Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune, "but with his latest album, Saadiq finds a new gear. The album and his current tour demonstrate that there's a big difference between retro and classic, and the artist consistently finds himself on the right side of that divide." Kot ranked the album number seven in his year-end list, in which he dubbed it Saadiq's "finest achievement" and stated, "He's always written songs steeped in soul and R&B, but now he gives them a progressive edge with roaming bass lines and haunted keyboard textures. He's no longer a retro stylist – he's writing new classics." Critic Jim Derogatis called it "a stone cold gas of a party disc."

In fall 2011, he performed on the fourth results show of Dancing with the Stars season 13. In December 2011, he performed a cover compilation of several Neil Diamond songs at the Kennedy Center Honors award ceremony.

In 2012 he signed a deal with Toyota to do a TV commercial for the Toyota Prius. In 2013 Raphael partnered with Bay Area/ Atlanta Production company EL Seven Entertainment/ Republic Records and new R&B Superstar Adrian Marcel and released his 1st promotional mixtape "Raphael Saadiq Presents Adrian Marcel 7 Days of Weak".

Saadiq is a featured bass guitar player on Elton John's 2013 album, The Diving Board.

In 2016 he executive produced Solange Knowles album, A Seat At The Table which debuted at #1 on music charts in the United States. He also guest starred in Luke Cage, where he performs his songs "Good Man" and "Angel" at Harlem's Paradise.

In 2017 he appeared in the award-winning documentary film The American Epic Sessions, directed by Bernard MacMahon, where he recorded the Memphis Jug Band’s 1928 song “Stealin’ Stealin’” live on the restored first electrical sound recording system from the 1920s. Of recording on the system he said, “it’s amazing to just look at how it’s built, you know just look at the machine itself. It just has this like magical sound the way that it’s built. It’s true. It’s just the truest sound you could ever get.”

In 2017, Saadiq collaborated with Mary J. Blige as a songwriter for the movie Mudbound (2017), for which they both received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song.

In 2018, he produced the John Legend holiday themed album, A Legendary Christmas.

During the 2020 coronavirus pandemic he released a song on his website called Rony! Roni! Roné!”
