Did you know July is Disability Pride Month? I know many of our crewmates are disabled and so I wanted to highlight this pride month in honor of them. Below is a wonderful video by ChronicallyJenni on instagram. I'm including the transcription of the video as well below. Found via the lovely @a-little-revolution here on tumblr.

"It's July & that means it's Disability Pride Month! But what actually is DPM?! I didn't know until a few years ago either so here's the run down!

Disability Pride Month was born out of the disability rights movement in July 1990 to commemorate the passing of the Americans with disabilities act (ADA). It has since become a global celebration, as well as an act of protest in order to campaign for the world to be more inclusive of disabled people. The first Disability Pride Parade in the UK was held in Brighton in 2016. Whilst we love our LGBTQIA+ friends & community members, #DisabilityPrideMonth has nothing to do with LGBTQIA+ Pride, they just happen to be next to each other.

The 3 main goals of Disability Pride Month are: ✨ To change the way people think about & define disability. ✨ To break down & end the internalised shame felt by people with disabilities. ✨ To promote the belief in society that disability is a natural, beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take pride.

All of these things are so incredibly important & change needs to be made in wider society in regards to ableism, accessibility & representation. Especially as being disabled is one of the only minority groups anyone can find themselves in overnight. Things are improving but I long for more disability representation in the media & in governance.

It's taken me a long time to discover my self worth as a person with a disability. And, don't get me wrong, being disabled is really tough But my disability has made me stronger, more resilient , more adaptable & has helped me find myself and the things that are important to me in a way I wouldn't have experienced otherwise. It's also helped me find the most incredible friends & community across the world.

I am disabled and I am proud." Happy Disability Pride Month Lovelies! I hope you have many many good days <3

Prince George of Wales, a Protestant royal and heir to the English throne (and later King George IV), found himself enchanted with Maria Anne Fitzherbert, a twice-widowed devout Catholic, six years his senior. George sent to his beloved a tiny treasure, called an "eye jewel". Its origins are rooted in miniature painting and they were a Georgian fashion rage.

They were once tokens of romantic love. They were also mourning pieces; the eye of the deceased represented within a tiny, ornate frame. In this case, the pearls around the frame represent tears and the clouds, the passage to heaven.

Lover's Eye:

Eye miniatures or Lovers' eyes were Georgian miniatures, normally watercolour on ivory, depicting the eye or eyes of a spouse, loved one or child.

These were usually commissioned for sentimental reasons and were often worn as bracelets, brooches, pendants or rings with richly decorated frames, serving the same emotional need as lockets hiding portraits or locks of hair.

Eye miniatures are believed to have originated when the Prince of Wales (later George IV) felt the need to send the widow Maria Fitzherbert a token of his love.

His gesture and the romance that went with it was frowned upon by the court, so a miniaturist was employed to paint only the eye and thereby preserve anonymity and decorum.

The couple went through a form of marriage on 15 December 1785, though all present knew the marriage was invalid by the Royal Marriages Act, since George III had not approved.

Reportedly Maria’s eye miniature was worn by George IV, hidden under his lapel. This is regarded as the event which led to lovers' eyes becoming fashionable,appearing between 1790 and the 1820s in the courts affluent families of England, Russia, France and America.

The downside is starting a conversation with me about Regency era romance novels and getting an impassioned dissertation on Maria Fitzherbert and why George was an utter bastard that devolves into "Eat the Rich" and "Fuck men are trash sometimes"

George was portrayed, and not just by Benbow, as a ram-like being with muttonchop whiskers, mutton being a play on words that meant both female genitalia and slut. One Benbow squib was entitled A Peep into W[indso]r Castle, after the Lost Mutton, and did not hold back on ribald rhymes depicting George frolicking with his various mistresses. A print entitled K[in]g Cupid in the Corner—Playing Bopeep was just as base, showing Lady Conyngham in her petticoats, breasts exposed and legs apart, with the fat mutton face of George peering out from under her underclothes and uttering: “Peep-bo—ah! Ha! Ha! Am I not a cunning fellow, the Queenites will never think of finding me in this Paradise.” Lady Conyngham replies: “Oh! What a happy retreat, to cherish and cover so charming a fugitive, the very essence and model of perfection.” The “Adonis of loveliness” was thus reborn.

Benbow’s imagery was reproduced everywhere, and in even cruder terms. A Mr. Wilson of the Royal Exchange, for instance, published a Peep at the Pavilion, Or Boiled Mutton with Caper Sauce, and began with a rhyme depicting the Prince of Wales in pursuit of “the lost mutton” in the form of Maria Fitzherbert. George, it proclaimed:

Sallied forth into Sussex, his anguish to lighten

Believing the MUTTON had stray’d down to B[righto]n.

Benbow is also responsible for such works as a depiction of the secret committee investigating and reviewing the claims against Caroline as “Doctors, Bishops, Judges, Generals and Statesmen at Hard work, or a Shitting Committee” with them emptying their bowels into a “stinking, bloated Green Bag” (the Green Bag being a compilation of all the testimonies and claims from the Milan Investigation demanded by George IV as to whether or not Caroline had both committed adultery as well as treason and to therefore justify his attempts to divorce her, and each House of Parliament was given a Green Bag with the same evidence against her)

Portrait Version Lover's Eyes

There is a lot of 18th Century Inspiration in History of Kingdom: Part V. Louis, specifically in the Portrait version of the album. The detail that I love the most are the pages that feature lover’s eyes.

Lover’s eyes were a late 18th century/early 19th century fashion accessory depicting the eye of a loved one. These were often sentimental pieces, with the eyes being that of a spouse, child, or other loved one. They were miniature portraits painted in watercolor on ivory and placed in jewelry, such as a brooch or a pendant or a ring.

The story behind these pieces is that supposedly George IV wished to send a token of his love to the widow Maria Fitzherbert, but the court was none too happy about the idea of him sending something so romantic to her. To get around this, he commissioned a miniatures artist to paint only the eye. Thus, birthed this trend. Supposedly. Whether it’s true or not, it doesn’t really matter as it started what would be a popular trend for many years.

Imagine my shock when I opened up my Portrait version album and saw these little images of eyes on the pages! I mentioned it on Twitter and no one seemed to know what I was talking about, so I was alone in my knowledge. Seeing these images was proof that a lot of research had been done to make sure the album had plenty of history accuracy while still maintaining the fantasy concept.

The detail of adding lover's eyes into the album even inspired me to attempt making one myself! I may have gone a bit hardcore, but it was fun! I really hope Kingdom continues adding such cool historical details into their albums, because it was so fun discovering this inside the album.

No, the marriage wouldn't be valid. All UK royal marriages have to be approved by Parliament under the Marriages Act (enacted for exactly this reason). The child won't be legitimate, won't have succession rights.
